10. Breeders management and reproductive traits in three heritage rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) breeds: a preliminary study.

Abstract

The aim of the present research is to investigate breeders' management strategies and their effects on reproductive performances in heritage breeds. A total of 468 litters were analysed: Belgian Hare (N = 151), Burgundy Fawn (N = 105), Californian (N = 212). Litter size (born alive), percentage of weaned kits and percentage of selected kits were analysed using a model that included the effects of breed, year of birth, litter's origin (with three levels: both internal parents = 0, one outside parent = 1 both outside parents = 2) and their interactions (breed*year of birth, breed*litter's origin, year of birth*litter's origin, breed*year of birth*litter's origin). Besides, number of litters per buck and number of litters per doe were analysed using a model with only effect of breed. All these analyses were carried out with SPSS software. No effects of breeds on litter size, percentage of weaned and percentage of selected kits were found. Year of birth presented significant effects on litter size and percentage of weaned kits (p ≤ 0.05). The inclusion of external breeders didn't significantly influence analysed reproductive data. The number of litters per buck and per doe were not influenced by breed. The frequency of external breeders' inclusion is breed specific. Data recording is a basic step in phenotypical characterization, our results supply some information about breeders' management strategies and their effects on some reproductive parameters. Our results show breed specific frequencies of inclusions of external breeders and a positive effect of management procedures (genetic plus environment) on percentage of weaned kits according to the year of birth. Abstract

Heritage breeds can be considered a genetic reservoir of genetic variability to be conserved and valorized considering their historical, cultural, and adaptive characteristics and possibly for their high potential in commercial hybrid genetic improvement by gene introgression. The aim of the present research is to investigate via Copy Number Variant (CNVs) the genomic makeup of 4 Italian autochthonous turkey breeds (Bronzato Comune—BrCI, 24, Ermellinato di Rovigo—ErRo, 24, Parma e Piacenza—PrPc, 25, Romagnolo—RoMa, 29). CNVs detection was performed using two different software and an interbreed CNVs comparison was carried out. A total of 1077 CNVs were identified in 102 turkeys, summarized into 519 CNV regions (CNVRs), which resulted after merging in 101 and 18 breed and shared regions. Biodiversity was analyzed using the effective information supplied by CNVs analysis, and BrCI and ErRo were characterized by a low mapped CNV number. Differences were described at a genomic level related to physiological, reproductive, and behavioral traits. The comparison with other three Italian turkey breeds (Brianzolo, Colle Euganei, and Nero Italiano) using a CNV data set available in the literature showed high clustering properties at the genomic level, and their relationships are strictly linked to the geographical origin and to the history of the rural structure of their native regions.

Abstract

In Italy, 90 local avian breeds were described; the majority (61%) were classified as extinct and only 8.9% as still widely spread. Therefore, efforts for conservation of Italian avian breeds are urgently required. The aim of this study was to record the breeding performance of the Italian breed Mericanel della Brianza to multiply a small population, in order to develop a conservation programme. Fourteen females and eight males were available at the beginning of the reproductive season in 2009 and organised into eight families (1 male/1-2 females) kept in floor pens. Birds received a photoperiod of 14L:10D and were fed ad libitum. Breeding performance was recorded from March to June. Egg production and egg weight were recorded daily; eggs were set every two weeks and fertility, embryo mortality and hatchability were recorded. Mean egg production was 37% and mean egg weight was 34±3.49 g. High fertility values from 94% to 87% were recorded in the first three settings and the overall mean fertility value was 81.6%. Overall hatchability was only 49.6% owing to a high proportion of dead embryos. Embryo mortality occurred mainly between days 2 and 7 of incubation and during hatching. The highest hatchability values were recorded in settings 1 and 2, 69% and 60% respectively, and a large decrease was found in the subsequent settings. Marked variations in egg production, fertility, hatchability and embryo mortality were found among families. The present results represent the basic know - ledge of reproductive parameters necessary to improve the reproductive efficiency of the breed within a conservation plan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
