Folic acid (FA) could improve cognitive performance and attenuate brain cell injury in the aging brain; FA supplementation is also associated with inhibiting neural stem cell (NSC) apoptosis. However, its role in age-associated telomere attrition remains unclear. We hypothesized that FA supplementation attenuates age-associated apoptosis of NSCs in mice via alleviating telomere attrition in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8). In this study, 4-month-old male SAMP8 mice were assigned equal numbers to four different diet groups ( n = 15). Fifteen age-matched senescence-accelerated mouse resistant 1 mice, fed with the FA-normal diet, were used as the standard aging control group. After FA treatment for 6 months, all mice were sacrificed. NSC apoptosis, proliferation, oxidative damage, and telomere length were evaluated by immunofluorescence and Q-fluorescent in situ hybridization. The results showed that FA supplementation inhibited age-associated NSC apoptosis and prevented telomere attrition in the cerebral cortex of SAMP8 mice. Importantly, this effect might be explained by the decreased levels of oxidative damage. In conclusion, we demonstrate it may be one of the mechanisms by which FA inhibits age-associated NSC apoptosis by alleviating telomere length shortening.

Hydrogels have been extensively used in agriculture to improve crop yields for their excellent properties. However, they are currently used either as pesticide delivery platforms or water retention agents alone; the combination of these two functions into one agricultural hydrogel formulation has never been reported, which is crucial to promote sustainable development in agriculture. Herein, using poly(β-cyclodextrin) and adamantane-grafted poly(acrylic acid) (PAA-Ada) as the host and guest, respectively, an easy operating, multi-responsive, and safer hydrogel delivery system for insecticides is fabricated by the host-guest interaction between cyclodextrin and adamantane, which can load uniformly dispersed insecticides (fipronil, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam) up to 60%. Benefiting from the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on polymer chains, different temperatures (25, 35, and 45 °C) and pH values (5.0, 6.8, and 10.0) change the intermolecular forces within the hydrogel network and then the diffusion of the content, finally resulting in controlled release behaviors. Besides, this platform can rapidly release the insecticides in the presence of amyloglucosidase due to its ring-opening effect on cyclodextrin. Moreover, this platform exhibits high water-retaining capacity toward soil, which can increase the maximum water absorption of nutrient soil and quartz sand by 31.6 and 13.9%, respectively, and slows down the water loss. Compared with commercial formulation, this smart system reduces the acute toxicity to non-target organism earthworms by 52.4% and improves the efficacy against target organism aphids by 47.3%, showing better durability, lower environmental toxicity, and higher efficiency. To our knowledge, this is the first idea that simultaneously adopts the water-retaining capacity and controlled release ability of hydrogels to improve insecticide efficacy. In this regard, this smart hydrogel platform holds great potentials as slow-release granules with water-holding ability for protection against insect pests, providing an alternative platform for the sustainable development in green agriculture.

This study explores whether the differences in cognitive performance among individuals with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) are attributable to the duration of AF and anticoagulant therapy and explores the possible inflammatory mechanism of cognitive dysfunction related to AF.A total of 260 patients aged 50-75 years without previous cerebrovascular events were enrolled in this study. These 260 patients had been divided into the AF group (140 patients) and sinus rhythm group (120 patients). In the AF group, we divided participants into cognitive impairment (CI) group (90 patients) and cognitive normal (CN) group (50 patients). In the sinus rhythm group, we also divided participants into CI group (61 patients) and CN group (59 patients). The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess the cognitive function of all participants. Neuronal-derived exosomes were enriched in peripheral blood by immunoprecipitation and were confirmed by a transmission electron microscope, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and western blot. Alzheimer's disease-pathogenic exosomal proteins and inflammatory cytokines were quantified. The association between AF and cognitive function was estimated by logistic regression analysis. ANOVA or Welch's t-test compared the difference in protein concentrations between groups.Non-anticoagulant therapy in patients with AF was significantly associated with CI (OR = 13.99, 95% CI: 2.67-73.36, p .01). The incidence of dementia in patients with AF 3 years was significantly higher than in patients with AF ≤ 3 years, but there was no significant difference in total cognitive dysfunction (mild cognitive impairment [MCI] + dementia) (p = .126). The adjusted exosome concentrations of T-tau and amyloid-β protein 42 (Aβ42) in the CI group were significantly higher than in the CN group (p .001). The serum concentrations of IL-6 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in patients with AF were higher than those in patients with sinus rhythm (p .001).Aβ42 and T-tau in peripheral blood neuronal-derived exosomes maybe be associated with the early diagnosis of CI in patients with permanent AF. However, the value of Aβ42 and T-tau for CI in patients with permanent AF still needs to be confirmed in future randomized control trials.

Mitochondrial genomes have widely been used as molecular markers in understanding the patterns and processes of nematode evolution. The species in genus Cruznema are free-living bacterivores as well as parasites of crickets and mollusks. The complete mitochondrial genome of C. tripartitum was determined through high-throughput sequencing as the first sequenced representative of the genus Cruznema. The genome is comprised of 14,067 bp nucleotides, and includes 12 protein-coding, two rRNA, and 22 tRNA genes. Phylogenetic analyses based on amino acid data support C. tripartitum as a sister to the clade containing Caenorhabditis elegans and Oscheius chongmingensis. The analysis of gene arrangement suggested that C. tripartitum shares the same gene order with O. chongmingensis, Litoditis marina, Diplocapter coronatus, genus Caenorhabditis, and Pristionchus pacificus. Thus, the mitochondrial gene arrangement is highly conserved in the family Rhabditidae as well as some species in Diplogasteridae.

SummaryCitrus is one of the most important tree crops worldwide and citrus production is threatened by Huanglongbing (HLB), a devasting citrus disease caused byCandidatusLiberibacter. HLB is a pathogen-triggered immune disease, in which the pathogen initiates systemic and chronic immune responses including the excessive production of reactive oxidative species, which subsequently lead to cell death of phloem tissues and HLB disease symptoms. Here, we identified putative genetic determinants of HLB pathogenicity by integrating citrus genomic resources to characterize the pan-genome of accessions that differ in their response to HLB. Genome-wide association mapping and analysis of allele-specific expression between susceptible, tolerant, and resistant accessions further refined candidates underlying the response to HLB. To enable these analyses we first developed a phased diploid assembly ofCitrus sinensis‘Newhall’ genome and produced resequencing data for 91 citrus accessions that differ in their response to HLB. These data were combined with previous resequencing data from 356 sequenced accessions for genome-wide association mapping of the HLB response. Genes with HLB pathogenicity were associated with the host immune response, ROS production, and antioxidants. Overall, this study has provided a significant recourse of citrus genomic data and we have identified candidate genes to be further explored to understand the genetic determinants of HLB pathogenicity and to generate HLB resistant/tolerant citrus varieties.

Background The wettability of the target surfaces affects the wetting and deposition of pesticides on them. The properties of leaf surfaces change after infestation by Tetranychus urticae Koch. Studying the surface wettability of T. urticae and the changes in leaf wettability after infestation is important to guide the use of acaricides. Results The body surface of T. urticae is an ellipsoidal crown covered with dense cuticle striations and hairs arranged in different directions, which makes the surface of T. urticae rough and hydrophobic. The abaxial surfaces of the leaves are rougher and more hydrophobic than the adaxial surfaces. After infestation by T. urticae, the faded spots were sunken on the adaxial surface and raised on the abaxial surface, where they had formed new wide peaks and valleys. The adaxial surface became obviously rougher and more hydrophobic, while the roughness of the abaxial surface became slightly larger, and the change in hydrophobicity was not obvious. The contact angles of the studied commercial acaricide on these surfaces were greater than 65° and were affected by the infestation. Reducing the surface tension can allow for better wetting of these surfaces and eliminate changes in leaf wettability. Conclusion The surfaces of kidney bean leaves became more hydrophobic after infestation by T. urticae with hydrophobic surface. The wettability of the acaricide solution should be adjusted according to the changes in leaf wettability. This study has important theoretical guiding significance for improving effective deposition of acaricide.

Low pesticide efficiency has caused serious environmental pollution and economic loss, which are closely related to each link in the targeted delivery of pesticides. However, the existing strategies for improving pesticide utilization rate are not comprehensive, and the regulation of foliar absorption and biological activity has been neglected. As surfactants are the most important agricultural synergists, the impact, wetting, adhesion, and leaf retention behaviors of pyraclostrobin (PYR) droplets containing the surfactant Triton X (TX) series on hydrophobic scallion leaf surfaces were studied. The results showed that TX-102 can sufficiently reduce the splash and roll of droplets when they impact inclined leaves, owing to its low dynamic surface tension. Moderate wetting ability and high adhesion also maximizes leaf retention of the TX-102-added PYR solution sprayed on scallion leaves. Furthermore, TX-102 improved the permeation and absorption of PYR in scallion leaves through the synergistic effects of opening the stomata and dissolving the waxy layer. The synergistic bioactivity of TX-102 against pathogenic fungi Alternaria porri and its safety to non-target organism zebrafish have also been demonstrated. Our study provides a more comprehensive theoretical rationale for screening adjuvants to improve the effectiveness and bioavailability of pesticides and reduce the risk of pesticides entering the environment.

Cyclodextrin (CD)-based polyrotaxanes (PRs) and polypseudorotaxanes (PPRs) have attracted considerable attention due to their unique topological structures and functions. However, limited by the simple chemical structures and the single functionalization of guest polymer units like poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), to date the construction of CD-based PRs and PPRs with precisely controllable supramacromolecular structures is fairly rare. In this work, two kinds of molecular necklace-like PPRs with CD-triterpenoid pairs were prepared via the size-dictated construction, where the threaded guest polymer was a natural product-tailored polyurethane (PU-PEG-GA) with the alternating structure of triterpenoid and PEG segments via a simple step-growth polymerization. Taking advantage of the differentiation in host-guest interactions between β/γ-CD and triterpenoid pairs, β-CD simultaneously located on both PEG segments and triterpenoid units in PU-PEG-GA, while γ-CD selectively recognized triterpenoid units. Consequently, the assembly morphology of PU-PEG-GA was adjusted hierarchically from micelles to worms and vesicles upon addition of β-CD, whereas they gradually collapsed to disappear in the presence of γ-CD. Our biocompatible PPRs with precisely controllable supramacromolecular structures may lead to the exploration on understanding and simulating macromolecular recognition using natural products.

The addition of a surfactant is a constructive strategy to enhance the deposition of pesticides on plant leaves in agriculture. However, currently used surfactants normally require to be used at high concentrations, and most of them are anionic or nonionic. In this work, we found that didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), a double-chain cationic surfactant, can not only inhibit droplets from receding and rebounding but also promote sufficient spreading on paraffin and Chenopodium album L. leaf surfaces at an ultralow concentration (0.05%), in comparison with widely reported sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT). This phenomenon is attributed to the fast adsorption kinetics of DDAB from the bulk to the newly created interface (mere 100 ms), decreasing the surface tension significantly. Field experiments further prove that the addition of DDAB can significantly improve the control efficiency of herbicides. Our findings provide a simple and effective way for improving the droplet deposition on hydrophobic plant surfaces, which may lead to economic and environmental benefits in the future.

International audience; Polydiacetylenes (PDA) can undergo a blue-to-red color transition in response to external stimuli because of the extensive delocalized p-electron networks and intrinsic conformational restrictions, which make PDA particularly attractive building blocks for stimuli-responsive materials. In this work, a blue chiral C4-MOP/PDA gel was fabricated successfully by UV irradiating a white supramolecular gel that was assembled from a triterpenoid-derived gelator (C4-MOP) and a diacetylene monomer (PCDA). This photopolymerization was completed within 5 min with the generation of the new negative Cotton effect at 657 nm in the visible blue light region, which strongly revealed the transmission, amplification and visualization of molecular chirality during this gelation and the photopolymerization process. Notably, the nanotubular microstructures of the white gel C4-MOP/PCDA that curled from twisted ribbons barely changed after polymerization into C4-MOP/PDA. In addition, because C4-MOP/PDA contained an alternating ene-acetylene conjugated structure, it exhibited multiple color transitions to external stimuli including temperature, organic solvent, and mechanical force. This work provides chiral polydiacetylene assemblies by using natural triterpenoid gelators, and may open new developments in the design of smart responsive chiral PDA materials.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of rumen-protected folic acid (RPFA) on slaughter performance, visceral organ and gastrointestinal tract coefficients, and meat quality in lambs. Sixty-six lambs from 120 Hu ewes were selected based on body weight and maternal diets and then assigned to six groups using a randomised block experimental design in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. The first factor was folic acid (FA) as RPFA in the maternal diet (0 mg/kg (M0F), 16 mg/kg (M16F) or 32 mg/kg (M32F) on DM basis). The second factor was FA in the lambs’ diet from weaning until slaughter (0 mg/kg (OC) or 4·0 mg/kg (OF)). The results indicated that the addition of 16 mg/kg FA to the maternal diet increased pre-slaughter weight (PSW), dressing and meat percentage, the reticulum and omasum coefficients, length of the jejunum and ileum, tail fat and perirenal fat coefficient and a* value of the meat colour. The addition of RPFA to the lambs’ diet increased PSW, dressing and meat percentage, eye muscle area, abomasum weight, weight and length of the small intestine, but reduced the coefficients of tail fat. An M × O interaction was observed for the weights of heart, lungs, rumen and total stomach, weight and coefficient of omental fat and the girth rib value. Collectively, RPFA in the maternal and lambs’ diet improved slaughter performance and meat quality by stimulating the morphological development of the gastrointestinal tract and the distribution of fat in the body.

Injectable low-molecular-weight hydrogels (LMWHs) from biocompatible materials have attracted much attention in biomedical applications because they can adapt any desired sizes and cavity shapes. Searching for simple, biocompatible injectable LMWHs owning inherent antibacterial activity without complicated chemical modification remains an open question to avoid the tedious synthesis/purification process and the easy bacterial infection of hydrogels in a moist environment. Traditional solid supports of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) often suffer from the poor mechanical performance, the low recycling efficiency, and the mass loss in the regeneration process. To overcome this limit, in this work, we reported a natural triterpenoid-tailored low-molecular-weight gelator (LMWG) strategy to fabricate double network (DN) hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties for supporting MNPs. In this strategy, the supramolecular fibrillar structure of glycyrrhizic acid (GL) and the cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAAm) were used as the first physical network and the second chemical network, respectively. The resulting GL/PAAm DN gels possessed tough, stretchable, and compressive properties, as well as high fatigue resistance. In addition, the ice-templating technique has been used to recast the DN gel through the anisotropical growth of ice crystals for increasing the porosity and surface area. On account of the reductibility of the diglucuronic moiety of GL, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were in situ spontaneously reduced from Au(III) ions without external reducing reagents and anchored on the pore surface of Recast-GL/PAAm DN gel. This AuNP-anchored Recast-GL/PAAm DN gel can be used as a continuous flow reactor to catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol with high catalytic activity, good recyclability, and long-term stability. Our work provided an effective strategy to generate promising supports of MNPs with highly mechanical properties and excellent catalytic efficiencies.

We aim to investigate the status and influence factors of health risk behaviors among middle school students and explore the relationship between social support, family care, and the health risk behaviors. The study was conducted in 3 middle schools in the Fan county located in the Puyang city. Independent measures were applied to assess adolescent health risk behaviors, perceive social support, and family care. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the main factors that affect adolescent health risk behaviors. The total scores of health risk behaviors were 53.87 ± 9.97, and all kinds of health risk behaviors were very common. The highest score was health-compromising (2.45 ± 0.43), and the lowest score was unprotected sex behaviors (1.07 ± 0.28). Multiple regression analysis showed that sex (P.001), grade (P.001), parent relationships (P.001), father's occupation (P = .035), mother's education level (P = .011), social support (P.001), affection (P.001), and growth (P = .003) were the main factors of health risk behaviors, accounting for 25.3%. The health risk behaviors among middle school students in Fan county should attract the attention of education administration, schools, and parent due to the varied influencing factors. Related interventions should be conducted to reduce the severity and frequency of adolescent health risk behaviors and protect the health and growth of adolescents. In order to better analyze the health risk behaviors of middle school students, we will incorporate more influencing factors and carry out further causal analysis in the future.

The blood pressure (BP) control rate among treated hypertensives in China remains low at 37.5%. The relationship between home blood pressure telemonitoring (HBPT) and BP control is controversial. The authors aimed to investigate the relationship between HBPT and BP control in middle‐aged and elderly hypertensives. In total, 252 hypertension patients aged between 60 and 79 years were enrolled. The patients were given either HBPT through interactive platforms between physicians and patients (telemonitoring group, n = 126) or conventional management (routine management group, n = 126). We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of Rare-earth hexaaluminates REMgAl11O19 (RE = Pr, Nd) crystallized in a hexagonal structure with space group P63/mmc, where the magnetically coupled rare-earth ions form perfect two-dimensional triangular layers well separated along c-axis. The magnetic susceptibilities reveal the dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and no magnetic ordering down to 2 K with Curie Weiss temperature ( θ C W ) θ C W = −6.4 K and θ C W = -3.4 K for RE = Pr and Nd, respectively. Furthermore, the AFM interactions are robust against the nonmagnetic dilution by doping Lanthanum (La3+) ions. The analysis of X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra also supports the existence of AFM interactions in these two compounds. Our studies reveal a promising platform to investigate novel magnetic ground states in two-dimensional triangular lattice.

Background The nutrition state plays an important role in the progress of aging. Folate may play a role in protecting mitochondrial (mt) DNA by reducing oxidative stress. Objective The primary aim of this study was to examine the association of mitochondrial oxidative damage with risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and to explore the possible role of folate metabolites in this association in a matched case-control study. Methods Serum folate metabolites and mitochondrial function in peripheral blood cells were determined in 82 AD cases and 82 healthy controls, individually matched by age, gender, and education. Results AD patients had lower serum levels of folate and higher homocysteine (Hcy) concentration. AD patients had a reduced mtDNA copy number, higher mtDNA deletions, and increased 8-OHdG content in mtDNA indicative of reduced mitochondrial function. The highest level of mtDNA copy number would decrease the risk of AD (OR = 0.157, 95% CI: 0.058-0.422) compared to the lowest level, independently of serum folate, and Hcy levels. Serum folate levels correlated with low 8-OHdG content in mtDNA both in AD patients and controls, independently of serum Hcy level. Moreover, serum Hcy levels correlated with low copy number in mtDNA both in AD patients and controls, independently of serum folate levels. Conclusion In conclusion, mitochondrial function in peripheral blood cells could be associated with risk of AD independent of multiple covariates. AD patients with a folate deficiency or hyperhomocysteinemia had low mitochondrial function in peripheral blood cells. However, further randomized controlled trials are need to determine a causal effect.

In this paper, our aim is to investigate the region stability of stochastic discrete time-delay systems. Firstly, region stabilities of systems are defined by a spectrum operator. Secondly, with the aid of linear matrix inequality, some equivalent conditions and related results for region stabilities of systems are obtained. Finally, the relation between region stabilities and the convergence speed of the trajectories of systems is given.

Background Several studies have indicated that inflammatory markers were associated with the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Serum folate was related to MCI as well as inflammation. However, no studies have investigated the association between inflammatory markers and MCI taking account of serum folate level in T2D patients. This study aimed to conduct a case-control study to evaluate the association between inflammatory markers and MCI taking account of serum folate level in Chinese patients with T2D. Methods This study consisted of 126 T2D patients (63 cases with MCI and 63 controls without MCI). Clinical parameters, serum folate, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured. Spearman correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the association between the inflammatory markers and the risk of MCI in T2D patients.
