Abstract

This paper presents a methodological proposal for phenomenological interviewing, the theme-centred interview, designed to facilitate in-depth exploration of the meanings experienced in relation to a theme. The method is rooted in the phenomenological tradition, but incorporates innovative aspects, including the systematic use of aphorisms, a specific coding system with qualitative criteria that encompasses elements of the researcher's experience, and the use of existential categories to frame results within a phenomenological context. This approach includes a graphical output, the map of meanings, which extend the analysis by providing a visual representation of the structures of meanings in relation to the theme.

Abstract

There has been rapidly growing demand of polymeric materials coming from different aspects of modern life because of the highly diverse physical and chemical properties of polymers. Polymer informatics is an interdisciplinary research field of polymer science, computer science, information science and machine learning that serves as a platform to exploit existing polymer data for efficient design of functional polymers. Despite many potential benefits of employing a data-driven approach to polymer design, there has been notable challenges of the development of polymer informatics attributed to the complex hierarchical structures of polymers, such as the lack of open databases and unified structural representation. In this study, we review and discuss the applications of machine learning on different aspects of the polymer design process through four perspectives: polymer databases, representation (descriptor) of polymers, predictive models for polymer properties, and polymer design strategy. Abstract

The DIII-D tokamak has elucidated crucial physics and developed projectable solutions for ITER and fusion power plants in the key areas of core performance, boundary heat and particle transport, and integrated scenario operation, with closing the core-edge integration knowledge gap being the overarching mission. New experimental validation of high-fidelity, multi-channel, non-linear gyrokinetic turbulent transport models for ITER provides strong confidence it will achieve Q ⩾ 10 operation. Experiments identify options for easing H-mode access in hydrogen, and give new insight into the isotopic dependence of transport and confinement. Analysis of 2,1 islands in unoptimized low-torque IBS demonstration discharges suggests their onset time occurs randomly in the constant β phase, most often triggered by non-linear 3-wave coupling, thus identifying an NTM seeding mechanism to avoid. Pure deuterium SPI for disruption mitigation is shown to provide favorable slow cooling, but poor core assimilation, suggesting paths for improved SPI on ITER. At the boundary, measured neutral density and ionization source fluxes are strongly poloidally asymmetric, implying a 2D treatment is needed to model pedestal fuelling. Detailed measurements of pedestal and SOL quantities and impurity charge state radiation in detached divertors has validated edge fluid modelling and new self-consistent ‘pedestal-to-divertor’ integrated modeling that can be used to optimize reactors. New feedback adaptive ELM control minimizes confinement reduction, and RMP ELM suppression with sustained high core performance was obtained for the first time with the outer strike point in a W-coated, compact and unpumped small-angle slot divertor. Advances have been made in integrated operational scenarios for ITER and power plants. Wide pedestal intrinsically ELM-free QH-modes are produced with more reactor-relevant conditions, Low torque IBS with W-equivalent radiators can exhibit predator-prey oscillations in T _e and radiation which need control. High- β _P scenarios with q _min > 2, q _95 –7.9, β _N > 4, β _T –3.3% and H _98y2 > 1.5 are sustained with high density ( $\bar n$ = 7E19 m ^−3 , f _G –1) for 6 τ _E , improving confidence in steady-state tokamak reactors. Diverted NT plasmas achieve high core performance with a non-ELMing edge, offering a possible highly attractive core-edge integration solution for reactors.

Abstract

Context: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is diagnosed in up to 80% of men during their lifetime. Several novel ultra-minimally invasive surgical treatments (uMISTs) for BPH/benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) have become available over the past 5 yr. Objective: To evaluate the perioperative and functional outcomes of recently introduced uMISTs for BPH/BPO, including Urolift, Rezūm, temporary implantable nitinol device, prostatic artery embolization (PAE), and intraprostatic injection. Evidence acquisition: A systematic literature search was conducted in December 2020 using Medline (via PubMed), Embase (via Ovid), Scopus, and Web of Science (registered on PROSPERO as CRD42021225014). The search strategy used PICO criteria and article selection was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias and the quality of the articles included were assessed. A dedicated data extraction form was used to collect the data of interest. Pooled and cumulative analyses were performed to compare perioperative and functional outcomes between study groups. A random-effects model using the DerSimonian and Laird method was used to evaluate heterogeneity. Stata version 15.0 software was used for all statistical analyses. Evidence synthesis: The initial electronic search identified 3978 papers, of which 48 ultimately met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. Pooled analysis revealed a uMIST benefit in terms of International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS; −9.81 points, 95% confidence interval [CI] −11.37 to −8.25 at 1 mo; −13.13 points, 95% CI −14.98 to −11.64 at 12 mo), maximum flow rate (from +3.66 ml/s, 95% CI 2.8–4.5 to +4.14 ml/s, 95% CI 0.72–7.56 at 12 mo), and postvoid residual volume (−10.10 ml, 95% CI −27.90 to 7.71 at 12 mo). No negative impact was observed on scores for the International Index of Erectile Function-5, Male Sexual Health Questionnaire-Ejaculatory Dysfunction bother and function scales (overall postintervention change in pooled median score of 1.88, 95% CI 1.34–2.42 at the start of follow-up; and 1.04, 95% CI 0.28–1.8 after 1 yr), or the IPSS-Quality of Life questionnaire. Conclusions: Novel uMISTs can yield fast and effective relief of LUTS without affecting patient quality of life. Only Rezūm, UroLift, and PAE had a minimal impact on patients’ sexual function with respect to baseline, especially regarding preservation of ejaculation. Patient summary: We reviewed outcomes for recently introduced ultra-minimally invasive surgical treatments for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostate enlargement or obstruction. The evidence suggests that these novel techniques are beneficial in terms of controlling symptoms while preserving sexual function. Take Home Message: Novel ultra-minimally invasive treatments can yield fast and effective relief of lower urinary tract symptoms without affecting a patient’s quality of life.

Abstract

La intención de aplicar la metodología Aprendizaje-servicio (ApS), en un programa formativo que focaliza en la regeneración urbana dentro de la asignatura “Intensificación en Urbanismo” del Grado en Fundamentos de la Arquitectura de la ETSAM durante el curso 2023-24 (semestre de otoño), construye sobre la experiencia desarrollada en los cursos anteriores en el marco del ApS-UPM “Aula de Resiliencia Urbana” (De Gregorio Hurtado, 2020) y se sitúa dentro del ApS-UPM “Repensar los Barrios de Madrid” concedido en el último trimestre de 2023. Toda esta experiencia se basa en el potencial que esta metodología de educación experiencial ofrece en el marco de las asignaturas de urbanismo, y en particular de aquellas que tienen un enfoque más aplicado. Desde ese posicionamiento, nos interesaba como docentes trabajar el entendimiento y acercamiento del alumnado a la dimensión social de nuestra disciplina en la regeneración urbana. Entendemos que desde nuestra docencia tenemos mucho que hacer en ese ámbito. Algo con lo que estamos comprometidas. Esto es porque a través de nuestro trabajo verificamos que existe cada vez una mayor distancia entre el urbanismo y la sociedad a la que sirve e intenta dar respuestas. Tenemos el convencimiento de que como docentes tenemos que contribuir desde la Universidad a revertir esta tendencia y de que el alumnado de nuestras asignaturas puede ser un actor de cambio en relación a esa cuestión desde el proceso de aprendizaje que lleva a cabo en el aula. La regeneración urbana ofrece un campo muy fértil y lleno de posibilidades a este respecto, por ser un ámbito de acción genuinamente enfocado a mejorar la calidad de vida de los habitantes de los barrios desfavorecidos.
