Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder with indistinct etiology and ill-defined pathophysiology. Intestinal inflammation involved in the pathogenesis of PD, but the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. Citrobacter rodentium (C.R) is a gram-negative bacterium that can be used to induce human inflammatory bowel disease in mice. Here, we investigated whether the proinflammatory effects caused by C.R infection initiate PD-like injury and/or exacerbate PD pathology and extensively studied the underlying mechanism. Mice were gavaged once with C.R and monitored for several pathological features at 9 days post infection. The results showed that C.R delivery in mice induced IBD-like symptoms, including significant weight loss, increased fecal water content, an impaired intestinal barrier, intestinal hyperpermeability and inflammation, and intestinal microbiota disturbances. Notably, C.R infection modified dopamine (DA) metabolism in the brains of both male and female mice. Subsequently, a single high dose of MPTP or normal saline was administered at 6 days post infection. At 3 days after MPTP administration, the feces were collected for 16 S rRNA analysis, and PD-like phenotypes and mechanisms were systemically analyzed. Compared with C.R or MPTP injection alone, the injection of C.R and MPTP combined worsened behavioral performance. Moreover, such combination triggered more severe dopaminergic degeneration and glial cell overactivation in the nigrostriatal pathway of mice. Mechanistically, the combination of C.R and MPTP increased the expression of TLR4 and NF-κB p65 in the colon and striatum and upregulated proinflammatory cytokine expression. Therefore, C.R infection-induced intestinal inflammation can impair dopamine metabolism and exacerbate PD pathological processes.

Abstract Neuroinflammation is one of the core pathological features of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Innate immune cells play a crucial role in the progression of PD. Microglia, the major innate immune cells in the brain, exhibit innate immune memory effects and are recognized as key regulators of neuroinflammatory responses. Persistent modifications of microglia provoked by the first stimuli are pivotal for innate immune memory, resulting in an enhanced or suppressed immune response to second stimuli, which is known as innate immune training and innate immune tolerance, respectively. In this study, LPS was used to establish in vitro and in vivo models of innate immune memory. Microglia-specific Hif-1α knockout mice were further employed to elucidate the regulatory role of HIF-1α in innate immune memory and MPTP-induced PD pathology. Our results showed that different paradigms of LPS could induce innate immune training or tolerance in the nigrostriatal pathway of mice. We found that innate immune tolerance lasting for one month protected the dopaminergic system in PD mice, whereas the effect of innate immune training was limited. Deficiency of HIF-1α in microglia impeded the formation of innate immune memory and exerted protective effects in MPTP-intoxicated mice by suppressing neuroinflammation. Therefore, HIF-1α is essential for microglial innate immune memory and can promote neuroinflammation associated with PD.

Background: The sustainable development of aquaculture is a crucial determinant of food security, the well-being of aquaculture practitioners, and economic growth within coastal regions. Considering the existing gap in research regarding spatial and temporal development of aquaculture, this study investigates the progression of aquaculture practices over time and across various locations in Fuding City, China. Methods: We retrospectively collected temporal and spatial data on aquaculture, as well as demographic, social, and economic data for Fuding City from 2010 to 2020. By employing 3D kernel density analysis, we illustrated the temporal and spatial changes in aquaculture. Furthermore, we utilized Ordinary Least Squares regression to investigate the driving factors behind the spatial changes in the aquaculture industry. Results: Over the past decades, we observed that in Fuding City, both the number of fishing rafts and aquaculture households initially decreased and then increased. The spatial distribution of aquaculture experienced a shift from the west (inner bay area) to the east (coastal area). Additionally, the type of fishing rafts also varied by region, with traditional rafts dominating the western inner bay and plastic rafts prevalent in the eastern offshore areas. Analysis of driving factors revealed that at least six factors have a significant positive correlation with the eastward shift of the aquaculture industry's center, including the proportion of migrant population, proportion of aquaculture to total fishery output, average temperature, investment in aquaculture technology, total fish sales, and GDP of Fuding City. Conclusion: This study examines the spatial and temporal dynamics of aquaculture in Fuding City from 2010 to 2020, proposing an innovative approach to spatial optimization that integrates both horizontal and vertical strategies. These insights aim to guide the development of coastal aquaculture policies and support sustainable regional development, fostering a balanced coexistence between human activities and marine environments.

AbstractAs a key material for capacitors, high-performance polymer dielectric films still exhibit the problem of low energy storage density, which cannot meet the requirements of high-power and high-temperature conditions. Here, a sandwich-structured composite film with inner layer doped TiO2-BCB (titanium dioxide – benzocyclobutene) and outer layer doped BN-BCB (boron nitride – benzocyclobutene) nanoparticles was prepared, which exhibits reduced dielectric loss, leakage current and enhanced dielectric constant (ε) and breakdown strength (Eb). Diels-Alder reaction and radical polymerization reactions are utilized to form the entire cross-linked sandwich structure. Moreover, the thermal-induced crosslinked structure replaces the traditional multilayer structure established by Van der Waals forces, thus improving the dielectric and mechanical qualities of the film. Specifically, the sandwich structure composites achieved a large discharge energy density (4.0 J/cm3) and high charge-discharge efficiency (84%) at 150 °C and 450 MV/m, and the dielectric dissipation factor is less than 0.005. These results demonstrated that designing a cross-linked network in multilayer nanocomposite structure is a feasible method to improve the high-temperature energy storage performance of these films.

Abstract Background Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) has been reported as a significant complication in elderly patients. Various methods have been proposed for reducing the incidence and severity of POCD. Intravenous lidocaine administration has been reported in the literature to reduce POCD, but the effect of lidocaine remains controversial. Methods We screened Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (up to April 2022) databases following a search strategy for intravenous lidocaine on POCD. We also screened related bibliographies on lidocaine for POCD. Ten articles comprising 1517 patients were selected and analyzed. We divided the postoperative follow-up period as follows: short term (90 days). Outcomes We found that lidocaine could attenuate the overall incidence of POCD, especially in the short term. There were no differences between lidocaine and placebo on the overall severity of POCD. Conclusion Lidocaine administered intravenously could attenuate the overall incidence of POCD and its severity in the short term.

Abstract Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second common hematologic malignancy manifesting as a clonal proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow. In recent years, high expression and activity of pim kinase have been found to be associated with both the progression and prognosis of a significant proportion of malignant diseases. Therefore, pim kinase has become a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of MM and some pim kinase inhibitors have demonstrated good efficacy in clinical trials. Based on nearly the entire literature searched from PubMed in the field of pim kinase in MM, the paper concluded how pim kinase got involved in the proliferation of myeloma cells, the progression of bone disease infiltration, and even in the regulation of the immune microenvironment. Next as a very promising drug, the effectiveness of pim kinase inhibitors as single agents or in combination with other drugs in the treatment of MM was also summarized. Our analysis will guide the clinical use of pim kinase inhibitors for managing tumor load and bone disease in MM patients.

This study aimed to explore the impact of L-arginine (Arg) on the development of resistance to Alternaria tenuissima (A. tenuissima) in blueberries. The metabolism of reactive oxygen species, pathogenesis-related proteins (PRs), and jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis pathways were analyzed, including changes in activity and gene expression of key enzymes. The results indicated that Arg treatment could prevent the development of Alternaria fruit rot in postharvest blueberries. In addition, it was also found to induce a burst of hydrogen peroxide in the blueberries early on during storage, thereby improving their resistance to A. tenuissima. Arg treatment was observed to increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase) and related gene expression, as well as the total levels of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanin in the blueberries. The activity and gene expression of the PRs (chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase) were elevated in Arg-treated blueberries, boosting their resistance to pathogens. Additionally, a surge in endogenous JA content was detected in Arg-treated blueberries, along with upregulated expression of key genes related the JA biosynthesis pathway (VcLOX1, VcAOS1, VcAOC, VcAOC3, VcOPR1, VcOPR3, VcMYC2, and VcCOI1), thereby further bolstering disease resistance. In conclusion, Arg treatment was determined to be a promising prospective method for controlling Alternaria fruit rot in blueberries.

Carbon fiber fabric-reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (CFF-PEEK) composites exhibit exceptional mechanical properties, and their flexibility and conformability make them a promising alternative to traditional prepregs. However, the formation of the CFF-PEEK composite is trapped in the high viscosity of PEEK, the smooth surface, and tightly interwoven bundles of CFF. It is more difficult for the resin to flow through the fibers of complex textile structures. Here, a simple film stacking method using the hot-pressing process of plain-woven CFF-PEEK thermoplastic composites is discussed. The uniform distribution of PEEK resin between each layer of CFF reduces the flow distance during the molding process, preventing defects in the composite material effectively. Four process parameters, including molding temperature (370, 385, 400, and 415 °C), molding pressure (1, 2, 4, 8, and 10 MPa), molding time (10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 90 min), and pre-compaction process, are considered. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), tensile strength, and flexural strength of CFF/PEEK composites are evaluated to optimize the process parameters. Moreover, ultrasonic scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are employed to observe the formation quality and microscopic failure modes of CFF/PEEK composites, respectively. The ultimate process parameters are a molding temperature of 410 °C, molding pressure of 10 MPa, molding time of 60 min, and the need for the pre-compaction process. Under the best process parameters, the ILSS is 62.5 MPa, the flexural strength is 754.4 MPa, and the tensile strength is 796.1 MPa. This work provides valuable insight for studying the process parameters of fiber fabric-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composites and revealing their impact on mechanical properties.

Ghost imaging (GI) reveals its exceptional superiority over conventional cameras in a range of challenging scenarios such as weak illumination or special waveband. For high-performance GI, it is vital to obtain a sequence of high-fidelity bucket signals. However, measurements may suffer from distortion or loss in harsh environments. Here we present multiple description coding ghost imaging, which rests on illumination consisting of different coding patterns to address this challenge. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is capable of producing satisfactory image even when the sequence of bucket signals is incomplete or highly distorted. This method provides an encouraging boost for GI in practical applications.

Sterile medical masks are essential in preventing infectious diseases. However, the ethylene oxide contained within these masks is a class I carcinogen. The standard method for measuring ethylene oxide is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, which is not fit with the dynamic process of human inhalation. Thus, the amount of ethylene oxide volatilized from masks and inhaled by users is unknown. In this work, ethylene oxide was detected by using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry, which can measure volatile quantities in milliseconds. We found that ethylene oxide was volatilized from masks during use. Within the first minute, the ethylene oxide concentration decreased by 84.65%, and then the rate of reduction gradually slowed. After 5 min, all ethylene oxide was effectively volatilized, and the average mass of ethylene oxide inhaled was 299.02 μg. We investigated three methods to reduce the concentration of ethylene oxide in masks before use: natural airing, shaking the mask, and blowing the mask with a hair dryer. The hair dryer method produced the best results: the ethylene oxide concentration decreased by 88.3% after only 10 s. The natural airing method was the least effective: the ethylene oxide concentration decreased by 60.7% even after 3 h.

Polymer dielectric materials operating at high temperatures are widely needed for advanced electrical and electronic systems. However, currently commercial polymer dielectrics are limited to relatively low operating temperatures. Here, a series of polyether ether ketone (PEEK)-based blends with self-crosslinkable polyetherimide (c-PEI) has been prepared as high temperature dielectrics by melt blending. The obtained polymer blends maintain stable dielectric properties over a wide frequency and temperature range. At 160 °C，the dissipation factor of the blend film is only 0.0019 which is only 14% of the pristine PEEK. Crosslinked networks in polymer blends could efficiently restrict the movement of polymer segments which suppress the dielectric loss and enhance high temperature performance. Furthermore, the introducing of Al2O3 improve the dielectric constant of the polymer blend, which compensated for the decreased dielectric constant due to crosslinking. In addition, the c-PEI/PEEK blends could be produced by industrial-grade continuous production process. This work presents a feasible strategy to large-scale fabrication of high-temperature dielectric materials by melt blending with self-crosslinkable polymers.

ABSTRACT To solve the current problems of poor seeding stability and complex maintenance of maize seed-metering devices, a clamp-holding precision maize-seed-metering device is designed. The structure and working principle of the seed-metering device are described, the optimum state of maize seed clamping is analyzed, and the range of each working area of the seed-metering device is determined. The profile and structural parameters of the limit guide plate are designed by analyzing the laws of motion of the seed-picking block. A mechanical model of maize seeds under the critical state in each working area of the seed-metering device is established. The influence of the seed-metering device's rotational speed and the clamping force of the seed-picking block on the seeding performance are analyzed. A physical prototype of the seed-metering device was made for bench tests and field verification tests. The qualified, multiple seeding, and missed seeding rates of the designed seed-metering device were 94.21%, 3.52%, and 2.27%, respectively, meeting the agronomic requirements of maize sowing. The study provides theoretical guidance for designing and optimizing precision maize-seed-metering devices.

Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is involved in the regulation of protein aggregation and neuroinflammation, but its role in Parkinson’s disease (PD) remains controversial. In this study, Hdac6−/− mice were generated by CRISPR-Cas9 technology for exploring the effect of HDAC6 on the pathological progression of PD. We found that male Hdac6−/− mice exhibit hyperactivity and certain anxiety. In the acute 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mice, though motor injury was slightly alleviated by HDAC6 deficiency, dopamine (DA) depletion in the striatum, the decrease in the number of DA neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) and the reduction in DA neuronal terminals were not affected. In addition, activation of glial cells and the expression of α-synuclein, as well as the levels of apoptosis-related proteins in the nigrostriatal pathway, were not changed in MPTP-injected wild-type and Hdac6−/− mice. Therefore, HDAC6 deficiency leads to moderate alterations of behaviors and Parkinson’s disease pathology in mice.

Combined elemental deficiencies are more complex and insidious physiological metabolic responses than single elemental stresses. To determine the effects of phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and their deficient combinations on photosynthetic characteristics of rice seedlings, we investigated their effects on dry weight, chlorophyll (Chl) content, rapid photosynthetic carbon assimilation CO2 responses, and Chl fluorescence in four-week-old rice (CB9 and BJ1 cultivars) seedlings. The results showed that the dry matter, maximum carboxylation efficiency (Vc,max), and maximum electron transfer efficiency (Jmax) of seedlings were all reduced to different degrees under the element deficiency treatments. JIP-test analysis showed that the decrease in the concentration of active PSII reaction centers (RC/ABS) under -Zn treatment was the main reason for the inhibition of performance index PIABS. The -P treatment reduced RC/ABS and inhibited electron transfer (ψEo). Primary photochemical reactions (φPo) of -P-Zn treated seedlings were also inhibited compared to the -P treatment. The -Fe and -Fe-Zn treatments inhibited photosynthesis most severely, which not only reduced RC/ABS but also severely inhibited φPo and ψEo. Notably, the -P-Fe and -P-Fe-Zn treatments of the CB9 improved the RC/ABS, alleviating the limitation of Fe deficiency. These results help enhance the understanding of the complex relationship between nutrient balance and photosynthesis, especially for P, Fe, Zn, and their combined deficiency.

Lysine demethylase 6B (KDM6B) is a histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27) demethylase that serves as a key mediator of gene transcription. Although KDM6B has been reported to modulate neuroinflammation after ischemic stroke, its role in ischemic brain injury is yet to be well elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to thoroughly demonstrate the molecular mechanism underlying the effect of KDM6B on neurological function and astrocyte response in post-ischemic brain injury. Middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO) mouse models were constructed, while the oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) model was developed in astrocytes to mimic injury conditions. KDM6B was upregulated post-MCAO in mice and in astrocytes following the induction of OGD/R. Silencing of KDM6B resulted in suppressed neurological deficit, reduced cerebral infarction volume, attenuated neuronal cell apoptosis, and disrupted inflammation. Dual-luciferase reporter gene and chromatin immunoprecipitation-quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays revealed that KDM6B inhibited H3K27 trimethylation in the interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4) promoter region, resulting in the upregulation of IRF4 expression, which in turn bound to the Notch2 promoter region to induce its downstream factor SRY-related high-mobility group box 9 (SOX9). SOX9 knockdown reversed the effects of KDM6B overexpression on ischemia-triggered brain damage. Based on these findings, we concluded that KDM6B-mediated demethylation of IRF4 contributes to aggravation of ischemic brain injury through SOX9 activation.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is the most common malignancy of the biliary tract, with extremely dismal prognosis. Limited therapeutic options are available for GBC patients. We used whole-exome sequencing of human GBC to identify the ErbB and epigenetic pathways as two vulnerabilities in GBC. We screened two focused small-molecule libraries that target these two pathways using GBC cell lines and identified the mTOR inhibitor INK-128 and the histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor JNJ-26481585 as compounds that inhibited proliferation at low concentrations. Both significantly suppressed tumor growth and metastases in mouse models. Both synergized with the standard of care chemotherapeutic agent gemcitabine in cell lines and in mouse models. Furthermore, the activation of the mTOR pathway, measured by immunostaining for phosphorylated mTOR and downstream effector S6K1, is correlated with poor prognosis in GBC. Phosphorylated mTOR or p-S6K1 in clinical samples is an independent indicator for overall survival in GBC patients. Taken together, our findings suggest that mTOR inhibitors and HDAC inhibitors can serve as potential therapeutics for GBC, and the phosphorylation of mTOR and S6K1 may serve as biomarkers for GBC.

Abstract Researchers are devoted to developing dielectric elastomers (DEs) with excellent electromechanical properties as an artificial muscle material. The authors report a new class of semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) composites that contains siloxane‐modified linear polyurethane (PU) and silicone rubber through reasonable design of polymer structure. The organic‐filler copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) is chemically grafted into the semi‐interpenetrating network as a cross‐linking point and exhibits excellent dispersibility in the matrix. The various properties of the obtained composite films are also evaluated. The dielectric constant (8.65 at 1 kHz) and maximum actuation strain at 30 MV m−1 (5.32%) are significantly higher than those of semi‐IPN composites.

With the rapid development of 5G technology, people have put forward many new requirements for low-dielectric materials. The newest version of 5G communication technology requires frequency ranges become higher. This means that the wavelength of waves used in the 5G communication technology become shorter. The shorter the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave is, the poorer the diffraction ability it has, and the stronger the attenuation that occurs during its propagation. The existing materials are far from meeting the new requirements of 5G technology. Therefore, the research of new low-dielectric materials has become a hot spot. This article summarizes the related researches on some new types of poly aryl ether materials with low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss to provide experience for follow-up work.

Abstract Background Hypovolemic shock and septic challenge are two major causes of acute kidney injury (AKI) in the clinic setting. Src homology 2 domain-containing phosphatase 2 (SHP2) is one of the major protein phosphatase tyrosine phosphatase (PTPs), which play a significant role in maintaining immunological homeostasis by regulating many facets of immune cell signaling. In this study, we explored whether SHP2 signaling contributed to development of AKI sequential hemorrhage (Hem) and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and whether inactivation of SHP2 through administration of its selective inhibitor, phenylhydrazonopyrazolone sulfonate 1 (PHPS1), attenuated this injury. Methods Male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to Hem (a “priming” insult) followed by CLP or sham-Hem plus sham-CLP (S/S) as controls. Samples of blood and kidney were harvested at 24 h post CLP. The expression of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), caspase3 as well as SHP2:phospho-SHP2, extracellular-regulated kinase (Erk1/2): phospho-Erk1/2, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3):phospho-STAT3 protein in kidney tissues were detected by Western blotting. The levels of creatinine (Cre) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in serum were measured according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Blood inflammatory cytokine/chemokine levels were detected by ELISA. Results We found that indices of kidney injury, including levels of BUN, Cre and NGAL as well as histopathologic changes, were significantly increased after Hem/CLP in comparison with that in the S/S group. Furthermore, Hem/CLP resulted in elevated serum levels of inflammatory cytokines/chemokines, and induced increased levels of HMGB1, SHP2:phospho-SHP2, Erk1/2:phospho-Erk1/2, and STAT3:phospho-STAT3 protein expression in the kidney. Treatment with PHPS1 markedly attenuated these Hem/CLP-induced changes. Conclusions In conclusion, our data indicate that SHP2 inhibition attenuates AKI induced by our double-hit/sequential insult model of Hem/CLP and that this protective action may be attributable to its ability to mitigate activation of the Erk1/2 and STAT3 signaling pathway. We believe this is a potentially important finding with clinical implications warranting further investigation.

Abstract Background Because of its analgesic and light sedative properties, the highly selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist dexmedetomidine (DEX) has been suggested for the treatment of septic patients, but its effect on the duration of mechanical ventilation remains unclear. The present study was conducted to review the extant literature in DEX and determine its influence on ventilation time in adult septic patients. Methods Databases of PubMed, Cochrane, and EMBASE were applied till 20th January 2019 without language restriction. The searching strategy as following: sepsis OR septic AND mechanical ventilation AND dexmedetomidine. Two authors screened titles, abstracts, and even articles to meet the including criterion independently. In addition, references of related articles or reviews were also referred. Data was recorded in a table and analyzed using the software of Review Manager 5.0. Results Four studies with a total of 349 patients were included. Three trials with 267 patients revealed the effect of DEX on duration of mechanical ventilation, two trials with 264 patients on ventilator-free days and four trials with 334 patients on 28-day mortality. The analyzed results indicated that DEX was not associated with significantly different durations of mechanical ventilation (MD 0.65, 95% CI, − 0.13 to 1.42, P = 0.10). However, there were significant differences in ventilator-free days (MD 3.57, 95% CI, 0.26 to 6.89, P = 0.03) and 28-day mortality (RR 0.61, 95% CI, 0.49 to 0.94, P = 0.02) in the septic patients. Conclusion Administration of DEX for sedation in septic patients was not associated with the duration of mechanical ventilation, but it increased the ventilator-free days and reduced 28-day mortality.

A natural hybrid filler (silica carbon black, name as SiCB) containing biochar and silica, was prepared from pyrolytic rice husk, and incorporated into natural rubber matrix. SiCB product exhibited very unique natural hybrid interface structure, which endows SiCB multiple-functional roles. It can act as good reinforcing filler to enhance mechanical properties and provide strong interfacial polarizability and dipole polarizability. As a result, when the content of SiCB was enhanced to 20 phr (parts per hundred of rubber), the tensile strength of the natural rubber composites was largely increased up to 30.28 MPa, which was two time higher to that of pure NR (15MPa). The dielectric constant at 103 Hz of the composites filled with 60 phr SiCB reached 7.62, which was 2.4 times of that of pure NR, because of the simultaneously improved interfacial and dipole polarizability. Moreover, the dielectric loss of all these composites at 103 Hz remained lower than 0.05. This work provides a simple and nontoxic method to prepare a sustainable natural hybrid filler and explore its novel application. Comparing with the rice husk ash, it can enhance the mechanical and electrical properties of the rubber composites at the same time. This will greatly expand the application of such biomass-based composite materials and this renewable resource.

In recent years, convolutional neural networks have made many advances in the field of computer vision. In smart greenhouses, using robots based on computer vision technology to pollinate flowers is one of the main methods of pollination. However, due to the complex lighting environment and the influence of leaf shadow in the greenhouse, it is difficult for the existing object detection algorithms to have high recall rate and accuracy. Based on this problem, from the perspective of application, we proposed a Yolov5s-based tomato flowering stage detection method named FlowerYolov5, which can well identify the bud phase, blooming phase and first fruit phase of tomato flowers. Firstly, in order to reduce the loss of tomato flower feature information in convolution and to strengthen the feature extraction of the target, FlowerYolov5 adds a new feature fusion layer. Then, in order to highlight the information of the object, the Convolutional Block Attention module (CBAM) is added to the backbone layer of FlowerYolov5. In the constructed tomato flower dataset, compared with YOLOv5s, the mAP of FlowerYolov5 increased by 7.8% (94.2%), and the F1 score of FlowerYolov5 increased by 6.6% (89.9%). It was found that the overall parameter of FlowerYolov5 was 23.9 Mbyte, thus achieving a good balance between model parameter size and recognition accuracy. The experimental results show that the FlowerYolov5 has good robustness and more accurate precision. At the same time, the recall rate has also been greatly improved. The prediction results of the proposed algorithm can provide more accurate flower positioning for the pollination robot and improve its economic benefits.

ObjectiveTo compare the clinical value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) versus computed tomography (CT) for distinguishing neoplastic and non-neoplastic gallbladder polyps. Given whether laparoscopic cholecystectomy is needed, differential diagnosis of neoplastic and non-neoplastic gallbladder polyps is more important than benign and malignant polyps.MethodsA total of 89 consecutive patients with polypoid lesions of the gallbladder > 10 mm in size without local invasion or distant metastasis during primary screening were enrolled in this prospective and comparative study. All patients who met the inclusion criteria underwent CEUS and CT examinations prior to surgical resection. The enhancement patterns and microvascular imaging types were analyzed on CEUS. The maximum diameter and CT value of the lesions were also recorded and subjected to a comparative analysis. To realize tomato growth period monitoring and yield prediction of tomato cultivation, our study proposes a visual object tracking network called YOLO-deepsort to identify and count tomatoes in different growth periods. Based on the YOLOv5s model, our model uses shufflenetv2, combined with the CBAM attention mechanism, to compress the model size from the algorithm level. In the neck part of the network, the BiFPN multi-scale fusion structure is used to improve the prediction accuracy of the network. When the target detection network completes the bounding box prediction of the target, the Kalman filter algorithm is used to predict the target’s location in the next frame, which is called the tracker in this paper. Finally, calculate the bounding box error between the predicted bounding box and the bounding box output by the object detection network to update the parameters of the Kalman filter and repeat the above steps to achieve the target tracking of tomato fruits and flowers. After getting the tracking results, we use OpenCV to create a virtual count line to count the targets. Our algorithm achieved a competitive result based on the above methods: The mean average precision of flower, green tomato, and red tomato was 93.1%, 96.4%, and 97.9%. Moreover, we demonstrate the tracking ability of the model and the counting process by counting tomato flowers. Overall, the YOLO-deepsort model could fulfill the actual requirements of tomato yield forecast in the greenhouse scene, which provide theoretical support for crop growth status detection and yield forecast.

Preformed crowns are preferred to reduce the failure risk of restoration of primary teeth, but some drawback of conventional material is still a main barrier for their clinical use. Polyether etherketone (PEEK), a tooth colored, high-performance thermoplastic polymer, has been recognized as a promising alternative to manufacture the restoration of primary teeth. However, the hydrophobic surface and low surface energy of PEEK make it hard to establish a strong and durable adhesion. In this study, we have evaluated a modification method of polydopamine (PDA) coating with plasma pretreatment for the PEEK films by physical and chemical characterization, bonding properties, and biocompatibility. The surface properties of PEEK were well-characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adhesive strength of the PEEK films was greatly improved without significant reduction of the proliferation rate of human gingival fibroblast cells in MTT and Live/Dead assays. Therefore, PDA coating with plasma pretreatment may give a new solution for effective clinical application of PEEK in primary performed crowns.

The inhibitory effect of long intergenic non-coding RNA 00320 (LINC00320) in glioma cell proliferation has been proposed in a recent study. However, the mechanisms by which LINC00320 regulate aquaporin 9 (AQP9) in glioma require further exploration. Hence, this study aims to investigate effects of LINC00320 on tumorigenicity of glioma cells and angiogenesis of microvascular endothelial cells (MVECs). Expression of LINC00320 and AQP9 in glioma tissues and cells was measured by reverse transcription–quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. The relationship among LINC00320, nuclear factor κB subunit 1 (NFKB1) and AQP9 was examined by RNA immunoprecipitation, dual-luciferase reporter gene, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. The participation of LINC00320 and AQP9 in glioma cell proliferation and MVEC angiogenesis was analyzed using gain- and loss-of-function approaches. Finally, a nude mouse orthotopic xenograft model of glioma was established to investigate the effects of LINC00320 and AQP9 on glioma growth in vivo. LINC00320 was under-expressed and AQP9 was over-expressed in glioma tissues. Further mechanistic investigation showed that LINC00320 downregulated AQP9 by inhibiting the recruitment of NFKB1 to the promoter region of AQP9. LINC00320 overexpression or AQP9 silencing inhibited the proliferation of glioma cells and angiogenesis of MVECs. Also, upregulation of LINC00320 restrained tumor growth and angiogenesis in xenograft mice by downregulating AQP9. Taken together, LINC00320 acts as a tumor suppressor in glioma, thus presenting a novel therapeutic target.

Background/Aims: Researches have showed that cardiac shock wave therapy (CSWT) could improve left ventricular function and attenuate LV remodeling of the ischemic heart. Apoptosis plays an important role in myocardial infarction and determines heart function and prognosis. However, it is still not clear whether CSWT is sufficient to attenuate acute myocardial infarction (AMI) induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis in vivo. In this study, we used a rat model to examine whether CSWT could attenuate cardiomyocyte apoptosis after AMI and to explore potential mechanisms. Methods: We generated an AMI rat model to investigate the function and possible regulatory mechanisms of CSWT. All rats were randomly divided into four groups: the sham-operated only group, sham-operated with SW treatment group, AMI only group, and AMI treated with SW treatment group.The rats were treated with a left anterior descending coronary artery ligation for 12h and then treated with or without CSWT (800 shots at 0.1 mJ/ mm2). Cytochrome c release was measured to analyze mitochondrial function and integrity. The apoptotic cell rate was determined by TUNEL assay. Western blot was used to analyze the cell apoptosis-, inflammation-, and survival-related signaling pathways. Results: First, the methodology of CSWT in the rat model of AMI was established. Second, CSWT attenuated the cardiomyocyte apoptosis rate in the infarct border zone. Third, CSWT suppressed the expression of apoptosis and inflammation molecules after AMI. Fourth, CSWT inhibited activation of the JNK pathway, which indicated inhibition of the cell inflammatory pathways and promotion of cardiomyocyte survival after AMI. Conclusion: These results indicate that CSWT exerts a protective effect against AMI-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis, potentially by attenuating cytochrome c release from the mitochondria and inhibiting of the mitochondrial-dependent intrinsic apoptotic pathway. We also demonstrate that CSWT suppresses the JNK pathway and cardiomyocyte inflammation, which may also decrease cardiomyocyte apoptosis in vivo.

A deep-sea linear ultrasonic motor, which takes in-plane expansion mode as the working mode, is proposed in this paper. Its main structure is rectangular metal plate with four piezoelectric ceramics. First, suitable structural parameters of the ultrasonic motor are obtained by finite-element simulation. Then, the influences of static seal and the pressures of water on the performance of the ultrasonic motor are studied. Simulation result shows that the static seal slightly degrades the resonant frequency of the ultrasonic motor and vibration amplitude of the driving foot, and the pressures of water almost have no effect on resonant frequency, but it reduces the performance of the ultrasonic motor. Finally, we design and manufacture the prototype, whose velocity is measured at 214 mm/s while the water pressure is 8 MPa and the voltage signal with a frequency of 72 kHz and a voltage magnitude of 200 V. The experimental indicates that simulation results are consistent with experimental results. We verify the feasibility of the ultrasonic motor working in the deep-sea environment.

Abstract The kinetics of coke solution loss reaction with and without sodium carbonate were investigated under the reaction atmosphere of carbon dioxide. The variables of gas flow rate and coke particle size were explored to eliminate the external and internal diffusion, respectively. Then, the improved method combining with the least square and the genetic algorithm was proposed to solve the homogeneous model and the shrinking core model. It was found that the improved genetic algorithm method has good stability by studying the fitness function at each generation. In the homogeneous model, the activation energy with and without sodium carbonate was 54.89 and 95.56 kJ/mol, respectively. And, the activation energy with and without sodium carbonate in the shrinking core model was 49.83 and 92.18 kJ/mol, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that the sodium carbonate has the catalytic action. In addition, results showed that the estimated conversions were agreed well with the experimental ones, which indicated that the calculated kinetic parameters were valid and the proposed method was successfully developed. Background: Autophagy plays an important role in cardiovascular disease. Controversy still exists regarding the effect of autophagy on ischemic/hypoxic myocardium. Cardiac shock wave therapy (CSWT) is an effective alternative treatment for refractory ischemic heart disease. Whether CSWT can regulate cardiomyocyte autophagy under hypoxic conditions is not clear. We established a myocardial hypoxia model using the H9c2 cell line and performed shock waves (SWs) treatment to evaluate the effect of SW on autophagy. Methods: The H9c2 cells were incubated under hypoxic conditions, and SW treatment was then performed at energies of 0.02, 0.05, or 0.10 mJ/mm2. The cell viability and intracellular ATP level were examined. Western blot analysis was used to assess the expression of LC3B, AMPK, mTOR, Beclin-1, Sirt1, and HIF-1α. Autophagic vacuoles were visualized by monodansylcadaverine staining. Results: After the 24-hour hypoxic period, cardiomyocyte viability and ATP levels were decreased and autophagy was significantly increased in H9c2 cells. SW treatment with an energy of 0.05 mJ/mm2 significantly increased the cellular viability, ATP level, LC3B-II/I, and number of autophagic vacuoles. In addition, phosphorylated AMPK and Sirt1 were increased and phosphorylated mTOR and HIF-1α were decreased after SW treatment. Conclusion: SW treatment can potentially promote cardiomyocyte autophagy during hypoxia and protect cardiomyocyte function by regulating the AMPK/mTOR pathway.

Inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) chamber, we performed an in situ interlaminar shear test on a z-pinned carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum matrix composite (Cf/Al) fabricated by the pressure the infiltration method to understand its failure mechanism. Experiments show that introducing a stainless-steel z-pin increases the interlaminar shear strength of Cf/Al composite by 148%. The increase in interlaminar shear strength is attributed to the high strength of the stainless-steel z-pin and the strong bonding between the z-pin and the matrix. When the z-pin/matrix interface failed, the z-pin can still experience large shear deformation, thereby enhancing delamination resistance. The failure mechanism of composite includes interfacial debonding, aluminum plough, z-pin shear deformation, frictional sliding, and fracture. These results in this study will help us understand the interlaminar strengthening mechanism of z-pins in the delamination of metal matrix composites.

Aluminum nanoparticles hold promise for highly energetic materials and sustainable surface plasmonic materials. Most of the commercial Al nanoparticles are prepared via a high-throughput electrical explosion of wires method (up to 200 g h−1). However, the use of Al nanoparticles produced by an electrical explosion of wires is limited by their micrometer-sized aggregations and poor stability. Here, we use polystyrene with –COOH end-group to graft onto isolated Al nanoparticles and dramatically enhance their colloidal stability in various organic solvents. We further demonstrate that the polystyrene grafted Al nanoparticles can be doped into polystyrene films with high compatibility, leading to enhanced dielectric properties, such as higher dielectric constant, lower dielectric loss, and stronger breakdown strength. Moreover, the composite film can improve the moisture resistance of embedded Al nanoparticles.

Z-pinning can significantly improve the interlaminar shear properties of carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum matrix composites (Cf/Al). However, the effect of the metal z-pin on the in-plane properties of Cf/Al is unclear. This study examines the effect of the z-pin on the flexural strength and failure mechanism of Cf/Al composites with different volume contents and diameters of the z-pins. The introduction of a z-pin leads to the formation of a brittle phase at the z-pin/matrix interface and microstructural damage such as aluminum-rich pockets and carbon fiber waviness, thereby resulting in a reduction of the flexural strength. The three-point flexural test results show that the adding of a metal z-pin results in reducing the Cf/Al composites’ flexural strength by 2–25%. SEM imaging of the fracture surfaces revealed that a higher degree of interfacial reaction led to more cracks on the surface of the z-pin. This crack-susceptible interface layer between the z-pin and the matrix is likely the primary cause of the reduction of the flexural strength.

This paper presents the effect of through-thickness reinforcement by steel z-pins on the interlaminar shear properties and strengthening mechanisms of carbon fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composites (Cf/Al) with a short beam shear test method. Microstructural analysis reveals that z-pins cause minor microstructural damage including to fiber waviness and aluminum-rich regions, and interface reaction causes a strong interface between the stainless steel pin and the aluminum matrix. Z-pinned Cf/Al composites show reduced apparent interlaminar shear strength due to a change in the failure mode compared to unpinned specimens. The changed failure mode could result from decreased flexural strength due to microstructural damage as well as increased actual interlaminar shear strength. Fracture work is improved significantly with a z-pin diameter. The strong interface allows the deformation resistance of the steel pin to contribute to the crack bridging forces, which greatly enhances the interlaminar shear properties.

Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) made by selective laser sintering (SLS) approach of 3D printing offer many advantages over single polymer materials, such as low cost, sustainability, and better sintering accuracy. However, WPCs made via SLS are too weak to have widespread applications. In order to increase the mechanical properties of WPCs, a novel type of WPCs containing 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15 wt % carbon nanotubes (CNT), 14 wt % wood fibers, 86 wt % polyether sulfone (PES) was manufactured via SLS. The experimental results showed that the addition of small amount of CNTs can significantly increase the mechanical properties of the wood/PES composite material. The tensile strength, bending strength, and elasticity modulus were 76.3%, 227.9%, and 128.7% higher with 0.1 wt % CNTs than those without CNTs. The mechanical properties of specimens first increased and then decreased with the addition of CNTs. The SEM results of the specimens’ fracture morphology indicate that the preferable bonding interfaces between wood flour grains and PES grains were achieved by adding CNTs to the composites. There are two reasons why the composites possessed superior mechanical properties: CNTs facilitate the laser sintering process of WPCs due to their thermal conductivities, and CNTs directly reinforce WPCs.

A laboratory study was conducted to test the effects of biochars made from different feedstocks on soil quality indicators of arid soils. Biochars were produced from four locally-available agricultural residues: pecan shells, pecan orchard prunings, cotton gin trash, and yard waste, using a lab-scale pyrolyzer operated at 450 °C under a nitrogen environment and slow pyrolysis conditions. Two local arid soils used for crop production, a sandy loam and a clay loam, were amended with these biochars at a rate of 45 Mg·ha−1 and incubated for three weeks in a growth chamber. The soils were analyzed for multiple soil quality indicators including soil organic matter content, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and available nutrients. Results showed that amendment with cotton gin trash biochar has the greatest impact on both soils, significantly increasing SOM and plant nutrient (P, K, Ca, Mn) contents, as well as increasing the electrical conductivity, which creates concerns about soil salinity. Other biochar treatments significantly elevated soil salinity in clay loam soil, except for pecan shell biochar amended soil, which was not statistically different in EC from the control treatment. Generally, the effects of the biochar amendments were minimal for many soil measurements and varied with soil texture. Effects of biochars on soil salinity and pH/nutrient availability will be important considerations for research on biochar application to arid soils.
