The proton-boron (p-$^{11}$B) reaction is regarded as the holy grail of advanced fusion fuels, since the primary reaction produces three $\alpha$ particles with few neutrons and induced radio-activities from second order reactions. Compared to the Deuterium-Tritium reaction a much higher reaction temperature is required. Moreover, bremsstrahlung energy losses due to the high nuclear charge of boron deem it seemingly apparent than a fusion reactor based on Deuterium-Tritium plasma in equilibrium is to say the least very difficult.It is becoming more appealing to collide intense laser beams or accelerated proton beams with a boron target to produce p-$^{11}$B reactions. The fusion yield of p-$^{11}$B reactions is closely related to proton beam parameters and boron target conditions such as density, temperature, and ingredients. Quantum degeneracy will increase fusion yields by reducing the stopping power of injected protons. In this work, we suggest a high-efficiency scheme for beam-target p-$^{11}$B fusions via injecting a MeV proton beam into a highly compressed quantum degenerated boron target. Such a boron target can be achieved via quasi-isentropic compression of solid boron by using precisely shaped laser pulses. Our results indicate that for densities ranging from $10^3$ to $10^4\rho_s$, where $\rho_s$ is the density of solid boron, contributions of bound and free electrons to the stopping of protons can be completely disregarded and dramatically reduced respectively. The result is an increase in fusion yield by orders of magnitude. Furthermore, in order to achieve multiplication factor $F$ greater than one, with $F$ defined as the ratio of output fusion energy to the energy of injected protons, it is found there exits a minimum possible density of boron target, which is $2.15 \times 10^4 \rho_s$ when the kinetic energy of injected protons is $0.8$ MeV.

This letter proposes a new method based on ultrafast high energy electron radiography to diagnose transient electromagnetic field. For the traditional methods, large scattering from matter will increase the uncertainty of measurement, but our method still works in that case. To verify its feasibility, a $ 50MeV $ electron radiography beamline is designed and optimized, and preliminary simulation of diagnosing a circular magnetic field ranging from $ 170T*\mu m $ to $ \sim 600T*\mu m$ has been done. The simulation results indicate that this method can achieve point-by-point measurement of field strength. By destroying the angle symmetry of incident beams, the field direction can also be determined. Combined with the advantages of electron beams, ultrafast high energy electron radiography is very suitable for transient electromagnetic field diagnosis.

The energy deposition and the atomic processes, such as the electron-capture, ionization, excitation and radiative-decays for slow heavy ions in plasma remains an unsolved fundamental problem. Here we investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, the stopping of 100 keV=u helium ions in a well-defined hydrogen plasma. Our precise measurements show a much higher energy loss than the predictions of the semi-classical approaches with the commonly used effective charge. By solving the Time Dependent Rate Equation (TDRE) with all the main projectile states and for all relevant atomic processes, our calculations are in remarkable agreement with the experimental data. We also demonstrated that, acting as a bridge for electron-capture and ionization, the projectile excited states and their radiative decays can remarkably influence the equilibrium charge states and consequently lead to a substantial increasing of the stopping of ions in plasma.

The collective excitation of ordered spins, known as spin waves or magnons, can in principle radiate by emitting travelling photons to an open system when decaying to the ground state. However, in contrast to the electric dipoles, magnetic dipoles contributed by magnons are more isolated from electromagnetic environment with negligible radiation in the vacuum, limiting their application in coherent communication by photons. Recently, strong interaction between cavity standing-wave photons and magnons has been reported, indicating the possible manipulation of magnon radiation via tailoring photon states. Here, with loading an yttrium iron garnet sphere in a one-dimensional circular waveguide cavity in the presence of both travelling and standing photon modes, we demonstrate an efficient photon emissions from magnon and a significant magnon radiative damping with radiation rate found to be proportional to the local density of states (LDOS) of photon. By modulating the LDOS including its magnitude and/or polarization, we can flexibly tune the photon emission and magnon radiative damping on demand. Our findings provide a general way in manipulating photon emission from magnon radiation for harnessing energy and angular momentum generation, transfer and storage modulated by magnon in the cavity and waveguide electrodynamics., Comment: 9+7 pages, 4+2 figures

the main physics goal for Back-n white neutron facility at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is to measure nuclear data. The energy of neutrons is one of the most important parameters for measuring nuclear data. Method of time of flight (TOF) is used to obtain the energy of neutrons. The time when proton bunches hit the thick tungsten target is considered as the start point of TOF. T0 signal, generated from the CSNS accelerator, represents this start time. Besides, the T0 signal is also used as the gate control signal that triggers the readout electronics. Obviously, the timing precision of T0 directly affects the measurement precision of TOF and controls the running or readout electronics. In this paper, the T0 fan-out for Back-n white neutron facility at CSNS is proposed. The T0 signal travelling from the CSNS accelerator is fanned out to the two underground experiment stations respectively over long cables. To guarantee the timing precision, T0 signal is conditioned with good signal edge. Furthermore, techniques of signal pre-emphasizing and equalizing are used to improve signal quality after T0 being transmitted over long cables with about 100 m length. Experiments show that the T0 fan-out works well, the T0 signal transmitted over 100 m remains a good time resolution with a standard deviation of 25 ps. Back-n is a white neutron experimental facility at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The time structure of the primary proton beam make it fully applicable to use TOF (time-of-flight) method for neutron energy measuring. We implement the electronics of TOF measurement on the general-purpose readout electronics designed for all of the seven detectors in Back-n. The electronics is based on PXIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express eXtensions for Instrumentation) platform, which is composed of FDM (Field Digitizer Modules), TCM (Trigger and Clock Module), and SCM (Signal Conditioning Module). T0 signal synchronous to the CSNS accelerator represents the neutron emission from the target. It is the start of time stamp. The trigger and clock module (TCM) receives, synchronizes and distributes the T0 signal to each FDM based on the PXIe backplane bus. Meantime, detector signals after being conditioned are fed into FDMs for waveform digitizing. First sample point of the signal is the stop of time stamp. According to the start, stop time stamp and the time of signal over threshold, the total TOF can be obtained. FPGA-based (Field Programmable Gate Array) TDC is implemented on TCM to accurately acquire the time interval between the asynchronous T0 signal and the global synchronous clock phase. There is also an FPGA-based TDC on FDM to accurately acquire the time interval between T0 arriving at FDM and the first sample point of the detector signal, the over threshold time of signal is obtained offline. This method for TOF measurement is efficient and not needed for additional modules. The formation of nano-hillocks on CaF2 crystal surfaces by individual ion impact has been studied using medium energy (3 and 5 MeV) highly charged ions (Xe19+ to Xe30+) as well as swift (kinetic energies between 12 and 58 MeV) heavy ions. For very slow highly charged ions the appearance of hillocks is known to be linked to a threshold in potential energy while for swift heavy ions a minimum electronic energy loss is necessary. With our results we bridge the gap between these two extreme cases and demonstrate, that with increasing energy deposition via electronic energy loss the potential energy threshold for hillock production can be substantially lowered. Surprisingly, both mechanisms of energy deposition in the target surface seem to contribute in an additive way, as demonstrated when plotting the results in a phase diagram. We show that the inelastic thermal spike model, originally developed to describe such material modifications for swift heavy ions, can be extended to case where kinetic and potential energies are deposited into the surface., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures
