Abstract

The effect of a nickel oxide supported silica oxide (NiO/SiO2) catalyst on temperature programmed reduction (TPR) with 40% (v/v) carbon monoxide (CO) in nitrogen atmosphere as reductant agent was investigated. The conventional impregnation method was used to create the NiO/SiO2 catalysts. The reduction characteristics of NiO to Ni were investigated up to 700 °C, followed by isothermal reduction. The TPR profile of 9% NiO/SiO2 slightly shifted to lower temperature from 412 to 392 °C. Whereas the undoped NiO was reduced at a lower temperature of 387 °C. XRD diffractogram of the catalysts showed a complete reduction of NiO to Ni and have different intensities for each different loading of NiO catalyst on SiO2 support. The TEM images indicated that the carbon nanotubes were deposited on the NiO surfaces indicating some chemical reactions occur on NiO. It was found that the addition of 3% of NiO on SiO2 also exhibited a larger BET surface area (532.8 m2g−1) and insignificant pore diameter (5.9-6.0 nm). Based on these results, it is interesting to note that the addition of a small amount of NiO to SiO2 has a remarkable influence by reducing the temperature in the reduction process. Abstract

The objective of the current study was to separate saturated fatty acids (SFAs) from high free fatty acid crude palm oil fatty acid mixture using the methanol crystallisation method. The development of methanol crystallisation method procedure was based on various parameters. The fatty acid composition was determined by using gas chromatography-flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) as Fatty Acid Methyl Esters. The highest percentage of SFAs was more than 89% with the percentage yield of 48.9% under the optimal conditions of the fatty acids-to-methanol ratio of 1:15 (w/v), the crystallisation temperature of −15 °C, and the crystallisation time of 24 hours, respectively. After a double crystallisation, the composition of separated SFAs contains 90% of palmitic acid (C16:0) as a major component and 5.8% of stearic acid (C18:0), respectively. Moreover, almost 4.2% of oleic acid (C18:1) was observed in the saturated solid product. Based on the results, the use of methanol as a crystallisation solvent is recommended because of its high efficiency, low cost, stability, obtainability, and comparative ease of recovery.

Abstract

The physicochemical properties of different grades of Malaysian crude palm oil (high free fatty acid crude palm oil (HFFA-CPO) and low free fatty acid crude palm oil (LFFA-CPO)) were analyzed in this study to determine their applicability as edible oils. The percentages of free fatty acids (FFAs%), iodine value, hydroxyl value, unsaponifiable value, moisture content for HFFA-CPO and LFFA-CPO were 8.7 ± 0.3 and 3.8 ± 0.1%; 53.1 ± 0.4 and 56 ± 0.3 g I2/100 g; 32.5 ± 0.6 and 18.5 ± 0.9 mg KOH/g oil; 0.31 ± 0.01 and 0.46 ± 0.02%; 0.31 ± 0.01 and 0.33 ± 0.01%, respectively. The fatty acid compositions were determined using a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The results showed that the dominant fatty acids are palmitic acid (43.2%–44.4%) and oleic acid (39.8%–41.4%). The major triacylglycerols (TAGs) of HFFA-CPO and LFFA-CPO estimated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), were POP (30.8%–33.6%) and POO (24.9%–29.7%). In general, the physicochemical properties of HFFA-CPO and LFFA-CPO are consistent with the standard Malaysian crude palm oil, with the exception of FFAs%, hydroxyl value, moisture contents.

Abstract

A series of ZnBr2 impregnated on rice husk ash silica catalysts were synthesised via the wet impregnation method for the CO2 cycloaddition to styrene oxide reaction. The X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicates that the impregnation resulted in the deterioration of the silica's pore channels. Catalyst with 0.5 w/w% of Zn (0.5 wt %ZnBr2‐SiO2) was highly active in the CO2 cycloaddition to styrene oxide. The conversion of styrene oxide (StO) was 89.1 %, with the styrene carbonate (SC) selectivity of 92.1 % under the optimum conditions (130 °C, 60 bar, 3 h and solventless). Additionally, the universality of 0.5 wt %ZnBr2‐SiO2 was also studied with other epoxides, and it shows good to excellent activity. The catalytic performance of the 0.5 wt %ZnBr2‐SiO2 remains constant after being reused three consecutive times. The activation energy of the reaction was determined to be 89.06 kJ/mol. Abstract

Bimetal adsorbent system of calcium oxide impregnated on iron (III) oxide were evaluated as a potential source of basic sites for CO2 capture. The adsorbents were prepared by impregnation method were calcined at 200 until 600 °C. Several characterizations were carried out using XRD, BET and CO2-TPD analysis. The CaO loading increased the basicity of the adsorbent significantly enhance the CO2 chemisorption. Furthermore, it drastically reduced the desorption temperature to 310-490 °C, which is important in chemisorption aspect. The CaO/Fe2O3200 which calcined at 200 °C was found to be most efficient. The CO2 chemisorption (81.29 mg CO2/g adsorbent) was contributed most compared to physisorption (4.64 mg CO2/g adsorbent).

Abstract

Recycling waste cooking palm oil (WCPO) as a source for alternative fuel such as biodiesel and valuable carbon materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) is a way to exploit it from waste to wealth. Carbon nanotubes cotton (CNTC) is one of the carbon nanostructures synthesized in high-temperature furnace. It resembles cotton candy, composed of low spatial density, ultra-long individual CNT, hydrophobic, oleophilic and exhibits good electrical and mechanical properties. CNTC from WCPO was synthesized using in-house chemical vapor deposition reactor. Ferrocene was used as catalyst with thiophene as a growth rate enhancer. The synthesis was carried out at temperature ranging from 1000 °C to 1200°C. The electrodeposition of ZnO was performed in a three electrode electrochemical cell with CNTC as the cathode. The result obtained showed that ZnO was successfully deposited on CNTC. The combination of ZnO and CNTC hybrid is a promising composite that can be further explored in the application of piezoelectric nanogenerator, sensors and high-performance electromagnetic absorbing material.

37. XRD Studies on Transformation of Dolomite under CO2 and N2 Atmosphere

Abstract

In this study, dolomite was heated under CO2 and N2 gases using fluidized bed reactor from 85 °C to 835 °C. Dolomite under N2 atmosphere did not show any significant changes on its crystallite size, suggesting there is no significant chemical reaction. On the other hand, dolomite under CO2 atmosphere shows no significant changes on its crystallite size until it reaches high temperature (> 800 °C) where MgO started to be observed in X- ray diffraction. This shows that few chemical reactions started to happen in this reaction condition.
