18. Accelerating gradient projection methods for $\ell_1$-constrained signal recovery by steplength selection rules

Abstract

We propose a new gradient projection algorithm that compares favorably with the fastest algorithms available to date for $\ell_1$-constrained sparse recovery from noisy data, both in the compressed sensing and inverse problem frameworks. The method exploits a line-search along the feasible direction and an adaptive steplength selection based on recent strategies for the alternation of the well-known Barzilai-Borwein rules. The convergence of the proposed approach is discussed and a computational study on both well-conditioned and ill-conditioned problems is carried out for performance evaluations in comparison with five other algorithms proposed in the literature., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Femoral head separation (FHS) is characterized by the detachment of growth plate (GP) and articular cartilage, occurring in tibia and femur. However, the molecular mechanisms involved with this condition are not completely understood. Therefore, genes and biological processes (BP) involved with FHS were identified in 21-day-old broilers through RNA sequencing of the femoral GP. 13,487 genes were expressed in the chicken femoral head transcriptome of normal and FHS-affected broilers. From those, 34 were differentially expressed (DE; FDR ≤0.05) between groups, where all of them were downregulated in FHS-affected broilers. The main BP were enriched in receptor signaling pathways, ossification, bone mineralization and formation, skeletal morphogenesis, and vascularization. RNA-Seq datasets comparison of normal and FHS-affected broilers with 21, 35 and 42 days of age has shown three shared DE genes (FBN2, C1QTNF8, and XYLT1) in GP among ages. Twelve genes were exclusively DE at 21 days, where 10 have already been characterized (SHISA3, FNDC1, ANGPTL7, LEPR, ENSGALG00000049529, OXTR, ENSGALG00000045154, COL16A1, RASD2, BOC, GDF10, and THSD7B). Twelve SNPs were associated with FHS (p < 0.0001). Out of those, 5 were novel and 7 were existing variants located in 7 genes (RARS, TFPI2, TTI1, MAP4K3, LINK54, and AREL1). We have shown that genes related to chondrogenesis and bone differentiation were downregulated in the GP of FHS-affected young broilers. Therefore, these findings evince that candidate genes pointed out in our study are probably related to the onset of FHS in broilers.

Abstract

The present work is focused on tubular hydrogen titanate nanotubes synthesized by the hydrothermal method and decorated with similar loadings of 1 wt % of Au, Ag, Mn, and Ni. The obtained metal/titanate nanotubes were characterized by UV–Vis and XPS to determine the energy level positions of the valence and conduction bands to elucidate the behavior in the H2 production, where it seems that the valence band energy of the photocatalysts limited the H2 production under 365-nm irradiation. The photocatalysts exhibited H2 production in the following order: Au/NT > Ag/NT > Mn/NT > Ni/NT. The outcomes suggest that the Au and Ag noble metals displayed superior H2 production because they showed conduction band energy values between 0.45–0.5 eV with respect to those obtained with Mn and Ni, which were between 0.55–0.6 eV when hydrogen titanate nanotubes were employed as supports and metal nanoparticles were added. Mainly Au and Ag improved the UV light driven activity by making more efficient the electron donor/acceptor level and the band energy level of defects between the conduction band minimum (reduction) and valence band maximum (oxidation). The Au/NT and Ag/NT photocatalysts showed overall yields of 3400 and 2780 µmol·h−1·gcat−1 after 8 h under the established reaction conditions; likewise, Au/NT displayed stability up to four cycles of continuous reaction. Abstract

Au/TiO2, Pd/TiO2, Pt/TiO2 and Rh/TiO2 catalysts were synthesized by the deposition–precipitation with urea (DPU) and sol–gel (SG) methods to elucidate the influence of the preparation method on the catalytic activity in the CO oxidation at low temperature. In all cases, the metal loading was 1 wt%. The effect of the synthesis method was remarkable for the Au/TiO2 and Pd/TiO2 materials and less important for the Pt/TiO2 and Rh/TiO2 materials. However, for the four materials, the DPU method revealed the most active materials at 0 °C with respect to the sol–gel method. Au/TiO2 and Rh/TiO2, obtained by the DPU method, were active at temperatures below 0 °C and showed outstanding catalytic activity in comparison with the Pd/TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 catalysts. Density Functional Theory based calculations on M13/TiO2 (M = Au, Pd, Pt or Rh) structures revealed a superior charge transfer from a defective support to Au, while Rh triggered O2 bond scission in the oxygen vacancy site located in the metal-support interface.
