Abstract

Light pollution has a serious impact on astronomical observations and ecological balance. So far, most scholars have carried out field measurements of urban sky glow luminance using satellite data. However, measurement of the light environment of an entire city is insufficient. This paper presents measurements of the sky within the city of Dalian and examines the changes in the distribution of luminance and colour temperature of the sky. It was found that over the transition from day to night the colour temperature of the sky decreases by approximately 2000 K–3000 K and the light spectrum transforms from a relatively uniform distribution to one with an obvious peak. Additionally, the zenith luminance is up to 0.01 cd/m2, more than 50 times the standard dark sky luminance. Dalian experiences serious light pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Plant root system plays an essential role in the acquisition of the edaphic resources, which are subject to local depletion. The size as well as the architecture of the root system determines the efficiency of the acquisition. In the present study, a stochastic model of plant root system architecture is formulated. The continuous growth and development of root system is described and modelled by stochastic processes (discrete events associated with a certain probability). The parameters of the model for each growth cycle include branching probability, w (rhythm ratio main axis vs. lateral roots), b (probability of growth) and c (probability of survival). Root segments were presented as connections of individual nodes. As root has no nodes in the sense of the botanical terms, an imaginary node with an elementary length is introduced. In order to obtain the parameters of the model, winter wheat seedlings were grown in a phytotron in sand culture watered by nutrient solution. Individual roots of 19-days-old se dlings were scanned and the images obtained were analysed with a root image-analysing software WinRhizo. Roots were clustered into 3 relatively homogeneous groups after an analysis of similarity according to 4 criteria: length of main axe, diameter of root apex of the main axe, lateral length density (total length of lateral roots per unit of main axe length), lateral root density (number of lateral roots per unit of main axe). In each root group, the parameters were fitted with a non-linear generalised least square method by comparing the theoretical length of root segments of various orders with the experimental data.

Abstract

We report a second-order nonlinear nanoprobe for characterizing ultrafast optical near fields. The proposed nanoprobe comprises second harmonic nanocrystals attached to a carbon nanotube, which is in turn attached to a silica fiber taper. We demonstrate in situ pulse characterization directly in the air core of a photonic crystal fiber. Further, it is shown that nanoprobes containing a single nanocrystal in the tip of the nanotube can be fabricated by auxiliary focused ion beam nanomilling. These results indicate that the proposed nanoprobe can open an avenue for probing the evolution of ultrafast optical fields in complex three-dimensional micro-or nanostructures. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we firstly studied whether H3K27me3 modification is a mechanism of miR-129-5p downregulation in breast cancer and further investigated the functional role of miR-129-5p in epithelial-tomesenchymal transition (EMT) and in multi-drug resistance (MDR) of the cancer cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunoprecipitation (IP) and Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay were performed to detect the association among SOX4, EZH2 and H3K27me3 and their enrichment in the promoter region of miR- 129-2. Western blot and immunofluorescent staining were performed to detect the expression of epithelial and mesenchymal markers. MTT assay was applied to test drug sensitivity. RESULTS: Enforced EZH2 and SOX4 expression resulted in suppressed miR-129-5p level in MCF-7 cells. There was an interaction among SOX4, EZH2 and H3K27me3 modification and they were significantly enriched in the region upstream of transcription start of miR-129-2. MCF-7 cells transfected with miR-129-5p mimics had significantly suppressed SOX4 expression. MCF-7 cells with miR-129-5p overexpression had significantly restored E-cadherin expression and suppressed N-cadherin and Vimentin expression. The drug sensitivity assay showed that miR-129-5p substantially reduced IC50 of ADM, VCR and PTX in MCF-7/ADM cells CONCLUSIONS: There is a reciprocal regulation between miR-129-5p and SOX4 via the SOX4/EZH2 complex mediated H3K27me3 modification in breast cancer cells.
