Abstract In this study, we aimed to investigate the validity of the hue-heat effect on the body thermal sensitivity. Previous research on thermal comfort has proposed associations between red and warmth, and blue with cold. However, inconsistencies in confirming this effect have arisen, with studies often relying on subjective scales for thermal comfort assessment, introducing potential confounding variables. To overcome these limitations, we conducted a study focusing on the hue-heat effect within the domain of thermal sensitivity, providing a more objective measurement of thermal perception. Participants (n = 26) were required to compare the perceived temperatures inside different climate chambers lighted by either red or blue lights following two different paradigms. In the congruent paradigm, the warmest chamber was lighted by red lights, while the coldest chamber had blue lights. On the contrary, the incongruent condition featured the warmest chamber with blue lights and the coldest chamber with red lights, thereby violating the hue-heat effect. We found comparable performance in both conditions, challenging the hypothesis that congruence between colour and temperature enhances thermal perception. Notably, some participants aligned with our hypothesis, while others exhibited opposing behaviour, highlighting the potentially subjective nature of the hue-heat effect. Furthermore, we compared the present results with our previous data without the added stimuli of the lights. We highlight the results of those studies that have investigated the plastic reorganization processes that occur within the human brain as a consequence of visual deprivation, as well as how these processes give rise to behaviorally observable changes in the perceptual processing of auditory and tactile information. We review the evidence showing that visual deprivation affects the establishment of the spatial coordinate systems involved in the processing of auditory and tactile inputs within the peripersonal space around an individual. In blind individuals, the absence of a conjoint activation of external coordinate systems across modalities co-occurs with a higher capacity to direct auditory and tactile attentional resources to different spatial locations and to ignore irrelevant distractors. Both processes could thus contribute to the reduced spatial multisensory binding that has been observed in those who are blind. The interplay between auditory and tactile information in visually deprived individuals is modulated by attentional factors. Blind individuals typically outperform sighted people in those tasks where the target is presented in one sensory modality (and the other modality acts as a distractor). By contrast, they are less efficient in tasks explicitly requiring the combination of information across sensory modalities. The review highlights how these behavioral effects are subserved by extensive plastic changes at the neural level, with brain areas traditionally involved in visual functioning switching and being recruited for the processing of stimuli within the intact residual senses. We also discuss the roles played by other intervening factors with regard to compensatory mechanisms, such as previous visual experience, age at onset of blindness, and learning effects. Olfactory perception can be modulated by the repeated exposure to odours. Olfactory habituation is a reduced behavioural response to repetitive stimulation. Edibility is considered an important top-down feature that can affect olfactory perception, but whether it could modulate olfactory habituation when food or nonfood odours are repeatedly smelled remains unclear. Indeed, due to their ecological salience, food odours attract attention automatically which might slow down habituation. This registered report aimed to determine whether olfactory habituation shows a different pattern when participants are presented with food or nonfood odours. In a within-subject design, 50 participants were tested under satiated and fasted states in separated experimental sessions. In each session, participants were exposed to the same food and nonfood odour in different blocks of 20 trials each. Participants rated the perceived odour intensity and pleasantness after each trial. We used an intermittent odour presentation to reduce olfactory fatigue while capitalising on the effect of cognitive states on habituation. Linear mixed-effects models showed that the perceived odour intensity decreased over time only for nonfood odours. Conversely, the perceived odour pleasantness decreased significantly more across trials for food odours. These effects were retrieved regardless of the participant's hunger state. Our results are in line with the olfactory-specific satiety theory which posits a specific decrease in the perceived pleasantness of food odours, without changes in the perceived odour intensity. In short, our findings indicate that perceived odour edibility modulates olfactory habituation, extending the previous literature on the impact of top-down factors on olfactory perception. The segrosome is the nucleoprotein complex that mediates accurate plasmid segregation. In addition to its multifunctional role in segrosome assembly, the ParG protein of multiresistance plasmid TP228 is a transcriptional repressor of the parFG partition genes. ParG is a homodimeric DNA binding protein, with C-terminal regions that interlock into a ribbon-helix-helix fold. Antiparallei [beta]-strands in this fold are presumed to insert into the OF operator major groove to exert transcriptional control as established for other ribbon-helix-helix factors. The [O.sub.F] locus comprises eight degenerate tetramer boxes arranged in a combination of direct and inverted orientation. Each tetramer motif likely recruits one ParG dimer, implying that the fully bound operator is cooperatively coated by up to eight dimers. [O.sub.F] was subdivided experimentally into four overlapping 20-bp sites (A to D), each of which comprises two tetramer boxes separated by AT-rich spacers. Extensive interaction studies demonstrated that sites A to D individually are bound with different affinities by ParG (C > A [approximately equal to] B >> D). Moreover, comprehensive scanning mutagenesis revealed the contribution of each position in the site core and flanking sequences to ParG binding. Natural variations in the tetramer box motifs and in the interbox spacers, as well as in flanking sequences, each influence ParG binding. The [O.sub.F] operator apparently has evolved with sites that bind ParG dissimilarly to produce a nucleoprotein complex fine-tuned for optimal interaction with the transcription machinery. The association of other ribbon-helix-helix proteins with complex recognition sites similarly may be modulated by natural sequence variations between subsites.

Microbiological quality of both freshwater and marine water by detecting both culturable and nonculturable enterococci, which are present in water and adherent to the plankton, are discussed. Results show that the PCR assay is a powerful tool for detecting fecal indicators and pathogens in the environment, providing a much more sensitive method than culture.
