OBJECTIVE To analyse the association between use of oral contraception and risk of pelvic endometriosis. DESIGN We compared use of oral contraception in women with and without endometriosis. PARTICIPANTS Eligible for the study were women with primary or secondary infertility (n = 393) or chronic pelvic pain (n = 424), requiring laparoscopy, consecutively observed between September 1995 and January 1996 in 15 obstetrics and gynaecology departments in Italy. RESULTS Out of the 817 women included in the study, 345 had a diagnosis of endometriosis; 164 (47.5%) women with endometriosis and 139 (29.4%) without the disease reported ever using oral contraception. In comparison with never users the estimated odds ratios (OR) of endometriosis were 1.8 (95% CI 1.0-3.3) in current users and 1.6 (95% CI 1.1-2.4) in ex-users. No clear relation emerged between duration of oral contraceptive use and risk of endometriosis. In comparison with never users, the OR was 1.8 (95% CI 1.1-3.0) for women reporting their last use of oral contraception or = 5 years before interview. CONCLUSIONS The study suggests that oral contraception is associated with an increased risk of endometriosis but this finding is based on a selected population and cannot generalised to all women with endometriosis.

Nell’ambito di ricerche dedicate alla caratterizzazione nutrizionale delle carni di agnello pesante “Qualità Controllata”, si è colta l’occasione per approfondire lo studio dei processi ossidativi a carico degli acidi grassi e del colesterolo nella matrice sotto esame, sia allo stato crudo, sia dopo l’applicazione di tecniche di cottura riconducibili a quelle domestiche. Allo stato crudo, la carne ovina oggetto di indagine ha manifestato livelli di presenza molto modesti sia per TBARS, sia per COPs. Le tecniche di cottura più lente hanno indotto un significativo incremento in TBARS. La percentuale di colesterolo ossidato è rimasta invariata passando dallo stato crudo a quello cotto, come effetto di un incremento relativo degli ossisteroli primari a discapito di quelli secondari.

Three Italian processed pork products (salame Milano, coppa and pancetta) were submitted to radiation processing at 2, 5, and 8 kGy and vacuum stored. The products submitted to radiation processing at 2 and 5 kGy did not present a significant increase of lipid oxidation products both just after the treatment and after 60 days of vacuum storage. However, a marked increase was observed at 8 kGy radiation dose. The content of 2-alchylcyclobutanones increased with radiation dose. Their presence has been recorded occasionally at 2 kGy and constantly at higher radiation doses (5 and 8 kGy). A significant increase of 2-alchylcyclobutanones was observed during vacuum storage of irradiated pork products.

Le carni rosse sono state oggetto di un importante recupero di immagine nel corso degli ultimi anni, grazie soprattutto ad una rinnovata ed approfondita consapevolezza dei loro pregi nutrizionali, parte dei quali legati al loro essere fonte significativa di numerosi elementi minerali. Con la presente indagine si è inteso fornire un contributo alla conoscenza sia del tenore in macro- e micro-elementi delle carni di agnello pesante, crude come cotte, sia dei pertinenti coefficienti di ritenzione vera. Per effetto dell’applicazione di diverse tecniche di cottura alle carni di agnello pesante, Na, K, Mg e P sono andati incontro a percolamento, mentre S, Fe, Zn e Cu sono stati soddisfacentemente ritenuti. Il comportamento alla cottura di Ca, Mn e Cr necessita di ulteriori approfondimenti.
