Abstract Global warming has led to the enhancement of diurnal (daytime-nighttime) compound heat waves, which can severely affect the population’s physical health and productive life; this is particularly the case for vulnerable populations that are more susceptible to psychological and physiological harm with the future normalization of heatwave scenarios. In this study, we attributed the changes in population exposure under diurnal compound high temperatures (HTs) and extremely high temperatures (EHTs) to the influence of climatic (exposure duration) and population factors and their combined influence to determine the relationship between exposure duration and the changes in exposure of vulnerable populations. Diurnal compound HT and EHT covered a land area of 4,016,800 and 1,984,200 km2, respectively. The heat-exposed area spread step-like in all directions, centering on the 24-h high-exposure area with a strong gradient effect. The area of prolonged exposure shifted from the Yellow-Huai-Huai Plain across the geographical boundary between the south and the north to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Plain. Meanwhile, the average maximum value of vulnerable population exposure reached 186,800 and 93,100 person-h, with high values in Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan, Chengdu, Beijing, and other cities. Changes in vulnerable population exposure were dominated first by demographic factors and then by climatic factors, with the dominance of climatic factors evident in areas of prolonged exposure. Under prolonged exposure to daytime-nighttime compound EHT, changes in the exposure of child and older populations were dominated by climatic factors with a contribution rate of 87.16% and 87.43%, respectively. Therefore, suitable cooling measures should be proposed for vulnerable populations under prolonged exposure, focusing more on the physical and mental health of children and older adults exposed to compound EHT.

Abstract Numerous studies have suggested that the perceived built environment is shaped by the objective built environment and influences human physical activity. However, the empirical examination of this pathway remains scant. Addressing this gap, our study investigates whether the built environment affects leisure-time physical activity through its impact on the perceived built environment, utilizing data collected from 760 residents in Fuzhou, China. Structural Equation Modeling results reveal a modest correlation between objective and perceived built environment elements, with the objective built environment being a stronger predictor of leisure-time physical activity. Notably, perceived recreational facilities significantly mediate the relationship between objective recreational facilities and leisure-time physical activity, accounting for 15% of the variance in physical activity due to objective recreational facilities. This mediation effect is consistent across subpopulations, irrespective of residential self-selection biases. These results highlight the imperative for urban planning and policy to extend beyond mere spatial allocation of amenities to enhancing both the actual and perceived accessibility of these facilities, thus underlining the study's profound implications for public health and urban development strategies.

Abstract Background Organic phosphorus insecticides (OPPs) are a class of environmental pollutants widely used worldwide with potential human health risks. We aimed to assess the association between exposure to OPPs and osteoarthritis (OA) particularly in participants with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Methods Participants’ information was obtained from data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANES). Weighted logistic regression models were utilized to detect associations between OPPs metabolites and OA. Restricted cubic spline plots (RCS) were drawn to visualize the dose-response relationship between each metabolite and OA prevalence. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel-machine regression (BKMR), were applied to investigate the joint effect of mixtures of OPPs on OA. Results A total of 6871 samples were included in our study, no significant associations between OPPs exposure and OA incidence were found in whole population. However, in a subset of 475 individuals with ASCVD, significant associations between DMP (odds ratio [OR] as a continuous variable = 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07,1.28), DEP ((odds ratio [OR] of the highest tertile compared to the lowest = 2.43, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21,4.86), and OA were observed. DMP and DEP showed an increasing dose-response relationship to the prevalence of OA, while DMTP, DETP, DMDTP and DEDTP showed a nonlinear relationship. Multi-contamination modeling revealed a 1.34-fold (95% confidence intervals:0.80, 2.26) higher prevalence of OA in participants with high co-exposure to OPPs compared to those with low co-exposure, with a preponderant weighting (0.87) for the dimethyl dialkyl phosphate metabolites (DMAPs). The BKMR also showed that co-exposure of mixed OPPs was associated with an increased prevalence of OA, with DMP showing a significant dose-response relationship. Conclusion High levels of urine dialkyl phosphate metabolites (DAP) of multiple OPPs are associated with an increased prevalence of OA in patients with ASCVD, suggesting the need to prevent exposure to OPPs in ASCVD patients to avoid triggering OA and further avoid the occurrence of cardiovascular events caused by OA.

Abstract In recent years, most video segmentation methods use deep CNN to process the input image, but they did not fully mine the rich intermediate predictions in spatio‐temporal space. And, the segmentation challenges such as occlusion, severe deformation and illumination have not been well solved so far. To alleviate these problems, this paper focuses on constructing multi module network structures that represent multi semantics and proposes a video object segmentation network via coupled‐stream architecture with feature memory mechanism. This network first extracts high‐level semantic features, edge features, long‐term and short‐term stable depth features of the target, and then decode them into the segmentation mask of target. In addition, negative skeleton inhibition and frame interpolation are used to prevent the interference of similar objects and motion blur, respectively. The method has a low GPU memory usage, regardless of the number of object in video. And performs 86.5%and 62.4% in J&F measure on DAVIS 2016 and DAVIS 2017 validation set, without fine‐tuning and online training.

To date, the exploration of multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) has rarely ventured into the realm of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structures. In this research, we embarked on a pioneering systematic comparison between a single-phase Ti-Zr-Hf HCP-MPEA and Ti regarding their dislocation activities and mesoscale deformation homogeneity. Through large-area high-resolution quasi-in-situ slip trace analysis and crystal plasticity finite element modeling, we identified HCP-MPEA’s significantly enhanced pyramidal slip activities—resulted from minimized disparities among different deformation modes—notably improve the material’s intragranular deformation homogeneity. Alongside MPEA’s intrinsically high slip resistance, it renders HCP-MPEA an outstanding strength-toughness combination relative to its conventional HCP counterparts.

Abstract Background Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a specific subpopulation of cancer cells with the ability of self‐renewal, infinite proliferation, multidifferentiation and tumorigenicity, and play critical roles in cancer progression and treatment resistance. CSCs are tightly regulated by the tumor microenvironment, such as hypoxia; however, how hypoxia regulates CSCs in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. Methods The proportion of ALDHhi cells was examined using the Aldefluor assay. Tankyrase inhibitor XAV939 and siRNA were used to inhibit β‐catenin while pcDNA3‐β‐catenin (S33Y) plasmid enhanced the expression of β‐catenin. Western blot was administered for protein detection. The mRNA expression was measured by quantitative real‐time PCR. Results We found that hypoxia led to an increase in the proportion of ALDHhi cells in lung squamous carcinoma (LUSC) H520 cells, while causing a decrease in the ALDHhi cell proportion in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) A549 cells. Similarly, β‐catenin expression was upregulated in H520 cells but downregulated in A549 cells upon exposure to hypoxia. Mechanically, the proportion of ALDHhi cells in both cell lines was decreased by β‐catenin inhibitor or siRNA knockdown, whereas increased after β‐catenin overexpression. Furthermore, hypoxia treatment suppressed E‐cadherin expression in H520 cells and enhanced N‐cadherin and β‐catenin expression, while this effect was completely opposite in A549 cells. Conclusion The hypoxia‐EMT‐β‐catenin axis functions as an important regulator for the proportion of CSCs in NSCLC and could potentially be explored as therapeutic targets in the future.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the single upper‐arm cuff oscillometric blood pressure (BP) monitor RBP‐9801 developed for office and home BP measurement in the general population according to the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation/European Society of Hypertension/International Organization for Standardization (AAMI/ESH/ISO) Universal Standard (ISO 81060–2:2018). Subjects were recruited to fulfil the age, gender, BP and cuff distribution criteria of the AAMI/ESH/ISO Universal Standard in general population using the same arm sequential BP measurement method. A total of 105 subjects were recruited and 85 were analyzed. For validation criterion 1, the mean ± SD of the differences between the test device and reference BP readings was 2.3 ± 6.4/3.1 ± 5.8 mmHg (systolic/diastolic). For criterion 2, the SD of the mean BP differences between the test device and reference BP per subject was 5.24/5.03 mmHg (systolic/diastolic). The conclusion is that the RBP‐9801 oscillometric device for office and home BP measurement fulfilled all the requirements of the AAMI/ESH/ISO Universal Standard (ISO 81060–2:2018) in the general population and can be recommended for clinic and self‐use at home.

Groundwater is a crucial water resource for various usages worldwide. The Quetta Valley of Pakistan was investigated regarding its groundwater quality sustainability based on integrated approaches of hydrochemistry, geographic information system, and multivariate statistics. A total of 29 groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells to get insights into the hydrochemical suitability of groundwater for sustainable irrigation and drinking utilization. The results indicate groundwater is mainly featured by the hydrochemical facies of HCO3·Cl-Ca. Groundwater hydrochemical composition is dominantly governed by the dissolution of carbonates and silicate minerals in combination with positive cation exchange in the valley. Principal component analysis reveals a significant influence of geogenic factors on groundwater chemistry, further supported by PHREEQC simulation that detects a supersaturation of calcite, dolomite, and sulphate minerals in the aquifer. The irrigation water quality index divides groundwater in the study area into three zones, which signify low restriction and no restriction, except for a severe restriction in the southwestern part of the valley. Groundwater is generally suitable for irrigation across the valley. The entropy-weighted water quality index classifies groundwater as excellent and good quality for drinking. This study can provide crucial insights for authorities on groundwater suitability in Quetta Valley and similar regions worldwide. Abstract Climate change increases the risk of illness through rising temperature, severe precipitation and worst air pollution. This paper investigates how monthly excess mortality rate is associated with the increasing frequency and severity of extreme temperature in Canada during 2000-2020. The extreme associations were compared among four age groups across five sub-blocks of Canada based on the datasets of monthly T90 and T10, the two most representative indices of severe weather monitoring measures developed by the actuarial associations in Canada and US. We utilize a combined seasonal Auto-regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and bivariate Peaks-Over-Threshold (POT) method to investigate the extreme association via the extreme tail index $$\chi$$ χ and Pickands dependence function plots. It turns out that it is likely (more than 10%) to occur with excess mortality if there are unusual low temperature with extreme intensity (all $$\chi >0.1$$ χ > 0.1 except Northeast Atlantic (NEA), Northern Plains (NPL) and Northwest Pacific (NWP) for age group 0-44), while extreme frequent high temperature seems not to affect health significantly (all $$\chi \le 0.001$$ χ ≤ 0.001 except NWP). Particular attention should be paid to NWP and Central Arctic (CAR) since population health therein is highly associated with both extreme frequent high and low temperatures (both $$\chi =0.3182$$ χ = 0.3182 for all age groups). The revealed extreme dependence is expected to help stakeholders avoid significant ramifications with targeted health protection strategies from unexpected consequences of extreme weather events. The novel extremal dependence methodology is promisingly applied in further studies of the interplay between extreme meteorological exposures, social-economic factors and health outcomes.

Abstract Background Overweight and obesity are among the leading chronic diseases worldwide. Environmental phenols have been renowned as endocrine disruptors that contribute to weight changes; however, the effects of exposure to mixed phenols on obesity are not well established. Methods Using data from adults in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study examined the individual and combined effects of four phenols on obesity. A combination of traditional logistic regression and two mixed models (weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel-machine regression (BKMR)) were used together to assess the role of phenols in the development of obesity. The potential mediation of cholesterol on these effects was analyzed through a parallel mediation model. Abstract Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats and associated Cas protein (CRISPR–Cas), a powerful genome editing tool, has revolutionized gene function investigation and exhibits huge potential for clinical applications. CRISPR–Cas-mediated gene knockout has already become a routine method in research laboratories. However, in the last few years, accumulating evidences have demonstrated that genes knocked out by CRISPR–Cas may not be truly silenced. Functional residual proteins could be generated in such knockout organisms to compensate the putative loss of function, termed herein knockout escaping. In line with this, several CRISPR–Cas-mediated knockout screenings have discovered much less abnormal phenotypes than expected. How does knockout escaping happen and how often does it happen have not been systematically reviewed yet. Without knowing this, knockout results could easily be misinterpreted. In this review, we summarize these evidences and propose two main mechanisms allowing knockout escaping. To avoid the confusion caused by knockout escaping, several strategies are discussed as well as their advantages and disadvantages. On the other hand, knockout escaping also provides convenient tools for studying essential genes and treating monogenic disorders such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which are discussed in the end.

IntroductionThe thickening of radish taproots is primarily determined by secondary growth driven by the vascular cambium and is a highly intricate process regulated by plant hormones, transcription factors, and many metabolic pathways. Gibberellin (GA), a plant hormone associated with cell elongation, is essential in secondary growth. However, the mechanism through which exogenous GA3 regulates secondary taproot growth in radishes remains unclear.MethodsIntegrated morphological, anatomical, hormonal, and transcriptomic analyses of taproots in radishes treated with GA3 and its biosynthesis inhibitor paclobutrazol (PBZ) were performed to explore their effects on taproot secondary growth and key regulatory pathways.ResultsGA3 significantly hindered taproot thickening by inhibiting the formation and maintenance of the vascular cambium, and PBZ promoted root development by increasing root length rather than root diameter. Transcriptome analysis revealed 2,014, 948, and 1,831 differentially expressed genes identified from the control vs. GA3, control vs. PBZ, and GA3 vs. PBZ comparisons, respectively. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome pathway enrichment analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes were primarily involved in the biosyntheses of secondary metabolites and metabolic pathways. GA3 significantly increased the levels of endogenous indole-acetic acid and the expression of auxin synthesis and signal transduction genes.DiscussionExogenous GA3 significantly inhibited the expression of genes involved in the maintenance and differentiation of vascular cambium, including WOX14, ER/ERL1, and XCP2. Exogenous GA3 affects root thickening in radishes primarily by regulating hormone signal transduction pathways, vascular cambium activity, and substance and energy metabolisms. Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms underlying taproot thickening in radishes and provide a valuable gene database for future studies.

Summary: Cancer cachexia mouse models are needed to recapitulate the clinical features of patients with cachexia. Here, we present a protocol for the establishment and evaluation of cancer cachexia mouse models. We delineate the steps in preparing tumor cells for inoculation and surgical procedures. Summary: Background: Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability, and disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs) could represent a pivotal advancement in treatment. Identifying the potential of antidiabetic medications as DMOADs could impact patient care significantly. Methods: We designed a comprehensive analysis pipeline involving two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) (genetic proxies for antidiabetic drug targets), summary-based MR (SMR) (for mRNA), and colocalisation (for drug-target genes) to assess their causal relationship with 12 osteoarthritis phenotypes. Summary statistics from the largest genome-wide association meta-analysis (GWAS) of osteoarthritis and gene expression data from the eQTLGen consortium were utilised. Findings: Seven out of eight major types of clinical antidiabetic medications were identified, resulting in fourteen potential drug targets. Summary: Background: Synovitis has long been considered a common and modifiable inflammatory feature of osteoarthritis (OA), but current disease-modifying anti-inflammatory treatments appear ineffective in OA clinical trials. Elucidating the temporal relationship between synovitis and OA could provide insight into the role of synovitis in OA. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study based on the baseline and three-year follow-up data from the Xiangya Osteoarthritis (XO) Study. We assessed bidirectional associations between ultrasound-detected synovitis and radiographic and symptomatic OA at knee and hand sites using generalized estimating equations. Additionally, we performed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to test these hypotheses utilising whole-genome sequencing data in the XO population. Age, sex, body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, educational level, physical activity, and joint injury history were adjusted for these analyses. Findings: A total of 2211, 2420, 2280, and 2600 participants were enrolled for analyses of radiographic knee OA (RKOA), symptomatic knee OA (SKOA), radiographic hand OA (RHOA) and symptomatic hand OA (SHOA), respectively. The baseline synovitis (i.e., with synovitis vs. without synovitis) was associated with the incident RKOA (76/277 vs. 557/3674 knees), SKOA (49/387 vs. 287/4213 knees), RHOA (171/358 vs. 686/3664 hands) and SHOA (35/689 vs. 76/4327 hands), with adjusted odds ratio (aORs) of 2.2 (95% CI 1.7–3.1), 2.0 (1.3–2.9), 3.4 (2.7–4.4), and 2.4 (1.5–3.8), respectively. The baseline RKOA (with OA vs. without OA: 409/1246 vs. 481/3758 knees), SKOA (200/576 vs. 675/4356 knees), RHOA (192/778 vs. 410/3723 hands), and SHOA (41/162 vs. 548/4285 hands) were also associated with the incident synovitis, with aORs of 3.4 (95% CI 2.9–4.1), 2.7 (2.1–3.4), 2.3 (1.8–2.9) and 1.9 (1.2–2.8), respectively. Introduction: In recent years, the development of drug-eluting embolization beads that can be imaged has become a hot research topic in regard to meeting clinical needs. In our previous study, we successfully developed nano-assembled microspheres (NAMs) for multimodal imaging purposes. NAMs can not only be visualized under CT/MR/Raman imaging but can also load clinically required doses of doxorubicin. It is important to systematically compare the pharmacokinetics of NAMs with those of commercially available DC Beads and CalliSpheres to evaluate the clinical application potential of NAMs. Methods: In our study, we compared NAMs with two types of drug-eluting beads (DEBs) in terms of irinotecan, drug-loading capacity, release profiles, microsphere diameter variation, and morphological characteristics. Results: Our results indicate that NAMs had an irinotecan loading capacity similar to those of DC Beads and CalliSpheres but exhibited better sustained release in vitro. Conclusion: NAMs have great potential for application in transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for the treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastases.

Abstract Referring image segmentation identifies the object masks from images with the guidance of input natural language expressions. Nowadays, many remarkable cross‐modal decoder are devoted to this task. But there are mainly two key challenges in these models. One is that these models usually lack to extract fine‐grained boundary information and gradient information of images. The other is that these models usually lack to explore language associations among image pixels. In this work, a Multi‐scale Gradient balanced Central Difference Convolution (MG‐CDC) and a Graph convolutional network‐based Language and Image Fusion (GLIF) for cross‐modal encoder, called Graph‐RefSeg, are designed. Specifically, in the shallow layer of the encoder, the MG‐CDC captures comprehensive fine‐grained image features. It could enhance the perception of target boundaries and provide effective guidance for deeper encoding layers. In each encoder layer, the GLIF is used for cross‐modal fusion. It could explore the correlation of every pixel and its corresponding language vectors by a graph neural network. Since the encoder achieves robust cross‐modal alignment and context mining, a light‐weight decoder could be used for segmentation prediction. Extensive experiments show that the proposed Graph‐RefSeg outperforms the state‐of‐the‐art methods on three public datasets. Abstract Background Despite advances in medical imaging technology, the accurate preoperative prediction of lymph node status remains challenging in ovarian cancer. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using ultrasound-based radiomics combined with preoperative clinical characteristics to predict lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). Results Patients with 401 HGSOC lesions from two institutions were enrolled: institution 1 for the training cohort (n = 322) and institution 2 for the external test cohort (n = 79). Radiomics features were extracted from the three preoperative ultrasound images of each lesion. During feature selection, primary screening was first performed using the sample variance F-value, followed by recursive feature elimination (RFE) to filter out the 12 most significant features for predicting LNM. The radscore derived from these 12 radiomic features and three clinical characteristics were used to construct a combined model and nomogram to predict LNM, and subsequent 10-fold cross-validation was performed. In the test phase, the three models were tested with external test cohort. The radiomics model had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.899 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.864–0.933) in the training cohort and 0.855 (95%CI: 0.774–0.935) in the test cohort. The combined model showed good calibration and discrimination in the training cohort (AUC = 0.930) and test cohort (AUC = 0.881), which were superior to those of the radiomic and clinical models alone. Conclusions The nomogram consisting of the radscore and preoperative clinical characteristics showed good diagnostic performance in predicting LNM in patients with HGSOC. It may be used as a noninvasive method for assessing the lymph node status in these patients.

Abstract Accurate mitosis is coordinated by the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) through the mitotic checkpoint complex (MCC), which inhibits the anaphase-promoting complex or cyclosome (APC/C). As an essential regulator, Cdc20 promotes mitotic exit through activating APC/C and monitors kinetochore-microtubule attachment through activating SAC. Cdc20 requires multiple interactions with APC/C and MCC subunits to elicit these functions. Functionally assessing these interactions within cells requires efficient depletion of endogenous Cdc20, which is highly difficult to achieve by RNA interference (RNAi). Here we generated Cdc20 RNAi-sensitive cell lines which display a penetrant metaphase arrest by a single RNAi treatment. In this null background, we accurately measured the contribution of each known motif of Cdc20 on APC/C and SAC activation. The CRY box, a previously identified degron, was found critical for SAC by promoting MCC formation and its interaction with APC/C. These data reveal additional regulation within the SAC and establish a novel method to interrogate Cdc20.

Abstract Background Excessive energy intake in modern society has led to an epidemic surge in metabolic diseases, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, posing profound threats to women’s reproductive health. However, the precise impact and underlying pathogenesis of energy excess on female reproduction remain unclear. Methods We established an obese and hyperglycemic female mouse model induced by a high-fat and high-sucrose (HFHS) diet, then reproductive phenotypes of these mice were evaluated by examing sexual hormones, estrous cycles, and ovarian morphologies. Transcriptomic and precise metabolomic analyses of the ovaries were performed to compare the molecular and metabolic changes in HFHS mice. Finally, orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis was performed to compare the similarities of traits between HFHS mice and women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Results The HFHS mice displayed marked reproductive dysfunctions, including elevated serum testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels, irregular estrous cycles, and impaired folliculogenesis, mimicking the clinical manifestations of women with PCOS. Precise metabolomic overview suggested that HFHS diet disrupted amino acid metabolism in the ovaries of female mice. Additionally, transcriptional profiling revealed pronounced disturbances in ovarian steroid hormone biosynthesis and glucolipid metabolism in HFHS mice. Further multi-omics analyses unveiled prominent aberration in ovarian arginine biosynthesis pathway. Notably, comparisons between HFHS mice and a cohort of PCOS patients identified analogous reproductive and metabolic signatures. Conclusions Our results provide direct in vivo evidence for the detrimental effects of overnutrition on female reproduction and offer insights into the metabolic underpinnings of PCOS.

Against the backdrop of global climate change, climate change has become a major factor affecting the suitability of living environments. Therefore, in this study, based on multisource remote sensing data and geospatial analysis methods, we selected the annual land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in 2022 of the Chengdu–Chongqing urban agglomeration in China as driving indicators. By extracting three meteorological indicators of meteorological stations throughout the year (temperature [T], humidity [U], and wind speed [K]) in study area to construct the comfortable index of human body (IBC) to quantify regional climatic comfort. The results were as follows: First, the IBC averages were 75.620 (summer) > 60.448 (autumn) > 59.922 (spring) > 42.743 (winter), showing a spatial pattern of high values in the middle and low values on the four sides. T was the primary factor influencing annual IBC. Second, we discussed the relationship between IBC and NDVI, air quality index (AQI), LST, and relief degree of land surface (RDLS) under ordinary least square method, geographically weighted regression (GWR), and multiscale GWR (MGWR) models. LST is the most important factor affecting the spatial distribution of annual climate comfort, and the other four factors have different effects on IBC in different seasons. Third, the climate comfort of natural-type local climate zone (LCZ) was high in spring and summer, while the IBC of LCZ corresponding to building type was high in autumn and winter. This study is crucial for understanding the suitability of urban living environments and provides a reference for urban development planning.

Abstract Background Glycolysis is critical for harvesting abundant energy to maintain the tumor microenvironment in malignant tumors. Retinoic acid-related orphan receptor α (RORα) has been identified as a circadian gene. However, the association of glycolysis with RORα in regulating gastric cancer (GC) proliferation remains poorly understood. Methods Bioinformatic analysis and retrospective study were utilized to explore the role of RORα in cell cycle and glycolysis in GC. The mechanisms were performed in vitro and in vivo including colony formation, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), Epithelial- mesenchymal transition (EMT) and subcutaneous tumors of mice model assays. The key drives between RORα and glycolysis were verified through western blot and chip assays. Moreover, we constructed models of high proliferation and high glucose environments to verify a negative feedback and chemoresistance through a series of functional experiments in vitro and in vivo. Results RORα was found to be involved in the cell cycle and glycolysis through a gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) algorithm. GC patients with low RORα expression were not only associated with high circulating tumor cells (CTC) and high vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels. However, it also presented a positive correlation with the standard uptake value (SUV) level. Moreover, the SUVmax levels showed a positive linear relation with CTC and VEGF levels. In addition, RORα expression levels were associated with glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and phosphofructokinase-2/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFKFB3) expression levels, and GC patients with low RORα and high G6PD or low RORα and high PFKFB3 expression patterns had poorest disease-free survival (DFS). Functionally, RORα deletion promoted GC proliferation and drove glycolysis in vitro and in vivo. These phenomena were reversed by the RORα activator SR1078. Moreover, RORα deletion promoted GC proliferation through attenuating G6PD and PFKFB3 induced glycolytic activity in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, RORα was recruited to the G6PD and PFKFB3 promoters to modulate their transcription. Next, high proliferation and high glucose inhibited RORα expression, which indicated that negative feedback exists in GC. Moreover, RORα deletion improved fluorouracil chemoresistance through inhibition of glucose uptake. Conclusion RORα might be a novel biomarker and therapeutic target for GC through attenuating glycolysis.

Semantic segmentation is an essential task in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image interpretation. To address the issue of insufficient measurement ability of single-view similarity, an unsupervised semantic segmentation method for PolSAR images based on multiview similarity is proposed to estimate the number-of-classes (NoC) and perform classification. NoC estimation is commonly neglected in semantic segmentation methods, to ensure rationality, a NoC estimation method before clustering is proposed based on multiview polarimetric rotation domain features and the visual assessment of tendency method for PolSAR images without supervision. Then, the norm distance, geodesic distance, maximum likelihood distance, and generalized likelihood ratio test distance based on the statistical characteristics of PolSAR images are comprehensively analyzed. Various advantages of different distances are integrated to combine the multiview vector information and scattering information to construct six multikernel similarity matrices. Subsequently, the consensus similarity network fusion method is utilized to further strengthen the discriminative ability of the similarity matrices. In addition, efficient superpixel segmentation is also adopted to reduce the speckle noise. Finally, based on the estimated NoC and the fused similarity matrix, spectral clustering is utilized to obtain semantic segmentation results. Extensive experiments are conducted on two AIRSAR datasets and one Gaofen-3 dataset demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively combine the spatial neighborhood similarity information and achieve higher semantic segmentation accuracy.

Abstract Nocturnal hypertension is highly prevalent among Chinese and Asian populations, which is mainly attributed to high salt intake and high salt sensitivity. Nocturnal hypertension increases the risk of cardiovascular and all‐cause mortality, independent of daytime blood pressure (BP). However, it can usually be detected by 24‐h ambulatory BP monitoring, rather than routine office or home BP measurement, thus is often underdiagnosed in clinical practice. Currently, no specific guidance is available for the management of nocturnal hypertension in China or worldwide. Experts from the Chinese Hypertension League summarized the epidemiologic and pathophysiologic characteristics and clinical phenotype of nocturnal hypertension and provided consensus recommendations on optimal management of nocturnal hypertension, with the goal of maximally reducing the cardiovascular disease risks. In this consensus document, 24‐h ABPM is recommended for screening and diagnosis of nocturnal hypertension, especially in the elderly, patients with diabetes, chronic kidney diseases, obstructive sleep apnea and other conditions prone to high nocturnal BP. Lifestyle modifications including salt intake restriction, exercise, weight loss, sleep improvement, and mental stress relief are recommended. Long‐acting antihypertensive medications are preferred for nocturnal and 24‐h BP control. Some newly developed agents, renal denervation, and other device‐based therapy on nocturnal BP reduction are evaluated.

To achieve the uniform and fine-grained microstructures during thermal deformation of nickel-based superalloys, a novel two-stage deformation approach was employed, involving prior cold deformation treatment (PCDT) and subsequent thermal deformation. Experimental investigations concerning this two-stage deformation method were carried out on Ni80A superalloy, encompassing various combinations of cold and thermal compression parameters. The analysis of microstructures revealed that PCDT significantly enhances dynamic recrystallization (DRX) process, resulting in fine-grained microstructures during thermal compression and expanding the processing-parameter domains for grain refinement. To clarify the shift of DRX kinetics in thermal compression induced by PCDT, the DRX kinetics models considering this pre-treatment were derived. These models demonstrated a linear inverse correlation between the activation energy within DRX kinetics models and prior stored energy from PCDT. This suggested that PCDT promotes the DRX process by reducing the activation energy during thermal compression. Following, the kinetics curves depicting DRX volume fraction during thermal deformation were drawn. Results indicated that under an identical thermal compression condition, the kinetics curve shifts towards decreasing strain with increasing of prior cold deformation. Under various thermal compression conditions, these kinetics curves for Ni80A superalloy processed with PCDT get shifted to the direction of decreasing strain when compared to the alloy without PCDT. These shifts underscore a pronounced acceleration of DRX process induced by PCDT. Finally, a finite element model incorporating DRX kinetics models was developed to further illustrate the influence of PCDT on the shift of DRX in an upsetting process, which shows a promising potential for theoretical calculations.

Myanmar has experienced rapid socio-economic developments in recent decades, which have a greater impact on land cover change. Accurate long time series land cover datasets for Myanmar can be of great help in environmental protection and natural resource management. However, there are relatively few existing studies on long time series land cover datasets in Myanmar, and the acquisition of training samples within different time series is a big challenge. Therefore, this study used Google Earth Engine and Landsat imagery to produce a land cover dataset for every two years from 1990 to 2020 using a training sample migration framework. First, the differences in index change, spectral value change, and spectral shape change were used to determine whether the sample points had changed between the base year and the previous year, and then a small number of samples were manually selected. Second, the spectral features, index information, and texture information of the remote sensing images and the object-oriented segmentation method were used to obtain object-oriented multidimensional features. Finally, the random forest method was employed to train the samples of the previous year to obtain the land cover data of the previous year. The results of the study show that the average overall precision of the land cover classification results for Myanmar for 1990–2020 is 0.83 and Kappa is 0.79. In addition, the land cover classification results for Myanmar of 1990–2020 are significantly better than those of Globeland30-2020, FROM-GLC, and Dynamic World land cover, and comparing with these products showed good agreement.

China suffered from severe economic stagnation and urban decay during the COVID-19 pandemic, even public mental health was threatened. To create a favorable public consumption environment for enhancing the economic development, and meeting the needs of public life, the Chinese government has transformed and built a series of national night cultural and tourism consumption agglomeration areas as a new type of functional area in cities. The present study uses spatial analysis methods such as nearest neighbor index, nuclear density analysis, and coefficient of geographic association to quantitatively analyze the spatial distribution characteristics, equilibrium status, distribution density, and internal influential factors. The results showed the following. 1) The spatial distribution of night agglomeration areas in China is unbalanced, with a “rhombus-shaped structures, regional cluster distributions, and single nucleus aggregation points” combination of spatial distribution characteristics. 2) Eight different types of night agglomeration areas with distinctive features, large differences in spatial density, and significant geographical differentiation were identified. 3) The formation of spatial distribution patterns of night agglomeration areas was the result of the joint influence of five factors: resource endowment, economic level, transportation location, guest market, and policy environment. Understanding the current development of night agglomeration areas in China can lay the foundation for future in-depth studies on the spatiotemporal evolution of China's night tourism economy, as well as provide an urban renewal idea and experience for other global countries and regions that are facing economic crises, low urban land use efficiency, and obstruction in promoting new urbanization.

Abstract Aims To explore the effects of mother‐infant skin‐to‐skin contact on mother‐infant relationship and maternal psychology feelings. Design An exploratory qualitative research design using semi‐structured interviews. Methods A total of 64 mother‐infant pairs who met the inclusion criteria were selected as the experimental subjects to receive early and continuous intervention of mother‐infant skin‐to‐skin contact (SSC). On this basis, the qualitative research method of procedural grounded theory was used to conduct semi‐structured interviews with 18 puerperas before discharge from the hospital; the three‐level coding method of procedural grounded theory and Graneheim & Lundman qualitative content analysis method were combined to conductinterview content analysis in Nvivo 12 software, so as to extractcore categories and condense the theme. Results (1) The data were coded to extract five core categories, namely, birth experience, role transition, contact perception, mother‐infant connection and parental efficacy; (2) there were statistically significant differences in the number of coding reference points in five nodes before and after SSC, that is, mothers' positive feelings, newborns' physical characteristics noticed by their mothers, mother‐infant connection, role transition and birth experience. The number of coding reference points after SSC was statistically significant greater than before SSC; (3) The coding interview results showed that SSC could promote the sense of happiness in nurturing.

Study region: The Kunlun Mountains on Tibetan Plateau Study focus: The Tibetan Plateau, well known as Asian Water Tower, holds immense potential for the formation of glacial mineral water. The present research focuses on the hydrochemical and isotopic signatures and formation pattern of natural glacial mineral water in the alpine region on Tibetan Plateau. New hydrological insights for the region: The investigated mineral groundwater has outstanding water quality and slightly alkaline nature. It is with fresh hydrochemical facies of HCO3-Na·Ca type with total dissolved solids (TDS) in the range of 384–964 mg/L, and featured by notably rich strontium with the concentrations of 0.67–0.81 mg/L, far exceeding the recommended mineral water minimum threshold of 0.20 mg/L. The mineral groundwater is originated from the glacier meltwater of mountainous area with elevation over 4500 m. It subsequently infiltrates into the bedrock and move within the groundwater system with a residence time of approximately 52 years. Its hydrochemical constituents are naturally governed by water-rock interactions of silicates dissolution, cation exchange, and celestite and strontianite dissolution. A conceptual model is proposed to outline the formation pattern of glacial mineral water in alpine region on Tibetan Plateau. Findings of this study can fill the study gap regarding glacial mineral water on Tibetan Plateau, and further contribute to the future study and development of natural glacial mineral water in alpine regions worldwide.

This research focuses on achieving sustainable development in residential buildings with energy use. Under the influence of the energy crisis and related problems, research on residential buildings for less energy use has great potential. The literature review, according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, and including VOSviewer analysis, shows the research is increasing and meaningful. Solar Decathlon buildings are used as the main objects in this research. The fifth Solar Decathlon Europe energy use technologies are examined through onsite investigation and online searching. The Analytic Hierarchy Process method for multi-criteria decision analysis is used for sustainability assessment. Moreover, the Ladybug and ClimateStudio plugins simulated respectively the annual solar radiation and the best angle for receiving it. The main findings show that 34 kinds of technologies used in these buildings can be classified into two categories in three directions. Passive technologies should be applied and prioritized, but generating renewable energy is also important. Some infrequently used technologies are not insignificant. The research shows that the combination of technologies decides sustainability performance, but the quantity used does not. Furthermore, energy use also needs to be balanced and coordinated in combination with architectural aesthetics. This research on energy use in residential buildings is beneficial for achieving sustainable development.

The present research adopts ERP (Event-Related Potentials) technology to investigate whether there exists a concreteness effect in the processing of Chinese action verbs within metaphorical context. The mean amplitudes of N400 activated by action metaphors were compared with those activated by literal verbs and abstract verbs. The findings indicated that the Met verbs evoked a significantly larger N400 response at frontal brain region compared to the Abs verbs at a time window 200–500 ms, while the Met verbs elicited a notably greater N400 amplitude specifically at the posterior brain region in comparison to the Lit verbs at 300–500 ms time window. These results may be interpreted as indicating that the comprehension of the Met verbs is based on the concrete action semantics.

This research aims to estimate the relationship between green bond financing and the OECD nations' performance on the renewable energy indices. The study attempted to quantify the relationship between concepts by analyzing data from OECD countries for 2011–2019. Padroni unit root test, FMOLS, and DOLS method provide evidence for the study's results and convey broad policy implications on this important topic. The robustness is consequently examined through a long-term sensitivity analysis employing the FMOLS, and green bond financing nexus concerning the renewable energy indices is shown for comparison. The study showed that financing of green bonds had a predictable impact on renewable energy indices variables. Green bonds' unequal implications for renewable energy measures across the study period bear out this interpretation. The study's findings call for full suppot from government institutions, energy agencies, and departments to optimize energy efficiency, as green bond financing played a 32% role in OECD nation's renewable energy index constructions and increased per unit improvement in renewable energy sources by 9.6%. The research offers many policy recommendations for improving energy efficiency through renewable energy generation. Recent studies extend and contribute to the existing body of literature, although the scientific discussion on this subject matter still needs to be more detailed and understudied. Financial unpredictability may be transformed into a tremendous opportunity if the renewable energy business is appropriately regulated.

Abstract How long-term changes in surface topography relate to coseismic uplift is key to understanding the creation of high elevations along active mountain fronts, and remains hotly debated. Here we investigate this link by modeling the development of growth strata and the folding of river terraces above the Pishan duplex system in the southern Tarim Basin. We show that synchronous duplex thrusting of two neighboring faults with varying slip rates, associated with in-sequence propagation of the Pishan thrust system, is required to explain the presence of opposite-dipping panels of growth strata on the duplex front, and basinward migration of terrace fold crests. Importantly, this process of synchronous thrusting within the duplex reconciles the discrepancy between the deformation of terrace folds at the 10−1–100 million-year timescale and the maximum coseismic uplift of the 2015 Mw 6.4 Pishan earthquake on the frontal thrust. These results suggest that topography mismatch at different time scales can reflect the long-term kinematic evolution of fault systems. Thus, our study highlights the importance of characterizing complex subsurface fault kinematics for studying topographic growth, and motivates rethinking of the mountain building process in worldwide active fold-and-thrust belts, from short-term to long-term timescales.

Abstract Hand osteoarthritis is a common heterogeneous joint disorder with unclear molecular mechanisms and no disease-modifying drugs. In this study, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing analysis to compare the cellular composition and subpopulation-specific gene expression between cartilage with macroscopically confirmed osteoarthritis (n = 5) and cartilage without osteoarthritis (n = 5) from the interphalangeal joints of five donors. Of 105 142 cells, we identified 13 subpopulations, including a novel subpopulation with inflammation-modulating potential annotated as inflammatory chondrocytes. Fibrocartilage chondrocytes exhibited extensive alteration of gene expression patterns in osteoarthritic cartilage compared with nonosteoarthritic cartilage. Both inflammatory chondrocytes and fibrocartilage chondrocytes showed a trend toward increased numbers in osteoarthritic cartilage. In these two subpopulations from osteoarthritic cartilage, the ferroptosis pathway was enriched, and expression of iron overload-related genes, e.g., FTH1, was elevated. To verify these findings, we conducted a Mendelian randomization study using UK Biobank and a population-based cross-sectional study using data collected from Xiangya Osteoarthritis Study. Genetic predisposition toward higher expression of FTH1 mRNA significantly increased the risk of hand osteoarthritis (odds ratio = 1.07, 95% confidence interval: 1.02–1.11) among participants (n = 332 668) in UK Biobank. High levels of serum ferritin (encoded by FTH1), a biomarker of body iron overload, were significantly associated with a high prevalence of hand osteoarthritis among participants (n = 1 241) of Xiangya Osteoarthritis Study (P-for-trend = 0.037). In conclusion, our findings indicate that inflammatory and fibrocartilage chondrocytes are key subpopulations and that ferroptosis may be a key pathway in hand osteoarthritis, providing new insights into the pathophysiology and potential therapeutic targets of hand osteoarthritis.

Abstract Background Huazhuo Tiaozhi granule (HTG) is a herbal medicine formula widely used in clinical practice for hypolipidaemic effects. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying dyslipidaemia treatment have not been well elucidated. Results A significant reduction in the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was observed in the serum of patients with dyslipidaemia after HTG treatment, without disruption in the levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine (Cr). The dyslipidaemia rat model was induced by a high-fat diet and treated with Xuezhikang (0.14 g/kg/d) or HTG (9.33 g crude herb/kg/day) by gavage for 8 weeks. Body weight and liver index were markedly decreased in dyslipidaemic rats after treatment with Xuezhikang or HTG. HTG administration markedly ameliorated hyperlipidaemia by decreasing the levels of TC and LDL-C in serum and hepatic lipid accumulation. In vitro, lipid accumulation in LO2 and HepG2 cells was alleviated by serum treatment with HTG. High lactylation was observed in 198 proteins, including lactylation of histone H2B (K6), H4 (K80). Deep sequencing of microRNAs showed that miR-155-5p was significantly downregulated. Conclusions This study demonstrates that HTG is an effective and safe formula for treating dyslipidaemia, which promotes lactylation in hepatocytes, and the retardation of miR-155-5p biogenesis. Computer-aided brain tumor segmentation using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is of great significance for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients. Recently, U-Net has received widespread attention as a milestone in automatic brain tumor segmentation. Following its merits and motivated by the success of the attention mechanism, this work proposed a novel mixed attention U-Net model, i.e., MAU-Net, which integrated the spatial-channel attention and self-attention into a single U-Net architecture for MRI brain tumor segmentation. Specifically, MAU-Net embeds Shuffle Attention using spatial-channel attention after each convolutional block in the encoder stage to enhance local details of brain tumor images. Meanwhile, considering the superior capability of self-attention in modeling long-distance dependencies, an enhanced Transformer module is introduced at the bottleneck to improve the interactive learning ability of global information of brain tumor images. MAU-Net achieves enhancing tumor, whole tumor and tumor core segmentation Dice values of 77.88/77.47, 90.15/90.00 and 81.09/81.63% on the brain tumor segmentation (BraTS) 2019/2020 validation datasets, and it outperforms the baseline by 1.15 and 0.93% on average, respectively. Besides, MAU-Net also demonstrates good competitiveness compared with representative methods.

Abstract Background Studies indicate that treating periodontitis may benefit glycemic control among people with diabetes. It is unclear whether oral self-care such as flossing may reduce risk for periodontitis and improve glycemic control among people with diabetes. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between oral care, specifically, flossing and preventive dental care, with periodontitis and glycemic control, among US dentate adults with diabetes. Methods We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011–2014 for 892 participants aged 30 years and older with diabetes who completed the periodontal examination and lab test for hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Sampling weights were applied. Multivariable logistic regression and multivariable linear modeling were performed to examine the associations of flossing and preventive dental services on periodontal health and HbA1c levels, respectively, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviors, and other risk factors. Abstract Urban parks can effectively reduce surface temperatures, which is an important strategic approach to reducing the urban heat island effect. Quantifying the cooling effect of urban parks and identifying their main internal influencing factors is important for improving the urban thermal environment, achieving maximum cooling benefits, and improving urban sustainability. In this study, we extracted data frobut this is often unrealisticm 28 urban parks in Zhengzhou, China. We combined multivariate data, such as Landsat 8 data, to retrieve the land surface temperature (LST), extract the park interior landscape, and quantify the cooling effect using three cooling indices: park cooling distance (L ∆max), temperature difference magnitude (∆T max), and temperature gradient (G temp). Furthermore, the relationship between the internal landscape characteristics of the park and the average LST and cooling indices of the park was analyzed. The results showed that different buffer ranges affect the LST-distance fitting results of urban parks, and a 300-m buffer zone is the optimal fitting interval. However, specific parks should be analyzed to select the optimal buffer range and reduce the cooling index calculation errors. Additionally, the mean values of LST, ∆T max, L ∆max, and G temp for the 28 parks in Zhengzhou were 34.11, 3.22 °C, 194.02 m, and 1.78 °C/hm, respectively. Park perimeter (PP), park area, internal green area (GA), and landscape shape index (LSI) were both significantly correlated with ∆T max and the main factors associated with maintaining a low LST in parks. L∆max was mainly affected by the GA, LSI, and perimeter-area ratio, whereas G temp was positively correlated with PP. Finally, the threshold value of efficiency for parks in Zhengzhou was 0.83 ha, and comprehensive parks showed optimal cooling in every aspect.

Abstract P2X receptors are ATP-activated cation channels, and the P2X4 subtype plays important roles in the immune system and the central nervous system, particularly in neuropathic pain. Therefore, P2X4 receptors are of increasing interest as potential drug targets. Here, we report the cryo-EM structures of the zebrafish P2X4 receptor in complex with two P2X4 subtype-specific antagonists, BX430 and BAY-1797. Both antagonists bind to the same allosteric site located at the subunit interface at the top of the extracellular domain. Structure-based mutational analysis by electrophysiology identified the important residues for the allosteric inhibition of both zebrafish and human P2X4 receptors. Structural comparison revealed the ligand-dependent structural rearrangement of the binding pocket to stabilize the binding of allosteric modulators, which in turn would prevent the structural changes of the extracellular domain associated with channel activation. Furthermore, comparison with the previously reported P2X structures of other subtypes provided mechanistic insights into subtype-specific allosteric inhibition.

FeGe is a kagome material that exhibits both charge density wave (CDW) order and magnetic order. The CDW order is developed deep inside the A-type antiferromagnetic phase in FeGe, providing a unique platform to investigate the interplay between CDW and magnetism. However, the driving mechanism of the CDW phase remains controversial. In this work, we performed high-pressure electrical transport and x-ray diffraction measurements combined with density-functional theory calculations to investigate the evolution of the CDW of FeGe under pressure. In contrast to conventional CDW materials, the CDW transition temperature of FeGe increases with increasing pressure, indicating the unconventional mechanism of CDW in this material. More interestingly, another possible CDW with a sqrt[3]×sqrt[3]×6 superlattice emerges above 20 GPa, which may be explained by the calculated metastable CDW states under high pressure. These observations exclude the possibility of Van Hove singularities nesting as a CDW driving force. Our results unveil versatile CDW states and broaden the study of intertwined electronic states in the magnetic kagome metal FeGe.

Flash droughts adversely affect agriculture and ecosystems due to their rapid depletion of soil moisture (SM). However, few studies assessed the impacts of flash droughts on crops, especially in the agricultural regions of southern China. In this study, we investigated flash droughts using crop root zone SM in the main agricultural region of southern China. Additionally, solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) served as a vegetation index to explore the crop response to flash droughts. The results reveal that the SIF exhibited an upward trend from 2001 to 2020 in the study area, indicating the enhanced photosynthetic capacity of crops and subsequent yield improvement. Hotspots of flash drought frequency occurred in the eastern areas of both the upper and lower Yangtze River regions, specifically in areas where the most rapid types of flash droughts were particularly prevalent. The average duration of flash droughts in the southern agricultural region was 6–12 pentads, a sufficiently long duration to significantly hinder crop photosynthesis, resulting in negative SIF standardized anomalies. In order to achieve the purpose of efficiently removing lead and cadmium as the main heavy metals from wastewater, this paper explores the adsorption properties of cadmium ions and lead ions on biochar under different modified conditions prepared from corn stalks as raw materials and potassium phosphate as surface modifiers. Before preparing biochar (BC), the mass ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 (corn stalks to potassium phosphate) were used for pre-modification, and the oxygen-restricted pyrolysis processes of 350 °C, 550 °C and 750 °C were used for treatment. The study discussed the individual and composite adsorption effects of biochar on Pb2+ and Cd2+ under different conditions. The experimental results show that phosphorus modification has changed the physical and chemical properties of the original biochar. Among them, the biochar (2PBC550) with an impregnation ratio of 1:2 and a pyrolysis temperature of 550 °C (2PBC550) exhibits excellent adsorption properties. When the pH of the simulated wastewater is 5 and the amount of adsorbent is 30 mg·L−1, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb2+ and Cd2+ is 145.48 mg·g−1 and 14.533 mg·g−1, respectively, which are 6.46 times and 3.67 times of the original biochar. The Pb2+ and Cd2+ adsorption data of 2PBC550 fit well with the quasi-secondary dynamics and Langmuir isothermal models, indicating that the adsorption process is controlled by single-layer chemical adsorption. In the composite metal system of Pb2+ and Cd2+, 2PBC550 exhibits a stronger affinity for Pb2+ than Cd2+. Through the analysis of characterization methods such as SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS, it is proved that the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by 2PBC550 is due to precipitation, complexation and π electron interaction. Therefore, 2PBC550 shows great application potential in the repair of wastewater containing Pb2+ or Cd2+.

The implementation of a controllable sterility strategy is crucial for the commercialization of precise trait improvements in farmed fish using genome editing and sustainable development of fisheries. Our previous research has demonstrated that females deficient in pituitary gonadotropin luteinizing hormone β-subunit (lhβ) or gonadal steroidogenesis gene steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (star) exhibit sterility due to impaired oocyte maturation and ovulation. Nevertheless, the effective restoration of fertility in lhβ- or star-deficient females remains unsolved. This study has discovered that the administration of exogenous 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) at 100 and 300 μg/L for 6 h (from 02:00 to 08:00 a.m.) effectively restores the fertility of lhβ- or star-deficient females. Fertilized eggs from these mutant females can be raised without noticeable developmental defects for up to 3 weeks post-fertilization (wpf) compared to the wild-type (WT) control zebrafish. The increased expression levels of adamts9 and adam8b in lhβ- or star-deficient zebrafish females treated with DHP demonstrate a positive correlation with oocyte maturation and ovulation restoration. In contrast, exogenous DHP administration did not rescue the sterility phenotype observed in progesterone receptor (pgr)-deficient females. Building on our recent success in generating an all-female carp population through cytochrome P450, family 17, subfamily A, polypeptide 1 (cyp17a1)-depletion, our research presents a promising and effective strategy for an “off-on” switch for managing fertility in genome-edited cyprinids. The strategy would offer practical guidance and theoretical justification for developing “controllable fertility” in all-female fish, which would support the sustainable development of fisheries by promoting the use of novel biotechnologies in aquaculture in an eco-friendly manner.

Abstract Background With the increasing aging population, dementia has become a significant socioeconomic burden. However, the effects of albumin on delayed recall (DR) impairment remain unclear, and there are limited reports on sex and race differences in this relationship. This study aimed to investigate the association between albumin levels and DR impairment in older adults. Methods A total of 1507 normal cognitive function and 553 DR impairment from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2014 were included in this cross‐sectional analysis. Participants aged 60 years and above were assessed using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease DR (CERAD‐DR) test to evaluate cognitive function. Participants were categorized into DR impairment and normal cognitive function groups according to their CERAD‐DR scores. Logistic regression analyses, generalized additive models, and fitted smoothing curves were utilized for data analysis. Results After adjusting for potential confounders, a negative association was found between albumin levels and cognitive function (odds ratio [OR] = 0.60, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.41–0.87). Subgroup analysis stratified by sex, race/ethnicity, and age revealed that the negative association remained significant in men (OR = 0.53, 95%CI 032–0.87), Blacks (OR = 0.35, 95%CI 0.17–0.74), and the age group of 60–70 years (OR = 0.48, 95%CI 0.28–0.81). However, no significant association was observed in women (OR = 0.72, 95%CI 0.41–1.28), whites (OR = 0.58, 95%CI 0.31–1.07), or Mexican Americans (OR = 1.11, 95%CI 0.35–3.46), as well as the age group of 71–80 years (OR = 0.62, 95%CI 0.37–1.03). Conclusions Our study suggests that elevated albumin levels are associated with a decreased incidence of cognitive function impairment, particularly in older men and Blacks. This finding indicates that maintaining high levels of albumin may be beneficial for cognitive function in older adults.

BackgroundThe fundamental medical insurance fund, often referred to as the public’s “life-saving fund,” plays a crucial role in both individual well-being and the pursuit of social justice. Medicare fraudulent claims reduce “life-saving money” to “Tang’s monk meat”, undermining social justice and affecting social stability.MethodsWe utilized crawler technology to gather textual data from 215 cases involving fraudulent health insurance claims. Simultaneously, statistical data spanning 2018 to 2021 was collected from the official websites of the China Medical Insurance Bureau and Anhui Medical Insurance Bureau. The collected data underwent comprehensive analysis through Excel, SPSS 26.0 and R4.2.1. Differential Auto-Regressive Moving Average Model (ARIMA (p, d, q)) was used to fit the fund safety forecast model, and test the predictive validity of the forecast model on the fund security data from July 2021 to October 2023 (the fund security data of Anhui Province from September 2021 to October 2023).ResultsThe outcomes revealed that fraudulent claims by health insurance stakeholders adversely impact the equity of health insurance funds. Furthermore, the risk management practices of Medicare fund administrators influence the publication of fraudulent claims cases. Notably, differences among Medicare stakeholders were observed in the prevalence of fraudulent claims. Additionally, effective governance of fraudulent claims risks was found to have a positive impact on the overall health of healthcare funds. Moreover, the predictive validity of the forecast model on the national and Anhui province’s fund security data was 92.86% and 100% respectively.ConclusionWe propose four recommendations for the governance of health insurance fraudulent claims risk behaviors. These recommendations include strategies such as “combatting health insurance fraudulent claims to preserve the fairness of health insurance funds”, “introducing initiatives for fraud risk governance and strengthening awareness of the rule of law”, “focusing on designated medical institutions and establishing a robust long-term regulatory system”, and “adapting to contemporary needs while maintaining a focus on long-term regulation”.

This study aimed to determine the effect of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) analog (D-cloprostenol sodium and DL-cloprostenol sodium) administration on the milk yield of multiparous sows (MS) and piglet growth performance. In total, 320 Landrace×Yorkshire parturient MS were randomly divided into three groups on day 115 of pregnancy: without treatment (N = 50), with 75 μg D-cloprostenol sodium (N = 137), and with 200 μg DL-cloprostenol sodium (N = 133). After delivery, the sows treated with D-cloprostenol sodium and DL-cloprostenol sodium were randomly allocated into three subgroups, respectively: (i) no additional treatment after farrowing; (ii) administration of cloprostenol sodium at 3 h and 5 days after farrowing; and (iii) administration of cloprostenol sodium at 3 h, 5 days, and 10 days after farrowing. Cloprostenol sodium effectively induced sows to synchronize parturition approximately 23 h after administration and increased the daytime delivery rates (p 0.05). In summary, cloprostenol sodium could enhance the reproductive performance of MS, particularly in terms of lactation performance. Additionally, the effect of quartic injections of D-cloprostenol sodium was the most pronounced.

Objectives The incidence of gout in the UK appears to have declined since 2013; however, whether such a trend occurred across participants born in different years (ie, birth cohort) is unknown. We aimed to examine the effects of the birth cohort on gout incidence using an age-period-cohort (APC) model.Design Cross-sectional study.Setting Nationwide data from the UK primary care database.Participants Individuals between 30 and 89 years of age were included. We excluded individuals who had gout history when entering the database and individuals with less than 1 year of continuous follow-up between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2019.Primary and secondary outcome measures Gout was identified using READ codes assigned by general practitioners. The incidence of gout between 1999–2013 and 2011–2019 was analysed with APC model.Results The incidence of gout between 1999 and 2013 increased with birth cohorts. Businesses today face a strong call for implementing corporate social responsibilities (CSR) subject to stakeholders' multiple expectations on the creation of long-term value. However, a vast majority of companies have struggled with the challenge of stakeholder management in CSR fulfillment, giving rise to a waste of enterprise resources. This study aims to map out stakeholders' relationships in CSR fulfillment to underscore stakeholder management. 253 CSR reports published by Chinese listed construction companies from 2010 to 2021 were collected and analyzed to map the stakeholders' relationships. The results show that construction companies usually stress the importance of corporate governance and workers interest, followed by construction quality and environmental preservation in implementing CSR. They adopt three types of stakeholder management approaches: coercive, cooperative, and coordinated approaches. The study presents the latest effort in managing stakeholders' relationships in the domain of CSR research. It favors construction firms to reconsider CSR activities from the stakeholder management perspective.
