For a large-scale cyclotron using normal conducting magnet coils, 10 h or more are required to obtain a highly stable magnetic field because heat transfer from the coils changes the temperature of the magnets gradually. To suppress the heat transfer and stabilize the magnet temperature in the TIARA K110 cyclotron, water-cooled copper plates were inserted between the main coil and the magnetic yoke. The heat generated by the main coil depends on its circulating current, which depends on the accelerated ion beam. To stabilize the magnet temperature, a technique was developed to control the temperature of the cooling water of the copper plates depending on the main coil current. Consequently, the temperature of the magnet was stabilized successfully to 24 ± 0.3 °C for various ion beams, and the magnetic field was maintained at ΔB/B = 1 × 10 -5 after a few hours from initiating cyclotron operation.

The interfaces of a perovskite solar cell significantly influence the charge processes in the cell, which contributes to the device performance with direct implication for surface potential, electronic structure, and chemical reactivity. The properties of the interface are strongly affected by the surface termination. In this work, the combination of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and metastable-atom electron spectroscopy is demonstrated, to examine the surface termination of a solution-processed CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite film. The results show that the surface of the CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite film is terminated with a layer consisting of CH 3 NH 3 and I. The interface energy level alignment for both occupied and unoccupied levels between CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 and C60 is also examined using UPS and low-energy inverse photoelectron spectroscopy. We have developed a new technique for analysis and control of the acceleration beam phase in the cyclotron. In this technique, the beam current pattern at a fixed radius r is measured by slightly scanning the acceleration frequency in the cyclotron. The acceleration beam phase is obtained by analyzing symmetry of the current pattern. Simple procedure to control the acceleration beam phase by changing coil currents of a few trim coils was established. The beam phase width is also obtained by analyzing gradient of the decreasing part of the current pattern. We verified reliability of this technique with 260 MeV (20)Ne(7+) beams which were accelerated on different tuning condition of the cyclotron. When the acceleration beam phase was around 0 degrees, top of the energy gain of cosine wave, and the beam phase width was about 6 degrees in full width at half maximum, a clear turn pattern of the beam was observed with a differential beam probe in the extraction region. Beam phase widths of ion beams at acceleration harmonics of h=1 and h=2 were estimated without beam cutting by phase-defining slits. We also calculated the beam phase widths roughly from the beam current ratio between the injected beam and the accelerated beam in the cyclotron without operating the beam buncher. Both beam phase widths were almost the same for h=1, while phase compressions by a factor of about 3 were confirmed for h=2.

Background: Treatment outcome was evaluated in patients who underwent breast-conserving therapy and tangential irradiation. After verifying background factors including systemic therapy, the clinical efficacy of postoperative irradiation was investigated., Method: There were 708 study subjects, all of whom had early breast cancer treated between 1992 and 2002. The median follow-up period was 83 months. After breast-conserving surgery, in patients with negative surgical margins, only tangential irradiation at 48 Gy/24 fr was performed. In contrast, in those with positive surgical margins, 10 Gy of radiation boost to the tumor bed with electrons was administered after tangential irradiation with 50 Gy/25 fr. Treatment outcome was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox's proportional hazards regression model., Results: The disease-free survival and no-recurrence rates within the ipsilateral breast after 5 years were 93.4 and 97.2%, respectively. Risk factors for recurrence within the ipsilateral breast included younger age of patient, the number of positive lymph nodes, and no endocrine therapy. However, the surgical margin was not a risk factor. Risk factors for relapse outwith the ipsilateral breast included younger age, the number of positive lymph nodes, and recurrence within the ipsilateral breast., Conclusions: From our analysis of 708 Japanese women who received breast-conserving therapy, which can be regarded as a standard method in Japan, the treatment outcome was compatible with previous reports from other countries.

The prevalence of virulent R. equi having 15- to 17-kDa antigens (VapA) in fecal isolates from 13 thoroughbred foals and their dams on 5 farms in Kagoshima, Japan, and the plasmid profiles of VapA-positive isolates by restriction fragment digestion patterns were investigated to compare the genotypic variation among virulence plasmids of R. equi isolates from Japan. In total, 218 (24.6%) of 886 isolates from the feces of the 13 foals and 13 (12.5%) of 104 isolates from the feces of their dams demonstrated VapA-positive R. equi. Plasmid DNA preparations of 231 virulent isolates from foals and dams were analyzed by restriction enzyme digestion with endonucleases EcoRI, EcoT22I and HindIII and were divided into 3 types: 172 isolates contained a 90-kb type I plasmid, 57 contained a 90-kb type III plasmid and 2 contained a 90-kb type IV plasmid. This study demonstrates a geographic character in the distribution of virulence plasmids found in VapA-positive isolates from thoroughbred foals in Kagoshima.

Lactobacillus equi sp. nov. is described on the basis of 18 strains isolated as one of the predominant intestinal lactobacilli from horse faecal specimens. These 18 strains were isolated from 10 horses of 6 different farms out of 20 horses of 10 farms examined. They were gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, catalase-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile, lactic-acid-homofermentative rods. The DNA G+C content was 38.9+/-0.8 mol %. DNA-DNA hybridization failed to associate these strains closely with any of the validly described type strains used. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of representative strain YIT 0455T revealed that the new isolates represent a new Lactobacillus species, for which the name Lactobacillus equi is proposed. The type strain is YIT 0455T (= ATCC BAA-261T = JCM 10991T).

Selective adhesion to only certain epithelia is particularly common among the bacterial members of the indigenous microflora of mammals. We have found that the stratified squamous epithelium of the nonsecreting area of horse stomach is colonized by gram-positive rods. The microscopic features of a dense layer of these bacteria on the epithelium were found to be similar to those reported in mice, rats, and swine. Adhering microorganisms were isolated and identified as Lactobacillus salivarius, L. crispatus, L. reuteri, and L. agilis by DNA-DNA hybridization and 16S rRNA gene sequencing techniques. These lactobacilli associated with the horse, except for L. reuteri, were found to adhere to horse epithelial cells in vitro but not to those of rats. A symbiotic relationship of these lactobacilli with the horse is suggested.

Thirty-five patients with a variety of spinal cord tumors were studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In 22 out of these cases, the efficacy of Dimeglumine gadopentetate (Gd-DTPA) in enhancing MRI was also investigated. The results were as follows: (1) MRI was capable of discerning the level of tumors. (2) MRI was able to distinguish intramedullary from extramedullary tumors. MRI, however, could not always differentiate extradural from intradural tumors. (3) Some cases of lipoma, arteriovenous malformation and hematoma were diagnosed by MRI. (4) Gd-DTPA was found to be effective in enhancing MRI in all cases of spinal cord tumors with exception of two cases of arteriovenous malformations. In conclusion, MRI is very useful in diagnosing spinal cord tumors. MRI, when enhanced with Gd-DTPA, is capable of revealing the content of tumors but also differentiating intramedullary tumors from surrounding edema and syrinx.
