The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of levels of self esteem and alcohol consumption in adolescents, by carrying out a transversal, descriptive study, in a college of nursing of Queretaro in Mexico, in the month of July 2008, with a sample of 109 adolescents, between 17 and 20 years old. For attainment of the data two instruments were applied: AUDIT and the Rosemberg self esteem scale. The majority of the participating adolescents had high self esteem (94.5%) and none presented low self esteem. Of the adolescents in the study 80.7% did not consume alcohol hazardously. It was concluded that the adolescents presented high self esteem and low alcohol consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to implement preventive programs related to alcohol consumption and to identify the protective factors to guarantee the maintenance of healthy habits for the adolescents. Background: Complex behaviors, such as physical activity (PA), may be related to different levels of influence., Objective: To analyze the role of social support, mood and alcohol consumption as psychosocial predictors on the engagement in PA among Brazilian workers., Methods: This is a quantitative, cross-sectional analytical study. A sample of 395 participants answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Social Support Scale for Physical Activities (SSSPA) and the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS)., Results: Analysis via Pearson's Correlation Test indicated a negative correlation between PA and depression and fatigue, and a positive correlation between PA and alcohol consumption, vigor and the four variables of social support (support of family members for walking; support of friends for walking; support of family members for moderate and vigorous physical activity; support of friends for moderate and vigorous physical activity). A positive relationship between PA and low-risk alcohol consumption was also identified. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that family support for walking, friends support for moderate and vigorous physical activity, vigor and alcohol consumption are predictors of PA. Hayes' moderation analysis indicated that social support has a moderating effect on the relationship between alcohol use and PA., Conclusion: Different factors may be involved in engaging in PA. A broader approach that addresses the singularities of individuals, especially in actions for different patterns of alcohol consumption, is recommended.

This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with the occurrence and recurrence of intentional self-poisoning with medications (ISP-M), and suicide deaths by ISP-M in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. In this cross-sectional analytical study, we used logistic regression models to analyze data obtained through health information systems. Factors associated with use of ISP-M as a method were female gender, white skin color, occurrence in urban areas and at home. The ISP-M as a method was less reported in people presumed under the influence of alcohol. Lower chance of death by suicide using ISP-M was found among young people and adults (under 60 years old).

This qualitative study was carried out with 10 dyads of patients-family members to explore their perception about psychotic relapses. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview from April to August 2019, in Brazil, and analyzed using the thematic analysis proposed by Braun & Clark. Four main themes emerged from the interviews: (1) defining and describing the psychotic relapses; (2) risk factors for psychotic relapse; (3) protective factors for psychotic relapse; and (4) early warning signs: identification of an episode of psychotic relapse. Objective: To describe the predictors of perceived stress in a broad sample of workers at a Brazilian public university., Method: Cross-sectional study carried out with a convenience sample of workers at a public university in Brazil. To be included in the present study, the worker had to be an administrative technician. From March to August, 2017, workers were surveyed, and 929 participants answered the questionnaires of sociodemographic characterization, work and health conditions, perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale), depression (Beck Depression Inventory), and anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory)., Results: The multiple linear regression showed that higher perceived stress was associated with being younger and male, occupying a higher or technical position, and presenting higher levels of depression and anxiety., Conclusion: These findings have implications for occupational health nurses and other health professionals to identify workers at risk for chronic and mental illness through predictors of perceived stress and to guide institutions in planning practical actions for stress management interventions.

Objective: to create and validate a high-fidelity simulation scenario about the initial support to suicide bereaved people., Method: a methodological research study to create and validate a simulation scenario about postvention. Its creation was based on scientific recommendations, the validation process was carried out by experts, based on an instrument developed by the authors; the data were statistically analyzed using the Content Validity Index and Gwet concordance coefficient., Results: the scenario was created to provide initial support to suicide bereaved people in the Primary Health Care context. As learning objectives, welcoming, health care and organization monitoring were proposed according to technical-scientific recommendations. The scenario was validated by 10 specialists in the themes of postvention (5 judges) and high-fidelity simulation (5 judges). The scenario items met the acceptance and reliability criteria (Content Validity Index = 0.80) and satisfactory concordance (Gwet coefficient = 0.640)., Conclusion: the study presented in full a scenario on postvention with innovative potential that can be used free of charge in clinical simulation development during training of different categories of health professionals, to act in support of suicide bereaved people.

Aim: To describe the development and divulgation of a website for the prevention of suicidal behavior and to analyze posted themes and access metrics., Method: Mixed study developed from 2019 to 2020 on the "InspirAção" website. All user posts were collected from WordPress and subjected to thematic analysis. The access metrics were obtained by Google Analytics., Results: The development of the website contains systematically planned steps to meet international recommendations. In the initial six months of the site, there were 64,628 views and 18,161 sessions from different countries. The main themes posted by users were "Life and what gives it meaning", "Love, comfort and acceptance", "Self-knowledge, authenticity and transformation" and "Overcoming, altruism and transcendence"., Conclusions: "InspirAção" contains innovative features, incorporates protective factors and meets requirements for online and community suicide prevention. Background: Health complexity includes biological, psychological, social, and health systems. Having complex health needs is associated with poorer clinical outcomes and higher healthcare costs. Care management for people with health complexity is increasingly recommended in primary health care (PHC). The INTERMED complexity assessment grid showed adequate psychometric properties in specialized settings. This study aimed to evaluate INTERMED's validity and feasibility to assess health complexity in an adult PHC population., Method: The biopsychosocial health care needs of 230 consecutive adult patients from three Brazilian PHC services were assessed using the INTERMED interview. Participants with a total score >20 were classified as "complex". Quality of life was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF (WHOQOL-BREF); symptoms of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); social support using the Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS); comorbidity levels using the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). We developed two questionnaires to evaluate health services use, and patient perceived feasibility of INTERMED., Results: 42 participants (18.3%) were classified as "complex". A moderate correlation was found between the total INTERMED score and the total scores of WHOQOL-BREF (rho = - 0.59) and HADS (rho = 0.56), and between the social domains of INTERMED and MOS-SSS (rho = -0.44). After adjustment, the use of PHC (β = 2.12, t = 2.10, p < 0.05), any other health care services (β = 3.05, t = 3.97, p < 0.01), and any medication (β = 3.64, t = 4.16, p < 0.01) were associated with higher INTERMED scores. The INTERMED internal consistency was good (ω = 0.83), and the median application time was 7 min. Introduction: Understanding the meaning of life after a suicide attempt experience provides greater knowledge about the process of resignification, connections and commitment to life, which can be useful in different therapeutic approaches., Objective: Understand the meaning of life after a suicide attempt., Method: Qualitative study with eight Brazilian adults assisted in mental health service. The data were collected in 2018 by semi-strutured interviews and group meetings that used artistic resources to facilitate expression.The Symbolic Interactionism was the theoretical reference used and the data were submitted to thematic analysis., Results: Three themes were identified: "Searches in the affective, relational and spiritual field" (manifestations of affection, zeal, understanding and welcome and seemed to increase the link and commitment to life, as well as the openness to resignify it); "Life and the constancy of impermanence" (life as an alternation between weakness and strength, crisis and well-being, problems and overcoming); and "Discoveries and relationship with one's own self" (a self previously self-destructive could be resigned as capable of overcoming, resisting and developing resilience)., Conclusions: The study provides important insights to be addressed in clinical practice, in the protocol design, institutional policies, as well as in the training of professionals., (Copyright © 2021. Introduction: Drug-drug interactions among people with suicidal behavior is a challenging topic, considering the harm it poses for patients already vulnerable and the lack of literature on the thematic. This aspect must not be neglected in research and clinical practice, and thus requires thorough investigation., Objective: to investigate predictors of drug-drug interaction of prescribed drugs and the prescription of two or more drugs for people admitted due to suicidal behavior in a psychiatric emergency department (short-stay hospital ward)., Method: A cross-sectional study with retrospective approach, carried out in a Brazilian psychiatric emergency unit in 2015. Data about first and last medical prescriptions were collected from 127 patients' files. Descriptive statistics and the Zero Adjusted Logarithmic Distribution (ZALG) model were adopted, with the significance level α = 0.05., Results: Potential drug-drug interactions were found in most of the first and last prescriptions. The sample majority were female, with previous suicide attempts, being discharged from the hospital with three drugs (or more) prescribed, and without referral to any health service. Age and comorbidities were predictors of more drug prescriptions and the amount of prescribed drugs was the most important predictor of drug-drug interactions (quantity and severity)., Conclusions: the variables associated with drug-drug interactions and prescription of two or more drugs among people with suicidal behavior needs to be investigated in different contexts and addressed in interventions with the aim to promote patient safety., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2022 The Authors. WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Relapse rates are high among patients who have experienced first-episode psychosis (FEP). Psychotic relapses are associated with worse quality of life and poorer functionality of the FEP patient. The use of psychoactive substances, non-adherence to drug treatment, and high expressed emotion (EE) are notable predictors of relapse after the FEP. Although some studies have suggested that psychotic relapse may be associated with a family environment with high levels of emotional over-involvement (EOI), this finding is still inconsistent across different cultures. EE specific components must be evaluated and interpreted according to the context of cultural norms. There is a scarcity of studies on the role of depression in the occurrence of relapses after the FEP, and the results remain uncertain. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This study explored the predictors of psychotic relapses in Brazilian patients who experienced FEP. Our results indicate that 29.2% of the patients relapsed after the FEP. Patients diagnosed with depression and high-EOI in the family environment were predictors of psychotic relapses in this population. This study expands knowledge about the cultural specificity of EOI and the role of depression in psychotic relapse. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Nursing professionals must consider the implications of the family environment and depression in the course of psychosis. Family interventions and the appropriate treatment of depression are important for improving the prognosis of FEP patients. ABSTRACT: Introduction Psychotic relapse may be associated with relatives' high emotional over-involvement (EOI) and with a diagnosis of major depressive episode (MDE) among first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients, but the results are still inconsistent across different cultures. Aim Evaluate the predictors of relapse in FEP patients. Method Prospective cohort study with 6-month follow-up conducted with 65 dyads of patients and relatives from an early intervention unit in Brazil. At the baseline interview, relatives answered to a sociodemographic data form and to the Family Questionnaire. Patients provided sociodemographic and clinical data and answered the Measurement of Treatment Adherence; the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test; the Severity of Dependence Scale to assess cannabis dependence, and the MDE module of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Psychotic relapses were evaluated using items from the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. The data were analysed using multiple logistic regression. Results 29.2% of the patients presented at least one psychotic relapse. High-EOI and MDE were predictors of psychotic relapses. Discussion Our findings expand the knowledge about the cultural specificity of EOI and the role of depression in psychotic relapse. Studies of family nursing interventions have shown positive results for the health of individuals and families. To increase the availability of instruments that evaluate the practice of family nursing, this research adapted and validated the Family Nursing Practice Scale (FNPS) for use in Brazil with a sample of 144 hospital nurses using a cross-sectional design. The adaptation process involved back-translation, validation by a committee of experts, and semantic analysis. Content validity was analyzed through the content validity coefficient (CVC); construct validity was analyzed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and convergent and discriminant validation through average variance extracted (AVE). The reliability of the measure was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha index and composite reliability (CR). The results indicate that the adapted version of FNPS is recommended for family nursing research, education, or clinical practice with Brazilian nurses.

Objectives: to report the experience using ludic strategies for the teaching-learning in the elaboration of the genogram and ecomap; and the use of these instruments by Nursing students in the Primary Health Care services., Methods: an experience report of the discipline Integrity of Care I (Integralidade do Cuidado I), of the Nursing School of Ribeirao Preto. Problems scenarios were created to approach the genogram and ecomap, comprising different family arrangements, represented by pedagogic puppets., Results: students actively participated, held collective discussions, elaborated genogram, and ecomap, identified the type of family, and the stages of the vital cycle, providing increased dynamics and interactivity. Subsequently, in supervised activities in Primary Health Care services, students elaborated the genogram and ecomap to monitor a family., Final Considerations: the use of ludic strategies propitiates the teamwork, active interaction of the group, and the creativity. The articulation between theory and practice resulted in a significant learning.

Objectives: The aim of that study was to analyze reasons for living, overcoming experiences and messages of support directed to people with suicidal behavior., Results: The analysis resulted in the categories: "Social, Interpersonal and Emotional Stressors", "Emotional and Relational Needs", "Persistence and Resilience", "Counseling", and "Barriers to Help Someone at Risk of Suicide", in which was expressed the importance of social support, persistence and resilience, counseling people in distress and identifying important barriers to help someone at suicide risk., Conclusion: This study reveals experiences and behaviors related to helping people at risk, coping mechanisms, risk and protective factors related to suicide prevention., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. This study analyzed how news coverage about suicides is published in the Brazilian electronic media and evaluated if the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) were complied with in the online media. This quantitative, documentary and retrospective study investigated 89 published news items about suicide in 2017 in the Brazilian newspaper sites with the largest circulation. Descriptive statistics and tests of association were used for data analysis. The majority of news items contained neither content to be avoided nor aspects recommended by the WHO. The most frequent characteristics of the reported cases do not correspond directly to the epidemiological profile of suicidal behavior, but to media interests. Actions are needed to foster media involvement in suicide prevention, dissemination of resources and strategies to support and reduce stigma and the contagion effect.

To analyze the predictors of internalized stigma among people with mood disorders, we conducted an analytical observational cross-sectional study with 108 people with mood disorders in a public service setting in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We applied a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale, the Medication Adherence Scale, the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-Anchored, and the Herth Hope Index. We analyzed the data using descriptive statistics, average comparison tests, a correlation test, and multiple linear regression. Internalized stigma was associated with symptomatology, history of aggressive behavior, psychiatric hospitalizations, suicide attempts, hopelessness, nonadherence to psychotropic medications, and unemployment. The predictors of internalized stigma were unemployment, more psychiatric symptoms, history of previous suicide attempts, and less hope. Clinical interventions and investigations for stigma reduction and psychosocial rehabilitation should incorporate the factors associated with self-stigma (aggressive behavior, history of psychiatric hospitalizations, suicide attempts, hopelessness, nonadherence to medication, and unemployment).

This article evaluated the predictors of EE and its components, EOI and CC, in relatives of first episode psychosis patients (FEP) in Brazil. Cross-sectional observational study conducted with 82 dyads of FEP patients and their relatives. Data collection instruments: sociodemographic and clinical data questionnaire , Family Questionnaire , Zarit Burden Interview and Morisky Medication Adherence Scale . Logistic and linear regression models were used. Our results indicate that patient's age, relative's sex, daily time spent together, and family burden were predictors of EE and its components. Our findings may be helpful in planning nursing interventions to reduce EE and prevent psychotic relapses.

Background: Regular practice of physical activity is associated with better quality of life and functioning in people with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no evidence of the association between physical activity and quality of life and global functioning among people in the initial stages of psychosis. The aim to explore the association of the level of physical activity with quality of life and global functioning among patients in early stages of psychosis., Subjects and Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in an early intervention program in 2016. The socio-demographic and clinical variables were assessed via a form; the adherence through the Measurement of Treatment Adherence; the global functioning through the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale; the level of physical activity through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and quality of life through the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The Mann-Whitney test was used for analysis., Results: A total of eighty-five participants (mean age=32, 57.6% were men) were assessed. Of the 85, 46 (54.1%) were classified as physically active. The physically active patients presented higher values, on average (standard deviation), in relation to the SF-36 domain of physical functioning (active patients: 87.1 (20.9) vs. inactive patients 80.1 (20.5) inactive; p=0.016), and global functioning when compared to the physically inactive group (active patients: 71.5 (17.6) vs. inactive patients 60.1 (20.9); p=0.011)., Conclusion: Higher levels of physical activity are associated with better quality of life and higher global functioning in patients in early stages of psychosis.

The study aimed to understand the family experience in the identification of the first-episode psychosis in young family members. Qualitative research using symbolic interactionism and narrative. Data were collected through depth interview with 13 relatives of 11 young patients treated for the first-episode psychosis. The families showed behavior consistent with the meanings they gave to the disease process of the young relatives, represented by categories: "waiting move: trying to justify the behavior of the adolescent", "not understanding the psychosis", and "seeking help". This research fostered the understanding of how families decided to seek help in the healthcare system. It is important to investigate the care given to people with suicidal behavior, as it is an important predictor of future death by suicide and there is a lack of studies on this issue in Brazil. This study had the objective of investigating assistance related to suicidal behavior at a mobile emergency service and sociodemographic and clinical associated factors. This was a quantitative, cross-sectional study based on documental information. The data were collected through manual consultation of nursing records in which call-outs for suicidal behavior in the year 2014 were documented. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-squared test, Fisher's exact test, correlation tests, and comparison of means tests. In the 313 records analyzed there was a predominance of adult women with self-inflicted drug poisoning, attended to in their own residence and referred to pre-hospital emergency medical services. There was a lack of documentation on signs, symptoms, and grievances in most cases. The interventions most carried out by the nurses were related to monitoring of clinical parameters. There were differences related to the victim's sex and lethality, suicide attempt method, referral to emergency services, and semester of occurrence (January-June, July-December). Suicide attempts through self-poisoning or self-inflicted injuries differed in relation to time of call-out, waiting time, lethality, documentation on clinical assessment and interventions, and referral to emergency services. Background: Families are the main caregivers of people with schizophrenia. Family dynamic and expressed emotion (EE) of relatives are fundamental determinants on the course of schizophrenia., Method: This study analyzed socio-demographic and clinical factors related to EE components. A total of 94 dyads (patients with schizophrenia and their relatives) were recruited from three mental health clinics. A form containing socio-demographic and clinical variables and the Brazilian version of Family Questionnaire were used and the data were analyzed through regression model., Results: Results showed that factors such as patients' occupation status and patients' age, as well as relatives' gender and the degree of relatedness, were related to emotional overinvolvement and critical comments levels., Conclusion: This is the first study in the Brazilian cultural context that evaluates EE components and related factors on families of patients with schizophrenia. Other studies concerning EE on different cultural contexts and possible interventions must be carried out to help health professionals to improve patient and family care.

The purpose of the current study was to explore family members' perceptions of the causes of first-episode psychosis (FEP). A qualitative study with 68 family members of patients with FEP was performed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and submitted for thematic analysis. The attributions for FEP were: use of psychoactive substances as a trigger; influence of genetic and personal factors; exposure to stressful life events; and lack of previous health care and knowledge about psychotic symptoms. Knowledge of possible attributions for the onset of psychosis may be valuable in optimizing early identification of individuals with FEP. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Family Health Care's field of  Ribeirão Preto city, São Paulo, Brazil to identify the prevalence of substance-related disorders and mental distress among patients with mental disorders. We also aimed to identify sociodemographic and social support risk factors. The data collection was done using medical records, the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ-6), Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and home visits. Of the 272 families studied, 211 contained individuals with mental disorders, and 61 included individuals who had substance-related disorders, or both. The mental disorders recorded in these families were most frequently mood disorders, followed by neurotic disorders, stress-related disorders and somatoform disorders. Women received twice as many psychotropic prescriptions associated with non-psychiatric medication. A significant relationship was established between education and mental distress as measured using the SRQ-20 (p = 0.024). The SSQ-6 revealed a family presence of social support in all of the conditions established by the six questions.

Background: Physical restraint in psychiatric units is a common practice but extremely controversial and poorly evaluated by methodologically appropriate investigations. The cultural issues and professionals' perceptions and attitudes are substantial contributors to the frequency of restraint that tend to be elevated. Aim In this qualitative study, we aimed to understand the experiences and perceptions of nursing staff regarding physical restraint in psychiatric units., Method: Through theoretical sampling, 29 nurses from two Brazilian psychiatric units participated in the study. Data were collected from 2014 to 2016 from individual interviews and analyzed through thematic analysis, employing theoretical presuppositions of symbolic interactionism., Results: Physical restraint was considered unpleasant, challenging, risky, and associated with dilemmas and conflicts. The nursing staff was often exposed to the risks and injuries related to restraint. Professionals sought strategies to reduce restraint-related damages, but still considered it necessary due to the lack of effective options to control aggressive behavior., Conclusions: This study provides additional perspectives about physical restraint and reveals the need for safer, humanized and appropriate methods for the care of aggressive patients that consider the real needs and rights of these patients., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. The meaning ascribed to suicidal behaviours may influence the quality of the care provided to people at risk of suicide. Such a phenomenon has yet to be properly investigated amongst nursing undergraduate students, the aim of this study being to gain an understanding of the meanings of suicidal behaviour for a particular group of nurses. The study, which utilized grounded theory, was conducted in Brazil in 2016-2017 with 30 undergraduate students. The findings indicated that suicidal behaviour, classified according to the individual beliefs and judgements of the participants, presented a significant barrier to the delivery of care and was complex and multifaceted care phenomenon. Participants were often reluctant to discuss the topic, seemingly wanting to distance themselves from the care of persons exhibiting suicidal behaviour, and to avoid professional engagements relating to suicide prevention. Significant work is required in raising both an awareness and knowledge of suicidal behaviour befitting the promotion of tolerance, emotional competency, resilience, and empathy amongst nursing students., (© 2017 Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Inc.)

Objective: Assess the relationship between psychiatric relapses of patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, the levels of expressed emotion among their relatives and related factors., Method: Prospective study carried out at a mental health outpatient clinic and two Psychosocial Care Centers, with patients and relatives responding to the Family Questionnaire - Brazilian Portuguese Version, a form containing socio-demographic and clinical variables and a structured script to assess relapses. A logistic regression model was used for the analysis., Results: A total of 89 dyads participated in the study. Of the patients investigated, 31% presented relapses and, among the relatives, 68% presented elevated levels of expressed emotion. The relationship between expressed emotion and the relapses was not significant. The logistic regression analysis demonstrated that when there were a higher number of hospital admissions in the two years preceding the study, the chance of the patient relapsing in the 24-month period is 1.34., Conclusion: Expressed emotion was insufficient to predict relapses. Thus, a relapse should be understood as a multifactorial phenomenon. These results provide support for interventions and investigations on the multiple factors involved in the evolution of schizophrenia patients in follow-up at community-based health services.

Background and Purpose: The Family Questionnaire-Brazilian Portuguese Version (FQ-BPV) has been preliminarily validated in the Brazilian population. This study assessed the predictive validity of the FQ-BPV for relapse in patients with schizophrenia., Methods: Ninety-four dyads (patients with schizophrenia and their relatives) were recruited from three mental health clinics. Expressed emotion was assessed using the FQ-BPV. Presence of relapse was assessed at 6-, 9-, 12-, and 18-month follow-ups and analyzed through logistic regressions., Results: The critical comments (CC) domain of the FQ-BPV was statistically significant at 18 months. However, the model was not sufficiently robust to classify individuals correctly into relapse or no relapse categories., Conclusion: The FQ-BPV did not predict relapse well and we cannot recommend it for that purpose in Brazil without further studies.

Objective: To understand the meaning of stigma for people with mental disorders., Method: A qualitative study with 46 Brazilian adults with mental disorders. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and nonparticipant observation and submitted for a thematic analysis with symbolic interactionism., Results: Stigma was considered as an experience of incomprehension and suffering. The society has difficulty in empathizing, respecting differences and understanding the extent of the suffering of people with mental disorders. Participants recommended anti-stigma strategies that included promoting knowledge and respecting differences., Conclusions: The present study contributes new insights to be addressed in interventions to reduce the suffering and impact of stigma.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Self-confident health professionals with positive and understanding attitudes can take better care of people with suicidal behaviour, but the factors associated with these attitudes are not known. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The majority of nursing professionals had no experience or training in mental health or suicide. They were less self-confident and had more negative attitudes. Nurses and nursing assistants who worked before in mental health services were more understanding with people with suicidal behaviour. Nurses and nursing assistants who were working in prehospital services were less self-confident to taking care of people with suicidal behaviour. Some members of the nursing team had already seriously considered committing suicide. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: The practicing, support and training in mental health may improve the nurses' attitudes and emotional competencies. It is important to know why few nurses had suicide-related training, despite the relevance of this issue. Training in mental health or suicide need to include attitudinal and emotional competencies. It is important to offer emotional support to emergency nursing professionals., Abstract: Background The attitudes towards suicide of emergency nurses may affect the care provided. However, the factors associated with these attitudes remain unclear. Objective To investigate attitudes towards suicidal behaviour and associated factors among nursing professionals working in emergency settings. Methods A cross-sectional observational study including 28 nurses and 118 who were nursing assistants employed at two emergency services in Brazil was conducted. Data were collected in 2015 using a self-administered sociodemographic questionnaire and the Suicide Behavior Attitude Questionnaire (SBAQ). Results The majority of participants reported having no experience or training in mental health or suicide. They reported more negative feelings towards the patient and a lower self-perception of professional competence regarding suicidal behaviours, and these attitudes seemed to reinforce each other. Nurses who worked in mental health services reported less moralistic/judgemental attitudes. Working in prehospital services was associated with having a lower self-perception of professional competence. There were professionals who reported thinking seriously about committing suicide. Conclusion When combined with support and training, practicing mental health nursing may serve as an opportunity to develop favourable attitudes and emotional competences, and these issues need to be addressed in suicide education strategies., (© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Aim: To understand emergency nursing experiences in assisting people with suicidal behavior., Method: Grounded theory study with symbolic interactionism conducted in 2015 to 2016 in Brazil with 19 nurses., Results: Assistance for people with suicidal behavior is critical, challenging, evokes different feelings and requires knowledge, skills and emotional control. Nurses did not feel prepared or supported, and identified recurrent gaps and problems. Nurses occupied a limited role, restricted to attending to physical needs.
