Search

CIZA J1358.9−4750 is a nearby galaxy cluster in the early phase of a major merger. The two-dimensional temperature map using XMM-Newton EPIC-PN observation confirms the existence of a high-temperature region, which we call the “hot region,” in the “bridge region” connecting the two clusters. The ∼500 kpc wide region between the south-east and north-west boundaries also has higher pseudo-pressure compared to the unshocked regions, suggesting the existence of two shocks. The southern shock front is clearly visible in the X-ray surface brightness image and has already been reported by Kato et al. (2015, PASJ, 67, 71). The northern one, on the other hand, is newly discovered. To evaluate their Mach number, we constructed a three-dimensional toy merger model with overlapping shocked and unshocked components in the line of sight. The unshocked and pre-shock intracluster medium (ICM) conditions are estimated based on those outside the interacting bridge region, assuming point symmetry. The hot-region spectra are modeled with two-temperature thermal components, assuming that the shocked condition follows the Rankin–Hugoniot relation with the pre-shock condition. As a result, the shocked region is estimated to have a line-of-sight depth of ∼1 Mpc with a Mach number of ∼1.3 in the south-east shock and ∼1.7 in the north-west shock. The age of the shock waves is estimated to be ∼260 Myr. This three-dimensional merger model is consistent with the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich signal obtained using the Planck observation within the cosmic microwave background fluctuations. The total flow of the kinetic energy of the ICM through the south-east shock was estimated to be ∼2.2 × 1042 erg s−1. Assuming that $10\%$ of this energy is converted into ICM turbulence, the line–of–sight velocity dispersion is calculated to be ∼200 km s−1, which is basically resolvable via upcoming high spectral resolution observations.

Solar cells are a promising optoelectronic device for the simultaneous solution of energy-resource and environmental problems. However, their high cost and slow, laborious production process so far severely hinder a sufficient widespread of clean, renewable photovoltaic energy as a major alternative electricity generator. This undesirable situation is mainly attributed to the fact that photovoltaic devices have been manufactured through a series of vacuum and high-temperature processes. Here we realize a PEDOT:PSS/Si heterojunction solar cell fabricated only in ambient and room-temperature conditions from a plain Si wafer, with an over-10% energy conversion efficiency. Our production scheme is based on our finding that PEDOT:PSS photovoltaic layers actively operate even on highly doped Si substrates, which substantially mitigates the condition requirements for electrode implementation. We report on results of our upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) observations for an early-stage merging galaxy cluster, CIZA J1358.9-4750 (CIZA1359), in Band-3 (300--500 MHz). We achieved the image dynamic range of $\sim 38,000$ using the direction dependent calibration and found a candidate of diffuse radio emission at 4~$\sigma_{rms}$ significance. The flux density of the candidate at 400~MHz, $24.04 \pm 2.48$~mJy, is significantly positive compared to noise, where its radio power, $2.40 \times 10^{24}$~W~Hz$^{-1}$, is consistent with those of typical diffuse radio sources of galaxy clusters. The candidate is associated with a part of the X-ray shock front at which the Mach number reaches its maximum value of $\mathcal{M}\sim 1.7$. The spectral index ($F_\nu \propto \nu^{\alpha}$) of the candidate, $\alpha = - 1.22 \pm 0.33$, is in agreement with an expected value derived from the standard diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) model. But such a low Mach number with a short acceleration time would require seed cosmic-rays supplied from active galactic nucleus (AGN) activities of member galaxies, as suggested in some other clusters. Indeed, we found seven AGN candidates inside the diffuse source candidate. Assuming the energy equipartition between magnetic fields and cosmic-rays, the magnetic field strength of the candidate was estimated to be $2.1~\mu$G. In this multi-messenger astronomy era, all the observational probes are improving their sensitivities and overall performance. The Focusing on Relativistic universe and Cosmic Evolution (FORCE) mission, the product of a JAXA/NASA collaboration, will reach a 10 times higher sensitivity in the hard X-ray band ($E >$ 10~keV) in comparison with any previous hard X-ray missions, and provide simultaneous soft X-ray coverage. FORCE aims to be launched in the early 2030s, providing a perfect hard X-ray complement to the ESA flagship mission Athena. FORCE will be the most powerful X-ray probe for discovering obscured/hidden black holes and studying high energy particle acceleration in our Universe and will address how relativistic processes in the universe are realized and how these affect cosmic evolution. FORCE, which will operate over 1--79 keV, is equipped with two identical pairs of supermirrors and wideband X-ray imagers. The mirror and imager are connected by a high mechanical stiffness extensible optical bench with alignment monitor systems with a focal length of 12~m. Fluidic self-assembly is a versatile on-chip integration method. In this scheme, a large number of semiconductor microchips are spontaneously deposited onto a host chip. The host chip typically comprises a Si substrate with an array of pockets at the designated microchip placement sites. In this study, we installed an SiO2 layer on the terrace region between the pockets of the host chip, to reduce the attraction with the Si microchips. By the SiO2-topped terrace scheme, we demonstrated a significant enhancement in the deposition selectivity of the Si microchips to the pocket sites, relative to the case of the conventional Si-only host chip. We theoretically explained the deposition selectivity enhancement in terms of the van der Waals interaction. Furthermore, our quantitative analysis implicated a potential applicability of the commonly used interlayer dielectrics, such as HfO2, silsesquioxanes, and allyl ethers, directly as the terrace component.

In this paper, we investigated the Fe K-shell lines in the supernova remnant W51C and hard X-ray sources in the proximity. We measured the intensities of Fe I K$\alpha$ and Fe XXV He$\alpha$ lines at 6.40 keV and 6.68 keV, respectively, and found that the intensity of the 6.68 keV line is consistent with the background level expected from previous studies, while that of the 6.40 keV line is higher at the significance level of 2.0${\sigma}$. Given the presence of gamma-ray emission and high ionization rate point spatially coincident with the remnant, we conclude that the enhanced 6.40 keV line most likely originates from the interaction between low-energy cosmic rays and molecular clouds. Also, we discovered an enhanced 6.68 keV line emission from the compact H II region G49.0-0.3 at the significance level of 3.4${\sigma}$. Spectral analysis revealed that the temperature and abundance of the thermal plasma with the 6.68 keV line is $kT = 3.0^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ keV and $Z = 0.5 \pm 0.2$ solar, respectively. The Fermi bubbles are large gamma-ray-emitting structures. They are symmetric about the Galactic Centre (GC), and their creation is therefore attributed to intensive energy injection at the GC. In this study, we focus on the non-equilibrium X-ray gas structures associated with the bubbles. We show that a combination of the density, temperature, and shock age profiles of the X-ray gas can be used to distinguish the energy-injection mechanisms. By comparing the results of numerical simulations with observations, we indicate that the bubbles were created by a fast wind from the GC because it generates a strong reverse shock and reproduces the observed temperature peak there. On the other hand, instantaneous energy injection at the GC cannot reproduce the temperature profile. The wind had a speed of ${\sim} 1000\rm \: km\: s^{-1}$, and blew for ∼107 yr. Because the mass flux of the wind is large, the entrainment of interstellar gas by wide-angle outflows from the black hole is required. Thus, the wind may be the same as active galactic nuclei outflows often observed in other galaxies and thought to regulate the growth of galaxies and their central black holes.

Background Near-falls should be detected to prevent falls related to the earlier ambulation after Total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The quadriceps weakness with femoral nerve block (FNB) has led to a focus on adductor canal block (ACB). We purposed to examine the risk of falls and the earlier ambulation in each continuous infusion nerve block. Methods Continuous infusion nerve block (FNB or ACB) was performed until postoperative day (POD) 2 or 3. Pain levels and falls/near-falls with knee-buckling were monitored from POD 1 to POD 3. The score on the manual muscle test, MMT (0 to 5, 5 being normal), of the patients who could ambulate on POD 1, was investigated. Results A total of 73 TKA cases, 36 FNB and 37 ACB, met the inclusion criteria. No falls were noted. But episodes of near-falls with knee-buckling were witnessed in 14 (39%) cases in the FNB group and in 4 (11%) in the ACB group (p = 0.0068). In the ACB group, 81.1% of patients could ambulate with parallel bars on POD 1, while only 44.4% of FNB patients could do so (p = 0.0019). The quadriceps MMT values in the ACB group was 2.82, significantly higher than 1.97 in the FNB group (p = 0.0035). There were no significant differences in pain as measured with a numerical rating scale (NRS) and rescue analgesia through POD 3. Conclusion ACB was associated with significantly less knee-buckling and earlier ambulation post-TKA, with better quadriceps strength. Our study indicated the incidence of falls and near-falls with continuous infusion nerve blocks, and support the use of ACB to reduce the risk of falls after TKA. It is suggested that a certain number of the patients even with continuous ACB infusion should be considered with the effect of motor branch to prevent falls.

Fluid self-assembly is one of the promising methods for bonding and integrating micron-order optoelectronic devices on semiconductor chips. In this study, we investigated the fluid self-assembly process using an unprecedented Si thin film and quantitatively evaluated the selectivity in integration by introducing a thermal oxide film. In the thin film separation process, good separation performance from the substrate was achieved by performing SiO 2 layer etching while applying ultrasonic vibration, and the selectivity in integration could be improved by introducing a thermal oxide film to the receiver substrate.

Precise measurement of the survival probability ${P}_{ee}$ of solar electron neutrino (${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$) as a function of its energy [${P}_{ee}({E}_{\ensuremath{\nu}e})$] is one of the key issues in neutrino physics. Current ${P}_{ee}$ data, due to their limited accuracy, still allow for nonstandard interactions (NSIs) to be alternatives to the standard one, which is based on the MSW-LMA prediction. In order to determine ${P}_{ee}$ values at several values of ${E}_{\ensuremath{\nu}e}$ with higher accuracy, we propose to use several target nuclei with different threshold energies for ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ detection. We examined charged-current (CC) responses of various nuclei seeking the ones: (a) having large and concentrated Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strength in the low excitation-energy region, and (b) having appropriate and a variety of reaction $Q$ values, i.e., $\ensuremath{\approx}1$ to 17 MeV, in the (${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e},{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) reaction. As a result, we found that systematic solar ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ measurements with target nuclei $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{18}\mathrm{O}$, $^{19}\mathrm{F}$, and $^{42}\mathrm{Ca}$ can put strong constraints on the ${P}_{ee}({E}_{\ensuremath{\nu}e})$ curve and thus on these NSI models. In addition, we notice that three of these nuclei, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$, and $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, have large and concentrated neutral-current (NC) responses with detection threshold-energies of 3.56, 0.48, and 15.11 MeV, respectively. Note that the NC measurement is flavor independent. Thus, the measured results should represent the original strength of ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ from the Sun.

Massive molecular gas has been discovered in giant elliptical galaxies at the centers of galaxy clusters. To reveal its role in active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback in those galaxies, we construct a semianalytical model of gas circulation. This model especially focuses on the massive molecular gas (interstellar cold gas on a scale of ~ 10 kpc) and the circumnuclear disk (~< 0.5 kpc). We consider the destruction of the interstellar cold gas by star formation and the gravitational instability for the circumnuclear disk. Our model can reproduce the basic properties of the interstellar cold gas and the circumnuclear disk, such as their masses. We also find that the circumnuclear disk tends to stay at the boundary between stable and unstable states. This works as an 'adjusting valve' that regulates mass accretion toward the supermassive black hole. On the other hand, the interstellar cold gas serves as a 'fuel tank' in the AGN feedback. Even if the cooling of the galactic hot gas is prevented, the interstellar cold gas can sustain the AGN activity for ~> 0.5 Gyr. We also confirm that the small entropy of the hot gas (~< 30 keV cm^2) or the short cooling time (~< 1 Gyr) is a critical condition for the existence of the massive amounts of molecular gas in the galaxy. The dissipation time of the interstellar cold gas may be related to the critical cooling time. We report a discovery of diffuse X-ray emission around the supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7, which is associated with VER J2227+608 and HAWC J2227+610 and is known as a candidate for a PeV cosmic ray accelerator (PeVatron). We analyze observational data of Suzaku around the SNR and the adjacent pulsar PSR J2229+6114. We find diffuse X-ray emission that is represented by either thermal or non-thermal one. However, the metal abundance for the thermal emission is, matched the published version

We are studying an improved DIOS (Diffuse Intergalactic Oxygen Surveyor) program, Super DIOS, which is accepted for establishing the Research Group in ISAS/JAXA, for a launch year after 2030. The aim of Super DIOS is an X-ray quantitative exploration of ”dark baryon” over several scales from circumgalactic medium, cluster outskirt to warm-hot intergalactic medium along the Cosmic web with mapping redshifted emission lines from mainly oxygen and other ions. These observations play key roles for investigating the physical condition, such as the energy flow and metal circulation, of most baryons in the Universe. This mission will perform wide field X-ray spectroscopy with a field of view of about 0.5–1 degree and energy resolution of a few eV with TES microcalorimeter, but with much improved angular resolution of about 10–15 arcseconds. We will also consider including a small gamma-ray burst monitor and a fast repointing system. We will have an international collaboration with US and Europe for all the onboard instruments.

We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the gamma-ray binary system containing the pulsar PSR B1259-63 orbiting around a massive star LS 2883 in an inactive period between the 2017 and 2021 periastron passages. We detected radio continuum emission from the binary system at 97 GHz (Band 3) and 343 GHz (Band 7). Compared with our previous ALMA observations performed soon after the 2017 periastron passage, the fluxes have decreased by an factor of six at 97 GHz and two at 343 GHz. The flux at 343 GHz is large relative to that at 97 GHz and appears to be thermal emission from the circumstellar disk around LS 2883. The decrease of the 343 GHz flux may indicate that the disk has expanded and become partially optically-thin since the disk is no longer affected by pulsar winds. The flux at 97 GHz is consistent with that expected from the pulsed emission from the pulsar, which indicates that the unpulsed emission that had been produced through pulsar-disk or pulsar-stellar wind interaction has disappeared. The X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) is the successor to the 2016 Hitomi mission that ended prematurely. Like Hitomi, the primary science goals are to examine astrophysical problems with precise highresolution X-ray spectroscopy. XRISM promises to discover new horizons in X-ray astronomy. XRISM carries a 6 x 6 pixelized X-ray micro-calorimeter on the focal plane of an X-ray mirror assembly and a co-aligned X-ray CCD camera that covers the same energy band over a large field of view. XRISM utilizes Hitomi heritage, but all designs were reviewed. The attitude and orbit control system were improved in hardware and software. The number of star sensors were increased from two to three to improve coverage and robustness in onboard attitude determination and to obtain a wider field of view sun sensor. The fault detection, isolation, and reconfiguration (FDIR) system was carefully examined and reconfigured. Together with a planned increase of ground support stations, the survivability of the spacecraft is significantly improved.

Scaling relations trace the formation and evolution of galaxy clusters. We exploited multi-wavelength surveys -- the XXL survey at \emph{XMM-Newton} in the X-ray band, and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program for optical weak lensing -- to study an X-ray selected, complete sample of clusters and groups. The scalings of gas mass, temperature, and soft-band X-ray luminosity with the weak lensing mass show imprints of radiative cooling and AGN feedback in groups. From the multi-variate analysis, we found some evidence for steeper than self-similar slopes for gas mass ($\beta_{m_\text{g}|m}=1.73 \pm0.80$) and luminosity ($\beta_{l|m}=1.91\pm0.94$) and a nearly self-similar slope for the temperature ($\beta_{t|m}=0.78\pm0.43$). Intrinsic scatters of X-ray properties appear to be positively correlated at a fixed mass (median correlation factor $\rho_{X_1X_2|m}\sim0.34$) due to dynamical state and merger history of the halos. Positive correlations with the weak lensing mass (median correlation factor $\rho_{m_\text{wl}X|m}\sim0.35$) can be connected to triaxiality and orientation. Comparison of weak lensing and hydrostatic masses suggests a small role played by non-thermal pressure support ($9\pm17\%$)., Comment: 19 pages; in press on MNRAS. Low-energy (∼ MeV) cosmic rays (CRs) ionize molecular clouds and create the neutral iron line (Fe i Kα) at 6.4 keV. On the other hand, high-energy (≳GeV) CRs interact with the dense cloud gas and produce gamma rays. Based on a one-dimensional model, we study the spatial correlation among ionization rates of gas, 6.4 keV line fluxes, and gamma-ray emissions from a molecular cloud illuminated by CRs accelerated at an adjacent supernova remnant. We find that the spatial distributions of these three observables depend on how CRs intrude the cloud and on the internal structure of the cloud. If the intrusion is represented by slow diffusion, the 6.4 keV line should be detected around the cloud edge where ionization rates are high. On the other hand, if CRs freely stream in the cloud, the 6.4 keV line should be observed where gamma rays are emitted. In the former, the cooling time of the CRs responsible for the 6.4 keV line is shorter than their cloud crossing time, and it is opposite in the latter. Although we compare the results with observations, we cannot conclude whether the diffusion or the free-streaming is dominantly realized. Our predictions can be checked in more detail with future X-ray missions such as XRISM and Athena and by observations of ionization rates that cover wider fields.

The present study analyzed the high school students’ collaboration processes of producing university entaranceexamination. Three groups of 3 to 4 members (in total 11 students) participated at the extra lesson of learning “howto make university entrance examination question from the view point of examination designer” by focusing on theprotagonist’s emotional changes according to the relation with several characters or narrative context depicted inthe short story written by S.Fujisawa. The results showed that deliberative argument or discussion are difficult forhigh school students in terms of three kinds of accountabilities of community, reasoning standard, and knowledge(Resnik, et al.,2010). However, several findings suggested that good teacher’s reflective intervention and good taskworth learning could promote their learning through collaborative productions.

We report the detection of a new feature at the centre of NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster, hosting the radio source 3C 84. This feature emerges ~ 2 mas (~ 0.8 pc) north of the central core in recent 15 and 43 GHz VLBA images, and seems to be the counterjet to a known radio jet expanding to the south of the core. Apparently, the two jets were born through an outburst around 2005. From the ratio of the apparent lengths of the two jets from the core, we found that the jet angle to the line of sight is \theta=65^\circ\pm 16^\circ, which is not much different from the angle of the outer jets generated by an activity around 1959 and constrains theories on gamma-ray emission from jets. The new northern jet has a strongly inverted spectrum in contrast with the southern jet. This suggests that the central black hole is surrounded by a subparsec-scale accretion disk with the density of >~ 10^5 cm^-3. The brightness of the counterjet suggests that the disk is highly inhomogeneous. The ambient gas density in the direction of the jet is ~ 8 cm^-3 if the current jet activity is similar to the past average.

In this study, we show that the characteristic radius rs, mass Ms, and the X-ray temperature, TX, of galaxy clusters form a thin plane in the space of (log rs, log Ms, log TX). This tight correlation indicates that the cluster structure including the temperature is affected by the formation time of individual clusters. Numerical simulations show that clusters move along the fundamental plane as they evolve. The plane and the cluster evolution within the plane can be explained by a similarity solution of structure formation. The angle of the plane shows that clusters have not achieved “virial equilibrium”. The details of this study are written in Fujita et al. (2018a,b).

The use of twin-scroll turbocharger turbine in automotive powertrain has been known for providing better transient performance over conventional single-scroll turbine. This has been accredited to the preservation of exhaust flow energy in the twin-scroll volute. In the current study, the performance comparison between a single and twin-scroll turbine has been made experimentally on a 1.5L passenger car gasoline engine. The uniqueness of the current study is that nearly identical engine hardware has been used for both the single and twin-scroll turbine volutes. This includes the intake and exhaust manifold geometry, turbocharger compressor, turbine rotor and volute scroll A/R variation trend over circumferential location. On top of that, the steady-state engine performance with both the volutes, has also been tuned to have matching brake torque. Such highly comparable setup enabled a more precise evaluation on the effect of pulse-isolation in the twin-scroll turbine volute during transient process. The steady-state performance comparison shows the amplitude of exhaust pulse in the twin-scroll volute is substantially higher than in the single-scroll volute, hence confirming the preservation of pulse exhaust energy. As a result, twin-scroll volute is found to be able to accelerate the engine boost pressure at a faster rate, therefore results in better transient response. The ultimate advantage of the twin-scroll turbine is further exemplified via engine Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) testing, where approximately 2.7% of averaged reduction in fuel consumption has been recorded. Majority of this improvement has been contributed by low to medium speed driving condition.

Recent discovery of the X-ray neutral iron line (Fe I K\alpha at 6.40 keV) around several supernova remnants (SNRs) show that MeV cosmic-ray (CR) protons are distributed around the SNRs and are interacting with neutral gas there. We propose that these MeV CRs are the ones that have been accelerated at the SNRs together with GeV-TeV CRs. In our analytical model, the MeV CRs are still confined in the SNR when the SNR collides with molecular clouds. After the collision, the MeV CRs leak into the clouds and produce the neutral iron line emissions. On the other hand, GeV-TeV CRs had already escaped from the SNRs and emit gamma-rays through interaction with molecular clouds surrounding the SNRs. We apply this model to the SNRs W28 and W44 and show that it can reproduce the observations of the iron line intensities and the gamma-ray spectra. This can be another support of a hadronic scenario for the gamma-ray emissions from these SNRs., Comment: Matches the version published on PASJ

Recent cosmological simulations have shown that turbulence should be generally prevailing in clusters because clusters are continuously growing through matter accretion. Using one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we study the heating of cool-core clusters by the ubiquitous turbulence as well as feedback from the central active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for a wide range of cluster and turbulence parameters, focusing on the global stability of the core. We find that the AGN shows intermittent activities in the presence of moderate turbulence similar to the one observed with Hitomi. The cluster core maintains a quasi-equilibrium state for most of the time because the heating through turbulent diffusion is nearly balanced with radiative cooling. The balance is gradually lost because of slight dominance of the radiative cooling, and the AGN is ignited by increased gas inflow. Finally, when the AGN bursts, the core is heated almost instantaneously. Thanks to the pre-existing turbulence, the heated gas is distributed throughout the core without becoming globally unstable and causing catastrophic cooling, and the core recovers the quasi-equilibrium state. The AGN bursts can be stronger in lower mass clusters. Predictions of our model can be easily checked with future X-ray missions like XRISM and Athena.

We report a discovery of bright blob-like enhancements of an Fe I K$\alpha$ line in the northwest and the middle of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443. The distribution of the line emission is associated with molecular clouds interacting with the shock front, and is totally different from that of the plasma. The Fe I K$\alpha$ line has a large equivalent width. The most plausible scenario for the origin of the line emission is that the MeV protons accelerated in the shell leak into the molecular clouds and ionize the Fe atoms therein. According to the standard cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology, the structure of dark halos including those of galaxy clusters reflects their mass accretion history. Older clusters tend to be more concentrated than younger clusters. Their structure, represented by the characteristic radius $r_s$ and mass $M_s$ of the Navarro--Frenk--White (NFW) density profile, is related to their formation time. In~this study, we showed that $r_s$, $M_s$, and the X-ray temperature of the intracluster medium (ICM), $T_X$, form a thin plane in the space of $(\log r_s, \log M_s, \log T_X)$. This tight correlation indicates that the ICM temperature is also determined by the formation time of individual clusters. Numerical simulations showed that clusters move along the fundamental plane as they evolve. The plane and the cluster evolution within the plane could be explained by a similarity solution of structure formation of the universe. The angle of the plane shows that clusters have not achieved "virial equilibrium" in the sense that mass/size growth and pressure at the boundaries cannot be ignored. The distribution of clusters on the plane was related to the intrinsic scatter in the halo concentration--mass relation, which originated from the variety of cluster ages. The well-known mass--temperature relation of clusters ($M_\Delta\propto T_X^{3/2}$) can be explained by the fundamental plane and the mass dependence of the halo concentration without the assumption of virial equilibrium. We present ALMA Band 6 observations of the CO(2-1), HCN(3-2), and HCO$^{+}$(3-2) lines in the nearby radio galaxy / brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of NGC 1275 with the spatial resolution of $\sim20$ pc. In the previous observations, CO(2-1) emission was detected as radial filaments lying in the east-west direction. We resolved the inner filament and found that the filament cannot be represented by a simple infalling stream both morphologically and kinematically. The observed complex nature of the filament resembles the cold gas structure predicted by recent numerical simulations of cold chaotic accretion. A crude estimate suggests that the accretion rate of the cold gas can be higher than that of hot gas. Within the central 100 pc, we detected a rotational disk of the molecular gas whose mass is $\sim10^{8} M_{\sun}$. This is the first evidence of the presence of massive cold gas disk on this spatial scale for BCGs. The disk rotation axis is approximately consistent with the axis of the radio jet on subpc scales. This probably suggests that the cold gas disk is physically connected to the innermost accretion disk which is responsible for jet launching. We also detected absorption features in the HCN(3-2) and HCO$^{+}$(3-2) spectra against the radio continuum emission mostly radiated by $\sim1.2$-pc size jet. The absorption features are blue-shifted from the systemic velocity by $\sim$300-600~km~s$^{-1}$, which suggests the presence of outflowing gas from the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the binary system containing the pulsar PSR B1259-63 orbiting around a Be star LS 2883 after the 2017 periastron passage. We detected radio continuum emission from the binary system in the millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths for the first time. At Band 3 (97 GHz), the flux 84 days after the periastron is almost the same as that 71 days after the periastron. Although the binary system showed intense GeV gamma-ray flares during our observations, the Band 3 flux did not indicate any time correlation with them. The Band 3 fluxes are consistent with an extrapolation of the radio spectrum at lower frequencies. Assuming that it is synchrotron emission, we constrain magnetic fields ($\lesssim 0.6$ G) and the high-energy cutoff of the electrons ($\gamma \gtrsim 360$). The flux at Band 7 (343 GHz) 69 days after the periastron shows a significant excess from the extrapolation of the radio spectrum at lower frequencies. The flux may be associated with the circumstellar disk around the Be star. We also present the results of Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations at 94 GHz for the 2014 periastron passage, which show that the radio spectrum was relatively soft when the pulsar passed the disk., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ Letter

It has been indicated that low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) are accelerating high-energy cosmic-ray (CR) protons in their radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs). If this is the case, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) should also be generating CR protons, because Sgr A* is a LLAGN. Based on this scenario, we calculate a production rate of CR protons in Sgr A* and their diffusion in the central molecular zone (CMZ) around Sgr A*. The CR protons diffusing in the CMZ create gamma-rays through pp interaction. We analyse the environment of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the centre of a massive elliptical galaxy NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster, hosting the radio source 3C 84. We focus on the young radio lobe observed inside the estimated Bondi accretion radius. We discuss the momentum balance between the jet associated with the lobe and the surrounding gas. The results are compared with the proper motion of the radio lobe obtained with the very long baseline interferometry. We find that under assumption of a high-density environment >~ 100 cm^-3), the jet power must be comparable to the Eddington luminosity --- this is clearly inconsistent with the current moderate activity of 3C 84, which indicates instead that the jet is expanding in a very low density region (, Comment: Replaced with published version

The spectral slope of the magnetic energy in supernova remnants (SNRs) can be obtained by analysis of spatial two-point correlation functions of synchrotron intensities. This method has been originally developed for the analysis of magnetic field structure in diffuse interstellar medium and applied when the geometry of the emission region is simple and known. In this paper, applying this correlation analysis to Tycho's SNR, for which the synchrotron emission region is known to be a spherical shell, we find that the magnetic energy spectrum shows the Kolmogorov-like scaling. Our results can be explained by turbulence developed downstream of the shock front via Richtmyer-Meshkov instability or an amplification of upstream magnetic field induced by cosmic rays. The ASTRO-H mission was designed and developed through an international collaboration of JAXA, NASA, ESA, and the CSA. It was successfully launched on February 17, 2016, and then named Hitomi. During the in-orbit verification phase, the on-board observational instruments functioned as expected. The intricate coolant and refrigeration systems for soft X-ray spectrometer (SXS, a quantum micro-calorimeter) and soft X-ray imager (SXI, an X-ray CCD) also functioned as expected. However, on March 26, 2016, operations were prematurely terminated by a series of abnormal events and mishaps triggered by the attitude control system. These errors led to a fatal event: the loss of the solar panels on the Hitomi mission. The X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (or, XARM) is proposed to regain the key scientific advances anticipated by the international collaboration behind Hitomi. XARM will recover this science in the shortest time possible by focusing on one of the main science goals of Hitomi,“Resolving astrophysical problems by precise high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy”.1 This decision was reached after evaluating the performance of the instruments aboard Hitomi and the mission’s initial scientific results, and considering the landscape of planned international X-ray astrophysics missions in 2020’s and 2030’s. Hitomi opened the door to high-resolution spectroscopy in the X-ray universe. It revealed a number of discrepancies between new observational results and prior theoretical predictions. Yet, the resolution pioneered by Hitomi is also the key to answering these and other fundamental questions. The high spectral resolution realized by XARM will not offer mere refinements; rather, it will enable qualitative leaps in astrophysics and plasma physics. XARM has therefore been given a broad scientific charge: “Revealing material circulation and energy transfer in cosmic plasmas and elucidating evolution of cosmic structures and objects”. To fulfill this charge, four categories of science objectives that were defined for Hitomi will also be pursued by XARM; these include (1) Structure formation of the Universe and evolution of clusters of galaxies; (2) Circulation history of baryonic matters in the Universe; (3) Transport and circulation of energy in the Universe; (4) New science with unprecedented high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. In order to achieve these scientific objectives, XARM will carry a 6 × 6 pixelized X-ray micro-calorimeter on the focal plane of an X-ray mirror assembly, and an aligned X-ray CCD camera covering the same energy band and a wider field of view. This paper introduces the science objectives, mission concept, and observing plan of XARM.

Observations and numerical simulations have shown that the relation between the mass scaled with the critical density of the universe and the X-ray temperature of galaxy clusters is approximately represented by $M_\Delta \propto T_X^{3/2}$ (e.g. $\Delta=500$). This relation is often interpreted as evidence that clusters are in virial equilibrium. However, the recently discovered fundamental plane (FP) of clusters indicates that the temperature of clusters primarily depends on a combination of the characteristic mass $M_s$ and radius $r_s$ of the Navarro-Frenk-White profile rather than $M_\Delta$. Moreover, the angle of the FP revealed that clusters are not in virial equilibrium because of continuous mass accretion from the surrounding matter. By considering both the FP and the mass dependence of the cluster concentration parameter, we show that this paradox can be solved and the relation $M_\Delta \propto T_X^{3/2}$ actually reflects the central structure of clusters. We also find that the intrinsic scatter in the halo concentration-mass relation can largely account for the spread of clusters on the FP. We also show that X-ray data alone form the FP and the angle and the position are consistent with those of the FP constructed from gravitational lensing data. Magnetic field is ubiquitous in the Universe and it plays essential roles in various astrophysical phenomena, yet its real origin and evolution are poorly known. This article reviews current understanding of magnetic fields in the interstellar medium, the Milky Way Galaxy, external galaxies, active galactic nuclei, clusters of galaxies, and the cosmic web. Particularly, the review concentrates on the achievements that have been provided by centimeter and meter wavelength radio observations. The article also introduces various methods to analyze linear polarization data, including synchrotron radiation, Faraday rotation, depolarization, and Faraday tomography., 40 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The use of N fertilizers for agricultural production acts as a sources of atmospheric $$\hbox {N}_2\hbox {O}$$ . Fertilizer induced $$\hbox {N}_2\hbox {O}$$ emission considerably varies in accordance with environmental factors. We conducted a $$\hbox {N}_2\hbox {O}$$ flux measurement campaign across 10 different experimental sites with various soil types throughout Japan and investigated the fertilizer induced $$\hbox {N}_2\hbox {O}$$ emission factors (FIEFs) of synthetic fertilizers (mainly urea) in multiple growing periods at each experimental site. FIEFs considerably varied among the 10 sites, and measurement periods ranged from 0.00 to 7.13 % in 40 total observations. Soil profile information divided the experimental sites into two major groups through cluster analysis, which are volcanic or non-volcanic soils. According to this classification, FIEFs were clearly differentiated into high and low FIEF groups (mean values: 2.67 and 0.59 %, respectively). Regression trees selected total soil carbon, the depth to the Fe mottling horizon, and mean air temperature as the key parameters to determine the strength of FIEFs out of 10 explanatory variables (e.g., N fertilizer application rates, fertilizer application times, clay content, total precipitation during measurement periods, pH, total soil carbon, and total soil nitrogen). The existence of shallow Fe mottling layer (up to 42.5 cm) induced high FIEFs in this model, suggesting that upward $$\hbox {N}_2\hbox {O}$$ emissions derived from the intermediate Fe mottling layers presumably contributed high $$\hbox {N}_2\hbox {O}$$ emissions in such soils. Our results suggest that the soil profile information associated with the water regime is an important index for synthetic fertilizer induced $$\hbox {N}_2\hbox {O}$$ emissions.
