This study aims to quantitatively assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on societal electricity consumption behavior, particularly considering the interference of special events. Currently, there is insufficient quantitative analysis of the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic affects electricity consumption behavior. Therefore, we endeavor to introduce new theories and methods to comprehensively understand the potential impact of the pandemic on electricity usage in this field. Our proposed machine learning methods demonstrate significant results and advantages in two key aspects. Firstly, we innovatively introduce an abnormality detection algorithm based on the lunar calendar, thereby establishing a detection system capable of accurately identifying abnormal fluctuations in electricity consumption, to precisely determine the onset of the pandemic. Secondly, we design an evaluation system that integrates CNN-LSTM predictive models and controlled variable strategies, enabling us to reconstruct electricity usage patterns less affected by the pandemic. By comparing actual electricity consumption with reconstructed patterns, we deeply evaluate the impact of the pandemic on different regions and industries and introduce the pandemic impact percentage as a quantification method to precisely assess the extent of the impact. The findings indicate a significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on commercial and industrial electricity consumption. Furthermore, our methods are not limited to pandemic research but can also be applied to investigate the effects of other events such as holidays, typhoons, and special production schedules on electricity consumption. In summary, by delving into the complex associations underlying electricity consumption, this study provides a solid theoretical and methodological foundation for future similar research and offers crucial decision support for the electricity industry and emergency management.

Soil physicochemical properties, root characteristics, and fruit economic traits were determined in Camellia oleifera plantations under spontaneous vegetation + mowing (W1), spontaneous vegetation + glyphosate (W2), and no weeding (CK) treatments. Compared with CK, W1 reduced soil bulk density and increased total nitrogen, total phosphorus, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and effective potassium content. W2 treatment resulted in higher bulk density than W1 and lower water-holding capacity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and available potassium of the soil. Generally, both W1 and W2 inhibited weed morphological traits while favoring the C. oleifera root system, with the W1 treatment resulting in the greatest increase. Fruit transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter, yield, and oil yield were higher in W1 than in CK and W2 treatments. Weed root systems and C. oleifera root systems ultimately affect oil production and yield by affecting bulk density, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, fruit transverse diameter, seed yield, and seed kernel oil content. In summary, W1 treatment improved the physicochemical properties, root growth, fruit growth, and soil quality in C. oleifera plantations.

Abstract Biosynthesis drives the cell volume increase during T cell activation. However, the contribution of cell volume regulation in TCR signaling during T lymphoblast formation and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show that cell volume regulation is required for optimal T cell activation. Inhibition of VRACs (volume-regulated anion channels) and deletion of leucine-rich repeat-containing protein 8A (LRRC8A) channel components impair T cell activation and function, particularly under weak TCR stimulation. Additionally, LRRC8A has distinct influences on mRNA transcriptional profiles, indicating the prominent effects of cell volume regulation for T cell functions. Moreover, cell volume regulation via LRRC8A controls T cell-mediated antiviral immunity and shapes the TCR repertoire in the thymus. Mechanistically, LRRC8A governs stringent cell volume increase via regulated volume decrease (RVD) during T cell blast formation to keep the TCR signaling molecules at an adequate density. Together, our results show a further layer of T cell activation regulation that LRRC8A functions as a cell volume controlling “valve” to facilitate T cell activation.

Dwarfing rootstocks enhance planting density, lower tree height, and reduce both labor in peach production. Cerasus humilis is distinguished by its dwarf stature, rapid growth, and robust fruiting capabilities, presenting substantial potential for further development. In this study, Ruipan 4 was used as the scion and grafted onto Amygdalus persica and Cerasus humilis, respectively. The results indicate that compared to grafting combination R/M (Ruipan 4/Amygdalus persica), grafting combination R/O (Ruipan 4/Cerasus humilis) plants show a significant reduction in height and a significant increase in flower buds. RNA-seq indicates that genes related to gibberellin (GA) and auxin metabolism are involved in the dwarfing process of scions mediated by C. humilis. The expression levels of the GA metabolism-related gene PpGA2ox7 significantly increased in R/O and are strongly correlated with plant height, branch length, and internode length. Furthermore, GA levels were significantly reduced in R/O. The transcription factor PpGATA21 was identified through yeast one-hybrid screening of the PpGA2ox7 promoter. Yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) and dual-luciferase reporter (DLR) demonstrate that PpGATA21 can bind to the promoter of PpGA2ox7 and activate its expression. Overall, PpGATA21 activates the expression of the GA-related gene PpGA2ox7, resulting in reduced GA levels and consequent dwarfing of plants mediated by C. humilis. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms of C. humilis and offers a scientific foundation for the dwarfing and high-density cultivation of peach trees.

Anthracnose is extremely detrimental to walnut production, because it seriously affects its yield. Therefore, this study aimed to identify anthracnose resistance genes in walnuts, to lay the foundation for cultivating novel anthracnose-resistant walnut varieties. In this study, the fruits of walnut varieties “Qinyou 1” and “Qinyou 2”, exhibiting relatively weak resistance to anthracnose, were used for transcriptome sequencing and identifying differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Thereafter, we used a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to verify the reliability of the transcriptome data using the walnut varieties Qinyou 1, Qinyou 2, Qinyou 3, Liaohe 1, and Diamond 1. We identified 6326 DEGs post-infection in Qinyou 1, of which 3065 were upregulated and 3261 were downregulated. We also found 2055 DEGs (969 upregulated and 1086 downregulated genes) in the two varieties, after 6 days of anthracnose infection. Based on GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of the transcriptome data, we noted that the DEGs were primarily involved in metabolic processes, cell composition, cell structure, catalytic activity, and binding activity. Furthermore, KEGG functional enrichment analysis showed that the amino acid biosynthesis pathway and plant–pathogen interaction may be activated under anthracnose infection. We also noted that the expression levels of anthracnose resistance genes in different walnut varieties were significantly different. Thus, the findings of this study provide important genetic resources and molecular markers for the cultivation of novel anthracnose-resistant walnut varieties.

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

The commercial exploitation of unconventional petroleum resources (e.g., shale oil/gas and tight oil/gas) has drastically changed the global energy structure within the past two decades. Sweet-spot intervals (areas), the most prolific unconventional hydrocarbon resources, generally consist of extraordinarily high organic matter (EHOM) deposits or closely associated sandstones/carbonate rocks. The formation of sweet-spot intervals (areas) is fundamentally controlled by their depositional and subsequent diagenetic settings, which result from the coupled sedimentation of global or regional geological events, such as tectonic activity, sea level (lake level) fluctuations, climate change, bottom water anoxia, volcanic activity, biotic mass extinction or radiation, and gravity flows during a certain geological period. Black shales with EHOM content and their associated high-quality reservoir rocks deposited by the coupling of major geological events provide not only a prerequisite for massive hydrocarbon generation but also abundant hydrocarbon storage space. The Ordovician–Silurian Wufeng–Longmaxi shale of the Sichuan Basin, Devonian Marcellus shale of the Appalachian Basin, Devonian–Carboniferous Bakken Formation of the Williston Basin, and Triassic Yanchang Formation of the Ordos Basin are four typical unconventional hydrocarbon systems selected as case studies herein. In each case, the formation of sweet-spot intervals for unconventional hydrocarbon resources was controlled by the coupled sedimentation of different global or regional geological events, collectively resulting in a favorable environment for the production, preservation, and accumulation of organic matter, as well as for the generation, migration, accumulation, and exploitation of hydrocarbons. Unconventional petroleum sedimentology, which focuses on coupled sedimentation during dramatic environmental changes driven by major geological events, is key to improve the understanding of the formation and distribution of sweet-spot intervals (areas) in unconventional petroleum systems.

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

The distribution and main controlling factors of the organic matter carbonization points/zones of over-mature marine shale are important issues for shale gas exploration. This paper focuses on the Lower Cambrian and Lower Silurian shales in the Sichuan Basin and its periphery. Based on the detailed anatomy of key carbonization zones, predictions of shale organic matter carbonization zones and regional mapping of thermal maturity are carried out to explore and reveal the distribution and main controlling factors of the carbonization zones of organic matter in the two sets of shales. Four preliminary conclusions were obtained: (1) There are four organic matter carbonization zones in the Lower Silurian shale distribution area, namely eastern Sichuan-western Hubei, northwestern Hubei, west of southern Sichuan, and Renhuai-southwestern Chongqing, covering an area of nearly 40 × 103 km2. The main part of the western carbonization zone in the southern Sichuan is located in the Emei basalt distribution area. (2) The organic matter carbonization zone accounts for more than 80% of the Lower Cambrian shale distribution area, The non-carbonization zone is only distributed in Weiyuan-Ziyang, Moxi-Gaoshiti, Changyang, and Weng'an-Zhenyuan with an area of about 62.6 × 103 km2. (3) The Lower Silurian and Lower Cambrian shales in the west of southern Sichuan experienced an increase in thermal maturity RO values of 0.2%–0.4% and 0.2%–1.0%, respectively, as a result of the Emei large igneous province, an extreme heat event in the Late Permian. The Lower Cambrian and Lower Silurian shales have the highest degree of carbonization of organic matter in Mabian-Ebian, which is also in the high-value area of the Emei basalt thickness. (4) The main controlling factors of organic matter carbonization of the Lower Cambrian and Lower Silurian shales have similarities and differences. The main controlling factor of the former is the long-term deep burial background, and the extreme thermal event in the Late Permian only exacerbated the degree of carbonization in some areas more seriously. The latter's main controlling factors are relatively complex and are controlled by deep burial background in the three regions of Renhuai-southwestern Chongqing, eastern Sichuan-western Hubei, and northwestern Hubei. It was governed by a deep burial background and a high geotemperature in the Late Permian.

The shales in the 2nd Member of Permian Shanxi Formation (Shan2 Member) at the Daning-Jixian block at the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin were deposited in a marine–continental transitional environment. The Shan23 sub-member, which is the target interval for transitional shale gas exploration and development in China, is characterized by substantial shale thickness, few and thin interlayers. This interval, however, has been rarely investigated for reservoir characteristics, especially the controlling factors of high-quality reservoirs. In this paper, the reservoir characteristics and main controlling factors of high-quality reservoirs in Shan23 in the Daning-Jixian block were systematically discussed by organic geochemical analysis, mineral compositional analysis, and microscopic reservoir characterization. The results indicate that the lagoon facies shale interval in the upper part of the Shan23 sub-member has a high total organic carbon (TOC) content, a high brittle mineral content, and high BET surface area and BJH pore volume values, indicating that this is the sweet spot for shale gas exploration and development. Pore space in the Shan23 sub-member shale is dominated by clay mineral intercrystalline pores (76.9%), which also contains organic matter pores (18.7%). The SEM observations reveal that the mineral components are different in pore size distribution (PSD) and the organic matter pores and calcite dissolved pores are mainly in meso-scale, the pores in clay minerals and quartz are in meso- and macro-scale, while the pores in feldspar and pyrite exhibit a wide and uniform size distribution. The single-factor analysis shows that the clay mineral content is the dominant factor controlling pore development in the Shan23 sub-member transitional shales, the TOC content has a certain effect on pore development, and the kerogen type has no discernible effect on pore development.

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Based on anatomy of key areas and data points and analysis of typical features of shell layer in Guanyinqiao Member, basic characteristics of key interfaces, mainly bentonite layers, in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation—Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas and the relationship between these key interfaces with the deposition of organic-rich shale have been examined systematically. The Wufeng Formation—Longmaxi Formation has four types of marker beds with interface attributes, namely, the characteristic graptolite belt, Guanyinqiao Member shell layer, section with dense bentonite layers, and concretion section, which can be taken as key interfaces for stratigraphic division and correlation of the graptolite shale. The shell layer in Guanyinqiao Member is the most standard key interface in Wufeng Formation—Longmaxi Formation, and can also be regarded as an important indicator for judging the depositional scale of organic-rich shale in key areas. There are 8 dense bentonite sections of two types mainly occurring in 7 graptolite belts in these formations. They have similar interface characteristics with the shell layer in Guanyinqiao Member in thickness and natural gamma response, and belong to tectonic interfaces (i.e., event deposits). They have three kinds of distribution scales: whole region, large part of the region, and local part, and can be the third, fourth and fifth order sequence interfaces, and have a differential control effect on organic-rich shale deposits. The horizon the characteristic graptolite belt occurs first is the isochronous interface, which is not directly related to the deposition of organic-rich shale. Concretions only appear in local areas, and show poor stability in vertical and horizontal directions, and have no obvious relationship with the deposition of the organic-rich shale.

Based on the outcrop and drilling data of the Sichuan Basin and its periphery, this paper reveals the concretion development characteristics of the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation and its significance to the environment. Three preliminary conclusions are drawn as follows. (1) The exposure layers and lithofacies characteristics of the concretions in the Qiongzhusi Formation are very different from area to area. In the eastern Sichuan-western Hubei-Hunan & Guizhou and southern Sichuan depression areas, the concretionsare developed in the section of SQ1, and are mainly composed of calcareous siliceous mixed shale facies, siliceous shale facies, dolomitic shale facies and dolomite facies. The clay content is generally less than 25% and is significantly less than the surrounding rocks, and the TOC is generally higher in the lower concretion layers and less in the upper concretion layers. In the central Sichuan and northern Sichuan depression areas, the concretions appear in the sections of SQ1 and SQ2, and are dominated by calcareous shale facies and marl facies. The calcic content is obviously higher than that of surrounding rocks, and the clay content is less than that of surrounding rocks, and the TOC is less than 1.50%. Because mineral composition difference is high, most of the GR curves of the concretions show trough response characteristics, reflecting the central region enriched with calcium or siliceous, and the edge enriched with clay and organic matter. (2) The concretion layers generally occur in carbonaceous shale, silty shale and siliceous shale with a TOC over 0.7%, and are especially developed in carbonaceous shale and siliceous shale of SQ1, and occasionally appear in grey silty shale with a TOC over 0.2%, showing that the concretion layers are basically symbiotic with grey shale (especially with high-quality shale). (3) The concretions are a kind of important sedimentary response of rifting activities in Yangtze marine basin. According to the distribution characteristics of concretions and black shale in the Qiongzhusi Formation, the rifting activities of Yangtze marine basin can be divided into three periods including development period (SQ1), adjustment period (SQ2) and abortion period (SQ3). In the period of SQ1, controlled by massive rifting and upwelling ocean currents in Yangtze marine basin, the concretions and organic-rich shale were widely developed in the Lower Qiongzhusi Formation. In the periods of SQ2 and SQ3, while rifting activity of Yangtze marine basin decreased and aborted, and while sea level fell and upwelling ocean currents receded to the southeast, the concretions and organic-rich shale just appeared in the local depression areas in small scale.

The incidence of melanoma has increased rapidly over the past few decades, with mortality accounting for more than 75% of all skin cancers. The high metastatic potential of Melanoma is an essential factor in its high mortality. Vascular angiogenic system has been proved to be crucial for the metastasis of melanoma. An in-depth understanding of angiogenesis will be of great benefit to melanoma treatment and may promote the development of melanoma therapies. This review summarizes the recent advances and challenges of anti-angiogenic agents, including monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, human recombinant Endostatin, and traditional Chinese herbal medicine. We hope to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms, clinical research progress, and future research directions of melanoma.

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

The marine–continental transitional Permian Shanxi Formation, which is located on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin, is expected to be another set of economic gas shale for exploration and development in China. In this study, geochemical methods, low-pressure gas adsorption, high-pressure mercury intrusion, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) imaging were performed to investigate the pore structure characteristics of the second member of the Permian Shanxi gas shale. The results show that the average TOC content of the shale is 5.90%, the average thermal maturity is 2.22% Ro, and these organic-rich shales are enriched in clay minerals. Mesopores are the predominant pore type in these shales, and have slit-like shapes. FE-SEM analysis reveals that the interparticle pores associated with clay minerals are more developed than organic-hosted pores, while a few SEM-invisible micropores may be related to the aromatic structures of kerogen in the shale. Pore development in the studied samples is influenced by the TOC and clay mineral contents. The development of organic-hosted pores in the shale shows obvious differences when compared to representative marine gas shales worldwide, which are ascribed to the differences in kerogen types. Nevertheless, the development of micropores and mesopores in the samples is comparable to that of marine shales, which indicates the presence of qualified space for gas storage in the studied shale. This study will provide crucial theoretical guidance for determining of sweet spots and for the further exploration and development of the transitional shale gas.

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract The electron multipliers gain is closely related to the secondary electron emission coefficient (SEE) of the emission layer materials. The SEE is closely related to the thickness of the emission layer. If the emission layer is thin, the low SEE causes the low gain of electron multipliers. If the emission layer is thick, the conductive layer can't timely supplement charge to the emission layer, the electronic amplifier gain is low too. The electron multipliers usually choose Al2O3 and MgO film as the emission layer because of the high SEE level. MgO easy deliquescence into Mg(OH)2 Mg2(OH)2CO3 and MgCO3 resulting in the lower SEE level. The SEE level of Al2O3 is lower than MgO, but Al2O3 is stable. We designed a spherical system for testing the SEE level of materials, and proposed to use low-energy secondary electrons instead of low-energy electron beam for neutralization to measuring the SEE level of Al2O3, MgO, MgO/Al2O3, Al2O3/MgO, and precisely control the film thickness by using atomic layer deposition. We propose to compare the SEE under the adjacent incident electrons energy to partition the SEE value of the material, and obtain four empirical formulas for the relationship between SEE and thickness. Since the main materials that cause the decrease in SEE are Mg2(OH)2CO3 and MgCO3, we use the C element atomic concentration measured by XPS to study the deliquescent depth of the material. We propose to use the concept of transition layer for SEE interpretation of multilayer materials. Through experiments and calculations, we put forward a new emission layer for electron multipliers, including 2–3 nm Al2O3 buffer layer, 5–9 nm MgO main-body layer, 1 nm Al2O3 protective layer or 0.3 nm Al2O3 enhancement layer. We prepared this emission layer to microchannel plate (MCP), which significantly improved the gain of MCP. We can also apply this new emission layer to channel electron multiplier and separate electron multiplier.

In order to provide technical support for the shale gas exploration and development in the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation of the Sichuan Basin, this paper takes the Longmaxi Formation in the Changning and Fuling Shale Gas Fields as the research object to quantitatively characterize the development characteristics of natural fractures in the Longmaxi Formation shale by means of helium pycnometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), true density testing and other methods, with the aid of the modified petrophysical model. Then, the development types and genetic mechanisms of natural fractures and their influences on shale gas development are discussed. The following research results are obtained. First, the modified petrophysical model can accurately describe the pore system in the Changning shale with a fitting rate of 0.74. Second, the development of natural fractures in shale is different in various regions. The natural fractures in the Changning Shale Gas Field, controlled by basement thrust faults, decollement layers and internal folds, are locally developed and filled with calcareous, and the average fracture porosity is 0.15%. In the Fuling Shale Gas Field, however, natural fractures, mainly controlled by reverse faults and slippage effect, are commonly more developed and unfilled or semi-filled with siliceous, and the average fracture porosity is 1.30%. Third, under the formation conditions, the opening of natural fractures is different. The natural fractures in the Changning Shale Gas Field are basically closed with weaker flowing ability, while those in the Fuling Shale Gas Field are relatively open with stronger flowing ability. Fourth, the occurrence mode of shale gas is influenced by natural fractures, and it is internally dominated by free gas. The initial gas production of shale gas wells is higher. In conclusion, (1) the regression coefficient is introduced to calculate the actual total organic matter content, which promotes the modified petrophysical model to describe matrix pores and fracture pores more accurately; (2) the development of natural fractures in the shale producing pay of the Sichuan Basin is relatively beneficial to shale gas enrichment and exploitation, but the flowing ability of the natural fractures will be weakened under the original formation conditions.

Abstract When the resistivity of the AZO conductive layer is within the MCP resistance requirement, the interval of the Zn content is very narrow (70–73%) and difficult to control. Aiming at the characteristics of the AZO conductive layer on the microchannel plate, an algorithm is designed to adjust the ratio of the conductive material ZnO and the high resistance material Al2O3. We put forward the concept of the working resistance of the MCP (i.e., the resistance during the electron avalanche in the microchannel). The working resistance of AZO-ALD-MCP (Al2O3/ZnO atomic layer deposition microchannel plate) was measured for the first time by the MCP resistance test system. In comparison with the conventional MCP, we found that the resistance of AZO-ALD-MCP in working state and non-working state is very different, and as the voltage increases, the working resistance significantly decreases. Therefore, we proposed a set of analytical methods for the conductive layer. We also proposed to adjust the ratio of the conductive material of the ALD-MCP conductive layer to the high-resistance material under the working resistance condition, and successfully prepared high-gain AZO-ALD-MCP. This design opens the way for finding better materials for the conductive layer of ALD-MCP to improve the performance of MCP.

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Marine–continental transitional (hereinafter referred to as transitional) Permian shales are important targets for shale gas in China because of the considerable volumes of shale gas resources present in them. In this study, transitional shale samples from the Permian Shanxi Formation in the Daning–Jixian block along the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin were collected to investigate the effects of organic and inorganic compositions on the development of their pore structures through organic petrographic analysis, X–ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, gas (N2 and CO2) adsorption, high-pressure mercury injection (HPMI), and methane adsorption experiments. The organic petrographic analysis reveals that the Permian Shanxi shale comprises Type-II2-III kerogens, and the average vitrinite reflectance (Ro) is 2.3% at the overmature stage or in the dry gas window. The shale interval at the bottom of the lagoon facies is considered the most favorable interval throughout the entire section because of its high total organic carbon (TOC) content (4.19–43.9%; an average of 16.9%) and high brittle mineral content (38.3–73.2%; an average of 55.8%). Improving the economic benefits of Camellia oleifera is a major problem for C. oleifera growers, and girdling and foliar fertilizer have significant effects on improving the economic benefits of plants. This study explains the effects of girdling, girdling + foliar fertilizer on nutrient distribution, and the economic benefits of C. oleifera at different times. It also explains the N, P, and K contents of roots, leaves, fruits, and flower buds (sampled in March, May, August, and October 2021) and their economic benefits. The results showed girdling promoted the accumulation of N and K in leaves in March 2021 (before spring shoot emergence) but inhibited the accumulation of P, which led to the accumulation of P in roots and that of N in fruits in August 2021 (fruit expansion period). Foliar fertilizer application after girdling replenished the P content of leaves in March 2021, and P continued to accumulate in large quantities at the subsequent sampling time points. The N and P contents of the root system decreased in March. In October (fruit ripening stage), girdled shrubs showed higher contents of N and K in fruits and flower buds, and consequently lower relative contents of N and K in roots and leaves but higher content of P in leaves. Foliar fertilizer application slowed down the effects of girdling on nutrient accumulation in fruits and flower buds. Spraying foliar fertilizer decreased the N:P ratio in the flower buds and fruits of girdled plants. Thus, foliar fertilizer spray weakened the effects of girdling on the nutrient content and economic benefits of C. oleifera. In conclusion, girdling changed the nutrient accumulation pattern in various organs of C. oleifera at different stages, increased leaf N:K ratio before shoot emergence, reduced root K content at the fruit expansion stage and the N:K ratio of mature fruit, and promoted economic benefits.

Based on the Qiliao section of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation – Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in Shizhu, Chongqing city, the development characteristics of bentonite in eastern Sichuan Basin was examined systematically, and its geological significance and scientific value were analyzed. The main understandings are as follows: (1) Six bentonite dense layers were found in the Qiliao section, mainly occurring in 6 graptolitic belts of the Katian, Rhuddanian and Aeronian. Most of the bentonite dense layers showed obvious increase in clay, peak response of GR curve, and indistinct relationship between volcanic ash and total organic carbon (TOC). (2) The bentonite dense layers of Longmaxi Formation were widely distributed in eastern Sichuan Basin and its periphery, and generally showed GR peak, which can be an important reference interface for dividing the bottom boundary of the Coronograptus cyphus belt and the top boundary of the Rhuddanian in eastern Sichuan Basin and western Hubei province. (3) Taking the bentonite dense layers as the stratification basis of the Rhuddanian and Aeronian, it was determined that the sediment thickness of the Rhuddanian in the eastern Sichuan depression was generally 10–40 m, but only the upper part of the Coronograptus cyphus belt was deposited in the hinderland of Yichang Uplift, and the sedimentary thickness was only 3–7 m. (4) In the hinderland of the Yichang Uplift, at least five and a half graptolitic belts were missing in Wufeng Formation – Rhuddanian, and the deposition time of Rhuddanian was less than 0.4 Ma. (5) The bentonite dense layers were important sedimentary responses to the strong deflection of the Yangtze basin at the turn of the Ordovician–Silurian, which suggested that four tectonic activity periods existed in the eastern Sichuan depression, including the early stage of the depression, the middle-late stage of the depression, the early stage of the foreland flexure and the development stage of the foreland flexure. The high-quality shale was mainly developed from the early stage to the middle-late stage in the depression. Founded on the data deriving out of the outcrops and key exploratory wells, the distribution characteristics of the thickest bentonite layer of the Aeronian in the Middle-Upper Yangtze Region as well as its unique role in the geological evaluation of shale gas and prediction of shale gas “sweet layer” has been researched altogether. There are three preliminary conclusions that have been reached: (1) Firstly, the thickest bentonite layer of the Aeronian is widely and stably distributed in the Middle-Upper Yangtze Region with a thickness of 5–40 cm. It is easily identifiable in most of the exploration areas for its logging features that appear to be distinctive. It has general GR values of 188–235 cps (or API) and appears as a peak on the gamma log in the southern and eastern Sichuan Basin. Nonetheless, there is no evident GR value peak or even takes on trough feature in central and northeastern Sichuan Basin and northern Middle Yangtze Region. (2) Secondly, one may consider the bentonite layer as the key marker bed for segmental partition and regional correlation of the Longmaxi Formation. In the field, initially looking for the appearance of demirastrites or the first gamma curve trough below the bentonite layer is an effective way to identify the upper boundary of Rhuddanian. (3) Lastly, the emergence of the thickest bentonite layer in the Aeronian has a profound influence on the formation and distribution of high-quality shale of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation. Its appearance is an important symbol in regards to foreland basin folding and the ever-increasing sedimentary rate. Meanwhile, it also represents a transition from organic-rich and silica-rich shale to clay-rich and calcium-rich shale all within the Longmaxi Formation. Therefore, the organic-rich and silica-rich shales were mainly formed prior the appearance of the bentonite layer. The above is a control effect that must be taken into account when predicting the spatial distribution of the “sweet spot” layer in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formations. In most parts of the Middle-Upper Yangtze Region, the thickest bentonite layer in the Aeronian can be regarded as the upper boundary of the high-quality reservoir. Abstract: Based on the drilling data of the Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin and periphery, SW China, the Ro lower limits and essential features of the carbonization of organic matter in over-high maturity marine shale were examined using laser Raman, electrical and physical property characterization techniques. Three preliminary conclusions are drawn: (1) The lower limit of Ro for the carbonization of Type I-II1 organic matter in marine shale is 3.5%; when the Ro is less than 3.4%, carbonization of organic matter won't happen in general; when the Ro ranges from 3.4% to 3.5%, non-carbonization and weak carbonization of organic matter may coexist; when the Ro is higher than 3.5%, the carbonization of organic matter is highly likely to take place. (2) Organic-rich shale entering carbonization phase have three basic characteristics: log resistivity curve showing a general “slender neck” with low-ultralow resistance response, Raman spectra showing a higher graphite peak, and poor physical property (with matrix porosity of only less than 1/2 of the normal level). (3) The quality damage of shale reservoir caused by the carbonization of organic matter is almost fatal, which primarily manifests in depletion of hydrocarbon generation capacity, reduction or disappearance of organic pores and intercrystalline pores of clay minerals, and drop of adsorption capacity to natural gas. Therefore, the lower limit of Ro for the carbonization of Type I-II1 organic matter should be regarded as the theoretically impassable red line of shale gas exploration in the ancient marine shale formations. The organic-rich shale with low-ultralow resistance should be evaluated effectively in area selection to exclude the high risk areas caused by the carbonization of organic matter. The target organic-rich shale layers with low-ultralow resistance drilled during exploration and development should be evaluated on carbonization level of organic matter, and the deployment plan should be adjusted according to the evaluation results in time. In the Carboniferous–Permian period, several organic-rich black shales were deposited in a marine–continental transitional environment in the Linfen area on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin. Integrated sedimentological and organic geochemical analyses are performed on an outcrop in order to clarify the relationship between paleoenvironment and organic matter accumulation. The results of this study show that the marine–continental transitional strata of the Upper Carboniferous Benxi Formation to Lower Permian Taiyuan and Shanxi Formation exposed in the Linfen area are composed of sandstone, shale, coal, and limestone. Total organic carbon (TOC) contents of the studied samples were mainly distributed in the range of 0.59%–35.4%, with an average of 7.32%. From Benxi Formation to Shanxi formation, the humidity gradually increased, and the climate gradually changed from hot and humid to warm and humid during Carboniferous to Permian. The deposition of the Shanxi Formation ended with the climate returning to hot and humid, having an oxic-suboxic conditions and a high paleoproductivity. Paleoredox conditions and paleoproductivity are the two vital factors controlling the formation of organic matter in black shales. The transitional environment characterized by oxic-suboxic, relatively high deposition rate, and various source of organic matter, although different from the marine environment, provides a good material basis for the deposition of organic-rich shales.

In this paper, the shale of Upper Ordovician Wufeng FmâLower Silurian Longmaxi Fm was taken as an example to reveal the distribution patterns and the main sedimentation controlling factors of high-quality shale in the Upper Yangtze region. This study was made from the aspects of plate movement, fluctuation of sea level, palaeo-productivity, deposition rate and paleogeographic environment, based on the field outcrop sections and drilling data of the southern Sichuan Basin, together with geochemical element testing and biostratigraphical analysis results. The following findings were obtained. First, the collision and joint of Yangtze Plate and its periphery plates and the intra-plate deformation were gentle in the early stage, strong in the late stage, gentle in northwest and strong in southeast, so the sedimentation center in the Upper Yangtze region migrated to the northwest and the closure of sea area in the southern Sichuan Basin changed from weak in early stages to strong in late stages. Second, at the turning period from Ordovician to Silurian, sea levels presented the cycle change of deepâshallowâdeepâshallow. Due to the combination of high sea levels and a stable ocean basin in early stages, an extensive anoxic tectonic sedimentary space favorable for organic matters preservation was formed in the sea floor. Third, due to the effect of tectonic movements and sea closure, palaeo-productivity of sea areas in the southern Sichuan Basin presented a trend of being high in the early stage and low in the late stage, and the deposition rate was also low in the early stage and high in the late stage. And fourth, extensive deposition and distribution of shale rich in organic matters and silica was mainly controlled by a stable sea basin with a low subsidence rate, a relatively high sea level, semi-closed waters and low deposition rates. To sum up, the high-quality shale in the Upper Yangtze region is characterized by multiphase superimposition, lateral extension and northwestward renewal of sedimentary ages, and it is mainly deposited in WufengâRhuddanian age and secondarily in Aeronian age. The main exploration layers are WufengâRhuddanian in southernâeastern Sichuan Depression, RhuddanianâAeronian in Weiyuan area, and WufengâTelychian in centralânorthern Sichuan Basin. The reservoir characteristics of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng-Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formations in southern Sichuan Basin were preliminarily revealed in this study by identifying and quantitatively evaluating the fracture pores of five appraisal wells in the central and northern parts of the southern Sichuan Depression by several methods. Four conclusions were reached as follows: (1) In the central zone of the Depression, the deep reservoir space of the Wufeng-Longmaxi producing pay is composed mainly of matrix pores and the microcracks are not common, whether on the local structural highs, flanks or lows. The physical properties are similar to that of the matrix pores in Changning, Weiyuan and Fuling gas fields. (2) In the northern zone of the Depression, the deep reservoir space of the Wufeng-Longmaxi black shale is composed mainly of matrix pores, and fracture pores mainly occur in local discrete intervals, with a total porosity range from 3.5% to 6.7%, on average 5.3%, and fracture porosity of 0-2.1%, on average 0.3%. (3) In the central and northern parts of the southern Sichuan Depression, the Wufeng-Longmaxi producing pays have undeveloped fracture pores and chiefly extensively distributed matrix pores, indirectly indicating relatively stable tectonic activities and corresponding weaker reservoir reworking there than Fuling field located in eastern Sichuan Basin. (4) The size and distribution of the gypsum-salt layer in the Cambrian are the key controlling factors of fracture pore development in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formations. Therefore, the areas including Wellblocks L7, GS1, eastern Sichuan Basin and western Hubei province, where gypsum-salt layer in the Cambrian is thick and stable, and fracture intervals are likely to occur in the Wufeng-Longmaxi producing pay controlled by decollement structure above salt structure since the Yanshan Movement, are the potential favorable areas for fracture pore development. From the aspects of shale gas resource condition, main exploration and development progress, important breakthrough in key technologies and equipment, this paper systematically summarized and analyzed current situation of shale gas development in China and pointed out five big challenges such as misunderstandings, lower implementation degree and higher economic uncertainty of shale gas resource, and still no breakthrough in exploration and development core technologies and equipment for shale gas buried depth more than 3500 m, higher cost and other non-technical factors that restrict the development pace. Aiming at the above challenges, we put forward five suggestions to promote the shale gas development in China: (1) Make strategies and set goals according to our national conditions and exploration and development stages. That is, make sure to realize shale gas annual production of 20 × 109 m3, and strives to reach 30 × 109 m3. (2) Attach importance to the research of accumulation and enrichment geological theory and exploration & development key engineering technologies for lower production and lower pressure marine shale gas reservoir, and at the same time orderly promote the construction of non-marine shale gas exploration & development demonstration areas. (3) The government should introduce further policies and set special innovation funds to support the companies to carry out research and development of related technologies and equipment, especially to strengthen the research and development of technology, equipment and process for shale gas bellow 3500 m in order to achieve breakthrough in deep shale gas. (4) Continue to promote the geological theory, innovation in technology and management, and strengthen cost control on drilling, fracturing and the whole process in order to realize efficient, economic and scale development of China's shale gas. (5) Reform the mining rights management system, establish information platform of shale gas exploration and development data, and correctly guide the non-oil and gas companies to participate in shale gas exploration and development.

Over-high maturity is one of the most vital characteristics of marine organic-rich shale reservoirs from the Lower Paleozoic in the south part of China. The organic matter (OM) in shale gas reservoirs almost went through the entire thermal evolution. During this wide span, a great amount of hydrocarbon was available and numerous pores were observed within the OM including kerogen and solid bitumen/pyrobitumen. These nanopores in solid bitumen/pyrobitumen can be identified using SEM. The imaging can be dissected and understood better based on the sequence of diagenesis and hydrocarbon charge with the shape of OM and pores. In terms of the maturity process showed by the various typical cases, the main effects of the relationship between the reservoir porosity and organic carbon abundance are interpreted as follows: the change and mechanism of reservoirs properties due to thermal evolution are explored, such as gas carbon isotope from partial to complete rollover zone, wettability alteration from water-wet to oil-wet and then water-wet pore surface again, electrical resistivity reversal from the increasing to decreasing stage, and nonlinearity fluctuation of rock elasticity anisotropy. These indicate a possible evolution pathway for shale gas reservoirs from the Lower Paleozoic in the southern China, as well as the general transformation processes between different shale reservoirs in thermal stages.

This paper mainly discusses the industrialization progress, “sweet spot” evaluation criterion, E&P technologies, success experiences, challenges and prospects of China's shale gas. Based on the geologic and engineering parameters of the Fuling, Changning and Weiyuan shale gas fields in the Sichuan Basin, this paper points out that China's shale gas has its particularity. The discoveries of super-giant marine shale gas fields with high evolution degree (Ro=2.0%−3.5%) and ultrahigh pressure (pressure coefficient=1.3−2.1) in southern China is of important scientific significance and practical value to ancient marine shale gas exploration and development to China and even the world. It's proposed that shale gas “sweet spots” must be characterized by high gas content, excellent frackability and good economy etc. The key indicators to determine the shale gas enrichment interval and trajectory of horizontal wells include “four highs”, that is high TOC (>3.0%), high porosity (>3.0%), high gas content (>3.0 m3/t) and high formation pressure (pressure coefficient>1.3), and “two well-developed” (well-developed beddings and well-developed micro-fractures). It's suggested that horizontal well laneway be designed in the middle of high pressure compartment between the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation and Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation. The mode of forming “artificial shale gas reservoir” by “fracturing micro-reservoir group” is proposed and the mechanisms of “closing-in after fracturing, limiting production through pressure control” are revealed. Several key technologies (such as three-dimensional seismic survey and micro-seismic monitoring of fracturing, horizontal wells, “factory-like” or industrialized production mode, etc.) were formed. Some successful experiences (such as “sweet spot” selection, horizontal well laneway control, horizontal length optimization and “factory-like” production mode, etc.) were obtained. The four main challenges to realize large-scale production of shale gas in China include uncertainty of shale gas resources, breakthroughs in key technologies and equipment of shale gas exploration and development below 3 500 m, lower cost of production, as well as water resources and environment protection. It is predicted that the recoverable resources of the Lower Paleozoic marine shale gas in southern China are approximately 8.8×1012 m3, among which the recoverable resources in the Sichuan Basin are 4.5×1012 m3 in the favorable area of 4.0×104 km2. The productivity of (200−300)×108 m3/a is predicted to be realized by 2020 when the integrated revolution of “theory, technology, production and cost” is realized in Chinese shale gas exploration and development. It is expected in the future to be built “Southwest Daqing Oilfield (Gas Daqing)” in Sichuan Basin with conventional and unconventional natural gas production. Abstract: The stratigraphic distribution and lithofacies features of the Guanyinqiao Member of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation around the Sichuan Basin were studied based on the data of drilling, outcrops, rock minerals, geochemistry and logging. The stratigraphic distribution of the Guanyinqiao Member is generally dominated by sea-level variation. This formation is in conformable contact with the overlying and underlying formations inside and locally outside the basin and is locally lost outside the basin. The Guanyinqiao Member is usually composed of deep-water siliceous shale and calcareous and siliceous shale facies, similar to those overlying and underlying lithologies inside the basin; and composed of shallow marl facies or lost, greatly different from the surrounding lithologies in the conformable area outside the basin. The study confirmed that the lithofacies of the Guanyinqiao Member is of great significance to the identification of the reservoir properties of the Wufeng and Longmaxi formations shale gas and to the selection of shale gas. The exploration and development of shale gas is promising in the depressions in the south, east and northeast of the Sichuan Basin, where good reservoirs are developed. The zone where the Guanyinqiao Member is lost has no “sweet spot” formation and is risky in exploring shale gas. The reservoir quality and exploration prospect of the Guanyinqiao Member marl zones are between the two zones mentioned above. In the past five years, shale gas exploration and development has grown in a leaping-forward way in China. Following USA and Canada, China is now the third country where industrial shale gas production is realized, with the cumulative production exceeding 60 × 108 m3 until the end of 2015. In this paper, the main achievements of shale gas exploration and development in China in recent years were reviewed and the future development prospect was analyzed. It is pointed out that shale gas exploration and development in China is, on the whole, still at its early stage. Especially, marine shale gas in the Sichuan Basin has dominated the recent exploration and development. For the realization of shale gas scale development in China, one key point lies in the breakthrough and industrial production of transitional facies and continental facies shale gas. Low–moderate yield of shale gas wells is the normal in China, so it is crucial to develop key exploration and development technologies. Especially, strictly controlling single well investment and significantly reducing cost are the important means to increase shale gas exploration and development benefits. And finally, suggestions were proposed in five aspects. First, continuously strengthen theoretical and technical researches, actively carry out appraisal on shale gas “sweet spots”, and gradually accumulate development basis. Second, stress on primary evaluation of exploration and development, highlight the effective implementation of shale gas resources, and control the rhythm of appraisal drilling and productivity construction. Third, highlight fine description and evaluation of shale gas reservoirs and increase the overall development level. Fourth, intensify the research on exploration and development technologies in order to stand out simple and practical technologies with low costs. And fifth, summarize the experiences in fast growth of shale gas exploration and development, highlight the demonstration and evaluation of key indicators, and try to achieve more breakthroughs and replacement in new areas, new domains and new strata.

Fractures and pores are important storage and percolation spaces in tight reservoirs, and the identification, characterization and quantitative evaluation on them are the key aspects and difficulties in shale gas reservoir evaluation. In view of this, quantitative evaluation was performed on the fracture porosity of organic-rich shale intervals of Longmaxi Fm, Lower Silurian, Sichuan Basin (Wufeng Fm, Upper Ordovician included), after a dual-porosity medium porosity interpretation model was built on the basis of drilling data of Fuling Gasfield and Changning gas block in the Sichuan Basin. And then, the following conclusions are reached. First, shale fracture porosity interpretation by using dual-porosity medium model is the effective method to evaluate quantitatively the fracture porosity of shale reservoirs, and the development of quantitative characterization techniques of marine shale reservoir spaces. Second, the matrix pore volume of the principal pay zones in this area and its constitution regions are stably distributed with matrix porosity generally in the range of 4.6%–5.4%. And third, the development characteristics of fracture porosity vary largely in different tectonic regions and indifferent wellblocks and intervals even in the same tectonic region, presenting strong heterogeneity in terms of shale reservoir storage and percolation properties. It is indicated by quantitative characterization of fractures and pores that there are two types of shale gas reservoirs in Wufeng Fm – Longmaxi Fm, Sichuan Basin, including matrix porosity + fracture type and matrix porosity type. The former are mainly developed in the areas with special structure settings and they are characterized by developed fracture pores, high gas content, high free gas content, thick pay zones and high single-well production rate. And in the Sichuan Basin, its distribution is possibly in a restricted range. The latter are characterized by high matrix porosity, undeveloped fracture porosity and medium–high single-well production rate. And it is predicted that marine shale gas is predominant in this basin.

The main factors controlling the enrichment and high yield of shale gas were analyzed based on the recent research progress of depositional model and reservoir characterization of organic-rich shale in China. The study determines the space-time comparison basis of graptolite sequence in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation–Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation and proposes the important depositional pattern of marine organic-rich shale: stable ocean basin with low subsidence rate, high sea level, semi-enclosed water body, and low sedimentation rate. Deposited in the stage of Late Ordovician-Early Silurian, the superior shale with thickness of 20−80 m and total organic carbon (TOC) content of 2.0%−8.4% was developed in large deep-water shelf environment which is favorable for black shale development. Based on the comparison among the Jiaoshiba, Changning and Weiyuan shale gas fields, it is believed that reservoirs of scale are mainly controlled by shale rich in biogenic silica and calcium, moderate thermal maturity, high matrix porosity, and abundant fracture. The shales in the Wufeng and Longmaxi formations are characterized by porosity of 3.0%−8.4%, permeability of 0.000 2×10−3−0.500 0×10−3 μm2, stable areal distribution of matrix pore volume and their constituents, great variation in fracture and pore characteristics among different tectonic regions as well as different well fields and different intervals in the same tectonic. The Cambrian Qiongzhusi shale features poor physical properties with the porosity of 1.5%−2.9% and the permeability of 0.001×10−3−0.010×10−3 μm2, resulted from the carbonization of organic matter, high crystallinity of clay minerals and later filling in bioclastic intragranular pores. Four factors controlling the accumulation and high production of shale gas were confirmed: depositional environment, thermal evolution, pore and fracture development, and tectonic preservation condition; two special features were found: high thermal maturity (Ro of 2.0%−3.5%) and overpressure of reservoir (pressure coefficient of 1.3−2.1); and two enrichment modes were summarized: “structural sweet spots” and “continuous sweet area”. A high-precision sedimentary environment study of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation is an important subject for shale gas exploration and development in Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas. On the basis of outcrops and drilling data, its isochronous stratigraphic framework was built according to a particular graptolite zone and an important marker bed, and lithofacies, paleontology, calcareous content, well logging, geochemistry and other geologic information were combined to describe the sedimentary microfacies of Longmaxi Formation and its stratigraphic sequence, sedimentary evolution process and high quality shale distribution features as follows: ① with regional diachronism of the top and the bottom, the Longmaxi Formation is divided into two third-order sequences (SQ1 and SQ2), of which SQ1 is mainly an abyssal sedimentary assemblage deposited in the marine transgression period, and SQ2 is a bathyal to shallow sea sedimentary assemblage deposited in the marine regression period; ② there are eight microfacies such as deep calcareous shelf and deep argillaceous shelf in this formation and the organic-rich shale was mainly deposited in the deep water area of SQ1; and ③ from SQ1 to SQ2, the depocenter moved from the depression area in southern-eastern to northern Sichuan Basin, but the central Sichuan uplift remained an underwater one. It is concluded from this study that: ① shale gas production layers were mainly deposited in SQ1, the southern-eastern depression area was the depocenter in SQ1 and a shale gas enrichment area; and ② black shale in northern Sichuan was deposited in late SQ2, with limited distribution and relatively insufficient exploration potential, but the potential of shale gas exploration in western Hubei area is between southern-eastern and northern Sichuan Basin.

The Sichuan Basin, a hotspot and one of the most successful areas for shale gas exploration and development, can largely reflect and have a big say in the future prospect of shale gas in China. Through an overall review on the progress in shale gas exploration and development in the Sichuan Basin, we obtained the following findings: (1) the Sichuan Basin has experienced the marine and terrestrial depositional evolution, resulting in the deposition of three types of organic-matter-rich shales (i.e. marine, transitional, and terrestrial), and the occurrence of six sets of favorable shale gas enrichment strata (i.e. the Sinian Doushantuo Fm, the Cambrian Qiongzhusi Fm, the Ordovician Wufeng–Silurian Longmaxi Fm, the Permian Longtan Fm, the Triassic Xujiahe Fm, and the Jurassic Zhiliujing Fm); (2) the five key elements for shale gas accumulation in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Fm are deep-water shelf facies, greater thickness of organic-rich shales, moderate thermal evolution, abundant structural fractures, reservoir overpressure; and (3) the exploration and development of shale gas in this basin still confronts two major challenges, namely, uncertain sweet spots and potential prospect of shale gas, and the immature technologies in the development of shale gas resources at a depth of more than 3500 m. In conclusion, shale gas has been discovered in the Jurassic, Triassic and Cambrian, and preliminary industrial-scale gas has been produced in the Ordovician-Silurian Fm in the Sichuan Basin, indicating a promising prospect there; commercial shale gas can be produced there with an estimated annual gas output of 30–60 billion m3; and shale gas exploration and production experiences in this basin will provide valuable theoretical and technical support for commercial shale gas development in China.

Searching for some reliable evidences that can verify the carbonification of organic matters in marine shales is a major scientific issue in selecting shale gas fairways in old strata. To this end, based on core, logging and testing data, the electric property of two organic-rich shale layers in the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Fm. and the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Fm. in the southern Sichuan Basin was compared to examine the carbonification signs of organic matters in the Qiongzhusi shale and its influence on gas occurrence in the shales. The following conclusions were reached: (1) the electric property experiment shows that the Qiongzhusi shale in the study area has had carbonification of organic matters. The low resistivity of dry samples from this highly mature organic-rich shale and ultra-low resistivity on downhole logs can be used to directly judge the degree of organic matter carbonification and the quality of source rocks; (2) in the Changning area, the Qiongzhusi shale shows low resistivity of dry samples and low to ultra-low resistivity on logs, indicating that organic matters are seriously carbonized, while in the Weiyuan area, the Qiongzhusi shale shows a basically normal resistivity on log curves, indicating its degree of graphitization between the Longmaxi Fm. and Qiongzhusi Fm. in the Changning area; (3) shale with medium-to-high resistivity is remarkably better than that with ultra-low resistivity in terms of gas generation potential, matrix porosity and gas adsorption capacity; (4) industrial gas flow has been tested in the organic shales with medium-to-high resistivity in the Jianwei–Weiyuan–Tongnan area in the north, where the Qiongzhusi shale is a favorable shale gas exploration target.

Rock brittleness is now one of the significant parameters for geological evaluation of shale gas reservoirs due to the wide application of hydraulic fracturing in shale gas development. Currently, the evaluation of shale brittleness is generally based on mineral composition or elastic parameters, which both derive from the exploration experiences in North America. Due to the easier access of mineral composition data through x-ray diffraction method than rock mechanical data through array sonic logging method, the mineral-based brittleness indices have stronger practicability. However, there is not a unified definition of brittle minerals yet, which now usually refers to quartz or quartz and carbonate minerals. Considering the specific conditions of Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in Southern Sichuan Basin; depositional environment of calcareous shelf; and higher content of calcite, dolomite, and pyrite, we redefined brittle minerals according to the elastic parameters of each mineral, taking quartz, dolomite, and pyrite which best satisfy the standard of “Young’s modulus>30 GPa and Poisson’s ratio

Research on major controlling factors of the high-quality shale in Upper Ordovician Wufeng–Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation is a major subject. Based on the information of outcrops and drilling data acquired from Southern Sichuan combined with geochemical elemental analysis and biostratigraphy, this paper analyzed the sedimentary characteristics of Wufeng–Longmaxi organic-rich shale in Sichuan Basin, including plate movements, fluctuation of sea level, paleoproductivity, deposition rates, and paleogeographic environment, and revealed the distribution and sedimentary controlling factors of high-quality shale. Four preliminary conclusions were drawn: (1) The collision and joint of Yangtze Plate and its periphery plates, as well as the intraplate deformation, were gentle in early stage, strong in late stage, gentle in northwest, while strong in southeast, thus forming the northwestward migration of sedimentation center in Sichuan Basin, and the evolution of southern Sichuan sea closeness from weak to strong. (2) Sea level changed following the cycle of deep→shallow→deep→shallow at the turn of Ordovician–Silurian. High sea level and stable ocean basin in early stage created extensive anoxic tectonic sedimentary space which was in favor of organic matter preservation. (3) Influenced by tectonic movements and sea closeness, paleoproductivity of Southern Sichuan marine presented the trend of high in early stage and low in late stage, while the deposition rate also changed from slow in the early stage to fast in the late stage. (4) Extensive deposition and distribution of organic-rich silicic shale was mainly controlled by stable sea basin of low deposition rate, relatively high sea level, semienclosed water, and low deposition rate. The research showed that the high-quality shale in Sichuan Basin is characterized by multiphase superimposition, horizontal extension, and northwest renewal of sedimentary age; Wufeng–Rhuddanian is the main depositional period of high-quality shale, Aeronian comes next; the main exploration layers are Wufeng–Rhuddanian in southern–eastern Sichuan depression, Rhuddanian–Aeronian in Weiyuan, and Wufeng–Telychian in central-northern Sichuan.

Based on the latest global conventional-unconventional petroleum development situation and the conclusion of petroleum geology theory and technology innovation in recent 10 years, the connotation of conventional and unconventional petroleum “orderly accumulation” connotation is formulated. This concept indicates that, unconventional petroleum occurs in the hydrocarbon supply direction of conventional petroleum, and conventional petroleum may appear in the outer space of unconventional petroleum. Proper evaluation methods and engineering technology are important to push the conventional-unconventional petroleum co-development, and the petroleum finding thought from outer-source into inner-source. Unconventional petroleum evaluation focuses on source rocks characteristics, lithology, physical property, brittleness, oil-gas possibility and stress anisotropy. Taking shale gas for examples, in China, these six properties are TOC>2%, laminated silicious calcareous shale or calcareous silicious shale, porosity 3%-8%, brittle minerals content 50%-80%, gas content 2.3-4.1 m3/t, pressure coefficient 1.0-2.3, natural fractures; in north America, these six properties are TOC>4%, silicious shale or calcareous shale or marl, porosity 4%-9%, brittle minerals content 40%-70%, gas content 2.8-9.9 m3/t, pressure coefficient 1.3-1.85, natural fractures. “Sweet spot area” assessment, “factory-like” operation pattern and other core evaluation methods and technologies are discussed. And 8 key elements of unconventional “sweet spot area” are proposed, 3 of them are TOC>2% (for shale oil S1>2 mg/g), higher porosity (for tight oil & gas >10%, shale oil & gas >3%), and microfractures. Multiple wells “factory-like” operation pattern is elaborated, and its implementation needs 4 elements, i.e. batch well spacing, standard design, flow process, and reutilization. Through horizontal well volume fractures in directions, “man-made reservoirs” with large-scale fracture systems can be formed underground. For “shale oil revolution” in future, non-water “gas in critical state” and etc. fracturing fluid and matching technology should be stressed to be industrially tested and encouraged to be low cost developed. With Sichuan Basin as focus, this paper introduces the depositional environment, geochemical and reservoir characteristics, gas concentration and prospective resource potential of three different types of shale in China: marine shale, marine-terrigenous shale and terrigenous shale. Marine shale features high organic abundance (TOC: 1.0%–5.5%), high-over maturity (Ro: 2%–5%), rich accumulation of shale gas (gas concentration: 1.17–6.02 m3/t) and mainly continental shelf deposition, mainly distributed in the Paleozoic in the Yangtze area, Southern China, the Paleozoic in Northern China Platform and the Cambrian-Ordovician in Tarim Basin; Marine-terrigenous coalbed carbonaceous shale has high organic abundance (TOC: 2.6%–5.4%) and medium maturity (Ro: 1.1%–2.5%); terrigenous shale in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic has high organic abundance (TOC: 0.5%–22.0%) and mid-low maturity (Ro: 0.6–1.5%). The study on shale reservoirs in the Lower Paleozoic in Sichuan Basin discoveried nanometer-sized pores for the first time, and Cambrian and Silurian marine shale developed lots of micro- and nanometer-sized pores (100–200 nm), which is quite similar to the conditions in North America.
