Abstract

Climate change and other anthropogenic stressors have led to long-term changes in the thermal structure, including surface temperatures, deepwater temperatures, and vertical thermal gradients, in many lakes around the world. Though many studies highlight warming of surface water temperatures in lakes worldwide, less is known about long-term trends in full vertical thermal structure and deepwater temperatures, which have been changing less consistently in both direction and magnitude. Here, we present a globally-expansive data set of summertime in-situ vertical temperature profiles from 153 lakes, with one time series beginning as early as 1894. We also compiled lake geographic, morphometric, and water quality variables that can influence vertical thermal structure through a variety of potential mechanisms in these lakes. These long-term time series of vertical temperature profiles and corresponding lake characteristics serve as valuable data to help understand changes and drivers of lake thermal structure in a time of rapid global and ecological change.

Abstract

Globally, lake surface water temperatures have warmed rapidly relative to air temperatures, but changes in deepwater temperatures and vertical thermal structure are still largely unknown. We have compiled the most comprehensive data set to date of long-term (1970-2009) summertime vertical temperature profiles in lakes across the world to examine trends and drivers of whole-lake vertical thermal structure. We found significant increases in surface water temperatures across lakes at an average rate of + 0.37 °C decade-1, comparable to changes reported previously for other lakes, and similarly consistent trends of increasing water column stability (+ 0.08 kg m-3 decade-1). In contrast, however, deepwater temperature trends showed little change on average (+ 0.06 °C decade-1), but had high variability across lakes, with trends in individual lakes ranging from - 0.68 °C decade-1 to + 0.65 °C decade-1. The variability in deepwater temperature trends was not explained by trends in either surface water temperatures or thermal stability within lakes, and only 8.4% was explained by lake thermal region or local lake characteristics in a random forest analysis. These findings suggest that external drivers beyond our tested lake characteristics are important in explaining long-term trends in thermal structure, such as local to regional climate patterns or additional external anthropogenic influences.

Abstract

The widespread salinisation of freshwater ecosystems poses a major threat to the biodiversity, functioning, and services that they provide. Human activities promote freshwater salinisation through multiple drivers (e.g., agriculture, resource extraction, urbanisation) that are amplified by climate change. Due to its complexity, we are still far from fully understanding the ecological and evolutionary consequences of freshwater salinisation. Here, we assess current research gaps and present a research agenda to guide future studies. We identified different gaps in taxonomic groups, levels of biological organisation, and geographic regions. We suggest focusing on global- and landscape-scale processes, functional approaches, genetic and molecular levels, and ecoevolutionary dynamics as key future avenues to predict the consequences of freshwater salinisation for ecosystems and human societies.

Abstract

Lake Cadagno (26 ha) is a crenogenic meromictic lake located in the Swiss Alps at 1921 m asl with a maximum depth of 21 m. The presence of crystalline rocks and a dolomite vein rich in gypsum in the catchment area makes the lake a typical “sulphuretum ” dominated by coupled carbon and sulphur cycles. The chemocline lies at about 12 m depth, stabilized by density differences of salt-rich water supplied by sub-aquatic springs to the monimolimnion and of electrolyte-poor surface water feeding the mixolimnion. Steep sulphide and light gradients in the chemocline support the growth of a large bacterial plume (up to 107 cells ml−1) dominated by green sulphur bacteria (GSB) of the genus Chlorobium and purple sulphur bacteria (PSB) of the Chromatiaceae family. Since the early Holocene (10.5–8 cal kyr BP), PSB and GSB are showing long-term alternation in abundance and relative dominance. Key species are Chlorobium clathratiforme , Thiocystis chemoclinalis , Thiocystis cadagnonensis , Candidatus “ Thiodictyon syntrophicum ” and Chromatium okenii ; the latter represents only 0.3 % of the total cell number but due to its big size and high activity can contribute up to 70 % of the total carbon uptake in the chemocline. Small-celled PSB together with the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfocapsa thiozymogenes sp. form stable aggregates in the lake, which represent small microenvironments with an internal sulphur cycle. Eukaryotic primary producers in the anoxic zones are dominated by Cryptomonas phaseolus , whereas eukaryotic heterotrophs are represented by ciliates and choanoflagellates, but a clade of heteroloboseans and two novel clades distantly related to opisthokonts and Cercozoa are also present. Zooplankton and fish abundance in the mixolimnion of this model ecosystem are linked via food web to the chemocline microbial plume, consequently anaerobic primary production supports relative high fish productivity in the lake.

43. The Effect of Food Concentration on the Juvenile Somatic Growth Rate of Body Length, Fecundity and the Production of Resting Eggs by Moina brachiata (Crustacea: Cladocera) Single Females

Работа посвящена изучению действия концентрации одноклеточной водоросли Chlorella vulgaris на параметры жизненного цикла самок M. brachiata (длина тела, удельная ювенильная соматическая скорость роста, количество потомков, количество самок, образующих эфиппиальные яйца). Наименьшая концентрация корма, используемая в эксперименте, 100 тысяч клеток/мл, оказывала лимитирующее действие на размер самок в период появления первого потомства, ювенильную соматическую скорость роста и плодовитость; также данная концентрация пищи вызывала образование покоящихся яиц у самок. При увеличении концентрации корма, размер самок в период появления первого потомства, их соматическая скорость роста и плодовитость возрастали, а количество самок, образующих эфиппиумы, снижалось. При культивировании с использованием максимальных тестируемых концентраций пищи (400 и 800 тысяч клеток/мл) размер самок в период появления первого потомства, соматическая скорость роста и количество появившихся потомков были наибольшими, при этом ни одна из самок в эксперименте не образовывала покоящихся яиц. Мы также исследовали действие концентрации пищи, при котором содержалось материнское поколение на способность их потомков формировать латентные яйца. Отсутствие эфиппиумов наблюдалось только при использовании наибольших концентраций пищи в экспериментах для материнских особей и их потомков (400 тысяч клеток/мл). Таким образом, мы предполагаем, что обеспеченность пищей выше 400 тысяч клеток/мл благоприятна для партеногенетического размножения самок M. brachiata. Результаты об уровне пищевой обеспеченности, вызывающей формирование покоящихся яиц у самок M. brachiata, получены впервые. The study addresses the effect of different food concentrations of green alga Chlorella vulgaris on the life cycle parameters (the body length, specific juvenile somatic growth rate of body length, the number of offspring in the first clutch of parthenogenetic females and the number of females producing resting eggs) of the individually cultivated females of M. brachiata. The lowest food concentration used in the experiment, 100 thousand cells/ml, had a limiting effect on such parameters as the size of females at the first reproduction, juvenile somatic growth rate of body length and fecundity; it also induced the production of resting eggs by females. With food concentration increase, the size of females at the first reproduction, their somatic growth rate of body length and fecundity also increased, and the number of females that produced resting eggs decreased. Under maximal food concentrations (400 and 800 thousand cells/ml) the size of females at the first reproduction, the somatic growth rates of body length and the number of hatched offspring were the largest, and there were no females producing ephippial eggs. We also tested the effect of food concentration under which the maternal generation was kept on the ability of the offspring generation to produce resting eggs. The production of resting eggs failed to occur only at the highest food concentrations for maternal females and their offspring (400 thousand cells/ml). Thus, we concluded that food concentration above 400 thousand cells/ml is favorable concentration for parthenogenetic reproduction of M. brachiata. Since there are no literature data on what food concentration induces the production of resting eggs for this species, the results define the trophic conditions that induce production of resting eggs in M. brachiata.

Впервые исследована деградация пленок из поли(3-гидроксибутирата) и поли(3- гидроксибутирата-со-3-гидроксивалерата) в солоноватоводном озере Шира на различных глубинах: 3, 9, 13 и 20 м, соответствующих горизонтам стратификации озера. Показано, что наиболее активно деградация пленок (снижение массы пленок и молекулярной массы полимера) происходит в эпилимнионе на глубине 3 м, в наиболее прогреваемом и аэрируемом горизонте озера. Деградация пленок зафиксирована также в хемоклине на глубине 13 м и на глубине 20 м в монимолимнионе, для которого характерно отсутствие кислорода, присутствие сероводорода и низкие температуры. The degradation of polyhydroxyalkanoate films was firstly studied in brackish Lake Shira at different depths, 3, 9, 13 and 20 meters, those corresponded to the layers of stratification. It is found that poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) and copolymer poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) with less crystallinity are destroyed with varying intensity. The maximum mass loss of polymer films and decrease in polymer molecular weight were registered at 3 m, in oxygenic epilimnion where temperature is the highest. The phenomenon of polymer films destruction were also found in the chemocline and anoxic low-temperature monimolimnion, at 20 m depth.

Abstract

Globally, lake surface water temperatures have warmed rapidly relative to air temperatures, but changes in deepwater temperatures and vertical thermal structure are still largely unknown. We have compiled the most comprehensive data set to date of long-term (1970–2009) summertime vertical temperature profiles in lakes across the world to examine trends and drivers of whole-lake vertical thermal structure. We found significant increases in surface water temperatures across lakes at an average rate of + 0.37 °C decade−1, comparable to changes reported previously for other lakes, and similarly consistent trends of increasing water column stability (+ 0.08 kg m−3 decade−1). In contrast, however, deepwater temperature trends showed little change on average (+ 0.06 °C decade−1), but had high variability across lakes, with trends in individual lakes ranging from − 0.68 °C decade−1 to + 0.65 °C decade−1. The variability in deepwater temperature trends was not explained by trends in either surface water temperatures or thermal stability within lakes, and only 8.4% was explained by lake thermal region or local lake characteristics in a random forest analysis.
