Abstract

Recent years have witnessed an enormous development in photoinduced systems, opening up possibilities for advancements in industry and academia in terms of green chemistry providing environmentally friendly conditions and spatiotemporal control over the reaction medium. A vast number of research have been conducted on photoinduced systems focusing on the development of new polymerization methods, although scarcely investigated, depolymerization of the synthesized polymers by photochemical means is also possible. Herein, we provide a comprehensive study of visible light induced dimanganese decacarbonyl (Mn2(CO)10) assisted depolymerization system for poly(methyl methacrylate) with chlorine chain end prepared by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization. Contrary to the conventional procedures demanding high temperatures, the approach offers ambient temperature for the photodepolymerization process. This novel light-controlled concept is easily adaptable to macroscales and expected to promote further research in the fields matching with the environmental concerns.

Abstract

A novel thioxanthone-anthracene (TX-A) photoinitiator possessing an octyl group, TX-A-Oct, as amphipathic photoinitiator was synthesized by click chemistry. Its ability to initiate photopolymerization of various monomers, namely methyl methacrylate (MMA), acryl amide (Am), butyl acrylate (BA), styrene (St), and a multifunctional monomer trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), was examined in both the presence and absence of air. TX-A-Oct was found to be effective in initiating polymerization also in the absence of a co-initiator. UV, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopic analysis and polymerization studies revealed that depending on the conditions photoinitiations occur through both anthracene and thioxanthone chromophoric groups by hydrogen abstraction and endoperoxide formation processes, respectively.

Abstract

Photoinitiated free radical polymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA), (Nisopropylcarbamate) ethylpropenoate (CL-960) and tripropyleneglycol diacrylate (TPGDA) by using polysilanes in the presence of N-ethoxy-2 methyl pyridinium hexafluorophosphate (EMP+ PF6) and diphenyliodonium hexaflurophosphate (Ph2l+ PF6) was studied. In the presence of the cationic salts the rate of photopolymerization was significantly increased The effect was attributed to the oxidation of silyl radicals formed from the photoscission of polysilane by pyridinium or diphenliodonium salts. The resulting radicals species are more capable of initiating the radical polymerization.

Abstract

The development of long-wavelength photoinduced copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne click (CuAAC) reaction routes is attractive for organic and polymer chemistry. In this study, we present a novel synthetic methodology for the photoinduced CuAAC reaction utilizing exfoliated two-dimensional (2D) few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) as photocatalysts under white LED and near-IR (NIR) light irradiation. Upon irradiation, BPNs generated excited electrons and holes on its conduction (CB) and valence band (VB), respectively. The excited electrons thus formed were then transferred to the CuII ions to produce active CuI catalysts. The ability of BPNs to initiate the CuAAC reaction was investigated by studying the reaction between various low molar mass alkyne and azide derivatives under both white LED and NIR light irradiation. Due to its deeper penetration of NIR light, the possibility of synthesizing different macromolecular structures such as functional polymers, cross-linked networks and block copolymer has also been demonstrated. The structural and molecular properties of the intermediates and final products were evaluated by spectral and chromatographic analyses.

Abstract

Control over macromolecular architecture and resulting material properties has been a central goal of polymer chemistry. There has been much interest in developing new synthetic routes to prepare smart materials with novel compositions and topologies for various applications. The considerable progress in the metal mediated macromolecular engineering over the past decade has had a major impact on the development of well-defined macromolecular architectures and the synthesis of smart materials. Particularly, remarkable strong developments have been observed for the synthesis of smart materials via four metal mediated macromolecular engineering techniques; Anionic, ROMP, ATRP and Click Chemistry. These materials have found uses in advanced microelectronics, technical and biomedical applications as well as in chemical sensors applications. This book is comprised of 27 chapters written by leading scientists from NATO and Partner Countries who have greatly contributed in the area of Anionic, ROMP, ATRP and Click Chemistry. Abstract

Photochemical techniques have recently been revitalized as they can readily be adapted to different polymerization modes to yield a wide range of complex macromolecular structures. However, the implementation of the photoinduced cationic methods in the polymerization of cyclic siloxane monomers has scarcely been investigated. Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) is an important monomer for the synthesis of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and its copolymers. In this study, the cationic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of D4, initiated by diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPI), has been studied. Both direct and indirect initiating systems acting at broad wavelength using benzophenone and pyrene were investigated. In both systems, photochemically generated protonic acids and silylium cations are responsible for the polymerization. The kinetics of the polymerization are followed by viscosimetry and GPC analyses. The reported approach may overcome the problems associated with conventional methods and therefore represents industrial importance for the fabrication of polysiloxanes.

Abstract

Photoactive N‐alkoxy 4‐phenyl pyridinium and N‐alkoxy isoquinolinium ion terminated polystyrenes with hexafluoroantimonate counter anion were prepared and characterized. For this purpose, mono‐ and dibrominated polystyrenes were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction of these polymers with silver hexafluoroantimonate in the presence of 4‐phenylpyridine N‐oxide and isoquinoline N‐oxide in dichloromethane produced desired polymeric salts with the corresponding functionalities. Irradiation of these photoactive polystyrenes produced alkoxy radicals at chain ends capable of initiating free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). This way, depending on the number of functionality, AB or ABA type block copolymers were formed which were characterized with the aid of gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Abstract In this work, a recycling and self-healing strategy for polybenzoxazines through both S–S bond cleavage-reformation reaction and supramolecular attractions is described. Both recyclable and self-healable polybenzoxazines can be prepared from low cost chemicals with a simple procedure in only 30 minutes. For this purpose, inverse vulcanization of poly(propylene oxide)benzoxazine (PPOB) and diallybenzoxazine (B-al) with elemental sulfur was performed at 185 °C. The obtained cross-linked polymer films exhibited thermally driven recycling ability up to 5 cycles. Moreover, the self-healing ability of a test specimen was shown. Spectral characterizations, thermal stability and fracture toughness of the films were investigated after each recycling.

The UV-curable telechelic polysulfones with (meth)acrylate functionalities were synthesized by condensation polymerization and subsequent esterification. The final polymers and intermediates at various stages were characterized by 1H NMR, FT-ATR, and GPC. The oligomeric films prepared from the appropriate solutions containing these telechelics and 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA) as the photoinitiator undergo rapid polymerization upon irradiation forming insoluble networks. The photo-curing behavior was investigated by photo-DSC and the effects of the molecular weight of the polysulfone precursor and type of functionality on the rate of polymerization and conversion were evaluated. Thermal properties of the photochemically cured films were studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).
