19. Using the Reproducible Open Coding Kit & Epistemic Network Analysis to model qualitative data.

Abstract

Background: Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA) is a unified, quantitative – qualitative method aiming to draw from both methodological worlds by leveraging a data set containing raw and quantified qualitative data, as well as metadata about data providers or the data itself. ENA generates network models depicting the relative frequencies of co-occurrences for each unique pair of codes in designated segments of qualitative data. Methods: This step-by-step tutorial demonstrates how to model qualitative data with ENA through its quantification via coding and segmentation. Data was curated with the Reproducible Open Coding Kit (ROCK), a human- and machine-readable standard for representing coded qualitative data, enabling researchers to document their workflow, as well as organize their data in a format that is agnostic to software of any kind. Results: ENA allows researchers to obtain insights otherwise unavailable by depicting relative code frequencies and co-occurrence patterns, facilitating a comparison of those patterns between groups and individual data providers. Conclusions: ENA aids reflexivity, moves beyond code frequencies to depict their interactions, allows researchers to easily create post-hoc groupings of data providers for various comparisons, and enables conveying complex results in a visualization that caters to both qualitative and quantitative sensibilities. Abstract

The overarching aim of the project that this study is a part of is to develop an intervention promoting COVID-19 vaccination among university students through informed decision making. Moreover, by promoting COVID-19 vaccination and exploring the beliefs of the university students with regard to a vaccination policy that could be enforced in a university setting, we aimed to create a safe environment for students. The development of an intervention aiming at behavior change requires several steps to accomplish. In our study, first, we aimed to select the relevant determinants (and beliefs) of university students’ intention to get the COVID-19 vaccine to specify the change objectives of our intervention. Please note that by COVID19 vaccine, we mean the COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in Europe. This part of the study has been reported separately and is not within the scope of this pre-registration. Due to the broad focus, we decided to parse the studies into two while analyzing the data and communicating the findings. The first paper was limited to the quantitative parts of the survey. This pre-registration and the following paper concern the qualitative parts of the survey, which require thorough coding and analysis. Second, in order to facilitate the informed decision making around the COVID-19 vaccination, we aim to gather information on a) students’ information needs around COVID-19 vaccination, b) the type of communication channels through which they would like to receive the information, and c) what students consider trusted sources of information. This part is aimed at generating knowledge. (Part A) Imposing the COVID-19 vaccines as a prerequisite to enter certain facilities is a debate ongoing worldwide. Our third and final aim is to explore if the COVID-19 vaccine requirement was implemented within a university setting, what would be the reactions of the students to this policy. We asked students if they agree or disagree (on a 7-point Likert scale) with the statement “Only people who are already vaccinated should be allowed to come on-site (UM buildings) in case that current COVID-19 prevention guidelines still apply.” and requested to elaborate their response in writing. This part is aimed at both generating knowledge and developing policy. (Part B) Please note that this pre-registration concerns parts A and B of the study, the qualitative parts.

Abstract

Challenges that arise during a time of crisis, as the current COVID-19 pandemic, are a basis for recognizing how different governments handle the governance of units such as schools and issues related to democracy and social inequality. By paying attention to similar or contrasting issues in the political welfare states’ characteristics and organization, the crisis's impact on different countries can be identified and can provide learning examples beyond the study's phenomena. Although Brazil and Sweden are historically and culturally diverse countries, they also share similarities in being politicized by global trends such as neoliberalism. The paper examines the two governments’ discourses and how centralization, decentralization, and neoliberalism and the resulting shift to privatized public services can form a basis for understanding declines in democracy and social inequality in education in both countries. The following research question guides the work, how are democracy and social inequality expounded in Brazil’s and Sweden’s way of organizing education during the COVID-19 pandemic? To investigate how democracy and social inequality were expounded in Brazil’s and Sweden’s way of organizing education during the COVID-19 pandemic, we used a quantitative ethnographic approach to analyze the governments’ discourses. With quantitative ethnographic techniques we identified how the states organized discussions and actions to investigate and solve socio-educational issues related to democracy and how access to resources for education related to inequalities. The governmental intensity of keeping the economy functioning was observed to be influenced by the advance of neoliberalism in both countries. In organizing the education during the COVID-19 pandemic, neoliberalism is pertaining to authoritarianism in Brazil and more culturally contingent actions related to the ethos - “openness” - in Sweden.

Abstract

Quantitative Ethnography (QE) is a novel discipline unifying quantitative and qualitative methodologies with various methods and tools. We aimed to conduct a systematic review of the proceedings from the 1st International Conference for Quantitative Ethnography in order to compare methodological decisions researchers made. Data was extracted with a standardized template and coded deductively by a team of researchers. Our findings show that although many QE terms and processes (e.g. concerning coding and segmentation) were employed, they were often not reported explicitly or defined. We encourage open communication about methodology for the benefit and progression of the QE community.
