1. Improving Technical Outcome in Osteochondral Allograft Transplantation of the Femoral Trochlea: The Role of Contoured Guides, Experience Level, Graft Size, and Graft Position

Abstract

BackgroundThe use of coring instrumentation for osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation of the femoral trochlea is challenging due to the complex topography of this anatomical area.PurposeWe sought to determine the effect of flat guides versus guides contoured to the surface of the trochlea on graft step-off in trochlear OCAs performed on a foam bone model. We also determined the effect of surgeon experience level and graft size on step-off.Study designControlled laboratory study.MethodsAllograft harvesters were produced in 3 different sequential sizes with either a flat or a contoured undersurface. The guides matched one another in all aspects of shape and size except for the undersurface contour. The contoured undersurface generally matched the surface of the bone model trochlea but was not customized to that surface. A total of 72 foam femora were obtained. Identical trochlear stellate lesions of 3 different sizes (small, medium, and large) were created using 3-dimensional printed surface templates. A total of 6 surgeons (3 attending and 3 resident surgeons) performed OCAs of each trochlear lesion. Each surgeon performed 1 graft for each size and each guide type (n = 6 per surgeon). A specialized digital caliper was prepared that allowed the measurement of graft step-off to within 0.01 mm at a distance of 5 mm between the 2 sensors. The measurements were performed at 8 positions around the clockface of the grafts.ResultsGrafts performed with the contoured guides had a mean step-off of 0.43 ± 0.37 mm. Grafts performed with the flat guides had a mean step-off of 0.74 ± 0.78 mm (P < .0001). Experience level did not have a significant effect on graft step-off (P = .81). There was no identifiable pattern indicating higher step-off at any one position on the clockface.ConclusionIn this study, contoured grafts had significantly lower step-offs compared with flat guides. Experience level, clockface position, and graft size did not affect step-off.

4. Increased juvenile native fish abundance following a major flood in an Arizona river

Abstract

Spring floods trigger spawning in many native fishes of the desert Southwest (USA), but less is known about fish community response when native fishes are rare. Here, we document change to native and nonnative fish captures and instream habitat features following a decade-high flooding event (2019) in the Verde River (AZ) where native fish captures were rare in the years pre-flood. Using prepositioned areal electrofishing devices (PAEDs), we sampled the fish community at 90 sampling units pre-flood (2017) and resampled those same units post-flood (2019) to compare and identify changes to catch and habitat features. Relative abundance of native fishes increased from 0.6% pre-flood (0.01 fish/PAED) to 53.0% post-flood (1.66 fish/PAED) and was largely attributable to the presence of juvenile Roundtail Chub Gila robusta (≤ 70 mm total length (TL)) and juvenile Sonora Sucker Catostomus insignis (≤ 100 mm TL). Juvenile Desert Sucker Catostomus clarkii experienced a lesser increase. One adult native fish was captured in 2017 and adult native fishes were absent from 2019 sampling. The catch of adult/subadult Common Carp Cyprinus carpio (> 100 mm TL) declined; however, this could be related to reservoir management and not the flood. The abundance of all size-classes of Black Bass Micropterus spp., Red Shiner Cyprinella lutrensis and other nonnative fishes did not change. The majority (97%) of juvenile native fishes were captured at the uppermost sampling reach. A 54% reduction to canopy cover across all sampling reaches and an increase of fine sediments at the most downstream reach demonstrates how floods can restructure the river environment. This case-study adds evidence that protection of spring floods is vital to the persistence and recolonization of fishes native to the desert Southwest, especially where they are rare. The continued presence of nonnative species may preclude juvenile native fishes from recruiting to adults.

Abstract

Femme theory suggests that femmephobia, or anti-feminine attitudes, may be connected to gender essentialist beliefs (e.g. beliefs about gender/sex identity as biologically determined and immutable) and gender-related political ideologies (e.g. endorsement of traditional gender norms, gender-specific system justification). We tested these links in a quantitative online survey (N = 250). We hypothesised that femmephobic attitudes would be (1) significantly positively related to gender-specific system justification, gender essentialism, and traditional gender values and (2) significantly negatively related to social constructionist beliefs about gender. Femmephobic attitudes were evaluated through responses to a vignette, in which participants were asked to imagine that they overheard a femmephobic conversation. We found that higher essentialist beliefs, traditional gender values, and gender-system justification and lower social constructionist beliefs predicted femmephobic attitudes. These findings contribute to our understanding of how femmephobic attitudes are connected to people’s beliefs about the nature of gender and gender-related political ideologies. Abstract

Many actors report, anecdotally, a phenomenon known as a “showmance,” whereby actors develop romantic and/or sexual feelings for acting partners, often in the process of portraying romance onstage together. Because acting partners spend so much time together and may be engaging in several activities that facilitate emotional and physical closeness, it is possible that performing intimacy may influence feelings of actual intimacy. In this study, we aimed to understand the association between the type of onstage relationship that an actor portrays with their acting partner and the degree of intimacy—specifically nurturance and eroticism—that they feel toward this partner. We surveyed actors (amateur and professional) about their past theatrical experiences performing with a romantic acting partner ( romantic/intimate), a non-romantic but still intimate partner ( non-romantic/intimate; e.g., friendship, parent-child), and a non-romantic and non-intimate partner ( non-romantic/non-intimate; e.g., strangers, colleagues). We found that actors reported significantly higher levels of nurturance when recalling romantic and non-romantic/intimate onstage roles, compared to non-romantic/non-intimate roles. We also found that actors reported significantly higher levels of eroticism when recalling romantic onstage roles compared to other roles. Finally, we found that actors reported having experienced a significantly greater proportion of romantic/sexual feelings across their acting careers toward romantic acting partners, compared to other acting partners. The findings of this study provide a better understanding of the bidirectional relationship between behaviour and affect, as well as the predictors of intimacy, through a theatrical lens.

16. University Intramural Sport Administrators' Perceptions of Gender Modifications in Intramural Coed Flag Football

Abstract

Coed sport environments can be paradoxical settings where pre-existing gender biases influence participants' enjoyment and success. Furthermore, gendered messages and stereotypes as well as low expectations for females within coed sports can create participation barriers by reducing feelings of confidence and performance. Within university intramural sport programs, administrators have a significant role in determining participation opportunities and experiences. From a critical perspective, this investigation examined administrators' perspectives about coed intramural flag football gender modifications. Specifically, four research questions guided this study: (1) How do intramural sport administrators view coed flag football gender modifications?; (2) To what extent do intramural sport administrators perceive gender modifications to impact coed flag football environments?; (3) What level of awareness do intramural sport administrators have about the gendered messages of coed flag football gender modifications?; and (4) To what extent are intramural sport administrators willing to modify their perceptions of the rules in light of critical questioning? Qualitative interviews were used to obtain the perspectives of 12 intramural administrators from across the USA. Administrators reported that coed gender modifications impacted perceptions about female ability, often by sending messages of inequity. Moreover, administrators revealed that the modifications created competitive strategy that often diminished the integrity of the game and undermined perceptions of female ability. Findings also indicated that administrators were highly influenced by previously existing gender stereotypes, leading to an endorsement of the modifications. Endorsements were accompanied by questioning of the rules but reluctance to enact changes. These findings elucidate the importance of scrutinizing the existence and application of coed gender modifications. Furthermore, engaging flag football participant feedback on the specific attributes of the coed modifications is important to better understand the needs of female populations. Lastly, eliminating modifications may help diminish the gendered messages that currently exist within coed flag football.

Abstract

Background: The use of coring instrumentation for osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation of the femoral trochlea is challenging due to the complex topography of this anatomical area. Purpose: We sought to determine the effect of flat guides versus guides contoured to the surface of the trochlea on graft step-off in trochlear OCAs performed on a foam bone model. We also determined the effect of surgeon experience level and graft size on step-off. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Allograft harvesters were produced in 3 different sequential sizes with either a flat or a contoured undersurface. The guides matched one another in all aspects of shape and size except for the undersurface contour. The contoured undersurface generally matched the surface of the bone model trochlea but was not customized to that surface. A total of 72 foam femora were obtained. Identical trochlear stellate lesions of 3 different sizes (small, medium, and large) were created using 3-dimensional printed surface templates. A total of 6 surgeons (3 attending and 3 resident surgeons) performed OCAs of each trochlear lesion. Each surgeon performed 1 graft for each size and each guide type (n = 6 per surgeon). A specialized digital caliper was prepared that allowed the measurement of graft step-off to within 0.01 mm at a distance of 5 mm between the 2 sensors. The measurements were performed at 8 positions around the clockface of the grafts. Results: Grafts performed with the contoured guides had a mean step-off of 0.43 ± 0.37 mm. Grafts performed with the flat guides had a mean step-off of 0.74 ± 0.78 mm ( P < .0001). Experience level did not have a significant effect on graft step-off ( P = .81). There was no identifiable pattern indicating higher step-off at any one position on the clockface. Conclusion: In this study, contoured grafts had significantly lower step-offs compared with flat guides. Experience level, clockface position, and graft size did not affect step-off.

Citizen science programs, like FrogWatch USA, offer simple training guidelines to collect field data, which provides records across broad geographical locations, allowing for the study of population trends on a large scale. Due to the relative ease of implementing the protocol, this program can easily be used in undergraduate and high school courses to provide an active learning environment and independent research opportunities. Here, we describe how FrogWatch USA call surveys were paired with traditional trapping surveys and conclude that call surveys can be useful in ecological monitoring. We suggest recommendations on how this program can be utilized in different settings and across disciplines.
