Surface modification can improve biochar adsorption capacity. Biochars were produced from wheat straw through low-temperature pyrolysis at approximately 450°C, activated with hydrochloric acid (HCl), and coated with iron (FeCl36H2O) of different amounts. Results showed that activation with HCl and coating with iron can significantly increase biochar adsorption capacity. The increase after HCl treatment was very small at a high ratio of iron to biochar. The optimal ratio of iron to biochar for iron-coated biochar was 0.70. Adsorption capacity was calculated based on the amount of pure nitrogen or phosphorus. The maximum adsorption capacities were 2.47 and 16.58 mg g−1. The most effective pH values for nitrate and phosphate removal were 3 and 6, respectively. The active substance of the optimal-modified biochar (OMB) was amorphous FeOOH, and the structurewas the hydroxylated mineral surface of OMB in a water solution. The equilibrium pH of the adsorption solution was lower than 7 even when the initial pH of the solution was 11 becausechanged into,, and H3O+with the increase in pH. A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of foliar spraying of three kinds of compound agents [plant polysaccharides (P1), plant polysaccharides plus 5-aminolevulinic acid (P2), and plant polysaccharides plus 5-aminolevulinic acid and dimethylpiperidinium chloride (P3)] at the initial flowering stage of winter wheat on its yield components, sucrose content, soluble sugar content, the accumulation and translocation of dry matter, nitrogen and phosphorus. The grain number per spike and kilo-grains mass of winter wheat increased with the spray of the compound agents. The grain yield increased by more than 8. 5% compared with the control. Within 20 days after spraying the three compound agents, the sucrose content of flag leaf had an obvious increase. Compared with the control, P1 and P3 increased the soluble sugar content by more than 4. 5% and 11. 0%, respectively. P3 enhanced the accumulations of post-anthesis dry matter, nitrogen and phosphorus by 48.5%, 116.9% and 18.1%, respectively. Correspondingly, contributions of accumulated post-anthesis dry matter and nutrient to grain yield increased significantly. Whereas, the contribution of translocated pre-anthesis nutrient to grain yield in P3 treatment was smaller than in the other treatments. The high yield of winter wheat was related to the regulation of photosynthetic product supply in vegetative organ, the increased soluble sugar content in grain, and the accumulation of post-anthesis dry matter and nutrient regulated by the plant polysaccharides- containing compound agent. Aim: To evaluate a hybrid bioartificial liver support system (HBALSS) in cynomolgus monkeys with acute liver failure., Methods: To establish a model of acute liver failure, 0.3 g/kg of D-galactosamine was injected intravenously into cynomolgus monkeys. Chinese human liver cells were introduced into a perfusion bioreactor to carry out hybrid bioartificial liver support treatment. Forty-eight hours after the injection, one group of cynomolgus monkeys received HBALSS care, and a second experimental group received no treatment. Clinical manifestations of all animals, survival time, liver and kidney functions and serum biochemistry changes were recorded. Simultaneous detection of the number, viability and function of hepatocytes in the hybrid bioartificial liver were also performed., Results: Forty-eight hours after the injection of D-galactosamine, serum biochemistry levels were significantly increased, whereas albumin levels and the Fischer index were significantly reduced compared to baseline (all Ps < 0.05). Of the ten monkeys in the HBALSS treatment group, five survived, with an average duration of survival of 128 ± 3 h. All cynomolgus monkeys in the control group died, with a duration of survival of 112 ± 2 h. Survival time was significantly longer with HBALSS treatment (P < 0.05). Moreover, the number, viability and function of hepatocytes were maintained at a high level with HBALSS., Conclusion: The novel hybrid bioartificial liver plays a significant role in liver support by significantly reducing serum biochemistry levels and extending animal survival time.
