Abstract

This collection presents the state of the art on English-medium instruction (EMI) / Integrating content and language (ICL) in Italian higher education, drawing attention to different critical aspects of the teaching/learning experience and highlighting the perspectives of various educational stakeholders regarding the effectiveness of tertiary study in a foreign language. The chapters draw on a range of methodologies, from multimodal participant observation, to action research, to video-stimulated recall (VSR), to questionnaires and interviews, in examining language policies and practices across various educational settings. Overall, the volume suggests that internationalisation succeeds best when the form of lessons (language) and the content of lessons (disciplinary concepts) are constructively aligned in curriculum planning and delivery. This integration process requires the strategic support of educators to guarantee the quality of learning in multilingual education.

3. Multilingual Teacher Training in South Tyrol: Strategies for Effective Linguistic Input with Young Learners

Abstract

Purpose: Attempts to cultivate a multilingual mindset in education in South Tyrol find an obstacle in educational norms, structures and policies that divide students into linguistically distinct schools based on their self-identified main language. Education in the region is administered through three separate educational authorities -- German-speaking, Italian-speaking, Ladin-speaking -- and teachers are prepared for service in one of these based on their own declared linguistic identification. Plural identities and translingual interaction do not flourish in this context where language separation is the norm. This paper begins with an overview of the educational policy of language separation in South Tyrol and its impact on the language achievement of its students. It then addresses how the Free University of Bolzano has responded to the need for improved language competences through teacher training for multilingual schools in the Province of Bolzano. Design: The paper presents the preliminary results of a small-scale study with in-service preschool teachers through an action research cycle in which classroom observations and a language input observation scheme are used to quantitively measure the quality of teachers' language input in second-language instruction in German and English, and provide formative feedback for improvement in teaching practice. Findings and Value: The expected outcomes of the study are threefold: (1) improving input and corrective feedback strategies of language teachers; (2) raising language awareness among teachers participating in peer observation; (3) empowering the emergence of language rich episodes through effective planning of interactive lessons in second/foreign language teaching. The study contributes to an understanding of what makes teachers' corrective feedback strategies in preschool settings effective in rendering input comprehensible for young learners, thus assisting language appropriation processes.

Abstract

Geraten die Sprachsysteme Deutsch und Italienisch in Kontakt, wie dies in den Sprechversuchen italienischer Deutschlernender erfolgt, so treten häufig charakteris- tische phonetische und prosodische Fehlleistungen und Interferenzen auf, darunter für deutsche Ohren zumeist „merkwürdige“ Wort- und Satzakzente, die nicht sel- ten als Kontrastakzente bzw. als emphatische Akzente wahrgenommen werden. Bei „Sprachbegegnungen“, etwa in spontanen Gesprächen, können im Deutschen italie- nischer SprecherInnen orthophonisch falsche, nämlich normabweichende Wort- und Satzakzente zu kommunikativen Missverständnissen bis hin zu pragmatischen Fehl- leistungen führen, zumal unerwartete bzw. nicht erwartbare Prominenzen auf der Wort- und der Satzebene als Emphatisierungen, Kontrastierungen und Erwiderungen („Sprachentgegnungen“) interpretiert werden können. Vor dem Hintergrund der sprachdidaktischen Erfahrung mit erwachsenen Deutsch- lernenden italienischer Muttersprache werden im Beitrag zunächst die phonetisch- prosodischen Eigenheiten des Akzents im Deutschen, dessen Regelmäßigkeiten auf der Wort- und der Satzebene sowie dessen Funktionen dargestellt, um anschließend rekurrente Fehlleistungen italienischer Lernender bei der Akzentrealisierung im Deutschen zu beschreiben und zu erklären.

Abstract

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular condition characterized by muscle weakness. The Performance of upper limb (PUL) test is designed to evaluate upper limb function in DMD patients across three domains. The aim of this study is to identify frequently lost or gained PUL 2.0 abilities at distinct functional stages in DMD patients. This retrospective study analyzed prospectively collected data on 24-month PUL 2.0 changes related to ambulatory function. Ambulant patients were categorized based on initial 6MWT distance, non-ambulant patients by time since ambulation loss. Each PUL 2.0 item was classified as shift up, no change, or shift down. The study's cohort incuded 274 patients, with 626 paired evaluations at the 24-month mark. Among these, 55.1 % had activity loss, while 29.1 % had gains. Ambulant patients showed the lowest loss rates, mainly in the shoulder domain. The highest loss rate was in the shoulder domain in the transitioning subgroup and in elbow and distal domains in the non-ambulant patients. Younger ambulant patients demonstrated multiple gains, whereas in the other functional subgroups there were fewer gains, mostly tied to singular activities. Our findings highlight divergent upper limb domain progression, partly linked to functional status and baseline function.

Abstract

Background: Risdiplam is an oral small molecule approved for the treatment of patients with spinal muscular atrophy, with approval for use in patients with type 2 and type 3 spinal muscular atrophy granted on the basis of unpublished data. The drug modifies pre-mRNA splicing of the SMN2 gene to increase production of functional SMN. We aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of risdiplam in patients with type 2 or non-ambulant type 3 spinal muscular atrophy. Methods: In this phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, patients aged 2–25 years with confirmed 5q autosomal recessive type 2 or type 3 spinal muscular atrophy were recruited from 42 hospitals in 14 countries across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Participants were eligible if they were non-ambulant, could sit independently, and had a score of at least 2 in entry item A of the Revised Upper Limb Module. Patients were stratified by age and randomly assigned (2:1) to receive either daily oral risdiplam, at a dose of 5·00 mg (for individuals weighing ≥20 kg) or 0·25 mg/kg (for individuals weighing <20 kg), or daily oral placebo (matched to risdiplam in colour and taste). Randomisation was conducted by permutated block randomisation with a computerised system run by an external party. Patients, investigators, and all individuals in direct contact with patients were masked to treatment assignment. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline in the 32-item Motor Function Measure total score at month 12. All individuals who were randomly assigned to risdiplam or placebo, and who did not meet the prespecified missing item criteria for exclusion, were included in the primary efficacy analysis. Individuals who received at least one dose of risdiplam or placebo were included in the safety analysis. SUNFISH is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02908685. Abstract

In the current climate of concern about the immigrant crisis, and the need for ways of bringing the African peoples to develop their talents and their countries, the graduate business school ALTIS in Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore has been implementing innovative forms of transnational education on social entrepreneurship in Africa since 2010. Although transnational education is a strategy of internationalisation, defined as “an ongoing process of change whose objective is to integrate the institution and its key stakeholders (its students and faculty) into the emerging global knowledge economy” (Hawawini, 2016: 5), transnational education is sometimes seen as a means of enabling Western universities to raise the revenue that is lacking at home. What started as an MBA in Social Entrepreneurship, developed by ALTIS and its spinoff foundation E4Impact, has blossomed into a portfolio of academic opportunities, which adapt to different countries, languages and cultures, while maintaining the core quality content. The MBA, or a lighter form leading to a Certificate, is currently delivered in English or French in nine countries: Kenya, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, and in 2020 will start in three more countries, Cameroon, Nigeria and, in Portuguese, in Mozambique. Conceived as a partnership between an African university, whose faculty work together with the Italian professors for national accreditation and marketing, the model has had to adapt to diverse contexts, different universities requiring different models, such as a two-year degree or an intensive six-month certificate. The Italian university is thus not exporting a monolithic model, but is offering a collaborative educational proposal, which trains the future generation of international entrepreneurs together. Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of assessment in English-medium instruction (EMI) and international teaching contexts in Italy. Its aims are twofold: to present the results of a survey of lecturers who teach in English-taught programmes (ETPs) in a northern Italian university regarding their experience of assessment in other cultures, their current assessment practices in ETPs and their attitudes towards assessment; and to report on a module developed as part of an EMI professional development programme that focuses specifically on assessment, feedback and learning outcomes. The lecturers completed the survey before taking part in the training module so educational developers would gain insight into their conceptions of assessment prior to the course. The training module was developed to support lecturers in developing assessment styles and practices that are appropriate for the international learning environment and ETPs.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to establish 24 month changes in upper limb function using a revised version of the performance of upper limb test (PUL 2.0) in a large cohort of ambulant and non-ambulant boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and to identify possible trajectories of progression. Of the 187 patients studied, 87 were ambulant (age range: 7-15.8 years), and 90 non-ambulant (age range: 9.08-24.78). The total scores changed significantly over time (p<0.001). Non-ambulant patients had lower total scores at baseline (mean 19.7) when compared to the ambulant ones (mean 38.4). They also had also a bigger decrease in total scores over 24 months compared to the ambulant boys (4.36 vs 2.07 points). Multivariate model analysis showed that the Performance of Upper Limb changes reflected the entry level and ambulation status, that were independently associated to the slope of Performance of Upper Limb changes. This information will be of help both in clinical practice and at the time of designing clinical trials.

16. La lingua dell'insegnante: Un modello per l'insegnamento e per l'apprendimento. Fondamenti metodologici dell'insegnamento CLIL.

Abstract

L’insegnamento disciplinare in una lingua straniera (Content and Language Integrated Learning - CLIL) richiede al docente DNL (discipline non linguistiche) una particolare attenzione alla lingua comune, alla lingua della disciplina, ma soprattutto alle frasi fatte, ai frasemi, alle parole sintagmatiche e alle espressioni multiparola (Masini 2009). La categoria degli atti linguistici attenti alla lingua (Leisen 2010) può essere definita in relazione alla lingua franca, caratterizzata da un minor uso di parole sintagmatiche, di espressioni multiparola, di frasi idiomatiche (Aguado 2002b) come anche da una minore attenzione alle relative forme prosodiche. Se da un lato sembra in questo modo definito uno degli obiettivi principali della formazione linguistica degli insegnanti DNL (discipline non linguistiche), dall’altro devono essere analizzate e verificate le vie che permettano il raggiungimento di tale obiettivo. Il lavoro di ricerca svolto traccia un modello di insegnamento e di apprendimento basato proprio sulle espressioni multiparola e sulla loro espressione prosodica. Tre i filoni scientifici alla base del modello: il "competition model" (Bates 1999), la "idiomatisch geprägte Sprache" e la "Anschließbarkeit" (Feilke 1994, 1996) e la lettura silente (Perrone-Bertolotti et al. 2013). Da essi nasce l’indicazione della "prosodische Prägung" di grande importanza per il modello di insegnamento e apprendimento proposto che trova nelle fonti letterarie tedesche testi eccellenti per una didattica interdisciplinare, che sappia valorizzare il ruolo del docente di lingua straniera nel suo apporto all’apprendimento della lingua tedesca nella classe CLIL., Teaching a CLIL-class (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is a big challenge for teachers of non-linguistic disciplines (NLD), as they need to pay particular attention not only to the specialized language but also to the everyday language, in particular to chunks and formulaic sequences. The discourse structure necessary for a ‘good’ Clil lesson contrasts with the lingua franca, which is characterized by a reduced use of chunks and formulaic sequences (Aguado 2002, Wray 2002) and by a reduced attention for prosodic features. Teacher training on Content Language Integrated Learning needs therefore to raise and to foster language awareness of discipline teachers. The research presented in this work proposes a model for teaching and learning in CLIL-classes, which is based on chunks, formulaic sequences and their prosodic features. The scientific foundations of this model are the competition model (Bates 1999), the "idiomatisch geprägte Sprache" as well as the "Anschließbarkeit" (Feilke 1994, 1996) and the silent reading (Perrone-Bertolotti et al. 2013). The central point of the model for teaching and learning is the "prosodische Prägung", which can be successfully exercised and learned with poems from the great German literature giving new value to the role of the foreign language teacher in supporting the discipline teachers in CLIL-classes.

Abstract

Today, the teaching of knowledge is facing a twofold challenge: the demand for comprehensibility despite the high complexity of contents and the achievement of acceptable results in school in situations of ever-growing diversity. This opens up new research areas for linguistics: on the one hand, the communicative acts of members of a language community in everyday life and in specialized settings; on the other hand, the variable contexts of the speech acts, which require the co-orientation of social actors, which in turn also needs to be acquired and practiced like the languages with their formal and structural characteristics. Based upon these premises, this volume presents findings and theoretical approaches which make corpus findings available for the study and the didactics of language teaching concerning the the three school languages ??of German, Italian and English. Special emphasis is put on the varieties of the German language in South Tyrol and the interface problem., Die Vermittlung von Wissen steht heute vor einer zweifachen Herausforderung: dem Anspruch auf Verständlichkeit trotz hoher Komplexität der Inhalte und dem Erreichen akzeptabler Ergebnisse in der Schule in Situationen von immer größerer Diversität. Abstract

Objective: The effect on body composition and in particular on fat mass (FM) of 12 months' use of a desogestrel (DSG)-only contraceptive pill or the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) was evaluated in women in the perimenopause.Methods: An observational study comprised 102 perimenopausal women: 42 received a 75 μg DSG pill, 34 received the 52 mg LNG-IUS, and 26 received no treatment. Body composition, body weight and resting metabolic rate (RMR) were evaluated at baseline and again after 12 months.Results: FM did not change in the control group (- 0.5 ± 1.6%) but significantly increased in the LNG-IUS group (+ 1.1 ± 2.9%; p = 0.02 vs. controls) and in the DSG group (+ 2.8 ± 3.5%; p = 0.0001 vs. controls; p = 0.02 vs. LNG-IUS). Women treated with DSG or the LNG-IUS showed a non-significant increase in body weight, body mass index and waist circumference. RMR did not significantly vary in the control group (- 3.8 ± 292.9 kJ/ 24 h) and tended to decrease but not significantly in the LNG-IUS (115.5 ± 531.8 kJ/ 24 h) and DSG groups (305.9 ± 556.9 kJ/24 h).Conclusions: The results of this preliminary study seem to indicate that in perimenopausal women continuous use of the DSG-only pill and to a lesser extent the LNG-IUS may favour FM accumulation. Bozen : Bozen-Bolzano University Press 2021, VI, 287 S., This collection presents the state of the art on English-medium instruction (EMI) / Integrating content and language (ICL) in Italian higher education, drawing attention to different critical aspects of the teaching/learning experience and highlighting the perspectives of various educational stakeholders regarding the effectiveness of tertiary study in a foreign language. The chapters draw on a range of methodologies, from multimodal participant observation, to action research, to video-stimulated recall (VSR), to questionnaires and interviews, in examining language policies and practices across various educational settings. Overall, the volume suggests that internationalisation succeeds best when the form of lessons (language) and the content of lessons (disciplinary concepts) are constructively aligned in curriculum planning and delivery. Abstract

Die Methode des Stationenlernens ist eine Form des lernerorientierten offenen Unterrichts, für die Abwechslungsreichtum, Selbstkontrolle des Lernens und Eigenverantwortlichkeit beim Lernen kennzeichnend sind. Bei selbständiger und selbsgesteuerter Arbeit an Stationen und durch Arbeitsaufträge unterschiedlicher Art entwickeln Lernende ihre Schlüsselkompetenzen, ihre sprachliche Handlungskompetenz und erwerben Sozialkompetenz. Da die Einübung der selben Kompetenzen im Mittelpunkt des studienbegleitenden Deutschunterrichts steht, eignet sich das Stationenlernen besonders gut in solchem Unterricht. Dieser Beitrag soll zeigen, wie durch die Methode des Lernens an Stationen die Hauptziele des fachorientierten studienbegleitenden Deutschunterrichts - Entwicklung der kommunikativen und sozialen Handlungsfähigkeit in allgemeinsprachlichen und bestimmten berufsübergreifenden Situationen, Erwerb von Sprachstrukturkenntnissen, Sensibilisierung für Eigenverantwortung und Förderung des autonomen Lernens (Rahmencurriculum für Deutsch als Fremdsprache im studienbegleitenden Fremdsprachenunterricht an den Universitäten und Hochschulen in Kroatien) - erfolgreich verfolgt werden können. An einigen Beispielen aus dem studienbegleitenden Deutschunterricht für künftige Sozialarbeiter in Kroatien wird es gezeigt, wie durch die Arbeit an Stationen die folgenden Kompetenzen gefördert werden: Informationen den Texten entnehmen, Internetrecherchen, Arbeit mit Lexika und Nachschlagewerken, Statistiken verstehen und präsentieren usw.

Abstract

Objectives: Oral contraceptives (OCs) containing androgenic second and third generation progestins decrease insulin sensitivity (SI). In this study we investigated whether an oral contraceptive containing the anti-androgenic progestin drospirenone (DRSP) still alters SI. Lipid modifications were investigated as well., Study Design: Eleven young healthy women were allocated to receive for 6 months ethinyl-estradiol (EE) 30μg plus DRSP (3mg). SI and glucose utilization independent of insulin (Sg) was investigated by the minimal model method. Lipid modifications were also analyzed., Results: SI did not vary during EE/DRSP (from 3.72±2.62 to 3.29±2.93; p=0.73). Similarly, values of Sg did not vary (from 0.03±0.02 to 0.032±0.014; p=0.87). An increase was observed in HDL cholesterol (9.4±9.8mg/dl; p=0.05) and triglycerides (46.9±75.1mg/dl; p=0.046), with no modification in LDL cholesterol (-4.64±1.704mg/dl; p=0.6)., Conclusions: EE/DRSP does not deteriorate SI. 42. Increased cortisol level: a possible link between climacteric symptoms and cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract

Objective: Vasomotor symptoms may increase the risk for cardiovascular diseases through still elusive mechanisms. Increased cortisol release may favor atherosclerosis. In this study, we tested whether vasomotor and psychological symptoms are associated with an increase in cortisol levels., Methods: A cross-sectional investigation on women in early menopause enrolled consecutively between January and June 2009 was conducted. This study was set at a menopause outpatient service at University Hospital. Participants included 85 healthy women who were 6 months to 5 years postmenopause. The 24-hour urinary cortisol level and Greene Climacteric Scale scores were evaluated. Anthropometric parameters and fasting blood samples for the determination of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and insulin levels were measured. Body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance were calculated. The relation between Greene Climacteric Scale scores and 24-hour urinary cortisol level and between 24-hour urinary cortisol level and lipid levels or insulin resistance was determined., Results: The Greene Climacteric Scale score for climacteric symptoms (coefficient of regression [CR], 1.343; 95% CI, 0.441-2.246) and body mass index (CR, 4.469; 95% CI, 1.259-7.678) explained 32.5% and 10.3%, respectively, of the variance in 24-hour urinary cortisol level (r = 0.428; P = 0.0003). Twenty-four-hour urinary cortisol level was inversely related to HDL-cholesterol level (CR, -0.065; 95% CI, -0.114 to -0.017; r = 0.283; P = 0.009) and was related to waist girth (CR, 0.685; 95% CI, 0.306-1.063) and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (CR, 0.097; 95% CI, 0.032-0.162; r = 0.510; P = 0.0001)., Conclusions: In early postmenopausal women, the Greene Climacteric Scale score is associated with increased 24-hour urinary cortisol level. Increased cortisol level is associated with known risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as insulin resistance and decreased HDL-cholesterol level.
