Abstract The cerebral cortex is vital for the processing and perception of sensory stimuli. In the somatosensory axis, information is received primarily by two distinct regions, the primary (S1) and secondary (S2) somatosensory cortices. Top-down circuits stemming from S1 can modulate mechanical and cooling but not heat stimuli such that circuit inhibition causes blunted perception. This suggests that responsiveness to particular somatosensory stimuli occurs in a modality specific fashion and we sought to determine additional cortical substrates. In this work, we identify in a mouse model that inhibition of S2 output increases mechanical and heat, but not cooling sensitivity, in contrast to S1. Combining 2-photon anatomical reconstruction with chemogenetic inhibition of specific S2 circuits, we discover that S2 projections to the secondary motor cortex (M2) govern mechanical and heat sensitivity without affecting motor performance or anxiety. Taken together, we show that S2 is an essential cortical structure that governs mechanical and heat sensitivity.

Sea surface temperature (SST) is one of the most important parameters in the global ocean–atmosphere system, and its long-term changes will have a significant impact on global climate and ecosystems. Accurate prediction of SST, therefore, especially the improvement of long-term predictive skills is of great significance for fishery farming, marine ecological protection, and planning of maritime activities. Since the effective and precise description of the long-range dependence between input and output requires higher model prediction ability, it is an extremely challenging task to achieve accurate long-term prediction of SST. Inspired by the successful application of the transformer and its variants in natural language processing similar to time-series prediction, we introduce it to the SST prediction in the China Sea. The model Transformer with temporal embedding, attention Distilling, and Stacked connection in Part (TransDtSt-Part) is developed by embedding the temporal information in the classic transformer, combining attention distillation and partial stacked connection, and performing generative decoding. High-resolution satellite-derived data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is utilized, and long-term SST predictions with day granularity are achieved under univariate and multivariate patterns. With root mean square error and mean absolute error as metrics, the TransDtSt-Part outperforms all competitive baselines in five oceans (i.e., subareas of Bohai, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, Taiwan Strait, and South China Sea) and six prediction horizons (i.e., 30, 60, 90, 180, 270, and 360 days). Experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the innovative model is encouraging and promising for the long-term prediction of SST.

The unstable supply and high cost of fishmeal have led to increased interest in low fish meal feed. As such, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of replacing fishmeal in feeds with soybean meal (SM) on the growth, immunity, and gut microbiota of crayfish. A total of 750 crayfish (4.00 g) were randomly divided into five groups (SS0, SS25, SS50, SS75, and SS100) with three replicates, and were fed diets with different levels of soybean meal substituted for fishmeal for six weeks. The results revealed that crayfish subjected to high SM diets experienced a significant decrease in the final body weight, weight gain rate, and specific growth rate (p0.05). Moreover, increasing SM inclusion exhibited the potential to impair the intestine, characterized by the increase in hemolymph LD content, decrease in the levels of TC content, T-AOC, and AKP, along with the observed edema of the lamina propria, and up-regulated mRNA expression levels of nfkb, alf, and tlr. Furthermore, high SM diets resulted in the emergence of new species and a shift in Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria, and Fusobacteriota. Specifically, the abundance of lower Firmicutes and higher Proteobacteria was observed in the SS100 group, which was closely correlated with genus-level Candidatus Bacilloplasma, and RsaHf231 abundance alterations. MENAs demonstrated that the high SM diets led to a more complex, yet fragile and unstable microbial network. The global network further indicated that the microbes contributing more to crayfish were in module eigen 4, in which 9 OTUs were identified as major biomarkers and mainly classified into Proteobacteria. Taken above, SM could replace 25 % of fishmeal in crayfish diets without negatively affecting growth performance, nutrient utilization, immunity, and antioxidant capacity. Excessive SM levels contributed to gut dysfunction and weakened the immune system of crayfish.

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to assess the global burden of disease for developmental and intellectual disabilities caused by iodine deficiency from 1990 to 2019.MethodsUsing data from the global burden of disease (GBD) 2019, we conducted a cross-country inequity analysis to examine the worldwide burden of developmental and intellectual disabilities caused by the issue of iodine deficiency from 1990 to 2019. Absolute and relative inequality were assessed by the slope index of inequality and the concentration index, respectively. After summarising the latest evidence, we also projected the age-standardized prevalence and years lived with disability (YLD) rates up to 2030 using the BAPC and INLA packages in R statistical software.ResultsIn 2019, the global age-standardized prevalence and YLD rates for developmental and intellectual disabilities due to iodine deficiency were 22.54 per 100,000 population (95% UI 14.47 to 29.23) and 4.12 per 100,000 population (95% UI 2.25 to 6.4), respectively. From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized prevalence and YLD rates of developmental and intellectual disabilities due to iodine deficiency decreased significantly. Geographic distribution showed that areas with lower socio-demographic indices (SDI) were the most affected. The correlation between higher SDI and lower prevalence highlights the role of economic and social factors in the prevalence of the disease. Cross-national inequity analysis shows that disparities persist despite improvements in health inequalities. In addition, projections suggest that the disease burden may decline until 2030.ConclusionThis research underscores the necessity for targeted interventions, such as enhancing iodine supplementation and nutritional education, especially in areas with lower SDI. We aim to provide a foundation for policymakers further to research effective preventative and potential alternative treatment strategies.

Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) has emerged as an important tool for monitoring tropical cyclones (TCs) due to its high spatial resolution and cloud-penetrating capability. Recent advancements in SAR technology have led to smaller and lighter satellites, yet few studies have evaluated their effectiveness in TC monitoring. This paper employs an algorithm for automatic TC center location, involving three stages: coarse estimation from a whole SAR image; precise estimation from a sub-SAR image; and final identification of the center using the lowest Normalized Radar Cross-Section (NRCS) value within a smaller sub-SAR image. Using three wide-swath miniaturized SAR images of TC Noru (2022), and TCs Doksuri and Koinu (2023), the algorithm’s accuracy was validated by comparing estimated TC center positions with visually located data. For TC Noru, the distances for the three stages were 21.42 km, 14.39 km, and 8.19 km; for TC Doksuri—14.36 km, 20.48 km, and 17.10 km; and for TC Koinu—47.82 km, 31.59 km, and 5.42 km. The results demonstrate the potential of miniaturized SAR in TC monitoring.

BackgroundNumerous studies have already identified an association between excessive consumption of red meat and colorectal cancer (CRC). However, there has been a lack of detailed understanding regarding the disease burden linked to diet high in red meat and CRC.ObjectiveWe aim to offer evidence-based guidance for developing effective strategies that can mitigate the elevated CRC burden in certain countries.MethodsWe used the data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 to evaluate global, regional, and national mortality rates and disability-adjusted Life years (DALYs) related to diet high in red meat. We also considered factors such as sex, age, the socio-demographic index (SDI), and evaluated the cross-national inequalities. Furthermore, we utilized DALYs data from 204 countries and regions to measure cross-country inequalities of CRC by calculating the slope index of inequality and concentration index as standard indicators of absolute and relative inequalities.DiscussionThe results show that globally, the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized disability adjusted life year rate (ASDR) related to CRC due to diet high in red meat have decreased, with estimated annual percent change (EAPCs) of −0.32% (95% CI −0.37 to −0.28) and-0.18% (95% CI −0.25 to −0.11). Notably, the burden was higher among males and the elderly. The slope index of inequality rose from 22.0 (95% CI 18.1 to 25.9) in 1990 to 32.9 (95% CI 28.3 to 37.5) in 2019 and the concentration index fell from 59.5 (95% CI 46.4 to 72.6) in 1990 to 48.9 (95% CI 34.6 to 63.1) in 2019. Also, according to our projections, global ASDR and ASMR might tend to increase up to 2030.ConclusionASMR and ASDR for CRC associated with high red meat diets declined globally from 1990 to 2019, but the absolute number of cases is still rising, with men and the elderly being more affected. CRC associated with diets high in red meat exhibits significant income inequality, placing a disproportionate burden on wealthier countries. Moreover, according to our projections, ASMR and ASDR are likely to increase globally by 2030. In order to address this intractable disease problem, understanding changes in global and regional epidemiologic trends is critical for policy makers and others.

In this study, juvenile crayfish hatched from the same population were cultured in different growing environments: pond (D1), paddy field (D2), and aquaculture barrel (D3), and fed for 60 days. Crayfishes were selected randomly, females and males, 50 tails each from six groups (D1-♀, D1-♂, D2-♀, D2-♂, D3-♀, D3-♂) to measure the following morphological traits: full length (X1), body length (X2), chelicerae length (X3), chelicerae weight (X4), cephalothorax length (X5), cephalothorax width (X6), cephalothorax height (X7), eye spacing (X8), caudal peduncle length (X9), and caudal peduncle weight (X10). We found that the coefficient of variation (CV) of X4 was the largest in each culture mode, and males (28.58%~38.67%) were larger than females (37.76%~66.74%). The CV of X4 of crayfish cultured in D1 and D2 was larger than that of D3. All traits except X8 were positively correlated with body weight (p < 0.05). After pathway analysis, we found that X4, X5, X7, and X10 were significantly correlated with the body weight of D1-♀; the equation was YD1-♀ = −29.803 + 1.249X4 + 0.505X5 + 0.701X7 + 1.483X10 (R2 = 0.947). However, X2, X4, and X6 were significantly correlated with the body weight of D1-♂; the equation was YD1-♂ = −40.881 + 0.39X2 + 0.845X4 + 1.142X6 (R2 = 0.927). In D2-♀, X1, X4, X5, and X10 were significantly correlated with body weight; the equation was YD2-♀ = −12.248 + 0.088X1 + 1.098X4 + 0.275X5 + 0.904X10 (R2 = 0.977). X4 and X5 played a major role in the body weight of D2-♂ with the equation: YD2-♂ = −24.871 + 1.177X4 + 0.902X5 (R2 = 0.973). X3 and X10 mainly contributed to the body weight of D3-♀ with the equation: YD3-♀ = −22.476 + 0.432X3 + 3.153X10 (R2 = 0.976). X1 and X4 mainly contributed to the body weight of D3-♂ with the equation: YD3-♂ = −34.434 + 0.363X1 + 0.669X4 (R2 = 0.918). Comparing the pathway analysis with the gray relation analysis, we could conclude that the traits most correlated with body weight in D1-♀ were X10 and X7; in D1-♂, X6; in D2-♀, X10, X1, and X5; in D2-♂, X5; in D3-♀, X10; and in D3-♂, X4 and X1.

BackgroundSpinal cord injuries, often resulting from spine fractures, can lead to severe lifelong symptoms such as paraplegia and even mortality. Over the past few decades, there has been a concerning increase in the annual incidence and mortality rates of spinal cord injuries, which has also placed a growing financial strain on healthcare systems. This review aims to offer a comprehensive overview of spinal cord injuries by estimating their global incidence, prevalence, and the impact in terms of years lived with disability, using data obtained from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study.MethodIn this study, we utilized data from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study, a widely recognized source for global health data. Our methodology involved estimating the global incidence and prevalence of spinal cord injuries while also assessing the impact on years lived with a disability. We analyzed this data comprehensively to identify patterns and trends and made predictions.FindingThis research delved into the evolving trends in the global burden of spinal cord injuries, identified key risk factors, and examined variations in incidence and disability across different Socio-demographic Index (SDI) levels and age groups. Briefly, in 2019, the global incidence and burden of YLDs of SCI significantly increased compared to 1990. While males had higher incidence rates compared to females. Falls were identified as the primary cause of SCI. Trend projections up to 2030 revealed a slight decrease in ASIR for males, an upward trend in age-specific incidence rates for both sexes and a similar pattern in age-standardized YLD rates. Additionally, our findings provided crucial groundwork for shaping future policies and healthcare initiatives, with the goal of mitigating the burden of spinal cord injuries, enhancing patient outcomes, and fortifying prevention efforts.InterpretationUnderstanding the global burden of spinal cord injuries is essential for designing effective healthcare policies and prevention strategies. With the alarming increase in prevalence rates and their significant impact on individuals and healthcare systems, this research contributes vital insights to guide future efforts in reducing the incidence of spinal cord injuries, improving the quality of life for affected individuals, and reducing the economic burden on healthcare systems worldwide.

Tuna cooking liquid has unpleasant aroma. In our previous studies, Cyberlindnera fabianii JGM9-1 and Lactobacillus plantarum RP26 demonstrated the ability to degrade this unpleasant aroma. However, the mechanism of microbial deodorization remains unclear. In this study, tuna cooking liquid was fermented using JGM9-1 alone, RP26 alone, and a combination of both strains. Changes in volatile aromatic compounds during fermentation were analyzed using HS-SPME-GC/MS. The unpleasant aroma of tuna cooking liquid were nine characteristic aromatic compounds associated with fishy, stinky, and greasy aromas. Furthermore, we found that the fermentation of microbes removed these unpleasant aromatic compounds and replaced them with pleasant aromatic compounds that contributed to fruity, grassy, and floral aromas. Finally, we screened 21 strong pairwise correlations between the production and consumption of characteristic volatile aromatic compounds by RP26 and JGM9-1, through HCA, VIP, OAV and Spearman’s pairwise correlation analysis. These results help to clarify the metabolic mechanisms of microbial deodorization in tuna cooking liquid.

Ultrashort terahertz (THz) beam is often affected by spatio-temporal distortion due to its long wavelength, and this spatio-temporal coupling will degrade the focusing effect. Here, we develop a numerical model for calculating the vector focusing of ultrashort pulses with arbitrary spatial and temporal distribution, which adopt the vector diffraction integral and coherent spectrum superposition methods. Leveraging it, the focusing of a broadband pulse can be characterized together with its vector characteristics and we explore the influences of multifarious spatio-temporal couplings on the focusing of ultrashort THz pulses. In addition, the possibility of focusing the ultrashort THz radiation from an undulator to 1 GV/m is also discussed. This will provide further guidance for the non-equilibrium state of matter induced by ultrashort strong-field THz pulses.

Patients with liver disease are prone to various cognitive impairments. It is undeniable that cognitive impairment is often regulated by both the nervous system and the immune system. In this review our research focused on the regulation of mild cognitive impairment associated with liver disease by humoral factors derived from the gastrointestinal tract, and revealed that its mechanisms may be involved with hyperammonemia, neuroinflammation, brain energy and neurotransmitter metabolic disorders, and liver-derived factors. In addition, we share the emerging research progress in magnetic resonance imaging techniques of the brain during mild cognitive impairment associated with liver disease, in order to provide ideas for the prevention and treatment of mild cognitive impairment in liver disease.

The photoinjector laser system of Shenzhen Superconducting Soft X-Ray Free Electron Laser (S3FEL) is reported in this paper. This laser system operates at up to 1 MHz and produces more than 50 μJ infrared (IR) laser pulses. With a customized fourth harmonic generation (FHG) module, more than 2 μJ ultraviolet (UV) laser pulses were obtained. The power standard deviations of the IR laser and the UV laser are 0.093% and 0.395% respectively. While the pulse energy standard deviations are 1.087% and 1.746% correspondingly. We implemented the pulse stacking scheme to generate flat-top pulses. With four birefringent uniaxial crystals, the Gaussian pulses were converted to flat-top shape, featuring 10 ps pulse width and 0.5 ps rising and falling edges. A cut-Gaussian transverse profile with very sharp rising and falling edges can be produced after the spatial pulse shaper.

Circadian rhythm oscillation and the gut microbiota play important roles in several physiological functions and pathology regulations. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the characteristics of diabetic hepatic ischemia–reperfusion injury (HIRI) and the role of the intestinal microbiota in diabetic mice with HIRI. Hepatic ischemia–reperfusion injury surgery was performed at ZT0 or ZT12. The liver pathological score and the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were analyzed to evaluate liver injury. We conducted an FMT experiment to examine the role of intestinal microbiota in diabetic mice with HIRI. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing of fecal samples was performed for microbial analysis. Our results showed that hyperglycemia aggravated HIRI in diabetic mice, but there was no diurnal variation seen in diabetic HIRI. We also demonstrated that there were significant alterations in the gut microbiota composition between the diabetic and control mice and that gut microbiota transplantation from diabetic mice had obvious harmful effects on HIRI. These findings provide some useful information for the future research of diabetic mice with HIRI.

The ultrafast electron beam diffraction technology, which involves an electron beam at the level of several megaelectron volts, is crucial for studying ultrafast dynamic processes at the atomic level. To discern these processes at a temporal resolution of a few femtoseconds, the demand to focus on electron beams with femtosecond or even subfemtosecond width and time jitter is increasing. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of electron beams as they interact with lasers, present an explanation of the mechanism that results in time jitter, and propose a method to mitigate or possibly eliminate the time jitter by inducing a specific energy chirp in the electron beam through the use of X-band photocathode rf gun. The feasibility of this method is confirmed by implementing bunch compression with two radially polarized laser pulses. Simulation results demonstrate that the time jitter can be reduced to less than 1 fs when the amplitude jitter of the rf gun is within ±0.05% and the phase jitter is within ±0.5°. Based on our findings, we anticipate that this approach will substantially advance the field of ultrafast science and technology.

The terrain, such as Taiwan Island, have been shown to have complex effects on typhoons and the associated typhoon waves. Terrain effects change with typhoon tracks. In this study, three types of typhoon tracks (northern, middle and southern) were defined according to the relationship between the typhoon tracks and Taiwan Island. Typhoons on these three tracks and typhoon waves were simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting–Simulating Waves Nearshore model. In each type of typhoon, a control case without the Taiwan topography was simulated to compare with real cases. The results showed that typhoons on different tracks were affected by the terrain of Taiwan Island in different ways. Taiwan Island had weakening, decelerating and deflective effects on typhoons. The ranking for the weakening effect was middle track (81%) > southern track (69%) > northern track (3%). The decelerating effect was 7% in the northern track and 25% in the southern track. The deflective effect of the terrain makes typhoons on the northern (southern) track deflect toward the south (north). When a typhoon on a middle track passed over Taiwan Island, a new center of low pressure would replace the former center and make the track discontinuous. In addition, the influence of typhoons on regions near Taiwan Island changed with the typhoon’s tracks. The influence ranking of typhoons in Taiwan Island was the middle track > southern track > northern track, which was consistent with that of typhoons in the Taiwan Strait and opposite to that of typhoons in Fujian Province. The influence ranking of typhoons on the Taiwan Strait was the opposite of the typhoon intensity ranking, which suggests that the intensities of wind and waves in the strait were more related to typhoon tracks than typhoon intensity. The variations in the significant wave height were similar to those of the wind speed, but there was a time lag (2 h) between them due to the wave growth process and swells. In addition, the significant wave height distribution sometimes differed from the wind speed distribution under the influence of swells and terrain.

The formation of neural circuits requires extensive interactions of cell-surface proteins to guide axons to their correct target neurons. Trans-cellular interactions of the adhesion G protein-coupled receptor latrophilin-2 (Lphn2) with its partner teneurin-3 instruct the precise assembly of hippocampal networks by reciprocal repulsion. Lphn2 acts as a repulsive receptor in distal CA1 neurons to direct their axons to the proximal subiculum, and as a repulsive ligand in the proximal subiculum to direct proximal CA1 axons to the distal subiculum. It remains unclear if Lphn2-mediated intracellular signaling is required for its role in either context. Here, we show that Lphn2 couples to Gα12/13 in heterologous cells; this coupling is increased by constitutive exposure of the tethered agonist. Specific mutations of Lphn2’s tethered agonist region disrupt its G protein coupling and autoproteolytic cleavage, whereas mutating the autoproteolytic cleavage site alone prevents cleavage but preserves a functional tethered agonist. Using an in vivo misexpression assay, we demonstrate that wild-type Lphn2 misdirects proximal CA1 axons to the proximal subiculum and that Lphn2 tethered agonist activity is required for its role as a repulsive receptor in axons. By contrast, neither tethered agonist activity nor autoproteolysis were necessary for Lphn2’s role as a repulsive ligand in the subiculum target neurons. Thus, tethered agonist activity is required for Lphn2-mediated neural circuit assembly in a context-dependent manner.

High-performance photodetectors hold promising potential in optical communication and imaging systems. However, conventional counterparts are suffering narrow detection range, high power consumption, and poor polarization sensitivity. Characteristics originating from switchable polarization in ferroelectrics can be used to optimize the photo-to-electric procedure and improve the photodetection performance. In this regard, we constructed a configuration by integrating 2-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with ferroelectric lithium niobate (LiNbO3), resulting in the MoS2/LiNbO3 heterostructured photodetector. Benefiting from the pyroelectric effect of LiNbO3, the limitation of bandgap on the detection range can be broken, thus broadening the response band of the detector to 365 to 1,064 nm, as well as enabling the self-powered characteristic. Meanwhile, high carrier mobility and decent light absorbance of MoS2 introduce robust light-matter interactions with the underlying LiNbO3, leading to ultrafast rise/fall times of ≈150 μs/250 μs and switching ratios of up to ≈190. Moreover, the highest responsivity, specific detectivity, and external quantum efficiency achieved were 17.3 A·W−1, 4.3 × 1011 Jones, and 4,645.78%, respectively. Furthermore, because of the anisotropy of the spontaneous-polarized LiNbO3 substrate, the photocurrent of the device achieved a dichroic ratio of 7.42, comparing favorably to most MoS2-based photodetectors. This work demonstrates the integration potential between ferroelectric LiNbO3 and 2-dimensional materials for high-performance photodetection.

Degradation of crop straw in natural environment has been a bottleneck. There has been a recent increase in the exploration of cold-adapted microorganisms as they can solve the problem of corn straw degradation under low temperatures and offer new alternatives for the sustainable development of agriculture. The study was conducted in low-temperature (10°C) and high-efficiency cellulose-degrading bacteria were screened using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) selection medium and subjected to genome sequencing by the third-generation Pacbio Sequl and the second-generation Illumina Novaseq platform, and their cellulase activity was detected by 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method. The results showed that the low-temperature (10°C) and high-efficiency cellulose-degrading bacterium Bacillus subtilis K1 was 4,060,823 bp in genome size, containing 4,213 genes, with 3,665, 3,656, 2,755, 3,240, 1,261, 3,336 and 4,003 genes annotated in the non-redundant protein sequence database (NR), Pfam, clusters of orthologous groups of proteins (COGs), Genome Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and Annotation databases, respectively. In addition, a large number of lignocellulose degradation-related genes were annotated in the genome. The cellulose activity of B. subtilis K1 was higher, exhibiting the highest activity of endo-β-glucanase (24.69 U/ml), exo-β-glucanase (1.72 U/ml) and β-glucosaccharase (1.14 U/ml). It was found that through adding cold-adapted cellulose-degrading bacteriaK1 in the corn straw composting under 6°C (ambient temperature), the average temperature of straw composting was 58.7°C, and higher 86.7% as compared to control. The HA/FA was higher 94.02% than the control and the lignocellulose degradation rate was lower 18.01–41.39% than the control. The results provide a theoretical basis for clarifying the degradation potential of cold-adapted cellulose-degrading bacteria and improving the cellulose degradation efficiency.

Abstract Across neurodegenerative diseases, common mechanisms may reveal novel therapeutic targets based on neuronal protection, repair, or regeneration, independent of etiology or site of disease pathology. To address these mechanisms and discuss emerging treatments, in April, 2021, Glaucoma Research Foundation, BrightFocus Foundation, and the Melza M. and Frank Theodore Barr Foundation collaborated to bring together key opinion leaders and experts in the field of neurodegenerative disease for a virtual meeting titled “Solving Neurodegeneration”. This “think-tank” style meeting focused on uncovering common mechanistic roots of neurodegenerative disease and promising targets for new treatments, catalyzed by the goal of finding new treatments for glaucoma, the world’s leading cause of irreversible blindness and the common interest of the three hosting foundations. Glaucoma, which causes vision loss through degeneration of the optic nerve, likely shares early cellular and molecular events with other neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system. Here we discuss major areas of mechanistic overlap between neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system: neuroinflammation, bioenergetics and metabolism, genetic contributions, and neurovascular interactions. We summarize important discussion points with emphasis on the research areas that are most innovative and promising in the treatment of neurodegeneration yet require further development. The research that is highlighted provides unique opportunities for collaboration that will lead to efforts in preventing neurodegeneration and ultimately vision loss.

Terahertz vortex beams need to be developed for supporting new applications in fundamental sciences. In this paper, a novel and feasible scheme is presented for generation of helically microbunched electron beam for the emission of terahertz (THz) vortex pulses. In the scheme, a seed laser pulse with longitudinal and azimuthal modulation is firstly produced by optical beating of dual-vortex pulses. Through the laser-electron interaction, such a complex profile of laser can be converted to a periodically azimuth-dependence energy modulation in the electron beam, which finally forms a helical microbunching structure in the beam after a dispersion section. Then, this electron beam is applied to emit THz vortex beams and its quantum number can be continuously tuned by changing the topological charges of the optical laser pulses. This approach is suited to conventional accelerator system consisted of a modulator and a chicane. We expect this presentation can access to new researches in THz science.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been widely used for observing sea-surface wind fields (SSWFs), with many scholars having evaluated the performance of SAR in SSWF retrieval. Due to the large systems and high costs of traditional SAR, a tendency towards the development of smaller and more cost-effective SAR systems has emerged. However, to date, there has been no evaluation of the SSWF retrieval performance of miniaturized SAR systems. This study utilized 1053 HiSea-1 and Chaohu-1 miniaturized SAR images covering the Southeast China Sea to retrieve SSWFs. After a quality control procedure, the retrieved winds were subsequently compared with ERA5, buoy, and ASCAT data. The retrieved wind speeds demonstrated root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 2.42 m/s, 1.64 m/s, and 3.29 m/s, respectively, while the mean bias errors (MBEs) were found to be −0.44 m/s, 1.08 m/s, and −1.65 m/s, respectively. Furthermore, the retrieved wind directions exhibited RMSEs of 11.5°, 36.8°, and 41.7°, with corresponding MBEs of −1.3°, 2.4°, and −8.8°, respectively. The results indicate that HiSea-1 and Chaohu-1 SAR satellites have the potential and practicality for SSWF retrieval, validating the technical indicators and performance requirements implemented during the satellites’ design phase.

Neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) include complex and multifactorial diseases that affect many patients. The 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neuron system plays an important role in NCDs. Existing studies have reported that para-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), a 5-HT scavenger, has a negative effect on cognitive function. However, we believe that PCPA may result in NCDs through other pathways. To explore this possibility, behavioral tests were performed to evaluate the cognitive function of PCPA-treated mice, suggesting the appearance of cognitive dysfunction and depression-like behavior. Furthermore, 16S rRNA and metabolomic analyses revealed that dysbiosis and acetate alternation could be related to PCPA-induced NCDs. Our results suggest that not only 5-HT depletion but also dysbiosis and acetate alternation contributed to PCPA-related NCDs. Specifically, the latter promotes NCDs by reducing short-chain fatty acid levels. Together, these findings provide an alternative perspective on PCPA-induced NCDs.

Abstract Accurate prediction of the remaining useful life for lithium‐ion battery is beneficial to prolong the life of the battery and increase safety. With the capacity degradation curve obtained from the data of the battery charge and discharge experiment, the remaining useful life of the battery was predicted by using particle filter. In order to improve the prediction accuracy, the particle filter with residual resampling method is used to overcome the lack of particle diversity which has an important effect on the accuracy of state estimation. Compared with the prediction result of the extended Kalman filter, it was found that the precision and stability of particle filter are better than those of extended Kalman filter. The research results presented in this paper provide some suggestions for the health monitoring of power battery for electric vehicles.

Chronic Postsurgical Pain (CPSP) is well recognized to impair cognition, particularly memory. Mounting evidence suggests anatomic and mechanistic overlap between pain and cognition on several levels. Interestingly, the drugs currently used for treating chronic pain, including opioids, gabapentin, and NMDAR (N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor) antagonists, are also known to impair cognition. So whether pain-related cognitive deficits have different synaptic mechanisms as those underlying pain remains to be elucidated. In this context, the synaptic transmission in the unsusceptible group (cognitively normal pain rats) was isolated from that in the susceptible group (cognitively compromised pain rats). It was revealed that nearly two-thirds of the CPSP rats suffered cognitive impairment. The whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings revealed that the neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala neurons were enhanced in the unsusceptible group, while these parameters remained the same in the susceptible group. Moreover, the neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission in hippocampus neurons demonstrated the opposite trend. Correspondingly, the levels of synaptic transmission-related proteins demonstrated a tendency similar to that of the excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission. Furthermore, morphologically, the synapse ultrastructure varied in the postsynaptic density (PSD) between the CPSP rats with and without cognitive deficits. Together, these observations indicated that basal excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission changes were strikingly different between the CPSP rats with and without cognitive deficits.

The technique of organ transplantation is well established and after transplantation the patient might be faced with the problem of nerve regeneration of the transplanted organ. Transplanted organs are innervated by the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and visceral sensory plexuses, but there is a lack of clarity regarding the neural influences on the heart, liver and kidneys and the mechanisms of their innervation. Although there has been considerable recent work exploring the potential mechanisms of nerve regeneration in organ transplantation, there remains much that is unknown about the heterogeneity and individual variability in the reinnervation of organ transplantation. The widespread availability of radioactive nerve tracers has also made a significant contribution to organ transplantation and has helped to investigate nerve recovery after transplantation, as well as providing a direction for future organ transplantation research. In this review we focused on neural tracer imaging techniques in humans and provide some conceptual insights into theories that can effectively support our choice of radionuclide tracers. This also facilitates the development of nuclear medicine techniques and promotes the development of modern medical technologies and computer tools. We described the knowledge of neural regeneration after heart transplantation, liver transplantation and kidney transplantation and apply them to various imaging techniques to quantify the uptake of radionuclide tracers to assess the prognosis of organ transplantation. We noted that the aim of this review is both to provide clinicians and nuclear medicine researchers with theories and insights into nerve regeneration in organ transplantation and to advance imaging techniques and radiotracers as a major step forward in clinical research. Moreover, we aimed to further promote the clinical and research applications of imaging techniques and provide clinicians and research technology developers with the theory and knowledge of the nerve.

Typhoons and typhoon waves can cause disasters in coastal areas around the world. The Taiwan Strait often experiences typhoons, especially in summer. Numerical models have been adopted to predict typhoons and reduce losses. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is widely used in typhoon simulations, and the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model performs well in wave simulations. However, significant uncertainty remains in terms of choosing suitable WRF physical parameterizations in different situations. To evaluate the effect of WRF physical parameterizations on wind and wave simulations, 27 simulation experiments were designed. Three typhoon events (Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti) with different tracks that influenced the Taiwan Strait were simulated. Three parameters (wind speed, wind direction and significant wave height) were assessed using Taylor diagrams, and it was found that the best simulation experiment changed according to typhoon tracks and physical parameters. In wind speed simulation, the best simulation experiment is 12 for typhoon Dujuan and 19 for typhoon Goni and Meranti. From the perspective of wind direction simulation, experiments 26, 23, and 2 performed best for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. And experiments 19, 1, and 20 had the best performances in significant wave height simulation for typhoons Goni, Dujuan, and Meranti. The WRF-SWAN model using the best simulation experiment reduced the error and exhibited good performance in the wind and wave simulations. Skill scores of three parameters were all over 70 for typhoon Goni and 80 for typhoon Dujuan and Meranti. The applicability of the best simulation experiments was demonstrated in typhoon simulations with similar tracks. The accuracy of the wave simulation depended on wind speed, wind direction, and their interaction. In addition, a scheme’s sensitivity changed with different typhoon tracks. This study provides references for designing physical parameterizations for use with the WRF-SWAN model, which may help to simulate typhoons and typhoon waves in the Taiwan Strait more accurately in the future.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) has been found to be a serious clinical problem with high morbidity and mortality, and is associated with acute inflammatory response and sympathetic activation that subsequently play an important role in the development of AKI. It is well known that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and immune system intensely interact and mutually control each other in order to maintain homeostasis in response to stress or injury. Evidence has shown that the superior cervical sympathetic ganglion (SCG) participates in the bidirectional network between the immune and the SNS, and that the superior cervical ganglionectomy has protective effect on myocardial infarction, however, the role of the SCG in the setting of renal ischemic reperfusion injury has not been studied. Here, we sought to determine whether or not the SCG modulates renal ischemic reperfusion (IR) injury in rats. Our results showed that bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) 14 days before IR injury markedly reduced the norepinephrine (NE) in plasma, and down-regulated the increased expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the kidney and hypothalamus. Sympathetic denervation by SCGx in the AKI group increased the level of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), and exacerbated renal pathological damage. Sympathetic denervation by SCGx in the AKI group enhanced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in plasma, kidney and hypothalamus, and increased levels of Bax in denervated rats with IR injury. In addition, the levels of purinergic receptors, P2X3R and P2X7R, in the spinal cord were up-regulated in the denervated rats of the IR group. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that the sympathetic denervation by SCGx aggravated IR-induced AKI in rats via enhancing the inflammatory response, thus, the activated purinergic signaling in the spinal cord might be the potential mechanism in the aggravated renal injury.

There is a potential safety risk with ethyl carbamate (EC) in Hongqu Huangjiu production; 90% of the EC in rice wine is produced by the reaction of the urea with the alcohol of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In our previous experiments, we screened and obtained a S. cerevisiae strain JH301 that offered low urea production. However, the key genes responsible for low urea production of strain JH301 remain unclear. Here, the whole genome sequencing of S. cerevisiae strain JH301 was accomplished via a next-generation high-throughput sequencing and long-read sequencing technology. There are six main pathways related to the urea metabolism of strain JH301 based on KEGG pathway mapping. Three species-specific genes are related to the urea metabolism pathways and were found in comparative genome analysis between strains JH301 and S288c during Hongqu Huangjiu production for the first time. Finally, the ARG80 gene was found to be likely a key gene responsible for low urea production of S. cerevisiae strain JH301, as determined by PCR and qRT-PCR check analyses from DNA and RNA levers. In conclusion, the results are useful for a scientific understanding of the mechanism of low urea production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae during Hongqu Huangjiu fermentation. It also is important to control the urea and EC contents in Hongqu Huangjiu production.

After complete spinal cord injury, spinal segments below the lesion maintain inter-segmental communication via the intraspinal propriospinal network. Here, the authors show that neurons in these circuits can be chemogenetically modulated to improve locomotor function in mice after spinal cord injury.

We propose an all-optical technique to record the time information of relativistic electron beams with sub-optical-cycle duration. The technique is based on the interaction of the electron beam with the ponderomotive potential of an optical traveling wave generated by two counter-propagating circularly polarized optical fields at different frequencies in vacuum. One of the optical pulses is a vortex laser pulse, and the other is a normal Gaussian laser pulse. The time information of the electron beam is mapped into the angular information, which can be converted into a spatial distribution after a drift section. Thus, the temporal profile and arrival time of the electron beam can be retrieved from the spatial distribution of the electron beam. The measurement has a dynamic range comparable to the period of the optical intensity grating formed by two counter-propagating laser pulses. This technique may have wide applications in many research fields that require sub-optical-cycle electron beams.

Sulfur is abundant in the Universe, but the observed abundance ratio of SH to H2S doesn’t agree with astrochemical models. The authors measure product state-resolved translational energy spectra of photoproducts in a jet-cooled H2S beam as a function of wavelength, showing that SH yield is lower than assumed in the models.

Background: Hong Qu glutinous rice wine (HQGRW) is brewed under non-aseptic fermentation conditions, so it usually has a relatively high total acid content. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamics of the bacterial communities and total acid during the fermentation of HQGRW and elucidate the correlation between total acid and bacterial communities. Results: The results showed that the period of rapid acid increase during fermentation occurred at the early stage of fermentation. There was a negative response between total acid increase and the rate of increase in alcohol during the early fermentation stage. Bacterial community analysis using high-throughput sequencing technology was found that the dominant bacterial communities changed during the traditional fermentation of HQGRW. Both principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis revealed that there was a great difference between the bacterial communities of Hong Qu starter and those identified during the fermentation process. Furthermore, the key bacteria likely to be associated with total acid were identified by Spearman's correlation analysis. Lactobacillus, unclassified Lactobacillaceae, and Pediococcus were found, which can make significant contributions to the total acid development (|r| > 0.6 with FDR adjusted P

Objective: To explore the efficacy of anticoagulation in improving outcomes and safety of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in subgroups identified by clinical-based stratification and unsupervised machine learning.Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort study unselectively reviewed 2,272 patients with COVID-19 admitted to the Tongji Hospital between Jan 25 and Mar 23, 2020. The association between AC treatment and outcomes was investigated in the propensity score (PS) matched cohort and the full cohort by inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) analysis. Subgroup analysis, identified by clinical-based stratification or unsupervised machine learning, was used to identify sub-phenotypes with meaningful clinical features and the target patients benefiting most from AC.Results: AC treatment was associated with lower in-hospital death risk either in the PS matched cohort or by IPTW analysis in the full cohort. A higher incidence of clinically relevant non-major bleeding (CRNMB) was observed in the AC group, but not major bleeding. Clinical subgroup analysis showed that, at admission, severe cases of COVID-19 clinical classification, mild acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) cases, and patients with a D-dimer level ≥0.5 μg/mL, may benefit from AC. During the hospital stay, critical cases and severe ARDS cases may benefit from AC. Unsupervised machine learning analysis established a four-class clustering model. Clusters 1 and 2 were non-critical cases and might not benefit from AC, while clusters 3 and 4 were critical patients. Patients in cluster 3 might benefit from AC with no increase in bleeding events. While patients in cluster 4, who were characterized by multiple organ dysfunction (neurologic, circulation, coagulation, kidney and liver dysfunction) and elevated inflammation biomarkers, did not benefit from AC.Conclusions: AC treatment was associated with lower in-hospital death risk, especially in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Unsupervised learning analysis revealed that the most critically ill patients with multiple organ dysfunction and excessive inflammation might not benefit from AC. More attention should be paid to bleeding events (especially CRNMB) when using AC.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has wreaked havoc on millions of people around the world. Although China quickly brought the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) under control, there have been several sporadic outbreaks in different regions of China since June 2020. This article described the chronological nosocomial COVID-19 infection events related to several sporadic outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 in different regions of China. We have reported epidemiological characteristics and management measures of sporadic nosocomial COVID-19 infections from June 2020 to June 2021 and specially focused on the domestic COVID-19 breakthrough infection in China, such as domestic COVID-19 breakthrough infection—a vaccinated healthcare professional working in the isolation ward of a designated COVID-19 hospital.

Summary: In developing pro-myelination treatment, an important hurdle is the lack of reliable animal models for assessing de novo myelination in disease settings. We recently showed that regenerated axons in injured optic nerves fail to be myelinated, providing an animal model for this purpose. Here, we describe procedures to promote axonal regeneration, administer optic nerve crush, and assess oligodendrocyte differentiation and maturation into myelination-competent oligodendrocytes. This protocol allows for testing the efficacy of remyelination treatments in an in vivo central nervous system (CNS).For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Wang et al. Currently, the management of acute and chronic pain in clinical practice remains unsatisfactory due to the existence of limited effective treatments, and novel therapeutic strategies for pathological pain are urgently needed. In the past few decades, the role of serum and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 1 (SGK1) in the development of pain and diurnal rhythms has been implicated in numerous studies. The expression levels of SGK1 mRNA and protein were found to be elevated in the spinal cord and brain in various pathological pain models. Blocking SGK1 significantly attenuated pain-like responses and the development of pathological pain. These studies provide strong evidence that SGK1 plays a role in the development of various types of pathological pain and that targeting SGK1 may be a novel therapeutic strategy for pain management. In this review article, we provide evidence from animal models for the potential role of SGK1 in the regulation of pathological pain caused by inflammation, nerve injury, psychiatric disorders, and chronic opioid exposure.

A scheme to generate coherent terahertz (THz) radiation carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) through down-frequency conversion of optical lasers and higher order mode coupling is proposed and analyzed. Based on the laser–electron interaction in the undulator under a linear regime, the scheme utilizes dual-frequency lasers resonating at the harmonics of two consecutive undulators and a dispersion section to impose a THz helical microbunching in the electron beam. By choosing appropriate parameters of lasers and dispersion section, the density modulation can be down-converted to a THz spectral-domain and the central frequency can be extensively tuned together with the helical mode number. Then, the helically microbunched beam can be used as a source of THz OAM radiation in a downstream radiator. We expect that the intense vortex beam in the terahertz band will bring new opportunities for the research of quantum topological materials.

In order to quantitatively analyze the factors affecting the carbonation of reinforced concrete structures, the carbonation coefficient model is established based on 1834 groups of test data from natural carbonation and indoor accelerated tests in this paper. The main factors considered in the statistical model are the environmental temperature, the concentration of carbon dioxide, relative humidity, water–cement ratio, fly ash replacement, compressive strength of 28 days, curing time, compaction type, exposure to a salt environment, and environmental exposure classes. Based on the multiple nonlinear regression method, the carbonation coefficient model is fitted in two sections according to the different environmental exposures of the concrete structure. To analyze the applicability of the formula, the statistical formulas of relative humidity less than 70% and relative humidity higher than 70% are verified by the test data, and satisfactory results are obtained. Based on the quantitative analysis of the statistical model, the specific effects of relative humidity, strength, carbon dioxide content, fly ash, and curing time on concrete carbonation are clarified. The results show that the factors affecting carbonation are also different with different humidity values in the exposed environment of the concrete structure. When the relative humidity of the exposed environment is less than 70%, the parameters that have a great impact on concrete carbonation are fly ash replacement, compressive strength of 28 days, relative humidity, and the concentration of carbon dioxide. Among them, fly ash replacement, relative humidity, and the concentration of carbon dioxide can promote the carbonation of concrete. When the relative humidity of the exposed environment is higher than 70%, the parameters that have a great impact on concrete carbonation are the concentration of carbon dioxide, relative humidity, compressive strength of 28 days, curing time, and exposure classes. Only the concentration of carbon dioxide is conducive to the carbonation of concrete, and relative humidity has a very significant effect on concrete carbonation.

The optic nerve is part of the mammalian adult central nervous system (CNS) and has limited capability to regenerate after injury. Deletion of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), a negative regulator of the PI3 kinase/Akt pathway, has been shown to promote regeneration in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) after optic nerve injury [1]. We present the lipidome of adult PTENloxP/loxP mice subjected to intravitreal injection of adeno-associated viruses expressing Cre (AAV-Cre) as a model of CNS neuroregeneration. At 4 weeks old, PTENloxP/loxP mice were intravitreally-injected with 2–3 μl of either AAV-Cre (KO) or AAV-PLAP (control), and two weeks later optic nerve crush was performed. At indicated time-points after crush (0 days, 7 days, 14 days), mice were euthanized and optic nerves were immediately dissected out, and then flash frozen on dry ice. A modified Bligh and Dyer [2] method was used for lipid extraction from the optic nerves, followed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC MS-MS) lipid profiling using a Q-Exactive Orbitrap instrument coupled with Accela 600 HPLC. The raw scans were analysed with LipidSearch 4.2 and the statistical analysis was conducted through Metaboanalyst 4.0. This data is available at Metabolomics Workbench, study ID ST001477.

Pleckstrin-2 (PLEK2) is a crucial mediator of cytoskeletal reorganization. However, the potential roles of PLEK2 in gastric cancer are still unknown. PLEK2 expression in gastric cancer was examined by western blotting and real-time PCR. Survival analysis was utilized to test the clinical impacts of the levels of PLEK2 in gastric cancer patients. In vitro and in vivo studies were used to estimate the potential roles played by PLEK2 in modulating gastric cancer proliferation, self-renewal, and tumourigenicity. Bioinformatics approaches were used to monitor the effect of PLEK2 on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) signalling pathways. PLEK2 expression was significantly upregulated in gastric cancer as compared with nontumour samples. Kaplan-Meier plotter analysis revealed that gastric cancer patients with higher PLEK2 levels had substantially poorer overall survival compared with gastric cancer patients with lower PLEK2 levels. The upregulation or downregulation of PLEK2 in gastric cancer cell lines effectively enhanced or inhibited cell proliferation and proinvasive behaviour, respectively. Additionally, we also found that PLEK2 enhanced EMT through downregulating E-cadherin expression and upregulating Vimentin expression. Our findings demonstrated that PLEK2 plays a potential role in gastric cancer and may be a novel therapeutic target for gastric cancer.

Ball shear testing is an efficient approach to investigate the mechanical reliability of solder joints at the structural level. In the present study, a series of low-speed ball shear tests were conducted to study the deformation and fracture characteristics of Sn96.5Ag3Cu0.5 solder joints at continuous speeds from 10 μm/s to 200 μm/s. In order to account for randomness, the quantity of tests was repeated for each shear rate. The relationship between mechanical properties and shear speeds was calculated in detail via effective statistical analysis. In addition, by utilizing SEM imaging and ingredient analysis the interfacial effect and fracture mechanism of solder balls were obtained and their fracture mode classified into two types, viz., bulk fracture and interface fracture. Furthermore, by means of statistical analysis and approximate calculation it was proven that bulk fracture balls have greater adhesive powers and reliability compared with interface fracture balls.

Background As the major bioactive compounds in citrus and grape, it is significant to use the contents of flavonoids and phenolic acids as quality evaluation criteria to provide a better view of classifying the quality and understanding the potential health benefits of each fruit variety. Methods A total of 15 varieties of citrus and 12 varieties of grapes were collected from Fujian, China. High-performance liquid chromatography method was used for the simultaneous determination of 17 phenolic compounds, including gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, syringic acid, ρ-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, catechin, epicatechin, resveratrol, rutin, naringin, hesperidin, quercetin, nobiletin and tangeritin in the peels of citrus and grape cultivars. Further, the cultivars of citrus and grape were classified using principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Results A thorough separation of the 17 compounds was achieved within 100 min. The tested method exhibited good linearity (the limits of detection and limits of quantification were in the range of 0.03–1.83 µg/mL and 0.09–5.55 µg/mL, respectively), precision (the relative standard deviations of repeatability were 1.02–1.97%), and recovery (92.2–102.82%) for all the compounds, which could be used for the simultaneous determination of phenolic compounds in citrus and grape. Hesperidin (12.93–26,160.98 µg/g DW) and salicylic acid (5.35–751.02 µg/g DW) were the main flavonoids and phenolic acids in 15 citrus varieties, respectively. Besides, the hesperidin (ND to 605.48 µg/g DW) and salicylic acid (ND to 1,461.79 µg/g DW) were found as the highest flavonoid and the most abundant phenolic acid in grapes, respectively. A total of 15 citrus and 12 grape samples were classified into two main groups by PCA and HCA with strong consistency.

Abstract Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common acute abdominal disease, 10–20% of which can evolve into severe AP (SAP) causing significant morbidity and mortality. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have the potential of repairing SAP, but the detailed mechanism remains unknown. We demonstrate here that microRNA-9 (miR-9) modified BMSCs (pri-miR-9-BMSCs) can significantly reduce the pancreatic edema, infiltration, hemorrhage, necrosis, the release of amylase and lipase. Meanwhile, decreased local/systemic inflammatory response (TNF-α↓, IL-1β↓, IL-6↓, HMGB1↓, MPO↓, CD68↓, IL-4↑, IL-10↑, and TGF-β↑) and enhanced regeneration of damaged pancreas (Reg4↑, PTF1↑, and PDX1↑) are also promoted. But these effects diminish or disappear after antagonizing miR-9 (TuD). Besides, we find that miR-9 is negatively correlated with AP and miR-9 agomir which can mimic the effects of pri-miR-9-BMSCs and protect injured pancreas. Furthermore, we investigate that BMSCs deliver miR-9 to the injured pancreas or peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC), which can target the NF-κB1/p50 gene and inhibit the NF-κB signaling pathway (p-P65↓, NF-κB1/p50↓, IκBα↑, IκBβ↑). Taken together, these results show that miR-9 is a key paracrine factor of BMSCs attenuating SAP targeting the NF-κB1/p50 gene and suppressing the NF-κB signaling pathway.

A new scheme is proposed to generate electron beams with a frequency-chirped density modulation for producing ultrashort THz radiation pulse in an optimally tapered undulator. In this scheme, an energy chirped electron beam is sequentially modulated in two modulators by interacting with two laser pulses with the same central frequency but different chirp rates, practically one laser pulse is linearly chirped and the other is chirpfree. Two dispersion sections are applied to transfer the energy modulation formed in the modulators to the desired density modulation. The central frequency of the density modulation of the electron beam can be continuously tuned by changing the compression coefficients of the dispersion sections, and the chirp rate of the final modulation frequency can also be tuned by either varying the compression coefficients or the linear chirp rates of the modulation laser pulses. The generation of ultrashort and broadband THz radiation pulses is also briefly discussed.

The natural frequency change of reinforced concrete (RC) members during damage when subjected to low cycle loading was studied through horizontal cyclic loading experiments. Three groups of RC flexural members were subjected to horizontal, harmonic, low cycle loading to simulate earthquake conditions. The relation of instantaneous load, instantaneous displacement, and instantaneous natural frequency during loading was deduced. Using the resulting equation, the test members’ natural frequencies at any moment during loading could be calculated accurately. Then the natural frequency change curves and their fitting equations were also obtained. The impact of loading period T and loading amplitude A on a test member’s damage rate V was analyzed, which showed that the impact of T on V was quadratic, and the relation between A and V was linear. Finally, by fitting experimental data of number of loading cycles N, loading amplitude A, loading period T, and natural frequency ω, a three-variable function, ω(N, A, T), was determined, revealing the change process of test members’ frequencies under arbitrary harmonic vibrations.

Improving axonal transport in the injured and diseased central nervous system has been proposed as a promising strategy to improve neuronal repair. However, the contribution of each cargo to the repair mechanism is unknown. DRG neurons globally increase axonal transport during regeneration. Because the transport of specific cargos after axonal insult has not been examined systematically in a model of enhanced regenerative capacity, it is unknown whether the transport of all cargos would be modulated equally in injured central nervous system neurons. Here, using a microfluidic culture system we compared neurons co-deleted for PTEN and SOCS3, an established model of high axonal regeneration capacity, to control neurons. We measured the axonal transport of three cargos (mitochondria, synaptic vesicles and late endosomes) in regenerating axons and found that the transport of mitochondria, but not the other cargos, was increased in PTEN/SOCS3 co-deleted axons relative to controls. The results reported here suggest a pivotal role for this organelle during axonal regeneration.
