Bu problemlerden birisi biyolojik sürecin metaller tarafından inhibisyonudur. Ağır metalleri içeren atiksular, biyolojik süreçten önce bir ön arıtıma tabi tutulsalar da az miktarda ağır metaller geriye kalır ve bu ağır metaller substrat arıtma verimini, biyokinetik sabitlerini, nitrifikasyonu ve çamur çökme özelliklerini kötü yönde etkiler. Yüksek derişimlerdeki ağır metallerin bir çok rnikroorganizma üzerine toksik etkileri vardır ve sistemi çalışmaz duruma getirirler. Ancak ağır metal derişiminin çok yüksek olmaması kaydıyla ve uygun bir alıştırma süreci ile biyolojik sistemler kötü yönde etkilenmeden çalıştırılabilirler. Üstelik, orta derişimlerdeki ağır metaller sistemi olumlu yönde etkiler. Ayrıca atıksulardaki bir metalin etkisi birlikte bulunduğu diğer metal veya metallerle değişebilir. Bu çalışmanın amacı sentetik atiksuişleyen bir Aktif Çamur Sürecinde Cu2+ ve Zn2+ iyonlarının substrat arıtım verimine ve biyokinetik sabitlerine olan etkilerini geniş bir ortalama kalış süresi aralığında incelemektir. Bu çalışmada deneyler üç bölüm halinde yapılmıştır, (i) Mikro organizmaları ağır metallere alıştırma deneyleri, (ii) Ağır metal içermeyen deneyler (iii) Ağır metalleri içeren deneyler. îlk kısımlardaki deneylerde mikroorganizmalar metallere alıştırıldılar. İkinci kısımdaki deneylerde üçüncü kısım deneylere temel oluşturmak amacıyla ağır metallerin bulunmadığı sentetik aüksu içeren bir sürekli kanşûrmalı tank reaktör mikroorganizmalarla aşılanmış ve substrat antim verimi ortalama hücre kalış süresinin doğrusal bir fonksiyonu olarak bulunmuş ve biyokinetik sabitleri tespit edilmiştir. Buna göre Umax» ^s» Y ve k^ sırasıyla 0.33 h`1, 187 mg COD/L, 0.34 mg MLSS/mg COD ve yaklaşık olarak, 0.0 h`1 bulunmuştur. Üçüncü kısım deneylerde ise aynı reaktör 1.5 mg Cu2+/L ve 9 mg Zn2+/L içeren atıksu ile alışünlmış mikroorganizma ile çalıştırılmış substrat arıtım verimi ortalama hücre kalış süresinin değişken bir fonksiyonu olarak bulunmuştur. Sonuçta sentetik atık suda bulunan Cu2+ ve Zn2+ 'nun Aktif Çamur Sürecine net etkileri inhibisyon olarak saptanmıştır. One of the problems is inhibition of the biological process by heavy metals. Although wastewaters containing heavy metals are sometimes pretreated to remove the metals before the biological process, there are still some heavy metals left Even that small amounts of heavy metals can cause adverse effects on nitrification, the substrate removal efficiency, the biokinetic constants, and the settling characteristics of sludge. High concentrations of heavy metals are toxic to most microorganisms and often cause serious upsets in the biological wastewater treatment systems. However, when the metal concentration is not too high, and a proper acclimation process is allowed, then a biological system can be used without being adversely affected. Besides, heavy metals at moderate concentrations can even stimulate the system. The presence of more than one metal often gives rise to the interactive effects. mSo, the aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Cu2+ and Zn2+ together in the wastewater and their concentration levels on substrate removal efficiency and on the biokinetic constants in Activated Sludge Process over a wide range of mean cell residence times. In this study, experiments were performed in three main phases: (i) Experiments for acclimation of microorganisms to heavy metals, (ii) Experiments without heavy metals, (iii) Experiments with heavy metals. In the first phase of experiment, microorganisms were acclimated to heavy metals. In the second phase of experiments, a completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) was operated without heavy metals as a control unit and biokinetic constants of the synthetic wastewater inoculated with seed microorganisms were determined and a linear relationship between substrate removal efficiency and mean cell residence time was found. These constants, namely Hm^, Kg, Y and kd were found as 0.33 h`1, 187 rag COD/L, 0.34 mg MLSS/mg COD and approximately, 0.0 h-1 respectively. Experimental studies conducted with acclimated microorganisms for processing a wastewater containing 1.5 mg Cu2+/L and 9 mg Zn2+/L a variable relationship between substrate removal efficiency and mean cell residence time was obtained. The net result of the presence of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in a synthetic wastewater was determined to be inhibitory on the Activated Sludge Process. Key Words: Active Sludge Process, Heavy Metals, Toxicity.
