Thick airfoils are often used in the inboard sections of blades in commercial wind turbines. The main reason for this is to give the blade greater structural strength, but it is well known that thick airfoils degrade aerodynamic performance by stalling at relatively small angles of attack. The adoption of flatback airfoils instead of sharp trailing edges allows high lift coefficient to be maintained in thick airfoils. In this paper, we propose a novel airfoil design based on a passive flap to further improve the lift coefficient. This new design was tested by numerical simulation on several airfoils with different maximum thickness and different TE thickness. The improved design for flatback airfoils yields a higher lift coefficient, while the drag behaviour is strictly related to the baseline airfoil shape: some airfoils show a decrease in drag at certain angles of attack, while others exhibit a drag increase. In conclusion, the practical implications of the flap’s utilisation on a state-of-the-art blade designed for a 5 MW wind turbine are analysed. The findings demonstrate that, due to the enhanced lift coefficient, it is feasible to shorten the chord while maintaining the power output, thereby reducing material costs.

ABSTRACT Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) is a genetic condition arising from the presence of three chromosomes at position 21. Individuals diagnosed with this syndrome have a greater likelihood of developing systemic problems, as well as cognitive, developmental, and psychiatric disorders. This paper reports a case of a child with Down syndrome under treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, emphasizing its impact on quality of life. The mother’ perception on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was measuredby the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), Generic Core and Cancer Module Scales. The mother’s perception shown that physical and functional functioning indicated a higher negative impact on the child’s life. The lowest scores were in the domains nausea and anxiety about the procedure. Intraoral examination revealed an incomplete primary dentition with ectopic eruption. The child has had a multidisciplinary health care approach (pediatrician, hematologist, gastroenterologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist and dentist). Therefore, it is essential that health professionals, including dentists, to incorporateinto their practice the knowledge on the difficulties and emotional aspects of this population, providinga patient-centered humanized care.

Quantum Physics ,Physics - Optics - Abstract
Estimating the angular separation between two incoherent thermal sources is a challenging task for direct imaging, especially when it is smaller than or comparable to the Rayleigh length. In addition, the task of discriminating whether there are one or two sources followed by detecting the faint emission of a secondary source in the proximity of a much brighter one is in itself a severe challenge for direct imaging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate two tasks for superresolution imaging based on quantum state discrimination and quantum imaging techniques. We show that one can significantly reduce the probability of error for detecting the presence of a weak secondary source, especially when the two sources have small angular separations. In this work, we reduce the experimental complexity down to a single two-mode interferometer: we show that (1) this simple set-up is sufficient for the state discrimination task, and (2) if the two sources are of equal brightness, then this measurement can super-resolve their angular separation, saturating the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound. By using a collection baseline of 5.3~mm, we resolve the angular separation of two sources that are placed 15~$\mu$m apart at a distance of 1.0~m with an accuracy of $1.7\%$--this is between 2 to 3 orders of magnitudes more accurate than shot-noise limited direct imaging., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

In this paper, we propose a new 3D model for vertical-axis tidal turbines (VATTs) embedded in the shallow-water code SHYFEM. The turbine model is based on the Blade-Element∖Momentum (BEM) theory and, therefore, is able to predict turbine performance based on the local flow conditions and the geometric characteristics of the turbine. It is particularly suitable for studying turbine arrays, as it can capture the interactions between the turbines. For this reason, the model is used to test a tidal farm of 21 devices with fluid dynamic simulations. In particular, we deploy the farm at Portland Bill, which is a marine site characterised by a wide spread in the direction of the tidal currents during a flood-ebb tide cycle. We optimised the lateral and longitudinal spacing of the turbines in a fence using computational fluid dynamics simulations and then performed a sensitivity analysis by changing the distance between the fences. The results show that the greater the distance between the fences, the higher the power output. The increase in power generation is around 16%, but this implies a huge increase in the horizontal extent of the farm. Further assessments should be carried out, as the expansion of a marine area dedicated to energy exploitation may conflict with other stakeholder interests.

11. Quantum amplification of engineered classical states of light

- Abstract
Since their first conception, quantum technologies are now starting to become a reality promising to improve our everyday life with the prospect of enhanced non-invasive imaging systems, highly efficient and ultra sensitive sensors, and absolute security in digital telecommunications. Enormous advancements in terms of characterisation, manipulation, and detection of single quantum states have seen the birth of a plethora of different platforms and protocols capable of achieving such challenging tasks. Quantum communications, in particular, have already shown promising results in real life implementations closing the distance to what many have referred to as the quantum internet - the next generation of global telecommunications. However, one of the several roadblocks preventing the implementation of such technology on a global scale is quantum amplification. This Thesis introduces a novel probabilistic quantum amplifier for exotic quantum states (thermal state) showcasing its ability to manipulate their intensities via a unique double state displacement method. Additionally, the thesis presents a probabilistic quantum amplifier based on the coherent state comparison technique with the addition of an active feed-forward mechanism capable of simultaneously improving key quantum properties of a state and enhancing the amplifier's success probability. The Thesis also shows the experimental work undertaken in the context of quantum random number generation highlighting the limitations of optical heterodyne detection and setting a benchmark for future evaluations of similar systems.

Small-to-medium-sized wind turbines operate with wind speeds that are often modest, and it is therefore essential to exploit all possible means to concentrate the wind and thus increase the power extracted. The advantage that can be achieved by positioning the turbine on hilly reliefs, which act as natural diffusers, is well known, and some recent studies can be found on the effects of the characteristics of hilly terrain on the turbine performance. The literature shows numerous investigations on the behavior of ducted wind turbines, i.e., equipped with a diffuser. But so far, there is a lack of studies on the flow acceleration effects achievable by combining natural relief and a diffuser together. In this study, we analyze the performance of a 50 kW ducted turbine positioned on the top of hills of various shapes and slopes, with the aim of identifying the geometric characteristics of the diffuser most suitable for maximizing power extraction. The results show that a symmetrical convergent–divergent diffuser is well suited to exploit winds skewed by the slope of the hill, and therefore characterized by significant vertical velocity components. Due to its important convergent section, the diffuser is able to convey and realign the flow in the direction of the turbine axis. However, the thrust on the diffuser and therefore on the entire system increases dramatically, as does the turbulence released downwind.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Quantum random number generators (QRNG) represent an advanced solution for randomness generation, essential in every cryptographic applications. In this context, integrated arrays of single photon detectors have promising applications as QRNGs based on the spatial detection of photons. For the employment of QRNGs in Cryptography, it is necessary to have efficient methods to evaluate the so called quantum min-entropy that corresponds to the amount of the true extractable quantum randomness from the QRNG. Here we present an efficient method that allow to estimate the quantum min-entropy for a multi-detector QRNG. In particular, we will consider a scenario in which an attacker can control the efficiency of the detectors and knows the emitted number of photons. Eventually, we apply the method to a QRNG with $10^3$ detectors., Comment: Revtex

Introduction: Recent evidence suggests that oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction play critical roles in the pathophysiology of COVID-19 and Long-COVID. We hypothesized that a supplementation combining L-Arginine (to improve endothelial function) and Vitamin C (to reduce oxidation) could have favorable effects on Long-COVID symptoms. Methods: We designed a survey (LINCOLN: L-Arginine and Vitamin C improves Long-COVID), assessing several symptoms that have been associated with Long-COVID to be administered nationwide to COVID-19 survivors; the survey also included effort perception, measured using the Borg scale. Patients receiving the survey were divided in two groups, with a 2:1 ratio: the first group included patients that received L-Arginine + Vitamin C, whereas the second group received a multivitamin combination (alternative treatment). Results: 1390 patients successfully completed the survey. Following a 30-day treatment in both groups, the survey revealed that patients in the L-Arginine + Vitamin C treatment arm had significantly lower scores compared to patients who had received the multivitamin combination. There were no other significant differences between the two groups. When examining effort perception, we observed a significantly lower value (p

In conclusion, the practical implications of the flap's utilisation on a state-of-the-art blade designed for a 5 MW wind turbine are analysed. The findings demonstrate that, due to the enhanced lift coefficient, it is feasible to shorten the chord while maintaining the power output, thereby reducing material costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Objective: The present study aimed to analyze the accuracy of the Dolphin Imaging 11.9® computer program in the surgical prediction of the soft tissue facial profile. Methods: The investigators designed and implemented a retrospective study. It was used a sample of 55 patients, being 14 males and 41 females, aged from 19 to 55 years old. All patients were subjected to surgery orthognathic bimaxillary combined with mentoplasty, in Class II facial profile – Angle. Patients’ actual results were compared to the obtained up to a year and a half after the surgery procedure. The study was delineated in three phases. In the first phase, cephalometric preoperative radiographs were performed; in the second phase the postoperative cephalometries were made; in the third phase, the measurements of the soft profile of the virtual analysis were compared with the real post-surgical profile. The data was collected and subjected to statistical analysis in the “R” program, using the t test and ANOVA. Results: The results demonstrated that measures A’ and Eis were underestimated in -0.15 ± 0. 52 mm and -0.47 ± 1.05 mm, respectively, while measures Pg’ and ANL were overestimated at 0.76 ± 1.98 mm and 3.31 ± 3.60° respectively. There was no evidence of measures, Ls, Li and B’, being different between real and virtual. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that Dolphin 11.9® computer program complies with the function of preserving with reliability virtual surgical planning.

We present a novel 3D implementation of a horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) in the shallow water hydrostatic code SHYFEM. The uniqueness of this work involves the blade element momentum (BEM) approach: the turbine is parameterized by applying momentum sink terms in the x and y momentum equations. In this way, the turbine performance is the result of both the flow conditions and the turbine’s geometric characteristics. For these reasons, the model is suitable for farm-layout studies, since it is able to predict the realistic behavior of every turbine in a farm, considering the surrounding flow field. Moreover, the use of a shallow water code, able to reproduce coastal morphology, bathymetry wind, and tide effects, allows for studying turbine farms in realistic environments.
