This paper presents a systematic investigation and demonstration of a K-band circularly polarized liquid-crystal-based phased array (LCPA), including the design, over-the-air (OTA) in-array calibration, and experimental validation. The LCPA contains 16 phase-shifting radiating channels, each consisting of a circularly polarized stacked patch antenna and a liquid-crystal-based phase shifter (LCPS) based on a loaded differential line structure. Thanks to its slow-wave properties, the LCPS exhibits a maximum phase-shifting range of more than 360° with a figure of merit of 78.3(° )·dB−1 based on a liquid crystal layer with a thickness of only 5 μm. Furthermore, an automatic OTA calibration based on a state ergodic method is proposed, which enables the extraction of the phase–voltage curve of every individual LCPA channel. The proposed LCPA is manufactured and characterized with a total profile of only 1.76 mm, experimentally demonstrating a scanned circularly polarized beam from −40° to +40° with a measured peak gain of 12.5 dBic and a scanning loss of less than 2.5 dB. The bandwidth of the LCPA, which satisfies the requirements of port reflection (|S11|) < −15 dB, an axial ratio (AR) < 3 dB, beam squinting < 3°, and a gain variation < 2.2 dB, spans from 25.5 to 26.0 GHz. The total efficiency is about 34%, which represents a new state of the art. The use of the demonstrated low-profile LCPA to support circularly polarized scanning beams, along with the systematic design and calibration methodology, holds potential promise for a variety of millimeter-wave applications.

Coriolopsis spp. are wood-decaying fungi that inhabit forests. They are mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. Strain Epi910 was isolated from the asymbiotically germinated protocorm of Epidendrum sp. and identified as Coriolopsis strumosa. Symbiotic germination and high-throughput sequencing of the endophytic fungal communities of different parts were performed to characterize the function and spatial distribution of the Epi910 isolate. Under symbiotic germination, Epi910 promoted seed germination and seedling formation as an endophytic native fungus of Epidendrum sp. Endophytic fungal communities from seven different parts of Epidendrum sp. were characterized. In total, 645 OTUs were identified; 30 OTUs were shared among all seven parts. The internal transcribed spacer sequence of Epi910 was identical to that of a dominant shared OTU (OTU6). The relative abundance of OTU6 in the seven parts was identified as follows: capsule pericarp > seed > root > asymbiotically germinated protocorm > epiphytic root > ovary > rachis. Our results suggest that the isolate belonging to Coriolopsis strumosa could promote the germination of Epidendrum sp. There may, therefore, be endophytic fungi other than common orchid mycorrhizal fungi with the ability to enhance germination in orchids.

Objective: To explore the anti-aging effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and the underlying mechanisms based on a Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) model. Methods: The anti-aging activity of CGA was studied based on the body length, exercise behavior, lipofuscin content, antioxidative stress ability, swallowing frequency, body-bending frequency, and head-swinging ability of C. elegans. Through DAF-16 nuclear translocation and SOD-3-GFP fluorescence experiments, the effects of CGA on ROS levels, antioxidant enzyme activities, MDA content, mutant-strain lifespan, and anti-aging molecular signaling pathways were explored, as well as the underlying mechanisms. The Industrial Product Service System (IPS2) is considered a sustainable and efficient business model, which has been gradually popularized in manufacturing fields since it can reduce costs and satisfy customization. However, a comprehensive design method for IPS2 is absent, particularly in terms of requirement perception, resource allocation, and service activity arrangement of specific industrial fields. Meanwhile, the planning and scheduling of multiple parallel service activities throughout the delivery of IPS2 are also in urgent need of resolution. This paper proposes a method containing service order design, service resource configuration, and service flow modeling to establish an IPS2 for robot-driven sanding processing lines. In addition, we adopt the modified Deep Q-network (DQN) to realize a scheduling scheme aimed at minimizing the total tardiness of multiple parallel service flows. Finally, our industrial case study validates the effectiveness of our methods for IPS2 design, demonstrating that the modified deep reinforcement learning algorithm reliably generates robust scheduling schemes.

BackgroundNeonatal resuscitation is an important skillset for clinicians attending deliveries. Accredited neonatal resuscitation training is not obligatory in most training centers of standardized medical residency programs before 2022 in China. We investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of neonatal resuscitation simulation training (neo-RST) in residents in Shenzhen, China.MethodsFour two-day neo-RST workshops were conducted in the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital and Shenzhen Health Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center in 2020–2021. The workshops had Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)® update, skill stations and simulation practice with debriefing. Each participant had the integrated skill station assessment (ISSA) at the end of workshop. Participants of workshops included residents of different disciplines and health care providers (HCPs) of neonatal and obstetrical departments. We compared demographic characteristics, neonatal resuscitation knowledge before training, ISSA overall and categorical scores on skill sets between residents and HCPs.ResultsIn 2020–2021, 4 neo-RST workshops were conducted with 48 residents and 48 HCPs. The residents group had less working experience, less prior experience in neo-RST and lower neonatal resuscitation knowledge scores than those of HCPs group. After the workshop, residents had higher overall ISSA score than that of HCPs group (90.2 ± 5.9 vs. 86.3 ± 6.6%, P = 0.003, respectively). While most studies of mechanical stimulation of cells are focused on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) systems, it is rare to study the effects of cyclic stretching on cells under a quasi-3D microenvironment as a linkage between 2D and 3D. Herein, we report a new method to prepare an elastic membrane with topographic microstructures and integrate the membrane into a microfluidic chip. The fabrication difficulty lay not only in the preparation of microstructures but also in the alignment and bonding of the patterned membrane to other layers. To resolve the problem, we designed and assembled a fast aligner that is cost-effective and convenient to operate. To enable quasi-3D microenvironment of cells, we fabricated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microwell arrays (formed by micropillars of a few microns in diameter) with the microwell diameters close to the cell sizes. An appropriate plasma treatment was found to afford a coating-free approach to enable cell adhesion on PDMS. We examined three types of cells in 2D, quasi-3D, and 3D microenvironments; the cell adhesion results showed that quasi-3D cells behaved between 2D and 3D cells. We also constructed transgenic human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs); under cyclic stretching, the visualizable live hMSCs in microwells were found to orientate differently from in a 3D Matrigel matrix and migrate differently from on a 2D flat plate. This study not only provides valuable tools for microfabrication of a microfluidic device for cell studies, but also inspires further studies of the topological effects of biomaterials on cells.

Stimuli responsive self‐folding structures with 2D layered materials (2DLMs) are important for flexible electronics, wearables, biosensors, bioelectronics, and photonics. Previously, strategies have been developed to self‐fold 2D materials to form various robots, sensors, and actuators. Still, there are limitations with scalability and a lack of design tools to obtain complex structures for reversible actuation, high integration, and reliable function. Herein, a mass‐producible strategy for creating monolayer graphene‐based reversible self‐folding structures using either gradient or differentially cross‐linked films of a negative epoxy photoresist widely used in microfluidics and micromechanical systems, namely, SU8 is demonstrated. Wafer‐scale patterning and integration of complex and functional devices in the form of rings, polyhedra, flowers, and bidirectionally folded origami birds are achieved. Also, gold (Au) electrodes to realize functional graphene–Au Schottky interfaces with enhanced photoresponse and 3D angle sensitive detection are integrated. The experiments are guided and rationalized by theoretical methods including coarse‐grained models, specifically developed for the tunable mechanics of this photoresist that simulate the folding dynamics, and finite element method (FEM) electromagnetic simulations. This work suggests a comprehensive framework for the rational design and scalable fabrication of complex 3D self‐actuating optical and electronic devices through the folding of 2D monolayer graphene.

This paper mainly studies fault-tolerant control for a class of semi-linear fractional-order multi-agent systems with diffusion characteristics, where the actuator fault is considered. The adaptive fault-tolerant control protocol based on the adjacency relationship of agents is firstly designed, which can adjust the coupling gain online through the adaptive mechanism. Using the Lyapunov stability theory, the adaptive fault-tolerant control protocol can drive the agents to achieve consensus for leader-following and leaderless cases. Finally, the simulation experiment is carried out, showing the effectiveness of the proposed theory.

BackgroundBrucellosis is a zoonotic disease that threatens public health and creates an economic burden. Unfortunately, it is often overlooked in developing countries, with misdiagnosis causing negative impacts on those with low income. Although the symptoms of brucellosis are commonly reported as fever and fatigue, rare pulmonary, and psychiatric involvements should also be considered. We present the first brucellosis patient in China with multiple pulmonary nodules and depression. Furthermore, this report highlights the importance of collecting patient history in epidemic areas of brucellosis.Case presentationWe report the case of a 40-year-old woman with intermittent fever for 2 months and gradually accompanied by chills, dry cough, arthralgia, and fatigue. The patient was also diagnosed with depression after fever. She received symptomatic treatment at a regional hospital; however, there was no significant symptom relief. She suddenly developed hemoptysis 1 day prior to arrival at our hospital, where we discovered that her liver, spleen, neck, and axillary lymph nodes were enlarged, and there were multiple nodules in both lungs. The patient was eventually diagnosed with brucellosis after the serum agglutination test and received antibiotic therapy, which provided symptom relief.ConclusionThis report describes a case of brucellosis with uncommon multipulmonary nodules and depression in China. This study has widened the evidence of respiratory involvement due to brucellosis. Second, it demonstrates the importance of collecting a comprehensive medical history, especially in epidemic areas. In conclusion, for febrile patients with pulmonary nodules and depression, especially in endemic areas, brucellosis should be considered.

Remote monitoring and maintenance are important for improving the performance of production systems. However, existing studies on this topic usually focus on the monitoring and maintenance of the working conditions of the equipment and pay relatively less attention to the processing craft and processing quality. In addition, as far as we know, there are relatively few industrial case studies on the real applications of remote monitoring and maintenance systems that include both conventional and advanced maintenance techniques under the context of Industry 4.0. Addressing these issues, an industrial case study on the monitoring and maintenance service system for a robot-driven carbon block polishing service system is presented, including its application background and engineering problems, software/hardware architecture and running logic, the monitoring and maintenance-related enabling techniques, and the configuration and operation workflows of the system in the form of screenshots of the functional WebAPPs of the software system. The case study can provide real examples and references for the industrial application of remote monitoring and maintenance service systems on industrial product service systems under the context of Industry 4.0. Advanced techniques such as the Industrial Internet of Things, digital twins, deep learning, and edge/cloud/fog computing have been applied to the system.

Abstract The sensory dominance effect refers to the phenomenon that one sensory modality more frequently receives preferential processing (and eventually dominates consciousness and behavior) over and above other modalities. On the other hand, hand dominance is an innate aspect of the human motor system. To investigate how the sensory dominance effect interacts with hand dominance, we applied the adapted Colavita paradigm and recruited a large cohort of healthy right-handed participants (n = 119). While the visual dominance effect in bimodal trials was observed for the whole group (n = 119), about half of the right-handers (48%) showed a visual preference, i.e., their dominant hand effect manifested in responding to the visual stimuli. By contrast, 39% of the right-handers exhibited an auditory preference, i.e., the dominant hand effect occurred for the auditory responses. The remaining participants (13%) did not show any dominant hand preference for either visual or auditory responses. For the first time, the current behavioral data revealed that human beings possess a characteristic and persistent preferential link between different sensory modalities and the dominant vs. non-dominant hand. Whenever this preferential link between the sensory and the motor system was adopted, one dominance effect peaks upon the other dominance effect’s best performance.

For rapidly developing smart manufacturing, Industrial ICT Systems (IICTSs) have become critical to safe and reliable production, and effective monitoring of complex IICTSs in practice is necessary but challenging. Since such monitoring data are organized generally as semi-structural logs, log parsing, the fundamental premise of advanced log analysis, has to be comprehensively addressed. Because of unrealistic assumptions, high maintenance costs, and the incapability of distinguishing homologous logs, existing log parsing methods cannot simultaneously fulfill the requirements of complex IICTSs simultaneously. Focusing on these issues, we present LogParser, a deep learning-based framework for both online and offline parsing of IICTS logs. For performance evaluation, we conduct extensive experiments based on monitoring log sets from 18 different real-world systems. The results demonstrate that LogParser achieves at least a 14.5% higher parsing accuracy than the state-of-the-art methods.

Microneedles have been used in various applications in biomedical engineering, including drug delivery, biosensing, and vaccine delivery. In this study, we develop a novel protocol to fabricate silk fibroin/off-stoichiometry thiol-ene (OSTE) hybrid microneedle array patches. Silk fibroin, as a natural biomaterial, has been proven to be suitable as a drug carrier. Firstly, drug (we use insulin in this experiment) dissolved in silk fibroin solution is deposited on a microneedle mold and dried thoroughly. After that, silk fibroin needle tips are formed on the OSTE base by replica molding. We investigated the influence of the silk fibroin concentration on the length of silk needle tips and found that the silk concentration had a small influence on the tip length. We also tested the mechanical strength of the microneedles by inserting them into gelatin gel for dummy drug delivery tests. Such composite structures have the potential to increase the delivery efficiency by delivering the whole silk tip into the dermis.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the main complications of diabetic patients and the major reason for the high prevalence of heart failure in diabetic patients. Fufang Xueshuantong (FXST) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula commonly used in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and stable angina pectoris. However, the role of FXST in DCM has not yet been clarified. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of FXST on diabetic myocardial lesions and reveal its molecular mechanism. The rats were intraperitoneally injected with 65 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) to induce diabetes mellitus (DM). DM rats were given saline or FXST. The rats in the control group were intraperitoneally injected with an equal amount of sodium citrate buffer and gavaged with saline. After 12 weeks, echocardiography, heart weight index (HWI), and myocardial pathological changes were determined. The expression of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1), collagen I, and collagen III was examined using immunofluorescence staining and western blot. The expressions of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway-related proteins and mRNA were detected by western blot and real-time PCR. The results showed that FXST significantly improved cardiac function, ameliorated histopathological changes, and decreased HWI in the DM rats. FXST significantly inhibited the expression of myocardial TGF-β1, collagen I, and collagen III in DM rats. Furthermore, FXST significantly inhibited the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Taken together, FXST has a protective effect on DCM, which might be mediated by suppressing the Wnt/β-catenin pathway.

Monitoring and maintaining equipment and production lines ensure stable production by detecting and resolving abnormalities immediately. In the Industrial Internet, operational technology and advanced information technology are fused to improve the digitalization and intelligence of monitoring and maintenance. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of monitoring and maintenance of equipment and production lines on the Industrial Internet. Firstly, a brief review of its architecture is given, and a reference architecture is summarized accordingly, clarifying the key enabling technologies involved. These key technologies are data collection technologies, edge computing, advanced communication technologies, fog computing, big data, artificial intelligence, and digital twins. For each of the key technologies, we provide a detailed literature review of their state-of-the-art advances. Finally, we discuss the challenges that it currently faces and give some suggestions for future research directions.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignancies and has the second highest lethal rate in the world; thus, finding new medicines with high potency and low toxicity is urgent. Cudrania tricuspidata (Carr.) Bur. ex Lavallee (Moraceae) is a traditional medicinal herb that is considered to have antitumour efficacy. We extracted and isolated cudraxanthone L (CXL) from Cudrania tricuspidata and evaluated its anti-cancer efficacy. CXL treatment inhibited angiogenesis of chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) and repressed the cell viability of various human cancer cells, indicating it presented the antitumour potential. Among them, CXL presented the best inhibitory effects on MGC803 cells. In addition, the invasion, migration and clonogenicity were significantly repressed, S phase of the cell cycle was arrested, and apoptosis was induced when MGC803 cells were treated with CXL. The results of RNA sequencing, qRT-PCR and western blotting verified that CXL regulated the MAPK signalling pathway and induced apoptosis by FAS-mediated pathway. The in vivo data revealed that CXL arrested tumour growth without toxic effects and upregulated the protein levels in FAS-mediated pathway in MGC803 gastric cancer-bearing mice. In summary, we demonstrate CXL presents impactful anti-GC efficacy by regulating the MAPK signalling pathway and promoting the FAS-mediated pathway.

Hole transport layer is one of the primary factors that improve the optical-electric properties of perovskite solar cells. Spiro-OMeTAD is frequently utilized as hole transport materials in PSCs. However, pristine or oxygen oxidized spiro-OMeTAD has low mobility and conductivity. Herein, cumene hydroperoxide is introduced to accelerate the oxidation of spiro-OMeTAD, which improves the carrier mobility, declines the trap-state density and optimizes the energy match with perovskite layer, leading to the enhancement of the performance of device. Kelvin probe force microscopy images and Atomic force microscopy images show the improvement of interface morphology. Multiple electrochemical characterizations demonstrate the acceleration of spiro-OMeTAD oxidation, the enhancement of conductivity of the doped hole transport material, and the decline of trap-state density and carrier annihilation in hole transport layer/perovskite interface after the modification. The perovskite solar cell doped with optimal concentration acquires a power conversion efficiency of 20.33%, while the undoped device gets an efficiency of 18.00%.

Although fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication can ] support well a high data rate of transmission, issues such as base station (BS) failure and poor BS signals may cause serious interruption problems. This paper studies the user-BS selection strategy with received signal strength indication (RSSI)-based reliability in 5G wireless networks. First, reliability is defined on the basis of the RSSI and failure probability of the BS. The problem is modeled as a selection strategy optimization problem with BS capacity and receiving sensitivity as constraints. Second, the original problem can be transformed into a resource allocation problem with probabilistic constraints. For the situation where user distribution is known, we used dynamic programming to obtain the optimal BS selection strategy. For the situation where user distribution is unknown, starting from user trajectory data, we used the space–time density estimation method based on the Epanechnikov kernel to estimate user density and bring it into dynamic programming to obtain the optimal selection strategy. Simulation results show that our density estimation algorithm is more accurate than the commonly used density estimation algorithm. Compared with the distance-based optimization method, our RSSI-based optimization method also improved the communication signal quality under different scenarios.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A), the most common posttranscriptional modification in eukaryotic mRNAs, plays an important role in mRNA splicing, editing, stability, degradation, etc. Since the methylation state is dynamic, methylation sequencing needs to be carried out over different time periods, which brings some difficulties to identify the RNA methyladenine sites. Thus, it is necessary to develop a fast and accurate method to identify the RNA N6-methyladenosine sites in the transcriptome. In this study, we use first-order and second-order Markov models to identify RNA N6-methyladenine sites in three species (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mouse, and Homo sapiens). These two methods can fully consider the correlation between adjacent nucleotides. The results show that the performance of our method is better than that of other existing methods. Furthermore, the codons encoded by three nucleotides have biases in mRNA, and a second-order Markov model can capture this kind of information exactly. This may be the main reason why the performance of the second-order Markov model is better than that of the first-order Markov model in the m6A prediction problem. In addition, we provide a corresponding web tool called MM-m6APred.

This article considers the robust control problem of non-linear magnetic levitation system with parameter uncertainties and external disturbance. To obtain a simple and practical controller that does not depend on the exact model information, a generalised-proportional-integral observer is constructed to estimate the velocity and disturbance. Then, based on mild assumptions and the estimated values, an output feedback tracking controller is proposed such that the reference position tracking task could be realised. The obtained control approach is confirmed strictly by theoretical analysis. Finally, simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Plasma separation is of high interest for lateral flow tests using whole blood as sample liquids. Here, we built a passive microfluidic device for plasma separation with high performance. This device was made by blood filtration membrane and off-stoichiometry thiol–ene (OSTE) pillar forest. OSTE pillar forest was fabricated by double replica moldings of a laser-cut polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) mold, which has a uniform microstructure. This device utilized a filtration membrane to separate plasma from whole blood samples and used hydrophilic OSTE pillar forest as the capillary pump to propel the plasma. The device can be used to separate blood plasma with high purity for later use in lateral flow tests. The device can process 45 μL of whole blood in 72 s and achieves a plasma separation yield as high as 60.0%. The protein recovery rate of separated plasma is 85.5%, which is on par with state-of-the-art technologies. This device can be further developed into lateral flow tests for biomarker detection in whole blood.

Controlling capillary flow rate of sample liquid is of high interest for lateral flow tests, since the flow rate can affect the dissolution and mixing of the immunoreagents and the efficiency of immunoreactions. Here we develop a facile method to adjust the capillary flow rate on lateral flow test substrates by using tape to cover the surface of substrates. We test this method on the traditional lateral flow test substrate—nitrocellulose and a novel lateral flow test substrate—synthetic paper, which is a porous media made by interlocked off-stoichiometry thiol-ene (OSTE) micropillars. We found that after the surface was covered by tape, the average flow rate decreased to 61% of the original flow rate on nitrocellulose, while the average flow rate increased to at least 320% of the original flow rate on synthetic paper. More interesting, besides the increase of flow rate, the volume capacity of synthetic paper also increases after covered by tape. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of length and position of tape on the capillary flow rate for nitrocellulose. A longer tape will lead to a smaller flow rate. The influence of tape of same length on the flow rate is bigger when the tape is placed closer to the loading pad. These results can help in the flow rate control on lateral flow test substrates, and potentially improve the performance of lateral flow tests.

Tin oxide (SnO2), as electron transport material to substitute titanium oxide (TiO2) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), has aroused wide interests. However, the performance of the PSCs based on SnO2 is still hard to compete with the TiO2-based devices. Herein, a novel strategy is designed to enhance the photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of PSCs by integrating rare-earth ions Ln3+ (Sc3+, Y3+, La3+) with SnO2 nanospheres as mesoporous scaffold. The doping of Ln promotes the formation of dense and large-sized perovskite crystals, which facilitate interfacial contact of electron transport layer/perovskite layer and improve charge transport dynamics. Ln dopant optimizes the energy level of perovskite layer, reduces the charge transport resistance, and mitigates the trap state density. As a result, the optimized mesoporous PSC achieves a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.63% without hysteresis, while the undoped PSC obtains an efficiency of 19.01%. The investigation demonstrates that the rare-earth doping is low-cost and effective method to improve the photovoltaic performance of SnO2-based PSCs.

In the western areas of China, bilingual teaching is in the beginning phrase, and hasn't reached the desirable outcomes. In order to know the development phase of bilingual teaching in less-developed areas of China, this paper chose students and teachers from two universities which respectively located in two provinces of the western areas of China and have different teaching levels as representative examples, and issued total of 352 valid questionnaires to reflect the bilingual teaching comprehensively. The research finds that learners have pessimistic attitude toward bilingual teaching and don't realize that the great importance of bilingual teaching in terms of personal development in the long run. The efficiency of bilingual teaching is affected by multitude of factors, including students' attitudes and learning methods, learning situation in and after class, teacher's levels, assessment methods and students' understanding levels. The thesis also investigates the evaluation systems of bilingual teaching and finds that students prefer the combination of oral and written exam.
