Abstract

Light has profoundly impacted modern medicine and healthcare, with numerous luminescent agents and imaging techniques currently being used to assess health and treat diseases. As an emerging concept in luminescence, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has shown great potential in biological applications due to its advantages in terms of brightness, biocompatibility, photostability, and positive correlation with concentration. This review provides a comprehensive summary of AIE luminogens applied in imaging of biological structure and dynamic physiological processes, disease diagnosis and treatment, and detection and monitoring of specific analytes, followed by representative works. Discussions on critical issues and perspectives on future directions are also included. This review aims to stimulate the interest of researchers from different fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, etc., thus promoting the development of AIE in the fields of life and health.

47. Reversible Local Protonation‐Deprotonation: Tuning Stimuli‐Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Hybrid Zinc Halides for Anti‐Counterfeiting and Encryption.

Abstract

Precise control over the organic composition is crucial for tailoring the distinctive structures and properties of hybrid metal halides. However, this approach is seldom utilized to develop materials that exhibit stimuli‐responsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of enantiomeric hybrid zinc bromides: biprotonated ((R/S)‐C12H16N2)ZnBr4 ((R/S‐LH2)ZnBr4) and monoprotonated ((R/S)‐C12H15N2)2ZnBr4 ((R/S‐LH1)2ZnBr4), derived from the chiral organic amine (R/S)‐2,3,4,9‐Tetrahydro‐1H‐carbazol‐3‐amine ((R/S)‐C12H14N2). These compounds showcase luminescent properties; the zero‐dimensional biprotonated form emits green light at 505 nm, while the monoprotonated form, with a pseudo‐layered structure, displays red luminescence at 599 and 649 nm. Remarkably, the reversible local protonation‐deprotonation behavior of the organic cations allows for exposure to polar solvents and heating to induce reversible structural and luminescent transformations between the two forms. Theoretical calculations reveal that the lower energy barrier associated with the deprotonation process within the pyrrole ring is responsible for the local protonation‐deprotonation behavior observed. These enantiomorphic hybrid zinc bromides also exhibit switchable circular dichroism (CD) and CPL properties. Furthermore, their chloride counterparts were successfully obtained by adjusting the halogen ions. Importantly, the unique stimuli‐responsive CPL characteristics position these hybrid zinc halides as promising candidates for applications in information storage, anti‐counterfeiting, and information encryption. 49. Regulating electrochemical performance of Cu7S4 electrodes via ligand engineering in copper cluster precursors.

Abstract

Cu-based chalcogenide materials exhibit significant promise for the development of Zn-metal-free anode materials for aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs). Here, we present the establishment of an efficient and universal strategy that capitalizes on the pyrolysis of copper nanoclusters to fabricate conversion-type Cu7S4 anodes engineered for AZIBs, showcasing outstanding electrochemical performance. Furthermore, by exploiting ligand engineering, we enable the precise control of both the type of molecular fragments generated during nanocluster pyrolysis, thus enabling the manipulation of vacancy concentrations and ion/electron migration in the resultant pyrolysis products. In contrast to the direct pyrolysis of metal salts and ligands, the products derived from copper nanoclusters exhibit enhanced specific capacity, rate performance, and overall stability. Abstract

Achieving precise and controllable hierarchical self-assembly of functional nanoclusters within crystal lattices to create distinct architectures is of immense significance, yet it creates considerable challenges. Here we successfully synthesized a silver nanowheel Ag40, along with its optically pure enantiomers S-/R-Ag40. Each species possesses an internal nanospace and exhibits host-guest interactions. These structures are constructed from primary building blocks (Ag9). By manipulating the surface anions and guest molecules, the nanowheels function as secondary building blocks, spontaneously organizing into complex double- and triple-helical crystalline superstructures or one-dimensional chains {Ag41}n through conformational matching and diverse noncovalent interactions. Moreover, we demonstrate that the water-mediated complex specifically assembled with uridine monophosphate nucleotides, resulting in chiral assemblies of Ag40 that exhibit chiroptical activity for specific recognition. Our findings provide insights into the efficient construction of assemblies with hollow frameworks and propose strategies for superstructure engineering by manipulating surface motifs.
