1. Variations of the atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations, sources, and health risk and the direct medical costs of lung cancer around the Bohai Sea against a background of pollution prevention and control in China

Abstract

The Bohai Sea (BS) region, an area of China that is severely polluted with atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has received wide attention in recent decades. To characterize the variations of the concentrations and sources of PAHs from June 2014 to May 2019, 15 PAH congeners (Σ15PAHs) were measured in atmospheric samples (N = 228) collected at 12 sites around the BS, and the health risk and direct medical costs associated with lung cancer caused by exposure to PAHs were also estimated. The annual daily average concentration of Σ15PAHs was 56.78 ± 4.75 ng m−3, which was dominated by low molecular weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs) containing three rings (58.7 ± 7.8 %). During the 5-year sampling period, the atmospheric Σ15PAHs concentration reduced by 17.5 % for the whole BS region, with an especially large drop of 51.7 % observed in the tightly controlled area of Tianjin (TJ), which was mainly due to a decrease in the concentration of high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) containing five or six rings. Generally, the concentration of Σ15PAHs was highest in winter and lowest in summer, which can mainly be attributed to the change in LMW-PAH concentration. Based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, PAHs in the BS region were mainly ascribed to coal combustion and biomass burning. The PAH contributions of coal combustion and motor vehicles showed different trends for the BS region (PAHs from coal combustion rose by 7.2 % and PAHs from motor vehicles fell by 22.4 %) and for TJ (PAHs from coal combustion fell by 12.6 % and PAHs from motor vehicles rose by 6.9 %). The incidence of lung cancer (ILCR) caused by exposure to atmospheric PAHs decreased by 74.1 % and 91.6 % from 2014 to 2018 in the BS region and in TJ, respectively. This was mainly due to the decrease in the concentration of highly toxic HMW-PAHs and was reflected in USD 10.7 million of savings in direct medical costs of lung cancer caused by exposure to PAHs, which represent a decrease of 46.1 % compared to the corresponding costs before air pollution prevention and control was implemented around the BS. There was an even higher reduction in medical costs of 54.5 % in TJ. Hence, this study proves that implementing pollution prevention and control not only effectively reduced the concentration of pollutants and the risks caused by them, but it also significantly reduced the medical costs of diseases caused by the corresponding exposure.

Abstract

The nitrogen stable isotope composition (δ15N) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) is a powerful indicator of source apportionment of atmospheric NOx; however, δ15N–NOx values emitted from ships have not been reported, affecting the accuracy of source partitioning of atmospheric NOx in coastal zones with a lot of vessel activity. In addition, δ15N–NOx values from ship emissions could also be important for source apportionment of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in remote ocean regions. This study systemically analysed the δ15N–NOx variability and main influencing factors of ship emissions. The results showed that δ15N–NOx values from ships, which were calculated by weighting the emission values from the main engine and auxiliary engine of the vessel, ranged from −35.8 ‰ to 2.04 ‰ with a mean ± standard deviation of −18.5 ± 10.9 ‰. The δ15N–NOx values increased monotonically with the ongoing tightening of emission regulations, presenting a significantly negative logarithmic relationship with NOx concentrations (p). The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system was the most important factor affecting changes in δ15N–NOx values, followed by the ship category, fuel types, and operation states of ships. Based on the relationship between δ15N–NOx values and emission regulations observed in this investigation, a mass-weighted model to compute accurate assessments over time was developed, and the temporal variation in δ15N–NOx values from ship emissions in the international merchant fleet was evaluated. These simulated δ15N–NOx values can be used to select suitable δ15N–NOx values for a more accurate assessment, including the contribution of ship-emitted exhaust to atmospheric NOx and its influence on atmospheric nitrate (NO3-) air quality and nitrogen deposition studies.

3. Brown carbon's emission factors and optical characteristics in household biomass burning: developing a novel algorithm for estimating the contribution of brown carbon

Abstract

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of brown carbon (BrC) in various fields, particularly relating to climate change. The incomplete combustion of biomass in open and contained burning conditions is believed to be a significant contributor to primary BrC emissions. So far, few studies have reported the emission factors of BrC from biomass burning, and few studies have specifically addressed which form of light-absorbing carbon, such as black carbon (BC) or BrC, plays a leading role in the total solar light absorption by biomass burning. In this study, the optical integrating sphere (IS) approach was used, with carbon black and humic acid sodium salt as reference materials for BC and BrC, respectively, to distinguish BrC from BC on filter samples. A total of 11 widely used biomass types in China were burned in a typical stove to simulate the real household combustion process. (i) Large differences existed in the emission factors of BrC (EFBrC) among the tested biomass fuels, with a geometric mean EFBrC of 0.71 g kg−1 (0.24–2.09). Both the plant type (herbaceous or ligneous) and burning style (raw or briquetted biomass) might influence the value of EFBrC. The observed reduction in the emissions of light-absorbing carbon (LAC) confirmed an additional benefit of biomass briquetting in climate change mitigation. (ii) The calculated annual BrC emissions from China's household biomass burning amounted to 712 Gg, higher than the contribution from China's household coal combustion (592 Gg). (iii) The average absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) was (2.46±0.53), much higher than that of coal-chunk combustion smoke (AAE=1.30±0.32). (iv) For biomass smoke, the contribution of absorption by BrC to the total absorption by BC+BrC across the strongest solar spectral range of 350–850 nm (FBrC) was 50.8 %. This is nearly twice that for BrC in smoke from household coal combustion (26.5 %). (v) Based on this study, a novel algorithm was developed for estimating the FBrC for perhaps any combustion source (FBrC=0.5519ln⁡AAE+0.0067, R2=0.999); the FBrC value for all global biomass burning (open+contained) (FBrC-entire) was 64.5 % (58.5 %–69.9 %). This corroborates the dominant role of BrC in total biomass burning absorption. Therefore, the inclusion of BrC is not optional but indispensable when considering the climate energy budget, particularly for biomass burning emissions (contained and open).

Abstract

GPRs (Ground Penetrating Radar) are widely adopted in underground space survey and mapping, because of their advantages of fast data acquisition, convenience, high imaging resolution and NDT (Non Destructive Testing) inspection. However, at present, the automation of the GPR data post-processing is low and the identification of underground objects needs expert interpretation. The heavy manual interpretation labor limits the GPR applications in large-scale urban scenarios. According to the latest research, it is still an unsolved problem to detect targets or defects in GPR data automatically and needs further exploration. In this paper, we propose a deep learning method for real-time detection of underground targets from GPR data. Seven typical targets in urban underground space are identified and labelled to construct the training dataset. The constructed dataset is consist of 489 labelled samples including rainwater wells, cables, metal/nonmetal pipes, sparse/dense steel reinforcement, voids. The training dataset is further augmented to produce more samples. DarkNet53 convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained using the constructed training dataset including realistic data and augmented data to extract features of the buried objects. And then the end-to-end YOLO detection framework is used to classify and locate the seven specific categories buried targets in the GPR data in real time. Experiments show that the automatic real-time detection method proposed in this paper can effectively detect the buried objects in the ground penetrating radar image in real time at Shenzhen test site (typical urban road scene).

Abstract

Abstract Elves are a class of transient luminous events, with a radial extent typically greater than 250 km, that occur in the lower ionosphere above strong electrical storms. We report the observation of 1,598 elves, from 2014 to 2016, recorded with unprecedented time resolution (100 ns) using the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Cosmic‐Ray Observatory. The Auger Observatory is located in the Mendoza province of Argentina with a viewing footprint for elve observations of 3·106 km 2, reaching areas above the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Córdoba region, which is known for severe convective thunderstorms. Primarily designed for ultrahigh energy cosmic‐ray observations, the Auger FD turns out to be very sensitive to the ultraviolet emission in elves. The detector features modified Schmidt optics with large apertures resulting in a field of view that spans the horizon, and year‐round operation on dark nights with low moonlight background, when the local weather is favorable. The measured light profiles of 18% of the elve events have more than one peak, compatible with intracloud activity. Within the 3‐year sample, 72% of the elves correlate with the far‐field radiation measurements of the World Wide Lightning Location Network. The Auger Observatory plans to continue operations until at least 2025, including elve observations and analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this observatory is the only facility on Earth that measures elves with year‐round operation and full horizon coverage.

Abstract

An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays.

Abstract

We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg⁡(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavored as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth. 8. Source apportionment of PM2.5 at a regional background site in North China using PMF linked with radiocarbon analysis: insight into the contribution of biomass burning

Abstract

Source apportionment of fine particles (PM2.5) at a background site in North China in the winter of 2014 was done using statistical analysis, radiocarbon (14C) measurement and positive matrix factorization (PMF) modeling. Results showed that the concentration of PM2.5 was 77.6 ± 59.3 µg m−3, of which sulfate (SO42−) concentration was the highest, followed by nitrate (NO3−), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and ammonium (NH4+). As demonstrated by backward trajectory, more than half of the air masses during the sampling period were from the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region, followed by Mongolia and the Shandong Peninsula. Cluster analysis of chemical species suggested an obvious signal of biomass burning in the PM2.5 from the Shandong Peninsula, while the PM2.5 from the BTH region showed a vehicle emission pattern. This finding was further confirmed by the 14C measurement of OC and EC in two merged samples. The 14C result indicated that biogenic and biomass burning emission contributed 59 ± 4 and 52 ± 2 % to OC and EC concentrations, respectively, when air masses originated from the Shandong Peninsula, while the contributions fell to 46 ± 4 and 38 ± 1 %, respectively, when the prevailing wind changed and came from the BTH region. The minimum deviation between source apportionment results from PMF and 14C measurement was adopted as the optimal choice of the model exercises. Here, two minor overestimates with the same range (3 %) implied that the PMF result provided a reasonable source apportionment of the regional PM2.5 in this study. Based on the PMF modeling, eight sources were identified; of these, coal combustion, biomass burning and vehicle emission were the main contributors of PM2.5, accounting for 29.6, 19.3 and 15.9 %, respectively. Compared with overall source apportionment, the contributions of vehicle emission, mineral dust, coal combustion and biomass burning increased when air masses came from the BTH region, Mongolia and the Shandong Peninsula, respectively. Since coal combustion and vehicle emission have been considered as the leading emission sources to be controlled for improving air quality, biomass burning was highlighted in the present study.

9. Limiting Performance Analysis of Underwater Shock Isolation of a System with Biodynamic Response Using Genetic Algorithm

Abstract

Biodynamic response of shipboard crew to underwater shock is of a major concern to navies. An underwater shock can produce very high accelerations, resulting in severe human injuries aboard a battleship. Protection of human bodies from underwater shock is implemented by installing onboard isolators. In this paper, the optimal underwater shock isolation to protect human bodies is studied. A simple shock-structure-isolator-human interaction model is first constructed. The model incorporates the effect of fluid-structure interaction, biodynamic response of human body, isolator influence. Based on this model, the optimum shock isolation is then formulated. The performance index and restriction are defined. Thirdly, GA (genetic algorithm) is employed to solve the formulated optimization problem. GA is a powerful evolutionary optimization scheme suitable for large-scale and multi-variable optimization problems that are otherwise hard to be solved by conventional methods. A brief introduction to GA is given in the paper. Finally, the method is applied to an example problem and the limiting performance characteristic is obtained.

10. A stochastic model leading to various particle mass distributions including the RRSB distribution

Abstract

Modern particle size statistics uses many different statistical distributions, but these distributions are empirical approximations for theoretically unknown relationships. This also holds true for the famous RRSB (Rosin-Rammler-Sperling-Bennett) distribution. Based on the compound Poisson process, this paper introduces a simple stochastic model that leads to a general product form of particle mass distributions. The beauty of this product form is that its two factors characterize separately the two main components of samples of particles, namely, individual particle masses and total particle number. The RRSB distribution belongs to the class of distributions following the new model. Its simple product form can be a starting point for developing new particle mass distributions. The model is applied to the statistical analysis of samples of blast-produced fragments measured by hand, which enables a precise investigation of the mass-size relationship. This model-based analysis leads to plausible estimates of the mass and size factors and helps to understand the influence of blasting conditions on fragment-mass distributions.

Abstract

With the process of agricultural modernization, energy consumption in China’s agriculture has increased significantly these years. Based on this context, this study tries to investigate the rebound effect of China's agricultural energy consumption, and how the popularization of agricultural machinery impacts on energy rebound rate. Elasticity analysis and data envelopment analysis based on meta-frontier are used to conduct the research, which can make the energy rebound rate more accurate compared with previous studies. Some important findings are obtained based on these methods. First, it confirms that the energy consumption in China’s agricultural sector has significant rebound effect due to technical progress, which averages 0.7215 in short term and 0.5283 in long term. This indicates that the improvement of energy efficiency can only achieve 27.85 and 47.17% of the expected energy-saving target in the short and long term. Second, there is a distinct difference in energy rebound rate in China’s different regions, the eastern area has been always far ahead of central and western regions, which implies that it is more difficult for eastern region to achieve energy saving relying on technological progress. Third, the population of mechanization increased the energy rebound rate by 0.0002 temporarily and 0.0004 permanently in the research sample. Based on these research results, some important policy implications are recommended to reduce energy rebound rate for China’s agricultural sector.

Abstract

In this paper, we conduct an experimental study on the cavity evolution behind a hydrophobic sphere entering the water. It is found that there is a correlation between splash and cavity evolution. Two dominant regimes for cavity pinch-off, including hydrostatic pressure and pressure pulsation inside cavity, are confirmed. When the splash is removed by a guard, the cavity pinch-off is dominated by hydrostatic pressure. The theoretical model is well consistent with the experimental results, including the cavity profile and the dimensionless pinch-off depth. However, when the splash domes, the theoretical solution fails with the increase in the effect of pressure pulsation inside the closed cavity. With the increase in the Froude number Fr, the splash closure most significantly impacts the necking position. The impact of the splash closure is dependent of Fr, and there is a critical value of Frcri separating the deep pinch-off into two regimes. The critical value of Frcri = 134 is theoretically proposed, which is a reasonable predication for the present experimental observations. In addition, the expansion rate of cavity volume is measured to confirm the transition of distinct regimes. Based on our theoretical analysis, the critical expansion rate is determined as 4.9, which agrees well with present experimental result 4.6. Distinct pinch-off regimes significantly impact the subsequent cavity evolution and the forces on sphere. A deep seal controlled by hydrostatic pressure is constantly accompanied by severe cavity resonance and a dramatic decrease in the cavity length, whereas pinch-off controlled by pressure pulsation leads to weak ripples.

Abstract

The time and location of the 1,598 verified and reconstructed elves, used for the analysis showcased in this paper, are publicly available on the website of the Pierre Auger Observatory (https://www.auger.org/ index.php/science/data). We wish to thank the World Wide Lightning Location Network (http://wwlln.net), a collaboration among over 50 universities and institutions, for providing the lightning location data used in this paper. We acknowledge Robert Marshall for providing one of the most advanced elve simulations to the public, a key tool in understanding the elves observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory. The successful installation, commissioning, and operation of the Pierre Auger Observatory would not have been possible without the strong commitment and effort from the technical and administrative staff in Malargüe., Elves are a class of transient luminous events, with a radial extent typically greater than 250 km, that occur in the lower ionosphere above strong electrical storms. We report the observation of 1,598 elves, from 2014 to 2016, recorded with unprecedented time resolution (100 ns) using the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Cosmic-Ray Observatory. The Auger Observatory is located in the Mendoza province of Argentina with a viewing footprint for elve observations of 3 · 106 km2, reaching areas above the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Córdoba region, which is known for severe convective thunderstorms. Primarily designed for ultrahigh energy cosmic-ray observations, the Auger FD turns out to be very sensitive to the ultraviolet emission in elves. The detector features modified Schmidt optics with large apertures resulting in a field of view that spans the horizon, and year-round operation on dark nights with low moonlight background, when the local weather is favorable. The measured light profiles of 18% of the elve events have more than one peak, compatible with intracloud activity. Within the 3-year sample, 72% of the elves correlate with the far-field radiation measurements of the World Wide Lightning Location Network. The Auger Observatory plans to continue operations until at least 2025, including elve observations and analysis. 26. A New Rock Physics Model of Shale on the Theory of Micro-Nano Pores

Abstract

Summary As the main storage space of shale reservoir, micro-nano pores have a great influence on the overall elastic property of shale. As a special type of organic mineral in shale, the state of kerogen in shale varies with maturity, meanwhile, kerogen is also the primary place for the growth of micro-nano pores. Conventional shale rock physics model cannot reflect the role of micro-nano pores, thus, we adopt a theory of micro-nano pore to describe its characteristics. Considering the micro-nanometer pores and the state of kerogen at different maturity, we establish a new rock physical model by applying the micro-nano pore model, anisotropic SCA-DEM model, anisotropic Eshelby-Cheng model and Brown-Korringa solid substitution equation. The sensitivity analysis show that the micro-nano pores have the greatest effect on the mature shale, while kerogen and clay have the least effect on the overmature shale.

27. Frequency-Dependent AVO Inversion for Viscoelastic Solid-Fluid Decoupling Factor

Abstract

Summary Frequency-dependent amplitude variation with offsets (FAVO) inversion is a popular method for the estimation of the frequency-dependent elastic parameters to guide fluid discrimination. However, current frequency-dependent AVO inversion approaches usually begin with elasticity theory and lack the consideration of the viscosity of the oil/gas reservoirs. A fluid discrimination approach is initially proposed by incorporating the viscoelasticity and relevant FAVO inversion. Starting from viscoelasticity and rock physics theory, a frequency-dependent viscoelastic solid-liquid decoupling fluid factor is firstly constructed and verified to be more sensitive in fluid discrimination by comparison with other popular fluid factors. And then, a novel reflectivity equation is derived in terms of the viscoelastic solid-liquid decoupling fluid factor. More important, the novel derived reflectivity is frequency dependent due to the involved the viscoelasticity theory, which make the derivation of the equation to frequency is more grounded by comparison with the direct derivation of the elastic reflectivity on frequency with the conventional elastic reflectivity equations. Finally, a pragmatic frequency-dependent inversion method is introduced to verify the feasibility of the equation for frequency-dependent viscoelastic solid-liquid decoupling fluid factor prediction. Synthetic and field data examples demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the proposed approach in fluid discrimination.

28. Upregulation of long noncoding RNA LEF1-AS1 predicts a poor prognosis in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract

Recent studies have suggested that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in various tumors. The present research was designed to examine the prognostic values of a newly identified lncRNA, lncRNA LEF1-AS1 (LEF1-AS1), in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).The relative levels of LEF1-AS1 in ESCC tissues and normal esophageal tissues were examined by applying quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR). The relations between LEF1-AS1 expressions and clinical factors were analyzed by conducting the Chi-square test. The Kaplan-Meier assay was used for assays of the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) dates. Univariate and multivariate analyses were applied for the identification of the independent prognostic factors for ESCC.We showed that LEF1-AS1 was distinctly upregulated in ESCC tissues compared with the matched normal tissues (p0.01). Higher levels of LEF1-AS1 were associated with lymph nodes metastasis (p = 0.009) and clinical stage (p = 0.008). Clinical investigation revealed that ESCC patients with high LEF1-AS1 level showed a significant shorter 5-year OS (p = 0.0028) and DFS (p = 0.0025). Multivariate analyses confirmed LEF1-AS1 as an independent prognostic parameter indicating unfavorable clinical prognosis for ESCC patients.The present study suggested that LEF1-AS1 could be a novel ESCC-related lncRNA involved in the clinical progression of ESCC, which may be used as a potential predictor.

Abstract

GPRs (Ground Penetrating Radar) are widely adopted in underground space survey and mapping, because of their advantages of fast data acquisition, convenience, high imaging resolution and NDT (Non Destructive Testing) inspection. However, at present, the automation of the GPR data post-processing is low and the identification of underground objects needs expert interpretation. The heavy manual interpretation labor limits the GPR applications in large-scale urban scenarios. According to the latest research, it is still an unsolved problem to detect targets or defects in GPR data automatically and needs further exploration. In this paper, we propose a deep learning method for real-time detection of underground targets from GPR data. Seven typical targets in urban underground space are identified and labelled to construct the training dataset. The constructed dataset is consist of 489 labelled samples including rainwater wells, cables, metal/nonmetal pipes, sparse/dense steel reinforcement, voids. The training dataset is further augmented to produce more samples. DarkNet53 convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained using the constructed training dataset including realistic data and augmented data to extract features of the buried objects. And then the end-to-end YOLO detection framework is used to classify and locate the seven specific categories buried targets in the GPR data in real time. Experiments show that the automatic real-time detection method proposed in this paper can effectively detect the buried objects in the ground penetrating radar image in real time at Shenzhen test site (typical urban road scene).

Abstract

An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. 31. Expression and prognostic significance of long noncoding RNA AK001796 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract

Previous study has reported that long noncoding RNA AK001796 (AK001796) functions as a tumor promoter in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, its clinical in ESCC patients remains largely unclear. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic value of AK001796 in ESCC patients.The expression levels of AK001796 in ESCC tissues and matched normal tissues were detected by RT-PCR. Association between AK001796 levels and clinicopathological factors was also analyzed by chi-square test. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. The predictors for OS and DFS were assessed by univariate analysis and multivariate analysis using Cox's proportional hazards model.We found that AK001796 was elevated in human ESCC samples compared with the adjacent normal tissues (p0.01), and the high level of AK001796 expression was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis (p=0.032) and advanced UICC stage (p=0.016). Interestingly, Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that patients with high AK001796 expression had a significantly lower OS (p=0.010) and DFS (p=0.001). Moreover, we showed that AK001796 was an independent poor prognostic factor for OS and DFS in ESCC patients through univariate and multivariate analysis.Our data provide important evidence that AK001796 may be a useful biomarker of advanced progression and poor prognosis of ESCC.

32. Seismic Wave Velocity Attenuation and Dispersion in the Patchy Saturated Model with Pores and Cracks

Abstract

Summary Seismic wave attenuation and dispersion are caused by the interaction of rock skeleton and pore fluid properties in fluid-containing porous media. A lot of studies have been done on seismic wave attenuation and dispersion theory at different scales. However, it is still a hot topic for the attenuation and dispersion laws of seismic waves when multi-scale interactions occur. In this paper, two novel models are established by introducing the penny-shaped crack structure and the pore-crack structure based on a patchy saturated model. Under the action of external forces, there will be local and ‘squirt’ flow between cracks and pores. And the saturated bulk modulus of the solid will change impacted by the squirt flow. From this, we analyzed the attenuation and dispersion of the proposed two models. There are two attenuation peaks, one with a lower principal frequency indicating the effect of pores and cracks, and the other representing the effect of the White layered medium.

Abstract

Summary Fracture parameters including fracture density and orientation play a critical role in civil engineering, hydraulic engineering and exploitation. However, it nowadays still remains challenging to concisely and stably estimate those fracture parameters from seismic data. A method based on azimuthally anisotropic elastic impedance (AEI) variation with azimuth is proposed to characterize the fracture distribution. Firstly, the azimuthal AEI equation in terms of truncate Fourier series is derived to reduce the number of unknown parameters in the fracture parameters estimation. In addition, Karhunen-Loeve transformation is used to extract the primary feature of reflection amplitude variation with azimuth. The fracture orientation without 90 degree ambiguity can be estimated by an innovative azimuthal AEI equation incorporating the azimuthal AEI equation in terms of Fourier series and the prior fracture orientation. And the biased estimate for the anisotropic gradient of the azimuthal AEI can be estimated from the second order Fourier coefficient to forecast the fracture density. The model case and a field data example demonstrate the rationality and robustness of the innovative primary wave azimuthal AEI equation and the fracture parameters estimation method even with sparse 30 degrees sampling interval in the azimuth.

Abstract

Summary Stochastic seismic inversion works as an important technology to estimate elastic parameters of subsurface media to guide the lithology prediction and fluid discrimination. In this study, an improved stochastic simulation is proposed to invert seismic impedance and lithofacies simultaneously. The Gaussian mixture priori probability density (PDF) is initially utilized to describe the distribution of model parameters influenced by subsurface lithofacies. Furthermore, a novel expression of multi-dimensional posteriori PDF conditioned with time and frequency joint-domain seismic data is derived. And, the differential evolution Markov Chain Monte Carlo (DE-MCMC) algorithm is utilized to implement the optimizations of multi-dimensional posterior PDF in our approach, which runs multiple Markov chains in parallel and estimates the multiple solutions of model parameters with the theory of population evolutionary. The lithofacies is clearly discriminated according to the weights of different Gaussian components in the posterior PDF and the model parameters are sampled from the selected Gaussian components to realize the simultaneous prediction of these two parameters. Finally, the feasibility and robustness of DE-MCMC model are illustrated by several synthetic examples and field datasets. The estimated P-wave impedance and lithofacies classification results of maximum conditional probability density (Cpd) coincide with the well logging curves and interpreted lithofacies.

Summary Anisotropic azimuthal amplitude variation with offset (AVO) inversion works as an important tool to estimate elastic parameters and anisotropic parameters of underground medium from pre-stack and azimuthal seismic data in the geosciences. Shale formation with parallel vertical or near-vertical fractures is often described with orthogonal anisotropic medium. However, the problems, which more model parameters, higher condition number of forward solver and relatively stronger dependence on the initial model for traditional orthotropic azimuthal AVO inversion, render the poor stability of the estimated parameters. In this paper, we carry on the study on the approaches with wide azimuthal pre-stack seismic data to establish the azimuthal amplitude difference AVO forward solver of orthotropic media, and implement the azimuthal amplitude difference AVO inversion for the orthotropic parameters under Bayesian framework with smooth background constraint to reduce the condition number of forward solver and improve the robustness and stability of inversion. Besides, Cauchy and Gaussian probability distributions are respectively utilized as priori information of the model parameters and the likelihood function for enhancing the inversion precision. Finally, field data examples are finally used to verify the feasibility and stability of the proposed approach in the estimation of the anisotropic parameters in orthotropic medium.

Seismic inversion with prestack seismic data such as amplitude variation with offsets (AVO) inversion is an important tool in the estimation of elastic parameters for predicting lithology and discriminating fluid in conventional or unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. The product of Young's modulus and density (Young's impedance, YI) and the product of Poisson ratio and density (Poisson ratio impedance, PI) show great potential in lithology prediction and fluid discrimination of unconventional resources such as shale gas or oil. The high quality requirements for prestack data in density inversion render the estimation of YI and PI arduous and inaccurate with a conventional prestack inversion approach. In this study, a direct AVO inversion approach is proposed to estimate YI, PI, and density directly from P-wave seismic data. The linearized P-wave reflectivity approximate equation in terms of YI, PI, and density is initially derived. Five models, including four typical AVO classes, are utilized to verify the accuracy of the derived linearized P-wave reflectivity equation in comparison with the exact P-wave reflectivity equation and the frequently used linearized reflectivity approximate equation involving P- and S-wave velocities and density. Parameter sensitivity analysis illustrates that YI and PI can reasonably be estimated from P-wave reflectivity if a decorrelation scheme is utilized in the inversion algorithm. In addition, a pragmatic AVO inversion using a Bayesian scheme is suggested for the direct inversion of YI and PI from prestack seismic data. Synthetic and field data examples demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed inversion approach in the estimation of YI and PI and show the potential of this approach in fluid discrimination.

The results were compared with the results of the existing literature, and the results were in good agreement with the existing results. In addition, the impact forces of U profile and the external drift profile were calculated, and the impact load of two kinds of profiles were analyzed through time evolution.

Abstract

Summary With the difficulty of oil and gas exploration increasing in conventional reservoirs, volcanic rocks have been attached more and more importance. Rock-physics model gives us insights into the macroscopic responses of micro-factors. The modelling of volcanic rocks relies on three major steps. First, a multi-mineral volumetric interpretation model is proposed including quartz, feldspar, ferromagnesian, shale and pores. The log response equations for density, interval transit time, gamma ray and compensated neutron porosity are developed, which are solved by the Complex method to calculate the mineral contents. Second, according to the characteristics of pores, gas cavity (spherical pores with aspect ratio˜ 1), dissolved pore (aspect ratio˜ 0.1) and crack (aspect ratio˜ 0.01) are taken into account simultaneously to calculate the modulus of framework of the rock. Finally, in view of the partial saturation of fluid in the porous media, patchy saturation model is introduced to calculate the elastic modulus of saturated rock. Based on the rock physics model, the shear wave velocity can be estimated effectively with the relative error less than 10% basically.

Abstract

The mechanical performance of pre-stressed steel wires at elevated temperatures is a key and fundamental topic for the study of pre-stressed steels in terms of fire resistance and evaluation of post-fire structural damages. In this article, tension tests of grade 1860 ФP5 high-strength steel wires at elevated temperatures and post-treatment tension tests of high-strength steel wires were reported. The results revealed that the stress–strain curves of the high-strength steel wire samples at elevated temperature were relatively smooth, while the mechanical performance degraded as the temperature increased. Meanwhile, the mechanical performance of post-treatment sample showed insignificant variation at temperatures lower than 300°C but significantly degradation at temperatures higher than 300°C. This study serves as an essential reference to future studies of pre-stressed steels.

Abstract

Summary Objective of the study Candida parapsilosis has emerged as an important cause of bloodstream infections (BSI) in the health care setting. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and drug resistance of C. parapsilosis BSI in West China Hospital of Sichuan University in China and provide the basis for prevention and treatment of this disease. Patients We retrospectively collected and analyzed patients presented in our hospital reported with C. parapsilosis BSI from January 2012 to January 2015. Materials and methods Data regarding age, gender, the department distribution, the potential clinical risk factors and the result of clinical treatment and prognosis were retrospectively evaluated. As to the antifungal drugs susceptibility testing, we used Etest method for determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of amphotericin B, fluconazole, voriconazole, caspofungin and flucytosine for all the clinical isolates of C. parapsilosis. Standard quality strains were used as the controls. Results Most of the patients with C. parapsilosis BSI were over 60-year-old (37.5%) or within 10 years old (28.13%). Among patients, 78.13% came from an intensive care unit or had undergone surgery in the past several months. The major risk factors associated with an increased risk of infection included the use of broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs and deep vein indwelling. The overall mortality of patients with C. parapsilosis BSI was 31.25%. The drug sensitivity tests revealed that all isolates were sensitive to amphotericin B and flucytosine. Two and 1 isolates were found susceptible to fluconazole and voriconazole in a dose-dependent manner, respectively. Only 1 isolate was resistant to fluconazole. 4 isolates (12.5%) were medium sensitive to caspofungin, but no one showed drug resistance. Conclusion In summary, elders and newborns were more vulnerable to C. parapsilosis infections. C. parapsilosis was found frequently as pathogens leading to BSI in patients admitted to ICU and departments of surgery and often causing a high mortality rate. C. parapsilosis rarely showed drug resistance at present, so common antifungal drugs could be used for treatment. Recommendations for using of antifungal drugs focused on paying close attention to possible drug resistance trend.

Abstract

We present a combined fit of a simple astrophysical model of UHECR sources to both the energy spectrum and mass composition data measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. The fit has been performed for energies above 5 EeV, i.e. the region of the all-particle spectrum above the so-called "ankle"' feature. The astrophysical model we adopted consists of identical sources uniformly distributed in a comoving volume, where nuclei are accelerated with a rigidity-dependent mechanism. The fit results suggest sources characterized by relatively low maximum injection energies and hard spectral indices. Abstract

Atmospheric conditions, such as the pressure (P), temperature (T) or air density ( / P=T), affect the development of extended air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. We study the impact of the atmospheric variations on the reconstruction of air showers with data from the arrays of surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory, considering separately the one with detector spacings of 1500m and the one with 750m spacing. We observe modulations in the event rates that are due to the influence of the air density and pressure variations on the measured signals, from which the energy estimators are obtained. Abstract

Systematical experiments have been carried out to investigate the mechanism of cracking and disintegration in the Mn–Al–Fe–Si master alloys. It revealed that pulverization of this alloy is due to the internal stress caused by volume change and hydrolysis. The earlier volume change associated with both the phase transition of Mn-content phase and the solidification process of ζ-FeSi2 led to micro cracks. Through the micro cracks channel, the further volume change took place due to the Al2O3 expansion which was produced by the hydrolysis of aluminum phosphide and carbide when they contacted air. The two steps interacted with each other and led to complete disintegration of the alloys together. However it has been found that Ti can prevent the alloy hydrolysis due to the formation of stable titanium phosphide and carbide instead of the unstable aluminum phosphide and carbide, but it can not stop the earlier volume expansion.

44. Interactive effects of elevated CO2 and drought on photosynthetic capacity and PSII performance in maize

Abstract

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration [CO2] and the change of water distribution in arid and semiarid areas affect plant physiology and ecosystem processes. The interaction of elevated [CO2] and drought results in the complex response such as changes in the energy flux of photosynthesis. The performance of photosystem (PS) II and the electron transport were evaluated by using OJIP induction curves of chlorophyll a fluorescence and the P N-C i curves in the two-factor controlled experiment with [CO2] of 380 (AC) or 750 (EC) [μmol mol−1] and water stress by 10% polyethylene glycol 6000. Compared to water-stressed maize (Zea mays L.) under AC, the EC treatment combined with water stress decreased the number of active reaction centers but it increased the antenna size and the energy flux (absorbed photon flux, trapping flux, and electron transport flux) of each reaction center in PSII. Thus, the electron transport rate was enhanced, despite the indistinctively changed quantum yield of the electron transport and energy dissipation. The combination of EC and the water-stress treatment resulted in the robust carboxylation rate without elevating the saturated photosynthetic rate (P max). This study demonstrated that maize was capable of transporting more electrons into the carboxylation reaction, but this could not be used to increase P max under EC.

45. Numerical analysis of gas bubbles in close proximity to a movable or deformable body

Abstract

The growth and collapse of gaseous bubbles near a movable or deformable body are investigated numerically using the boundary element method and fluid–solid coupling technique. The fluid is treated as inviscid, incompressible and the flow irrotational. The unsteady Bernoulli equation is applied on the bubble surface as one of the boundary conditions of the Laplace’s equation for the potential. Good agreements between the numerical and experimental results demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the present method. The translation and rotation of the rigid body due to the bubble evolution are captured by solving the six-degrees-of-freedom equations of motion for the rigid body. The fluid–solid coupling is achieved by matching the normal component of the velocity and the pressure at the fluid–solid interface. Compared to a fixed rigid body, the expansion of the bubble is not affected too much but much faster collapsing velocities during the collapsing phase of bubble can be observed when considering the motion of the rigid body. The rigid body is pushed away as the bubble grows and moved toward the bubble as the bubble collapses. The motion of two bubbles near a movable cylinder is also simulated. The large rotation of the cylinder and obvious deformation and distortion for the bubble in close proximity to a curved wall are observed in our codes. Finally, the growth and collapse of bubble near a deformable ellipsoid shell are also simulated using the combination of boundary element method (BEM) and finite element method (FEM) techniques. The oscillations of the ellipsoid shell can be observed during the growth and collapse of bubble, which much differs from the results obtained by only considering effects of a rigidly movable body on the bubble evolution.

46. Computational investigation of the mitigation of an underwater explosion

Abstract

The protection effects of a mitigation layer in an underwater explosion are investigated here. The explosion shock loads on a mitigated structure are computed by a Mie–Gruneisen mixture model. Validation tests show that the model is efficient for the underwater explosion problem. Then underwater explosion problems with different mitigation layers are simulated here. In these simulations, special attention is paid on the second shock wave, which is induced by the reflection of the main shock wave. From the results, it is found that the shock impedance of the mitigation layer plays an important role. It determines not only the property of second shock loads, but also the occurrence of protection effects of the mitigation layer. After that the protection effects of layer thickness and explosive–structure distance are studied here. It is found that these factors influence the main shock slightly, but have significant influence on the second shock. In addition, the compressible structure can also be protected by the mitigation layer.

Abstract

The classical Weissinger’s L-method is generalized to the lifting problem for steadily advancing curved wings subject to the wing-in-ground (WIG) effect above a large body of water in subsonic flow, and the free surface defines the boundary between the air and water. Unlike the traditional analysis of the lifting problem, the essential techniques focus on finding the three-dimensional free surface Green’s function generated by the isolated horseshoe vortex in the upper layer of the stratified fluid where the air is regarded as weakly compressible and the water is incompressible. The numerical calculation is implemented using Weissinger’s L-method. Finally, the effects of the curved geometry on WIG effect in the vicinity of a free surface in subsonic flow are discussed. Extensive numerical examples are carried out to show the lift properties for three-dimensional swept and dihedral wings operating in the vicinity of a free surface as a function of the sweep or dihedral angle for different clearance-to-chord ratios and Mach numbers. Interestingly, for high Froude numbers, the free surface effectively becomes rigid, and it can safely be treated as a solid surface.

Abstract

In this paper empirical formulas relating the speed to principal dimensions of aircraft carriers have been obtained through regression analysis of the data of 105 aircraft carriers. To reduce uncertainty as much as possible, aircraft carriers are classified into several different categories. In each category, regression analysis is separately performed such that a variety of regression (empirical) formulas have thus been obtained for possible use at the initial design stage of a carrier. The goodness of fit of these formulas is finally analyzed through variance analysis.

Abstract

We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg⁡(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavored as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published
