Biochar (BC) is widely used in the remediation of soil and wastewater polluted by heavy metals, but there are few reports on the characteristics of biochar derived via pyrolysis from different traditional Chinese medicine residues (TCMRs). In this study, biochars were prepared by slow pyrolysis of five common Chinese medicine residues, namely, Salvia miltiorrhiza (DNS), Ligusticum striatum (CX), Angelica sinensis (DG), Codonopsis pilosula (DGS), and Astragalus membranaceus (HQ). The biochars were systematically investigated by determining their physicochemical properties and using common characterization techniques. The Spearman correlation matrix between factors was used to examine relationships between properties of different biochars. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption characteristics of biochar on Pb(II) and the mechanisms involved. The results showed that the physicochemical properties and adsorption performance of biochar were related to the type of its pharmaceutical residue. Biochar produced from materials with higher lignin content showed a better adsorption of the heavy metal Pb(II). All biochars were alkaline, with yields ranging from 29.30 to 38.65 %, and the main structure comprised of mesopores and macropores. The FT-IR and Boehm experiments revealed that the various TCMR biochars contained comparable functional groups, but their content varied. XRD and TEM results show that all biochar is amorphous with a crystalline structure, with the surface dominated by cellulose crystals and graphitic carbon. The O/C ratio ( 0.99), and their isotherms were consistent with the Langmuir model (R2 > 0.99), indicating a monolayer chemisorption process. The biochar samples exhibited varying adsorption capacities for Pb(II), with the highest capacity observed for BDNS (36.42 mg/g). The adsorption mechanism mainly involved precipitation, complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups, and ion exchange. This study indicates that biochars from herbal residues exhibit promising potential for adsorbing heavy metal Pb(II), suggesting biochar production as a viable method for recycling herbal residues.

BackgroundAtractylodes macrocephala Koidz. (AM) is a functional food with strong ant-colitis activity. AM volatile oil (AVO) is the main active ingredient of AM. However, no study has investigated the improvement effect of AVO on ulcerative colitis (UC) and the bioactivity mechanism also remains unknown. Here, we investigated whether AVO has ameliorative activity on acute colitis mice and its mechanism from the perspective of gut microbiota.MethodsAcute UC was induced in C57BL/6 mice by dextran sulfate sodium and treated with the AVO. Body weight, colon length, colon tissue pathology, and so on were assessed. The gut microbiota composition was profiled using 16s rRNA sequencing and global metabolomic profiling of the feces was performed. The results showed that AVO can alleviate bloody diarrhea, colon damage, and colon inflammation in colitis mice. In addition, AVO decreased potentially harmful bacteria (Turicibacter, Parasutterella, and Erysipelatoclostridium) and enriched potentially beneficial bacteria (Enterorhabdus, Parvibacter, and Akkermansia). Metabolomics disclosed that AVO altered gut microbiota metabolism by regulating 56 gut microbiota metabolites involved in 102 KEGG pathways. Among these KEGG pathways, many metabolism pathways play an important role in maintaining intestine homeostasis, such as amino acid metabolism (especially tryptophan metabolism), bile acids metabolism, and retinol metabolism.ConclusionIn conclusion, our study indicated that AVO can be expected as novel prebiotics to treat ulcerative colitis, and modulating the composition and metabolism of gut microbiota may be its pharmacological mechanism.

In recent years, the quality and safety issues of Chinese medicinal herbs have received great attention worldwide. Thereinto, heavy metal contamination has been one of the most serious concerns. Compared to the wide research in the analysis of heavy metals in medicinal herbs, the studies on the removal of heavy metals are relatively limited. In this study, polyethylene glycol functionalized Fe3O4@MIL-101(Cr) (Fe3O4@MIL-101(Cr)@PEG) was designed and synthesized to remove heavy metals from the decoction of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. The in-house fabricated Fe3O4@MIL-101(Cr)@PEG was characterized by a porous structure and a large specific surface area. Then, the efficiency of the material for the removal of five heavy metals was tested under optimal adsorption conditions. Meanwhile, the content of Senkyunolide A, Senkyunolide I, and Ferulic acid, the solid content, and the HPLC fingerprints similarity were used as the quality monitoring indicators of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort decoction before and after the heavy metal removal. Results showed that the magnetic nanomaterial had excellent removal efficiency for As5+ (81.4 %), Cd2+ (88.19 %), and Pb2+ (83.79 %) and certain removal efficiency for Ni2+ (51.59 %) and Zn2+ (55.4 %) under the spiked concentration of 50 μg/mL. The content of Senkyunolide A, Senkyunolide I, and Ferulic acid were decreased by less than 8.00 % after the removal of heavy metals. Besides, the loss rate of solid content was only 0.18 %, and the fingerprints similarity was over 99.9 %. The results indicated that Fe3O4@MIL-101(Cr)@PEG could efficiently and selectively remove heavy metals from Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort without affecting its effective components. Due to the advantages of low-cost, simple manipulation, and good efficiency, the material can be recommended for heavy metals removal from the aqueous solutions of medicinal herbs, providing a new and promising application for the removal of exogenous contaminants in medicinal herbs.

Abstract In recent decades, herbal medicines have played more and more important roles in the healthcare system in the world because of the good efficacy. However, with the increasing use of herbal medicines, the toxicity induced by herbal medicines has become a global issue. Therefore, it is needed to investigate the mechanism behind the efficacy and toxicity of herbal medicines. In this study, using Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) as an example, we adopted a systems pharmacology approach to investigate the mechanism of Fuzi in treating rheumatoid arthritis and in inducing cardiac toxicity and neurotoxicity. The results showed that Fuzi has 25 bioactive compounds that act holistically on 61 targets and 27 pathways to treat rheumatoid arthritis, and modulation of inflammation state is one of the main mechanisms of Fuzi. In addition, the toxicity of Fuzi is linked to 32 compounds that act on 187 targets and 4 pathways, and the targets and pathways can directly modulate the flow of Na+, Ca2+, and K+. We also found out that non-toxic compounds such as myristic acid can act on targets of toxic compounds and therefore may influence the toxicity. The results not only reveal the efficacy and toxicity mechanism of Fuzi, but also add new concept for understanding the toxicity of herbal medicines, i.e., the compounds that are not directly toxic may influence the toxicity as well.

Gut microbiota, a group of microorganisms that live in the gastrointestinal tract, plays important roles in health and disease. One mechanism that gut microbiota in modulation of the functions of hosts is achieved through synthesizing and releasing a series of metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids. In recent years, increasing evidence has indicated that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. On one hand, dietary compounds can modulate the composition and function of gut microbiota; on the other hand, gut microbiota can metabolize the dietary compounds. Although there are several reviews on gut microbiota and diets, there is no focused review on the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites. In this review, we first briefly discussed the types of gut microbiota metabolites, their origins, and the reasons that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. Then, focusing on gut microbiota-derived compounds, we discussed the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived compounds and the following effects on health. Furthermore, we give our perspectives on the research direction of the related research fields. Understanding the roles of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites will expand our knowledge of how diets affect the host health and disease, thus eventually enable the personalized diets and nutrients.

Abstract Background Intermittent or prolonged exposure to severe cold stress disturbs energy homeostasis and can lead to hypothermia, heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, and so on. As the typical “hot” traditional Chinese medicine, Aconite has been widely used to treat cold-associated diseases for thousands of years, but its critical mechanisms for the promotion of thermogenesis are not fully resolved. Gut microbiota and its metabolites play a crucial role in maintaining energy homeostasis. Here, we investigated whether the aqueous extracts of Aconite (AA) can enhance thermogenesis through modulation of the composition and metabolism of gut microbiota in hypothermic rats. Methods The therapeutic effects of AA on body temperature, energy intake, and the histopathology of white adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue of hypothermic rats were assessed. Microbiota analysis based on 16 S rRNA and targeted metabolomics for bile acids (BAs) were used to evaluate the composition of gut microbiota and BAs pool. The antibiotic cocktail treatment was adopted to further confirm the relationship between the gut microbiota and the thermogenesis-promoting effects of AA. Results Our results showed a sharp drop in rectal temperature and body surface temperature in hypothermic rats. Administration of AA can significantly increase core body temperature, surface body temperature, energy intake, browning of white adipose tissue, and thermogenesis of brown adipose tissue. Importantly, these ameliorative effects of AA were accompanied by the shift of the disturbed composition of gut microbiota toward a healthier profile and the increased levels of BAs. In addition, the depletion of gut microbiota and the reduction of BAs caused by antibiotic cocktails reduced the thermogenesis-promoting effect of AA. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that AA promoted thermogenesis in rats with hypothermia via regulating gut microbiota and BAs metabolism. Our findings can also provide a novel solution for the treatment of thermogenesis-associated diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disorder in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we examined the pharmacological effects of ginsenoside Rg1, a natural compound with low bioavailability, on the acute experimental colitis mice induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and explored underlying mechanisms. Acute UC was induced in C57BL/6 mice by 2.5% DSS for 7 days, meanwhile, 2 mg/10 g b.w. ginsenoside Rg1 was administrated to treat the mice. Body weight, colon length, colon tissue pathology, and colon tissue inflammatory cytokines were assessed. The composition structure of gut microbiota was profiled using 16s rRNA sequencing. Global metabolomic profiling of the feces was performed, and tryptophan and its metabolites in the serum were detected. The results showed that Rg1 significantly ameliorated DSS-induced colonic injury and colonic inflammation. In addition, Rg1 also partly reversed the imbalance of gut microbiota composition caused by DSS. Rg1 intervention can regulate various metabolic pathways of gut microbiota such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis and vitamin B6 metabolism and the most prominent metabolic alteration was tryptophan metabolism. DSS decreased the levels of tryptophan metabolites in the serum, including indole-3-carboxaldehyde, indole-3-lactic acid, 3-indolepropionic acid, and niacinamide and Rg1 can increase the levels of these metabolites. In conclusion, the study discovered that Rg1 can protect the intestinal barrier and alleviate colon inflammation in UC mice, and the underlying mechanism is closely related to the regulation of gut microbiota composition and microbial tryptophan metabolism.

The Src-homology 2 domain-containing phosphatase 2 (SHP2), which is encoded by PTPN11, participates in many cellular signaling pathways and is closely related to various tumorigenesis. Inhibition of the abnormal activity of SHP2 by small molecules is an important part of cancer treatment. Here, three abietane diterpenoids, named compounds 1–3, were isolated from Ajuga ovalifolia var. calantha. Spectroscopic analysis was used to identify the exact structure of the compounds. The enzymatic kinetic experiment and the cellular thermal shift assay showed compound 2 selectively inhibited SHP2 activity in vitro. Molecular docking indicated compound 2 targeted the SHP2 catalytic domain. The predicted pharmacokinetic properties by SwissADME revealed that compound 2 passed the majority of the parameters of common drug discovery rules. Compound 2 restrained A549 proliferation (IC50 = 8.68 ± 0.96 μM), invasion and caused A549 cell apoptosis by inhibiting the SHP2–ERK/AKT signaling pathway. Finally, compound 2 (Ajuforrestin A) is a potent and efficacious SHP2 inhibitor and may be a promising compound for human lung epithelial cancer treatment.

Magnetoelectric dipoles have attracted global research attention due to its broadband, unidirectional, and high front-to-back ratio characteristics. This study implemented a co-simulation between a basic magnetoelectric dipole and its front feeding circuit through the step-by-step numerical extraction of its equivalent circuit model equipped with lumped and frequency-independent components. First, the series resonance subcircuit was derived from the series resonance point in the impedance of the magnetoelectric dipole. Second, the parallel resonance sub-circuit was achieved based on the parallel resonance point. By combining the series and parallel sub-circuits according to the sequence of their resonance frequency, the final form of the equivalent circuit for the basic magnetoelectric dipole was realized. Furthermore, to obtain the component values of the proposed circuit, a numerical fitting technique was adopted to accurately match the input impedance of the antenna and its equivalent circuit. A comparison of the circuit and antenna electromagnetic simulations showed that they agreed well with each other. Hence, the correctness and feasibility of the extraction process were verified. The overall results showed that the proposed circuit model can easily substitute for a basic magnetoelectric dipole in the implementation of antenna/circuit co-simulation in circuit simulators.

Gut microbiota, a collection of microorganisms that live within gastrointestinal tract, provides crucial signaling metabolites for the physiological of hosts. In healthy state, gut microbiota metabolites are helpful for maintaining the basic functions of hosts, whereas disturbed production of these metabolites can lead to numerous diseases such as metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Although there are many reviews about the specific mechanisms of gut microbiota metabolites on specific diseases, there is no comprehensive summarization of the functions of these metabolites. In this Opinion, we discuss the knowledge of gut microbiota metabolites including the types of gut microbiota metabolites and their ways acting on targets. In addition, we summarize their physiological and pathologic functions in health and diseases, such as shaping the composition of gut microbiota and acting as nutrition. This paper can be helpful for understanding the roles of gut microbiota metabolites and thus provide guidance for developing suitable therapeutic strategies to combat microbial-driven diseases and improve health. Two new ecdysteroid glycosides, sileneosides I and J (1 and 2), along with four known ecdysteroids (3- 6) were isolated from the rhizomes of Silene tatarinowii Regel. Their structures were determined based on physicochemical properties and spectroscopic methods. In addition, the cytotoxicity of compounds 1-6 was evaluated in vitro in human SGC790, HCT116, A549, and BEL7404 tumor cell lines. The results showed that compounds 1 and 2 exhibited weak cytotoxicity against SGC790 (IC50 82.58 ± 0.53 µM) and A549 cells (96.62 ± 0.58 µM), respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This meta-analysis analyzed the clinical pregnancy outcomes of repeated implantation failure (RIF) patients treated with immunomodulatory therapies. Publications (published by August 16, 2021) were identified by searching the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. The quality of the studies was evaluated with the Cochrane bias risk assessment tool, and a network meta-analysis was performed with Stata 14.0. The outcomes were clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), live birth rate (LBR), and implantation rate (IR). The results of our network meta-analysis of 16 RCTs (including 2,008 participants) show that PBMCs, PRP, and SC-GCSF can significantly improve the CPR compared with LMWH (PBMCs: OR 2.15; 95% CI 1.21–3.83; PRP: OR 2.38; 95% CI 1.08–5.24; SC-GCSF: OR 2.46; 95% CI 1.05–5.72). The LBR of PRP was significantly higher than those of IU-GCSF (OR 3.81; 95% CI 1.22–11.86), LMWH (OR 4.38; 95% CI 1.50–12.90), and intralipid (OR 3.85; 95% CI 1.03–14.29), and the LBR of PBMCs was also significantly better than that of LMWH (OR 2.35; 95% CI 1.14–4.85). Furthermore, PRP treatment significantly improved the IR compared with LMWH treatment (OR 2.81; 95% CI 1.07–7.4). The limited evidence from existing RCTs suggests that PBMCs and PRP are the best therapeutic options for RIF patients. However, owing to the quantity limitation, more top-quality research is required to obtain additional high-level evidence.

Abstract This letter presents a novel C‐band rectifier that is capable of handling high input power. The rectifier consists of a Schottky diode, an impedance matching circuit with a compensation microstrip structure, and an output filter with harmonic suppression and ripple smoothing. The experimental results indicate that the rectifier yields a conversion efficiency exceeding 70% and a peak efficiency of 74.1% over a wide input power range of 20 to 26 dBm (6 dB) at 5.8 GHz, utilizing a single Si‐based Schottky diode. Furthermore, the rectifier has a compact size of 28 mm × 15 mm. Given its cost‐effectiveness and outstanding performance, this rectifier presents an attractive option for large‐scale microwave power applications.

The outbreak of COVID-19 is synchronized with the outbreak of the infodemic, which directly affected the sentiment and behaviours of investors and thus affected the stock market. At the same time, the outbreak of the infodemic has led to the information infection of the public. With the information infection, panic, anxiety, and other emotions have spread among the public, affecting the behaviours of investors, and thus affecting the stock returns. This paper explores the impact of the infodemic on the stock market by selecting keywords related to the “epidemic situation”, using the Baidu information index as an indicator to measure the infodemic, and the Baidu search index as an indicator to measure the degree of information infection. The empirical findings reveal that: First, the more serious the infodemic, the more severe the information infection; Second, the deeper the infodemic, the lower the stock returns of A-share listed companies; Third, there is a phenomenon that the infodemic affects the stock returns through the intermediary of information infection in the stock market. Sea fog detection has received widespread attention because it plays a vital role in maritime activities. Due to the lack of sea observation data, meteorological satellites with high temporal and spatial resolution have become an essential means of sea fog detection. However, the performance is unsatisfactory because low clouds and sea fog are hard to distinguish on satellite images because they have similar spectral radiance characteristics. To address this difficulty, a new method based on a two-stage deep learning strategy was proposed to detect daytime sea fog in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. We first utilized a fully connected network to separate the clear sky from sea fog and clouds. Then, a convolutional neural network was used to extract the differences between low clouds and sea fog on 16 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) observation bands. In addition, we built a Yellow and Bohai Sea Fog (YBSF) dataset by pixel-wise labelling AHI images into three categories (i.e., clear sky, cloud, and sea fog). Five comparable methods were used on the YBSF dataset to appraise the performance of our method. The vertical feature mask (VFM) generated by Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) was also used to verify the detection accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for sea fog detection.

So far, plenty of microwave power circuits such as microwave diode rectifiers are mainly designed and analyzed by conventional electromagnetic (EM) co-simulation method based on the semiconductor equivalent circuit models. However, the simplified equivalent circuit model may contribute to loss of precision at high frequencies or under high power. Compared with the equivalent circuit model, the semiconductor physical model provides a means for studying the physics of electron transport, and thus, better describes the semiconductor device. This paper explores analyzing microwave diode rectifiers by employing a physical model-based field-circuit co-simulation method. This method combines the physical model-based circuit simulation to the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD)-based field-circuit co-simulation and thus, achieves accurate and effective hybrid full-wave field-circuit co-simulation. For validation, two diode rectifiers working at S- and C-band, respectively, are simulated and analyzed by the proposed method. The simulation result agrees well with measurement and shows higher accuracy than the equivalent circuit model-based simulation.

Butylphthalide is one of the first-line drugs for ischemic stroke therapy, while no biosynthetic enzyme for butylphthalide has been reported. Here, we present a haplotype-resolved genome of Ligusticum chuanxiong, a long-cultivated and phthalide-rich medicinal plant in Apiaceae. On the basis of comprehensive screening, four Fe(II)-and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases and two CYPs were mined and further biochemically verified as phthalide C-4/C-5 desaturases (P4,5Ds) that effectively promoted the forming of (S)-3-n-butylphthalide and butylidenephthalide. The substrate promiscuity and functional redundancy featured for P4,5Ds may contribute to the high phthalide diversity in L. chuanxiong. Notably, comparative genomic evidence supported L. chuanxiong as a homoploid hybrid with Ligusticum sinense as a potential parent. The two haplotypes demonstrated exceptional structure variance and diverged around 3.42 million years ago. Our study is an icebreaker for the dissection of phthalide biosynthetic pathway and reveals the hybrid origin of L. chuanxiong, which will facilitate the metabolic engineering for (S)-3-n-butylphthalide production and breeding for L. chuanxiong.
