Many challenges emerge in the life cycle of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels throughout the processes of their deployment and use in residential, commercial, industrial and transportation sectors. There is a growing need for total product recovery by recycling and reusing the solar panel base and other components in a way that is economically efficient and environmentally sound. This study highlights the urgency to develop and implement a suitable system for the collection and management of photovoltaic systems at their end-of-life cycle and the need for professional implementation of circular strategies in the solar PV value chain. To achieve this goal, a systematic literature review of 81 peer-reviewed articles, published in English between 2013 and 2023, was conducted. The main purpose of the analysis is to examine the value chain of the solar panels covering the period of design, construction, use, end of life, recovery or landfill. The two processes that are investigated include the extent of end-of-life management of PV panels and the extent of circular strategies to reach a sustainable and comprehensive business model. It is argued that the current obstacles faced by solar energy businesses create new opportunities and challenges for innovation within a circular PV industry, and appropriate policies and trained professionals are needed for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG12, in the solar PV value chain. Globally, we produced 489 million tonnes of plastic in 2023 and we recycled only 8.17%. This study navigates the landscape of recycling practices, highlighting the imperative to reevaluate and upgrade industry-standard protocols. The central focus of this study is on integrating more robust traceability criteria and advanced quality testing methodologies to improve recycled plastics with intrinsic value, particularly in anticipation of future market applications. The investigation examines the prevailing industry standard traceability and quality framework. It then assesses the applicability of those standards using technical datasheets for recycled high-density polyethylene resin grades. This study proposes a paradigm shift toward a more sophisticated analytical approach. This comprehensive framework aims to transcend traditional quality and traceability evaluation. This paper employs a mixed methodological approach, including a thematic analysis of relevant industry standard regulations and an in-depth literature review, to address the need for an operational framework for recycling quality. This study highlights that recycling quality depends on technical attributes determining functionality and application suitability. While some properties are measured, the conventional framework does not address the degradation level of recycled plastic. This study concludes with broader considerations, emphasising the need for a traceability model to disclose material history and composition. This study advocates an industry-wide upgrade in recycling standards, prioritising traceability and quality testing. The proposed enhancements in testing grids and the improved understanding of recycling quality collectively contribute to a holistic framework, unlocking the intrinsic value of recycled plastics for future market applications. Recycled product certification (RPC) schemes may prove useful to ensure the desired quality and gain buyer confidence in purchasing products with recycled content (PwRC). RPCs are relatively new to the sector and have not been widely adopted. Hence, this study aims to investigate the implementation of RPC in construction projects using a multiple‐case study approach. The analysis reveals that a large proportion of respondents were unaware of these schemes. The study finds that while a majority favoured RPC application, there were significant variations in responses among stakeholder groups. Moreover, the study identifies six advantages and seven significant barriers associated with the use of RPC in the sector. This study recommends leveraging education and supportive regulation for the effective implementation of RPC. In particular, the policymakers who intend to embed RPC in procurement policies for purchasing PwRC can learn about the identified loopholes and strategies and address them accordingly.
