Aerosol acidity is a critical factor affecting atmospheric chemistry. Here, we present a study on annual, monthly, and daily variations in PM2.5 pH in Shanghai during 2010–2020. With the effective control of SO2 emissions, the NO2/SO2 ratio increased from 1.26 in 2010 to 5.07 in 2020 and the NO3−/SO42− ratio increased from 0.68 to 1.49. Aerosol pH decreased from 3.27 in 2010 to 2.93 in 2020, regardless of great achievement in reducing industrial SO2 and NOx emissions. These findings suggest that aerosol acidity might not be significantly reduced in response to the control of SO2 and NOx emissions. The monthly variation in pH values exhibited a V-shape trend, mainly attributable to aerosol compositions and temperature. Atmospheric NH3 plays the decisive role in buffering particle acidity, whereas Ca2+ and K+ are important acidity buffers, and the distinct pH decline during 2010–2016 was associated with the reduction of Ca2+ and K+ while both temperature and SO42− were important drivers in winter. Sensitivity tests show that pH increases with the increasing relative humidity in summer while it is not sensitive to relative humidity in winter due to proportional increases in Hair+ and aerosol liquid water content (ALWC). Our results suggest that reducing NOx emissions in Shanghai will not significantly affect PM2.5 acidity in winter.

Objective: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated inflammatory disorder of the nasal mucosa, and the impact of ozone on AR is gaining increasing attention. Although NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of AR, its regulatory mechanisms in ozone-induced exacerbation remain unclear. Therefore, we explored the impact of ozone inhalation on inflammation in AR and investigated the regulatory mechanisms involving NLRP3. Methods: Fifty female Sprague–Dawley rats were selected and divided into five groups: normal control (NC), normal with ozone exposure (NE), AR model, AR with ozone exposure (ARE), and ARE treated with the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950 (ARE+MCC950). Behavioral changes were observed in the rats, and the expression of NLRP3, active-caspase 1, and GSDMD-N was detected by western blotting. The expression levels of interleukin (IL)− 4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-1β, and ovalbumin-specific IgE (OVA-sIgE) in nasal lavage fluid as well as IL-6 in the serum were measured by ELISA. The expression and distribution of NLRP3 and IL-1β in nasal mucosal tissue were detected by immunohistochemistry, and pathological changes and eosinophilic infiltration in nasal mucosal tissue were observed by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The effects of ozone exposure on inflammation in the nasal mucosal tissue of rats with AR and the relationship between NLRP3 and inflammation were analyzed. Results: Upregulation of NLRP3 was observed in the AR rat model, and ozone further aggravated the expression of NLRP3 in the nasal mucosal tissue. Compared to the AR, NC, and NE groups, NLRP3 inflammasomes were activated in the ARE group, and the expression levels of related indexes active-caspase 1 and GSDMD-N were significantly increased; the expression levels of Th2 inflammatory factors IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and OVA-sIgE were increased, and inflammatory factors such as IL-1β and IL-6 expression was also significantly increased. HE staining revealed that ozone aggravated damage to the nasal mucosal tissue in AR. Compared with the ARE group, the expression of NLRP3 inflammasomes was downregulated, sneezing and scratching symptoms were reduced, inflammatory indicators in nasal lavage fluid were decreased, and nasal mucosal tissue damage was alleviated in rats in the ARE+MCC950 group. Conclusion: Ozone exposure significantly increased the inflammatory response in an animal model of AR. MCC950 can selectively inhibit the expression of NLRP3, inhibit the activity of inflammasomes, and reduce nasal mucosal inflammation by regulating the NLRP3-caspase-1-IL-1β pathway.

Atmospheric mercury plays a crucial role in the biogeochemical cycle of mercury. This study conducted an intensive measurement of atmospheric mercury from 2015 to 2018 at a regional site in eastern China. During this period, the concentration of particle-bound mercury (PBM) decreased by 13%, which was much lower than those of gaseous elemenral mercury (GEM, 30%) and reactive gaseous mercury (GOM, 62%). The gradual decrease in the correlation between PBM and CO, K, and Pb indicates that the influence of primary emissions on PBM concentration was weakening. Moreover, the value of the partitioning coefficient (Kp) increased gradually from 0.05 ± 0.076 m3/μg in 2015 to 0.16 ± 0.37 m3/μg in 2018, indicating that GOM was increasingly inclined to adsorb onto particulate matter. Excluding the influence of meteorological conditions and the primary emissions, the change in aerosol composition is designated as the main trigger factor for the increasing gas-particle partitioning of reactive mercury (RM). The increasing ratio of Cl−, NO3−, and organics (Org) in the chemical composition of particle matters (PM2.5), as well as the decrease in the proportion of SO42−, NH4+, and K+, are conducive to the adsorption of GOM onto particles, forming PBM, which led to an increase of Kp and a lag of PBM reduction compared to GEM and GOM under the continuous control measures of anthropogenic mercury emissions. The evolution of aerosol compositions in recent years affects the migration and transformation of atmospheric mercury, which in turn can affect the biogeochemical cycle of mercury.

As “fuel” for atmospheric photochemical reactions, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a key role in the secondary generation of ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5, an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm). To determine the characteristics of VOCs in a high-level ozone period, comprehensive monitoring of O3 and its precursors (VOCs and NOx) was continuously conducted in an industrial area in Shanghai from 18 August to 30 September 2021. During the observation period, the average concentration of VOCs was 47.33 ppb, and alkanes (19.64 ppb) accounted for the highest proportion of TVOCs, followed by oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) (13.61 ppb), alkenes (6.92 ppb), aromatics (4.65 ppb), halogenated hydrocarbons (1.60 ppb), and alkynes (0.91 ppb). Alkenes were the predominant components that contributed to the ozone formation potential (OFP), while aromatics such as xylene, toluene, and ethylbenzene contributed the most to the secondary organic aerosol production potential (SOAFP). During the study period, O3, NOx, and VOCs showed significant diurnal variations. Industrial processes were the main source of VOCs, and the second largest source of VOCs was vehicle exhaust. While the largest contribution to OFP was from vehicle exhaust, the second largest contribution was from liquid petroleum gas (LPG). High potential source contribution function (PSCF) values were observed in western and southeastern areas near the sampling sites. The results of a health risk evaluation showed that the Hazard Index was less than 1 and there was no non-carcinogenic risk, but 1,3-butadiene, benzene, chloroform, 1,2-dibromoethane, and carbon tetrachloride pose a potential carcinogenic risk to the population.

China experienced severe haze pollution in the past decades. However, systematic characterization of atmospheric fine particles with advanced measurement techniques has been very scarce in Shanghai, which is the largest megacity in China. Herein, we present the characterization of non-refractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) in urban Shanghai during winter 2017 by applying an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM, Aerodyne Research Inc.). The NR-PM1 is predominated by organics (43%), followed by nitrate (29%), sulfate (18%), ammonium (7%), and chloride (3%). Regarding the organic aerosol (OA) factors, three organic aerosol factors were identified and classified as hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA), less-oxygenated organic aerosol (LO-OOA), and more-oxygenated organic aerosol (MO-OOA), which contributed 32%, 22%, and 46% to total organic aerosol respectively. The NR-PM1 composition exhibited an increase in secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) (sulfate, nitrate and ammonium) contribution from clean episodes (49%) to pollution episodes (59%), while organic aerosol contribution decreased accordingly from 48% to 39%. The strong increase of sulfate in high-relative humidity (RH) pollution episodes indicated that aqueous-phase oxidation of SO2 could be an important formation process for sulfate during particulate air pollution period. The contribution of nitrate was elevated from 25% during clean episodes to 32% during polluted episodes, likely owing to the increase of relative humidity which facilitates the hydrolysis of N2O5 and the gas-to-particle partitioning of hydrophilic NH4NO3 and. Further analysis of atmospheric formation relevance suggested that less-oxygenated organic aerosol formation was mainly driven by aqueous-phase chemistry reactions, whereas photochemical oxidation became an important process for more-oxygenated organic aerosol formation. Meanwhile, less-oxygenated organic aerosol formation may also be influenced by atmospheric oxidative tracer (i.e., Ox), as less-oxygenated organic aerosol exhibited a distinct peak at noon under high-relative humidity condition.

Objective and design: An experimental rat allergic rhinitis(AR) model was made to explore the effect of different concentrations of ozone exposure and evaluate the roles of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2) and oxidative stress in ozone exposure. Method: Sprague-Dawley rats were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA). Three groups of AR rats were exposed respectively to different concentrations of ozone for 2 h on 6 weeks. Nasal symptoms and OVA- specific Ig E in the serum were evaluated. The pathological changes in the nasal mucosa were examined. Malondialdehyde (MDA) level and activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px,GPX) in the nasal mucosa tissue were measured through a spectrophotometry-based method. Nrf2、Kelch-1ike ECH- associated protein-l (Keap1) proteins was measured by western blotting. GPX1、GPX2 mRNA were detected by quantitative real time-PCR(qRT-PCR). Results: Our results showed that ozone exposure induced a significant increase of the number of sneezes, nasal rubs, amount of nasal secretion and OVA-sIgE in the serum of AR model. Ozone effected oxidative stress in different concentration. The content of MDA in AREH group was significantly higher than AR groups. The activities of SOD and GSH-Px in nasal mucosa showed different trends in different concentration groups. The activities of SOD and GSH-Px in AREL and AREM groups were higher than AR group, but decreased at AREH group. The nucleoprotein level of Nrf2 in AREL and AREM groups was higher than AR groups. However, in AREH group, it was significantly decreased, compared with AREL and AREM groups. GPX1 and GPX2 mRNA levels in nasal mucosa showed the same trend in different exposure groups. Conclusions: Different concentrations of ozone inhalation causes changes of the expression of Nrf2 nuclear protein and its target genes in nasal mucosa of AR. High concentration ozone breaks the redox balance and aggravates oxidative damage in AR. This study suggests that inhibiting oxidative stress might be a solution for ozone-elicited detrimental effects on AR.

Shanghai, one of China’s largest metropolises, faces significant environmental pollution challenges due to rapid economic development. Suburban areas of Shanghai are affected by both long-distance transport and local sources of pollutants. This study conducted an integrated analysis that links health-risk assessment of heavy metals and source apportionment of atmospheric constituents to distinguish the contributions of emission sources and the major sources of health risks. Source-apportionment analysis revealed that secondary sources had the greatest contribution to the local pollutants, indicating the significant influence of peripheral and long-distance transport. Health-risk assessment of Cr, Ni, As, and Cd revealed that local residents were exposed to respiratory health risks, in which Cr is the major contributor. This health risk was primarily associated with emissions from nearby industry-related sources. Our study highlights the significant effects of both long-distance transport and local source emissions on atmospheric composition and human health in large urban agglomerations. The findings can inform future efforts to develop more precise emission-reduction strategies and policy improvements to mitigate environmental pollution and protect public health.

Continued exacerbation of ozone (O3) pollution in China has driven the urgent need for an emission control strategy that efficiently reduces O3 levels. Determining O3 precursor sensitivity (OPS) and its driving factors is a prerequisite for formulating effective O3 control strategies. In this study, we proposed an atmospheric oxidative capacity-based indicator, HO2/OH, and demonstrated its effectiveness in indicating OPS over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) of China by applying a localized comprehensive air quality model with extensions (CAMx) coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. A strong correlation was discovered between HO2/OH and OPS, and HO2/OH showed the best performance in separating NOx- and VOC-limited regimes in comparison with other commonly used indicators. A comprehensive analysis with ensemble diagnostic tools revealed the spatial heterogeneity of NOx and VOC emissions and the impact of regional transport controlling the relationship between OPS variations and the HO2/OH indicator over the YRD. The process analysis results show that days with higher contributions from horizontal advection favored OPS transitions in Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei, Suzhou, and Wuhu, while vertical advection caused OPS transitions in Hangzhou and Ningbo. O3 source apportionment technology analysis indicated that the regional contributions from Zhejiang and Jiangsu/Anhui corresponded well to the NOx-limited and VOC-limited regimes, respectively. Our results provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the relationship between OPS and the HO2/OH indicator and can help guide contingency control measures for O3 despiking over the YRD and other photochemically active regions worldwide.

Ground-level O3 pollution has been continuously worsening in China despite gradual improvement in other major pollutant levels. Understanding the sensitivity of O3 production to its precursors (OPS) is a prerequisite for formulating effective O3 control measures, but this has been hampered by significant discrepancies in OPS produced by traditional identification approaches using observation-based models (OBM) and emission-based models (EBM). In this study, by applying OBM and EBM in parallel within a month having significant O3 pollution in Shanghai, China, we demonstrated that a lack of carbonyl input, overestimation in NO2 monitoring data, and differences in simulation period and emission reduction area were the core factors leading to OPS discrepancies, and that a reliable OPS cannot be obtained unless these factors are reconciled. By collectively addressing these factors, the number of days with a consistent OPS from both models increased from 6–7 to 20–21 in a month, and the R value defined to quantify the discrepancy decreased by ∼55%. The contributions of these factors to OPS discrepancy differed greatly in urban and suburban settings, mainly caused by differences in pollutant emission and transport characteristics. Overall, OPS identified solely by OBM or EBM is associated with great uncertainty, while reliable OPS estimation can be achieved by a collective application of OBM and EBM with consensus on the above factors. The method demonstrated here could be applied to other photo-chemically active regions worldwide as part of efforts to address ozone pollution.

Atmospheric ammonia (NH _3 ) plays a significant role in the nitrogen cycle, and can have impacts on air quality, ecological balance and climate change. While NH _3 associated with natural and agricultural processes has long been considered the primary source, the contribution of combustion-related NH _3 , particularly from vehicular emissions, keeps on the rise. We found that high on-road NH _3 concentrations occurred in a metropolitan city based on mobile measurement, and inferred that urban vehicular NH _3 emission was likely underestimated in the past. NH _3 emission factors (EFs) were derived from ring roads and tunnels, showing levels 74% and 20% higher than the latest standard proposed by Euro VII, respectively. To quantify the underestimation, two methods based on car ownership and traffic flow were used to estimate the annual vehicular NH _3 emission in Shanghai as 2.59 and 1.76 Gg, respectively, substantially surpassing the predicted results by the Dynamic Projection model for Emissions in China. Given these discoveries, we recommend that it is urgent and imperative to establish relevant national standards and limits aiming at regulation on vehicular NH _3 emissions. And more representative EFs measurements should be adopted to improve the accuracy of inventory estimation.

Indoor gaseous pollutants pose a great threat to human health, graphene aerogel (GA) has attracted more and more attention due to its high adsorption performance. However, the increase of the adsorption capacity together with high strength for long time and repeat using is still a challenge. In this study, a novel silica modification method was proposed to modify graphene aerogels with high strength and ultrahigh adsorption capability. Apart from its high adsorption capacity for liquid toluene, the adsorption capability to benzene, an indoor pollutant gas, was increased to 809.51 mg/g, which is higher than pure graphene aerogel and other carbon-based adsorbents such as graphene, activated carbon and single-wall carbon nanotubes. The enhanced adsorption performance is due to two reasons in addition to the electrostatic interactions. On one hand, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) could help to modify the pore structure of aerogel, reducing its average pore diameter and increasing its BET specific surface area. On the other hand, the addition of TEOS could help to improve the hydrophobicity of aerogel. The selective adsorption character of graphene aerogels to benzene/toluene binary system in the breakthrough experiment confirmed that the prepared graphene aerogels could also be used in the field of separation of multicomponent indoor pollutant gases.

Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) was monitored using a mobile sensor network on 125 urban taxis in Shanghai (November 2019/December 2020), which provide real-time patterns of air pollution at high spatial resolution. Each device determined concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and PM2.5, which characterised spatial and temporal patterns of on-road pollutants. A total of 80% road coverage (motorways, trunk, primary, and secondary roads) required 80–100 taxis, but only 25 on trunk roads. Higher CO concentrations were observed in the urban centre, NO2 higher in motorway concentrations, and PM2.5 lower in the west away from the city centre. During the COVID-19 lockdown, concentrations of CO, NO2, and PM2.5 in Shanghai decreased by 32, 31 and 41%, compared with the previous period. Local contribution related to traffic emissions changed slightly before and after COVID-19 restrictions, while changing background contributions relate to seasonal variation. Mobile networks are a real-time tool for air quality monitoring, with high spatial resolution (~200 m) and robust against the loss of individual devices.

Background: Ozone (O3) exposure elicits allergic rhinitis (AR) exacerbations by mechanisms that remain poorly understood. We used a rat model to investigate the effects of O3 on eosinophilic airway inflammation and Th2-related response. Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) to make AR models. Three groups of AR rats were exposed respectively to 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 ppm of O3 for 2 h daily over 6 weeks consecutively and studied 24 h later. Normal rats exposed to O3 alone were used as controls. Nasal symptoms and OVA-specific immunoglobulin E (OVA-sIg E) in the serum were evaluated. Inflammatory cells in nasal lavage fluid (NLF) were classified and counted. Cytokines protein levels in NLF were assessed by ELISA. The pathological changes in the nasal mucosa were examined by histology. Results: The combination of allergen and repeated O3 exposure in rats induced a significant increase of the number of sneezes, nasal rubs, amount of nasal secretion and OVA-sIgE in the serum, accompanied by enhancement of eosinophils in NLF and nasal mucosa. The increase of interleukin-5 (IL-5), IL-13, Eotaxin and decrease of INF-γ protein levels in NLF were detected in AR rats after O3 inhalation. Hematoxylin and eosin staining showed disordered arrangement of the nasal mucosa epithelium and eosinophilic infiltration in a concentration-dependent manner. Conclusions: O3 inhalation deteriorated symptoms in AR rats, and the possible mechanism is that ozone co-exposure could enhance the expression of Th2 cytokines, eosinophilic airway inflammation dose-dependently. The observation is helpful for us to understand the synergistic effect of O3 in the air pollution and allergen on aggravating allergic rhinitis.

To investigate composition characteristics and assess occupational health risks and odor pollution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial activities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China, one-year field measurements of VOCs were conducted simultaneously at an iron and steel industrial park (ISP), one chemical industrial park (CMP) and one petrochemical industrial park (PCP) from September, 2018 to August, 2019. The concentrations of VOCs were 80.2 ± 67.9 ppbv, 28.1 ± 27.2 ppbv and 144 ± 378 ppbv for ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Aromatics, alkanes and alkenes were the major components of VOCs at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Moreover, the toluene to benzene ratios were 0.330 ± 0.302, 4.31 ± 6.48 and 1.84 ± 3.34, which generally showed the characteristics of combustion source for ISP, industrial activities for CMP and petrochemical industry for PCP, respectively. The hazard index values were 0.752 ± 0.438, 0.108 ± 0.248 and 0.090 ± 0.260 at ISP, CMP and PCP, which were generally lower than threshold limit value, suggesting a low noncarcinogenic risk for workers. Meanwhile, the 95th percentile LCR values of VOCs were 8.76 × 10−5, 1.15 × 10−5 and 1.00 × 10−5 at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively, which were also under acceptable risk level, indicating a low carcinogenic risk. Benzene and 1,3-butadiene were main harmful substances for both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of VOCs. The odor levels of VOCs were 2.12 ± 4.21, 12.5 ± 28.7 and 1.01 ± 7.84 at ISP, CMP and PCP, respectively. Aromatics for ISP and sulfide compounds for CMP and PCP were primary pollutants for odor pollution. This work could improve the understanding of risk levels and odor characteristics of VOCs and benefit policy development on alleviating odor complaints and health risks for workers in YRD region, China.

Background: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been widely associated with airway inflammation represented by increased fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). However, it remains unclear whether various PM2.5 constituents have different impacts on FeNO and its production process from the arginase (ARG)–nitric oxide synthase (NOS) pathway. Objectives: To investigate the acute effects of PM2.5 constituents on FeNO and DNA methylation of genes involved. Methods: We conducted a longitudinal panel study among 43 young adults in Shanghai, China from May to October in 2016. We monitored the concentrations of 25 constituents of PM2.5. We applied the linear mixed-effect model to evaluate the associations of PM2.5 constituents with FeNO and DNA methylation of the ARG2 and NOS2A genes. Results: Following PM2.5 exposure, NOS2A methylation decreased and ARG2 methylation increased only on the concurrent day, whereas FeNO increased most prominently on the second day. Nine constituents (OC, EC, K, Fe, Zn, Ba, Cr, Se, and Pb) showed consistent associations with elevated FeNO and decreased NOS2A methylation or increased ARG2 methylation in single-constituent models and models adjusting for PM2.5 total mass and collinearity. An interquartile range increase of these constituents was associated with respective decrements of 0.27–1.20 in NOS2A methylation (%5mC); increments of 0.48–1.56 in ARG2 methylation (%5mC); and increments of 7.12%–17.54% in FeNO. Conclusions: Our results suggested that OC, EC, and some metallic elements may be mainly responsible for the development and epigenetic regulation of airway inflammatory response induced by short-term PM2.5 exposure. Among a series of 3D printing techniques, stereolithography provides a new route to produce ceramic architectures with the advantages of high-precision and short cycle time. However, up to now the stereolithography of non-oxide ceramics still face complex and difficult problems. This work focused on the analysis of rheological and curing ability of Si3N4 photocurable slurries. The effects of monomer type, coarse silicon powder, solid loading and ambient temperature on the rheological behavior were intensively studied. The relationships between powder characteristic (involving refractive index, absorbance and the introduce of coarse silicon powder), monomer type and curing ability were discussed in detail. It is expected that this study may benefit the development of Si3N4 or other non-oxide ceramic slurries for stereolithography.

Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution is still one of the priorities and challenges for air pollution control in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China. Understanding the relationship of O3 with its precursors and contributions of different sources in O3 formation is essential for the development of an O3 control strategy. This study analyzed O3 sensitivity to its precursors using a box model based on online observations of O3, non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and carbon monoxide (CO) at an urban site and a suburban site in Shanghai in July 2017. Anthropogenic sources of NMHCs were identified using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model, and then contributions of different sources in O3 formation were estimated by the observation-based model (OBM). The relative incremental reactivity (RIR) values calculated by the OBM suggest that O3 formation at the urban site was in the NMHC-limited regime, while O3 formation at the suburban site tended between the transition regime and the NMHC-limited regime. Vehicular emission and liquefied petrochemical gas (LPG) use or aged air mass were found to be the two largest contributors at the urban and suburban sites in July, followed by paint and solvent use, and the petrochemical industry. However, from the perspective of O3 formation, vehicular emission and paint and solvent use were the largest two contributors at two sites due to the higher RIR values for paint and solvent use. In addition, the influence of transport on O3 sensitivity was identified by comparing O3 sensitivity at the suburban site across two days with different air mass paths. The result revealed that O3 formation in Shanghai is not only related to local emissions but also influenced by emissions from neighboring provinces. These findings on O3−NMHC−NOX sensitivity, contributions of different sources in O3 formation, and influence of transport could be useful for O3 pollution control in the YRD region. Nevertheless, more quantitative analyses on transport and further evaluation of the uncertainty of the OBM are still needed in future.

Instruments based on light scattering used to measure total suspended particulate (TSP) concentrations have the advantages of fast response, small size, and low cost compared to the gravimetric reference method. However, the relationship between scattering intensity and TSP mass concentration varies nonlinearly with both environmental conditions and particle properties, making it difficult to make corrections. This study applied four machine learning models (support vector machines, random forest, gradient boosting regression trees, and an artificial neural network) to correct scattering measurements for TSP mass concentrations. A total of 1141 hourly records of collocated gravimetric and light scattering measurements taken at 17 urban sites in Shanghai, China were used for model training and validation. All four machine learning models improved the linear regressions between scattering and gravimetric mass by increasing slopes from 0.4 to 0.9−1.1 and coefficients of determination from 0.1 to 0.8−0.9. Partial dependence plots indicate that TSP concentrations determined by light scattering instruments increased continuously in the PM2.5 concentration range of ~0−80 µg/m3; however, they leveled off above PM10 and TSP concentrations of ~60 and 200 µg/m3, respectively. The TSP mass concentrations determined by scattering showed an exponential growth after relative humidity exceeded 70%, in agreement with previous studies on the hygroscopic growth of fine particles. This study demonstrates that machine learning models can effectively improve the correlation between light scattering measurements and TSP mass concentrations with filter-based methods. Interpretation analysis further provides scientific insights into the major factors (e.g., hygroscopic growth) that cause scattering measurements to deviate from TSP mass concentrations besides other factors like fluctuation of mass density and refractive index.

This article discusses the impact of air pollutants and meteorological factors on outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis (AR) in Shanghai, China. The study collected data on atmospheric pollutants and meteorological variables from January 2017 to December 2019, as well as clinical visit data from five hospitals during the same period. The results showed that elevated levels of NO2 and O3 were strongly associated with increased hospital visits for AR patients. Additionally, meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and air pressure also influenced outpatient visits. Si3N4 ceramics have been attractive casing materials for electronics devices under the 5th generation mobile communication technology because of its outstanding comprehensive properties. However, single color cannot meet the needs of most consumers. Here, a typical strategy, involving forming core‐shell structures by utilizing Nd2O3‐MgO‐YAG system, is proposed to rich color. Scanning transmission electron microscope‐energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometry results confirm the presence of core‐shell structures in the silicon nitride matrix, and the core is pore and the shell is Nd‐enriched liquid phase. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) has been widely used to apportion the sources of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by utilizing PM chemical speciation data measured at receptor site(s). Traditional PMF, which typically relies on long-term observational datasets of daily or lower time resolution to meet the required sample size, has its reliability undermined by changes in source profiles, thus it is inherently ill-suited for apportioning sporadic sources or ephemeral pollution events. In this study, we explored short-term source apportionment of PM2.5 using a set of hourly chemical speciation data over a period of thirty-seven days in the winter of 2019-2020. PMF run with campaign-wide data as input (PMFref) was initially conducted to obtain reference profiles for the primary source factors. Subsequently, short-term PMF analysis was performed using the Source Finder Professional (SoFi Pro). The analysis sets a window length as the first 18 d of the campaign and constrained the primary source profiles using the a-value approach embedded in SoFi software. Rolling PMF was then conducted with a fixed window length of 18 d and a step of 1 d using the remaining dataset. By applying the a-value constraints to the primary sources, the rolling PMF effectively reproduced the individual primary sources, as evidenced by the slope values close to unity (i.e., 0.9-1.0). However, the estimation for the firework emission factor in the rolling PMF was lower compared with the PMFref (slope: 0.8). These results suggest the unique advantage of short-term PMF analysis in accurately apportioning sporadic sources. Although the total secondary sources were well-modelled (slope: 1.0), larger biases were observed for individual secondary sources. The variation in source profiles indicated higher variability for the secondary sources, with average relative differences ranging from 42% to 173%, while the primary source profiles exhibited much smaller variabilities (relative differences of 8-26%). This study suggests that short-term PMF analysis with the a-value constraints in SoFi can be utilized to apportion primary sources accurately, while future efforts are needed to improve the prediction of individual secondary sources.
