1. An examination of land use impacts of flooding induced by sea level rise

Abstract

Coastal regions become unprecedentedly vulnerable to coastal hazards that are associated with sea level rise. The purpose of this paper is therefore to simulate prospective urban exposure to changing sea levels. This article first applied the cellular-automaton-based SLEUTH model (Project Gigalopolis, 2016) to calibrate historical urban dynamics in Bay County, Florida (USA) – a region that is greatly threatened by rising sea levels. This paper estimated five urban growth parameters by multiple-calibration procedures that used different Monte Carlo iterations to account for modeling uncertainties. It then employed the calibrated model to predict three scenarios of urban growth up to 2080 – historical trend, urban sprawl, and compact development. We also assessed land use impacts of four policies: no regulations; flood mitigation plans based on the whole study region and on those areas that are prone to experience growth; and the protection of conservational lands. This study lastly overlaid projected urban areas in 2030 and 2080 with 500-year flooding maps that were developed under 0, 0.2, and 0.9 m sea level rise. The calibration results that a substantial number of built-up regions extend from established coastal settlements. The predictions suggest that total flooded area of new urbanized regions in 2080 would be more than 25 times that under the flood mitigation policy, if the urbanization progresses with few policy interventions. The joint model generates new knowledge in the domain between land use modeling and sea level rise. It contributes to coastal spatial planning by helping develop hazard mitigation schemes and can be employed in other international communities that face combined pressure of urban growth and climate change.

Abstract

Many geographical databases have been developed for different programs and applications, but data acquisition and data sharing are still a big problem because no interoperability exists among these different databases. This study presents a GML (Geography Markup Language) approach to build a geographical database in order to enable interoperability. As an open, non-proprietary industry standard, GML overcomes the problems of current GIS software proprietary data models and database structures. Compared with other standards, such as the Geographic Data File (GDF) and Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS), the GML approach has the advantage of enabling on-line data exchange. GML holds promise in providing a standard way to share and use existing spatial data over the World Wide Web. A GML-based interoperable geographical database for the conservation of the Stone Forest Landscape is implemented as a case study. Abstract

In view of the poor moisture-heat resistance property of traditional PET film (type 6021), PET molecular was modified by amine compounds for effectively improving the moisture-heat resistance property of PET film. By researching the compatibility of the appropriate antioxidant additives and amine compounds, ageing property of PET film was increased suitably. The optimum formula was designed by comparing with aging property decay of the 6021 film and moisture-heat resistance film (type A, B and C). At the same time, the mechanism of moisture-heat resistance and anti-oxidation also is researched. The modified PET film could be used in crystalline silicon solar cell industry for its high level of moisture-heat resistance as well as good mechanic property and electrical property.

Abstract

The popularity of Internet technology has brought about some fundamental changes in the field of GIS. Internet GIS is emerging as a new technology to access, process, and disseminate spatial information over the Internet. Internet GIS cover a much wider audience than the traditional GIS. This raises many issues that are distinct from traditional desktop GIS, such as easy access, web-compatible user interface, and file transfer security. I will first discuss the definition and features of Internet GIS. Two major approaches used in the Internet GIS development -- server-side processing and client-side processing -- are then described. These approaches are compared according to their performance, user interactivity, and other criteria. The server-side approach is appropriate to provide users easy access and inquiry of large databases, whereas the client-side Internet GIS offer better user interactions. The technology of Internet GIS is evolving rapidly. It is therefore important for the GIS community to monitor and define the course of its development.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is currently under construction at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l.).The detector consists of a central carpet, 74 × 78 m2, made of a single layer of Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs), and surrounded by a partially instrumented guard ring for a total instrumented area of about 6700 m2. The digital read-out, performed by means of pick-up electrodes 6.7 × 62 cm2 (strip), allows to measure the charged particle number of small size air showers. The technique of counting the number of fired strips on the ARGO carpet corresponds to operate in the 10÷500 TeV energy region where both direct and indirect measurements on the primary cosmic radiation have been performed. Many composition models have been proposed by different experiments. In this work we discuss the ability of the ARGO detector to discriminate among some models.

Abstract

SUMMARY This article investigates the effects of a mushy inner core boundary on the eigenperiods of the Slichter modes for a simple, but realistic, earth model (rotating, spherical configuration, elastic inner core and mantle, neutrally stratified, inviscid, compressible liquid core). It is found that the influence of the mushy boundary layer is substantial compared with some other effects, such as those from elasticity of the mantle, non-neutral stratification of the liquid outer core and ellipticity of the Earth and centrifugal potential. The results obtained here may set a lower bound on the eigenperiods of the Slichter modes for a realistic earth model. For example, for a PREM model, the lower bound of the central period of the Slichter modes should be about 5.3 hr.

Abstract

The recent claim by Smylie [1992] to have detected the Slichter modes of the Earth's inner core rests on what appears to be a remarkable agreement between theory and observation. However the theoretical eigenperiods which are used by Smylie conflict significantly with all previously published periods for the Slichter modes, both for non-rotating and rotating Earth models. A closer examination of the theory used in these calculations reveals the use of static Love numbers to represent the response of the inner core and mantle to dynamics in the liquid core. We here show that the use of dynamic Love numbers restores the eigenperiods to those obtained using standard seismological theory and consequently destroys agreement between these periods and the claimed observations.

9. [Replantation of segmental destructive amputation of multiple fingers]

Abstract

To discuss the indication of replantation of destructive amputation of multiple fingers for improvement of the function of injured fingers.From February 1996 to August 1999, 23 amputated fingers in 8 cases were shortened and replanted. The crushed digital bones were fixed by Kirschner wires, flexor tendons repaired by Kessler suture technique, and digital extensor tendons repaired by mattress suture. The arteries and veins were anastomosed in each finger at the ratio of 1 to 2 or 2 to 3. The defect of blood vessels was repaired by free graft of autologous veins in 5 fingers. All of the cases were followed up for 10 to 18 months, and clinical evaluation was performed.All replanted fingers survived in the 8 cases, with good sensation, two point discrimination of 6 to 12 mm, and satisfied function, such as pinching, grasping and hooking. The fingers were shortened for 2.6 cm in average, ranging from 2.2 cm to 4.0 cm.Multiple digits replantation by shortening fingers is beneficial to functional restoration of segmental destructive fingers.

10. [Reconstruction of nail folds by double pulp flap in congenital complete syndactyly release]

Abstract

To introduce a surgical approach for reconstruction of nail folds in congenital complete syndactyly release.A narrow flap and a broad flap were raised on the common distal phalanx to cover the denuded nail-edge in 30 fingers of 15 cases whose webs were separated.All of the flaps were successfully transferred and survived. The reconstructed nail folds had satisfied figure in 21 out of 30 fingers. The nail folds in the other 9 fingers, covered by a broad flap in 2 fingers and by a narrow flap in 7 fingers, were a little smaller than normal. All of the 30 fingers had normal fullness of pulp and no twisty nails.The reconstruction of nail folds by double pulp flap can be performed with a one-stage technique, and the outcome is satisfactory, which make it as a good surgical approach to reconstruct nail folds in congenital complete syndactyly release.

Abstract

The Tibet air-shower array operating at Yangbajing (4300 m above sea level) is sensitive to gamma-ray air showers at energies as low as 3 TeV. The observation of the moon’s shadow has provided a direct check of the angular resolution, the energy estimation and the systematic pointing error of this air-shower array. Using these data, we have searched for multi-TeV gamma-ray emission from 21 SNRs located within 5 kpc distance in the declination band of 0° to +60°. The signal from the Crab Nebula was detected at 5.5 σ level as described another paper. No significant DC excess exceeding 5 σ level was found from any of these SNRs except from the Crab Nebula. The results of nearby eight SNRs piled up gave a flux upper limit slightly lower than the expected values for a simple model of shock acceleration.

Abstract

We searched for multi-TeV counterparts to the gamma–ray bursts (GRBs) at keV energies detected by BATSE during the period from October 2, 1995 to March 18, 1999 using the data of the Tibet Air Shower Array. In the field of view of the array there were 70 GRBs detected by BATSE in this period. The search was done based on the sky survey within error circles of BATSE bursts and with time scales during 10 to several hundred seconds. No significant signals of counterparts were detected.

Abstract

Tibet II Air Shower Array consisting of scintillation counters with lattice of 15 m spacing has been operated with very high trigger rate of about 200 Hz. The threshold enegy of this array is estimated to be about 8 TeV for proton induced showers. Tibet High Density (HD) Array with 7.5 m spacing has been operated with the trigger rate of 115 Hz. The Mode energy of this array is estimated to be about 3 TeV for proton showers. Angular resolution of the arrays are estimated to be 0.9 degree above 10 TeV for Tibet II array, and 0.85 degree above TeV for HD array, resepectively. The angular resolution of these arrays and other array performances are examined by observing the Moon shadow resulting from the cosmic ray deficit in the direction of the Moon. Using the deflection of the Moon shadow to the east-west direction, the error of the array can be estimated by observing the displacement of the shadow in the north-south direction, because it is free from the effect of geomagnetic field, especially at Yangbajing in Tibet. The calibrations such as primary energy, angular resolution and pointing errors, directly using the Moon shadow has first been done by the Tibet experiment.

Abstract

Since 1996, a hybrid experiment consisting of the emulsion chamber and burst detector array and the Tibet-II air-shower array has been operated at Yangbajing (4300 m above sea level, 606 g/cm^2) in Tibet. This experiment can detect air-shower cores, called as burst events, accompanied by air showers in excess of about 100 TeV. We observed about 4300 burst events accompanied by air showers during 690 days of operation and selected 820 proton-induced events with its primary energy above 200 TeV using a neural network method. Using this data set, we obtained the energy spectrum of primary protons in the energy range from 200 to 1000 TeV. The differential energy spectrum obtained in this energy region can be fitted by a power law with the index of -2.97 $\pm$ 0.06, which is steeper than that obtained by direct measurements at lower energies. We also obtained the energy spectrum of helium nuclei at particle energies around 1000 TeV., 25 pages, 22 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. D

Abstract

We have shown that the Sun's shadow by high energy cosmic rays moves year by year and its behavior is correlated with a time variation of the large-scale structure of the solar and interplanetary magnetic fields. The solar activity was near minimum in the period from 1996 through 1997. Using the data obtained with the Tibet air shower array, we examined the shadowing of cosmic rays by the Sun in this quiet phase of solar cycle, and found that the Sun's shadow was just in the apparent direction of the Sun, though it was observed at the position considerably away from the Sun to the south-west in the period between 1990 and 1993. It is known that the magnetic pole of equivalent solar dipole was reversed during the previous active phase, and near solar minimum the dipole was aligned with the rotating axis, preserving its N-pole on the north pole side of the Sun. This causes the solar magnetic field to shift the Sun's shadow to the east. Thus, the observed results suggest that the shift of the Sun's shadow due to the solar magnetic field was pushed back by the effect of the geomagnetic field, since the geomagnetic field always make the shadow shift to the west. Abstract

The enzyme tyrosinase, encoded by tyrosinase gene (mel), is responsible for melanin formation. In a shotgun cloning experiment, a SalI-digested DNA fragment coding for tyrosinase was cloned from Pseudomonas maltophilia DNA into plasmid vector (pUC18) to generate the hybrid plasmid (pWSY). The recombinant plasmid imparted the ability of melanin synthesis to an E. coli host (HB101). The foreign DNA fragment (0.7 kb) possessed no recognition sites for BamHI, HindIII, EcoRI or BclI. Hybridization studies confirmed that the small fragment cloned in pWSY was from P. maltophilia DNA. Nucleotide sequence analysis identified an ORF of 504 nt coding tyrosinase. SDS-PAGE analysis also revealed an additional protein of 18 kDa, which was equal to the putative tyrosinase according to the size of mel fragment, was expressed in the E. coli recombinant carrying the plasmid pWSY.

Bakelite RPCs, assembled according to the ARGO design, have been operated in the high altitude Laboratory of YBJ using dedicated electronics to pick-up the streamer signal. Here we report on the results concerning absorbed current, single counting rate, efficiency and time resolution. Abstract

A resistive plate counters (RPCs) carpet of similar to50 m(2) has been put in operation in the Yangbajing Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China) at 4300 in a.s.l., in order to study the RPCs performance at high altitude and the detector capability of imaging the EAS disc. This test has been performed in view of an enlarged use of RPCs for the ARGO-YBJ experiment. This experiment will be devoted to a wide range of fundamental issues in cosmic rays and astroparticle physics, including in particular gamma-ray astronomy and gamma-ray bursts physics at energies greater than or equal to 100 GeV. In this paper we present and discuss the procedures adopted to calibrate the detector and reconstruct the shower direction. Results concerning many shower features as the angular distribution, the density spectrum, the time profile of the shower front, are found well consistent with the expectation. Abstract

The characteristics of a 50m(2) RPC carpet(prototype of YBJ-ARGO experiment)was analyzed using its test run data. A correction method of the systematic time error is suggested, and nonuniform azimuthal angle distribution possibly due to direction reconstruction error on an asymmetric carpet is reported.

Abstract

An RPC carpet covering similar to 10(4) m(2) (ARGO-YBJ experiment) will be installed in the YangBaJing Laboratory (Tibet, People's Republic of China) at an altitude of 4300 m a.s.l. A test-module of similar to 50 m(2) has been put in operation in this laboratory and about 10(6) air shower events have been collected. The RPC performance at high altitude and the carpet capability of reconstructing the shower features are presented. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

ARGO-YBJ (Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing) is a detector optimized to study small size air showers. It consists of a layer of Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs) covering an area of similar to 6500 m(2) and will be located in the Yangbajing Laboratory (Tibet, China) at 4300 m a.s.l. ARGO-YBJ will be devoted to a wide range of fundamental issues in cosmic rays and astroparticle physics, including in particular gamma-ray astronomy and gamma-ray bursts physics in the range 10 GeV divided by 500 TeV. The sensitivity of ARGO-YBJ to detect high energy GRBs is presented.

Abstract

We present the ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage detector placed at high altitude (similar to 4300 m a.s.l.) that exploits the RPC technique. Results of a test experiment performed at Yanbajing site, with a full coverage RPC carpet of 50 m(2) are also presented.

Abstract

An RPC carpet covering similar to 10(4) m(2) (ARGO-YBJ experiment) will be installed in the YangBaJing Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China) at an altitude of 4300 m a.s.l.. A test-module of similar to 50 m(2) has been put in operation in this laboratory and about 10(6) air shower events have been collected. The carpet capability of reconstructing the shower features is presented.

Abstract

The ARCO-YBJ experiment, (Astrophysical Radiation Ground-based Observatory at YaugBaJing) is under construction in Tibet, 90 kill to the north of Lhasa. The full coverage approach and the high altitude location allow the study of many physics items in the field of low energy cosmic rays, namely gamma-ray astronomy, diffuse gamma-rays, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), proton/antiproton ratio, primary proton spectrum and heliosphere physics, In this paper the expected sensitivities of ARGO-YBJ for gamma astronomy and GRB physics are presented and compared with the present experimental techniques and results. The performance of a test-module of similar to 50 m(2) operated on-site is, also discussed.
