Search

We show that a spectral wall, i.e., an obstacle in the dynamics of a bosonic soliton, which arises due to the transition of a normal mode into the continuum spectrum, exists after coupling the original bosonic model to fermions. This spectral wall can be experienced if the boson or fermion field is in an excited state. Furthermore, while passing through a spectral wall, an incoming kink-fermion bound state can be separated into purely bosonic kink, which continues to move to spatial infinity and a fermionic cloud that spreads in the region before the wall.

We show that spectral walls are common phenomena in the dynamics of kinks in (1+1) dimensions. They occur in models based on two or more scalar fields with a nonempty Bogomol'nyi-Prasam-Sommerfield (BPS) sector, hosting two zero modes, where they are one of the main factors governing the soliton dynamics. We also show that spectral walls appear as singularities of the dynamical vibrational moduli space., Comment: improved, references added

We study various aspects of the scattering of generalized compact oscillons in the signum-Gordon model in (1+1) dimensions. Using covariance of the model we construct traveling oscillons and study their interactions and the dependence of these interactions on the oscillons initial velocities and their relative phases. The scattering processes transform the two incoming oscillons into two outgoing ones and lead to the generation of extra oscillons which appear in the form of jet-like cascades. Such cascades vanish for some values of free parameters and the scattering processes, even though our model is non-integrable, resemble typical scattering processes normally observed for integrable or quase-integrable models. Occasionally, in the intermediate stage of the process, we have seen the emission of shock waves and we have noticed that, in general, outgoing oscillons have been more involved in their emission than the initial ones i.e. they have a border in form of curved world-lines. The results of our studies of the scattering of oscillons suggest that the radiation of the signum-Gordon model has a fractal-like nature., Comment: 47 pages, 38 figures

We look at BPS systems involving two interacting Sine-Gordon like fields both when one of them has a kink solution and the second one either a kink or an antikink solution. The interaction between the two fields is controlled by a parameter $\lambda$ which has to satisfy $| \lambda|< 2$. We then take these solitonic static solutions (with solitons well localised) and construct from them systems involving two solitons in each field (kinks and antikinks) and then use them as initial conditions for their evolution in Lorentz covariant versions of such models. This way we study their interactions and compare them with similar interactions involving only one Sine-Gordon field. In particular, we look at the behaviour of two static kinks in each field (which for one field repel each other) and of a system involving kinks and anti-kinks (which for one field attract each other) and look how their behaviour depends on the strength of the interaction $\lambda$ between the two fields. Our simulations have led us to look again at the static BPS solutions of systems involving more fields. We have found that such ostensibly 'static' BPS solutions can exhibit small motions due to the excitation of their zero modes. These excitations arise from small unavoidable numerical errors (the overall translation is cancelled by the conservation of momentum) but as systems of two or more fields have more that one zero mode such motions can be generated and are extremely small. We look at simple BPS systems involving more than one field. We discuss the conditions that have to be imposed on various terms in Lagrangians involving many fields to produce BPS systems and then look in more detail at the simplest of such cases. We analyse in detail BPS systems involving 2 interacting Sine-Gordon like fields, both when one of them has a kink solution and the second one either a kink or an antikink solution. We take their solitonic static solutions and use them as initial conditions for their evolution in Lorentz covariant versions of such models. We send these structures towards themselves and find that when they interact weakly they can pass through each other with a phase shift which is related to the strength of their interaction. When they interact strongly they repel and reflect on each other. We use the method of a modified gradient flow in order to visualize the solutions in the space of fields., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures

We study various properties of a perturbed signum-Gordon model, which has been obtained through the dimensional reduction of the called `first BPS submodel of the Skyrme model'. This study is motivated by the observation that the first BPS submodel of the Skyrme model may be partially responsible for the good qualities of the rational map ansatz approximation to the solutions of the Skyrme model. We study the gauge invariance of the supersymmetric grassmannian sigma model $G(M,N)$. It is richer then its purely bosonic submodel and we show how to use it in order to reduce some constant curvature holomorphic solutions of the model into simpler expressions., Comment: 8 pages, no figures

We investigate the quasi-integrability properties of various deformations of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, depending on two parameters $\varepsilon_1$ and $\varepsilon_2$, which include among them the regularized long-wave (RLW) and modified regularized long-wave (mRLW) equations. We show, using analytical and numerical methods, that the charges, constructed from a deformation of the zero curvature equation for the KdV equation, are asymptotically conserved for various values of the deformation parameters. By that we mean that, despite the fact that the charges do vary in time during the scattering of solitons, they return after the scattering to the same values they had before it. That property was tested numerically for the scattering of two and three solitons, and analytically for the scattering of two solitons in the mRLW theory ($\varepsilon_2=\varepsilon_1=1$). We also show that the Hirota method leads to analytical one-soliton solutions of our deformed equation for $\varepsilon_1 = 1$, and any value of $\varepsilon_2$. We also mention some properties of soliton-radiation interactions seen in some of our simulations.

We present a general relativistic version of the self-gravitating fluid model for the dark sector of the Universe (darkon fluid) introduced in Phys. Rev. 80 (2009) 083513 and extended and reviewed in Entropy (2013) 559. This model contains no free parameters in its Lagrangian. The resulting energy-momentum tensor is dustlike with a nontrivial energy-flow. In an approximation valid at sub-Hubble scales we find that the cosmic acceleration is not attributed to any kind of negative pressure but it is due to a dynamically determined sign change of the energy density. This property turns out to be equivalent to a time-dependent, sign changing curvature. The cosmological equations obtained agree with those of the nonrelativistic model but they are given a new physical interpretation. Furthermore we have derived the self-consistent equation to be satisfied by the nonrelativistic gravitational potential produced by a galactic halo in our model from a weak field limit of a generalized Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation., Comment: 28 pages to appear in EPJC

We study the baby Skyrme model as a theory that interpolates between two distinct BPS systems. For this a near-BPS approximation can be used which, however, involves a small deviation from each of the two BPS limits. We provide analytical explanation and numerical support for the validity of this approximation. We then study the set of all possible supersymmetric extensions of the baby Skyrme model with ${\cal N}=1$ and the particular ones with extended ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetries and relate this to the above mentioned almost-BPS approximation., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, v2: explanations added

We look at solutions (both BPS and non-BPS) of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model on $\mathbb{R} \times S^1$ (with twisted boundary conditions), in particular by using a conformal mapping technique, and we show how to interpret these solutions by decomposing them into expressions describing constituent solitons. We point out the problems that may arise (for non-BPS solutions) when one naively looks at the clustering properties of these solutions. We present a collective coordinate approximation to model the dynamics of two interacting nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) solitons. We discuss the accuracy of this approximation by comparing our results to those of the full numerical simulations and find that it is remarkably accurate not only when the solitons are some distance apart but also during their interaction.

If a scalar field theory in (1+1) dimensions possesses soliton solutions obeying first order BPS equations, then, in general, it is possible to find an infinite number of related field theories with BPS solitons which obey closely related BPS equations. We point out that this fact may be understood as a simple consequence of an appropriately generalised notion of self-duality. We show that this self-duality framework enables us to generalize to higher dimensions the construction of new solitons from already known solutions. By performing simple field transformations our procedure allows us to relate solitons with different topological properties. We summarize the present state of research on the darkon fuid as a model for the dark sector of the Universe. Nonrelativistic massless particles are introduced as a realization of the Galilei group in an enlarged phase space. The additional degrees of freedom allow for a nonstandard, minimal coupling to gravity respecting Einstein's equivalence principle. Extended to a self-gravitating fluid the Poisson equation for the gravitational potential contains a dynamically generated effective gravitational mass density of either sign. The equations of motion (EOMs) contain no free parameters and are invariant w.r.t. Milne gauge transformations. Fixing the gauge eliminates the unphysical degrees of freedom. The resulting Lagrangian possesses no free particle limit. The particles it describes, darkons, exist only as fluid particles of a self-gravitating fluid. This darkon fluid realizes the zero-mass Galilean algebra extended by dilations with dynamical exponent z = 5/3. We reduce the EOMs to Friedmann-like equations, derive conserved quantities and a unique Hamiltonian dynamics by implementing dilation symmetry. By the Casimir of the Poisson-bracket (PB)-algebra we foliate the phase space and construct a Lagrangian in reduced phase space. We solve the Friedmann-like equations with the transition redshift and the value of the Casimir as integration constants. We obtain a deceleration phase for the early Universe and an acceleration phase for the late Universe in agreement with observations. Steady state equations in the spherically symmetric case may model a galactic halo. Numerical solutions of a nonlinear differential equation for the gravitational potential lead to predictions for the dark matter (DM) part of the rotation curves (RCs) of galaxies in qualitative agreement with observational data. We also present a general covariant generalization of the model.

The BPS baby Skyrme models are submodels of baby Skyrme models, where the nonlinear sigma model term is suppressed. They have skyrmion solutions saturating a BPS bound, and the corresponding static energy functional is invariant under area-preserving diffeomorphisms (APDs). Here we show that the solitons in the BPS baby Skyrme model, which carry a nontrivial topological charge $Q_{b} \in \pi_2(S^2)$ (a winding number), are dual to vortices in a BPS vortex model with a topological charge $Q_{v}\in \pi_1(S^1)$ (a vortex number), in the sense that there is a map between the BPS solutions of the two models. The corresponding energy densities of the BPS solutions of the two models are identical. A further consequence of the duality is that the dual BPS vortex models inherit the BPS property and the infinitely many symmetries (APDs) of the BPS baby Skyrme models. We show that polarons can sustain loop-like configurations in flexible bio-polymers and that the size of the loops depend on both the flexural rigidity of the polymer and the electron-phonon coupling constant. In particular we show that for single stranded DNA (ssDNA) such loops can have as little as 10 base pairs. For polyacetylene the shortest loop must have at least 12 nodes. We also show that these configurations are very stable under thermal fluctuations and can facilitate the formation of hairpin-loops of ssDNA., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, and 1 table

We look at properties of vortex solutions of the extended CP^N Skyrme-Faddeev model. We show that only holomorphic solutions of the CP^N model are also solutions of the Skyrme-Faddeev model. As the total energy of these solutions is infinite these solutions should be interpreted as describing time dependent vortices. We describe their dynamics and, in partcular, point out that one of the terms in the energy density is related to the Noether charge of the model., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

We construct new classes of vortex-like solutions of the CP^N model in (3+1) dimensions and discuss some of their properties. These solutions are obtained by generalizing to (3+1) dimensions the techniques well established for the two dimensional CP^N models. We show that as the total energy of these solutions is infinite, they describe evolving vortices and anti-vortices with the energy density of some configurations varying in time. Polarons, introduced by Davydov to explain energy transport in $\alpha$-helices, correspond to electrons localised on a few lattice sites because of their interaction with phonons. While the static polaron field configurations have been extensively studied, their displacement is more difficult to explain. In this paper we show that, when the next to nearest neighbour interactions are included, for physical values of the parameters, polarons can spontaneously move, at T=0, on bent chains that exhibit a positive gradient in their curvature. At room temperature polarons perform a random walk but a curvature gradient can induce a non-zero average speed similar to the one observed at zero temperature. We also show that at zero temperature a polaron bounces on sharply kinked junctions. We interpret these results in light of the energy transport by transmembrane proteins., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We present a class of solutions of the CPN model in (3+1) dimensions. We suggest that they represent vortex-like configurations. We also discuss some of their properties. We show that some configurations of vortices have a divergent energy per unit length while for the others such an energy has a minimum for a very special orientation of vortices. The fluid model for the dark sector of the universe (darkon fluid) introduced previously in \cite{PRD} is reformulated as a modified model involving only variables from physical phase space. The Lagrangian of the model does not possess a free particle limit and hence the particles it describes, darkons, exist only as a self-gravitating fluid. This darkon fluid presents a dynamical realisation of the zero-mass Galilean algebra extended by anisotropic dilational symmetry with dynamical exponent $z=5/3$. The model possesses cosmologically relevant solutions which are identical to those of \cite{PRD}. We derive also the equations for the cosmological perturbations at early times and determine their solutions. We discuss the construction of higher-dimensional surfaces based on the harmonic maps of $S^2$ into $CP^{N-1}$ and other grassmannians. We show that there are two ways of implementing this procedure - both based on the use of the relevant projectors. We study various properties of such projectors and show that the Gaussian curvature of these surfaces, in general, is not constant. We look in detail at the surfaces corresponding to the Veronese sequence of such maps and show that for all of them this curvature is constant but its value depends on which mapping is used in the construction of the surface.

This current work is an extension to work previously done by the authors. The dynamics of a baby skyrmion configuration, in a model Landau-Lifshitz equation, was studied in the presence of various potential obstructions. The baby skyrmion configuration was constructed from two Q=1 hedgehog solutions to the new baby Skyrme model in $(2+1)$ dimensions. The potential obstructions were created by introducing a new term into the Lagrangian which resulted in a localised inhomogeneity in the potential term's coefficient. In the barrier system the normal circular path was deformed as the skyrmions traversed the barrier, after which the skyrmions orbited the boundary of the system. For critical values of the barrier height and width the skyrmions were no longer bound although the unbound behaviour is not clearly distinct from the bound. In the case of a potential hole the dynamics of baby skyrmions is dependent upon the binding energy of the system. Depending upon its value, the skyrmions' behaviour varies. The angular momentum must be modified to ensure overall conservation. We show that there exists a link between the oscillation in the skyrmion's energy density and the periods of non-conservation of the angular momentum in Landau-Lifshitz models., Comment: 40 pages, 15 figures

To describe dark energy we introduce a fluid model with no free parameter on the microscopic level. The constituents of this fluid are massless particles which are a dynamical realisation of the unextended $D=(3+1)$ Galilei algebra. These particles are exotic as they live in an enlarged phase space. Their only interaction is with gravity. A minimal coupling to the gravitational field, satisfying Einstein's equivalence principle, leads to a dynamically active gravitational mass density of either sign. A two-component model containing matter (baryonic and dark) and dark energy leads, through the cosmological principle, to Friedmann-like equations. Their solutions show a deceleration phase for the early universe and an acceleration phase for the late universe. We predict the Hubble parameter $H(z)/H_0$ and the deceleration parameter $q(z)$ and compare them with available experimental data. We also discuss a reduced model (one component dark sector) and the inclusion of radiation. Our model shows no stationary modification of Newton's gravitational potential.

The dynamics of a baby skyrmion configuration, in a model Landau-Lifshitz equation, was studied in the presence of various potential obstructions. We show that the dynamical realization of the acceleration-enlarged Galilean symmetry leads to nonrelativistic massless particles whose energy may be negative. We present a fluid mechanical generalisation of this observation and use it to contruct a nonrelativistic two-dimensional fluid model which possesses solutions with a negative energy density. Considering this model as describing dark energy in a baby universe (two space dimensions) we show that its negative energy density leads to a repulsive gravitational interaction of the fluid with any test body.

We study some properties of the deformed Sine Gordon models. These models, presented by Bazeia et al, are natural generalisations of the Sine Gordon models in (1+1) dimensions. There are two classes of them, each dependent on a parameter n. For special values of this parameter the models reduce to the Sine Gordon one; for other values of n they can be considered as generalisations of this model. The models are topological and possess one kink solutions. Here we investigate the existence of other solutions of these models - such as breathers. The work is numerical and we find that the breathers, as such, probably do not exist. However, we show that some of these models, namely, the n = 1 of the first class possess breather-like solutions which are quasi-stable; ie these quasi-breathers exist for long periods of time (thousands of periods of oscillations). These results are found to be independent of the discretisation used in the numerical part of our work.

We analyse the scattering of sine-Gordon breathers on a square potential well. We show that the scattering process depends not only on the vibration frequency of the breather and its incoming speed but also on its phase as well as the depth and width of the well. We show that the breather can pass through the well and exit with a speed different, sometime larger, from the initial one. It can also be trapped and very slowly decay inside the well or bounce out of the well and go back to where it came from. We also show that the breather can split into a kink and an anti-kink pair when it hits the well., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures

By considering the nonrelativistic limit of de-Sitter geometry one obtains the nonrelativistic space-time with a cosmological constant and Newton-Hooke (NH) symmetries. We show that the NH symmetry algebra can be enlarged by the addition of the constant acceleration generators and endowed with central extensions (one in any dimension (D) and three in D=(2+1)). We present a classical Lagrangian and Hamiltonian framework for constructing models quasi-invariant under enlarged NH symmetries which depend on three parameters described by three nonvanishing central charges. The Hamiltonian dynamics then splits into external and internal sectors with new non-commutative structures of external and internal phase spaces. We show that in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant the system reduces to the one presented in [1] which possesses accelaration-enlarged Galilean symmetries., Comment: 13 pages; small changes like a couple of footnotes etc

We add to Galilean symmetries the transformations describing constant accelerations. The corresponding extended Galilean algebra allows, in any dimension $D=d+1$, the introduction of one central charge $c$ while in $D=2+1$ we can have three such charges: c, \theta and \theta'. We present nonrelativistic classical mechanics models, with higher order time derivatives and show that they give dynamical realizations of our algebras. The presence of central charge $c$ requires the acceleration square Lagrangian term. We study the scattering properties of Sine Gordon kinks on obstructions in the form of finite size potential `wells'. We model this by making the coefficient of the $\cos(\phi)-1$ term in the Lagrangian position dependent. We show that when the kinks find themselves in the well they radiate and then interact with this radiation. As a result of this energy loss the kinks become trapped for small velocities while at higher velocities they are transmitted with a loss of energy. However, the interaction with the radiation can produce `unexpected' reflections by the well. We present two simple models which capture the gross features of this behaviour. We show that many surfaces in $\R^{N^2-1}$ can be generated by harmonic maps of $S^2\to CP^{N-1}$. These surfaces are based on the projectors in $CP^{N-1}$ which describe maps of $S^2\to CP^{N-1}$. We analyse the scattering of a two-dimensional soliton on a potential well. We show that this soliton can pass through the well, bounce back or become trapped and we study the dependence of the critical velocity on the width and the depth of the well. We also present a model based on a pseudo-geodesic approximation to the full system which shows that the vibrational modes of the soliton play a crucial role in the dynamical properties of its interactions with potential wells., Comment: 21 pages, 27 figures

We describe surfaces in R^{N^2-1} generated by the holomorphic solutions of the supersymmetric CP^{N-1} model. We show that these surfaces are described by the fundamental projector constructed out of the solutions of this model and that in the CP^{N-1} case the corresponding surface is a sphere. Although the coordinates of the sphere are superfields the sphere's curvature is constant. We show that for N>2 the corresponding surfaces can also be constructed from the similar projector.

We describe the general class of $N$-extended $D=(2+1)$ Galilean supersymmetries obtained, respectively, from the $N$-extended D=3 Poincar\'{e} superalgebras with maximal sets of central charges. We confirm the consistency of supersymmetry with the presence of the `exotic' second central charge $\theta$. The six-dimensional exotic Galilean algebra in (2+1) dimensions with two central charges $m$ and $\theta$, is extended when $m=0$, to a ten-dimensional Galilean conformal algebra with dilatation, expansion, two acceleration generators and the central charge $\theta$. A realisation of such a symmetry is provided by a model with higher derivatives recently discussed in \cite{peterwojtek}. We consider also a realisation of the Galilean conformal symmetry for the motion with a Coulomb potential and a magnetic vortex interaction. Finally, we study the restriction, as well as the modification, of the Galilean conformal algebra obtained after the introduction of the minimally coupled constant electric and magnetic fields., Comment: LaTeX 11 pages

We study here polaron (soliton) states of electrons or holes in a model describing carbon-type nanotubes. In the Hamiltonian of the system we take into account the electron-phonon interaction that arises from the deformation dependencies of both the on-site and the hopping interaction energies. Using an adiabatic approximation, we derive the equations for self-trapped electron states in zigzag nanotubes. We find the ground states of an electron in such a system and show that the polaron states can have different symmetries depending on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling. Namely, at relatively weak coupling the polarons possess quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) properties and have an azimuthal symmetry. When the coupling constant exceeds some critical value, the azimuthal symmetry breaks down and the polaron spreads out in more than one dimension. We also study polarons that are formed by the electrons in the conducting band (or by holes in the valence band) in semiconducting carbon nanotubes. We show that their properties are more complex than those of quasi-1D ground state polarons. In particular, polarons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes possess an inner structure: being self-trapped along the nanotube axis they exhibit some modulations around the nanotube., Comment: 27 pages 1 figure

We study numerically self-trapped (polaron) states of quasiparticles (electrons, holes or excitons) in a deformable nanotube formed by a hexagonal lattice, wrapped into a cylinder (carbon- and boron nitride-type nanotube structures). We present a Hamiltonian for such a system taking into account an electron-phonon interaction, and determine conditions under which the lowest energy states are polarons.We compute a large class of numerical solutions of this model for a wide range of the parameters. We show that at not too strong electron-phonon coupling, the system admits ring-like localized solutions wrapped around the nanotube (the charge carrier is localized along the nanotube axis and uniformly distributed with respect to the azimuthal coordinate). At stronger coupling, solutions are localized on very few lattice sites in both directions of the nanotube. The transition from one type solution to the other one depends on the diameter of the nanotube. We show that for the values of the carbon nanotube parameters, the polarons have a ring-like structure wrapped around the nanotube with a profile resembling that of the nonlinear Schrodinger soliton., Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures

We study the scattering properties of topological solitons on obstructions in the form of holes and barriers. We use the 'new baby Skyrme' model in (2+1) dimensions and we model the obstructions by making the coefficient of the baby skyrme model potential - position dependent. We find that that the barrier leads to the repulsion of the solitons (for low velocities) or their complete transmission (at higher velocities) with the process being essentially elastic. The hole case is different; for small velocities the solitons are trapped while at higher velocities they are transmitted with a loss of energy. A simple phenomenological model for describing the conformational dynamics of biological macromolecules via the nonlinearity-induced instabilities is proposed. It is shown that the interaction between charges and bending degrees of freedom of closed molecular aggregates may act as drivers giving impetus to conformational dynamics of biopolymers. It is demonstrated that initially circular aggregates may undergo transformation to polygonal shapes and possible application to aggregates of bacteriochlorophyl a molecules is considered., Comment: REVTeX, 19 pages, 9 figures

We consider various forms of the mass term that can be used in the Skyrme model and their implications on the properties of baryonic states. We show that, with an appropriate choice for the mass term, without changing the asymptotic behaviour of the profile functions at large $r$, we can considerably reduce or increase the mass term's contribution to the classical mass of the solitons. We find that multibaryon configurations can be classically bound at large baryon numbers for some choices of this mass term., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables

We study some geometrical aspects of two dimensional orientable surfaces arrising from the study of CP^N sigma models. To this aim we employ an identification of R^(N(N+2)) with the Lie algebra su(N+1) by means of which we construct a generalized Weierstrass formula for immersion of such surfaces. The structural elements of the surface like its moving frame, the Gauss-Weingarten and the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are expressed in terms of the solution of the CP^N model defining it. Further, the first and second fundamental forms, the Gaussian curvature, the mean curvature vector, the Willmore functional and the topological charge of surfaces are expressed in terms of this solution. A model describing the dynamics of crystal exciton states on a hexagonal lattice has been studied. The hamiltonian includes terms describing the movement of the exciton throughout the crystal. Here we generalize the hamiltonian by including first order couplings of such terms to the lattice phonon fields. A discussion of the ground state configuration of the exciton field as a function of the system couplings is given. We describe a N=2 supersymmetric extension of the nonrelativistic (2+1)-dimensional model describing particles on the noncommutative plane with scalar (electric) and vector (magnetic) interactions. First, we employ the N=2 superfield technique and show that in the presence of a scalar N=2 superpotential the magnetic interaction is implied by the presence of noncommutativity of position variables. Further, by expressing the supersymmetric Hamiltonian as a bilinear in N=2 supercharges we obtain two supersymmetric models with electromagnetic interactions and two different noncanonical symplectic structures describing noncommutativity. We investigate some aspects of the soliton dynamics in an alpha-helical protein macromolecule within the steric Davydov-Scott model. Our main objective is to elucidate the important role of the helical symmetry in the formation, stability and dynamical properties of Davydov's solitons in an alpha-helix. We show, analytically and numerically, that the corresponding system of nonlinear equations admits several types of stationary soliton solutions and that solitons which preserve helical symmetry are dynamically unstable: once formed, they decay rapidly when they propagate. On the other hand, the soliton which spontaneously breaks the local translational and helical symmetries possess the lowest energy and is a robust localized entity. We also demonstrate that this soliton is the result of an hybridization of the quasiparticle states from the two lowest degenerate bands and has an inner structure which can be described as a modulated multi-hump amplitude distribution of excitations on individual spines. The complex and composite structure of the soliton manifests itself distinctly when the soliton is moving and some interspine oscillations take place. Such a soliton structure and the interspine oscillations have previosly been observed numerically in [A.C. Scott, Phys.Rev. A 26 578 (1982)]. Here we argue that the solitons studied by A. Scott, are hybrid solitons and that the oscillations arise due to the helical symmetry of the system and result from the motion of the soliton along the $\alpha$-helix. The frequency of the interspine oscillations is shown to be proportional to the soliton velocity., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures

In this paper the SU(N) Einstein-Skyrme system is considered. We express the chiral field (which is not a simple embedding of the SU(2) one) in terms of harmonic maps. In this way, SU(N) spherical symmetric equations can be obtained easily for any $N$ and the gravitating skyrmion solutions of these equations can be studied. In particular, the SU(3) case is considered in detail and three different types of gravitating skyrmions with topological charge 4, 2 and 0, respectively, are constructed numerically. An extension of the classic Enneper-Weierstrass representation for conformally parametrised surfaces in multi-dimensional spaces is presented. This is based on low dimensional CP^1 and CP^2 sigma models which allow the study of the constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces immersed into Euclidean 3- and 8-dimensional spaces, respectively. Relations of Weierstrass type systems to the equations of these sigma models are established. In particular, it is demonstrated that the generalised Weierstrass representation can admit different CMC-surfaces in R^3 which have globally the same Gauss map. A new procedure for constructing CMC-surfaces in R^n is presented and illustrated in some explicit examples., Comment: arxiv version is already official

We consider the Lagrangian particle model introduced in [hep-th/9612017] for zero mass but nonvanishing second central charge of the planar Galilei group. Extended by a magnetic vortex or a Coulomb potential the model exibits conformal symmetry. In the former case we observe an additional SO(2,1) hidden symmetry. By either a canonical transformation with constraints or by freezing scale and special conformal transformations at $t=0$ we reduce the six-dimensional phase-space to the physically required four dimensions. Then we discuss bound states (bounded solutions) in quantum dynamics (classical mechanics). We show that the Schr\"odinger equation for the pure vortex case may be transformed into the Morse potential problem thus providing us with an explanation of the hidden SO(2,1) symmetry., Comment: 24 pages
