Search

The previously-unknown nucleus 20Al has been observed for the first time by detecting its in-flight decays. Tracking trajectories of all decay products with silicon micro-strip detectors allowed for a conclusion that 20Al is unbound with respect to three-proton (3p) emission. The 3p-decay energy of 20Al ground state has been determined to be 1.93(+0.11,-0.09) MeV through a detailed study of angular correlations of its decay products, 17Ne+p+p+p. This value is much smaller in comparison with the predictions inferred from the isospin symmetry by using the known energy of its mirror nucleus 20N, which indicates a possible mirror symmetry violation in the structure of 3p emitters. Such an isospin symmetry breaking is supported by the calculations of the continuum embedded theoretical frameworks, describing the observed 20Al ground state as an 1p s-wave state with a spin-parity of 1-, which contradicts to the spin-parity (2-) of the 20N ground state. The 20Al ground state decays by sequential 1p-2p emission via intermediate ground state of 19Mg, which is the first observed case of daughter two-proton radioactivity following 1p decay of the parent state., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, to be submitted to APS

We report on the observation of previously-unknown isotope $^{21}$Al, the first unbound aluminum isotope located beyond the proton dripline. The $^{21}$Al nucleus decays by one-proton (1p) emission, and its in-flight decays were detected by tracking trajectories of all decay products with micro-strip silicon detectors. The 1p-emission processes were studied by analyses of the measured angular correlations of decay products $^{20}$Mg+p. The 1p-decay energies of ground and low-lying excited states of $^{21}$Al, its mass excess and proton separation energy value $S_p$=$-1.1(1)$ MeV were determined., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

The extremely neutron-rich system $^{6}$H was studied in the direct $^2\text{H}(^8\text{He},{^4\text{He}})^{6}$H transfer reaction with a $26 A$ MeV secondary $^{8}$He beam. The measured missing mass spectrum shows a broad bump at $\sim 4-8$ MeV above the $^3$H+$3n$ decay threshold. This bump can be interpreted as a broad resonant state in $^{6}$H at $6.8(5)$ MeV. The population cross section of such a presumably $p$-wave state (or may be few overlapping states) in the energy range from 4 to 8 MeV is $d\sigma/d\Omega_{\text{c.m.}} \simeq 190^{+40}_{-80}$ $\mu$b/sr in the angular range $5^{\circ}<\theta_{\text{c.m.}}<16^{\circ}$. The obtained missing mass spectrum is practically free of the $^{6}$H events below 3.5 MeV ($d\sigma/d\Omega_{\text{c.m.}} \lesssim 5$ $\mu$b/sr in the same angular range). The steep rise of the $^{6}$H missing mass spectrum at $\sim 3$ MeV allows to derive the lower limit for the possible resonant-state energy in $^{6}$H to be $4.5(3)$ MeV. According to the paring energy estimates, such a $4.5(3)$ MeV resonance is a realistic candidate for the $^{6}$H ground state (g.s.). The obtained results confirm that the decay mechanism of the $^{7}$H g.s.\ (located at 2.2 MeV above the $^{3}$H+$4n$ threshold) is the "true" (or simultaneous) $4n$ emission. The resonance energy profiles and the momentum distributions of fragments of the sequential $^{6}$H$ \,\rightarrow \, ^5$H(g.s.)+$n\, \rightarrow \, ^3$H+$3n$ decay were analyzed by the theoretically-updated direct four-body-decay and sequential-emission mechanisms. The measured momentum distributions of the $^{3}$H fragments in the $^{6}$H rest frame indicate very strong "dineutron-type" correlations in the $^{5}$H ground state decay., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures

We experimentally demonstrate fabrication of tunable high contrast periodic fishnet metasurfaces with 3 um period on 200 nm thick Ge2Sb2Te5 films sputted onto glass and sapphire substrates using direct laser writing technique. We find that the use of sapphire substrate provides better accuracy of metasurface segments due to high thermal conductivity. The advantages of the demonstrated method consist in its simplicity, rapidity, robustness, and the ability of tuning of fabricated structures. This is of crucial importance for the creation of robust and tunable metasurfaces for applications in the field of telecommunications and information processing., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The extremely neutron-rich system $^{7}$H was studied in the direct $^2$H($^8$He,$^3$He)$^7$H transfer reaction with a 26 AMeV secondary $^{8}$He beam [Bezbakh et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 022502]. The missing mass spectrum and center-of-mass (c.m.) angular distributions of $^{7}$H, as well as the momentum distribution of the $^{3}$H fragment in the $^{7}$H frame, were constructed. In addition to the investigation reported in Ref. [Bezbakh et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 022502], we carried out another experiment with the same beam but a modified setup, which was cross-checked by the study of the $^2$H($^{10}$Be,$^3$He$)^{9}$Li reaction. A solid experimental evidence is provided that two resonant states of $^{7}$H are located in its spectrum at 2.2(5) and 5.5(3) MeV relative to the $^3$H+4$n$ decay threshold. Also, there are indications that the resonant states at 7.5(3) and 11.0(3) MeV are present in the measured $^{7}$H spectrum. Based on the energy and angular distributions, obtained for the studied $^2$H($^8$He,$^3$He)$^7$H reaction, the weakly populated 2.2(5) MeV peak is ascribed to the $^7$H ground state. It is highly plausible that the firmly ascertained 5.5(3) MeV state is the $5/2^+$ member of the $^7$H excitation $5/2^+$-$3/2^+$ doublet, built on the $2^+$ configuration of valence neutrons. The supposed 7.5 MeV state can be another member of this doublet, which could not be resolved in Ref. [Bezbakh et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 022502]. Consequently, the two doublet members appeared in the spectrum of $^{7}$H in [Bezbakh et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 022502] as a single broad 6.5 MeV peak., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

The method of asymptotic normalization coefficients is a standard approach for studies of two-body non-resonant radiative capture processes in nuclear astrophysics. This method suggests a fully analytical description of the radiative capture cross section in the low-energy region of the astrophysical interest. We demonstrate how this method can be generalized to the case of three-body $2p$ radiative captures. It was found that an essential feature of this process is the highly correlated nature of the capture. This reflects the complexity of three-body Coulomb continuum problem. The low-energy behavior of the strength function for the $1^-$ soft dipole excitation in $^{6}$He is studied theoretically. Use of very large basis sizes and well-grounded extrapolation procedures allows to move to energies as small as 1 keV, at which the low-energy asymptotic behavior of the E1 strength function seems to be achieved. It is found that the low-energy behavior of the strength function is well described in the effective three-body "dynamical dineutron model". The astrophysical rate for the $\alpha$+$n$+$n \rightarrow ^6$He+$\gamma$ is calculated. Comparison with the previous calculations is performed., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

The "soft dipole" E1 strength function is calculated for the transition from the $^{6}$He $0^+$ ground state to the $1^-$ continuum $^{4}$He+$n$+$n$. The calculations were performed within the hyperspherical harmonics formalism. The sensitivity of the results to the $^{6}$He ground state structure and to final state interactions, are analyzed. The large-basis calculations show the reliably converged results for soft dipole strength function and for momentum correlations of the $^{6}\mbox{He} \rightarrow \, ^{4}$He+$n$+$n$ dissociation products. Within the hyperspherical harmonics approach the three-body problem is reduced to a motion of one effective particle in a "strongly deformed" field, which is described in coupled-channel formalism. This method is especially suited to studies of phenomena characterized by genuine three-body dynamics, e.g. Borromean haloes and true three-body decays. The reduction of the hyperspherical equations set to a single-channel Schr\"odinger equation provides the basis for the use of the standard quasiclassical expression for calculations of widths for true three-body decays. We demonstrate that the quasiclassical approach by itself is quite precise in application to typical profiles of the three-body effective potentials. However, the reduction to single-channel formalism leads to significant overestimation of the two-proton width $\Gamma_{2p}$. This is demonstrated by the example of the $^{17}$Ne first excited $3/2^-$ state decay, questioning, however, the applicability of such an approximation in general., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The $^7$H system was populated in the $^2$H($^8$He,$^3$He)$^7$H reaction with a 26 AMeV $^8$He beam. The $^{7}$H missing mass energy spectrum, the $^{3}$H energy and angular distributions in the $^7$H decay frame were reconstructed. The $^7$H missing mass spectrum shows a peak which can be interpreted either as unresolved $5/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ doublet or one of these states at 6.5(5) MeV. The data also provide indications on the $1/2^+$ ground state of $^7$H located at 2.0(5) MeV with quite a low population cross section of $\sim 10$ $\mu$b/sr within angular range $\theta_{\text{cm}} \simeq 6^{\circ} - 30^{\circ}$.

The most-remote from stability isotope $^{31}$K, which is located four atomic mass units beyond the proton drip line, has been observed. It is unbound in respect to three-proton (${3p}$) emission, and its decays have been detected in flight by measuring trajectories of all decay products using micro-strip detectors. The $3p$-emission processes have been studied by means of angular correlations $^{28}$S+3$p$ and the respective decay vertexes. The energies of the previously-unknown ground and excited states of $^{31}$K have been determined. This provides its $3p$ separation-energy value $S_{3p}$ of $-4.6(2)$ MeV. Upper half-life limits of 10 ps of the observed $^{31}$K states have been derived from distributions of the measured decay vertexes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Mechanism of simultaneous non-sequential four-neutron ($4n$) emission (or `true' $4n$-decay) has been considered in phenomenological five-body approach. This approach is analogous to the model of the direct decay to the continuum often applied to $2n$- and $2p$-decays. It is demonstrated that $4n$-decay fragments should have specific energy and angular correlations reflecting strong spatial correlations of `valence' nucleons orbiting in their $4n$-precursors. Due to the Pauli exclusion principle, the valence neutrons are pushed to the symmetry-allowed configurations in the $4n$-precursor structure, which causes a `Pauli focusing' effect. Prospects of the observation of the Pauli focusing have been considered for the $4n$-precursors $^7$H and $^{28}$O. Fingerprints of their nuclear structure or/and decay dynamics are predicted.

Coulomb and nuclear dissociation of $^{17}$Ne on light and heavy targets are studied theoretically. The dipole E1 strength function is determined in a broad energy range including energies of astrophysical interest. Dependence of the strength function on different parameters of the $^{17}$Ne ground state structure and continuum dynamics is analyzed in a three-body model. The discovered dependence plays an important role for studies of the strength functions for the three-body E1 dissociation and radiative capture. The constraints on the $[s^2]/[d^2]$ configuration mixing in $^{17}$Ne and on $p$-wave interaction in the $^{15}$O+$p$ channel are imposed based on experimental data for $^{17}$Ne Coulomb dissociation on heavy target., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Prospects of experimental studies of argon and chlorine isotopes located far beyond the proton dripline are studied by using systematics and cluster models. The deviations from the widespread systematics observed in $^{28,29}$Cl and $^{29,30}$Ar have been theoretically substantiated, and analogous deviations predicted for the lighter chlorine and argon isotopes. The limits of nuclear structure existence are predicted for Ar and Cl isotopic chains, with $^{26}$Ar and $^{25}$Cl found to be the lightest sufficiently long-living nuclear systems. By simultaneous measurements of protons and $\gamma$-rays following decays of such systems as well as their $\beta$-delayed emission, an interesting synergy effect may be achieved, which is demonstrated by the example of $^{30}$Cl and $^{31}$Ar ground state studies. Such synergy effect may be provided by the new EXPERT setup (EXotic Particle Emission and Radioactivity by Tracking), being operated inside the fragment separator and spectrometer facility at GSI, Darmstadt., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. The proton-unbound argon and chlorine isotopes have been studied by measuring trajectories of their decay-in-flight products by using a tracking technique with micro-strip detectors. The proton ($1p$) and two-proton ($2p$) emission processes have been detected in the measured angular correlations "heavy-fragment"+$p$ and "heavy-fragment"+$p$+$p$, respectively. The ground states of the previously unknown isotopes $^{30}$Cl and $^{28}$Cl have been observed for the first time, providing the $1p$-separation energies $S_p$ of $-0.48(2)$ and $-1.60(8)$ MeV, respectively. The relevant systematics of $1p$ and $2p$ separations energies have been studied theoretically in the core+$p$ and core+$p$+$p$ cluster models. The first-time observed excited states of $^{31}$Ar allow to infer the $2p$-separation energy $S_{2p}$ of 6(34) keV for its ground state. The first-time observed state in $^{29}$Ar with $S_{2p} = -5.50(18)$ MeV can be identified either as a ground or an excited state according to different systematics., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures. The $^{6}$Be continuum states were populated in the charge-exchange reaction $^1$H($^{6}$Li,$^{6}$Be)$n$ collecting very high statistics data ($\sim 5 \times 10^6$ events) on the three-body $\alpha$+$p$+$p$ correlations. The $^{6}$Be excitation energy region below $\sim 3$ MeV is considered, where the data are dominated by contributions from the $0^+$ and $2^+$ states. It is demonstrated how the high-statistics few-body correlation data can be used to extract detailed information on the reaction mechanism. Emission of two neutrons or two protons in reactions and decays is often discussed in terms of "dineutron" or "diproton" emission. The discussion often leans intuitively on something described by Migdal-Watson approximation. In this work we propose a way to formalize situations of dineutron emission. It is demonstrated that properly formally defined dineutron emission may reveal properties which are drastically different from those traditionally expected, and properties which are actually observed in three-body decays., Comment: 11 pages, 11 Figures

The lifetime of the recently discovered $2p$ emitter $^{67}$Kr was recently found considerably below the lower limit predicted theoretically. This communication addresses this issue.Different separation energy systematics are analyzed and different mechanisms for $2p$ emission are evaluated. It is found that the most plausible reason for this disagreement is a decay mechanism of $^{67}$Kr, which is not "true $2p$" emission, but "transition dynamics" on the borderline between true $2p$ and sequential $2p$ decay mechanisms. If this is true, this imposes stringent limits $E_r=1.35-1.42$ MeV on the ground state energy of $^{66}$Br relative to the $^{65}$Se-$p$ threshold., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Two-proton decay of the $^{17}$Ne low-lying states populated in the $^1$H($^{18}$Ne,$d$)$^{17}$Ne transfer reaction was studied. The two-proton width $\Gamma_{2p}$ of the $^{17}$Ne first excited $3/2^-$ state at $E^*=1.288$ MeV is of importance for the two-proton radioactivity theory and nuclear-astrophysics applications. A dedicated search for the two-proton emission of this state was performed leading to the new upper limit obtained for the width ratio $\Gamma_{2p}/\Gamma_{\gamma} < 1.6(3) \times 10^{-4}$. A novel, "combined mass" method is suggested and tested capable to improve the resolution of the experiment which is a prime significance for the study of nuclear states with extremely small particle-to-gamma width ratios $\Gamma_{\mathrm{part}}/\Gamma_{\gamma}$. The condition $\Gamma_{\mathrm{part}} \ll \Gamma_{\gamma}$ is quite common for the states of astrophysical interest which makes the proposed approach promising in this field.

Transitions among different mechanisms of two-proton decay are studied in general. The introduced improved direct-decay model generalizes the semi-analytical models used before and provides flawless phenomenological description of three-body correlations in $2p$ decays. This is demonstrated by examples of the low-lying $^{16}$Ne state decays. Different forms of transition dynamic are shown to be highly probable beyond the proton dripline for the $s$-$d$ shell nuclei. It is demonstrated that transition dynamic of $2p$ emitters can provide means for extraction of a width of the ground-state resonance of a core+$p$ subsystem of the core+$2p$ system. Practical applicability of the method is demonstrated by properties of the $^{14}$F ground state derived from the $^{15}\mbox{Ne}\rightarrow ^{\,13\!\!}\mbox{O}+2p$ decay data and of the $^{29}$Cl ground state derived from the $^{30}\mbox{Ar}\rightarrow ^{\,28\!\!}\mbox{S}+2p$ decay data., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

With the R$^{3}$B-LAND setup at GSI we have measured exclusive relative-energy spectra of the Coulomb dissociation of $^{18}$C at a projectile energy around 425~AMeV on a lead target, which are needed to determine the radiative neutron-capture cross sections of $^{17}$C into the ground state of $^{18}$C. Those data have been used to constrain theoretical calculations for transitions populating excited states in $^{18}$C. This allowed to derive the astrophysical cross section $\sigma^{*}_{\mathrm{n}\gamma}$ accounting for the thermal population of $^{17}$C target states in astrophysical scenarios. The experimentally verified capture rate is significantly lower than those of previously obtained Hauser-Feshbach estimations at temperatures $T_{9}\leq{}1$~GK. Network simulations with updated neutron-capture rates and hydrodynamics according to the neutrino-driven wind model as well as the neutron-star merger scenario reveal no pronounced influence of neutron capture of $^{17}$C on the production of second- and third-peak elements in contrast to earlier sensitivity studies.

Background: Models describing nuclear fragmentation and fragmentation-fission deliver important input for planning nuclear physics experiments and future radioactive ion beam facilities. These models are usually benchmarked against data from stable beam experiments. In the future, two-step fragmentation reactions with exotic nuclei as stepping stones are a promising tool to reach the most neutron-rich nuclei, creating a need for models to describe also these reactions. Purpose: We want to extend the presently available data on fragmentation reactions towards the light exotic region on the nuclear chart. Furthermore, we want to improve the understanding of projectile fragmentation especially for unstable isotopes. Method: We have measured projectile fragments from 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes colliding with a carbon target. These measurements were all performed within one experiment, which gives rise to a very consistent dataset. We compare our data to model calculations. Results: One-proton removal cross sections with different final neutron numbers (1pxn) for relativistic 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes impinging on a carbon target. Comparing model calculations to the data, we find that EPAX is not able to describe the data satisfactorily. Using ABRABLA07 on the other hand, we find that the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon needs to be decreased from 27 MeV to 8.1 MeV. With that decrease ABRABLA07 describes the data surprisingly well. Conclusions: Extending the available data towards light unstable nuclei with a consistent set of new data have allowed for a systematic investigation of the role of the excitation energy induced in projectile fragmentation. Most striking is the apparent mass dependence of the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon. Nevertheless, this parameter, which has been related to final-state interactions, requires further study.

The structure and decay dynamics for $0^+$ and $2^+$ continuum excitations of $^{26}$O are investigated in a three-body $^{24}$O+$n$+$n$ model. The validity of a simple approximation for the cross section profile for long-lived $2n$ emission is demonstrated. A sequence of three $0^+$ monopole ("breathing mode" type) excited states is predicted. These states could probably be interpreted as analogues of Efimov states pushed in the continuum due to insufficient binding. The calculated energies of the $2^+$ states are related to the excitation spectrum of $^{25}$O. We discuss the correlation between the predicted $^{26}$O spectrum and experimental observations., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The dynamic mechanism of the Thomas-Ehrman shift is studied in three-cluster systems by example of $^{16}$Ne and $^{16}$C isobaric mirror partners. We predict configuration mixings for $0^+$ and $2^+$ states in $^{16}$Ne and $^{16}$C. Large isospin symmetry breaking on the level of wave function component weights is demonstrated for these states and discussed as three-body mechanism of Thomas-Ehrman shift. It is shown that the description of the Coulomb displacement energies requires a consistency among three parameters: the $^{16}$Ne decay energy $E_T$, the $^{15}$F ground state energy $E_r$, and the configuration mixing parameters for the $^{16}$Ne/$^{16}$C $0^+$ and $2^+$ states. Basing on this analysis we infer the $^{15}$F $1/2^+$ ground state energy to be $E_r=1.39-1.42$ MeV., Comment: 10 pages 8 figures

The interaction of an $E/A$=57.6-MeV $^{17}$Ne beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in $^{16}$Ne following neutron knockout reactions. The decay of $^{16}$Ne states into the three-body $^{14}$O+$p$+$p$ continuum was observed in the High Resolution Array (HiRA). For the first time for a 2p emitter, correlations between the momenta of the three decay products were measured with sufficient resolution and statistics to allow for an unambiguous demonstration of their dependence on the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction. Contrary to previous experiments, the intrinsic decay width of the $^{16}$Ne ground state was found to be narrow ($\Gamma<60$~keV), consistent with theoretical estimates., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The structure and decay of $^{26}$O are investigated in a three-body $^{24}$O+$n+n$ model suitable for studies of the long-lived (including radioactivity timescale) states. We have found extremely strong effect of the subbarrier configuration mixing on the decay width of true $2n$ emitters due to core recoil and neutron-neutron final state interaction. This effect is far exceeding analogous effect in the true $2p$ emitters. Our calculations provide reasonably narrow boundaries for the lifetime vs.\ decay energy dependence for the true $2n$ emission. An upper limit of $\sim 1$ keV for the decay energy of the unbound $^{26}$O is inferred based on the recent experimental lifetime value., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The influence of the initial-state structure and the reaction mechanism on three-body decays is investigated by example of the 6Be continuum populated in neutron-knockout reactions on 7Be. The sensitivity of the 6Be excitation spectrum and the three-body correlations to the different components of the model is demonstrated. It is shown that the spin composition of the initial state may have an overwhelming effect on the three-body continuum. The characteristics and structure of the second $0^+_2$ and $2^+_2$ states in 6Be are predicted for the first time and the conditions for their reliable observations are formulated. The effects of interference and the alignment of three-body states on the three-body correlations are demonstrated., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes 25O and 26O are investigated experimentally and theoret- ically. In this first R3B-LAND experiment, the unbound states are populated at GSI via proton- knockout reactions from 26F and 27F at relativistic energies around 450 MeV/nucleon. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into 24O plus one or two neutrons, the 25O ground- state energy and lifetime are determined, and upper limits for the 26O ground state are extracted. In addition, the results provide evidence for an excited state in 26O at around 4 MeV. The ex- perimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

The interaction of an E/A=70 - MeV 7Be beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in 6Be following neutron knockout reactions. The three-body decay of the ground and first excited states into the alpha+p+p exit channel were detected in the High Resolution Array. Precise three-body correlations extracted from the experimental data allowed us to obtain insight into the mechanism of the three-body democratic decay. The correlation data are in a good agreement with a three-cluster-model calculation and thus validate this theoretical approach over a broad energy range., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures; Corrected typos

By using the 1H(6Li,6Be)n charge-exchange reaction, continuum states in 6Be were populated up to E_t=16 MeV, E_t being the 6Be energy above its three-body decay threshold. In kinematically complete measurements performed by detecting alpha+p+p coincidences, an E_t spectrum of high statistics was obtained, containing approximately ~5x10^6 events. The spectrum provides detailed correlation information about the well-known 0^+ ground state of 6Be at E_t=1.37 MeV and its 2^+ state at E_t=3.05 MeV. Moreover, a broad structure extending from 4 to 16 MeV was observed. It contains negative parity states populated by Delta L=1 angular momentum transfer without other significant contributions. This structure can be interpreted as a novel phenomenon, i.e. the isovector soft dipole mode associated with the 6Li ground state. The population of this mode in the charge-exchange reaction is a dominant phenomenon for this reaction, being responsible for about 60% of the cross section obtained in the measured energy range., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Unknown isotope 26S, expected to decay by two-proton (2p) emission, was studied theoretically and was searched experimentally. The structure of this nucleus was examined within the relativistic mean field (RMF) approach. A method for taking into account the many-body structure in the three-body decay calculations was developed. The results of the RMF calculations were used as an input for the three-cluster decay model worked out to study a possible 2p decay branch of this nucleus. The experimental search for 26S was performed in fragmentation reactions of a 50.3 A MeV 32S beam. No events of 26S or 25P (a presumably proton-unstable subsystem of 26S) were observed. Based on the obtained production systematics an upper half-life limit of T_{1/2}<79 ns was established from the time-of-flight through the fragment separator. Together with the theoretical lifetime estimates for two-proton decay this gives a decay energy limit of Q_{2p}>640 keV for 26S. Analogous limits for 25P are found as T_{1/2}<38 ns and Q_{p}>110 keV. In the case that the one-proton emission is the main branch of the 26S decay a limit Q_{2p}>230 keV would follow for this nucleus. It is likely that 26S resides in the picosecond lifetime range and the further search for this isotope is prospective for the decay-in-flight technique., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Nowadays quantum-mechanical theory allows one to reliably calculate the processes of 2p radioactivity (true three-body decays) and the corresponding energy and angular correlations up to distances of the order of 1000 fm. However, the precision of modern experiments has now become sufficient to indicate some deficiency of the predicted theoretical distributions. In this paper we discuss the extrapolation along the classical trajectories as a method to improve the convergence of the theoretical energy and angular correlations at very large distances (of the order of atomic distances), where only the long-range Coulomb forces are still operating. The precision of this approach is demonstrated using the "exactly" solvable semianalytical models with simplified three-body Hamiltonians. It is also demonstrated that for heavy 2p emitters, the 2p decay momentum distributions can be sensitive to the effect of the screening by atomic electrons. Three-body correlations for the ground-state decay of the lightest two-proton emitter $^{6}$Be are studied both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical studies are performed in a three-body hyperspherical-harmonics cluster model. In the experimental studies, the ground state of $^{6}$Be was formed following the $\alpha$ decay of a $^{10}$C beam inelastically excited through interactions with Be and C targets. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is obtained demonstrating the existence of complicated correlation patterns which can elucidate the structure of $^{6}$Be and, possibly, of the A=6 isobar., Comment: 17 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables

We derive quasiclassical expressions for the three-body decay width and define the ``preexponential'' coefficients for them. The derivation is based on the integral formulae for the three-body width obtained in the semianalytical approach with simplified three-body Hamiltonian [L.V. Grigorenko and M.V.\ Zhukov, arXiv:0704.0920v1]. The model is applied to the decays of the first excited $3/2^{-}$ state of $^{17}$Ne and $3/2^{-}$ ground state of $^{45}$Fe. Three-body decays of resonant states are studied using integral formulae for decay widths. Theoretical approach with a simplified Hamiltonian allows semianalytical treatment of the problem. The model is applied to decays of the first excited $3/2^{-}$ state of $^{17}$Ne and the $3/2^{-}$ ground state of $^{45}$Fe. The convergence of three-body hyperspherical model calculations to the exact result for widths and energy distributions are studied. The theoretical results for $^{17}$Ne and $^{45}$Fe decays are updated and uncertainties of the derived values are discussed in detail. The continuum of $^{10}$He nucleus is studied theoretically in a three-body $^{8}$He+$n$+$n$ model basing on the recent information concerning $^9$He spectrum [Golovkov, \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. C \textbf{76}, 021605(R) (2007)]. The $^{10}$He ground state (g.s.) candidate with structure $[p_{1/2}]^2$ for new g.s. energy of $^9$He is predicted to be at about $2.0-2.3$ MeV. The peak in the cross section associated with this state may be shifted to a lower energy (e.g. $\sim 1.2$ MeV) when $^{10}$He is populated in reactions with $^{11}$Li due to peculiar reaction mechanism. Formation of the low-energy ($E< 250$ keV) ``alternative'' ground state with structure $[s_{1/2}]^2$ is highly probable in $^{10}$He in the case of considerable attraction (e.g. $a<-5$ fm) in the s-wave $^9$He channel, which properties are still quite uncertain. This result either questions the existing experimental low-energy spectrum of $^{10}$He or place a limit on the scattering length in $^9$He channel, which contradicts existing data., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

One-proton removal from 15O at intermediate energies (56 A MeV) is studied in the eikonal approximation of the Glauber model. The production of the 14N core fragment in the ground and excited states is regarded. The calculated proton removal cross section, the 15O interaction cross section, and the longitudinal momentum distribution of the 14N fragments are compared to recent experimental data [1]. [1] H. We develop the formalism based on the S-matrix for $3 \to 3$ scattering to derive the direct three-body resonant radiative capture reaction rate. Within this formalism the states, which decay only/predominantly directly into three-body continuum, should also be included in the capture rate calculations. %The results obtained indicate that some theoretical calculations are %incomplete. Basing on the derivation, as well as on the modern experimental data and theoretical calculations concerning $^{17}$Ne nucleus, we significantly update the reaction rate for $^{15}$O($2p$,$\gamma$)$^{17}$Ne process in explosive environment. The nuclide $^{17}$Ne is studied theoretically in a three-body $^{15}$O+$p$+$p$ model. We demonstrate that the experimental condition for existence of a proton halo in $^{17}$Ne can be reasonably quantified in terms of $s/d$ configuration mixing. We discuss experimental evidences for a proton halo in $^{17}$Ne. We define which kind of experimental data could elucidate this issue., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Electromagnetic processes in loosely bound nuclei are investigated using an analytical model. In particular, electromagnetic dissociation of $^8$B is studied and the results of our analytical model are compared to numerical calculations based on a three-body picture of the $^8$B bound state. The calculation of energy spectra is shown to be strongly model dependent. This is demonstrated by investigating the sensitivity to the rms intercluster distance, the few-body behavior, and the effects of final state interaction. In contrast, the fraction of the energy spectrum which can be attributed to E1 transitions is found to be almost model independent at small relative energies. This finding is of great importance for astrophysical applications as it provides us with a new tool to extract the E1 component from measured energy spectra. An additional, and independent, method is also proposed as it is demonstrated how two sets of experimental data, obtained with different beam energy and/or minimum impact parameter, can be used to extract the E1 component., Comment: Submitted to Phys. In this paper we develop an analytical model in order to study electromagnetic processes involving loosely bound neutron--rich and proton--rich nuclei. We construct a model wave function, to describe loosely bound few--body systems, having the correct behaviour both at large and small distances. The continuum states are approximated by regular Coulomb functions. As a test case we consider the two--body Coulomb dissociation of 8B and, the inverse, radiative capture reaction. The difference between using a pure two--body model and the results obtained when incorporating many--body effects, is investigated. We conclude that the interpretation of experimental data is highly model dependent and stress the importance of measuring few--body channels., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B. An analytical model, recently developed to study the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) energy spectra of two-neutron halo nuclei, is applied to 11-Li and 14-Be. We find that a reliable set of experimental data on EMD could help to resolve the problem concerning the structure of the 11-Li ground state. For 14-Be we find a mutual inconsistency between the existing experimental data on the binding energy, radius and EMD energy spectrum. In a recent experimental study (Gomez del Campo et al, PRL 86, 43 (2001)) of the reaction 17F(p,2p)16O, two-proton events were measured from excitations near a 1-, E*=6.15 MeV state in 18Ne. We calculate by means of R-matrix theory the resonant two-proton production cross section and branching ratios. We conclude that it is unlikely that two-proton production via population of the 1- state is sufficient to explain the observed two-proton events. The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used as an energy-loss spectrometer to measure the longitudinal momentum distributions of {16,18}C fragments after one-neutron removal reactions in {17,19}C impinging on a carbon target at about 910 MeV/u. The distributions in the projectile frames are characterized by a FWHM of 141+-6 MeV/c for {16}C and 69+-3 MeV/c for {18}C.
