Abstract

The lattice strain induced by metallic electrodes can impair the functionality of advanced quantum devices operating with electron or hole spins. Here we investigate the deformation induced by CMOS-manufactured titanium nitride electrodes on the lattice of a buried, 10 nm-thick Si/SiGe Quantum Well by means of nanobeam Scanning X-ray Diffraction Microscopy. We were able to measure TiN electrode-induced local modulations of the strain tensor components in the range of $2 - 8 \times 10^{-4}$ with ~60 nm lateral resolution. We have evaluated that these strain fluctuations are reflected into local modulations of the potential of the conduction band minimum larger than 2 meV, which is close to the orbital energy of an electrostatic quantum dot. We observe that the sign of the strain modulations at a given depth of the quantum well layer depends on the lateral dimensions of the electrodes. Since our work explores the impact of device geometry on the strain-induced energy landscape, it enables further optimization of the design of scaled CMOS-processed quantum devices., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Using the approach based on Bogoliubov compensation principle is applied to calculation of a contribution to the muon $g-2$. Using the previous results on spontaneous generation of the effective anomalous three-boson interaction we calculate the contribution, which proves to agree with the well-known discrepancy. The calculated quantity contains no adjusting parameters but the experimental values for the muon and the W-boson masses. 6. Looking for non-perturbative effects of the electroweak interaction at the LHC

Abstract

We are considering a possibility for detecting non-perturbative effect in process of top pair production in association with a high $p_T$ photon. Starting from previous results on two solutions for a spontaneous generation of wouldbe effective interaction of a top pair with a pair of electro-weak bosons, we show, that a solution with effective cut-off $\Lambda \simeq 10^2\,TeV$ is already contradicting to existing data, while the other one with $\Lambda \simeq 10^{16}\,TeV$ (just the Planck scale) could be reconciled with data and give predictions for process $p+p\to\bar t t \gamma+X$, which could be effectively checked at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13\,TeV$. Abstract

Assuming an existence of an anomalous triple electro-weak bosons interaction being defined by coupling constant $\lambda$, we calculate its contribution to interactions of the Higgs with pairs of heavy particles. Bearing in mind experimental restrictions $-0.011 < \lambda < 0.011$ we present results for possible effects in processes $p\,p \to W^+ W^- H,\,p\,p \to W^+ Z H,\,p\,p \to W^- Z H,\,p\,p \to \bar t t H $, $p p \to \bar b b H$. Effects could be significant with negative sign of $\lambda$ in associated heavy quarks $t,\,b$ pairs production with the Higgs. Abstract

Recently reported diboson and diphoton excesses at LHC are interpreted to be connected with heavy $WW$ zero spin resonances. The resonances appears due to the wouldbe anomalous triple interaction of the weak bosons, which is defined by well-known coupling constant $\lambda$. The $2\, TeV$ anomaly tentatively corresponds to weak isotopic spin 2 scalar state and the $\gamma\gamma\,\,750\, GeV$ anomaly corresponds to weak isotopic spin 0 pseudoscalar state. We obtain estimates for the effect, which qualitatively agree with ATLAS data. Effects are predicted in a production of $W^+ W^-, (Z,\gamma) (Z,\gamma)$ via resonance $X_{PS}$ with $M_{PS} \simeq 750\,GeV$, which could be reliably checked at the upgraded LHC at $\sqrt{s}\,=\,13\, TeV$. In the framework of an approach to the spontaneous generation of the triple anomalous interaction its coupling constant is estimated to be $\lambda = -\,0.02\pm 0.005$ in an agreement with existing restrictions. Abstract

Flux transfer events (FTEs) are transient magnetic flux ropes at Earth's dayside magnetopause formed due to magnetic reconnection. As they move across the magnetopause surface, they can generate disturbances in the ultralow frequency (ULF) range, which then propagate into the magnetosphere. This study provides evidence of ULF waves in the Pc2 wave frequency range (>0.1 Hz) caused by FTEs during dayside reconnection using a global 3D hybrid‐Vlasov simulation (Vlasiator). These waves resulted from FTE formation and propagation at the magnetopause are particularly associated with large, rapidly moving FTEs. The wave power is stronger in the morning than afternoon, showing local time asymmetry. In the pre and postnoon equatorial regions, significant poloidal and toroidal components are present alongside the compressional component. The noon sector, with fewer FTEs, has lower wave power and limited magnetospheric propagation. Plain Language Summary: The Earth's magnetosphere is a dynamic region shaped by the interplay between the solar wind and Earth's magnetic field. This interaction occurs at the boundary of the magnetosphere (magnetopause) through a process known as magnetic reconnection, giving rise to Flux Transfer Events (FTEs), which are magnetic structures that carry flux and energy into the magnetosphere. These FTEs form either in sudden bursts, patchy patterns or in a continuous, and relatively stable way making the magnetopause surface dynamic. As the FTEs move along the boundary of the magnetosphere, they create compressed regions and lead to wave generation that can extend into the magnetosphere. The study uses an advanced 3D hybrid‐Vlasov simulation model to analyze waves originated from FTE formation and propagation at the magnetopause. We find that rapidly moving and large FTEs have a significant impact on the magnetopause, leading to the generation of ULF waves with frequency above 0.1 Hz. This shows first direct evidence supporting previous theoretical speculations regarding the ability of FTEs to generate waves near the magnetopause. 20. Six-dimensional view of Earth’s magnetosphere with the Vlasiator simulation

Abstract

Vlasiator is a hybrid-Vlasov model designed for global simulations of Earth's magnetosphere. In the hybrid-Vlasov approach, ions are described as velocity distribution functions and electrons are a charge-neutralising fluid. This provides a self-consistent description of ion dynamics in the global magnetospheric context. Vlasiator simulations have been at first confined to two dimensions in ordinary space (2D) and three in velocity space (3V), due to their high computational cost. The recent implementation of adaptive mesh refinement now makes it possible to run 6D (3D-3V) global simulations of Earth's magnetosphere. Here we present an overview of recent results obtained with these new 6D simulations, pertaining to magnetotail dynamics, magnetopause motion, and particle precipitation into the ionosphere. The runs are carried out with a purely southward interplanetary magnetic field, which is conducive to dayside and nightside reconnection. On the dayside, we find that cusp proton precipitation is modulated by flux transfer events formed by magnetopause reconnection. In the magnetotail, the global simulation reveals the interplay between instabilities and reconnection, and their combined role in global magnetotail reconfiguration. Abstract

Numerical simulations have grown to play a central role in modern sciences over the years. The ever-improving technology of supercomputers has made large and precise models available. However, this accuracy is often limited by the cost of computational resources. Lowering the simulation's spatial resolution in order to conserve resources can lead to key processes being unresolved. We have shown in a previous study how insufficient spatial resolution of the proton cyclotron instability leads to a misrepresentation of ion dynamics in hybrid-Vlasov simulations. This leads to larger than expected temperature anisotropy and loss-cone shaped velocity distribution functions. In this study, we present a sub-grid numerical model to introduce pitch-angle diffusion in a 3D Cartesian velocity space, at a spatial resolution where the relevant wave-particle interactions were previously not correctly resolved. We show that the method is successfully able to isotropize loss-cone shaped velocity distribution functions, and that this method could be applied to simulations in order to save computational resources and still correctly model wave-particle interactions.

35. Cold ion energization at separatrices during magnetic reconnection

Abstract

Separatrices of magnetic reconnection host intense perpendicular Hall electric fields. The fields are produced by the decoupling of the ion and electron components and are associated with the in-plane electrostatic potential drop between the inflow and outflow regions. The width of these structures is typically less than the ion inertial length, which is small enough to demagnetize ions as they cross the layer. We investigate ion acceleration at separatrices by means of 2D particle-in-cell simulations of magnetic reconnection for two limiting cases: (1) a "GEM-like" setup (here GEM stands for geospace environmental modeling reconnection challenge) with the lobe ion thermal velocity equal to the thermal velocity of the initial current sheet ions, which is comparable to the Alfven velocity and (2) a "cold" ion setup, in which the temperature of the background lobe ions is 1/100 of the initial current sheet temperature. The separatrix Hall electric field is balanced by the ion inertia term in the cold background simulations. The effect is indicative of the quasi-steady local perpendicular acceleration. The electric field introduces a cross field beam of unmagnetized particles, which makes the ion distribution function strongly non-gyrotropic and susceptible to sub-ion scale instabilities. This acceleration mechanism nearly vanishes in the hot ion background simulations. Our particle-in-cell simulations are complemented by one-dimensional test particle calculations. They show that the hot ion particles experience energy-scattering after crossing the accelerating layer, whereas cold ions are uniformly energized up to the energies comparable to the electrostatic potential drop between the inflow and outflow regions.

В статье представлен датчик на основе щелевой моды в акустической линии задержки для экспресс-анализа и оценки жизнеспособности бактериальных клеток непосредственно в жидкой проводящей суспензии. В качестве аналитического сигнала использовали изменение глубины и частоты пиков резонансного поглощения на частотной зависимости полных потерь выходного сигнала датчика до и после биологического взаимодействия бактериальных клеток с бактериофагами. Измерения проводились в суспензиях с начальной проводимостью 5–30 мкСм/см. Для подавления биохимических процессов в бактериальных клетках с целью оценки их жизнеспособности клеточную суспензию подвергали температурному воздействию в температурном интервале 60–100 °С с последующим охлаждением. Конструкция датчика позволяла многократно использовать съемный контейнер, при этом значительно упрощался процесс его очистки от отработанного образца. The article presents a slot-mode sensor in acoustic delay line for rapid analysis and assessment of the viability of bacterial cells directly in a liquid conductive suspension. The main element of the sensor is the delay line made of the Y-X lithium niobate plate. Two interdigital transducers (IDTs) were applied to the surface of the plate to excite and receive the acoustic SH0 wave. A liquid container was placed above the waveguide of the delay line between the IDTs with the given gap of 8 μm. The bottom of the container was made of the Z-X + 30° lithium niobate plate. The sensor was connected to the Sparameter meter E5071C (Agilent, USA), and the frequency dependence of the insertion loss of the sensor output signal was measured. During the measurements the presence of pronounced resonance peaks in the frequency dependence of the insertion loss of the sensor associated with the excitation of the slot mode was observed. The method of the analysis of the microbial cells was based on recording changes in the depth and frequency of resonance absorption peaks on the frequency dependence of the insertion loss of the sensor before and after the biological interaction of the microbial cells with the specific bacteriophages. The sensor recorded the infection of microbial cells with the specific bacteriophages in suspensions with the initial conductivity of 4.5–30 μS/cm. The analysis time was 5–10 minutes, the limit of the determination of the microbial cells was 103 cells/ml. The control experiments were conducted with the nonspecific interactions of the microbial cells with the bacteriophages, in which no change in the sensor parameters was observed. To suppress the biochemical processes in the cells or the further assessment of their viability, the cell suspension was heated to 60, 80, and 100 °C. Then the cell suspension was cooled to the room temperature, placed in the liquid container and the sensor readings were recorded. After that, the specific bacteriophage was added and the sensor readings were again recorded. A distinctive feature of the used sensor is the lack of contact of the suspension under investigation with the thin (200 μm) waveguide of the delay line. Therefore, the additional advantage of the sensor is the presence of a removable container with the liquid, which allows to reuse it and to facilitate the process of cleaning the container from the spent sample. Abstract

В статье представлен датчик на основе щелевой моды в акустической линии задержки для экспресс-анализа и оценки жизнеспособности бактериальных клеток непосредственно в жидкой проводящей суспензии. В качестве аналитического сигнала использовали изменение глубины и частоты пиков резонансного поглощения на частотной зависимости полных потерь выходного сигнала датчика до и после биологического взаимодействия бактериальных клеток с бактериофагами. Измерения проводились в суспензиях с начальной проводимостью 5–30 мкСм/см. Для подавления биохимических процессов в бактериальных клетках с целью оценки их жизнеспособности клеточную суспензию подвергали температурному воздействию в температурном интервале 60–100 °С с последующим охлаждением.
