Abstract

Heracles, the self-sufficient “loner” of ancient Greek myth is shaped through interactions with others, notably Athena and Hera. As this chapter demonstrates, the input of these two deities runs deeper than the standard binary of helper (Athena)/persecutor (Hera) allows. Heracles is marked out as a mythological being through where he stands in relation to Athena and Hera who—separately and in collaboration—mark out his life as hero and his transformation to godhead and to a life as a specific kind of god. His nature, both his heroic nature and his divine nature, is shaped by Athena, but it is in connection with Hera that he is born, killed, immortalized, and, indeed, named.

Abstract

Collision of particles at high energies at accelerators is the main source of data used to obtain deeper understanding of the fundamental interactions and the structure of the matter. Processes of isolated photon production have provided many tests of theoretical descriptions of the universe on scales smaller than the proton. This work is dedicated to the analysis of the large amount of collision data that has been accumulated at ZEUS in 2004-2007 period and new methods of processing isolated photons that have been proposed. The authors develop software algorithms that allow obtaining the signal of isolated photons from the data collected on the ZEUS detector at electron-proton collider HERA, calculating the differential cross sections, and comparing the measured data with PYTHIA Monte Carlo predictions. Taking into account the features of the ZEUS detector, the photon signal is separated from the background events and the number of isolated photons is calculated. Computational mathematical and numerical methods have been used to simulate the interaction of particles in the detector. Monte Carlo predictions for differential cross sections as functions of the pseudorapidity and transverse energy of the photon ηg, ETg and the jet ηjet, ETjet, and the fraction of the photon momentum хgmeas carried by the interacting parton have been calculated and compared with the experimental data. The results of the study are compared with the previous studies and show for the first time that all isolated photon HERA measurements are consistent with each other. New results show improved uncertainties. The formation of isolated inclusive photons and photons with the accompanying jet was measured in photoproduction with ZEUS detector at HERA collider using the integrated luminosity of 374 ± 7 pb-1. For the first time, more complex Monte-Carlo simulation models of isolated photons for ZEUS detector were generated and applied, and the description of the photon signal was improved. It has been found that PYTHIA describes the shape of the cross section as a function of ηg well enough, but does not fully reproduce the shape of ETg, ETjet, and the middle region of хgmeas, while ηjet is described not very well. The reason for this discrepancy can be the lack of corrections of higher orders in the predictions for cross sections of direct photons. Scaling of the cross sections obtained with PYTHIA improves the description of ETg and ηg. The unsatisfactory description of ηjet indicates that further studies are required.

Abstract

Journal of high energy physics 2004(4), 70 (2020). doi:10.1007/JHEP04(2020)070, Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering with virtuality Q$^{2}$> 5 GeV$^{2}$ at a centre-of-mass energy $ \sqrt{s} $ = 318 GeV recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The correlations of charged particles have been measured in the range of laboratory pseudorapidity −1.5 < η < 2.0 and transverse momentum 0.1 < p$_{T}$< 5.0 GeV and event multiplicities N$_{ch}$ up to six times larger than the average 〈N$_{ch}$〉 ≈ 5. The two-particle correlations have been measured in terms of the angular observables c$_{n{2}}$ = 〈〈cosnΔφ〉〉, where n is between 1 and 4 and ∆φ is the relative azimuthal angle between the two particles. Comparisons with available models of deep inelastic scattering, which are tuned to reproduce inclusive particle production, suggest that the measured two-particle correlations are dominated by contributions from multijet production. The correlations observed here do not indicate the kind of collective behaviour recently observed at the highest RHIC and LHC energies in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions., Published by SISSA, [Trieste]

Abstract

Four new measurements are presented in the area of diffractive and exclusive production at HERA. Preliminary results are available for isolated photons in diffractive photoproduction from ZEUS and open charm cross section in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) regime from H1. ZEUS Collaboration has also measured the cross-section ratio σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ( 1 S ) in exclusive DIS using full HERA data statistics. Finally, H1 Collaboration for the first time studied exclusive ρ 0 meson photoproduction associated with a leading neutron at HERA.

Abstract

The ZEUS detector at HERA has been used to measure the production of isolated photons in two types of process: deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and diffractive photoproduction. The DIS results are presented as functions of two- and multi-particle final-state quantities, extending an earlier publication. Comparison is made with two NLO-based theoretical calculations. In diffraction, cross sections are evaluated in terms of a number of variables, differentiating between direct and resolved photon and pomeron processes. Evidence is found for the existence of a direct pomeron process in this reaction. The shapes of all the distributions are consistent with predictions from the RAPGAP Monte Carlo simulation.

8. Measurement of beauty production from dimuon events at HERA

Abstract

Beauty production in events containing two final-state muons has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 377 pb$^{-1}$. A low transverse-momentum threshold for muon identification, together with the large rapidity coverage of the ZEUS muon system and the upgraded ZEUS tracker, give access to an almost full phase space for beauty production in this channel. The cross section for beauty production in $ep$ collisions has been measured to be $11.4\pm0.8$ (stat.) $^{+3.9}_{-3.4}$ (syst.) nb. Differential cross sections and $b\bar{b}$ correlations are compared to previous measurements and theoretical models.

Abstract

Measurements of open charm and beauty production cross sections in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined and reduced cross sections are obtained. The combination method accounts for the correlations of the statistical and systematic uncertainties among the different datasets. Perturbative QCD calculations are compared to the combined data. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is performed using these data together with the combined inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA. The running charm- and beauty-quark masses are determined.

Abstract

Charm production in charged current deep inelastic scattering has been measured for the first time in e ± p collisions, using data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 358 pb−1. Results are presented separately for e + p and e − p scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 318 GeV within a kinematic phase-space region of 200 GeV2 < Q 2 < 60000 GeV2 and y < 0.9, where Q 2 is the squared four-momentum transfer and y is the inelasticity. The measured cross sections of electroweak charm production are consistent with expectations from the Standard Model within the large statistical uncertainties.

Abstract

High-precision HERA data corresponding to a luminosity of around 1 fb$^{-1}$ have been used in the framework of $eeqq$ contact interactions (CI) to set limits on possible high-energy contributions beyond the Standard Model to electron-quark scattering. Measurements of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections in neutral and charged current $ep$ scattering were considered. The analysis of the $ep$ data has been based on simultaneous fits of parton distribution functions including contributions of CI couplings to $ep$ scattering. Several general CI models and scenarios with heavy leptoquarks were considered. Improvements in the description of the inclusive HERA data were obtained for a few models. Since a statistically significant deviation from the Standard Model cannot be established, limits in the TeV range were set on all models considered., 24 pages, 6 tables, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review D

XXIX International Symposium on Lepton Photon Interactions at High Energies, LP2019, Toronto, Canada, 5 Aug 2019 - 10 Aug 2019; Trieste : SISSA, Proceedings of Science 367, 367/077 (2019). doi:https://doi.org/10.22323/1.367.0077, The search for physics beyond the Standard Model was pursued at the HERA ep ep collider, both for dedicated channels and general searches using the data on deep inelastic scattering. The high precision and wide kinematic range of the data collected by the H1 and ZEUS experiments not only allowed determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) from HERA data only, but also for simultaneous fits to be performed of PDFs with parameters of models beyond the Standard Model (BSM), providing an unbiased search for "new physics". Such a final simultaneous analysis was performed in the framework of eeqq eeqq contact interactions, including leptoquarks, and BSM modifications of the weak couplings. No statistically significant deviation from the Standard Model was observed and the most stringent limits from HERA on the considered models were set. Abstract

The exclusive deep inelastic electroproduction of $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi(1S)$ at an $ep$ centre-of-mass energy of 317 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA in the kinematic range $2 < Q^2 < 80$ GeV$^2$, $30 < W < 210$ GeV and $|t| < 1$ GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the photon virtuality, $W$ is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and $t$ is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The data for $2 < Q^2 < 5$ GeV$^2$ were taken in the HERA I running period and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 114 pb$^{-1}$. The data for $5 < Q^2 < 80$ GeV$^2$ are from both HERA I and HERA II periods and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 468 pb$^{-1}$. The decay modes analysed were $\mu^+\mu^-$ and $J/\psi(1S) \,\pi^+\pi^-$ for the $\psi(2S)$ and $\mu^+\mu^-$ for the $J/\psi(1S)$. The cross-section ratio $\sigma_{\psi(2S)}/\sigma_{J/\psi(1S)}$ has been measured as a function of $Q^2, W$ and $t$. Abstract

A search for a narrow baryonic state in the p K S 0 and p ‾ K S 0 system has been performed in ep collisions at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 358 pb − 1 taken in 2003–2007. The search was performed with deep inelastic scattering events at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, Q 2 , between 20 and 100 GeV 2 . Contrary to evidence presented for such a state around 1.52 GeV in a previous ZEUS analysis using a sample of 121 pb − 1 taken in 1996–2000, no resonance peak was found in the p ( p ‾ ) K S 0 invariant-mass distribution in the range 1.45–1.7 GeV. Upper limits on the production cross section are set.

Cross sections are evaluated in the photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 5 < EγT < 15 GeV and−0.7 < ηγ < 0.9, inclusively and also with a jet with transverse-energy and pseudorapidity in the ranges 4 < EjetT < 35 GeV and −1.5 < ηjet < 1.8, using a total integrated electron-proton luminosity of 456 pb−1. A number of kinematic variables were studied and compared to predictions from the Rapgap Monte Carlo model. An excess of data is observed above the Rapgap predictions for zmeaspom > 0.9 where zmeaspom is the fraction of the longitudinal momentum of the colourless “Pomeron” exchange that is transferred to the photon-jet final state, giving evidence for direct-Pomeron interactions.

Abstract

I propose a method for extracting the gluon geometry of the proton using the three sets of measured data from the experiments H1 and ZEUS at the HERA accelerator. In the bSat dipole model, a three-dimensional geometry of the proton is used, parametrised at leading order in the running coupling. The longitudinal direction is modeled in momentum space, while the transverse direction is modeled in impact parameter coordinate space. The data sets are: combined inclusive DIS, combined inclusive diffractive DIS, and exclusive diffractive DIS. The first two data sets can be used to extract the proton size, while the third is sensitive to its shape.

Abstract

Measurements of open beauty and charm production cross sections in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections for beauty and charm production are obtained in the kinematic range of photon virtuality 2.5≤Q2≤2000 GeV2 and Bjorken scaling variable 3×10−5≤xBj≤5×10−2.The combination method accounts for the correlations of the statistical and systematic uncertainties among the different data sets. The combined data are compared to perturbative QCD predictionsand used together with the combined inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA to determine the charm and beauty quark masses.

The ZEUS detector at HERA has been used to measure the photoproduction of isolated photons in diffractive events. Further kinematic variables studied include the fractions of the incoming photon energy and of the colourless exchange (“Pomeron”) energy that are imparted to a photon-jet final state. Abstract

The last two decades have seen a growing trend towards the experimental efforts at the electron-proton collider HERA in which have collected high precision data on the spectrum of leading neutron (LN) and leading-proton (LP) carrying a large fraction of the proton's energy. In our recent study [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{95} (2017), 074011], we have proposed an approach based on the Fractures Functions (FF) formalism and have extracted the neutron Fracture Functions (neutron FFs) from a global QCD analysis of LN production data measured by H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA. We have shown that considering the approach based on the framework of Fracture Functions, one could phenomenologically parametrize the neutron FFs at the input scale. In order to access the uncertainties for the obtained neutron FFs as well as the LN structure functions and cross section, associated with the uncertainties in the data, we have made an extensive use of the "Hessian method". Abstract

Universität Hamburg, Diss., 2015; DESY-THESIS 355 pp., (2015)., In this thesis the study of charm production in \ep and \pp collisions is presented. The heavy-quark masses provide a hard scale, allowing the application of perturbative QCD.\newlineA measurement of $D^{+}$-meson production in deep inelastic scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA is presented. The analysis was performed using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of $354$ $\text{pb}^{-1}$. Differential cross sections were measured as a function of virtuality $Q^2$, inelasticity $y$, transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $D^{+}$ mesons. Lifetime information was used to reduce the combinatorial background significantly. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions in the fixed-flavour-number scheme were compared to the data.\newlineThis measurement was combined with other H1 and ZEUS measurements of charm production. The combination was performed at inclusive level for the reduced charm cross sections, which were obtained from the measured visible cross sections, extrapolated to the full phase space using the shape of the theoretical predictions in the fixed-flavour-number scheme. The combination method accounts for the correlations of the systematic uncertainties among the different datasets, thus allowing cross calibration of different measurements. The combined charm data were compared to QCD predictions in various heavy-flavour schemes and used together with the inclusive production data at HERA as input for QCD analyses to determine the charm running mass in the \msbar renormalisation scheme and the optimal values of the charm-quark mass parameters in other heavy-flavour schemes.\newlineAn additional combination of the H1 and ZEUS $D^{*+}$ visible cross sections was performed to provide the combined cross sections without theory-related uncertainties from the extrapolation procedure. This combination also provides differential cross sections as a function of the $D^{*+}$ kinematic variables. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions in the fixed-flavour-number scheme were compared to the combined $D^{*+}$ cross sections and a `customised' QCD calculation was introduced in order to improve the agreement between the central values of the theoretical predictions and the data.\newlineWhile the HERA charm data are sensitive to the gluon distribution in the proton at the values of partonic fractions of the proton momenta $10^{-4}\lesssim x\lesssim 10^{-1}$, the production of charm quarks at LHCb probes the region $5 \times 10^{-6}\lesssim x \lesssim 10^{-4}$. The impact of recent LHCb measurements of heavy-flavour production on parton distribution functions was studied in a QCD analysis in the fixed-flavour-number scheme at next-to-leading order. Differential cross sections of charm and beauty production obtained by the LHCb experiment were used together with the combined inclusive and heavy-flavour production cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The heavy-flavour data of the LHCb experiment impose constraints on the gluon and sea-quark distributions at very low partonic fractions of the proton momenta. This kinematic range is currently not covered by other experimental data in QCD fits.\newlineAs the technical part of this thesis, the ZEUS Event Display program has been modified in the context of the ZEUS data preservation project to become independent of the ZEUS Software. The new program is a pure ROOT application. Abstract

Recent results on diffraction from the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA are presented. Measurement of open charm production in diffractive DIS has been performed by the H1 experiment using the event topology, given by ep → eXY, where the system X, containing at least one D*(2010) meson, is separated from a leading low-mass proton dissociative system Y by a large rapidity gap. The photoproduction of isolated photons is measured using diffractive events recorded by the ZEUS experiment. Cross sections are evaluated in the photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 5 < EγT < 15 GeV and -0:7 < ηγ < 0:9, inclusively and with a jet with transverse-energy and pseudorapidity in the ranges 4 < EjetT < 35 GeV and -1:5 < ηjet < 1:8. The exclusive deep inelastic electroproduction and photoproduction of Ψ(2S ) and J=Ψ(1S) mesons has been also studied by ZEUS. The cross-section ratio σ(Ψ(2S))=σ(J=Ψ(1S)) has been measured as a function of Q2, W and t. The results are compared to several predictions of QCD-inspired models, providing tests of the models in a region of soft to hard diffraction.

Abstract

Ninth biennial Workshop dedicated to theoretical and experimental progress in diffractive processes at high energies, Diffraction 2016, Catania, Sicily, 2 Sep 2016 - 8 Sep 2016 ; (2016)., The production of inclusive jets, dijets and trijets was investigated with the high statistics HERA II DIS data. The H1 experiment has determined the corresponding cross sections with improved experimental precision and sophisticated method of unfolding, compared to previous measurements. The results were compared with NLO QCD and NNLO QCD calculations for the first time. Signals of QCD instanton-induced processes were searched for in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering with high momentum transfer $\it Q^{2}$ by H1 collaboration. Compared to earlier publications, the limits were improved by an order of magnitude.A search for a narrow baryonic state in the $\it pK^{0}_{S}$ and $\it \overline{p}K^{0}_{S}$ system has been performed with the ZEUS detector. Measurements with the ZEUS data in DIS of isolated photons were reported, including studies of kinematic variables sensitive to the event dynamics.The measurements were compared to MC models and to theoretical calculations based on kt factorisation QCD approach.

Abstract

We discuss the recent results on the measurements of jets and hadronic final states in e ± p collisions at HERA by the ZEUS and H1 experiments. The studies of jet production are presented with the measurements of multijets in low- Q 2 region. Results of further measurements of isolated photons in different kinematic regions are provided as well as multiple results on exclusive meson production. The recently performed searches are presented with the searches of strange pentaquarks and QCD instanton induced processes.

Measurements of open charm and beauty production cross sections in ep deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections are obtained in a restricted kinematic range. Perturbative QCD calculations are compared to the combined data. Next-to-leading order QCD analysis is performed using these data together with combined inclusive HERA DIS cross sections.

Abstract

HERA was a high-energy electron/positron proton collider with a centre of mass energy of up to 320 GeV operated until summer 2007. The hadronic final state in the regime of deep-inelastic scattering as well as of photoproduction has been thoroughly investigated over a wide range of phase space with the two multi-purpose detectors H1 and ZEUS. The large available HERA data samples of about 0.5 fb−1 per experiment allowed stringent tests of quantum chromodynamics using a variety of different observables connected to the production of jets and heavy quarks. From the jet production measurements the strong coupling constant α s has been extracted with high precision. Some of the most recent results of the H1 and ZEUS collaborations are presented in this contribution.

Abstract

The production of Z 0 bosons in the reaction ep→eZ 0 p (*) , where p (*) stands for a proton or a low-mass nucleon resonance, has been studied in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496pb -1 of integrated luminosity. The Z 0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on η max max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z 0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep→eZ 0 p (*) was measured to be σ(ep→eZ 0 p (*) )=0.13±0.06(stat.)±0.01(syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. This is the first measurement of Z 0 production in ep collisions. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Measurements of heavy-quark production at HERA constrain the structure of the proton, and have provided valuable indications of perturbative QCD. In this publication measurements of heavy-flavour jet cross sections in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering (DIS), performed by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations, are presented using inclusive techniques for the signal extraction. The results are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations and found to be in reasonable agreement with theory predictions.

Abstract

A search for events with an isolated high-energy lepton and large missing transverse momentum has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using a total integrated luminosity of 504 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. The results agree well with Standard Model predictions. The cross section for production of single $W$ bosons in electron-proton collisions with unpolarised electrons is measured to be $0.89^{+0.25}_{-0.22}$ (stat.) $\pm{0.10}$ (syst.) pb., 7+17 pages, 3 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

Measurements of the cross sections for charged current deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The measurements are based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 132 pb^-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The total cross section is presented at positive and negative values of the longitudinal polarisation of the positron beams. The single-differential cross-sections ds/dQ^2, ds/dx and ds/dy are presented for Q^2 > 200 GeV^2. The reduced cross-section is presented in the kinematic range 200 < Q^2 < 60,000 GeV^2 and 0.006 < x < 0.562. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model. The results are used to determine a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson., 33 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

Recent results on single-top production via flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) are summarised. Model independent limits can be set directly for the process at both LEP and HERA and indirectly from the decays of the top quark at the TeVatron. No evidence for FCNC are observed at LEP and the TeVatron. Some events compatible with single top production are observed by the H1 collaboration at HERA, but no such events appear at ZEUS. Limits on FCNC from the different experiments are presented, with the strongest coming from the HERA and LEP experiments. PACS: 14.65.Ha Properties of Top Quarks

Abstract

Recent results in searches for high transverse momentum leptons in events with large missing transverse momentum in electron–proton collisions at HERA are reviewed. These searches have implications for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The most recent results on searches for single top production via Flavour Changing Neutral Currents are reviewed. The consistency of results from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations and prospects of discovering new physics during the final year of HERA running are discussed.

Abstract

Results from the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA on deep inelastic scattering are reviewed. The data lead to a consistent picture of a steep rise in the F_2 structure function and in the gluon density within the proton. Important new information on the partonic structure of diffraction is emerging from H1 and ZEUS. The space-like region in which the weak and electromagnetic interactions become of equal strength is being explored for the first time. A possible excess of events at high x and Q^2 compared to the expectations of the Standard Model has been observed in both experiments., 80 pages, 42 figures

Abstract

The gluon momentum density xg ( x , Q 2 ) of the proton was extracted at Q 2 = 20 GeV 2 for small values of x between 4 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 from the scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 measured recently by ZEUS in deep inelastic neutral current ep scattering at HERA. The extraction was performed in two ways. Firstly, using a global NLO fit to the ZEUS data on F 2 at low x constrained by measurementsfrom NMC at larger x ; and secondly using published approximate methods for the solution of the GLAP QCD evolution equations. Consistent results are obtained. A substantial increase of the gluon density is found at small x in comparison with the NMC result obtained at larger values of x .

This cylindrical drift chamber is designed for track reconstruction, electron identification and fast event triggering in a high beam-crossing rate, high magnetic field application.

Abstract

First measurements of cross sections for isolated prompt photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering have been made using the ZEUS detector at the HERA electron-proton collider using an integrated luminosity of 121 pb^-1. A signal for isolated photons in the transverse energy and rapidity ranges 5 < E_T^gamma < 10 GeV and -0.7 < eta^gamma < 0.9 was observed for virtualities of the exchanged photon of Q^2 > 35 GeV^2. Cross sections are presented for inclusive prompt photons and for those accompanied by a single jet in the range E_T^jet \geq 6 GeV and -1.5 \leq eta^jet < 1.8. Abstract

The European physical journal / C 76, 336(2016). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-016-4152-3, The electron–proton collisions collected by the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA comprise a unique particle physics data set, and a comprehensive range of measurements has been performed to provide new insight into the structure of the proton. The high centre of mass energy at HERA has also allowed rare processes to be studied, including the production of $\it W$ and $\it Z^{0}$ bosons and events with multiple leptons in the final state. The data have also opened up a new domain to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model including contact interactions, leptoquarks, excited fermions and a number of supersymmetric models. Abstract

The combination is presented of all inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections previously published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA for neutral and charged current $ep$ scattering for zero beam polarisation. The data were taken at proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV and an electron beam energy of 27.5 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb$^{-1}$ and span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, $Q^2$, and Bjorken $x$. The correlations of the systematic uncertainties were evaluated and taken into account for the combination. The combined cross sections were input to QCD analyses at leading order, next-to-leading order and at next-to-next-to-leading order, providing a new set of parton distribution functions, called HERAPDF2.0. Additionally, the inclusion of jet-production cross sections made a simultaneous and precise determination of parton distributions and the strong coupling constant possible. Abstract

In this paper we show the new set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) determined using new combined H1 and ZEUS data on neutral and charged current inclusive cross sections from all running periods (1994-2007). The combined data are used as the sole input to NLO and NNLO QCD analyses. The new set of PDFs is termed as HERAPDF2.0. Also we show an extended QCD analysis at NLO including the combined data on jet and charm production which enables the simultaneous determination of PDFs (HERAPDF2.0Jets) and the strong coupling constant from HERA data alone.

Abstract

HERA was the first and only ep collider. It was in operation from 1992 to 2007 and the two collaborations ZEUS and H1 collected about 0.5 fb −1 of integrated luminosity each. Inclusive data from both collaborations were combined and used to determine the set of parton distribution functions called HERAPDF2.0. The history of HERA is presented as well as the long path to the final data combination and HERAPDF2.0. The proton remains full of wonders and parton distribution functions might have nothing to do with them. The legacy of HERA are the precise ep data which can be plotted as legacy plots.

47. New measurement of inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections at HERA

Abstract

A combined measurement is presented of all inclusive deep inelastic cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations in neutral and charged current unpolarised e±p scattering at HERA. The H1 and ZEUS collaborations collected total integrated luminosities of approximately 500 pb−1 each, divided about equally between e+p and e−p scattering. They include data taken at electron (positron) beam energy of 27.5 GeV and proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV corresponding to centre-of-mass energy of 320, 300, 251 and 225 GeV respectively. This enabled the two collaborations to explore a large phase space in Bjorken x and negative four-momentum-transfer squared, Q2. The combination method takes the correlations of the systematic uncertainties into account, resulting in improved accuracy.

The H1 and ZEUS collaborations at the electron-proton collider HERA collected $\it ^\pm p$ scattering data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1 $fb^{-1}$. The data were taken at proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV and an electron beam energy of 27.5 GeV, with different electric charges and longitudinal polarisation of the electron beam. Using these data inclusive neutral and charged current deep inelastic cross sections were measured over six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentumtransfer squared, $\it Q^{2}$, and Bjorken $\it x$. A combination of all inclusive cross sections, published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA, was performed. Using these combined HERA data and the individual H1 and ZEUS data taken using the polarised electron beams, the proton structure functions $\it F_{2}, F_{2}, ^{yZ}, xF_{3}^{yZ}$ and $\it F_{L}$ were obtained, and scaling violations, electroweak unification, and polarisation effects in the charged current process were demonstrated. The combined cross sections were used as a sole input to QCD analyses at leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading orders, providing a new set of parton distribution functions, denoted as HERAPDF2.0. An extension of the analysis by including HERA data on charm and jet production allowed a simultaneous determination of parton distributions and the strong coupling.

Abstract

The measurements of the reduced cross-sections for e + p deep inelastic scattering at high inelasticities y for three different centre-of-mass energies, 318, 251 and 225 GeV have been extended to lower momentum transferred squared, Q2. The analysis of satellite vertex events allows one to extend the cross-section measurement at high y down to Q2 = 4.5 GeV2, substantially lower that the previously published cross-section measurement from which the longitudinal structure function, FL, was extracted.

Abstract

A new method is employed to measure the neutral current cross-section up to Bjorken x values of 1 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 187 pb − 1 of electron–proton collisions and 142 pb − 1 of positron–proton collisions, at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. Cross-sections have been extracted for Q 2 > 575 GeV2. A much improved precision with respect to the previous ZEUS publication, which used only 16.7 pb − 1 of electron–proton collisions and 65.1 pb − 1 of positron–proton collisions, is achieved, owing to the large data sample and improved kinematic reconstruction methods. The measurement is well-described by different theory predictions.
