Abstract

Objectives:Increased blood pressure variability (BPV) has been associated with an increased risk of subclinical organ damage and cardiovascular events, independently of elevated average BP values. We aimed to investigate the association of BPV indices with micro-and macrovascular parameters, some of them not previously studied.Methods:We evaluated 344 individuals (233 never-treated/newly diagnosed hypertensive and 111 normotensive individuals). BPV was assessed using average real variability (ARV) during 24-h, daytime and night-time ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and systolic weighted standard deviation (wSD). Retinal microvascular diameter was assessed by nonmydriatic retinal photography. Arterial stiffness was assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV) and aortic augmentation index (AIx); subendocardial variability ratio (SEVR) was used as an index of myocardial perfusion. Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) was measured by ultrasound. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis.Results:After adjusting for potential confounders, PWV and cIMT were independently associated with ARV components in the total sample (P < 0.023 and P < 0.014, respectively). Within hypertensives only PWV and cIMT were independently associated with ARV components (P < 0.002 for PWV and P < 0.003 for cIMT). In contrast, within normotensives, only retinal parameters and AIx were associated with ARV components (P < 0.017 and P=0.013, respectively). None of the univariate correlations between vascular parameters and wSD remained significant after adjustment for potential confounders.Conclusion:Short-term BPV as assessed by ARV is independently associated with macrovascular parameters in untreated hypertensive patients, and with microvascular parameters in normotensive individuals. © 2023 Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. Abstract

This publication lays the foundation for the description of the Multiscale Boiling Experiment, which was conducted within two measurement campaigns on the International Space Station between 2019 and 2021. The experiment addresses fundamental questions about two-phase heat transfer during boiling processes. For this purpose, single or few subsequential bubbles are selectively ignited on a heated substrate using a short laser pulse. A detailed investigation of the phenomena is possible, as the boiling process is temporally slowed down and spatially enlarged in microgravity. Within the Multiscale Boiling Project, the undisturbed growth of the bubbles, the influence of a shear flow, and the influence of an electric field are investigated within the same test facility using FC-72 as working fluid. Within the project, thirteen research groups from eight countries are collaborating. Over 3000 data sets have been generated over an 11-month measurement period. In the context of this publication, besides the motivation and necessity of such investigations, the basic structure of the experiment, the objectives of the investigations, and the organization are described. Finally, first results of the investigations are presented. Abstract

In this article, the Mingei Online Platform is presented as an authoring platform for the representation of social and historic context encompassing a focal topic of interest. The proposed representation is employed in the contextualised presentation of a given topic, through documented narratives that support its presentation to diverse audiences. Using the obtained representation, the documentation and digital preservation of social and historical dimensions of Cultural Heritage are demonstrated. The implementation follows the Human-Centred Design approach and has been conducted under an iterative design and evaluation approach involving both usability and domain experts.

Abstract

Traditional crafts involve craft artefacts, materials and tools while encompassing craftsmanship as a form of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). In modern societies, the production of traditional crafts (TCs) has decreased due to the lack of interest and the reduction in the number of practitioners. In this context, we explore modern digital technologies to enhance a contemporary TCs object with digital stories that connect it to the history, society, traditions and values of Europe. Such stories can support new interest in TCs objects by enhancing their meaning, value and uniqueness. In this research work, we have created a handbag that functions both as an accessory and as a contemporary craft that can be experienced to reveal its unique history and identity.

Abstract

Heritage Crafts (HCs) involve tangible craft artefacts, materials, and tools and encompass traditional craftsmanship as a form of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Intangible HC dimensions include dexterity, know-how, and skilled use of tools, as well as identity and traditions of the communities in which craftsmanship is, or was, practiced. Despite their cultural significance, efforts towards HC digital representation and presentation are scattered. In the Mingei EU Innovation Action, an approach is developed towards systematising the representation of Heritage Crafts as Cultural Heritage for their preservation. The representation is expected to capture the wide spectrum of knowledge topics that HCs cover, from objects and their making, to hand gestures and tool uses that define craft motor skills, to the societal value, economic impact, and historical significance. In this article, we focus on the approach towards the creation of a knowledge and its representation. Examples and experiments are presented for two craft instances that are studied in this action.

Abstract

In 3D TV applications, the extraction of 3D representations of dynamic scenes from images plays a central role in the preparation of the presented visual content. This paper focuses on the stereo cue to the extraction of these representations and, in particular, on the recently developed family of volumetric approaches to stereo. Two methods are proposed that improve the accuracy of volumetric stereo approaches, which compare backprojections of image regions to establish stereo correspondences. The proposed methods are based on maximizing the utilization of the available image resolution, as well as, equalizing the sampled image area across pairs of image regions that are compared. Abstract

The main objective of the Image Indexing by Content network (I2Cnet) is to provide network-transparent content-based access to medical image archives based on a collection of interoperable Internet/intranet added-value services. This paper discusses I2Cnet, focusing on its service architecture paradigm. I2Cnet services such as image annotation, processing, description, and content-based retrieval, as well as the on-line collaboration service are presented. Exemplary user sessions are used to illustrate how virtual workspaces facilitate the interoperation of I2Cnet services, following the "network computer" approach to information management.
