Abstract

Analysing objects in an underwater medium is difficult due to light problems in such an environment. Low contrast and visibility in water medium result in restricted information extraction. Some previous methods inadequately reduce underwater colour cast and improve the image contrast minimally. This work proposes intensity-randomised underwater image contrast enhancement (IRUCE), an improved enhancement method that integrates an unsupervised dual-step fusion technique to reduce blue-green colour cast, improve contrast, and enhance image brightness, especially in turbid and deep underwater media. IRUCE enhances the inferior colour channels and moderates the dominant colour channel to reduce the colour cast before the intensity-randomised approach is implemented. The intensity-randomised approach is designed to effectively distribute image intensity across all intensity levels. Next, a swarm intelligence algorithm is fused to perform median equalisation on all colour channels. The median intensity values of inferior colour channels are shifted towards the dominant colour channel. The unsharp masking technique is employed in the last step to increase image sharpness. The effectiveness of this approach is validated through quantitative and qualitative evaluations, and the results are compared with those of other state-of-the-art methods. Abstract

The binary-based algorithms including the binary gravitational search algorithm (BGSA) were designed to solve discrete optimization problems. Many improvements of the binary-based algorithms have been reported. In this paper, a variant of GSA called multi-state gravitational search algorithm (MSGSA) for discrete optimization problems is proposed. The MSGSA concept is based on a simplified mechanism of transition between two states. The performance of the MSGSA is empirically compared to the original BGSA based on six sets of selected benchmarks instances of traveling salesman problem (TSP). The results are statistically analyzed and show that the MSGSA has performed consistently in solving the discrete optimization problems.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the surgical management of a patient with advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma that has completely encircled the common carotid artery. A woman who had a gradually enlarging thyroid mass over 20 years presented with progressive dysphagia and hoarseness for 3 months. Computed Tomography (CT) of neck revealed a huge thyroid mass completely encasing the common carotid artery. Doppler ultrasonography demonstrated patent flow and intact intima without transmural infiltration. The tumor was excised off the carotid artery in a subadventitial plane. Minimal residual tumor extending into the retrosternal region was treated with postoperative radioiodine therapy. Histopathology report of the specimen confirmed a papillary thyroid carcinoma. The use of Doppler ultrasonography, careful preoperative planning and the technique of subadventitial dissection are crucial for a safe and successful outcome in advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma with involvement of the common carotid artery.
