Search

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $\gamma$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $\gamma$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $\chi\chi \to \gamma\gamma$ and the decay lifetime for $\chi \to \gamma\nu$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. In the experiments of actively triggering plasma disruption by massive gas injection, the externally applied resonant magnetic perturbation has been used to mitigate the hazard of runaway electron (RE). Motivated by the experiment of multimode coupling to suppress REs on J-TEXT, some typical simulation cases with NIMROD (Non-Ideal MHD with Rotation-Open Discussion) code are carried out to explore the influential mechanism of different relative phases between m/n = 2/1 and m/n = 3/1 magnetic islands on the confinement of REs. Results show that the RE confinement is drastically affected by the relative phase between 2/1 and 3/1 magnetic islands. When the “O point” phase of 2/1 and 3/1 magnetic islands is toroidal 330°, REs can be effectively lost. The fitting curve of the remaining ratio of REs vs. the relative toroidal phase is predicted to approximate a sine-like function dependence. Further studies indicate that the phase difference between coexisting 2/1 and 3/1 islands can affect the radial transport of impurities. The loss of runaway electrons is closely related to the deposition effect of impurity. The impurity is easier to spread into the core region with smaller poloidal phase difference between the radial velocity of impurity and the impurity quantity of Ar.

Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of WCDA for GRB observation. The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

The generation of runaway electrons (REs) is observed during the low-density helium ohmic plasma discharge in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). The growth rate of hard x-ray (HXR) is inversely proportional to the line-average density. Besides, the RE generation in helium plasma is higher than deuterium plasma at the same density, which is obtained by comparing the growth rate of HXR with the same discharge conditions. The potential reason is the higher electron temperature of helium plasma in the same current and electron density plateau. Furthermore, two Alfvén eigenmodes driven by REs have been observed. The frequency evolution of the mode is not fully satisfied with the Alfvén scaling and when extension of the Alfvén frequency is towards 0, the high frequency branch is ~50 kHz. The different spatial position of the two modes and the evolution of the helium concentration could be used to understand deviation between theoretical and experimental observation.

We use 10 years of publicly available IceCube data to investigate the correlations between high-energy neutrinos and various Fermi-LAT gamma-ray samples. This work considers the following gamma-ray samples: the third Fermi-LAT catalog of high-energy sources(3FHL), >100GeV Fermi-LAT events, LAT 12-year source catalog(4FGL), the fourth catalog of active galactic nuclei(4LAC) and subsets of these samples. For each sample, both a single-source analysis and a stacking analysis are performed. We find no indication that the sources in these samples produce significant high-energy neutrinos. From the null search results, we infer that each source population can produce no more than ~2.5%-36%(at the 95% confidence level, for a spectral index of -2.5) of the IceCube's diffuse neutrino flux. We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) detection of the $\gamma$-ray emission toward the massive star forming region of Carina Nebula Complex (CNC). Using the latest source catalog and diffuse background models, we found that the GeV $\gamma$-ray emission in this region can be resolved into three different components. The GeV $\gamma$-ray emission from the central point source is considered to originate from the Eta Carina ($\eta$ Car). We further found the diffuse GeV $\gamma$-ray emission around the CNC which can be modelled by two Gaussian disks with radii of 0.4\deg (region A) and 0.75\deg (region B), respectively. The GeV $\gamma$-ray emission from both the regions A and B have good spatial consistency with the derived molecular gas in projection on the sky. The GeV $\gamma$-ray emission of region A reveals a characteristic spectral shape of the pion-decay process, which indicates that the $\gamma$-rays are produced by the interactions of hadronic cosmic rays with ambient gas. The $\gamma$-rays spectrum of region B has a hard photon index of 2.12 $\pm$ 0.02, which is similar to other young massive star clusters. We argue that the diffuse GeV $\gamma$-ray emission in region A and region B likely originate from the interaction of accelerated protons in clusters with the ambient gas., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons—cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3–6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators. Observations of γ-rays with energies up to 1.4 PeV find that 12 sources in the Galaxy are PeVatrons, one of which is the Crab Nebula.

Strict registration is critical for imaging polarimetry; a highly accurate registration approach to the coronal image and imaging polarimetry of the Fe 6374 Å red coronal line have been researched in this paper. In order to improve the registration accuracy, this paper proposes the idea of image enhancement based on blind deconvolution combined with noise-adaptive fuzzy equalization algorithms. After image enhancement, the cross-correlation registration algorithm achieves better results. To diagnose a low-temperature corona, the polarization brightness of the red coronal line data and the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO)/KCor data are compared to study the structural features and polarization information of the inner corona. We found that the polarization brightness radiation of the red coronal line has overall features similar to that of the MLSO/KCor data, but it has more detailed features, such as the cavity, polar plume, and interplume characteristics. Active regions, polar plumes, and interplumes show similar performance in red coronal line intensity, polarization brightness, degree of linear polarization, K-corona, and electron density along with the radial height. An interesting finding is that the polarization brightness of the red coronal line changes drastically along with the radial height across the cavity above the solar west limb, while neither the K-corona nor the electron density changes obviously. This seems to be a piece of possible evidence indicating that the red coronal line is not unpolarized in the cavity region.

Ultracompact minihalo (UCMH) is a special type of dark matter halo with a very steep density profile which may form in the early universe seeded by an overdense region or a primordial black hole. Constraints on its abundance give valuable information on the power spectrum of primordial perturbation. In this work, we update the constraints on the UCMH abundance in the universe using the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) observation. Comparing to previous works, we adopt the updated Fermi-LAT EGB measurement and derive constraints based on a full consideration of the astrophysical contributions. With these improvements, we place constraints on UCMH abundance 1-2 orders of magnitude better than previous results. PKS 1413+135, a compact symmetric object (CSO) with a two-side pc-scale structure in its miniature radio morphology, is spatially associated with 4FGL J1416.1+1320 and recently detected with MAGIC telescopes. We comprehensively analyze its X-ray and GeV gamma-ray observation data for revealing its high energy radiation physics. It is found that the source is in a low-flux stage before MJD 58500 and experiences violent outbursts after MJD 58500 in the GeV band. The flux at 10 GeV varies ~3 orders of magnitude, and the GeV-flux variation is accompanied by the clear spectral variation, which is characterized as a soft log-parabola spectrum in the low-flux state and a hard power-law spectrum in the bright flares. The variability amplitude of X-rays is lower than that of gamma-rays, and no correlation of variability between gamma-rays and X-rays is observed. Fitting the broadband spectral energy distribution during a GeV outburst with a multi-zone leptonic model, we show that the GeV gamma-rays are attributed to the external Compton process while the X-rays are hybrid of several components. The predicted TeV gamma-ray flux during the GeV outburst is consistent with the detection of MAGIC telescopes. These results, together with its CSO radio morphology, imply that PKS 1413+135 has the episodic nuclear jet activities. The weak gamma-ray emission before MJD 58500 may be from its sub-pc-/pc-scale jet component powered by previous activities, and the violent outbursts with short-timescale variability after MJD 58500 could be attributed to the recently restarted jet activity., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Previously, we have shown in Li et al. (2018) that very weak $\gamma$-ray excesses ($\sim 2\sigma$) appear in some Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs, including candidates) and the combination analysis of 12 nearby dSphs yields a local significance of $>4\sigma$. In this work, we adopt a longer data set (i.e., the 12 years of Fermi-LAT data), the latest Fermi-LAT software as well as background models to update the searches of $\gamma$-ray emission from these sources. Very weak $\gamma$-ray excesses ($>$ 2 $\sigma$) are found in the directions of three dSphs, including Reticulum II, Bootes II and Willman 1. In the direction of Reticulum II, the peak TS value of the excess reaches $\sim$11. However, different from the previous analysis with the 9 years of Fermi-LAT data, now the location of the gamma-ray emission is significantly away from the center of Reticulum II because of the enhancement of "offset" $\gamma$-rays above 10 GeV since 2017. The detected weak excess is likely due to the contamination of an astrophysical $\gamma$-ray source with a TS value of $\sim 22$, irrelevant to the dark matter inside Reticulum II. The possible excesses in the directions of Bootes II and Willman 1 are weaker with lower peak TS values ($\sim 7$). If interpreted as annihilation of dark matter particles into $\tau^+\tau^-$, the dark mass mass of $m_\chi \sim 14$ GeV and $\sim 80$ GeV are found for Bootes II and Willman 1, respectively. We report the discovery of a new unidentified extended $\gamma$-ray source in the Galactic plane named LHAASO J0341+5258 with a pre-trial significance of 8.2 standard deviations above 25 TeV. The best fit position is R.A.$=55.34^{\circ}\pm0.11^{\circ}$ and Dec$=52.97^{\circ}\pm0.07^{\circ}$. The angular size of LHAASO J0341+5258 is $0.29^\circ \pm 0.06^\circ_{stat} \pm0.02^\circ_{sys}$. The flux above 25 TeV is about $20\%$ of the flux of Crab Nebula. Although a power-law fit of the spectrum from 10 TeV to 200 TeV with the photon index $\alpha=2.98 \pm 0.19_{stat} \pm 0.02_{sys}$ is not excluded, the LHAASO data together with the flux upper limit at 10 GeV set by the Fermi LAT observation, indicate a noticeable steepening of an initially hard power-law spectrum %($\alpha \leq 1.75$) spectrum with a cutoff at $\approx 50$ TeV. We briefly discuss the origin of UHE gamma-rays. The lack of an energetic pulsar and a young SNR inside or in the vicinity of LHAASO J0341+5258 challenge, but do not exclude both the leptonic and hadronic scenarios of gamma-ray production., Comment: Accepted by APJL

We present a self-consistent paradigm for interpreting the striking features of nearby low-luminosity GRB~190829A. Its prompt gamma-ray lightcurve has two separated pulses. We propose that the interaction of the hard prompt gamma-ray photons ($E_p= 624_{-303}^{+2432}$ keV) of its initial pulse with the dusty medium ($A_{\rm V}=2.33$) does not only result in the second soft gamma-ray pulse ($E_p\sim 12$ keV), but also makes a pre-accelerated $e^{\pm}$-rich medium shell via the $\gamma\gamma$ annihilation.In this paradigm, we show that the observed radio, optical, and X-ray afterglow lightcurves are well fit with the forward shock model. Its jet is almost isotropic ($\theta_j>1.0$ rad) with a Lorentz factor of $\sim 35$, and the electron density of the $e^{\pm}$-rich medium shell is $\sim 15$ cm$^{-3}$, about 7~times higher than the electron density of its normal surrounding medium. The GRB ejecta catches up with and propagates into the $e^{\pm}$-rich medium shell at a region of $R=(4.07-6.46)\times 10^{16}~\rm cm$, resulting in a bright afterglow bump at $\sim 10^3$ seconds post the GRB trigger. The predicted very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the synchrotron self-Compton process agrees with the H.E.S.S. observation. The derived broadband spectral energy distribution shows that GRB~190829A like nearby GRBs would be promising targets of the VHE gamma-ray telescopes, such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Arrays)., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 tables; the original version was submitted to ApJ on Feb. 20, 2021 and currently is under review. The $\gamma$-ray emission properties of CTD 135, a typical compact symmetric object (CSO), are investigated with $\sim$11-year Fermi/LAT observations. We show that it has bright and significantly variable GeV emission, with the $\gamma$-ray luminosity of $L_{\gamma}\sim10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and a variation index of TS$_{\rm var}=1002$. A quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) with a periodicity of $\sim$460 days is detected in the global 95\% false-alarm level. These $\gamma$-ray emission features are similar to that of blazars. Its broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) can be attributed to the radiations of the relativistic electrons accelerated in the core region and the extended region. The SED modeling shows that the $\gamma$-rays are from the core region, which has a Doppler boosting factor of $\delta\sim10.8$ and relativistically moves with a small viewing angle, being similar to blazar jets. On the base of the analysis results, we propose that the episodic activity of the central engine in CTD 135 results in a blazar-like jet and the bubble-like lobes as the Fermi bubbles in the Galaxy. The strong $\gamma$-ray emission with obvious variability is from the jet radiations and the symmetric radio structure is attributed to the bubbles. The jet radiation power and disk luminosity in units of Eddington luminosity of CTD 135 follow the same relation as other young radio galaxies, indicating that its jet radiation may be also driven by the Eddington ratio., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in RAA

A tiny fraction of observed gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may be lensed. The time delays induced by the gravitational lensing are milliseconds to seconds if the point lenses are intermediate-mass black holes. The prompt emission of the lensed GRBs, in principle, should have repeated pulses with identical light curves and spectra but different fluxes and slightly offset positions. In this work, we search for such candidates within the GRBs detected by Fermi/GBM, Swift/BAT, and HXMT/HE and report the identification of an attractive event GRB 200716C that consists of two pulses. Both the autocorrelation analysis and the Bayesian inference of the prompt emission light curve are in favor of the gravitational lensing scenario. Moreover, the spectral properties of the two pulses are rather similar and follow the so-called Amati relation of short GRBs rather than long duration bursts. The measured flux ratios between the two pulses are nearly constant in all channels, as expected from gravitational lensing. We therefore suggest that the long duration burst GRB 200716C was a short event being lensed. The redshifted mass of the lens was estimated to be $4.25^{+2.46}_{-1.36}$ $\times$ $10^5$ $M_{\odot}$ (90$\%$ credibility). Axion-like particles (ALPs) provide a feasible explanation for the observed lower TeV opacity of the Universe. If the anomaly TeV transparency is caused by ALPs, then the fluxes of distant extragalactic sources will be enhanced at photon energies beyond TeV, resulting in an enhancement of the observed extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) spectrum. In this work, we have investigated the ALP modulation on the EGB spectrum at TeV energies. Our results show that in the most optimistic case, the existence of ALPs can cause the EGB spectrum to greatly deviate from the prediction of a pure extragalactic-background-light (EBL) absorption scenario. The deviation occurs at approximately $\gtrsim$1 TeV, and the current EGB measurements by Fermi-LAT cannot identify such an effect. We also find that most of the sensitive ALP parameters have been ruled out by existing constraints, leaving only a small region of unrestricted parameters that can be probed using the EGB effect investigated in this work. With the possible spacial association to the Fermi/LAT source 3FGL J1330.0–3818, TOL 1326–379 may be the first one that is identified as a γ-ray emitting Fanaroff–Riley type 0 radio galaxy (FR0 RG). We analyze the ∼12 yr Fermi/LAT observation data of this γ-ray source and examine its association to TOL 1326–379. We show that the γ-ray source (named as J1331.0–3818) is tentatively detected with a TS value of 28.7, 3FGL J1330.0–3818 is out of the 95% containment of J1331.0–3818, and their positions are spatially separated ∼0.°2. 4FGL J1331.3–3818 falls into the 68% containment of J1331.0–3818, suggesting that our result agrees with that reported in the Fourth Fermi LAT Source Catalog. TOL 1326–379 is out of the 95% containment of J1331.0–3818, and their positions are spatially separated ∼0.°4, indicating that the association between J1331.0–3818 and TOL 1326–379 is quite ambiguous. However, we do not find other possible potential radio or X-ray counterpart within the circle centered at J1331.0–3818 with a radius of 0.°4. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of TOL 1326–379 shows a bimodal feature as seen in the γ-ray emitting RGs. We fit the SED with the one-zone leptonic model and find that the average energy spectrum of J1331.0–3818 agrees with the model prediction. Assuming that J1331.0–3818 is an unidentified γ-ray source, we derive the upper-limit of the γ-ray flux for TOL 1326–379. It is not tight enough to exclude this possibility with the SED modeling. Based on these results, we cautiously argue that the γ-ray source J1331.0–3818 is associated with TOL 1326–379 and its jet radiation physic is similar to those γ-ray emitting RGs.

The main scientific goal of the LHAASO WFCTA experiment is to measure the cosmic ray energy spectra and composition from 10 TeV to 1 EeV. Cherenkov photons in the extensive air shower measured by the SiPM camera of Cherenkov telescopes can be used to reconstruct the cosmic ray energy. The absolute calibration of the camera is a crucial step to achieve the accurate measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum. A multi-wavelength cylindrical illuminator based on LEDs is developed and mounted inside the telescope to calibrate and monitor the camera, and the illuminator’s stability is better than 0.5% under the temperature variation from -26 to 26 ° C. A portable probe with a single photoelectron resolution of 21.6% is developed. After calibration by National Institute of Metrology, China (NIM), the probe is taken to the LHAASO site to measure the absolute photon density of the cylindrical illuminator inside the telescope. Based on the illuminator with known photon density, the photon conversion factor of the camera can be calibrated, and the overall calibration uncertainty is less than 2.6%.

GRB 200219A is a short gamma-ray burst (GRB) with an extended emission (EE) lasting $\sim 90$s. By analyzing data observed with the {\em Swift}/BAT and {\em Fermi}/GBM, we find that a cutoff power-law model can adequately fit the spectra of the initial short pulse with $\rm E_{p}=1387^{+232}_{-134}$ keV. More interestingly, together with the EE component and early X-ray data, it exhibits plateau emission smoothly connected with a $\sim t^{-1}$ segment and followed by an extremely steep decay. The short GRB composed of those three segments is unique in the {\em Swift} era and is very difficult to explain with the standard internal/external shock model of a black hole central engine, but could be consistent with the prediction of a magnetar central engine from the merger of an NS binary. We suggest that the plateau emission followed by a $\sim t^{-1}$ decay phase is powered by the spin-down of a millisecond magnetar, which loses its rotation energy via GW quadrupole radiation. Then, the abrupt drop decay is caused by the magnetar collapsing into a black hole before switching to EM-dominated emission. This is the first short GRB for which the X-ray emission has such an intriguing feature powered by a magnetar via GW-dominated radiation. In this work, we re-analyze the Fermi-LAT observation of NGC 1275 to search for axion-like particle (ALP) effects and constrain ALP parameters. Instead of fitting the observed spectrum with ALP models, we adopt an alternative method for the analysis of this source which calculates the irregularity of the spectrum. With the newly used method, we find no spectral oscillation for the NGC 1275 and rule out couplings $g_{a\gamma}>3\times10^{-12}\,{\rm GeV^{-1}}$ around ALP mass of $m_a\sim$ 1 neV at 95\% confidence level, which is more stringent than the previous results. We also show that the constraints can be further improved by combining the observation of PKS 2155-304. We suggest that with more sources taken into account, we could obtain a much wider exclusion region., Comment: Conclusion not included in the accepted version have been added in the last paragraph of Section 5

The conversion between photons and axionlike particles (ALPs) in the Milky Way magnetic field could result in the detectable oscillation phenomena in $\gamma$-ray spectra of Galactic sources. In this work, the GeV (Fermi-LAT) and TeV (MAGIC/VERITAS/H.E.S.S.) data of three bright supernova remnants (SNRs, ie. IC443, W51C and W49B) have been adopted together to search such the oscillation effect. Different from our previous analysis of the sole Fermi-LAT data of IC443, we do not find any reliable signal for the photon-ALP oscillation in the joint broadband spectrum of each SNR. The reason for the inconsistence is that in this work we use the latest revision (P8R3) of Fermi-LAT data, updated diffuse emission templates and the new version of the source catalog (4FGL), which lead to some modification of the GeV spectrum of IC443. Then we set constraints on ALP parameters based on the combined analysis of all the three sources. Though these constraints are somewhat weaker than limits from the CAST experiment and globular clusters, they are supportive of and complementary to these other results., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Accepted into Physical Review D

DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) measures the gamma rays with an excellent energy resolution. Therefore, DAMPE is suitable for the search of gamma-ray line emission that could arise from dark matter annihilation or decay. We have analyzed the Galactic center and nearby galaxy clusters with 3 years of DAMPE data. No statistically significant line is identified between 10 GeV and 300 GeV and we present the 95% confidence limits of the velocity-averaged cross section for dark matter particle annihilation into a pair of gamma rays.

We analyze the LIGO/Virgo GWTC-2 catalog to study the primary mass distribution of the merging black holes. We perform hierarchical Bayesian analysis, and examine whether the mass distribution has a sharp cutoff for primary black hole masses below $65 M_\odot$, as predicted in pulsational pair instability supernova model. We construct two empirical mass functions. One is a piece-wise function with two power-law segments jointed by a sudden drop. The other consists of a main truncated power-law component, a Gaussian component, and a third very massive component. Both models can reasonably fit the data and a sharp drop of the mass distribution is found at $\sim 50M_\odot$, suggesting that the majority of the observed black holes can be explained by the stellar evolution scenarios in which the pulsational pair-instability process takes place. In order to search for the linelike signals in the Fermi-LAT data, we have analyzed totally 49152 regions of interest (ROIs) that cover the whole sky. No ROI displays a line signal with test statistic (TS) value above 25, while for 50 ROIs weak linelike excesses with $\mathrm{TS}g16$ are presented. The intrinsic significances of these potential signals are further reduced by the large trial factor introduced in such kind of analysis. For the largest TS value of 24.3 derived in our analysis, the corresponding global significance is only $0.54\ensuremath{\sigma}$. We thus do not find any significant linelike signal and set up constraints on the cross section of dark matter annihilating to gamma-ray lines, ${⟨\ensuremath{\sigma}v⟩}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$.

To study the disc central surface brightness ($\mu_0$) distribution in optical and near-infrared bands, we select 708 disc-dominated galaxies within a fixed distance of 57 Mpc from SDSS DR7 and UKIDSS DR10. Then we fit $\mu_0$ distribution by using single and double Gaussian profiles with an optimal bin size for the final sample of 538 galaxies in optical $griz$ bands and near-infrared $YJHK$ bands. Among the 8 bands, we find that $\mu_{0}$ distribution in optical bands can not be much better fitted with double Gaussian profiles. However, for all the near-infrared bands, the evidence of being better fitted by using double Gaussian profiles is positive. Especially for $K$ band, the evidence of a double Gaussian profile being better than a single Gaussian profile for $\mu_{0}$ distribution is very strong, the reliability of which can be approved by 1000 times test for our sample. No dust extinction correction is applied. The difference of $\mu_{0}$ distribution between optical and near-infrared bands could be caused by the effect of dust extinction in optical bands. Due to the sample selection criteria, our sample is not absolutely complete. However, the sample incompleteness does not change the double Gaussian distribution of $\mu_{0}$ in $K$ band. Furthermore, we discuss some possible reasons for the fitting results of $\mu_{0}$ distribution in $K$ band. Conclusively, the double Gaussian distribution of $\mu_{0}$ in $K$ band for our sample may depend on bulge-to-disk ratio, color and disk scalelength, rather than the inclination of sample galaxies, bin size and statistical fluctuations., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, published in the MNRAS journal

We report the detection of high-energy gamma-ray signal towards the young star-forming region, W40. Using 10-year Pass 8 data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), we extracted an extended gamma-ray excess region with a significance of about 18sigma. The radiation has a spectrum with a photon index of 2.49 +/- 0.01. The spatial correlation with the ionized gas content favors the hadronic origin of the gamma-ray emission. The total cosmic-ray (CR) proton energy in the gamma-ray production region is estimated to be the order of 10^47 erg. However, this could be a small fraction of the total energy released in cosmic rays (CRs) by local accelerators, presumably by massive stars, over the lifetime of the system. If so, W40, together with earlier detections of gamma-rays from Cygnus cocoon, Westerlund 1, Westerlund 2, NGC 3603, and 30 Dor C, supports the hypothesis that young star clusters are effective CR factories. The unique aspect of this result is that the gamma-ray emission is detected, for the first time, from a stellar cluster itself, rather than from the surrounding "cocoons"., 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Many galaxy clusters have giant halos of non-thermal radio emission, indicating the presence of relativistic electrons in the clusters. Relativistic protons may also be accelerated by merger and/or accretion shocks in galaxy clusters. These cosmic-ray (CR) electrons and/or protons are expected to produce gamma-rays through inverse-Compton scatterings or inelastic $pp$ collisions respectively. Despite of intense efforts in searching for high-energy gamma-ray emission from galaxy clusters, conclusive evidence is still missing so far. Here we report the discovery of $\ge 200$ MeV gamma-ray emission from the Coma cluster direction with an unbinned likelihood analysis of the 9 years of {\it Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data. The gamma-ray emission shows a spatial morphology roughly coincident with the giant radio halo, with an apparent excess at the southwest of the cluster. Using the test statistic analysis, we further find tentative evidence that the gamma-ray emission at the Coma center is spatially extended. The extended component has an integral energy flux of $\sim 2\times 10^{-12}{\rm \ erg\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}}$ in the energy range of 0.2 - 300 GeV and the spectrum is soft with a photon index of $\simeq-2.7$. Interpreting the gamma-ray emission as arising from CR proton interaction, we find that the volume-averaged value of the CR to thermal pressure ratio in the Coma cluster is about $\sim 2\%$. The spectral evolution and spectral lag behavior of 92 bright pulses from 84 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Fermi GBM telescope are studied. These pulses can be classified into hard-to-soft pulses (H2S, 64/92), H2S-dominated-tracking pulses (21/92), and other tracking pulses (7/92). We focus on the relationship between spectral evolution and spectral lags of H2S and H2S-dominated-tracking pulses. %in hard-to-soft pulses (H2S, 64/92) and H2S-dominating-tracking (21/92) pulses. The main trend of spectral evolution (lag behavior) is estimated with $\log E_p\propto k_E\log(t+t_0)$ (${\hat{\tau}} \propto k_{\hat{\tau}}\log E$), where $E_p$ is the peak photon energy in the radiation spectrum, $t+t_0$ is the observer time relative to the beginning of pulse $-t_0$, and ${\hat{\tau}}$ is the spectral lag of photons with energy $E$ with respect to the energy band $8$-$25$ keV. For H2S and H2S-dominated-tracking pulses, a weak correlation between $k_{{\hat{\tau}}}/W$ and $k_E$ is found, where $W$ is the pulse width. We also study the spectral lag behavior with peak time $t_{\rm p_E}$ of pulses for 30 well-shaped pulses and estimate the main trend of the spectral lag behavior with $\log t_{\rm p_E}\propto k_{t_p}\log E$. It is found that $k_{t_p}$ is correlated with $k_E$. We perform simulations under a phenomenological model of spectral evolution, and find that these correlations are reproduced. We then conclude that spectral lags are closely related to spectral evolution within the pulse. The most natural explanation of these observations is that the emission is from the electrons in the same fluid unit at an emission site moving away from the central engine, as expected in the models invoking magnetic dissipation in a moderately-high-$\sigma$ outflow., Comment: 58 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. The observation of a special spectral feature in the gamma-ray data would be one of the best ways to identify dark matter (DM). The box-shaped gamma-ray spectra could be generated by the decay of intermediate particles produced by DM annihilation or decay. It provides another kind of signal that can be relatively easily distinguished from astrophysical backgrounds besides the linelike signals. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are expected to be dominated by DM and may be one of the most promising targets for indirect DM searches. In this paper, we study the box-shaped DM signals with Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We analyze 106 months of Fermi-LAT data to derive the upper limits on the annihilation cross section or the decay timescale of DM. In addition, we compare the results for different sample selections and DM density distributions. We expect that more dwarf spheroidal galaxies will be found and the sensitivity of box-shaped gamma-ray signal searches will be significantly improved in the future.

Axionlike-particles (ALPs) are one promising type of dark matter candidate particle that may generate detectable effects on $\gamma$-ray spectra other than the canonical weakly interacting massive particles. In this work we search for such oscillation effects in the spectra of supernova remnants caused by the photon-ALP conversion, using the Fermi Large Area Telescope data. Three bright supernova remnants, IC443, W44, and W51C, are analyzed. The inclusion of photon-ALP oscillations yields an improved fit to the $\gamma$-ray spectrum of IC443, which gives a statistical significance of $4.2\sigma$ in favor of such spectral oscillation. However, the best-fit parameters of ALPs ($m_{a}=6.6\,{\rm neV}$, $g_{a\gamma}=13.4 \times 10^{-11}\,{\rm GeV}^{-1}$) are in tension with the upper bound ($g_{a\gamma}< 6.6 \times 10^{-11}\,{\rm GeV}^{-1}$) set by the CAST experiment. It is difficult to explain the results using the systematic uncertainties of the flux measurements. We speculate that the "irregularity" displayed in the spectrum of IC443 may be due to the superposition of the emission from different parts of the remnant.

The radiation mechanism of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains an open question. Although their spectra are usually well fitted with the empirical Band function, which is widely believed to be fully non-thermal and interpreted as an optically thin synchrotron emission, accumulating evidence shows that a thermal component actually exists. In this paper, a multi-color blackbody (mBB) model is proposed for the time-integrated spectrum of GRB 081221 by assuming a power-law distribution of the thermal luminosities with temperature, which manifests photospheric emissions from a different radius and/or angle. The effects of the minimum temperature $kT_{\min }$, the maximum temperature $kT_{\max }$ and the power law index $m$ of the luminosity distribution of an mBB are discussed. The fitting to the time-integrated spectrum during the bright phase (from 20s to 30s since the trigger) of GRB 081221 by the mBB model yields $kT_{\min }$ = $4.4\pm 0.3$ keV, $kT_{\max }$ = 57.0 $_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ keV, and $m=-0.46_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$. When the time bin is small enough, the time-resolved spectra of GRB 081221 are well fitted with a series of single-temperature blackbodies. Our results imply the prompt emission of GRB 081221 is dominated by the photosphere emission and its time-integrated spectrum is a superposition of pure blackbody components at different times, indicating that some empirical Band spectra may be interpreted as mBB if the temperature is widely distributed., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ, 23 pages, 6 figures

The axion-like particle (ALP)-photon mixing in the magnetic field around $\gamma$-ray sources or along the line-of-sight could induce oscillation between photons and ALPs, which then causes irregularities in the $\gamma$-ray spectra. In this work we try to search for such spectral irregularities in the spectrum of PKS $2155-304$ using 8.6 years of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) data. No significant evidence for the presence of ALP-photon oscillation is obtained, and the parameter space of ALPs is constrained. The exclusion region sensitively depends on the poorly known magnetic field of host galaxy cluster of PKS $2155-304$. If the magnetic field is as high as $\sim 10~{\rm \mu G}$, the "hole"-like parameter region allowed in Ref.~\cite{Fermi} can be ruled out., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, version accepted by Physical Review D

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), also known as Wukong in China, launched on December 17, 2015, is a new high energy cosmic ray and {\gamma}-ray satellite-borne observatory in space. One of the main scientific goals of DAMPE is to observe GeV-TeV high energy {\gamma}-rays with accurate energy, angular, and time resolution, to indirectly search for dark matter particles and for the study of high energy astrophysics. Due to the comparatively higher fluxes of charged cosmic rays with respect to {\gamma}-rays, it is challenging to identify {\gamma}-rays with sufficiently high efficiency minimizing the amount of charged cosmic ray contamination. In this work we present a method to identify {\gamma}-rays in DAMPE data based on Monte Carlo simulations, using the powerful electromagnetic/hadronic shower discrimination provided by the calorimeter and the veto detection of charged particles provided by the plastic scintillation detector. Monte Carlo simulations show that after this selection the number of electrons and protons that contaminate the selected {\gamma}-ray events at $\sim10$ GeV amounts to less than 1% of the selected sample. Finally, we use flight data to verify the effectiveness of the method by highlighting known {\gamma}-ray sources in the sky and by reconstructing preliminary light curves of the Geminga pulsar., Comment: 15 pages,16 figures

GRB 170817A is the first short gamma-ray burst (GRB) with direct detection of the gravitational-wave radiation and also the spectroscopically identified macronova emission (i.e., AT 2017gfo). The prompt emission of this burst, however, is underluminous in comparison with the other short GRBs with known redshift. In this work, we examine whether GRB 170817A is indeed unique. We firstly show that GRB 130603B/macronova may be the on-axis "analogs" of GRB 170817A/AT 2017gfo, and the extremely dim { but long-lasting} afterglow emission of GRB 170817A may suggest a low number density ($\sim 10^{-5}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$) of its circumburst medium { and a structured outflow}. We then discuss whether GRB 070923, GRB 080121, GRB 090417A, GRB 111005A, and GRB 170817A form a new group of very nearby underluminous GRBs originated from neutron star mergers. If the short events GRB 070923, GRB 080121, and GRB 090417A are indeed at a redshift of $\sim 0.076,~0.046,~0.088$, respectively, their isotropic energies of the prompt emission are $\sim 10^{47}$ erg and thus comparable to the other two events. The non-detection of optical counterparts of GRB 070923, GRB 080121, GRB 090417A, and GRB 111005A, however, strongly suggests that the macronovae from neutron star mergers are significantly diverse in luminosities or, alternatively, there is the other origin channel (for instance, the white dwarf and black hole mergers). We finally suggest that GW170817/GRB 170817A are likely not alone and similar events will be detected by the upgraded/upcoming gravitational-wave detectors and the electromagnetic monitors., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, published in ApJL 853 L10

This paper designs the control strategy of working mode conversion from stoichiometric homogeneous mixture to lean homogeneous mixture. First of all, after the types and parameters of electric hardware were selected in this system, a complete circuit layout of engine control system was designed, which used microcontroller named MC9S12XDP512 as control chip and the test bench was built. Then, we adjust the fuel injection pulse width and throttle opening to realize lean burn (lambda = 1.4) of torque being 40N.m at speed of 2500 r / min, and adjust injection timing to find the best injection timing which is 350 crank angle degree, and adjust the ignition advance angle to find the best ignition advance angle which is 13 crank angle degree. Finally, the work mode conversion was completed by the optimal parameters linear interpolation, reducing the fuel injection pulse width and increasing the throttle opening at the same time.

DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a high energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray telescope sensitive in energies from ∼1 GeV to ∼10 TeV. After beyond one year’s on-orbit operation, tens of sources including pulsars (PSR), active galaxy nuclei (AGN), supernova remnants (SNR) etc. have been identified in the DAMPE gamma-ray sky. Here we present the preliminary analysis results of DAMPE observation of some selected bright sources, including their fluxes, test statistic values, spectra and light curves.

Variable high energy gamma-ray emission reveals violent phenomena of cosmic accelerators, such as supermassive black holes, gamma-ray bursts, and probably gravitational wave bursts. The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is China's first space science mission, dedicating to measuring high energy cosmic rays, electrons, and photons with high energy resolution. We report a search for variable gamma-ray emission with nearly 1.5 year DAMPE data. Two candidate variable sources, associated with active galactic nuclei CTA 102 and 3C 454.3, are found. We also search for potential short-term clusterings of arrival time of photons, and find dozens of photon pairs, one photon triple and one quadruple.

As one of the important targets of the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), the GeV gamma- ray observations of DAMPE with good angular resolution, high energy resolution and high back- ground rejection facilitate the search of fine structures in the spectra of gamma-ray sources. In this work we summarize the performance of DAMPE for gamma-ray detection using simulation data, including the effective area, angular resolution and energy resolution.

Milky Way-like galaxies are predicted to host a very large number of dark matter subhalos. Some massive and nearby subhalos could generate detectable gamma-rays, appearing as unidentified, spatially-extended and stable gamma-ray sources. We search for such sources in the third Fermi Large Area Telescope source List (3FGL) and report the identification of a new candidate, 3FGL J1924.8-1034. With the Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data, we find that 3FGL J1924.8-1034 is spatially-extended at a high confidence level of $5.4\sigma$, with a best-fit extension radius of $\sim0.15^{\circ}$. No significant variability has been found and its gamma-ray spectrum is well fitted by the dark matter annihilation into $b\bar{b}$ with a mass of $\sim 43$ GeV. All these facts make 3FGL J1924.8-1034 a possible dark matter subhalo candidate. However, due to the limited angular resolution, the possibility of that the spatial extension of 3FGL J1924.8-1034 is caused by the contamination from the other un-resolved point source can not be ruled out., Comment: 10 pages including 5 figures and 1 table, accepted for publication in Phys. GRB 111005A, one long duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) occurred within a metal-rich environment that lacks massive stars with $M_{\rm ZAMS}\geq 15M_\odot$, is not coincident with supernova emission down to stringent limit and thus should be classified as a "long-short" GRB (lsGRB; also known as SN-less long GRB or hybrid GRB), like GRB 060505 and GRB 060614. In this work we show that in the neutron star merger model, the non-detection of the optical/infrared emission of GRB 111005A requires a sub-relativistic neutron-rich ejecta with the mass of $\leq 0.01~M_\odot$, (significantly) less massive than that of GRB 130603B, GRB 060614 and GRB 050709. The lsGRBs are found to have a high rate density and the neutron star merger origin model can be unambiguously tested by the joint observations of the second generation gravitational wave (GW) detectors and the full-sky gamma-ray monitors such as Fermi-GBM and the proposing GECAM. If no lsGRB/GW association is observed in 2020s, alternative scenarios have to be systematically investigated. With the detailed environmental information achievable for the very-nearby events, a novel kind of merger or explosion origin may be identified., Comment: Published in ApJL

On 17 August 2017, a gravitational wave event (GW170817) and an associated short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) from a binary neutron star merger had been detected. The followup optical/infrared observations also identified the macronova/kilonova emission (AT2017gfo). In this work we discuss some implications of the remarkable GW170817/GRB 170817A/AT2017gfo association. We show that the $\sim 1.7$s time delay between the gravitational wave (GW) and GRB signals imposes very tight constraint on the superluminal movement of gravitational waves (i.e., the relative departure of GW velocity from the speed of light is $\leq 4.3\times 10^{-16}$) or the possible violation of weak equivalence principle (i.e., the difference of the gamma-ray and GW trajectories in the gravitational field of the galaxy and the local universe should be within a factor of $\sim 3.4\times 10^{-9}$). The so-called Dark Matter Emulators and a class of contender models for cosmic acceleration ("Covariant Galileon") are ruled out, too. The successful identification of Lanthanide elements in the macronova/kilonova spectrum also excludes the possibility that the progenitors of GRB 170817A are a binary strange star system. The high neutron star merger rate (inferred from both the local sGRB data and the gravitational wave data) together with the significant ejected mass strongly suggest that such mergers are the prime sites of heavy r-process nucleosynthesis., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJL

The modeling of Li-Paczy\'{n}ski macronova/kilonova signals gives reasonable estimate on the neutron-rich material ejected during the neutron star mergers. Usually the accretion disk is more massive than the macronova ejecta, with which the efficiencies of converting the disk mass into prompt emission of three merger-driven GRBs can hence be directly constrained. Supposing the macronovae/kilonovae associated with GRB 050709, GRB 060614 and GRB 130603B arose from radioactive decay of the r-process material, the upper limit on energy conversion efficiencies are found to be as low as $\sim 10^{-6}-10^{-4}$. Moreover, for all three events, neutrino annihilation is likely powerful enough to account for the brief gamma-ray flashes. Neutrino annihilation can also explain the "extended" emission lasting $\sim 100$ s in GRB 050709, but does not work for the one in GRB 060614. The mono-frequency peak luminosity and the corresponding photon energy of the time-integrated (L-p(s), E-p(s)) and peak time (L-p(t), E-p(t)) nu f(nu) spectra were derived for a sample of 38 redshift-known Fermi GRBs by fitting the spectra with the Band function. It was found that E-p(t) is generally consistent with E-p(s), and L-p(t) is averagely three times larger than L-p(s). The slope of the L-p(t) - E-p(t), relation was consistent with that of the L-p(s) - E-p(s) relation. The photon indices in the peak time spectrum, particularly, the index of the low energy end was, were statistically larger than that in the time-integrated spectrum. These results indicate that L-p(s) and E-p(s) are dominated by L-p(t) and E-p(t) respectively. The difference of the spectral indices between the time-integrated and peak time spectra may be because of the overlap effect of a series of time-resolved spectra within a GRB. Our simulations, which were based on the observed spectral evolution and correlation between the energy flux and the peak energy within individual GRBs support our speculations. The L-p(t) - E-p(t) relation may be less contaminated by the overlap effect, and it would may be an intrinsic feature of radiation physics.
