Vaccination is crucial in controlling the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that triggered the pandemic, but herd immunity can only work with high vaccination coverage in the population. This study aims to measure the COVID-19 knowledge level and determine the factors influencing COVID-19 vaccination intention among university students in Malaysia. A cross-sectional online survey was carried out with 1,274 Malaysian university students in July 2021. Univariate and multivariate analyses were employed to examine the relationships between the study variables. Results showed that the majority of university students had an acceptable level of knowledge of COVID-19. The knowledge, risk perception of COVID-19, social norms, and perceived benefit of COVID-19 vaccination were positively associated with vaccination intention. However, perceived trust in information sources of COVID-19 vaccination and the government's response to COVID-19 did not affect the university students' desire to receive the vaccination. These findings are essential for health policymakers and healthcare providers to implement evidence-based interventions to increase COVID-19 vaccination uptake among university students., (© 2022 Chinese Medical Association Publishing House. Objective: To compare colorectal cancer (CRC) incidences in carriers of pathogenic variants of the MMR genes in the PLSD and IMRC cohorts, of which only the former included mandatory colonoscopy surveillance for all participants., Methods: CRC incidences were calculated in an intervention group comprising a cohort of confirmed carriers of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in mismatch repair genes (path&#95;MMR) followed prospectively by the Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database (PLSD). All had colonoscopy surveillance, with polypectomy when polyps were identified. Comparison was made with a retrospective cohort reported by the International Mismatch Repair Consortium (IMRC). This comprised confirmed and inferred path&#95;MMR carriers who were first- or second-degree relatives of Lynch syndrome probands., Results: In the PLSD, 8,153 subjects had follow-up colonoscopy surveillance for a total of 67,604 years and 578 carriers had CRC diagnosed. Average cumulative incidences of CRC in path&#95;MLH1 carriers at 70 years of age were 52% in males and 41% in females; for path&#95;MSH2 50% and 39%; for path&#95;MSH6 13% and 17% and for path&#95;PMS2 11% and 8%. In contrast, in the IMRC cohort, corresponding cumulative incidences were 40% and 27%; 34% and 23%; 16% and 8% and 7% and 6%. Comparing just the European carriers in the two series gave similar findings. Numbers in the PLSD series did not allow comparisons of carriers from other continents separately. Cumulative incidences at 25 years were < 1% in all retrospective groups., Conclusions: Prospectively observed CRC incidences (PLSD) in path&#95;MLH1 and path&#95;MSH2 carriers undergoing colonoscopy surveillance and polypectomy were higher than in the retrospective (IMRC) series, and were not reduced in path&#95;MSH6 carriers. Introduction: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness with clusters of symptoms, including cognitive impairment. This study aimed to explore the effect of Tualang Honey (TH) on cognitive domains, especially as it pertained to the verbal memory of schizophrenia patients., Method: This was a cross-sectional study involved 80 individuals, diagnosed with schizophrenia. The Malay Version Auditory Verbal Learning Test (MVAVLT) was used. Data were analysed using SPSS 20.0 software. Intention to treat analysis was applied., Result: A comparison of the total learning score at eight weeks between the two groups based on time effect and time-treatment interaction favoured TH group., Conclusion: This study concludes that by supplementing schizophrenia patients with 8-week of TH did improve total learning performance across domains in the immediate memory among patients with schizophrenia., (© 2020 The Authors.)

Background and Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized as a cluster of metabolic disorder including increased blood pressure, elevated blood glucose level, high cholesterol level and visceral fat obesity. Polypeptide hormones such as adiponectin and resistin play a significant role in glucose and lipids metabolism, liver and pancreas function. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum adiponectin and resistin with MetS criteria among Temiar subtribe in Kuala Betis., Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study involved 123 subjects from Temiar subtribe in Kuala Betis, Gua Musang, Kelantan. MetS criteria were measured according to standard protocol by modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) guideline. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were performed including serum adiponectin and resistin for every study subjects., Results: Serum adiponectin was significantly lower in MetS subjects (7.98 ± 5.65 ng/ml) but serum resistin was found to be significantly higher in MetS subjects (11.22 ± 6.34 ng/ml) compared to non-MetS subjects with p < 0.001 and p = 0.002 respectively. Serum adiponectin was negatively correlated with most of the cardio-metabolic risk factors; BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol. Serum resistin was found to be positively correlated with BMI, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose and total cholesterol., Conclusion: The difference in serum adiponectin and resistin level among MetS individuals indicated the potential of serum adiponectin and resistin to be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of MetS among Temiar subtribe., (Copyright © 2019 Diabetes India. Consumption of soluble dietary fibre is recommended as part of a healthy diet. Evidence has shown that soluble dietary fibre slows gastric emptying, increases perceived satiety and plays a significant role in appetite regulation. This systematic review examined the effects of soluble dietary fibre using randomised-controlled trials (RCTs). Three different electronic databases were used, namely PubMed, Scopus ® and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Effect size (Cohen's d ) was calculated based on the intergroup mean difference and standard deviation ( SD ) followed by Cochran's Q and I ² determination. The effect size was statistically pooled in the meta-analyses and presented as a forest plot. The risk of bias was high for each study as assessed using the Jadad scale. Meta-analysis of statistically pooled data for guar gum showed a sizeable effect on post-meal energy intake, followed by β-glucan, alginate, polydextrose and pectin, with pooled effect sizes of -0.90, -0.44, -0.42, -0.36 and -0.26, respectively. Guar gum (5 g) effectively reduced energy intake when prepared in milk beverages compared with control milk ( p < 0.001). Alginate, when prepared in liquid (5 g) or solid (9 g) meals, effectively reduced energy intake compared with control ( p < 0.001). A high dose of polydextrose (25 g) prepared in liquid meal form significantly reduced energy intake ( p = 0.01). This study suggests that soluble fibres are not all created equal. Further interventional studies are needed to determine whether combinations of these soluble fibres might have greater effects than individual fibres per se.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) occurs as a more common sporadic form and a less common familial form. Our earlier analysis of germline mutations of mismatch repair genes confirmed only 32% of familial CRC cases as Lynch syndrome cases. It was hypothesized that the remaining familial aggregation may be 'polygenic' due to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of low penetrance genes involved in cancer predisposition pathways, such as cell cycle regulation and apoptosis pathways. The current case-control study involving 104 CRC patients (52 sporadic and 52 familial) and 104 normal healthy controls investigated the contribution of the SNPs cyclin D1 (CCND1) G870A and tumor protein p53 ( TP53 ) C215G in modulating familial and sporadic CRC susceptibility risk. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and the polymorphisms were genotyped by employing a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. The association between these polymorphisms and CRC susceptibility risk was calculated using a binary logistic regression analysis and deriving odds ratios (ORs). The A/A variant genotype of CCND1 and G/G variant genotype of TP53 exhibited a significantly greater association with the risk of sporadic CRC [ CCND1 : OR, 3.471; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.443-8.350; P=0.005. TP53 : OR, 2.829; CI, 1.119-7.152; P=0.026] as well as familial CRC susceptibility ( CCND1 : OR, 3.086; CI, 1.270-7.497; P=0.019. TP53: OR, 3.048; CI, 1.147-8.097; P=0.030). The results suggest a potential role of the SNPs CCND1 G870A and TP53 C215G in the modulation of sporadic and familial CRC susceptibility risk.

Aim: To investigate the protein expression profile of mismatch repair (MMR) genes in suspected cases of Lynch syndrome and to characterize the associated germline mutations., Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis of tumor samples was performed to determine the protein expression profile of MMR protein. Germline mutation screening was carried out on peripheral blood samples. The entire exon regions of MLH1 and MSH2 genes were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, screened by denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (dHPLC) and analyzed by DNA sequencing to characterize the germline mutations., Results: Three out of 34 tissue samples (8.8%) and four out of 34 tissue samples (11.8%) showed loss of nuclear staining by immunohistochemistry, indicating the absence of MLH1 and MSH2 protein expression in carcinoma cells, respectively. dHPLC analysis followed by DNA sequencing showed these samples to have germline mutations of MSH2 gene. However, no deleterious mutations were identified in any of the 19 exons or coding regions of MLH1 gene, but we were able to identify MLH1 promoter polymorphism, -93G > A (rs1800734), in 21 out of 34 patients (61.8%). We identified one novel mutation, transversion mutation c.2005G > C, which resulted in a missense mutation (Gly669Arg), a transversion mutation in exon 1, c.142G > T, which resulted in a nonsense mutation (Glu48Stop) and splice-site mutation, c.2006-6T > C, which was adjacent to exon 13 of MSH2 gene., Conclusion: Germline mutations were identified in four Malaysian Lynch syndrome patients. Immunohistochemical analysis of tumor tissue proved to be a good pre-screening test before proceeding to germline mutation analysis of DNA MMR genes.

The Prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) receptor gene has been found to play an important role in reducing the intraocular pressure of the glaucomatous patients. Variations of the PGF2alpha receptor gene may be responsible for the differences in the response to an antiglaucoma drug, Latanoprost. A combined method of denaturing High Performance Liquid Chromatography (dHPLC) and sequencing was applied to detection of the PGF2alpha receptor gene variant among the 76 Malaysian patients with glaucoma, and a novel single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), IVS -97A>T, was identified. According to the genotyping analysis, 36.8% of the subjects were heterozygous for the variant allele T, while 9.2% homozygous. The frequency of variant allele T was 0.28. Although with a limited number of samples, our data suggested that this polymorphism is common in the Malaysian patients with glaucoma.
