- Abstract
This Collective Article presents new information about the occurrence of 23 marine taxa that belong to five Phyla: two Chlorophyta, one Annelida, six Mollusca, three Arthropoda, eleven Chordata (one Ascidiacea, one Elasmobranchii and nine Teleostei) and extending from the Western Mediterranean to the Levantine Sea. All these records were reported from nine countries from the western to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, with a broad biogeographical coverage as follows: Spain: first records of the sacoglossans Cyerce graeca and Placida tardyi for the Alboran Sea and first records of the nudibranch Marionia gemmii for the Mediterranean waters of Spain; first records of nudibranch Algarvia alba in the Mediterranean Sea. Italy: First report of the long-legged crab Paragalene longicrura, a further new Mediterranean record of the rare offshore rockfish Pontinus kuhlii, first documented record of the spiny butterfly ray Gymnura altavela in Sardinia (Tyrrhenian Sea), new record of the red‐spotted wrasse Lappanella fasciata from the Messina Strait, first documented record of the rarely observed brown moray Gymnothorax unicolor in the Ionian coast, first record of the colonial ascidian Botrylloides israeliensis, first record of the Morocco dentex Dentex maroccanus, first record of mottled shore crab Pachygrapsus maurus and of an adult specimen of barracudina Lestidiops sphyrenoides in the Adriatic Sea, and further new Mediterranean records of Ross worm Sabellaria spinulosa along the same coast. Tunisia: second record of smalleye squaretail Tetragonurus cuvieri from the African Mediterranean coast. Slovenia: first records of the sea slug Trapania graeffei and Melanochlamys wildpretii, with the last one also representing the northernmost finding of this species. Croatia: northernmost record of the endangered twaite shad Alosa fallax in the Adriatic coast. Albania: first records of the Mediterranean spearfish Tetrapturus belone. Türkiye: first record from the Aegean coasts for Türki

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in species of commercial interest is well reported. This work is a follow up of that carried out by Martinelli et al 2021, in which among others 11 individuals of Norway lobster sampled in the Off Ancona study area (Adriatic Sea) were found to be contaminated by MPs in gut, hepatopancreas and muscular edible part (tail). In this new trial, 4 lobsters from the same study area were analysed considering 3 different anatomical compartments: hepatopancreas, tail and claw. To evaluate external contamination during samples preparation, procedural blanks were processed. The entire hepatopancreas was extracted from the animal in a protected environment. This time only a dissected portion of the tail muscle was used for the analysis (without exoskeleton), while one claw per individual was accurately washed with MillQ water before being processed (muscle together with exoskeleton). The analyses showed that the hepatopancreas of all individuals were contaminated by a total of 14 MP particles, in shape of both fibers and fragments, ranging from 50 to 300 μm and consisting in 4 different polymers (Polycaprolactone, Polyester, Polyethylene, Polypropylene). MPs ranging from 20 to 50 μm were found in all the 4 analysed portions of tail muscles: in total 7 fragments consisting in 5 different polymers (Polyvinylchloride, Polyester, Polyethylene terephthalate, Polypropylene and Polyurethane). In the claw samples, only 1 fragment of Polyester and 1 of Polyethylene were found in two different individuals among the 4 analysed. Concerning the hepatopancreas, the main difference with the previous study is a much lower incidence of MP fragments ranging from 50 to 100 μm. The results for tail muscles are not comparable between the two studies considering the different amount of tissue analysed, however MPs were found again in all the new samples, thus confirming their presence in edible tissues. DREDGING (Fisheries) , *TRAWLING , *ECOSYSTEM health , *MARINE resources , *RESOURCE exploitation , *GEOGRAPHICAL distribution of fishes , *MARINE ecology , *ECOSYSTEMS - Abstract
Marine resources exploitation through bottom trawling affects marine ecosystems; thus, management should consider the presence of sensitive species as ecosystem health indicators. Epibenthic organisms such as sea pens are widely used to assess benthic conditions, as their populations are declining where trawling is intense. The Pomo/Jabuka Pits fishing ground in the Adriatic Sea, subject to various management measures over the years, is a nursery for European hake and hosts a small, but dense, population of Norway lobster and a remarkable abundance of pink shrimp. The sea pen Funiculina quadrangularis shares its habitat (sandy-muddy bottoms) with these crustaceans. Through UnderWater TeleVision surveys conducted from 2012 to 2019, F. quadrangularis abundance and distribution were quantified in relation to changes in the spatiotemporal distribution of fishing efforts. The average density (n/m2) of colonies was calculated for three periods: BEFORE implementation of measures (before 1 July 2015), during an INTERMEDIATE period in which limitations changed (2 July 2015 to 31 August 2017), and AFTER the implementation of a Fishery Restricted Area (from 1 September 2017). F. quadrangularis revealed an increase in density where fisheries were closed, even after a short period. This showed how management measures can positively influence epibenthic communities and that sea pens can be indicators of impact and/or recovery of habitats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
