Graphyne (GY) and graphdiyne (GDY)-based materials represent an intriguing class of two-dimensional (2D) carbon-rich networks with tunable structures and properties surpassing those of graphene. However, the challenge of fabricating atomically well-defined crystalline GY/GDY-based systems largely hinders detailed electronic structure characterizations. Here, we report the emergence of an unconventional band structure in mesoscopically regular (~1 {\mu}m) metallated GDY sheets featuring a honeycomb lattice on Ag(111) substrates. Employing complementary scanning tunnelling and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies, electronic band formation with a gap of 2.5 eV is rigorously determined in agreement with real-space electronic characteristics. Extensive density functional theory calculations corroborate our observations as well as recent theoretical predictions that doubly degenerate frontier molecular orbitals on a honeycomb lattice give rise to flat, Dirac and Kagome bands close to Fermi level. These results illustrate the tremendous potential of engineering novel band structures via molecular orbital and lattice symmetries in atomically precise 2D carbon scaffolds.

Two-dimensional metal-organic porous networks (2D-MOPNs) are highly ordered quantum boxes for exploring surface confinements. In this context, the electron confinement from occupied Shockley-type surface states (SS) has been vigorously studied in 2D-MOPNs. In contrast, the confinement of excited surface states, such as image potential states (IPSs), remains elusive. In this work, we apply two-photon photoemission to investigate the confinement exemplarily for the first image state in a Cu-coordinated T4PT porous network (Cu-T4PT). Due to the lateral potential confinement in the Cu-T4PT, periodic replicas of the IPS as well as the SS are present in a momentum map. Surprisingly, the first IPS transforms into a nearly flat band with a substantial increase of the effective mass (> 150 %), while the band dispersion of the SS is almost unchanged. The giant confinement effect of the excited electrons can be attributed to the wavefunction location of the first IPS perpendicular to the surface, where the majority probability density mainly resides at the same height as repulsive potentials formed by the Cu-T4PT network. This coincidence leads to a more effective scattering barrier to the IPS electrons, which is not observed in the SS. Our findings demonstrate that the vertical potential landscape in a porous architecture also plays a crucial role in surface electron confinement.

Two-dimensional organic porous networks (2DOPNs) have opened new vistas for tailoring the physicochemical characteristics of metallic surfaces. These typically chemically bound nanoporous structures act as periodical quantum wells leading to the 2D confinements of surface electron gases, adatoms and molecular guests. Here we propose a new type of porous network with weakly interacting 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine (TPT) molecules on a Cu(111) surface, in which a temperature-driven (T-driven) phase transition can reversibly alter the supramolecular structures from a close-packed (CP-TPT) phase to a porous-network (PN-TPT) phase. Crucially, only the low-temperature PN-TPT exhibits subnano-scale cavities that can confine the surface state electrons and metal adatoms. The confined surface electrons undergo a significant electronic band renormalization. To activate the spin degree of freedom, the T-driven PN-TPT structure can additionally trap Co atoms within the cavities, forming highly ordered quantum dots. Our theoretical simulation reveals a complex spin carrier transfer from the confined Co cluster to the neighbouring TPT molecules via the underlying substrate. Our results demonstrate that weakly interacting 2DOPN offers a unique quantum switch capable of steering and controlling electrons and spin at surfaces via tailored quantum confinements.

The ability to confine light down to atomic scales is critical for the development of applications in optoelectronics and optical sensing as well as for the exploration of nanoscale quantum phenomena. Plasmons in metallic nanostructures can achieve this type of confinement, although fabrication imperfections down to the subnanometer scale hinder actual developments. Here, we demonstrate narrow plasmons in atomically thin crystalline silver nanostructures fabricated by prepatterning silicon substrates and epitaxially depositing silver films of just a few atomic layers in thickness. Combined with on-demand lateral shaping, this procedure allows for an unprecedented control over optical field confinement in the near-infrared spectral region. Specifically, we observe fundamental and higher-order plasmons featuring extreme spatial confinement and high-quality factors that reflect the crystallinity of the metal. Surfaces are at the frontier of every known solid. They provide versatile supports for functional nanostructures and mediate essential physicochemical processes. Being intimately related with 2D materials, interfaces and atomically thin films often feature distinct electronic states with respect to the bulk, which are key for many relevant properties, such as catalytic activity, interfacial charge-transfer, or crystal growth mechanisms. Of particular interest is reducing the surface electrons' dimensionality and spread with atomic precision, to induce novel quantum properties via lateral scattering and confinement. Both atomic manipulation and supramolecular principles provide access to custom-designed molecular superlattices, which tailor the surface electronic landscape and influence fundamental chemical and physical properties at the nanoscale. Herein, we review the confinement of surface state electrons focusing on their interaction with molecule-based scaffolds created by molecular manipulation and self-assembly protocols under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Starting from the quasi-free 2D electron gas present at the (111)-terminated surface planes of noble metals, we illustrate the enhanced molecule-based structural complexity and versatility compared to simple atoms. We survey low-dimensional confining structures in the form of artificial lattices, molecular nanogratings or quantum dot arrays, which are constructed upon appropriate choice of their building constituents. Whenever the realized (metal-)organic networks exhibit long-range order, modified surface band structures with characteristic features emerge, revealing intriguing physical properties, such as discretization, quantum coupling or energy and effective mass renormalization. Designing molecular organic semiconductors with distinct frontier orbitals is key for the development of devices with desirable properties. Generating defined organic nanostructures with atomic precision can be accomplished by on-surface synthesis. We use this dry chemistry to introduce topological variations in a conjugated poly-para-phenylene chain in the form of meta-junctions. As evidenced by STM and LEED, we produce a macroscopically ordered, monolayer thin zigzag chain film on a vicinal silver crystal. These cross-conjugated nanostructures are expected to display altered electronic properties, which are now unravelled by highly complementary experimental techniques (ARPES and STS) and theoretical calculations (DFT and EPWE). We find that meta-junctions dominate the weakly dispersive band structure, while the bandgap is tunable by altering the linear segment's length. These periodic topology effects induce significant loss of the electronic coupling between neighboring linear segments leading to partial electron confinement in the form of weakly coupled Quantum Dots. Such periodic quantum interference effects determine the overall semiconducting character and functionality of the chains.

Organosulfur compounds at the interface to noble metals have proved over the last decades to be extremely versatile systems for both fundamental and applied research. However, the anchoring of thiols to gold remained an object of controversy for long times. The RS-Au-SR linkage, in particular, is a robust bonding configuration that displays interesting properties. It is generated spontaneously at room temperature and can be used for the production of extended molecular nanostructures. In this work we explore the behavior of 1,4-Bis(4-mercaptophenyl)benzene (BMB) on the Au(111) surface, which results in the formation of 2D crystalline metal-organic assemblies stabilized by this type of Au-thiolate bonds. We show how to control the thiolates stereospecific bonding motif and thereby choose whether to form ordered arrays of Au3BMB3 units with embedded triangular nanopores, or linearly stacked metal-organic chains. The former turn out to be the thermodynamically favored structures and display confinement of the underneath Au(111) surface state. The electronic properties of single molecules as well as of the 2D crystalline self-assemblies have been characterized both on the metal-organic backbone and inside the associated pores.

Quantum dot arrays in the form of molecular nanoporous networks are renown for modifying the electronic surface properties through quantum confinement. Here we show that, compared to the pristine surface state, the fundamental energy of the confined states can exhibit downward shifts accompanied by a lowering of the effective masses simultaneous to the appearance of tiny gaps at the Brillouin zone boundaries. We observed these effects by angle resolved photoemission for two self-assembled homothetic (scalable) Co-coordinated metal-organic networks. Complementary scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements confirmed these findings. Electron plane wave expansion simulations and density functional theory calculations provide insight into the nature of this phenomenon, which we assign to metal-organic overlayer-substrate interactions in the form of adatom-substrate hybridization. The absence to date of the experimental band structure resulting from single adatom metal-coordinated nanoporous networks has precluded the observation of the significant surface state renormalization reported here, which we infer are general of low interacting and well-defined adatom arrays., Comment: 3 figures and main text SI missing

Light-matter interaction at the atomic scale rules fundamental phenomena such as photoemission and lasing, while enabling basic everyday technologies, including photovoltaics and optical communications. In this context, plasmons --the collective electron oscillations in conducting materials-- are important because they allow manipulating optical fields at the nanoscale. The advent of graphene and other two-dimensional crystals has pushed plasmons down to genuinely atomic dimensions, displaying appealing properties such as a large electrical tunability. However, plasmons in these materials are either too broad or lying at low frequencies, well below the technologically relevant near-infrared regime. Here we demonstrate sharp near-infrared plasmons in lithographically-patterned wafer-scale atomically-thin silver crystalline films. Our measured optical spectra reveal narrow plasmons (quality factor $\sim4$), further supported by a low sheet resistance comparable to bulk metal in few-atomic-layer silver films down to seven Ag(111) monolayers. Good crystal quality and plasmon narrowness are obtained despite the addition of a thin passivating dielectric, which renders our samples resilient to ambient conditions.
