Gas-phase chromatography studies of nihonium (Nh, $Z=113$ ) were carried out at the one-atom-at-a-time level. For the production of nihonium, the heavy-ion-induced nuclear fusion reaction of 48Ca with 243Am was used. This leads to isotopes 284,285Nh, as the direct descendants of the $\alpha$ -decaying precursors 288,289Mc. Combining the Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator with gas-phase chromatographic separation, the experiment was sensitive to elemental nihonium and its adsorption behavior on Teflon, theoretically predicted by modern relativistic density functional theory. The non-observation of any decays of Nh after the chemical separation indicates a larger than expected retention of elemental Nh on a Teflon surface.

Recently, in the DGFRS related experiments the discoveries of new superheavy elements Z=114-118 were successfully performed. As concerns to a background radical suppression in those experiments it was namely “active correlations” method which was applied to this goal. Note, that application of DSSSD detector allows one to apply this method more effectively, although with some difficulties due to neighbor strips edge effects. Present version of the DGFRS spectrometer is presented. First results of its application in the 240Pu+48Ca→Fl∗ complete fusion nuclear reaction are presented too.

Summary A chemical separation procedure for Rf/Db is described which was applied to a long-lived decay product from the nuclear fusion reaction 48Ca+ 243Am. A 1.2 mg thick 243Am target was bombarded by 247 MeV 48Ca particles. The recoiling products were collected in a thick Cu catcher for about one day and then subjected to a chemical separation procedure that included an ion exchange from dilute HF solutions. Final samples were prepared on 30 μg/cm2 thick polyethylene (PE) foils and counted in 4π-geometry for α-particles and spontaneous fission (SF) coincidences. The detector arrays were surrounded by 3He detectors to also assay prompt neutrons. Decontamination factors from actinides of about 105 were achieved. Group 6 (W) to 14 (Pb) elements as models for their heavier homologues were shown to be separated from the Rf/Db fraction with more than 90%. In eight final samples, representing a total beam dose of 3.4 × 1018 particles, 15 SF events were detected. The decay pattern points to a single component with a half-life of ≈32h, which shows a chemical behavior similar to the lighter homologues of group 4 and 5 elements.

The recent discovery of the elements 115 and 113 in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am was confirmed by an independent radiochemical experiment based on the identification of the long-lived decay product dubnium.

During the recent years, at the FLNR (JINR) a successful cycle of experiments has been accomplished on the synthesis of the superheavy elements with Z=112–118 with 48Ca beam. From the viewpoint of the detection of rare decays and background suppression, this success was achieved due to the application of a new radical technique - the method of active correlations. The method employs search in a real-time mode for a pointer to a probable correlation like recoil-alpha for switching the beam off. In the case of detection in the same detector strip an additional alpha-decay event, of “beam OFF” time interval is prolonged automatically. Reasonable scenarios of developing the method are considered. PC based data acquisition system as well as the monitoring and control system of the Dubna Gas Filled Recoil Separator is considered in brief too.

The arrangement of the chemical elements in the periodic table highlights resemblances in chemical properties, which reflect the elements’ electronic structure. For the heaviest elements, however, deviations in the periodicity of chemical properties are expected1,2,3: electrons in orbitals with a high probability density near the nucleus are accelerated by the large nuclear charges to relativistic velocities, which increase their binding energies and cause orbital contraction. This leads to more efficient screening of the nuclear charge and corresponding destabilization of the outer d and f orbitals: it is these changes that can give rise to unexpected chemical properties. The synthesis of increasingly heavy elements4,5,6, now including that of elements 114, 116 and 118, allows the investigation of this effect, provided sufficiently long-lived isotopes for chemical characterization are available7. In the case of elements 104 and 105, for example, relativistic effects interrupt characteristic trends in the chemical properties of the elements constituting the corresponding columns of the periodic table8, whereas element 106 behaves in accordance with the expected periodicity9,10,11,12. Here we report the chemical separation and characterization of six atoms of element 107 (bohrium, Bh), in the form of its oxychloride. We find that this compound is less volatile than the oxychlorides of the lighter elements of group VII, thus confirming relativistic calculations13 that predict the behaviour of bohrium, like that of element 106, to coincide with that expected on the basis of its position in the periodic table.
