The ovule is a plant structure that upon fertilization, transforms into a seed. Successful fertilization is required for optimum crop productivity and is strongly affected by environmental conditions including temperature and precipitation. Climate change refers to sustained changes in global or regional climate patterns over an extended period, typically decades to millions of years. These shifts can result from natural processes like volcanic eruptions and solar radiation fluctuations, but in recent times, human activities—especially the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial emissions—have accelerated the pace and scale of climate change. Human-induced climate change impacts the agricultural sector mainly through global warming and altering weather patterns, both of which create conditions that challenge agricultural production and food security. With food demand projected to sharply increase by 2050, urgent action is needed to prevent the worst impacts of climate change on food security and allow time for agricultural production systems to adapt and become more resilient. Gaining insights into the female reproductive part of the flower and seed development under extreme environmental conditions is important to oversee plant evolution, agricultural productivity, and food security in the face of climate change. This review summarizes the current knowledge on plant reproductive development and the effects of temperature and water stress, soil salinity, elevated carbon dioxide, and ozone pollution on the female reproductive structure and development across grain legumes, cereal, oilseed, and horticultural crops. It identifies gaps in existing studies for potential future research and suggests suitable mitigation strategies for sustaining crop productivity in a changing climate.

Abstract Objectives Endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) is an alternative technique to obtain the saphenous vein for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. We aimed to evaluate the early and mid-term outcomes of patients with EVH in CABG. Methods This cohort study included consecutive isolated CABG patients in Nanjing First Hospital from July 2020 to December 2022 using propensity score matching methods. Patients were classified to EVH group and open vein harvesting (OVH) group according to the vein harvesting methods. The primary outcome was the all-cause death, and the secondary outcomes were major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) including cardiovascular death, heart failure, myocardial infarction and revascularization and asymptomatic survival in the follow-up. Results Totally 1247 patients were included in the study with 849 in OVH group and 398 in EVH group. Patients with EVH were more female, diabetes, higher body mass index, more multi-vessel and left main diseases. 308 pairs were formed after the matching. There was no significant difference in the rates of in-hospital death (EVH vs. OVH, 2.3% vs. 1.3%, P = 0.543). During the 3 years follow-up, EVH grafts were considered not inferior to OVH grafts, no differences were found in all-cause death [8.5% vs. 5.0%, hazard ratio (HR) 1.565, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.77–3.17, P = 0.21], MACEs (8.1% vs. 7.1%, HR 1.165, 95CI: 0.51–2.69, P = 0.71) and asymptomatic survival (66.7% vs. 72.5%, HR 1.117, 95%CI: 0.65–1.92, P = 0.68). Conclusions EVH grafts were considered comparable to OVH grafts in patients following CABG in the 3 years follow-up.

The excessive use of chemical fertilizers in the Guanxi honey pomelo production area has led to severe soil acidification and magnesium (Mg) deficiency, adversely affecting pomelo fruit quality. To address this issue, an integrated nutrient optimization model crucial for ensuring the sustainable and environmentally friendly development of the Guanxi honey pomelo industry has been explored. In a three-year experiment, two fertilizer treatments were implemented: a farmer fertilizer practice (FP) and an NPK reduction plus foliar Mg fertilizer (OPT + fMg). We investigated the impact of this integrated optimized fertilization measure on pomelo fruit quality from three aspects: flavor (sugars and organic acids), nutrition (vitamin C and mineral elements), and antioxidant properties (phenolics, flavonoids, and phytic acid). The results revealed that the OPT + fMg treatment improved fruit flavor by reducing acidity (titratable acid, citric acid, and quinine), while having a minimal impact on sugar components (sucrose, fructose, and glucose). Additionally, the OPT + fMg treatment increased the total phenolics, total flavonoids, and phytic acid in the fruit peel, enhancing its potential antioxidant quality. However, the OPT + fMg treatment reduced the mineral nutrient quality (excluding calcium) in the fruit. As for the fruit developmental period, the OPT + fMg treatment significantly increased the total flavonoid concentration in the peel from the mid-expansion fruit stage, followed by notable increases in phytic acid in the peel during the mid-to-late expansion fruit stage. The total phenolic concentration in the peel significantly rose only during the late fruit development stage. The most pronounced effect was observed on phytic acid in both peel and pulp. The influence of the OPT + fMg treatment on the mineral nutrients (excluding calcium) primarily occurred during the mid-to-late expansion fruit stage. Overall, the OPT + fMg treatment significantly improved the comprehensive nutritional quality of pomelo fruit, providing valuable insights for scientifically reducing fertilizer application while enhancing fruit quality.

In the era of big data, data processing capability is key to gaining a competitive advantage for businesses. With appropriate technical and organizational resources in place, enterprises can extract considerable value from the vast amount of available data, thereby increasing their competitive advantage. Therefore, to utilize big data resources effectively, enterprises should focus on improving the intellectual abilities of big data analysts. Big data analytics intellectual capability (BDAIC) refers to the specialized skills and knowledge that employees of the enterprise possess, including technical, technical management, business, and relational knowledge, that would enable them to use analytics tools to accomplish organizational tasks and shape the core competitiveness of an enterprise. This study constructs a theoretical model that focuses on the mediating role of person-tool fit and examines the mechanisms by which BDAIC affects an enterprise's operational performance. The results show that BDAIC, which contains four basic categories of knowledge, positively influences an enterprise's operational efficiency. Additionally, person-tool matching mediates BDAIC's effect on an enterprise's operational performance. These findings explore the latest avenues of exploration in the research paradigm of big data analytics. Furthermore, this study has important implications for practitioners trying to use big data to improve business performance.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between secreted frizzled-related protein 5 (SFRP5) expression and fluorine 18-fluoro-deoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) uptake imaged with positron emission tomography/tomography (PET/CT) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In addition, we sought to elucidate the potential role and mechanism of action of SFRP5 in NSCLC.Materials and methods: The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the lesions was calculated. SFRP5 expression was analyzed using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The correlation between SFRP5 expression and SUVmax was evaluated using Pearson’s correlation analysis. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), flow cytometry, wound healing, and transwell assays were used to analyze cell viability, apoptosis, migration, and invasion, respectively.Results and conclusion: The results indicated that the SUVmax was higher in patients with NSCLC than that in healthy volunteers. Moreover, SFRP5 expression was lower in tissues from the four types of NSCLC than that in the adjacent normal tissues. SUVmax negatively correlated with SFRP5 expression in the four types of NSCLC. In addition, up-regulation of SFRP5 decreased the viability, migration, and invasion abilities, and increased apoptosis of NSCLC cells. Furthermore, SFRP5 inhibited the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in NSCLC cells. In conclusion, SFRP5 modulates the biological behaviors of NSCLC through Wnt/β-catenin pathway.

With the development of network technology, enterprises face the explosive growth of data every day. Therefore, to fully mine the value of massive data, big data analysis (BDA) technology has become the key to developing the core competitiveness of enterprises. However, few empirical studies have investigated the influencing mechanism of the BDA capability of an enterprise on its operational performance. To fill this gap, this study explores how BDA technology capability influences enterprise operation performance, based on dynamic capabilities theory and resource-based theory. It proposes the key variables, including the connectivity, compatibility, and modularization of big data analysis technical capability, enterprise's operational performance, and the fit between data and tools, to establish a model and study the correlation between the variables. The results highlight the mediating role of data-tool fit in the relationships between BDA capability and the enterprise's operational performance, which is a major finding that has not been underlined in the extant literature. This study provides valuable insight for operational managers to help them in mobilizing BDA capability for enterprises' operational management and improving operational performance.

Seaweeds are a potential source of minerals, essential amino acids, fatty acids, proteins, and various bioactive compounds such as antioxidants. The higher water content of seaweeds reduces the shelf life and this requires the appropriate drying method. The drying conditions play a major role in the conservation of nutrient composition in dried seaweeds. In recent years, the seaweed industry has used many different drying methods with advantages and limitations. Hybrid hot-water Goodle dryer (HHGD) which is a special dryer mixed with hot-water and a Korean traditional heating system (Goodlejang) might be a solution to avoid these limitations. The present study evaluated the effect of drying conditions in HHGD on nutrient composition and bioactivities of brown seaweeds. Moreover, freeze-dryer (FD) and HHGD were employed in this study to compare the dried outputs obtained from four brown seaweed species. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of the hybrid hot-water Goodle drying method (HHGDM) on the nutritional composition and antioxidant activity of dried seaweeds. AOAC standard methods were used to analyze the proximate composition of dried samples and their 70% ethanol extract. The intracellular and extracellular antioxidant activities were evaluated using Vero cells and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer respectively. High performance liquid chromatography, apoptotic body formation, and in-vivo experiments were used for further confirmation of the quality of dried output. The proximate composition results obtained from drying in HHGD and FD did not exhibit any significant difference. Moreover, the seaweed extracts from the dried seaweeds by HHGD and FD dryings were also not different and both significantly down-regulated in-vivo and in-vitro oxidative stress. Furthermore, the high performance liquid chromatography results revealed that the two dryers did not make the major peaks different in the chromatograms. Freeze-drying method (FDM) provides elevated quality for dried output, but there are limitations such as high cost and low capacity. The results from a novel HHGD did not provide any significant difference with the results in FD and expressed a potential to avoid the limitations in FD. Overall, these findings solidified the applicability of HHGD over FD.

Objective: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) displays the characteristics of abnormal activity of the immune system, contributing to diverse clinical symptoms. Herein, this study was conducted for discovering novel immune cell-relevant therapeutic targets.Methods: The abundance of diverse immune cells was estimated in PBMCs of SLE and healthy controls from the GSE50772 dataset with CIBERSORT approach. Immune cell-relevant co-expression modules were screened with WGCNA and relevant characteristic genes were determined with LASSO algorithm. Inflammatory chemokines were measured in serum of twenty SLE patients and twenty controls through ELISA. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were isolated and TK1 expression was measured in BMSCs through RT-qPCR and western blotting. TK1-overexpressed and TK-1-silenced BMSCs of SLE were conducted and apoptosis and cell cycle were measured with flow cytometry. Apoptosis-, cell cycle- and senescence-relevant proteins were tested with western blotting.Results: We determined three co-expression modules strongly linked to immune cells. Five characteristic genes (CXCL1, CXCL2, CXCL8, CXCR1 and TK1) were screened and ROC curves proved the excellent diagnostic performance of this LASSO model. Inflammatory chemokines presented widespread up-regulations in serum of Systemic lupus erythematosus patients, demonstrating the activation of inflammatory response. TK1 expression was remarkably elevated in SLE BMSCs than controls. TK1 overexpression enhanced IL-1β expression, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and senescent phenotypes of SLE BMSCs and the opposite results were proved in TK1-silenced SLE BMSCs.Conclusion: Collectively, our findings demonstrate that silencing TK1 alleviates inflammation, growth arrest and senescence in BMSCs of SLE, which highlights TK1 as a promising therapeutic target against SLE.

In order to enable the driverless vehicle formation controller to automatically control the driving of the fleet, an intelligent driverless vehicle control system based on the CAN controller is proposed. Expansion convolution of different expansion rates is used to obtain multi-scale target information and to fuse the feature information at different scales during upsampling to enrich the semantic information. Finally, the driverless CAN bus communication platform was established, the driverless monitoring interface was developed, and the software program was written; experiments on the steering control, speed control, voltage, current, speed, and angular speed acquisition, respectively, were performed. The experimental results show that the average semantic segmentation accuracy of the obstacles in concentrated vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles reached 84.6%, and the detection and segmentation accuracy of the models was good. Therefore, the unmanned intelligent vehicle control system designed in this paper can meet the performance requirements of the vehicle control. No matter whether the given desired path is a straight line or a curve, the unmanned car can complete the path tracking control quickly, stably, and accurately.

Quercetin has numerous functions including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The beneficial effect of quercetin against microcystin-LR (MC-LR)-induced testicular tight junctions (TJs) defects in vitro and in vivo were investigated. Significant reductions in transepithelial electrical resistance, occludin, and zonula occludens-1(ZO-1) levels were detected in the MC-LR-treated TM4 cells, and quercetin attenuated these effects. Interestingly, quercetin suppressed MC-LR-induced phosphorylation of protein kinase B (AKT). It effectively inhibited the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells stimulated by MC-LR. In addition, ROS inhibitors blocked the TJ damage that is dependent on the AKT signaling pathway induced by MC-LR. In conclusion, our results suggest that alleviates MC-LR-impaired TJs by suppressing the ROS-regulated activation of the AKT pathway.

A good turbine casing cooling design should control the thermal stress and maintain a reasonable tip clearance between the turbine blade and the casing. Since the turbine inlet temperature has been increased yearly, the influence of thermal radiation on the temperature of a turbine casing has become more significant. Therefore, the heat transfer characteristics of a turbine casing considering the radiation effect need to be precisely predicted. In this study, a theoretical model is established for describing the heat transfer characteristics of a turbofan casing, and the model’s effectiveness is verified by comparing the numerical and experimental results. Based on the validated model, the effects of single changes of the wall temperature, cooling air temperature, Reynolds number, and surface emissivity on the heat transfer of the casing are discussed. The results show that the increment of cooling air temperature and surface emissivity leads to the enhancement of the average radiative Nusselt number, and the average convective Nusselt number increases as the Reynolds number increases. The emissivity can improve the temperature distribution uniformity of the turbine casing. Finally, a Kriging surrogate model is fitted with 20 sample points to predict the joint effect of multiple parameters on the casing surface Nusselt number. It is found that the Reynolds number has a more significant influence on the average Nusselt number compared with the emissivity and the temperature ratio.

Abstract The effects of applied nitrate on symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legumes are complex. Both inhibition and promotion of nodulation by nitrate have been observed in a dose‐dependent manner. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of nitrate at different concentrations on root nodulation in different genotypes in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Six genotypes were inoculated with the same rhizobial strain and grown hydroponically in growth pouches in a growth chamber and exposed to six nitrate concentrations, including 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mM for 4 weeks. The tested genotypes included three recombinant inbred lines (RILs, 25, 46, and 70) that differed in their responses to nitrogen (based on observations of one field growing season), their parents (Mist and Sanilac—registered varieties), which are different in N‐fixing abilities, and one nonnodulating mutant (R99). Our results showed that small amounts of nitrate (2.5 and 5 mM) promoted nodule formation and increased nodule biomass, compared with plants in the 0 nitrate control treatment. In contrast, nitrate concentrations over 10 mM inhibited nodulation, resulting in reductions in nodule number and nodule biomass. Nodulation was completely inhibited by 15‐mM nitrate in all the genotypes. Regression analyses indicated that 5‐mM nitrate is the optimum concentration for promoting nodulation as measured by the total number of nodules formed, the number of effective nodules formed, and the nodule biomass formed. In contrast, nitrogen fixation was inhibited by all levels of nitrate. No genotypic differences were observed in nodulation among the three RILs and their parental cultivars, but all were significantly different than R99, a nonnodulating mutant.

Melanin synthesis is a defense mechanism that prevents skin damage, but excessive accumulation of melanin occurs in the skin in various reactions such as pigmentation, lentigines, and freckles. Although anti-melanogenic effects have been demonstrated for various naturally occurring marine products that inhibit and control tyrosinase activity, most studies have not been extended to in vivo applications. Phlorofucofuroeckol-A (PFF-A, 12.5–100 µM) isolated from Ecklonia cava has previously been shown to have tyrosinase-mitigative effects in B16F10 cells, but it has not been evaluated in an in vivo model, and its underlying mechanism for anti-melanogenic effects has not been studied. In the present study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of PFF-A for anti-melanogenic effects in an in vivo model. We selected low doses of PFF-A (1.5–15 nM) and investigated their mitigative effects on pigmentation stimulated by α-MSH in vivo and their related-mechanism in an in vitro model. The findings suggest that low-dose PFF-A derived from E. cava suppresses pigmentation in vivo and melanogenesis in vitro. Therefore, this study presents the possibility that PFF-A could be utilized as a new anti-melanogenic agent in the cosmeceutical industries.

In this paper, the development status of lightweight technology of new energy vehicles is analyzed in detail, and the application of lightweight technology in the field of design and research of new energy vehicles is analyzed in depth, including the application of lightweight new technology and lightweight materials, and the specific problems arising from the application of lightweight technology in the field of new energy vehicles are analyzed. Then, the technical content and raw material demand of lightweight new energy vehicles are elaborated in detail, and the significance of lightweight new energy vehicles is analyzed. Finally, some feasible suggestions are put forward for the development of lightweight new energy vehicles.

Diphlorethohydroxycarmalol (DPHC) isolated from Ishige okamurae (IO) showed potential whitening effects against UV-B radiation. However, the components of IO as well as their molecular mechanism against α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) have not yet been investigated. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of Ishophloroglucin A (IPA), a phlorotannin isolated from brown algae IO, and its crude extract (IOE), in melanogenesis in vivo in an α-MSH-induced zebrafish model and in B16F10 melanoma cells in vitro. Molecular docking studies of the phlorotannins were carried out to determine their inhibitory effects and to elucidate their mode of interaction with tyrosinase, a glycoprotein related to melanogenesis. In addition, morphological changes and melanin content decreased in the α-MSH-induced zebrafish model after IPA and IOE treatment. Furthermore, Western blotting results revealed that IPA upregulated the extracellular related protein expression in α-MSH-stimulated B16F10 cells. Hence, these results suggest that IPA isolated from IOE has a potential for use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Blood circulation disorders, such as hyperlipidemia and arteriosclerosis, are not easily cured by dietary supplements, but they can be mitigated. Although Ecklonia cava extract (ECE), as dietary supplements, are associated with improving the conditions, there are not many studies verifying the same. In this study, the beneficial effect of ECE and leaf of Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), which is a well-known dietary supplement, were first confirmed in a diet induced-obese model. Afterwards, 4 phlorotannins were isolated from ECE, and their inhibitory effects on vascular cell dysfunction were validated. Pyrogallol-phloroglucinol-6,6-bieckol (PPB) was selected to be orally administered in two mice models: the diet induced obese model and diet induced hypertension model. After four weeks of administration, the blood pressure of all mice was measured, after which they were subsequently sacrificed. PPB was found to significantly improve blood circulation, including a reduction of adhesion molecule expression, endothelial cell (EC) death, excessive vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and migration, blood pressure, and lipoprotein and cholesterol levels. Based on the excellent efficacy in diet-induced mouse models of obese and hypertension, our results demonstrate that PPB is a valuable active compound from among the phlorotannins that were isolated and it has the potential to be used in functional foods for improving the blood circulation.

Nutraceutical use of algae requires understanding of the diversity and significance of their active compositions for intended activities. Ishige okamurae (I. okamurae) extract is well-known to possess α-glucosidase inhibitory activity; however, studies are needed to investigate its active composition in order to standardize its α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. In this study, we observed the intensity of the dominant compounds of each I. okamurae extract harvested between 2016 and 2017, and the different potency of each I. okamurae extract against α-glucosidase. By comparing the anti-α-glucosidase ability of the dominant compounds, a novel Ishophloroglucin A with highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity was identified and suggested for standardization of anti-α-glucosidase activity in I. okamurae extract. Additionally, a validated analytical method for measurement of Ishophloroglucin A for future standardization of I. okamurae extract was established in this study. We suggest using Ishophloroglucin A to standardize anti-α-glucosidase potency of I. okamurae and propose the significance of standardization based on their composition for effective use of algae as marine-derived nutraceuticals.

Diabetes mellitus causes abnormalities of angiogenesis leading to vascular dysfunction and serious pathologies. Diphlorethohydroxycarmalol (DPHC), which is isolated from Ishige okamurae, is well known for its bioactivities, including antihyperglycemic and protective functions against diabetes-related pathologies. In the present study, the inhibitory effect of DPHC on high glucose-induced angiogenesis was investigated on the human vascular endothelial cell line EA.hy926. DPHC inhibited the cell proliferation, cell migration, and tube formation in cells exposed to 30 mM of glucose to induce angiogenesis. Furthermore, the effect of DPHC against high glucose-induced angiogenesis was evaluated in zebrafish embryos. The treatment of embryos with DPHC suppressed high glucose-induced dilation in the retinal vessel diameter and vessel formation. Moreover, DPHC could inhibit high glucose-induced vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) expression and its downstream signaling cascade. Overall, these findings suggest that DPHC is actively involved in the suppression of high glucose-induced angiogenesis. Hence, DPHC is a potential agent for the development of therapeutics against angiogenesis induced by diabetes.

Plant breeders and agricultural scientists of the 21st century are challenged to increase the yield potentials of crops to feed the growing world population. Climate change, the resultant stresses and increasing nutrient deficiencies are factors that are to be considered in designing modern plant breeding pipelines. Underutilized food legumes have the potential to address these issues and ensure food security in developing nations of the world. Food legumes in the past have drawn limited research funding and technological attention when compared to cereal crops. Physiological breeding strategies that were proven to be successful in cereals are to be adapted to legume crop improvement to realize their potential. The gap between breeders and physiologists should be narrowed by collaborative approaches to understand complex traits in legumes. This review discusses the potential of physiology based approaches in food legume breeding and how they impact yield gains and abiotic stress tolerance in these crops. The influence of roots and root system architectures in food legumes’ breeding is also discussed. Molecular breeding to map the relevant physiological traits and the potentials of gene editing those traits are detailed. It is imperative to unlock the potentials of these underutilized crops to attain sustainable environmental and nutritional food security.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) remains a leading cause of mortalities worldwide, necessitating timely reperfusion to reduce acute mortality. Paradoxically, reperfusion can induce myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which is primarily characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction. Translocator protein (TSPO) participates in multiple cellular events; however, its role in IHD, especially in the process of myocardial I/R injury, has not been well determined. The aim of the present study was to investigate the functional role of TSPO in myocardial I/R injury and dissect the concomitant cellular events involved. This study utilized small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology to knock down TSPO expression. The I/R process was simulated using an anoxia/reoxygenation (A/R) model. The role of TSPO in H9c2 cardiomyocytes was assessed using various techniques, such as Western blotting, Flow cytometry, Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), Immunofluorescence, Co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) and similar methods. It was found that A/R markedly upregulated the expression of TSPO in cardiomyocytes. Inhibition of TSPO improved myocardial cell apoptosis and damage following A/R stimulation. Additionally, targeting TSPO alleviated mitochondrial damage, reduced mitochondrial ROS release and enhanced ATP synthesis following A/R stimulation. It was further confirmed that A/R stimulation induced a significant increase in the expression of pivotal markers [phosporylated-PKR-like ER kinase (PERK)/PERK, activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) and inositol-requiring enzyme 1] involved in the adaptive unfolded protein response, which is accompanied by downstream signaling during endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Notably, TSPO knockdown increased the expression of the aforementioned markers and, subsequently, TSPO was confirmed to interact with ATF6, suggesting that TSPO might play a role in ER stress during myocardial I/R injury. Finally, inhibition of TSPO upregulated mitophagy, as indicated by further decreases in P62 and increases in Parkin and PINK1 levels following A/R stimulation. Together, the results suggest that TSPO plays a multifaceted role in myocardial I/R injury. Understanding TSPO-induced cellular responses could inform targeted therapeutic strategies for patients with IHD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
