Abstract

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an interesting alternative for the purification, decontamination and smell abatment of air. In the present work, the photocatalytic oxidation of 2-butanone (MEK : methyl ethyle ketone) is investigated, this low molecular mass product being the source of serious smell pollution. The influence of light and of the pollutant concentration were investigated in an annular photoreactor. As most VOC's, the degradation rate of MEK follows a Langmuir-Hinshelwood type law. Intermediate products were analysed by GC-MD ; acetaldehyde is the dominant byproduct of the photocatalytic oxidation.

Abstract

The photocatalytic degradation of tylosin has been studied using immobilized titanium dioxide as catalyst. T he processes of degradation and reduction of tylosin was examined, and the activity is dominantly dependent on the surface coverage of the catalysts, The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model is satisfactorily obeyed at initial time and in the course of the reaction. These results suggest the feasibility of a photocatalytic system on the elimination of such antibiotic.

Photocatalysis is often used in air purification. Photocatalytic degradation od VOC's has been investigated in a number of devices. An optimisation of this process requires a chracterisation of the reactor : in a first step the gas flow behaviour has to be studied (plug flow, CSTR,...) by RTD analysis; then, chemical kinetics have to be determined as a function ot the relevant parameters (space time, relative humidity, concentrations, etc). 7. Photosensitization of TiO2by Polyaniline for Salicylic acid Degradation Under Visible Light

Abstract

The research in this work is part of broadening the photocatalytic performance of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the visible region by associating TiO2with polyaniline to degrade organic pollutants. The polyaniline/TiO2composites were synthesized by oxidative polymerization with different percentages of TiO2at room temperature and investigated by use of various characterization techniques such as FTIR, XRD and DRS. Infrared spectroscopy in ATR mode revealed the shift of different chemical bands to high wavenumbers, which are attributed to strong polyaniline and TiO2interactions. The diffraction pattern of the synthesized composites exhibited crystalline behavior with a crystallite size of about 29 nm. Absorbance measurements have shown an important decrease in gap energy values of the synthesized nanocomposites of approximately 2.5 eV instead of 3.2 eV for TiO2alone, revealing that the incorporation of polyaniline has played a crucial role in expanding the light absorption to the visible range for more photocatalytic applications. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanocomposites was tested by degrading salicylic acid in the presence of simulated sunlight. As expected, the photocatalytic activity in the visible region of the synthesized nanocomposites was larger than that of TiO2regarding the degradation of salicylic acid. The photocatalytic efficiency increases with the molar ratio TiO2/Aniline and with the used amount of photocatalyst. This performance of the photocatalytic activity in the visible range would avoid the use of radiation in the UV range, thus reducing the energy costs of the treatment.

Abstract

International audience; In the present work, the efficiency of UV-A/TiO2 photocatalytic process to remove sulfamethoxa-zole (SMX) from aqueous solution was investigated using TiO2 Degussa P25 and TiO2 Millennium PC500 immobilized on glass plates. The effects of operating parameters such as initial SMX concentration (10-50 mg L-1), initial pH value (3-9), flow rate of the reactor (0.11-0.48 L min-1) and visible irradiation on process efficiency were studied. All experiments were performed on a fixed-bed recirculating photoreactor. The optimal condition for the SMX removal was obtained at low SMX initial concentration and nearly complete SMX degradation was attained after 7 h irradiation at 10 mg L-1 with TiO2 Degussa P25.The SMX degradation was not affected by the variation of the initial pH of the solution. The effect of flow rate showed that there was no significant impact of this variable on the degradation of SMX, which eliminates the influence of diffusion limitation.Photodegradation seems to follow the Langmuir Hinshelwood pseudo first order kinetic model. The apparent rate constants were found to be 0.008 and 0.003 min-1 under UV irradiation for TiO2 Degussa P25 and TiO2 Millennium PC500, respectively. The obtained results show that supported TiO2 Degussa P25 is more active than supported TiO2 500.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of titanium dioxide TiO2 coated non-woven paper in removing Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) antibiotic from aqueous solutions.The effects of initial concentration and the circulation flow rate of the reactor on the photocatalytic degradation of SMX have been investigated experimentally, in the presence of TiO2 fixed on non-woven paper, under UV light.Kinetics of Langmuir and Langmuir–Hinshelwood were studied respectively in the dark and under UV irradiation. Results indicated that the constant of adsorption calculated from the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model is higher than that calculated from adsorption isotherm.The degradation rate was higher at low concentration as well as the kinetics of photocatalytic degradation of SMX was found to follow a first-order rate law. The circulation flow rate of the reactor has no significant effect on the SMX removal kinetic within the used range.

Abstract

iFirst article; International audience; Chemical reactions in a microreactor can offer newpossibilities for many chemical engineering application fields and have been employed in photocatalysis studies. The purpose of this work is to investigate the photocatalytic degradation of salicylic acid (SA) as a pollutant model, in a continuous flowmicrochannel reactor in order to evaluate the influence of radial concentration profile on the photocatalytic efficiency. The study has been developed on both experimental and theoretical aspects. Microreactors have been manufactured by stereolithography in epoxy resin (Accura† SI 30) and are composed of a channel with a rectangular cross-section of about 1mm2 with different aspect ratios defined as width/depth. Photocatalytic experiments have been performed at different flow rates. Results can be predicted by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) kinetic model coupledwith surface diffusion. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD-Comsol Multiphysics) can model phenomena and confirmed the reliability of our experimental resultswith diffusion limitation at low flow rate.

Abstract

La photocatalyse hétérogène apparaît comme une technologie alternative efficace pour la purification, la décontamination et la désodorisation des effluents gazeux. L'équipe « Génie Photocatalytique » du DCPR s'est intéressé à l'étude de la 2-butanone ou méthyléthylcétone (MEK), Composé Organique Volatil (COV) de faible poids moléculaire (< 100 g/mol), pouvant engendrer de sérieuses nuisances olfactives. Plusieurs paramètres cinétiques comme l'influence de la concentration initiale et l'éclairement incident ont été étudiés sur la photodégradation de la MEK au sein d'un photoréacteur annulaire. Comme la plupart des COVs, la dégradation de la MEK semble suivre le modèle cinétique de Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH). Les produits intermédiaires gazeux ont été analysés par GC/MS et l'acétaldéhyde s'est avéré comme le sous-produit majoritaire lors de la dégradation photocatalytique.

49. Degradation of sulfamethoxazole by photocatalysis using supported TiO2.

Abstract

In the present work, the efficiency of UV-A/TiO2 photocatalytic process to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from aqueous solution was investigated using TiO2 Degussa P25 and TiO2 Millennium PC500 immobilized on glass plates. The effects of operating parameters such as initial SMX concentration (10-50 mg L-1), initial pH value (3-9), flow rate of the reactor (0.11-0.48 L min-1) and visible irradiation on process efficiency were studied. All experiments were performed on a fixed-bed recirculating photoreactor. The optimal condition for the SMX removal was obtained at low SMX initial concentration and nearly complete SMX degradation was attained after 7 h irradiation at 10 mg L-1 with TiO2 Degussa P25. The SMX degradation was not affected by the variation of the initial pH of the solution. The effect of flow rate showed that there was no significant impact of this variable on the degradation of SMX, which eliminates the influence of diffusion limitation. Photodegradation seems to follow the Langmuir Hinshelwood pseudo first order kinetic model. The apparent rate constants were found to be 0.008 and 0.003 min-1 under UV irradiation for TiO2 Degussa P25 and TiO2 Millennium PC500, respectively. Abstract

UV/titanium dioxide ( TiO2) degradation of two xanthene dyes, erythrosine B (Ery) and eosin Y (Eos), was studied in a photocatalytic reactor. Photocatalysis was able to degrade 98% of Ery and 73% of Eos and led to 65% of chemical oxygen demand removal. Experiments in buffered solutions at different initial pH values reveal the pH dependence of the process, with better results obtained under acidic conditions due to the electrostatic attraction caused by the opposite charges of TiO2 (positive) and of anionic dyes (negative). Batch activity tests under methanogenic conditions showed the high toxicity exerted by the dyes even at low concentrations (~85% with initial concentration of 0.3 mmol L−1), but the end products of photocatalytic treatment were much less toxic toward methanogenic bacteria, as detoxification of 85 ± 5% for Eos and 64 ± 7% for Ery were obtained. In contrast, the dyes had no inhibitory effect on the biogenic-carbon biodegradation activity of aerobic biomass, obtained by respirometry. The results demonstrate that photocatalysis combining UV/ TiO2 as a pretreatment followed by an anaerobic biological process may be promising for the treatment of wastewaters produced by many industries.
