We measure velocity offsets in the NaI $\lambda\lambda5890, 5896$ (Na D) interstellar medium absorption lines to track how neutral galactic winds change as their host galaxies evolve. Our sample of $\sim$80,000 SDSS spectra at $0.010 < z < 0.325$ includes starburst, post-starburst, and quiescent galaxies, forming an evolutionary sequence of declining star formation rate (SFR). We detect bulk flows across this sequence, mostly at higher host stellar masses($log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})>10$). Along this sequence, the fraction of outflows decreases ($76\pm2\%$ to $65\pm4\%$ to a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of $34\%$), and the mean velocity offset changes from outflowing to inflowing ($-84.6\pm5.9$ to $-71.6\pm11.4$ to $76.6\pm2.3\,km\,s^{-1}$). Even within the post-starburst sample, wind speed decreases with time elapsed since the starburst ended. These results reveal that outflows diminish as galaxies age. For post-starbursts, there is evidence for an AGN contribution, especially to the speediest outflows: 1) SFR declines faster in time than outflow velocity, a decoupling arguing against massive stellar feedback; 2) of the few outflows strong enough to escape the interstellar medium (9/105), three of the four hosts with measured emission lines are Seyfert galaxies. For disky starburst galaxies, however, the trends suggest flows out of the stellar disk plane (with outflow 1/2-opening angle $> 45$ degree) instead of from the nucleus: the wind velocity decreases as the disk becomes more edge-on, and the outflow fraction, constant at $\sim$90$\%$ for disk inclinations $i<45$ degree, steadily decreases from $\sim$90$%$ to 20$\%$ for $i>45$ degree., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We predict late-time optical/UV emission from tidal disruption events (TDEs) from our slim accretion disc model \citep{Wen20} and explore the impact of the black hole mass $M_\bullet$, black hole spin $a_\bullet$, and accretion disc size. We use these synthetic spectra to successfully fit the multi-band \emph{Swift} observations of ASASSN-14li at >350 days, setting only the host galaxy extinction and outer disc radius as free parameters and employing the $M_\bullet$, $a_\bullet$, disc inclination, and disc accretion rates derived from fitting 10 epochs of ASASSN-14li's X-ray spectra with the slim disc. To address the nature of the \emph{early}-time optical/UV emission, we consider two models: shock dissipation and reprocessing. We find that (1) the predicted late-time optical/UV colour (e.g., $u-w2$) is insensitive to black hole and disc parameters unless the disc spreads quickly; (2) a starburst galaxy extinction model is required to fit the data, consistent with ASASSN-14li's post-starburst host; (3) surprisingly, the outer disc radius is $\approx$2$\times$ the tidal radius and $\sim$constant at late times, showing that viscous spreading is slow or non-existent; (4) the shock model can be self-consistent if $M_\bullet \lesssim 10^{6.75}$M$_\odot$, i.e., on the low end of ASASSN-14li's $M_\bullet$ range ($10^{6.5-7.1}$M$_\odot$; 1$\sigma$ CL); larger black hole masses require disruption of an unrealistically massive progenitor star; (5) the gas mass needed for reprocessing, whether by a quasi-static or an outflowing layer, can be $<0.5$M$_\odot$, consistent with a (plausible) disruption of a solar-mass star., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. The molecular gas in galaxies traces both the fuel for star formation and the processes that can enhance or suppress star formation. Observations of the molecular gas state can thus point to when and why galaxies stop forming stars. In this study, we present ALMA observations of the molecular gas in galaxies evolving through the post-starburst phase. These galaxies have low current star formation rates, regardless of the SFR tracer used, with recent starbursts ending within the last 600 Myr. We present CO (3-2) observations for three post-starburst galaxies, and dense gas HCN/HCO+/HNC (1-0) observations for six (four new) post-starburst galaxies. The post-starbursts have low excitation traced by the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) up to CO (3-2), more similar to early-type than starburst galaxies. The low excitation indicates that lower density rather than high temperatures may suppress star formation during the post-starburst phase. One galaxy displays a blueshifted outflow traced by CO (3-2). MaNGA observations show that the ionized gas velocity is disturbed relative to the stellar velocity field, with a blueshifted component aligned with the molecular gas outflow, suggestive of a multiphase outflow. Low ratios of HCO+/CO, indicating low fractions of dense molecular gas relative to the total molecular gas, are seen throughout post-starburst phase, except for the youngest post-starburst galaxy considered here. These observations indicate that the impact of any feedback or quenching processes may be limited to low excitation and weak outflows in the cold molecular gas during the post-starburst phase., Comment: 33 pages, 24 figures, 4 tables, ApJ in press

We present a tabulated version of our slim disk model for fitting tidal disruption events (TDEs). We create a synthetic X-ray spectral library by ray-tracing stationary general relativistic slim disks and including gravitational redshift, Doppler, and lensing effects self-consistently. We introduce the library to reduce computational expense and increase access for fitting future events. Fitting requires interpolation between the library spectra; the interpolation error in the synthetic flux is generally $<10\%$ (it can rise to $40\%$ when the disk is nearly edge-on). We fit the X-ray spectra of the TDEs ASASSN-14li and ASASSN-15oi, successfully reproducing our earlier constraints on black hole mass $M_\bullet$ and spin $a_\bullet$ from full on-the-fly ray-tracing. We use the library to fit mock observational data to explore the degeneracies among parameters, finding that 1) hotter thermal disk and edge-on inclination angle spectra offer tighter constraints on $M_\bullet$ and $a_\bullet$; 2) the constraining power of spectra on $M_\bullet$ and $a_\bullet$ increases as a power-law with the number of X-ray counts, and the index of the power law is higher for hotter thermal disk spectra; 3) multi-epoch X-ray spectra partially break the degeneracy between $M_\bullet$ and $a_\bullet$; 4) the time-dependent level of X-ray absorption can be constrained from spectral fitting. Post-starburst (PSB), or 'E+A', galaxies represent a rapid transitional phase between major, gas-rich mergers and gas-poor, quiescent early-type galaxies. Surprisingly, many PSBs have been shown to host a significant interstellar medium (ISM), despite theoretical predictions that the majority of star-forming gas should be expelled in AGN- or starburst-driven outflows. To-date, the resolved properties of this surviving ISM have remained unknown. We present high resolution ALMA continuum and CO(2$-$1) observations in six gas- and dust-rich PSBs, revealing for the first time the spatial and kinematic structure of their ISM on sub-kpc scales. We find extremely compact molecular reservoirs, with dust and gas surface densities rivaling those found in (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies. We observe spatial and kinematic disturbances in all sources, with some also displaying disk-like kinematics. Estimates of the internal turbulent pressure in the gas exceed those of normal star-forming disks by at least 2 orders of magnitude, and rival the turbulent gas found in local interacting galaxies, such as the Antennae. Though the source of this high turbulent pressure remains uncertain, we suggest that the high incidence of tidal disruption events (TDEs) in PSBs could play a role. The star formation in these PSBs' turbulent central molecular reservoirs is suppressed, forming stars only 10% as efficiently as starburst galaxies with similar gas surface densities. "The fall" of star formation in these galaxies was not precipitated by complete gas expulsion or redistribution. We present an analysis of the intracluster light in the Frontier Field Cluster MACS J1149.5+2223 (z=0.544), which combines new and archival Hubble WFC3/IR imaging to provide continuous radial coverage out to 2.8 Mpc from the brightest cluster galaxy. Employing careful treatment of potential systematic biases and using data at the largest radii to determine the background sky level, we reconstruct the surface brightness profile out to a radius of 2 Mpc. This radius is the largest to which the intracluster light (ICL) has been measured for an individual cluster. Within this radius, we measure a total luminosity of 1.5e13 Lsun for the brightest cluster galaxy plus ICL light. From the profile and its logarithmic slope, we identify the transition from the brightest cluster galaxy to ICL at r~70 kpc. Remarkably, we also detect an inflection in the profile centered in the 1.2-1.7 Mpc (0.37-0.52 r200m) radial bin, a signature of an infall caustic in the stellar distribution. Based upon the shape and strength of the feature, we interpret it as potentially being at the splashback radius, although the radius is smaller than theoretical predictions. If this is the splashback radius, then it is the first such detection in the ICL and the first detection of the splashback radius for an individual cluster. We simultaneously and successfully fit the multi-epoch X-ray spectra of the tidal disruption event (TDE) 3XMM J215022.4-055108 using a modified version of our relativistic slim disk model that now accounts for angular momentum losses from radiation. We explore the effects of different disk properties and of uncertainties in the spectral hardening factor fc and redshift z on the estimation of the black hole mass M and spin a. Across all choices of theoretical priors, we constrain M to less than 2.2e4 Ms at 1 sigma confidence. Assuming that the TDE host is a star cluster associated with the adjacent, brighter, barred lenticular galaxy at z=0.055, we constrain M and a to be (1.75+0.45-0.05)e4 Ms and 0.8+0.12-0.02, respectively, at 1 sigma confidence. The high, but sub-extremal, spin suggests that, if this intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) has grown significantly since formation, it has acquired its last e-fold in mass in a way incompatible with both the standard and chaotic limits of gas accretion. Ours is the first clear IMBH with a spin measurement. As such, this object represents a novel laboratory for astro-particle physics; its M and a place tight limits on the existence of ultralight bosons, ruling out those with masses 1.0e-15 to 1.0e-16 eV., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure and 5 tables. We develop a new model for X-ray emission from tidal disruption events (TDEs), applying stationary general relativistic ``slim disk'' accretion solutions to supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and then ray-tracing the photon trajectories from the image plane to the disk surface, including gravitational redshift, Doppler, and lensing effects self-consistently. We simultaneously and successfully fit the multi-epoch XMM-Newton X-ray spectra for two TDEs: ASASSN-14li and ASASSN-15oi. We test explanations for the observed, unexpectedly slow X-ray brightening of ASASSN-15oi, including delayed disk formation and variable obscuration by a reprocessing layer. We propose a new mechanism that better fits the data: a ``Slimming Disk'' scenario in which accretion onto an edge-on disk slows, reducing the disk height and exposing more X-rays from the inner disk to the sightline over time.For ASASSN-15oi, we constrain the SMBH mass to $4.0^{+2.5}_{-3.1} \times 10^6M_\odot$. For ASASSN-14li, the SMBH mass is $10^{+1}_{-7}\times 10^6M_\odot$ and the spin is $>0.3$. For both TDEs, our fitted masses are consistent with independent estimates; for ASASSN-14li, application of the external mass constraint narrows our spin constraint to $>0.85$. The mass accretion rate of ASASSN-14li decays slowly, as $\propto t^{-1.1}$, perhaps due to inefficient debris circularization. Over $\approx$1100 days, its SMBH has accreted $\Delta M \approx 0.17 M_\odot$, implying a progenitor star mass of $> 0.34 M_\odot$, i.e., no ``missing energy problem.'' For both TDEs, the hydrogen column density declines to the host galaxy plus Milky Way value after a few hundred days, suggesting a characteristic timescale for the depletion or removal of obscuring gas., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent studies of Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) have revealed unexpected correlations between the TDE rate and the large-scale properties of the host galaxies. In this review, we present the host galaxy properties of all TDE candidates known to date and quantify their distributions. We consider throughout the differences between observationally-identified types of TDEs and differences from spectroscopic control samples of galaxies. We focus here on the black hole and stellar masses of TDE host galaxies, their star formation histories and stellar populations, the concentration and morphology of the optical light, the presence of AGN activity, and the extra-galactic environment of the TDE hosts. We summarize the state of several possible explanations for the links between the TDE rate and host galaxy type. We present estimates of the TDE rate for different host galaxy types and quantify the degree to which rate enhancement in some types results in rate suppression in others. We discuss the possibilities for using TDE host galaxies to assist in identifying TDEs in upcoming large transient surveys and possibilities for TDE observations to be used to study their host galaxies., Comment: 55 pages, 13 Figures, 7 Tables. We explore the galaxy structure of four tidal disruption event (TDE) host galaxies on 30 pc to kpc scales using HST WFC3 multi-band imaging. The star formation histories of these hosts are diverse, including one post-starburst galaxy (ASASSN-14li), two hosts with recent weak starbursts (ASASSN-14ae and iPTF15af), and one early type (PTF09ge). Compared to early type galaxies of similar stellar masses, the TDE hosts have higher central surface brightnesses and stellar mass surface densities on 30-100 pc scales. The TDE hosts do not show the large, kpc-scale tidal disruptions seen in some post-starburst galaxies; the hosts have low morphological asymmetries similar to those of early type galaxies. The lack of strong asymmetries are inconsistent with a recent major (~1:1 mass) merger, although minor ($\lesssim$1:3) mergers are possible. Given the time elapsed since the end of the starbursts in the three post-burst TDE hosts and the constraints on the merger mass ratios, it is unlikely that a bound supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) has had time to coalesce. The TDE hosts have low central (<140 pc) ellipticities compared to early type galaxies. The low central ellipticities disfavor a strong radial anisotropy as the cause for the enhanced TDE rate, although we cannot rule out eccentric disks at the scale of the black hole gravitational radius of influence (~1 pc). These observations suggest that the high central stellar densities are a more important driver than SMBHBs or radial anisotropies in increasing the TDE rate in galaxies with recent starbursts., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 22 pages, 12 figures

The occurrence of planetary nebulae (PNe) in globular clusters (GCs) provides an excellent chance to study low-mass stellar evolution in a special (low-metallicity, high stellar density) environment. We report a systematic spectroscopic survey for the [O{\sc iii}] 5007 emission line of PNe in 1469 Virgo GCs and 121 Virgo ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs), mainly hosted in the giant elliptical galaxies M87, M49, M86, and M84. We detected zero PNe in our UCD sample and discovered one PN ($M_{5007} = -4.1$ mag) associated with an M87 GC. We used the [O{\sc iii}] detection limit for each GC to estimate the luminosity-specific frequency of PNe, $\alpha$, and measured $\alpha$ in the Virgo cluster GCs to be $\alpha \sim 3.9_{-0.7}^{+5.2}\times 10^{-8}\mathrm{PN}/L_\odot$. $\alpha$ in Virgo GCs is among the lowest values reported in any environment, due in part to the large sample size, and is 5--6 times lower than that for the Galactic GCs. We suggest that $\alpha$ decreases towards brighter and more massive clusters, sharing a similar trend as the binary fraction, and the discrepancy between the Virgo and Galactic GCs can be explained by the observational bias in extragalactic surveys toward brighter GCs. This low but non-zero efficiency in forming PNe may highlight the important role played by binary interactions in forming PNe in GCs. We argue that a future survey of less massive Virgo GCs will be able to determine whether PN production in Virgo GCs is governed by internal process (mass, density, binary fraction), or is largely regulated by external environment., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures. We derive dust masses ($M_{\rm dust}$) from the spectral energy distributions of 58 post-starburst galaxies (PSBs). There is an anticorrelation between specific dust mass ($M_{\rm dust}$/$M_{\star}$) and the time elapsed since the starburst ended, indicating that dust was either destroyed, expelled, or rendered undetectable over the $\sim$1 Gyr after the burst. The $M_{\rm dust}$/$M_{\star}$ depletion timescale, 205$^{+58}_{-37}$ Myr, is consistent with that of the CO-traced $M_{\rm H_2}/M_{\star}$, suggesting that dust and gas are altered via the same process. Extrapolating these trends leads to the $M_{\rm dust}/M_{\star}$ and $M_{\rm H_2}/M_{\star}$ values of early-type galaxies (ETGs) within 1-2 Gyr, a timescale consistent with the evolution of other PSB properties into ETGs. Comparing $M_{\rm dust}$ and $M_{\rm H_2}$ for PSBs yields a calibration, log $M_{\rm H_2}$ = 0.45 log $M_{\rm dust}$ + 6.02, that allows us to place 33 PSBs on the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) plane, $\Sigma \rm SFR-\Sigma M_{\rm H_2}$. Over the first $\sim$200-300 Myr, the PSBs evolve down and off of the KS relation, as their star formation rate (SFR) decreases more rapidly than $M_{\rm H_2}$. Afterwards, $M_{\rm H_2}$ continues to decline whereas the SFR levels off. These trends suggest that the star-formation efficiency bottoms out at 10$^{-11}\ \rm yr^{-1}$ and will rise to ETG levels within 0.5-1.1 Gyr afterwards. The SFR decline after the burst is likely due to the absence of gas denser than the CO-traced H$_2$. The mechanism of the $M_{\rm dust}/M_{\star}$ and$M_{\rm H_2}/M_{\star}$ decline, whose timescale suggests active galactic nucleus (AGN) or low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) feedback, may also be preventing the large CO-traced molecular gas reservoirs from collapsing and forming denser star forming clouds., Comment: v1: 29 pages, 13 figures, to be published in ApJ. v2: Figure 6 and 7 fixed; more references added

Because core-collapse supernovae are the explosions of massive stars, which have relatively short lifetimes, they occur almost exclusively in galaxies with active star formation. On the other hand, the Type Ibn supernova PS1-12sk exploded in an environment much more typical of thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernovae: on the outskirts of the brightest elliptical galaxy in a galaxy cluster. The lack of any obvious star formation at that location presented a challenge to models of Type Ibn supernovae as the explosions of very massive Wolf-Rayet stars. Here we present a supplementary search for star formation at the site of PS1-12sk, now that the supernova has faded, via deep ultraviolet imaging of the host cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope. We do not detect any ultraviolet emission within 1 kpc of the supernova location, which allows us deepen the limit on star formation rate by an order of magnitude compared to the original study on this event. In light of this new limit, we discuss whether the progenitors of Type Ibn supernovae can be massive stars and what reasonable alternatives have been proposed.

A nuclear transient detected in a post-starburst galaxy or other quiescent galaxy with strong Balmer absorption is likely to be a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE). Identifying such galaxies within the planned survey footprint of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)---before a transient is detected---will make TDE classification immediate and follow-up more efficient. Unfortunately, spectra for identifying most such galaxies are unavailable, and simple photometric selection is ineffective; cutting on "green valley" UV/optical/IR colors produces samples that are highly contaminated and incomplete. Here we propose a new strategy using only photometric optical/UV/IR data from large surveys. Applying a machine learning Random Forest classifier to a sample of ~400k SDSS galaxies with GALEX and WISE photometry, including 13,592 quiescent Balmer-strong galaxies, we achieve 53-61% purity and 8-21% completeness, given the range in redshift. For the subset of 1299 post-starburst galaxies, we achieve 63-73% purity and 5-12% completeness. Given these results, the range of likely TDE and supernova rates, and that 36-75% of TDEs occur in quiescent Balmer-strong hosts, we estimate that 13-99% of transients observed in photometrically-selected host galaxies will be TDEs and that we will discover 119-248 TDEs per year with LSST. Using our technique, we present a new catalog of 67,484 candidate galaxies expected to have a high TDE rate, drawn from the SDSS, Pan-STARRS, DES, and WISE photometric surveys. This sample is 3.5x larger than the current SDSS sample of similar galaxies, thereby providing a new path forward for transient science and galaxy evolution studies., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Detailed modeling of the recent star formation histories (SFHs) of post-starburst (or "E+A") galaxies is impeded by the degeneracy between the time elapsed since the starburst ended (post-burst age), the fraction of stellar mass produced in the burst (burst strength), and the burst duration. To resolve this issue, we combine GALEX ultraviolet photometry, SDSS photometry and spectra, and new stellar population synthesis models to fit the SFHs of 532 post-starburst galaxies. In addition to an old stellar population and a recent starburst, 48% of the galaxies are best fit with a second recent burst. Lower stellar mass galaxies (log M$_\star$/M$_\odot<10.5$) are more likely to experience two recent bursts, and the fraction of their young stellar mass is more strongly anti-correlated with their total stellar mass. Applying our methodology to other, younger post-starburst samples, we identify likely progenitors to our sample and examine the evolutionary trends of molecular gas and dust content with post-burst age. We discover a significant (4$\sigma$) decline, with a 117-230 Myr characteristic depletion time, in the molecular gas to stellar mass fraction with the post-burst age. The implied rapid gas depletion rate of 2-150 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ cannot be due to current star formation, given the upper limits on the current SFRs in these post-starbursts. Nor are stellar winds or SNe feedback likely to explain this decline. Instead, the decline points to the expulsion or destruction of molecular gas in outflows, a possible smoking gun for AGN feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Post-starburst or "E+A" galaxies are rapidly transitioning from star-forming to quiescence. While the current star formation rate of post-starbursts is already at the level of early type galaxies, we recently discovered that many have large CO-traced molecular gas reservoirs consistent with normal star forming galaxies. These observations raise the question of why these galaxies have such low star formation rates. Here we present an ALMA search for the denser gas traced by HCN (1--0) and HCO+ (1--0) in two CO-luminous, quiescent post-starburst galaxies. Intriguingly, we fail to detect either molecule. The upper limits are consistent with the low star formation rates and with early-type galaxies. The HCN/CO luminosity ratio upper limits are low compared to star-forming and even many early type galaxies. This implied low dense gas mass fraction explains the low star formation rates relative to the CO-traced molecular gas and suggests the state of the gas in post-starburst galaxies is unusual, with some mechanism inhibiting its collapse to denser states. We conclude that post-starbursts galaxies are now quiescent because little dense gas is available, in contrast to the significant CO-traced lower density gas reservoirs that still remain., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

With a large, unique spectroscopic survey in the fields of 28 galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses, we identify groups of galaxies in the 26 adequately-sampled fields. Using a group finding algorithm, we find 210 groups with at least five member galaxies; the median number of members is eight. Our sample spans redshifts of 0.04 $\le z_{grp} \le$ 0.76 with a median of 0.31, including 174 groups with $0.1 < z_{grp} < 0.6$. Groups have radial velocity dispersions of 60 $\le \sigma_{grp} \le$ 1200 km s$^{-1}$ with a median of 350 km s$^{-1}$. We also discover a supergroup in field B0712+472 at $z =$ 0.29 consisting of three main groups. We recover groups similar to $\sim$ 85% of those previously reported in these fields within our redshift range of sensitivity and find 187 new groups with at least five members. The properties of our group catalog, specifically 1) the distribution of $\sigma_{grp}$, 2) the fraction of all sample galaxies that are group members, and 3) the fraction of groups with significant substructure, are consistent with those for other catalogs. The distribution of group virial masses agrees well with theoretical expectations. Of the lens galaxies, 12 of 26 (46%) (B1422+231, B1600+434, B2114+022, FBQS J0951+2635, HE0435-1223, HST J14113+5211, MG0751+2716, MGJ1654+1346, PG 1115+080, Q ER 0047-2808, RXJ1131-1231, and WFI J2033-4723) are members of groups with at least five galaxies, and one more (B0712+472) belongs to an additional, visually identified group candidate. There are groups not associated with the lens that still are likely to affect the lens model; in six of 25 (24%) fields (excluding the supergroup), there is at least one massive ($\sigma_{grp} \ge$ 500 km s$^{-1}$) group or group candidate projected within 2$^{\prime}$ of the lens., Comment: 87 pages, 8 figures, a version of this was published in ApJ

Strong gravitational lensing provides an independent measurement of the Hubble parameter ($H_0$). One remaining systematic is a bias from the additional mass due to a galaxy group at the lens redshift or along the sightline. We quantify this bias for more than 20 strong lenses that have well-sampled sightline mass distributions, focusing on the convergence $\kappa$ and shear $\gamma$. In 23% of these fields, a lens group contributes a $\ge$1% convergence bias; in 57%, there is a similarly significant line-of-sight group. For the nine time delay lens systems, $H_0$ is overestimated by 11$^{+3}_{-2}$% on average when groups are ignored. In 67% of fields with total $\kappa \ge$ 0.01, line-of-sight groups contribute $\gtrsim 2\times$ more convergence than do lens groups, indicating that the lens group is not the only important mass. Lens environment affects the ratio of four (quad) to two (double) image systems; all seven quads have lens groups while only three of 10 doubles do, and the highest convergences due to lens groups are in quads. We calibrate the $\gamma$-$\kappa$ relation: $\log(\kappa_{\rm{tot}}) = (1.94 \pm 0.34) \log(\gamma_{\rm{tot}}) + (1.31 \pm 0.49)$ with a rms scatter of 0.34 dex. Shear, which, unlike convergence, can be measured directly from lensed images, can be a poor predictor of $\kappa$; for 19% of our fields, $\kappa$ is $\gtrsim 2\gamma$. The rate of tidal disruption events (TDEs), $R_\text{TDE}$, is predicted to depend on stellar conditions near the super-massive black hole (SMBH), which are on difficult-to-measure sub-parsec scales. We test whether $R_\text{TDE}$ depends on kpc-scale global galaxy properties, which are observable. We concentrate on stellar surface mass density, $\Sigma_{M_\star}$, and velocity dispersion, $\sigma_v$, which correlate with the stellar density and velocity dispersion of the stars around the SMBH. We consider 35 TDE candidates, with and without known X-ray emission. The hosts range from star-forming to quiescent to quiescent with strong Balmer absorption lines. The last (often with post-starburst spectra) are overrepresented in our sample by a factor of $35^{+21}_{-17}$ or $18^{+8}_{-7}$, depending on the strength of the H$\delta$ absorption line. For a subsample of hosts with homogeneous measurements, $\Sigma_{M_\star}=10^9$-$10^{10}~{\rm M_\odot / kpc^2}$, higher on average than for a volume-weighted control sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies with similar redshifts and stellar masses. This is because: (1) most of the TDE hosts here are quiescent galaxies, which tend to have higher $\Sigma_{M_\star}$ than the star-forming galaxies that dominate the control, and (2) the star-forming hosts have higher average $\Sigma_{M_\star}$ than the star-forming control. There is also a weak suggestion that TDE hosts have lower $\sigma_v$ than for the quiescent control. Assuming that $R_{\rm TDE}\propto \Sigma_{M_\star}^\alpha \times \sigma_v^\beta$, and applying a statistical model to the TDE hosts and control sample, we estimate $\hat{\alpha}=0.9 \pm 0.2$ and $\hat{\beta}=-1.0 \pm 0.6$. We present a combined strong and weak lensing analysis of the J085007.6+360428 (J0850) field, which was selected by its high projected concentration of luminous red galaxies and contains the massive cluster Zwicky 1953. Using Subaru/Suprime-Cam $BVR_{c}I_{c}i^{\prime}z^{\prime}$ imaging and MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy, we first perform a weak lensing shear analysis to constrain the mass distribution in this field, including the cluster at $z = 0.3774$ and a smaller foreground halo at $z = 0.2713$. We then add a strong lensing constraint from a multiply-imaged galaxy in the imaging data with a photometric redshift of $z \approx 5.03$. Unlike previous cluster-scale lens analyses, our technique accounts for the full three-dimensional mass structure in the beam, including galaxies along the line of sight. In contrast with past cluster analyses that use only lensed image positions as constraints, we use the full surface brightness distribution of the images. This method predicts that the source galaxy crosses a lensing caustic such that one image is a highly-magnified "fold arc", which could be used to probe the source galaxy's structure at ultra-high spatial resolution ($< 30$ pc). We calculate the mass of the primary cluster to be $\mathrm{M_{vir}} = 2.93_{-0.65}^{+0.71} \times 10^{15}~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ with a concentration of $\mathrm{c_{vir}} = 3.46_{-0.59}^{+0.70}$, consistent with the mass-concentration relation of massive clusters at a similar redshift. The large mass of this cluster makes J0850 an excellent field for leveraging lensing magnification to search for high-redshift galaxies, competitive with and complementary to that of well-studied clusters such as the HST Frontier Fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 14 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables

Matter near a gravitational lens galaxy or projected along the line of sight (LOS) can affect strong lensing observables by more than contemporary measurement errors. We simulate lens fields with realistic three-dimensional mass configurations (self-consistently including voids), and then fit mock lensing observables with increasingly complex lens models to quantify biases and uncertainties associated with different ways of treating the lens environment (ENV) and LOS. We identify the combination of mass, projected offset, and redshift that determines the importance of a perturbing galaxy for lensing. Foreground structures have a stronger effect on the lens potential than background structures, due to nonlinear effects in the foreground and downweighting in the background. There is dramatic variation in the net strength of ENV/LOS effects across different lens fields; modeling fields individually yields stronger priors for $H_0$ than ray tracing through $N$-body simulations. Models that ignore mass outside the lens yield poor fits and biased results. Adding external shear can account for tidal stretching from galaxies at redshifts $z \ge z_{\rm lens}$, but it requires corrections for external convergence and cannot reproduce nonlinear effects from foreground galaxies. Using the tidal approximation is reasonable for most perturbers as long as nonlinear redshift effects are included. Even then, the scatter in $H_0$ is limited by the lens profile degeneracy. Asymmetric image configurations produced by highly elliptical lens galaxies are less sensitive to the lens profile degeneracy, so they offer appealing targets for precision lensing analyses in future surveys like LSST and Euclid., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures

Compact groups of galaxies provide a unique environment to study the evolution of galaxies amid frequent gravitational encounters. These nearby groups have conditions similar to those in the earlier universe when galaxies were assembled and give us the opportunity to witness hierarchical formation in progress. To understand how the compact group environment affects galaxy evolution, we examine the gas and dust in these groups. We present new single-dish GBT neutral hydrogen (HI) observations of 30 compact groups and define a new way to quantify the group HI content as the HI-to-stellar mass ratio of the group as a whole. We compare the HI content with mid-IR indicators of star formation and optical [g-r] color to search for correlations between group gas content and star formation activity of individual group members. Quiescent galaxies tend to live in HI-poor groups, and galaxies with active star formation are more commonly found in HI-rich groups. Intriguingly, we also find "rogue" galaxies whose star formation does not correlate with group HI content. In particular, we identify three galaxies (NGC 2968 in RSCG 34, KUG 1131+202A in RSCG 42, and NGC 4613 in RSCG 64) whose mid-IR activity is discrepant with the HI. We speculate that this mismatch between mid-IR activity and HI content is a consequence of strong interactions in this environment that can strip HI from galaxies and abruptly affect star-formation. Ultimately, characterizing how and on what timescales the gas is processed in compact groups will help us understand the interstellar medium in complex, dense environments similar to the earlier Universe., Comment: Accepted to AJ

We present the spectroscopic redshift catalog from a wide-field survey of the fields of 28 galaxy-mass strong gravitational lenses. We discuss the acquisition and reduction of the survey data, collected over 40 nights of 6.5m MMT and Magellan time, employing four different multi-object spectrographs. We determine that no biases are introduced by combining datasets obtained with different instrument/spectrograph combinations. Special care is taken to determine redshift uncertainties using repeat observations. The redshift catalog consists of 9768 new and unique galaxy redshifts. 82.4% of the catalog redshifts are between z=0.1 and z=0.7, and the catalog median redshift is z=0.36. The data from this survey will be used to study the lens environments and line-of-sight structures to gain a better understanding of the effects of large scale structure on lens statistics and lens-derived parameters., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. Certain configurations of massive structures projected along the line of sight maximize the number of detections of gravitationally lensed $z\sim10$ galaxies. We characterize such lines of sight with the \'etendue $\sigma_\mu$, the area in the source plane magnified over some threshold $\mu$. We use the Millennium I and Millennium XXL cosmological simulations to determine the frequency of high $\sigma_\mu$ beams on the sky, their properties, and efficient selection criteria. We define the best beams as having $\sigma_{\mu>3} >2000$ arcsec$^2$, for a $z\sim10$ source plane, and predict $477 \pm 21$ such beams on the sky. The total mass in the beam and $\sigma_{\mu>3}$ are strongly correlated. After controlling for total mass, we find a significant residual correlation between $\sigma_{\mu>3}$ and the number of cluster-scale halos ($>10^{14} M_\odot h^{-1}$) in the beam. Beams with $\sigma_{\mu>3} >2000$ arcsec$^2$, which should be best at lensing $z\sim10$ galaxies, are ten times more likely to contain multiple cluster-scale halos than a single cluster-scale halo. Beams containing an Abell 1689-like massive cluster halo often have additional structures along the line of sight, including at least one additional cluster-scale ($M_{200}>10^{14}M_\odot h^{-1}$) halo 28% of the time. In strong gravitational lens systems, the light bending is usually dominated by one main galaxy, but may be affected by other mass along the line of sight (LOS). Shear and convergence can be used to approximate the contributions from less significant perturbers (e.g. those that are projected far from the lens or have a small mass), but higher order effects need to be included for objects that are closer or more massive. We develop a framework for multiplane lensing that can handle an arbitrary combination of tidal planes treated with shear and convergence and planes treated exactly (i.e., including higher order terms). This framework addresses all of the traditional lensing observables including image positions, fluxes, and time delays to facilitate lens modelling that includes the non-linear effects due to mass along the LOS. It balances accuracy (accounting for higher-order terms when necessary) with efficiency (compressing all other LOS effects into a set of matrices that can be calculated up front and cached for lens modelling). We identify a generalized multiplane mass sheet degeneracy, in which the effective shear and convergence are sums over the lensing planes with specific, redshift-dependent weighting factors., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

Lines of sight with multiple, projected, cluster-scale halos have high total masses and complex lens plane interactions that can boost the area of magnification, or etendue, making detection of faint background sources more likely than elsewhere. To identify these new "compound" cosmic telescopes, we have found lines-of-sight with the highest integrated mass densities, as traced by the projected concentrations of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs). We use 1151 MMT Hectospec spectra to derive preliminary magnification maps for two such lines of sight with total mass exceeding ~ 3 x 10$^{15}$ Msun -- J0850+3604 (0850) and J1306+4632 (1306). We identify 2-3 group- and cluster-scale halos in each beam over 0.1 < z < 0.7, all of which are well-traced by LRGs. In Subaru Suprime-Cam imaging of beam 0850, we discover serendipitously a candidate multiply-imaged V-dropout source at z = 5.03, whose location is consistent with the critical curves for a source plane of $z_s$ = 5.03 predicted by our mass model. Incorporating the position of the candidate multiply-imaged galaxy as a constraint on the critical curve location in 0850 narrows the 68% confidence band on lens plane area with mu > 10 for a source plane of $z_s$ = 10 to [1.8, 4.2] square arcminutes, comparable to that of MACS 0717+3745 and El Gordo, two of the most powerful known single cluster lenses. The 68% confidence intervals on the lens plane area with mu > 10 for 1306 are [2.3, 6.7] square arcminutes. We measure the baryons contained in both the stellar and hot gas components for twelve galaxy clusters and groups at z~0.1 with M=1-5e14 Msun. This paper improves upon our previous work through the addition of XMM data, enabling measurements of the total mass and masses of each major baryonic component --- ICM, intracluster stars, and stars in galaxies --- for each system. We recover a relation for the stellar mass versus halo mass consistent with our previous result. We confirm that the partitioning of baryons between the stellar and hot gas components is a strong function of M500; the fractions of total mass in stars and X-ray gas within r500 scale as M500^-0.45 and M500^0.26, respectively. We also confirm that the combination of the BCG and intracluster stars is an increasingly important contributor to the stellar baryon budget in lower halo masses. We find a weak, but statistically significant, dependence of the total baryon fraction upon halo mass, scaling as M500^0.16. For M500>2e14, the total baryon fractions within r500 are on average 18% (7%) below the Universal value from the WMAP7 (Planck) analysis. For Planck, the difference between the Universal value and cluster baryon fractions is less than the systematic uncertainties associated with M500. The total baryon fractions exhibit significant scatter, particularly at M500<2e14 Msun where they range from 60-90% (65-100%) of the Universal value for WMAP7 (Planck). The ratio of the stellar-to-gas mass within r500, a measure of star formation efficiency, strongly decreases with M500. The fact that this relation remains tight at low mass implies that the larger scatter in the total baryon fractions at these masses arises from either true scatter in the total baryon content or observational scatter in M500, rather than late-time physical processes such as redistribution of gas to beyond r500. The best gravitational lenses for detecting distant galaxies are those with the largest mass concentrations and the most advantageous configurations of that mass along the line of sight. Our new method for finding such gravitational telescopes uses optical data to identify projected concentrations of luminous red galaxies (LRGs). LRGs are biased tracers of the underlying mass distribution, so lines of sight with the highest total luminosity in LRGs are likely to contain the largest total mass. We apply this selection technique to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and identify the 200 fields with the highest total LRG luminosities projected within a 3.5' radius over the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.7. The redshift and angular distributions of LRGs in these fields trace the concentrations of non-LRG galaxies. These fields are diverse; 22.5% contain one known galaxy cluster and 56.0% contain multiple known clusters previously identified in the literature. Thus, our results confirm that these LRGs trace massive structures and that our selection technique identifies fields with large total masses. We present a study of the hot gas and stellar content of 5 optically-selected poor galaxy clusters, including a full accounting of the contribution from intracluster light (ICL) and a combined hot gas and hydrostatic X-ray mass analysis with XMM observations. We find weighted mean stellar (including ICL), gas and total baryon mass fractions within r500 of 0.026+/-0.003, 0.070+/-0.005 and 0.096+/-0.006, respectively, at a corresponding weighted mean M500 of (1.08_{-0.18}^{+0.21}) x 10^14 Msun. Even when accounting for the intracluster stars, 4 out of 5 clusters show evidence for a substantial baryon deficit within r500, with baryon fractions (f_bary) between 50+/-6 to 59+/-8 per cent of the Universal mean level (i.e. Omega_b / Omega_m); the remaining cluster having f_bary = 75+/-11 per cent. For the 3 clusters where we can trace the hot halo to r500 we find no evidence for a steepening of the gas density profile in the outskirts with respect to a power law, as seen in more massive clusters. We find that in all cases, the X-ray mass measurements are larger than those originally published on the basis of the galaxy velocity dispersion (sigma) and an assumed sigma-M500 relation, by a factor of 1.7-5.7. Despite these increased masses, the stellar fractions (in the range 0.016-0.034, within r500) remain consistent with the trend with mass published by Gonzalez, Zaritsky & Zabludoff (2007), from which our sample is drawn., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Isolated compact groups of galaxies (CGs) present a range of dynamical states, group velocity dispersions, and galaxy morphologies with which to study galaxy evolution, particularly the properties of gas both within the galaxies and in the intragroup medium. As part of a large, multiwavelength examination of CGs, we present an archival study of diffuse X-ray emission in a subset of nine Hickson compact groups observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We find that seven of the groups in our sample exhibit detectable diffuse emission. However, unlike large-scale emission in galaxy clusters, the diffuse features in the majority of the detected groups are linked to the individual galaxies, in the form of both plumes and halos likely as a result of star formation or AGN activity, as well as in emission from tidal features. Unlike previous studies from earlier X-ray missions, HCGs 31, 42, 59, and 92 are found to be consistent with the Lx-T relationship from clusters within the errors, while HCGs 16 and 31 are consistent with the cluster Lx-sigma relation, though this is likely coincidental given that the hot gas in these two systems is largely due to star formation. We find that Lx increases with decreasing group HI to dynamical-mass ratio with tentative evidence for a dependance in X-ray luminosity on HI morphology whereby systems with intragroup HI indicative of strong interactions are considerably more X-ray luminous than passively evolving groups. We also find a gap in the Lx of groups as a function of the total group specific star formation rate. Our findings suggest that the hot gas in these groups is not in hydrostatic equilibrium and these systems are not low-mass analogs of rich groups or clusters, with the possible exception of HCG 62., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the gravitational lensing properties of lines of sight containing multiple cluster-scale halos, motivated by their ability to lens very high-redshift (z ~ 10) sources into detectability. We control for the total mass along the line of sight, isolating the effects of distributing the mass among multiple halos and of varying the physical properties of the halos. Our results show that multiple-halo lines of sight can increase the magnified source-plane region compared to the single cluster lenses typically targeted for lensing studies, and thus are generally better fields for detecting very high-redshift sources. The configurations that result in optimal lensing cross sections benefit from interactions between the lens potentials of the halos when they overlap somewhat on the sky, creating regions of high magnification in the source plane not present when the halos are considered individually. The effect of these interactions on the lensing cross section can even be comparable to changing the total mass of the lens from 10^15 M_sun to 3x10^15 M_sun. The gain in lensing cross section increases as the mass is split into more halos, provided that the lens potentials are projected close enough to interact with each other. A nonzero projected halo angular separation, equal halo mass ratio, and high projected halo concentration are the best mass configurations, whereas projected halo ellipticity, halo triaxiality, and the relative orientations of the halos are less important. We demonstrate how the Fundamental Manifold (FM) can be used to cross-calibrate distance estimators even when those "standard candles" are not found in the same galaxy. Such an approach greatly increases the number of distance measurements that can be utilized to check for systematic distance errors and the types of estimators that can be compared. Here we compare distances obtained using SN Ia, Cepheids, surface brightness fluctuations, the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch, circumnuclear masers, eclipsing binaries, RR Lyrae stars, and the planetary nebulae luminosity functions. We find no significant discrepancies (differences are < 2 sigma) between distance methods, although differences at the ~10% level cannot yet be ruled out. The potential exists for significant refinement because the data used here are heterogeneous B-band magnitudes that will soon be supplanted by homogeneous, near-IR magnitudes. We illustrate the use of FM distances to 1) revisit the question of the metallicity sensitivity of various estimators, confirming the dependence of SN Ia distances on host galaxy metallicity, and 2) provide an alternative calibration of H_0 that replaces the classical ladder approach in the use of extragalactic distance estimators with one that utilizes data over a wide range of distances simultaneously., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The role of environmentally induced gas stripping in driving galaxy evolution in groups remains poorly understood. Here we present extensive Chandra and Very Large Array mosaic observations of the hot and cold interstellar medium within the members of the nearby, X-ray bright NGC 2563 group, a prime target for studies of the role of gas stripping and interactions in relatively small host halos. Our observations cover nearly all group members within a projected radius of 1.15 Mpc (~1.4 R_vir) of the group center, down to a limiting X-ray luminosity and HI mass of 3e39 erg/s and 2e8 M_sun, respectively. The X-ray data are consistent with efficient ram pressure stripping of the hot gas halos of early-type galaxies near the group core, but no X-ray tails are seen and the limited statistics preclude strong conclusions. The HI results suggest moderate HI mass loss from the group members when compared to similar field galaxies. Six of the 20 HI-detected group members show HI evidence of ongoing interactions with other galaxies or with the intragroup medium. Suggestive evidence is further seen for galaxies with close neighbors in position-velocity space to show relatively low HI content, consistent with tidal removal of HI. The results thus indicate removal of both hot and cold gas from the group members via a combination of ram pressure stripping and tidal interactions. We also find that 16 of the 20 HI detections occur on one side of the group, reflecting an unusual morphological segregation whose origin remains unclear., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. We explore whether global observed properties, specifically half-light radii, mean surface brightness, and integrated stellar kinematics, suffice to unambiguously differentiate galaxies from star clusters, which presumably formed differently and lack dark matter halos. We find that star clusters lie on the galaxy scaling relationship referred to as the Fundamental Manifold (FM), on the extension of a sequence of compact galaxies, and so conclude that there is no simple way to differentiate star clusters from ultra-compact galaxies. By extending the validity of the FM over a larger range of parameter space and a wider set of objects, we demonstrate that the physics that constrains the resulting baryon and dark matter distributions in stellar systems is more general than previously appreciated. The generality of the FM implies 1) that the stellar spatial distribution and kinematics of one type of stellar system do not arise solely from a process particular to that set of systems, such as violent relaxation for elliptical galaxies, but are instead the result of an interplay of all processes responsible for the generic settling of baryons in gravitational potential wells, 2) that the physics of how baryons settle is independent of whether the system is embedded within a dark matter halo, and 3) that peculiar initial conditions at formation or stochastic events during evolution do not ultimately disturb the overall regularity of baryonic settling. We also utilize the relatively simple nature of star clusters to relate deviations from the FM to the age of the stellar population and find that stellar population models systematically and significantly over predict the mass-to-light ratios of old, metal-rich clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Using new photometric and spectroscopic data in the fields of nine strong gravitational lenses that lie in galaxy groups, we analyze the effects of both the local group environment and line-of-sight galaxies on the lens potential. We use Monte Carlo simulations to derive the shear directly from measurements of the complex lens environment, providing the first detailed independent check of the shear obtained from lens modeling. We account for possible tidal stripping of the group galaxies by varying the fraction of total mass apportioned between the group dark matter halo and individual group galaxies. The environment produces an average shear of gamma = 0.08 (ranging from 0.02 to 0.17), significant enough to affect quantities derived from lens observables. However, the direction and magnitude of the shears do not match those obtained from lens modeling in three of the six 4-image systems in our sample (B1422, RXJ1131, and WFI2033). The source of this disagreement is not clear, implying that the assumptions inherent in both the environment and lens model approaches must be reconsidered. If only the local group environment of the lens is included, the average shear is gamma = 0.05 (ranging from 0.01 to 0.14), indicating that line-of-sight contributions to the lens potential are not negligible. We isolate the effects of various theoretical and observational uncertainties on our results. Of those uncertainties, the scatter in the Faber-Jackson relation and error in the group centroid position dominate. We present MIPS observations of the cluster A3266. About 100 spectroscopic cluster members have been detected at 24 micron. The IR luminosity function in A3266 is very similar to that in the Coma cluster down to the detection limit L_IR~10^43 ergs/s, suggesting a universal form of the bright end IR LF for local rich clusters with M~10^15 M_sun. The shape of the bright end of the A3266-Coma composite IR LF is not significantly different from that of nearby field galaxies, but the fraction of IR-bright galaxies (SFR > 0.2M_sun/yr) in both clusters increases with cluster-centric radius. The decrease of the blue galaxy fraction toward the high density cores only accounts for part of the trend; the fraction of red galaxies with moderate SFRs (0.2 < SFR < 1 M_sun/yr) also decreases with increasing galaxy density. These results suggest that for the IR bright galaxies, nearby rich clusters are distinguished from the field by a lower star-forming galaxy fraction, but not by a change in L*_IR. The composite IR LF of Coma and A3266 shows strong evolution when compared with the composite IR LF of two z~0.8 clusters, MS 1054 and RX J0152, with L*_IR \propto (1+z)^{3.2+/-0.7},Phi*_IR \propto (1+z)^{1.7+/-1.0}. This L*_IR evolution is indistinguishable from that in the field, and the Phi*_IR evolution is stronger, but still consistent with that in the field. The similarity of the evolution of bright-end IR LF in very different cluster and field environments suggests either this evolution is driven by the mechanism that works in both environments, or clusters continually replenish their star-forming galaxies from the field, yielding an evolution in the IR LF that is similar to the field. To determine the relative contributions of galactic and intracluster stars to the enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM), we present X-ray surface brightness, temperature, and Fe abundance profiles for a set of twelve galaxy clusters for which we have extensive optical photometry. Assuming a standard IMF and simple chemical evolution model scaled to match the present-day cluster early-type SN Ia rate, the stars in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) plus the intracluster stars (ICS) generate 31^{+11}_{-9}%, on average, of the observed ICM Fe within r_{500} (~ 0.6 times r_{200}, the virial radius). An alternate, two-component SN Ia model (including both prompt and delayed detonations) produces a similar BCG+ICS contribution of 22^{+9}_{-9}%. Because the ICS typically contribute 80% of the BCG+ICS Fe, we conclude that the ICS are significant, yet often neglected, contributors to the ICM Fe within r_{500}. However, the BCG+ICS fall short of producing all the Fe, so metal loss from stars in other cluster galaxies must also contribute. By combining the enrichment from intracluster and galactic stars, we can account for all the observed Fe. These models require a galactic metal loss fraction (0.84^{+0.11}_{-0.14}) that, while large, is consistent with the metal mass not retained by galactic stars. The SN Ia rates, especially as a function of galaxy environment and redshift, remain a significant source of uncertainty in further constraining the metal loss fraction. For example, increasing the SN Ia rate by a factor of 1.8 -- to just within the 2 sigma uncertainty for present-day cluster early-type galaxies -- allows the combined BCG + ICS + cluster galaxy model to generate all the ICM Fe with a much lower galactic metal loss fraction (~ 0.35)., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables. Using a sample of 57,377 star-forming galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we study the relationship between gas-phase oxygen abundance and environment in the local Universe. We find that there is a strong relationship between metallicity and environment such that more metal-rich galaxies favor regions of higher overdensity. Furthermore, this metallicity-density relation is comparable in strength to the color-density relation along the blue cloud. After removing the mean dependence of environment on color and luminosity, we find a significant residual trend between metallicity and environment that is largely driven by galaxies in high-density regions, such as groups and clusters. We discuss the potential source of this relationship between metallicity and local galaxy density in the context of feedback models, with special attention paid to quantifying the impact of environment on the scatter in the mass-metallicity relation. To better understand the mechanism or mechanisms that lead to AGN activity today, we measure the X-ray AGN fraction in a new sample of nearby clusters and examine how it varies with galaxy properties, projected cluster-centric radius, and cluster velocity dispersion. We present new wide-field Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of Abell 85, Abell 754 and the background cluster Abell 89B out to their virial radii. Out of seventeen X-ray sources associated with galaxies in these clusters, we classify seven as X-ray AGN with L_{X,B} > 10^{41} erg/s. Only two of these would be classified as AGN based on their optical spectra. We combine these observations with archival data to create a sample of X-ray AGN from six z < 0.08 clusters and find that 3.4+1.1/-0.8% of M_R < -20 galaxies host X-ray AGN with L_{X,B} > 10^{41} erg/s. We find that more X-ray AGN are detected in more luminous galaxies and attribute this to larger spheriods in more luminous galaxies and increased sensitivity to lower Eddington-rate accretion from black holes in those spheroids. At a given X-ray luminosity limit, more massive black holes can be accreting less efficiently, yet still be detected. If interactions between galaxies are the principal drivers of AGN activity, then the AGN fraction should be higher in lower velocity dispersion clusters and the outskirts of clusters. However, the tendency of the most massive and early-type galaxies to lie in the centers of the richest clusters could dilute such trends. We find that all classes of galaxies, ranging from disks to spheroids and from dwarf spheroidals to brightest cluster galaxies, lie on a two dimensional surface within the space defined by the logarithms of the half-light radius, r_e, mean surface brightness within r_e, I_e, and internal velocity, V^2 = (1/2)v_c^2 + sigma^2, where v_c is the rotational velocity and sigma is the velocity dispersion. If these quantities are expressed in terms of kpc, L_solar/pc^2, and km/s, then log r_e - log V^2 + log I_e + log Upsilon_e + 0.8 = 0, where we provide a fitting function for Upsilon_e, the mass-to-light ratio within r_e in units of M_solar/L_solar, that depends only on V and I_e. The scatter about this surface for our heterogeneous sample of 1925 galaxies is small (< 0.1 dex) and could be as low as ~ 0.05 dex, or 10%. This small scatter has three possible implications for how gross galactic structure is affected by internal factors, such as stellar orbital structure, and by external factors, such as environment. These factors either 1) play no role beyond generating some of the observed scatter, 2) move galaxies along the surface, or 3) balance each other to maintain this surface as the locus of galactic structure equilibria. We cast the behavior of Upsilon_e in terms of the fraction of baryons converted to stars, eta, and the concentration of those stars within the dark matter halo, xi = R_{200}/r_e. We derive eta = 1.9 x 10^{-5} (L/L^*) Upsilon_* V^{-3} and xi = 1.4 V/r_e. Finally, we present and discuss the distributions of eta and xi for the full range of galaxies. For systems with internal velocities comparable to that of the Milky Way (149 < V < 163 km/s), eta = 0.14 +- 0.05, and xi is, on average, ~ 5 times greater for spheroids than for disks. We discuss the near-infrared properties of the nuclei in the 11 merging galaxies of the Toomre sequence, based on high spatial resolution J, H, and K imaging data using NICMOS onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The observations are less affected by dust extinction than our previous HST/WFPC2 observations and offer higher spatial resolution than existing ground-based near-IR data. We see a marginal trend for the nuclei to become bluer with advancing merger stage, which we attribute to a dispersal of dust at late times in the merging process. Our data also indicate a statistically significant trend for the nuclei in the sequence to become more luminous, within an aperture of fixed physical size and after correcting for dust extinction, with advancing merger stage. We derive K-band surface brightness profiles for those nuclei for which the morphology allows a meaningful isophotal analysis, and fit the profiles with a ``Nuker law'' for comparison with other samples of galaxies observed with HST. The majority of the nuclei have steep profiles that can be characterized as power-law type. In general, the Toomre sequence galaxies tend to have steeper profiles and higher central luminosity surface densities than E/S0's. We derive V-K color profiles for the nuclei to further address this possibility, but find that the large amounts of dust extinction complicate their interpretation. Overall, our results are consistent with the generic predictions of N-body simulations of spiral galaxy mergers. If left to evolve and fade for several Gyrs, it is possible that the properties of the Toomre sequence nuclei would resemble theproperties of the nuclei of normal E/S0 galaxies. We determine the contribution of stars in galaxies, intracluster stars, and the intracluster medium to the total baryon budget in nearby galaxy clusters and groups. We find that the baryon mass fraction (f_b) within r500 is constant for systems with M500 between 6e13 and 1e15 Msun. Although f_b is lower than the WMAP value, the shortfall is on the order of both the observational systematic uncertainties and the depletion of baryons within r500 that is predicted by simulations. The data therefore provide no compelling evidence for undetected baryonic components, particularly any that vary in importance with cluster mass. A unique feature of the current analysis is direct inclusion of the contribution of intracluster light (ICL) in the baryon budget. The increase in X-ray gas mass fraction with increasing total mass is entirely accounted for by a decrease in the total stellar mass fraction, supporting the argument that the behavior of both the stellar and X-ray gas components is dominated by a decrease in star formation efficiency in more massive environments. Within just the stellar component, the fraction of the total stellar luminosity in the BCG and ICL decreases as velocity dispersion increases, suggesting that the BCG+ICL component, and in particular the dominant ICL component, grows less efficiently in higher mass environments. The degree to which this behavior arises from our sample selection, which favored systems with central, giant elliptical galaxies, remains unclear. A more robust result is the identification of low mass groups with large BCG+ICL components, demonstrating that the creation of intracluster stars does not require a massive cluster environment. The fundamental manifold (FM), an extension of the fundamental plane formalism, incorporates all spheroid-dominated stellar systems from dwarf ellipticals up to the intracluster stellar populations of galaxy clusters by accounting for the continuous variation of the mass-to-light ratio within the effective radius r_e with scale. Here, we find that Local Group dwarf spheroidal and dwarf elliptical galaxies, which probe the FM relationship roughly one decade lower in r_e than previous work, lie on the extrapolation of the FM. When combined with the earlier data, these Local Group dwarfs demonstrate the validity of the empirical manifold over nearly four orders of magnitude in r_e. The continuity of the galaxy locus on the manifold and, more specifically, the overlap on the FM of dwarf ellipticals like M 32 and dwarf spheroidals like Leo II, implies that dwarf spheroidals belong to the same family of spheroids as their more massive counterparts. The only significant outliers are Ursa Minor and Draco. We explore whether the deviation of these two galaxies from the manifold reflects a breakdown in the coherence of the empirical relationship at low luminosities or rather the individual dynamical peculiarities of these two objects. [abridged] We present the analysis of the spectroscopic and photometric catalogues of 11 X-ray luminous clusters at z=0.07-0.16 from the Las Campanas / Anglo-Australian Telescope Rich Cluster Survey. Our spectroscopic dataset consists of over 1600 galaxy cluster members, of which two thirds are outside r_200. We assign cluster membership using a detailed mass model and expand on our previous work on the cluster colour-magnitude relation where membership was inferred statistically. We confirm that the modal colours of galaxies on the colour magnitude relation become progressively bluer with increasing radius and decreasing local galaxy density. Interpreted as an age effect, we hypothesize that these trends in galaxy colour should be reflected in mean Hdelta equivalent width. We confirm that passive galaxies in the cluster increase in Hdelta line strength as dHdelta / d r_p = 0.35 +/- 0.06. A variation of star formation rate, as measured by [OII], with increasing local density of the environment is discernible and is shown to be in broad agreement with previous studies from 2dFGRS and SDSS. We find that clusters at z~0.1 are less active than their higher redshift analogues. We also investigate unusual populations of blue and very red nonstarforming galaxies and we suggest that the former are likely to be the progenitors of galaxies which will lie on the colour-magnitude relation, while the colours of the latter possibly reflect dust reddening. The cluster galaxies at large radii consist of both backsplash ones and those that are infalling to the cluster for the first time. We make a comparison to the field population at z~0.1 and examine broad differences between the two populations. We present a unifying empirical description of the structural and kinematic properties of all spheroids embedded in dark matter halos. We find that the stellar spheroidal components of galaxy clusters, which we call cluster spheroids (CSphs) and which are typically one hundred times the size of normal elliptical galaxies, lie on a "fundamental plane" as tight as that defined by ellipticals (rms in effective radius of ~0.07), but that has a different slope. The slope, as measured by the coefficient of the log(sigma) term, declines significantly and systematically between the fundamental planes of ellipticals, brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), and CSphs.We attribute this decline primarily to a continuous change in M_e/L_e, the mass-to-light ratio within the effective radius r_e, with spheroid scale. The magnitude of the slope change requires that it arises principally from differences in the relative distributions of luminous and dark matter, rather than from stellar population differences such as in age and metallicity. By expressing the M_e/L_e term as a function of sigma in the simple derivation of the fundamental plane and requiring the behavior of that term to mimic the observed nonlinear relationship between log(M_e/L_e) and log(sigma), we simultaneously fit a 2-D manifold to the measured properties of dwarf ellipticals, ellipticals, BCGs, and CSphs. The combined data have an rms scatter in log(r_e) of 0.114 (0.099 for the combination of Es, BCGs, and CSphs), which is modestly larger than each fundamental plane has alone, but which includes the scatter introduced by merging different studies done in different filters by different investigators. This ``fundamental manifold'' fits the structural and kinematic properties of spheroids that span a factor of 100 in sigma and 1000 in r_e. (ABRIDGED), Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Using high resolution cosmological simulations, we study hydrogen and helium gravitational cooling radiation. We focus on the HeII cooling lines, which arise from gas with a different temperature history (T_max ~ 10^5K) than HI line emitting gas. We examine whether three major atomic cooling lines, HI 1216A, HeII 1640A and HeII 304A are observable, finding that HI 1216A and HeII 1640A cooling emission at z=2-3 are potentially detectable with deep narrow band (R>100) imaging and/or spectroscopy from the ground. While the expected strength of HI 1216A cooling emission depends strongly on the treatment of the self-shielded phase of the IGM in the simulations, our predictions for the HeII 1640A line are more robust because the HeII 1640A emissivity is negligible below T~10^4.5 K and less sensitive to the UV background. Although HeII 1640A cooling emission is fainter than HI 1216A by at least a factor of 10 and, unlike HI 1216A, might not be resolved spatially with current observational facilities, it is more suitable to study gas accretion in the galaxy formation process because it is optically thin and less contaminated by the recombination lines from star-forming galaxies. The HeII 1640A line can be used to distinguish among mechanisms for powering the so-called "Lyman alpha blobs" -- including gravitational cooling radiation, photoionization by stellar populations, and starburst-driven superwinds -- because (1) HeII 1640A emission is limited to very low metallicity (log(Z/Z_sun) < -5.3) and Population III stars, and (2) the blob's kinematics are probed unambiguously through the HeII 1640A line width, which, for cooling radiation, is narrower (sigma < 400 km/s) than typical wind speeds., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. We present a detailed U-V CMR analysis for 3 local (z<0.06) Abell (A85, A496, A754) galaxy clusters, with 637 total spectroscopic members down to 0.1L^star. We find that these clusters have similar CMRs with a mean color of U-V=1.4 at M_V=-20+5logh, and narrow limits of intrinsic color scatter [0.047,0.079] and slope [-0.094,-0.075]. The core cluster population of red galaxies follow CMRs that are in close agreement with that of Coma. We test how sensitive the CMR uniformity is to variations in color aperture size and sample selection, and find slightly wider limits of scatter [0.047,0.112] and slope [-0.104,-0.054]. This upper limit for U-V scatter is consistent with z_form>1.2 for the bulk of the stars in red cluster galaxies, and a maximum age spread of 5.2 Gyr. We note that none of the slopes exhibit a break as claimed by Metcalf et al., and using colors from equal-light apertures does not remove the CMR slope. Our findings expand the single Coma data point and provide a much-needed z=0 base-line for comparisons to high-z cluster U-V CMRs. The CMR scatter range in low-z clusters is consistent with that found in high-z clusters, suggesting little evolution in the stars of red cluster galaxies out to z~1. To identify the most recently accreted galaxies, we divide each cluster's membership into 3 galaxy populations based on CMR-relative U-V color. Blue galaxies make up 18-23% of each cluster's galaxy counts above 0.1L^star. We test the hypothesis that CMR-relative color represents rough cluster infall times and find that blue galaxies are spatially, kinematically, and morphologically distinct from red cluster members. These distinctions provide further evidence that bluer members are indeed more recently accreted field spirals as expected in an hierarchical universe. We explore the contribution of intracluster stars (ICS) to the chemical enrichment history of the intracluster medium (ICM). In contrast to scenarios in which all the metals originate in cluster galaxies and are then transported into the ICM, intracluster stars enrich the ICM in situ, thereby contributing 100% of their supernovae ejecta directly into the ICM. Modeling the ICS as an ancient, single burst stellar population with a normal initial mass function, we generate ICM iron abundances in the range of the observed values of several tenths solar. Large observational and theoretical uncertainties preclude us from concluding that the intracluster stars are the primary contributor of metals to the ICM in general. However, for the two clusters in our sample, and one from the literature, for which all of the required observational constraints exist, we are able to reproduce between half and all of the ICM iron. Due to the ubiquity of intracluster stars in clusters and their direct connection with the ICM, we conclude that all models of the chemical enrichment history and energy budget of the ICM should account for the impact of the ICS., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication by ApJ Letters. We present a detailed analysis of the surface brightness distribution of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in each of 24 galaxy clusters at 0.03-r_e relation than that of the elliptical fundamental plane. We interpret this outer component as a population of intracluster stars tracing the cluster potential. The two components are strongly aligned (|\Delta\theta|<10\degr) in roughly 40% of the clusters. When they are not aligned, the components tend toward high degrees of misalignment, suggesting that accretion of infalling material may change the orientation of some BCGs for a time. The extent of the outer component and its similar elongation to published cluster galaxy distributions indicates that the evolution of the intracluster light is tied to the cluster as a whole rather than to the BCG., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures (1 color), accepted to ApJ; replaces submitted version
