1. Ryugu’s Anhydrous Ingredients and Their Spectral Link to Primitive Dust from the Outer Solar System

Abstract

Ryugu is a second-generation C-type asteroid formed by the reassembly of fragments of a previous larger body in the main asteroid belt. While the majority of Ryugu samples returned by Hayabusa2 are composed of a lithology dominated by aqueously altered minerals, clasts of pristine olivine and pyroxene remain in the least-altered lithologies. These clasts are objects of great interest for revealing the composition of the dust from which the original building blocks of Ryugu's parent asteroid formed. Here we show that some grains rich in olivine, pyroxene, and amorphous silicates discovered in one millimeter-sized stone of Ryugu have infrared spectra similar to the D-type asteroid Hektor (a Jupiter Trojan), to comet Hale–Bopp, and to some anhydrous interplanetary dust particles of probable cometary origin. This result indicates that Ryugu's primary parent body incorporated anhydrous ingredients similar to the building blocks of asteroids (and possibly some comets) formed in the outer solar system, and that Ryugu retained valuable information on the formation and evolution of planetesimals at different epochs of our solar system's history.

2. Performance comparison of aperture-less and confocal infrared microscopes

Abstract

We compared hyperspectral infrared raster maps and images for contrast, definition and resolution of the same samples recorded with a confocal microscope coupled with a synchrotron radiation source vs a Focal Plane Array (FPA) detector equipped microscope. Biological samples (hair and skin sections) and astrophysics samples (meteoritic grains) were used. The samples presented are a few microns in size, such as embedded particles, a single unique cell or thin layer. Our results show that the actual spatial resolution and contrast of FPA images were lower than spectral maps from the confocal microscope. The FPA microscope also produced measurements that lacked accuracy: size of sample features and peak intensity were inaccurately estimated. More surprisingly, the intensity of absorption peaks in the FPA images was lower than the intensity measured from the same sample with a confocal microscope. Our measurements underlined the complementarity of FPA and confocal microscopes. FPA can be used to quickly measure the overall composition of a sample and detect the distribution of its components, but may fail measuring the exact chemical composition of the small features and may not detect weak spectral differences between adjacent positions. The averaging effect of aperture-less systems not only affects image resolution but also lowers their spectral accuracy. Confocal microscopes are inherently slower but give a more accurate measurement of the local composition at the diffraction limit.

Abstract

Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide–bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu’s parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. 4. Isotopically Heavy Micrometeorites—Fragments of CY Chondrite or a New Hydrous Parent Body?

Abstract

Cosmic dust grains sample a diverse range of solar system small bodies. This includes asteroids that are not otherwise represented in our meteorite collections. In this work we obtained 3D images of micrometeorite interiors using tomography before collecting destructive high‐precision oxygen isotope measurements. These data allow us to link textures in unmelted micrometeorites to known chondrite groups. In addition to identifying particles from ordinary chondrites, CR and CM chondrites we report two micrometeorites derived from an anomalous 16O‐poor source (δ17O: +16.4‰, δ18O: +28.4‰, and Δ17O: +1.4‰). Their compositions overlap with a previously reported micrometeorite (TAM50‐25) from Suttle et al. (2020), https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2020.116444 (EPSL: 546:116444). These particles represent hydrated carbonaceous chondrite material derived either from a new group or from the CY chondrites (thereby extending the isotopic range of this group). In either scenario they demonstrate close petrographic and isotopic connections to the CO‐CM chondrite clan. Furthermore, their position in O‐isotope space makes them the most likely candidate for the parent body of the anomalous “group 4” cosmic spherules previously reported by Suavet et al. (2010), https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2010.02.046 (EPSL: 293:313‐320) and several subsequent isotopic studies. We conclude that the “group 4” cosmic spherules originate from hydrated C‐type asteroid parents.

Abstract

International audience; In the near future, a new generation of sample return missions (Hayabusa2, OSIRIS-REx, MMX, etc.) will collect samples from small solar system bodies. To maximize the scientific outcome of laboratory studies and minimize the loss of precious extraterrestrial samples, an analytical sequence from less destructive to more destructive techniques needs to be established. In this work, we present a combined X-ray and IR microtomography applied to five Itokawa particles and one fragment of the primitive carbonaceous chondrite Paris. We show that this analytical approach is able to provide a 3-D physical and chemical characterization of individual extraterrestrial particles, using the measurement of their 3-D structure and porosity, and the detection of mineral and organic phases, and their spatial co-localization in 3-D. We propose these techniques as an efficient first step in a multitechnique analytical sequence on microscopic samples collected by space missions.

Abstract

International audience; Many asteroids in the main belt have spectra like those of Mighei-type CM chondrites, but some Near Earth Objects (NEO) resemble less well known types of C2 chondrite. Northwest Africa (NWA) 12563, a new find with affinities to C2 chondrites, could help us understand the differences between observations of CM2 chondrites and bodies that are currently being studied by the Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx space missions. NWA 12563 contains 14% chondrules supported by 86% fine grained matrix consistent with CM2 chondrites, but differs from them in other respects. In both matrix and chondrules, olivine is unaltered and pyroxene shows incipient alteration. Metal in chondrules is pseudomorphed by serpentine, and mesostasis is replaced by serpentine-saponite and chlorite. Many Type I chondrules have highly irregular shapes resulting from fracturing and selective metal replacement. Type II porphyritic chondrules are clusters of phenocrysts set in matrix-like material. Type II chondrules may be kinked and partially disbarred. The matrix of NWA 12563 differs from CM2 chondrites in the absence of tochilinite-cronstedtite intergrowths. It contains hydrated and oxidized amorphous silicate (Fe3+/∑Fe ~75%) richer in magnesium than in other chondrites (with embedded sulfides). Serpentine-saponite is also present, as well as abundant framboidal magnetite.NWA 12563 has similarities to a number of ungrouped magnetite-rich and 18O-rich chondrites (Bells, Essebi, Niger I, WIS 91600, Tagish Lake, and MET 00432) that we call C2-ung1, as opposed to C2-ung2 chondrites (poorer in 18O and magnetite). The oxygen isotopic composition coupled with a magnetic susceptibility of log χ = 4.67 places NWA 12563 with these ungrouped chondrites in a cluster distinct from CM2 chondrites. NWA 12563 is closest to WIS 91600 among the C2-ung1 chondrites in alteration style and light element compositions. WIS 91600, however, has suffered light thermal metamorphism, suggesting that NWA 12563 might represent its altered but unheated precursor material within the same parent body if it were zoned. The average Vis-NIR spectrum of NWA 12563 matches the asteroid taxonomic class K and resembles that of CO3 Frontier Mountain (FRO) 95002, but its spectra range from very “red” in dark matrix areas and very “blue” in magnetite-rich areas. The average MIR spectrum shows features indicating phyllosilicates, aliphatic CH compounds, hydrated silicates, and olivine. It is significantly different from those of other chondrites including FRO 95002, and closest to Bells (from which it differs in carbon isotopic composition) and WIS91600. The variety of mineralogical, chemical and isotopic properties among C2-ung1 chondrites requires several different parent bodies. However, the high abundance of magnetite common to this cluster of ungrouped chondrites, and to a lesser extent CI chondrites, indicates that they should be considered as possible material from Bennu, which has an 18 µm magnetite signal in its spectrum not seen in the CM2 chondrites (Hamilton et al., 2019).

Abstract

International audience; With the recent and ongoing sample return missions and/or the developments of nano-to microscale 3-D and 2-D analytical techniques, it is necessary to develop sample preparation and analysis protocols that allow combination of different nanometer-to micrometer-scale resolution techniques and both maximize scientific outcome and minimize sample loss and contamination. Here, we present novel sample preparation and analytical procedures to extract a maximum of submicrometer structural, mineralogical, chemical, molecular, and isotopic information from micrometric heterogeneous samples. The sample protocol goes from a nondestructive infrared (IR) tomography of~10 to~70 µm-sized single grains, which provides the distribution and qualitative abundances of both mineral and organic phases, followed by its cutting in several slices at selected sites of interest for 2-D mineralogical analysis (e.g., transmission electron microscopy), molecular organic and mineral analysis (e.g., Raman and/or IR microspectroscopy), and isotopic/chemical analysis (e.g., NanoSIMS). We also discuss here the importance of the focused ion beam microscopy in the protocol, the problems of sample loss and contamination, and at last the possibility of combining successive different analyses in various orders on the same micrometric sample. Special care was notably taken to establish a protocol allowing correlated NanoSIMS/TEM/IR analyses with NanoSIMS performed first. Finally, we emphasize the interest of 3-D and 2-D IR analyses in studying the organics-minerals relationship in combination with more classical isotopic and mineralogical grain characterizations.

9. Hyperspectral imaging of carbonaceous chondrites in view of the Hayabusa2 sample return

Abstract

1. Introduction The Hayabusa2/JAXA spacecraft has orbited and studied near-Earth object Ryugu [1]. Two sample collections have been performed and the spacecraft is currently on its way back to the Earth for an expected return in late 2020. A preliminary examination phase will follow [2], expected to elucidate the formation and evolution of Ryugu. Considering the limited amount of material that will be retrieved, a multi-analytical sequence is needed to maximize the scientific outcome and minimize sample loss. Among the possible laboratory techniques, IR spectroscopy is important in being totally non-destructive and comparable to remote sensing observations of small bodies [3]. Thanks to IR imaging micro-spectroscopy, it is possible to detect and study the spatial distribution of molecular bonds associated to minerals, water and organic compounds, and their co-localization [4]. We consider IR three dimensional (3D) micro-tomography (IR-CT) an excellent starting point in a multi-analytical sequence to be applied on returned samples [5]. Here we report IR hyperspectral measurements of carbonaceous chondrites as a rehearsal of IR-CT and IR hyperspectral imaging that will be part of the multi-analytical sequence of the “MIN-PET CG” Hayabusa2 team (mineralogy and petrology of coarse grains) led by T. Nakamura. 2. Methods We performed IR measurements in reflectance on bulk fragments of selected meteorites, and both in reflectance and transmittance on several isolated grains (sizing 20-50 µm) extracted from carbonaceous chondrites. We also analyzed individual grains of the Murchison CM meteorite prepared at Tohoku University (Japan) from three bulk samples: (1) unheated, (2) heated at 400°C, and (3) heated at 600°C [6]. The laboratory-controlled heating was applied to simulate potential heating undergone by Ryugu surface materials, as suggested by some Hayabusa2 observations [7]. Some of these Murchison grains were mounted on tungsten needles by means of a platinum welding performed in IEMN-Lille (France) with a focused ion beam microscope. Other grains were prepared at Tohoku University, mounted on carbon fibers using epoxy (Fig. 1). We analyzed the samples using an IR hyperspectral imaging and micro-tomography setup installed at the SMIS beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron (France). This setup has already been used for analyzing Hayabusa samples from asteroid Itokawa [8]. FTIR data were collected using an Agilent Cary 670/620 microspectrometer. In transmission mode we used a X25 objective coupled with high magnification optics (providing an additional X2.5 magnification) placed in front of a 128x128 pixels FPA detector, to obtain a projected pixel size of ~0.66 µm on the focal plane, and a field of view of ~84 µm. IR-CT is performed in transmission mode using the method described by Dionnet et al. [8]. In reflection mode we used a X15 objective, with a projected pixel size of ~5.5 µm on the focal plane, and a field of view of ~700 µm (Fig. 1). In both cases we collected hyperspectral data: for each pixel we obtained an IR spectrum in the 850-3950 cm-1 spectral range. The spatial resolution was diffractionlimited for the whole investigated spectral range. 3. Results Infrared spectra show the presence of bending and stretching absorption bands of chemical bonds (C-H, OH, Si-O, C=O, etc.) of different functional groups, as expected from literature IR spectra of Murchison and other chondrites [9,10]. The relative intensities of these bands are found to vary among different grains, and their 3D spatial distribution is heterogeneous within individual grains (see Fig. 1). Noticeable differences are found between the IR spectra of unheated and heated Murchison samples, with a general trend of increasing the anhydrous to hydrated silicate content with increasing temperature, and reducing the organic content. Summary and Conclusions IR data provide a first quick look at the composition, abundance and 3D distribution of mineral phases and carbonaceous materials at the scale of a few micrometers. Once regions of interest are identified by IR measurements, thin sliced sections of the samples can be analyzed by more destructive techniques to retrieve the structure and the elemental and isotopic composition of the carbonaceous component and its mineral host, down to the nanometer scale [11]. In addition, the IR data are useful in the comparison with remote sensing observations of asteroid surfaces [7,12]. This top-down sequence will help us building a bridge between the remote sensing and in situ observations of Ryugu at macroscopic scale and the chemical and physical processes operating at the nanoscale. Abstract

We characterized the 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko’s dust activity, by analysing individual dust particle velocity and momentum measurements of Grain Impact Analyser and Dust Accumulator (GIADA), the dust detector onboard the ESA/Rosetta spacecraft, collecting dust from tens to hundreds of kilometres from the nucleus. Specifically, we developed a procedure to trace back the motion of dust particles down to the nucleus, identifying the surface’s region ejecting each dust particle. This procedure has been developed and validated for the first part of the mission by Longobardo et al. and was extended to the entire GIADA data set in this work. The results based on this technique allowed us to investigate the link between the dust porosity (fluffy/compact) and the morphology of the ejecting surface (rough/smooth). We found that fluffy and compact particles, despite the lack of correlation in their coma spatial distribution (at large nucleocentric distances) induced by their different velocities, have common ejection regions. In particular, the correlation between the distributions of fluffy and compact particles is maintained up to an altitude of about 10 km. Fluffy particles are more abundant in rough terrains. This could be the result of past cometary activity that resurfaced the smooth terrains and/or of the comet formation process that stored the fluffy particles inside the voids between the pebbles. The variation of fluffy particle concentration between rough and smooth terrains agrees with predictions of comet formation models. Finally, no correlation between dust distribution on the nucleus and surface thermal properties was found.

Abstract

This study is a multi-technique investigation of the Paris carbonaceous chondrite directly applied on two selected 500 &times, 500 &micro, m&sup2, areas of a millimetric fragment, without any chemical extraction. By mapping the partial hydration of the amorphous silicate phase dominating the meteorite sample matrix, infrared spectroscopy gave an interesting glimpse into the way the fluid may have circulated into the sample and partially altered it. The TOF-SIMS in-situ analysis allowed the studying and mapping of the wide diversity of chemical moieties composing the meteorite organic content. The results of the combined techniques show that at the micron scale, the organic matter was always spatially associated with the fine-grained and partially-hydrated amorphous silicates and to the presence of iron in different chemical states. These systematic associations, illustrated in previous studies of other carbonaceous chondrites, were further supported by the identification by TOF-SIMS of cyanide and/or cyanate salts that could be direct remnants of precursor ices that accreted with dust during the parent body formation, and by the detection of different metal-containing large organic ions. Finally, the results obtained emphasized the importance of studying the specific interactions taking place between organic and mineral phases in the chondrite matrix, in order to investigate their role in the evolution story of primitive organic matter in meteorite parent bodies.

Abstract

Context. From August 2014 to September 2016, Rosetta escorted comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) during its journey around the Sun. One of the aims of Rosetta was to characterize cometary activity and the consequent formation of dust flux structures in cometary comae. Aims. We characterize and quantify the submicrometer- to micrometer-sized dust flux that may be shaped in privileged directions within the coma of 67P inbound to and outbound from perihelion. Methods. The in situ dust-measuring instrument GIADA, part of the Rosetta/ESA payload, consisted of three subsystems, one of which was the Micro Balance Subsystem (MBS), composed of five quartz crystal microbalances. From May 2014 to September 2016, MBS measured the submicrometer- to micrometer-sized deposited dust mass every 5 min. Results. We characterized the submicrometer- to micrometer-sized dust mass flux in the coma of 67P. The anti-sunward and the radial direction are preferred, and the flux is higher in the anti-sunward direction. The measured cumulative dust mass in the anti-sunward direction is 2.38 ± 0.04 × 10−7 kg, and in the radial direction, it is 1.18 ± 0.02 × 10−7 kg. We explain the anti-sunward dust flux as the effect of nonuniform gas emission between the night- and dayside of the nucleus, which acts in combination with the solar radiation pressure. We compared the cumulated dust mass of particles ≤5 μm with particles ≥100 μm. The retrieved ratio of ≈2% implies a differential size distribution index of ≈−3.0, which confirms that particles of size ≥0.1 mm dominate the dust coma cross-section of 67P during the entire orbit. Conclusions. Submicrometer- to micrometer-sized dust mass flux measurements were made for the first time from the arising of cometary activity until its extinction. They indicate that these particles do not provide a substantial optical scattering in the coma of 67P with respect to the scattering caused by millimeter-sized particles. Abstract

Bulk oxygen isotope data has the potential to match extraterrestrial samples to parent body sources based on distinctive δ18O and Δ17O ratios. We analysed 10 giant (>500µm) micrometeorites using combined µCT and O-isotope analysis to pair internal textures to inferred parent body groups. We identify three ordinary chondrite particles (L and LL groups), four from CR chondrites and the first micrometeorite from the enstatite chondrite (EH4) group. In addition, two micrometeorites are from hydrated carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies with 16O-poor isotopic compositions above the terrestrial fractionation line. They experienced intense aqueous alteration, contain pseudomorphic chondrules and are petrographically similar to the CM1/CR1 chondrites. These micrometeorites may be members of the newly established CY chondrites and/or derived from the enigmatic “Group 4” micrometeorite population, previously identified by Yada et al., 2005 [GCA, 69:5789-5804], Suavet et al., 2010 [EPSL, 293:313-320] (and others). One of our 16O-poor micrometeorite plots on the same isotopic trendline as the CO, CM and CY chondrites – “the CM mixing line” (with a slope of ~0.7 and a δ17O intercept of -4.23‰), implies a close relationship and potentially a genetic link to these hydrated chondrites. If position along the CM mixing line reflects the amount of 16O-poor (heavy) water-ice accreted onto the parent body at formation, then the CY chondrites and these 16O-poor micrometeorites must have accreted at least as much water-ice as CM chondrites but potentially more. In addition, thermal metamorphism could have played a role in further raising the bulk O-isotope compositions through the preferential loss of isotopically light water during phyllosilicate dehydration. The study of micrometeorites provides insights into asteroid belt diversity through the discovery of material not currently sampled by larger meteorites, perhaps as a result of atmospheric entry biases preventing the survival of large blocks of friable hydrated material.

Abstract

Space weathering produces variations in the optical properties of small solar system body surfaces. Laboratory studies have been performed by several groups on different meteorite classes, aimed at simulating space weathering by using ion irradiation and laser ablation. Here we present new FTIR spectral imaging data of ion irradiated carbonaceous chondrites (CV Allende and CM Murchison meteorites), simulating solar wind irradiation on primitive asteroids. Irradiation conditions (40 keV He+ and Ar+ up to 3.1016 ion/cm2) were reported in detail in previous studies. The new analyses were performed with a FTIR micro-spectrometer equipped with an FPA (Focal Plane Array) detector. Micro-reflectance spectra were acquired in the 2.5–12 μm range using a spot size of 20 μm and scanning large areas (from mm2 to cm2) of the meteorite pellets, both on virgin areas and on areas irradiated with different doses. Spectral maps allow us characterizing the heterogeneity of the meteorites at the 20 μm spatial scale. In the irradiated areas, we observe spectral modifications of both anhydrous and hydrated silicates. Spectral shifts are observed after irradiation, larger for anhydrous than hydrated silicates. Compositional heterogeneity of the pristine materials and irradiation effects are compared to each other as a function of the irradiation dose, to determine which spectral features are more sensitive to space weathering. Results are then compared with the IR spectral capabilities of instruments onboard the Hayabusa2/JAXA and OSIRIS-REx/NASA spacecrafts, to provide these missions with spectral criteria on how to distinguish space weathering from compositional heterogeneity effects at the asteroid, and in view of surface selection for sample return.

Abstract

International audience; Anhydrous pyroxene-rich interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) have been proposed as surface analogs for about two-thirds of all C-complex asteroids. However, this suggestion appears to beinconsistent with the presence of hydrated silicates on the surfaces of some of these asteroids, including Ceres. Here, we report the presence of enstatite (pyroxene) on the surface of two C-type asteroids (Ceres and Eugenia) based on their spectral properties in the mid-infrared range. The presence of this component is particularly unexpected in the case of Ceres, becausemost thermal evolution models predict a surface consisting of hydrated compounds only. The most plausible scenario is that Ceres' surface has been partially contaminated by exogenous enstatite-rich material, possibly coming from the Beagle asteroid family. This scenario questions a similar origin for Ceres and the remaining C-types, and it possibly supports recent results obtained by the Dawn mission (NASA) that Ceres may have formed in the very outer solar system. Abstract

International audience; Hayabusa‐returned samples offer a unique perspective for understanding the link between asteroids and cosmomaterials available in the laboratory, and provide insights on the early stages of surface space weathering. This study characterizes the mineralogy and the extent of space weathering of the three Itokawa particles RA‐QD02‐0163, RA‐QD02‐0174, and RA‐QD02‐0213 provided by JAXA to our consortium. We report here a series of results based on nondestructive analyses through visible‐near‐infrared reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. Results were obtained on the raw particles, both in their original containers and deposited on diamond windows. Identification of the minerals, characterization of their elemental compositions, and measurements of their relative abundances were led through Raman spectroscopy in punctual and automatic mode. Reflectance spectra in the visible and near‐IR wavelengths constrain the mineralogy of the grains and allow direct comparison with the surface of Itokawa. The spectra reflect the extent of space weathering experienced by the three particles. Particle RA‐QD02‐0163 consists of a heterogeneous mixture of minerals: olivine (Fo76) dominates an assemblage with both Ca‐rich (En50, Wo50) and Ca‐poor (En85) pyroxenes. The elemental compositions of the silicates are consistent with those previously reported for distinct Hayabusa particles. Particles RA‐QD‐0174 and RA‐QD02‐0213 are solely composed of olivine, whose chemical composition is similar to that observed in RA‐QD02‐0163. It has been previously shown that the S‐type asteroid 25143 Itokawa is a breccia of poorly equilibrated LL4 and highly equilibrated LL5 and LL6 materials. The three particles studied here can be related to the least metamorphosed lithology (LL4) based on the high forsterite content of the olivine. Neither carbonaceous matter nor hydrated minerals were detected through Raman on the three allocated particles. The NIR‐VIS reflectance (incidence = 45°, light collection at e = 0°) spectra of the three particles, in particular the 1 μm band, are consistent with the presence of both olivine and pyroxene detected via Raman. The spectra of particles RA‐QD02‐0163 and RA‐QD02‐0213 are also fully compatible with the ground‐based observations of asteroid (25143) Itokawa in terms of both spectral features and slope. By contrast, particle RA‐QD02‐0174 has a similar 1 μm band depth but higher (redder) spectral slope than the surface of Itokawa. This probably reveals a variable extent of space weathering among the regolith particles. RA‐QD02‐0174 may contain a higher amount of nanophase metallic iron and nanophase FeS. Such phases are products by space weathering induced by solar wind, previously detected on other Itokawa particles.

Abstract

Recently Sumi et al. (2011) reported evidence for a large population of planetary-mass objects (PMOs) that are either unbound or orbit host stars in orbits > 10 AU. Their result was deduced from the statistical distribution of durations of gravitational microlensing events observed by the MOA collaboration during 2006 and 2007. Here we study the feasibility of measuring the mass of an individual PMO through microlensing by examining a particular event, MOA-2011-BLG-274. This event was unusual as the duration was short, the magnification high, the source-size effect large and the angular Einstein radius small. Also, it was intensively monitored from widely separated locations under clear skies at low air masses. Choi et al. (2012) concluded that the lens of the event may have been a PMO but they did not attempt a measurement of its mass. We report here a re-analysis of the event using re-reduced data. We confirm the results of Choi et al. and attempt a measurement of the mass and distance of the lens using the terrestrial parallax effect. Evidence for terrestrial parallax is found at a 3 sigma level of confidence. The best fit to the data yields the mass and distance of the lens as 0.80 +/- 0.30 M_J and 0.80 +/- 0.25 kpc respectively. We exclude a host star to the lens out to a separation ~ 40 AU. Drawing on our analysis of MOA-2011-BLG-274 we propose observational strategies for future microlensing surveys to yield sharper results on PMOs including those down to super-Earth mass., 44 pages, 12 figures, to appear in ApJ

Abstract

Little is known about carbonaceous asteroids weathering in space as previous studies have struggled to define a general spectral trend among dark surfaces. Here we present experiments on ion irradiation of the Allende meteorite, performed using 40 keV He+ and Ar+ ions, as a simulation of solar wind irradiation of primitive bodies surfaces. We used different fluences up to 3 × 1016 ions/cm2, corresponding to short timescales of ∼103–104 yrs in the main asteroid belt. Samples were analyzed before and after irradiation using visible to far-IR (0.4–50 μm) reflectance spectroscopy, and Raman micro-spectroscopy. Similarly to what observed in previous experiments, results show a reddening and darkening of VIS–NIR reflectance spectra. These spectral variations are however comparable to other spectral variations due to viewing geometry, grain size, and sample preparation, suggesting an explanation for the contradictory space weathering studies of dark asteroids. After irradiation, the infrared bands of the matrix olivine silicates change profile and shift to longer wavelength, possibly as a consequence of a more efficient sputtering effect on Mg than Fe (lighter and more volatile species are preferentially sputtered backwards) and/or preferential amorphization of Mg-rich olivine. Spectral variations are compatible with the Hapke weathering model. Raman spectroscopy shows that the carbonaceous component is substantially affected by irradiation: different degrees of de-ordering are produced as a function of dose, to finally end with a highly disordered carbon. All observed modifications seem to scale with the nuclear elastic dose.

Abstract

Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide-bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu's parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. The samples are rich in phyllosilicates and carbonates, which formed through aqueous alteration reactions at low temperature, high pH, and water/rock ratios of <1 (by mass). Less altered fragments contain olivine, pyroxene, amorphous silicates, calcite, and phosphide. Numerical simulations, based on the mineralogical and physical properties of the samples, indicate that Ryugu's parent body formed ~2 million years after the beginning of Solar System formation.

24. A Mineralogical Context for the Organic Matter in the Paris Meteorite Determined by A Multi-Technique Analysis.

Abstract

This study is a multi-technique investigation of the Paris carbonaceous chondrite directly applied on two selected 500 × 500 µm² areas of a millimetric fragment, without any chemical extraction. By mapping the partial hydration of the amorphous silicate phase dominating the meteorite sample matrix, infrared spectroscopy gave an interesting glimpse into the way the fluid may have circulated into the sample and partially altered it. The TOF-SIMS in-situ analysis allowed the studying and mapping of the wide diversity of chemical moieties composing the meteorite organic content. The results of the combined techniques show that at the micron scale, the organic matter was always spatially associated with the fine-grained and partially-hydrated amorphous silicates and to the presence of iron in different chemical states. These systematic associations, illustrated in previous studies of other carbonaceous chondrites, were further supported by the identification by TOF-SIMS of cyanide and/or cyanate salts that could be direct remnants of precursor ices that accreted with dust during the parent body formation, and by the detection of different metal-containing large organic ions. Finally, the results obtained emphasized the importance of studying the specific interactions taking place between organic and mineral phases in the chondrite matrix, in order to investigate their role in the evolution story of primitive organic matter in meteorite parent bodies.
