1. Photoinduced Current Transient Spectroscopy on Metal Halide Perovskites: Electron Trapping and Ion Drift.

Abstract

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are disruptive materials for a vast class of optoelectronic devices. The presence of electronic trap states has been a tough challenge in terms of characterization and thus mitigation. Many attempts based on electronic spectroscopies have been tested, but due to the mixed electronic-ionic nature of MHP conductivity, many experimental results retain a large ambiguity in resolving electronic and ionic charge contributions. Here we adapt a method, previously used in highly resistive inorganic semiconductors, called photoinduced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS) on lead bromide 2D-like ((PEA)2PbBr4) and standard 3D (MAPbBr3) MHP single crystals. We present two conceptually different outcomes of the PICTS measurements, distinguishing the different electronic and ionic contributions to the photocurrents based on the different ion drift of the two materials. Our experiments unveil deep level trap states on the 2D, ion-frozen (PEA)2PbBr4 and set new boundaries for the applicability of PICTS on 3D MHPs.

2. Conical spin order with chiral quadrupole helix in CsCuCl3

Abstract

Here we report a resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) study at the Cu L3 edge on the multi-chiral system CsCuCl3, exhibiting helical magnetic order in a chiral crystal structure. RXD is a powerful technique to disentangle electronic degrees of freedom due to its sensitivity to electric monopoles (charge), magnetic dipoles (spin), and electric quadrupoles (orbital). We characterize electric quadrupole moments around Cu ascribed to the unoccupied Cu 3d orbital, whose quantization axis is off the basal plane. Detailed investigation of magnetic reflections reveals additional sinusoidal modulations along the principal axis superimposed on the reported helical structure, i.e., a longitudinal conical (helical-butterfly) structure. The out-of-plane modulations imply significant spin-orbit interaction despite S = 1/2 of Cu2+., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The inherent ion migration in metal halide perovskite materials is known to induce deleterious and highly unstable dark currents in X‐ and γ‐ray detectors based on those compounds upon bias application. Dark current slow drift with time is identified as one of the major drawbacks for these devices to satisfy industrial requirements. Because dark current establishes the detectability limit, current evolution, and eventual growth may mask photocurrent signals produced by incoming X‐ray photons. Relevant information for detector assessment is ion‐related parameters such as ion concentration, ion mobility, and ionic space‐charge zones that are eventually built near the outer contacts upon detector biasing. A combined experimental (simple measurement of dark current transients) and 1D numerical simulation method is followed here using single‐crystal and microcrystalline millimeter‐thick methylammonium‐lead bromide that allows extracting ion mobility within the range of µion ≈ 10−7 cm2 V−1 s−1, while ion concentration values approximate Nion ≈ 1015 cm−3, depending on the perovskite crystallinity. 4. Field-Induced Quantum Phase Transitions in the Pressure-Tuned Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet CsCuCl3.

Abstract

We present the phase diagram of magnetic field vs pressure for a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CsCuCl3 surpassing the saturation field constructed by the magnetic-susceptibility measurements in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 55 T under pressures of up to 2.08 GPa. Up–up–down (UUD) and Y-coplanar phases were observed above 0.70 and 1.79 GPa, respectively. Based on theoretical calculations using the 1/S expansion method for the pressure dependence of the transition fields, we determined the parameters of the intrachain and interchain exchange interactions and easy-plane anisotropy. The emergence of the UUD and Y-coplanar phases is accompanied by a crossover from the semi-classical to the quantum spin regime in CsCuCl3, which is caused by a significant decrease in the ratio of intra- to interchain exchange interactions with increasing pressure. The temperature dependence of the magnetic phases at 2.08 GPa indicates that thermal fluctuations stabilized the UUD phase more effectively than the Y-coplanar and umbrella phases. Abstract

International audience; We will present the growth of several families of phosphates crystals, which exhibit remarkable properties such as high nonlinear optical efficiencies and piezoelectricity. As phosphate materials do not melt congruently due generally to partial decompositions at high temperatures, their crystal growth are performed by involving solvents. Thus, by taking several examples of phosphate crystal growths, we will introduce first different types of solution growth methods at low (close to room temperature) and high temperatures, (up to 1000°C), such as slow cooling, temperature gradient and flux methods. Indeed, we will illustrate all these techniques with examples taken from our studies at CNRS-Grenoble which include growth of hybrid organic inorganic salts, potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and crystals of the potassium titanyl phosphate family (KTP). Their crystal growths are motivated by the efficient properties for nonlinear optics to develop optical frequency conversion devices like optical parametric oscillators based on their non-centrosymmetric structures. In addition to these standard solution growth techniques, some more particular ones will be presented. Indeed, solution crystal growths, carried out under typical conditions at low supersaturations of the solutions (relative supersaturations σ of around 1%), exhibit low growth rates, less than 1mm/day. By applying an overheating and/or an ultrasonic treatment of the solution, it is possible to inhibit the spurious nucleation that take place at higher supersaturations. Thus, through this type of treatment of the solution during the crystal growth process, higher supersaturations can be applied, σ around 10-20%, and thus increase significantly the growth rates, over 1cm/day. These rapid crystal growths will be illustrated in the cases of potassium dihydrogen phosphate and hybrid organic-inorganic salts. Finally, hydrothermal techniques will be presented in the case of aluminum and gallium orthophosphate crystals, which are isomorphous to α-quartz. These crystals, exhibit promising piezoelectric properties for the development of resonators and physical sensors. Moreover, for all of these phosphate crystal growths, we will give examples of industrial processes, particularly for the growths of KDP, KTP and GaPO4 crystals.

32. Optimization of the Growth Conditions for High Quality CH3NH3PbBr3Hybrid Perovskite Single Crystals

Abstract

Methylammonium lead tribromide (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystals have gained growing attention in the past few years due to their use as a model material to investigate relevant intrinsic perovskite properties and for their potential applications for radiation detection. Their study has been facilitated by the ease and speed of fabrication of millimetric single crystals through a simple protocol of unseeded inverse temperature crystallization (ITC). In this study, we show that such growing conditions suffer from both insufficient reproducibility regarding crystal quality and low yield of single crystal obtention. In particular, we observed that more than half of the crystals obtained by this technique are polycrystals. The structural defects of the rest of the single crystals obtained have been characterized by cross polarized light, surface chemical etching to reveal dislocations, X-ray diffraction, ICP-MS, and H NMR. The results reveal a strong variability of crystals regarding internal strains and dislocation densities. Such defects can further severely impact the electronic transport properties of these materials. A more robust and reproducible protocol is proposed based on seeded growth combined with appropriate temperature profile selected from continuous crystal growth monitoring. A clear improvement in crystal quality is reached with higher transparency, minimized internal strains, and a low dislocation density in the range of 104–105cm–2.

33. Nucleation Control and Rapid Growth of KDP Crystals in Stationary Conditions

Abstract

Thanks to an improved control of the nucleation, an original crystal growth method operating in stationary thermodynamic conditions has been developed. It allows rapid growth of crystals at constant temperature and supersaturation. As a case study, large KH2PO4(KDP) crystals of high purity have been reproducibly obtained at constant temperatures and growth rates of 1 cm/day. Recorded X-ray diffraction topographs of as-grown crystals showed high crystal quality. This method opens the way for the rapid growth of high quality crystals for homogeneous intermediate compositions of solid solutions, doped crystals, and compounds exhibiting a weak solubility.

Abstract

International audience; We report a complete optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals. We studied the relative orientation between the dielectric and the crystallographic frames as a function of the wavelength and performed accurate phase-matching angles measurements for second harmonic generation, using a single crystal cut as a sphere. We also recorded polarized luminescence spectra of Nd:YCOB along the principal axes of the dielectric frame. For both crystals, we measured the gray-tracking and the thermo-optic properties as a function of temperature and wavelength using oriented slabs. Finally, we measured all their dielectric and electro-optic coefficients, as a function of frequency and wavelength.
