Search

Clean one-dimensional electron systems can exhibit quantized conductance. The plateau conductance doubles if the transport is dominated by Andreev reflection. Here, we report quantized conductance observed in both Andreev and normal-state transports in PbTe-Pb and PbTe-In hybrid nanowires. The Andreev plateau is observed at $4e^2/h$, twice of the normal plateau value of $2e^2/h$. In comparison, Andreev conductance in the best-optimized III-V nanowires is non-quantized due to mode-mixing induced dips (a disorder effect), despite the quantization of normal-state transport. The negligible mode mixing in PbTe hybrids indicates an unprecedented low-disorder transport regime for nanowire devices, beneficial for Majorana researches.

Network structures by semiconductor nanowires hold great promise for advanced quantum devices, especially for applications in topological quantum computing. In this study, we created networks of PbTe nanowires arranged in loop configurations. Using shadow-wall epitaxy, we defined superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) using the superconductor Pb. These SQUIDs exhibit oscillations in supercurrent upon the scanning of a magnetic field. Most of the oscillations can be fitted assuming a sinusoidal current-phase relation for each Josephson junction. Under certain conditions, the oscillations are found to be skewed, suggesting possible deviation from a sinusoidal behavior. Our results highlight the potential of PbTe nanowires for building complex quantum devices in the form of networks.

Degeneracy and symmetry have a profound relation in quantum systems. Here, we report gate-tunable subband degeneracy in PbTe nanowires with a nearly symmetric cross-sectional shape. The degeneracy is revealed in electron transport by the absence of a quantized plateau. Utilizing a dual gate design, we can apply an electric field to lift the degeneracy, reflected as emergence of the plateau. This degeneracy and its tunable lifting were challenging to observe in previous nanowire experiments, possibly due to disorder. Numerical simulations can qualitatively capture our observation, shedding light on device parameters for future applications.

Superconductivity in semiconductor nanostructures contains fascinating physics due to the interplay between Andreev reflection, spin, and orbital interactions. New material hybrids can access new quantum regimes and phenomena. Here, we report the realization of epitaxial indium thin films on PbTe nanowires.The film is continuous and forms an atomically sharp interface with PbTe.Tunneling devices reveal a hard superconducting gap.The gap size, 1.08 to 1.18 meV, is twice as large as bulk indium (around 0.5 meV), due to the presence of PbTe. A similar enhancement is also observed in the critical temperature of In on a PbTe substrate. Zero bias conductance peaks appear at finite magnetic fields. The effective g-factor (15 to 45) is notably enhanced compared to bare PbTe wires (less than 10) due to the presence of In, differing from Al-hybrids. Josephson devices exhibit gate-tunable supercurrents. The PbTe-In hybrid enhances the properties of both, the superconductivity of In and g-factors of PbTe, and thus may enable exotic phases of matter such as topological superconductivity.

Material challenges are the key issue in Majorana nanowires where surface disorder constrains device performance. Here, we tackle this challenge by embedding PbTe nanowires within a latticematched crystal, an oxide-free environment. The wire edges are shaped by self-organized growth instead of lithography, resulting in nearly-atomic-flat facets along both cross-sectional and longitudinal directions. Quantized conductance plateaus are observed at zero magnetic field with channel lengths reaching 1.54 $\mu$m, significantly surpassing the state-of-the-art of III-V nanowires (nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement compared to InSb). Coupling PbTe to a Pb film unveils a flat interface spanning microns and a large superconducting gap of 1 meV. Our results meet the stringent low-disorder requirement for the definitive observation of Majoranas.

Planar Josephson junctions are predicted to host Majorana zero modes. The material platforms in previous studies are two dimensional electron gases (InAs, InSb, InAsSb and HgTe) coupled to a superconductor such as Al or Nb. Here, we introduce a new material platform for planar JJs, the PbTe-Pb hybrid. The semiconductor, PbTe, was grown as a thin film via selective area epitaxy. The Josephson junction was defined by a shadow wall during the deposition of the superconductor Pb. Scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals a sharp semiconductor-superconductor interface. Gate-tunable supercurrent and multiple Andreev reflections are observed. A perpendicular magnetic field causes interference patterns of the switching current, exhibiting Fraunhofer-like and SQUID-like behaviors. We further demonstrate a prototype device for Majorana detection, wherein phase bias and tunneling spectroscopy are applicable.

Disorder is the primary obstacle in current Majorana nanowire experiments. Reducing disorder or achieving ballistic transport is thus of paramount importance. In clean and ballistic nanowire devices, quantized conductance is expected with plateau quality serving as a benchmark for disorder assessment. Here, we introduce ballistic PbTe nanowire devices grown using the selective-area-growth (SAG) technique. Quantized conductance plateaus in units of $2e^2/h$ are observed at zero magnetic field. This observation represents an advancement in diminishing disorder within SAG nanowires, as none of the previously studied SAG nanowires (InSb or InAs) exhibit zero-field ballistic transport. Notably, the plateau values indicate that the ubiquitous valley degeneracy in PbTe is lifted in nanowire devices. This degeneracy lifting addresses an additional concern in the pursuit of Majorana realization. Moreover, these ballistic PbTe nanowires may enable the search for clean signatures of the spin-orbit helical gap in future devices.

Semiconductor nanowires coupled to a superconductor provide a powerful testbed for quantum device physics such as Majorana zero modes and gate-tunable hybrid qubits. The performance of these quantum devices heavily relies on the quality of the induced superconducting gap. A hard gap, evident as vanishing subgap conductance in tunneling spectroscopy, is both necessary and desired. Previously, a hard gap has been achieved and extensively studied in III-V semiconductor nanowires (InAs and InSb). In this study, we present the observation of a hard superconducting gap in PbTe nanowires coupled to a superconductor Pb. The gap size ($\Delta$) is $\sim$ 1 meV (maximally 1.3 meV in one device). Additionally, subgap Andreev bound states can also be created and controlled through gate tuning. Tuning a device into the open regime can reveal Andreev enhancement of the subgap conductance, suggesting a remarkable transparent superconductor-semiconductor interface, with a transparency of $\sim$ 0.96. These results pave the way for diverse superconducting quantum devices based on PbTe nanowires.

PbTe nanowires coupled to a superconductor have recently been proposed as a potential Majorana platform. The hallmark of the one-dimensional nature of ballistic nanowires is their quantized conductance. Here, we report the observation of conductance plateaus at multiples of the quantized value $2e^2/h$ in PbTe nanowires at finite magnetic fields. The quantized plateaus, as a function of source-drain bias and magnetic field, allow for the extraction of the Land\'e $g$-factor, sub-band spacing and effective mass. The coefficient of 2 in the plateau conductance indicates the presence of valley degeneracy arising from the crystal orientation of the nanowires, which are grown on a (001) substrate. Occasionally, this degeneracy can be lifted by a gate voltage that breaks the mirror symmetry. Semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires are a leading material platform for the realization of Majorana zero modes. The semiconductors in previous studies are dominantly InAs or InSb. In this work, we show the induced superconductivity in a PbTe nanowire epitaxially coupled to a superconductor Pb. The Josephson junction device based on this hybrid reveals a gate-tunable supercurrent in the open regime and a hard superconducting gap in the tunneling regime. We report phase coherent electron transport in PbTe nanowire networks with a loop geometry. Magneto-conductance shows Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations with periods of $h/e$ and $h/2e$ in flux. The amplitude of $h/2e$ oscillations is enhanced near zero magnetic field, possibly due to interference between time-reversal paths. Temperature dependence of the AB amplitudes suggests a phase coherence length $\sim$ 8 - 12 $\mu$m at 50 mK. The chirality associated with broken time reversal symmetry in magnetically doped topological insulators has important implications to the quantum transport phenomena. Here we report the anomalous Hall effect studies in Mn- and Cr-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulators with varied thickness and doping content. By tracing the chirality of the Hall loops, we find that the Mn-type anomalous Hall effect with clockwise chirality is strengthened by the reduction of film thickness, which is opposite to that of the Cr-type anomalous Hall effect with counterclockwise chirality. We provide a phenomenological model to explain the evolution of magnetic order and anomalous Hall effect chirality in magnetically doped topological insulators., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Topological quantum computing is based on braiding of Majorana zero modes encoding topological qubits. A promising candidate platform for Majorana zero modes is semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires. The realization of topological qubits and braiding operations requires scalable and disorder-free nanowire networks. Selective area growth of in-plane InAs and InSb nanowires, together with shadow-wall growth of superconductor structures, have demonstrated this scalability by achieving various network structures. However, the noticeable lattice mismatch at the nanowire-substrate interface, acting as a disorder source, imposes a serious obstacle along with this roadmap. Here, combining selective area and shadow-wall growth, we demonstrate the fabrication of PbTe-Pb hybrid nanowires - another potentially promising Majorana system - on a nearly perfectly lattice-matched substrate CdTe, all done in one molecular beam epitaxy chamber. Transmission electron microscopy shows the single-crystal nature of the PbTe nanowire and its atomically sharp and clean interfaces to the CdTe substrate and the Pb overlayer, without noticeable inter-diffusion or strain. The nearly ideal interface condition, together with the strong screening of charge impurities due to the large dielectric constant of PbTe, hold promise towards a clean nanowire system to study Majorana zero modes and topological quantum computing., Comment: 19 pages, 4+7 figures

The accurate theoretical description of the underlying electronic structures is essential for understanding the superconducting mechanism of iron-based superconductors. Compared to bulk FeSe, the superconducting single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films exhibit a distinct electronic structure consisting of only electron Fermi pockets, due to the formation of a new band gap at the Brillouin zone (BZ) corners and an indirect band gap between the BZ center and corners. Although intensive studies have been carried out, the origin of such a distinct electronic structure and its connection to bulk FeSe remain unclear. Here we report a systematic study on the temperature evolution of the electronic structure in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A temperature-induced electronic phase transition was clearly observed at 200 K, above which the electronic structure of single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films restored to that of bulk FeSe, characterized by the closing of the new band gap and the vanishing of the indirect band gap. Moreover, the interfacial charge transfer effect induced band shift of ~ 60 meV was determined for the first time. These observations not only show the first direct evidence that the electronic structure of single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films originates from bulk FeSe through a combined effect of an electronic phase transition and an interfacial charge transfer, but also provide a quantitative basis for theoretical models in describing the electronic structure and understanding the superconducting mechanism in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Artificially engineered topological superconductivity has emerged as a viable route to create Majorana modes, exotic quasiparticles which have raised great expectations for storing and manipulating information in topological quantum computational schemes. The essential ingredients for their realization are spin non-degenerate metallic states proximitized to an s-wave superconductor. In this context, proximity-induced superconductivity in materials with a sizable spin-orbit coupling has been heavily investigated in recent years. Although there is convincing evidence that superconductivity may indeed be induced, it has been difficult to elucidate its topological nature. In this work, we systematically engineer an artificial topological superconductor by progressively introducing superconductivity (Nb) into metals with strong spin-orbital coupling (Pt) and 3D topological surface states (Bi2Te3). Through a longitudinal study of the character of superconducting vortices within s-wave superconducting Nb and proximity-coupled Nb/Pt and Nb/Bi2Te3, we detect the emergence of a zero-bias peak that is directly linked to the presence of topological surface states. Supported by a detailed theoretical model, our results are rationalized in terms of competing energy trends which are found to impose an upper limit to the size of the minigap separating Majorana and trivial modes, its size being ultimately linked to fundamental materials properties.

Identification and control of topological phases in topological thin films offer great opportunity for fundamental research and the fabrication of topology-based devices. Here, combining molecular beam epitaxy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations, we investigate the electronic structure evolution in (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 films with thickness from 2 to 13 quintuple layers. We identify several phases with their characteristic topological nature and evolution between them, i.e., dimensional crossover from a three-dimensional topological insulator with gapless surface state to its two-dimensional counterpart with gapped surface state, and topological phase transition from topological insulator to a normal semiconductor with increasing In concentration x. Furthermore, by introducing In alloying as an external knob of band gap engineering, we experimentally demonstrated the trivial topological nature of Bi2Se3 thin films (below 6 quintuple layers) as two-dimensional gapped systems, in consistent with our theoretical calculations. Our results provide not only a comprehensive phase diagram of (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 and a route to control its phase evolution, but also a practical way to experimentally determine the topological properties of a gapped compound by topological phase transition and band gap engineering., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

Spin-orbit coupling has proven indispensable in realizing topological materials and more recently Ising pairing in two-dimensional superconductors. This pairing mechanism relies on inversion symmetry breaking and sustains anomalously large in-plane polarizing magnetic fields whose upper limit is expected to diverge at low temperatures, although experimental demonstration of this has remained elusive due to the required fields. In this work, the recently discovered superconductor few-layer stanene, i.e. epitaxially strained $\alpha$-Sn, is shown to exhibit a new type of Ising pairing between carriers residing in bands with different orbital indices near the $\Gamma$-point. The bands are split as a result of spin-orbit locking without the participation of inversion symmetry breaking. The in-plane upper critical field is strongly enhanced at ultra-low temperature and reveals the sought for upturn.

A single atomic slice of {\alpha}-tin-stanene-has been predicted to host quantum spin Hall effect at room temperature, offering an ideal platform to study low-dimensional and topological physics. While recent research has intensively focused on monolayer stanene, the quantum size effect in few-layer stanene could profoundly change material properties, but remains unexplored. By exploring the layer degree of freedom, we unexpectedly discover superconductivity in few-layer stanene down to a bilayer grown on PbTe, while bulk {\alpha}-tin is not superconductive. Through substrate engineering, we further realize a transition from a single-band to a two-band superconductor with a doubling of the transition temperature. In-situ angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) together with first-principles calculations elucidate the corresponding band structure. Interestingly, the theory also indicates the existence of a topologically nontrivial band. Stanene, a single atomic layer of Sn in a honeycomb lattice, is predicted a candidate wide bandgap two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator and can host intriguing topological states of matter such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and topological superconductivity with different surface modifications. Despite intensive research efforts, one still cannot obtain bulk-insulating stanene samples-a prerequisite for any transport studies and applications of stanene. Here we show the experimental realization of an epitaxial stanene with an insulating bulk bandgap by using PbTe(111) substrates. With low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy, we are able to grow single layer stanene on PbTe(111). In-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows the characteristic stanene bands with its Fermi level lying in the bandgap. Doping Sr in PbTe removes the substrate states located in the stanene gap, resulting in a stanene sample with truly insulating bulk. We report transport studies of Mn-doped Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) films with accurately controlled thickness grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that films thicker than 5 quintuple-layer (QL) exhibit the usual anomalous Hall effect for magnetic TIs. When the thickness is reduced to 4 QL, however, characteristic features associated with the topological Hall effect (THE) emerge. More surprisingly, the THE vanishes again when the film thickness is further reduced to 3 QL. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the coupling between the top and bottom surface states at the dimensional crossover regime stabilizes the magnetic skyrmion structure that is responsible for the THE., Comment: 4 figures, with supplementary materials, to appear in Phys. Semimetallic tungsten ditelluride (WTe2) displays an extremely large non-saturating magnetoresistance (XMR), which is the subject of intense interest. This phenomenon is thought to arise from the combination of perfect n-p charge compensation with low carrier densities in WTe2 and presumably details of its band structure. Recently, "spin texture" induced by strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) has been observed in WTe2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). This provides a mechanism for protecting backscattering for the states involved and thus was proposed to play an important role in the XMR of WTe2. Here, based on our density functional calculations for bulk WTe2, we found a strong Rashba spin-orbit effect in the calculated band structure due to its non-centrosymmetric structure. This splits bands and two-fold spin degeneracy of bands is lifted. A prominent Umklapp interference pattern (a spectroscopic feature with involving reciprocal lattice vectors) can be observed by scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) measurements on WTe2 surface at 4.2 K. This differs distinctly from the surface atomic structure demonstrated at 77 K. The energy dependence of Umklapp interference shows a strong correspondence with densities of states integrated from ARPES measurement, manifesting a fact that the bands are spin-split on the opposites side of Gamma point. Spectroscopic survey reveals the ratio of electron/hole asymmetry changes alternately with lateral locations along b axis, providing a microscopic picture for double-carrier transport of semimetallic WTe2. The calculated band structure and Fermi surface is further supported by our ARPES results and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations measurements.

We report the superconductivity evolution of one unit cell (1-UC) and 2-UC FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) substrates with potassium (K) adsorption. By in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement, we find that the superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe films is continuously suppressed with increasing K coverage, whereas non-superconducting 2-UC FeSe films become superconducting with a gap of ~17 meV or ~11 meV depending on whether the underlying 1-UC films are superconducting or not. This work explicitly reveals that the interface electron-phonon coupling is strongly related to the charge transfer at FeSe/STO interface and plays vital role in enhancing Cooper pairing in both 1-UC and 2-UC FeSe films.

The surface of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) carries an even number of Dirac cones protected by crystalline symmetry. We epitaxially grew high quality Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te(111) films and investigated the TCI phase by in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te(111) films undergo a topological phase transition from trivial insulator to TCI via increasing the Sn/Pb ratio, accompanied by a crossover from n-type to p-type doping. In addition, a hybridization gap is opened in the surface states when the thickness of film is reduced to the two-dimensional limit. The work demonstrates an approach to manipulating the topological properties of TCI, which is of importance for future fundamental research and applications based on TCI.
