Recent theoretical work and targeted observational studies suggest that filaments are sites of galaxy preprocessing. The aim of the WISESize project is to directly probe galaxies over the full range of environments to quantify and characterize extrinsic galaxy quenching in the local Universe. In this paper, we use GALFIT to measure the infrared 12$\mu$m ($R_{12}$) and 3.4$\mu$m ($R_{3.4}$) effective radii of 603 late-type galaxies in and surrounding the Virgo cluster. We find that Virgo cluster galaxies show smaller star-forming disks relative to their field counterparts at the $2.5\sigma$ level, while filament galaxies show smaller star-forming disks to almost $1.5\sigma$. Our data, therefore, show that cluster galaxies experience significant effects on their star-forming disks prior to their final quenching period. There is also tentative support for the hypothesis that galaxies are preprocessed in filamentary regions surrounding clusters. On the other hand, galaxies belonging to rich groups and poor groups do not differ significantly from those in the field. We additionally find hints of a positive correlation between stellar mass and size ratio for both rich group and filament galaxies, though the uncertainties on these data are consistent with no correlation. We compare our size measurements with the predictions from two variants of a state-of-the-art semi-analytic model (SAM), one which includes starvation and the other incorporating both starvation and ram-pressure stripping (RPS). Our data appear to disfavor the SAM, which includes RPS for the rich group, filament, and cluster samples, which contributes to improved constraints for general models of galaxy quenching., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. Pleasure and pain play an important role in human decision making by providing a common currency for resolving motivational conflicts. While Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate detailed descriptions of pleasure and pain experiences, it is an open question whether LLMs can recreate the motivational force of pleasure and pain in choice scenarios - a question which may bear on debates about LLM sentience, understood as the capacity for valenced experiential states. We probed this question using a simple game in which the stated goal is to maximise points, but where either the points-maximising option is said to incur a pain penalty or a non-points-maximising option is said to incur a pleasure reward, providing incentives to deviate from points-maximising behaviour. Varying the intensity of the pain penalties and pleasure rewards, we found that Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Command R+, GPT-4o, and GPT-4o mini each demonstrated at least one trade-off in which the majority of responses switched from points-maximisation to pain-minimisation or pleasure-maximisation after a critical threshold of stipulated pain or pleasure intensity is reached. LLaMa 3.1-405b demonstrated some graded sensitivity to stipulated pleasure rewards and pain penalties. Gemini 1.5 Pro and PaLM 2 prioritised pain-avoidance over points-maximisation regardless of intensity, while tending to prioritise points over pleasure regardless of intensity. We discuss the implications of these findings for debates about the possibility of LLM sentience.

Internal dynamics and kinematics of galaxies have imprints on the line-of-sight velocity distribution~(LOSVD). Gauss-Hermite parametrisation allows one to identify the kinematics features of the system in terms of skewness~($h_3$) and broadness~($h_4$) deviations of a LOSVD. Such a method provides information about the type of orbits since a $h_3-\overline V$ correlation is a sign of elongated orbits, and the anti-correlation is a sign of circular or near-circular orbits. In previous works, analysis of the $h_3-\overline V$ relation provided a tool to identify a hidden bar or B/PS bulge~(edge-on, $\mathrm{PA}=90^\circ$) and to probe their strength. We prepared two $N$-body galaxy models with clear B/PS bulges: one has an ordinary bar~(the X model), and the second one has a barlens embedded into a bar~(the BL model) to investigate the mechanism of formation of $h_3$ features at any position of an observer. We show that the $h_3-\overline V$ correlation appears in the regions where bar and disc particles are mixing. We also reveal that the model with a barlens has an $h_3-\overline V$ anti-correlation in the centre, and we show that barlens-specific orbits are responsible for this signal. Moreover, this feature can be observed only for galaxies with compact bulges and barlenses. We draw attention to the bright galaxies that do not show a bar in their structure but have a flocculent spiral structure. Using the THINGS' and HERACLES' kinematic data for four barless galaxies (NGC~2841, NGC~3512, NGC~5055, NGC~7331) we built their mass models including dark halos. We concluded that the fraction of the dark matter does not exceed 50\% within the optical radii of the galaxies. This is too little to explain the lack of a bar in these galaxies. In an attempt to understand the featureless structure of these galaxies we constructed several $N$-body models with an initially reduced content of dark matter. We concluded that, in addition to the low mass of the dark halo, the decisive factor that leads to a barless disc is the start from an initially unstable state. An isolated dynamically cold disc (with the Toomre parameter $Q < 0.5$) settled into rotational equilibrium passes trough the short stage of violent instability with fragmentation and formation of stellar clumps. After that, it evolves passively and ends up with a featureless structure. We assume that the barless flocculent galaxies studied in the present work may be descendants of galaxies at high redshifts with rotation curves which are consistent with the high mass fraction of baryons relative to the total dark matter halo., Comment: 18 pages

Filaments are elongated structures that connect groups and clusters of galaxies and are visually the striking feature in cosmological maps. In the literature, typically filaments are defined only using galaxies, assuming that these are good tracers of the dark matter distribution, despite the fact that galaxies are a biased indicator. Here we apply the topological filament extractor DisPerSE to the predictions of the semi-analytic code GAEA to investigate the correspondence between the properties of $z=0$ filaments extracted using the distribution of dark matter and the distribution of model galaxies evolving within the same large-scale structure. We focus on filaments around massive clusters with a mass comparable to Virgo and Coma, with the intent of investigating the influence of massive systems and their feeding filamentary structure on the physical properties of galaxies. We apply different methods to compare the properties of filaments based on the different tracers and study how the sample selection impacts the extraction. Overall, filaments extracted using different tracers agree, although they never coincide totally. We also find that the number of filaments ending up in the massive clusters identified using galaxies distribution is typically underestimated with respect to the corresponding dark matter filament extraction., Comment: resubmitted to MNRAS after minor comments

We present the biggest up-to-date sample of edge-on galaxies with B/PS bulges and X-structures. The sample was prepared using images from the DESI Legacy catalogue and contains about 2000 galaxies. To find suitable candidates in catalogue, we made the assumption that the residues (original images minus model) of galaxies with B/PS bulges should exhibit a characteristic X-shape. Galaxies with such features were selected by eye and then used as input data for a neural network training, which was applied to a bigger sample of edge-on galaxies. Using the available data and the photometric models from the literature, we investigated the observational and statistical properties of the sample created. Comparing the $B/D$ ratios for galaxies with and without B/PS bulges, we found that the $B/D$ ratio for galaxies from our sample is statistically higher, with typical values in the range $\approx 0.2-0.5$ depending on the decomposition procedure. We studied how the opening angles $\varphi$ of the X-structure and the length of its rays are distributed in the formed sample and found them to be consistent with previous measurements and predictions from $N$-body models, e.g. $\varphi \gtrsim 25~\deg$, but measured here for a much larger number of galaxies. We found a sharp increase in the B/PS bulge fraction for stellar masses $\log M_{\star} \gtrsim 10.4$, but for edge-on galaxies, which complements the results of previous works. The sample can be used in future work to test various bar models and their relationship with B/PS bulges, as well as to study their stability and evolution.
