Cancer is the result of continuous accumulation of gene mutations in normal cells. The number of mutations is different in different types of cancer and even in different patients with the same type of cancer. Therefore, studying all possible numbers of gene mutations in malignant cells is of great value for the understanding of tumorigenesis and the treatment of cancer. To this end, we applied a stochastic mathematical model considering the clonal expansion of any premalignant cells with different mutations to analyze the number of gene mutations in colorectal cancer. The age-specific colorectal cancer incidence rates from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) registry in the United States and the Life Span Study (LSS) in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan are chosen to test the reasonableness of the model. Our fitting results indicate that the transformation from normal cells to malignant cells may undergo two to five driver mutations for colorectal cancer patients without radiation-exposed environment, two to four driver mutations for colorectal cancer patients with low level radiation-exposure, and two to three driver mutations for colorectal cancer patients with high level radiation-exposure. Furthermore, the net growth rate of the mutated cells with radiation-exposure was is higher than that of the mutated cells without radiation-exposure for the models with two to five driver mutations. These results suggest that radiation environment may affect the clonal expansion of cells and significantly affect the development of tumors.

Recent developments on the electron optics simulator (EOS) are reported in this paper. The EOS is a finite element two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) electrostatic particle steady-state trajectory code that has been widely used for beam optics modeling of vacuum electronic devices. To extend the application scope and improve the computation efficiency, four significant advances have been made and are presented in this paper. First, the code is reprogrammed to consider physical models that contain dielectrics and to support charge excitation. Second, more primary particle emission models are added in EOS to meet the needs for simulating electron and ion optics devices for diverse applications. For the precise simulation of the secondary electron emission, the Vaughan model is improved, and the Furman model is newly added in EOS. Finally, the algebraic multigrid algorithm has been embedded in EOS, which can significantly improve the computation efficiency for problems with large-scale matrices. For these developments, the necessary principles and corresponding performance are shown in detail in this paper.

The flowering stage is a critical period for water sensitivity and quality formation of broomcorn millets. However, the effects and mechanisms of drought stress on the quality formation of broomcorn millets are not clear. We used the drought-resistant variety Hequ red millet (H) and the drought-sensitive variety Yanshu No. 10 (Y) were used as materials for drought stress treatment during the flowering stage, metabolomics and physiological methods were used to study the differences in protein, starch, amino acids, medium and medium-long chain fatty acids, and their response characteristics to drought in broomcorn millet. The results showed that different genotypes of broomcorn millets exhibited different response mechanisms in the face of drought stress. In Hequ red millet, drought stress significantly increased the contents of amylopectin (2.57%), pyridoxine (31.89%), and anthocyanin, and significantly decreased the contents of water-soluble protein (5.82%), glutelin (10.07%), thiamine (14.95%) and nicotinamide (23.01%). In Yanshu No. 10, drought significantly decreased amylose by 6.05%, and significantly increased riboflavin and nicotinamide contents by 21.11% and 32.59%. Correlation analysis showed that total starch and amylose were highly significantly positively correlated with methyl palmitate; negatively correlated with amylopectin, vitamins, proteins, free amino acids, and medium-long chain fatty acids; and amylopectin was significantly positively correlated with water-soluble protein, riboflavin, and pyridoxine. Water-soluble protein and glutelin were significantly positively correlated with most free amino acids, medium-long chain fatty acids, and nicotinamide. Thiamine showed significant positive correlation with nicotinamide and significant negative correlation with pyridoxine. Riboflavin was significantly positively correlated with nicotinamide, pyridoxine, and water-soluble protein, and pyridoxine was significantly positively correlated with water-soluble protein. Hequ red millet transforms into amylopectin by consuming water-soluble protein and glutelin, and improves drought resistance by accumulating pyridoxine, and changes its physicochemical properties by decreasing the content of amylose and protein and elevating the content of amylopectin. Yanshu No. 10 resisted drought by catabolizing lipids to produce fatty acids and by consuming amylose for conversion into other metabolites. The present study helps to understand the response of the nutritional quality of millets to drought stress at the flowering stage and provides a theoretical basis for the selection and breeding of superior varieties of millets and drought resistance research.

Drought stress restricts plant growth and development. The flowering stage is a period of abundant microbial diversity in the rhizosphere of broomcorn millet. However, the diversity and community structure of rhizosphere fungi during the flowering stage of broomcorn millet and the response mechanism to drought stress are still unclear. In this study, two broomcorn millet varieties, ‘Hequ red millet’ (A1) and ‘Yanshu No.10′ (A2), with different drought resistances, were used as experimental materials. Using the pot water control method, drought treatment at the flowering stage was carried out, and normal watering (A1CK, A2CK) was used as the control. High-throughput sequencing technology was used to study the diversity and structural changes in rhizosphere fungi in broomcorn millet. The results show that the number of fungi OTUs in the A1, A2, A1CK and A2CK samples were 445, 481, 467 and 434, respectively, of which 331 OTUs were shared by all groups. The fungal community in the rhizosphere of broomcorn millet was mainly composed of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Drought treatment significantly reduced the abundance of Mortierella and significantly increased the abundance of Phoma. The abundance of Nectriaceae in the rhizosphere soil of ‘Hequ Red millet’ was significantly increased. The abundance of Pseudocercospora in the rhizosphere soil of ‘Yanshu No.10′ was higher, and the lower was Hypocreales and Nectriaceae. However, there was no significant difference in the alpha diversity of fungal communities in the four treatments, and the fungal community structure between A2 and A1CK was more similar, whereas the difference between A1 and A2CK was larger. Correlation analysis showed that drought stress had little effect on the interaction of rhizosphere fungi, and metabolic functions such as nucleotide metabolism and electron transport in rhizosphere fungi accounted for a relatively high proportion. The results show that the diversity and community structure of rhizosphere fungi were less affected by drought, which may have been due to the close interaction between species, which made the fungal community more stable under drought stress, and the difference in planting varieties may have affected the enriched rhizosphere fungal species.

Objective: Ligustrazine is an amide alkaloid, with the active substance being Chuanxiong. Also known as tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), ligustrazine has various pharmacological effects and has been used to treat a variety of diseases. Many studies have demonstrated a role for ligustrazine in the treatment of several obstetrical and gynecological diseases. However, most results on the efficacy of ligustrazine have been obtained from basic laboratory experiments, with few clinical studies having validated these results. Mechanisms: In this narrative review we analyze the available literature summarizing the role and mechanism of ligustrazine in the treatment of obstetrical and gynecological diseases. Findings in Brief: TMP shows good results for the treatment of endometriosis, preeclampsia, ovarian cancer, as well as other obstetrical and gynecological diseases through its regulation of cell proliferation, invasion and metastasis, inflammation, immune response, apoptosis, autophagy, angiogenesis, endothelial protection, and fibrogenesis. Conclusions: TMP is therefore a promising drug with great research potential. Of note, ligustrazine is a complementary or alternative medicine and not the primary treatment. And most studies to date are laboratory-based experiments with low evidence levels. More in-depth research is needed to determine the pharmacological effects of ligustrazine in the clinic.

As one of the oldest agricultural crops in China, millet (Panicum miliaceum) has powerful drought tolerance. In this study, transcriptome and metabolome analyses of ‘Hequ Red millet’ (HQ) and ‘Yanshu No.10’ (YS10) millet after 6 h of drought stress were performed. Transcriptome characteristics of drought stress in HQ and YS10 were characterized by Pacbio full-length transcriptome sequencing. The pathway analysis of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) showed that the highly enriched categories were related to starch and sucrose metabolism, pyruvate metabolism, metabolic pathways, and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites when the two millet varieties were subjected to drought stress. Under drought stress, 245 genes related to energy metabolism were found to show significant changes between the two strains. Further analysis showed that 219 genes related to plant hormone signal transduction also participated in the drought response. In addition, numerous genes involved in anthocyanin metabolism and photosynthesis were confirmed to be related to drought stress, and these genes showed significant differential expression and played an important role in anthocyanin metabolism and photosynthesis. Moreover, we identified 496 transcription factors related to drought stress, which came from 10 different transcription factor families, such as bHLH, C3H, MYB, and WRKY. Further analysis showed that many key genes related to energy metabolism, such as citrate synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, and ATP synthase, showed significant upregulation, and most of the structural genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis also showed significant upregulation in both strains. Most genes related to plant hormone signal transduction showed upregulated expression, while many JA and SA signaling pathway-related genes were downregulated. Metabolome analysis was performed on ‘Hequ red millet’ (HQ) and ‘Yanshu 10’ (YS10), a total of 2082 differential metabolites (DEMs) were identified. These findings indicate that energy metabolism, anthocyanins, photosynthesis, and plant hormones are closely related to the drought resistance of millet and adapt to adversity by precisely regulating the levels of various molecular pathways.

A design of a V-band Helix-Folded Waveguide (H-FWG) cascaded traveling wave tube (TWT) is presented. In this cascaded structure, a digitized nonlinear theory model is put forward first to simulate these two types of the tubes by common process. Then, an initial design principle is proposed, which can design these two different kinds of tubes universally. Using this principle, a high-gain helix TWT is carefully designed as a first stage amplifier followed by a FWG TWT to obtain high power. Simulations predict that a peak power of 800 W with saturated gain of 60 dB from 55 GHz to 60 GHz can be achieved.

Considering the market demand is stochastic and dependent on price, this paper shows that the revenue-sharing contract could coordinate a three-level supply chain consisting of one manufacturer, one distributor, and one retailer under normal environment. However, the original revenue-sharing contract cannot coordinate the supply chain under disruptions in circumstances of certain incidents leading to significant changes in market demand and causing additional deviation costs. To solve the problem, this essay introduces two improved forms of revenue-sharing contract: a mixed contract form based on a quantity discount policy and a pure form, which are characterized by antidisruption ability. The model of improved revenue-sharing contract is optimized when the market demand is in the additive form or in the multiplicative form with price dependent demand. Formulas are given to calculate the optimal contract parameters. Finally, this essay demonstrates the accuracy of the model of improved revenue-sharing contract with the help of numerical examples.

Revenue-sharing contract is a kind of mechanism to improve performance or to achieve perfect coordination of supply chain. Considering a three-level supply chain consisting of a manufacturer, a distributor, and a retailer who faces a stochastic and sales effort dependent demand, the paper analyzes the impact of sales effort on supply chain coordination and expounds the reasons why traditional revenue-sharing contract cannot coordinate supply chain in this condition. Given three cases: only the retailer bears the sales effort cost, only the manufacturer bears the sales effort cost, and the retailer bears the sales effort cost with the manufacturer, the paper proposes an improved revenue-sharing contract based on quantity discount policy to coordinate the supply chain. It illustrates that improved revenue sharing contract can coordinate supply chain by implementing it in one transaction or two transactions of three-level supply chain. The model of improved revenue-sharing contract is optimized, respectively, by addition form and multiplication form with sales effort dependent demand. Formulas are given to determine the optimal contract parameters. Finally, numerical experiments are given to test the accuracy of the model of improved revenue-sharing contract.

Abstract Background Noonan syndrome (NS) is a rare genetic disease, and patients who suffer from it exhibit a facial morphology that is characterized by a high forehead, hypertelorism, ptosis, inner epicanthal folds, down-slanting palpebral fissures, a highly arched palate, a round nasal tip, and posteriorly rotated ears. Facial analysis technology has recently been applied to identify many genetic syndromes (GSs). However, few studies have investigated the identification of NS based on the facial features of the subjects. Objectives This study develops advanced models to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis of NS. Methods A total of 1,892 people were enrolled in this study, including 233 patients with NS, 863 patients with other GSs, and 796 healthy children. We took one to 10 frontal photos of each subject to build a dataset, and then applied the multi-task convolutional neural network (MTCNN) for data pre-processing to generate standardized outputs with five crucial facial landmarks. The ImageNet dataset was used to pre-train the network so that it could capture generalizable features and minimize data wastage. We subsequently constructed seven models for facial identification based on the VGG16, VGG19, VGG16-BN, VGG19-BN, ResNet50, MobileNet-V2, and squeeze-and-excitation network (SENet) architectures. The identification performance of seven models was evaluated and compared with that of six physicians. Results All models exhibited a high accuracy, precision, and specificity in recognizing NS patients. The VGG19-BN model delivered the best overall performance, with an accuracy of 93.76%, precision of 91.40%, specificity of 98.73%, and F1 score of 78.34%. The VGG16-BN model achieved the highest AUC value of 0.9787, while all models based on VGG architectures were superior to the others on the whole. The highest scores of six physicians in terms of accuracy, precision, specificity, and the F1 score were 74.00%, 75.00%, 88.33%, and 61.76%, respectively. The performance of each model of facial recognition was superior to that of the best physician on all metrics. Conclusion Models of computer-assisted facial recognition can improve the rate of diagnosis of NS. The models based on VGG19-BN and VGG16-BN can play an important role in diagnosing NS in clinical practice.

Abstract Soft composite solids are made of inclusions dispersed within soft matrices. They are ubiquitous in nature and form the basis of many biological tissues. In the field of materials science, synthetic soft composites are promising candidates for building various engineering devices due to their highly programmable features. However, when the volume fraction of the inclusions increases, predicting the mechanical properties of these materials poses a significant challenge for the classical theories of composite mechanics. The difficulty arises from the inherently disordered, multi-scale interactions between the inclusions and the matrix. To address this challenge, we systematically investigated the mechanics of densely filled soft elastomers containing stiff microspheres. We experimentally demonstrate how the strain-stiffening response of the soft composites is governed by the critical scalings in the vicinity of a shear-jamming transition of the included particles. The proposed criticality framework quantitatively connects the overall mechanics of a soft composite with the elasticity of the matrix and the particles, and captures the diverse mechanical responses observed across a wide range of material parameters. The findings uncover a novel design paradigm of composite mechanics that relies on engineering the jamming properties of the embedded inclusions.

S-band high-gradient accelerating structures were proposed to accelerate protons from 30 to 230 MeV for a compact proton therapy linac in Institute of Modern Physics. A backward traveling wave structure and a single-periodic magnetically coupled standing wave structure were designed, and differences between these two structures were analyzed to select a more suitable one for the proton therapy linac. In this paper, a novel single-periodic magnetically coupled standing-wave accelerating structure was studied, with an optimized nose cone that related to a smaller peak surface electric field and higher shunt impedance, with the reduced number of coupling holes and mechanical von Mises stress thus making it possible for higher duty factor and longer rf pulse operation, also with larger coupling holes and improved cell-to-cell coupling thus making this structure suitable for operating in π mode. An 11-cell high-power prototype for β=0.26 particles was developed with an active length of 143 mm. This prototype cavity is supposed to operate at an accelerating gradient of 30 MV/m with 0.1% duty factor, corresponding to a maximum surface electric field of 105 MV/m and a peak rf power of 3.43 MW. Cavity design, optimization, manufacture, rf measurement, and high-power test will be discussed in this paper.

Background: Noonan syndrome (NS) is relatively common but poorly recognized. We aimed to describe the phenotypic and genotypic spectrum of NS in a Chinese cohort. Method: The study retrospectively investigated consecutive pediatric patients who presented at the Guangdong cardiovascular institute between 2018 and 2020 with confirmed known NS-relevant mutations determined by exome sequencing. Dates of genetic testing, Age, sex, institution of genetic testing, mutated gene (related to NS) and its classification, heterozygosity, and parental origin were identified from the sequencing reports. Facial features, cardiac defect and other clinical characteristics were also assessed. Comparisons of categorical variables between groups were examined by Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test when appropriate. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was performed to evaluate the reliability of evaluation of facial features between different evaluators. Results: The most prevalent mutated genes were PTPN11 (37.0%) and RAF1 (19.6%), and most mutations were pathogenic (67.4%) and de novo (87.0%). Most patients were with NS-relevant facial features (97.4%) and cardiac defects (92.7%), where ventricular hypertrophy, pulmonary valve stenosis, and atrial septal defect were the most prevalent. Patients with mutated RAF1 appeared to be diagnosed at an older age than those with mutated PTPN11, and with higher prevalence of mitral regurgitation, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and ventricular hypertrophy, but lower prevalence of pulmonary valve stenosis and pulmonary artery stenosis. Ovarian cancer is one of the most aggressive and heterogeneous female tumors in the world, and serous ovarian cancer (SOC) is of particular concern for being the leading cause of ovarian cancer death. Due to its clinical and biological complexities, ovarian cancer is still considered one of the most difficult tumors to diagnose and manage. In this study, three datasets were assembled, including 30 cases of serous cystadenoma (SCA), 30 cases of serous borderline tumor (SBT), and 45 cases of serous adenocarcinoma (SAC). Mueller matrix microscopy is used to obtain the polarimetry basis parameters (PBPs) of each case, combined with a machine learning (ML) model to derive the polarimetry feature parameters (PFPs) for distinguishing serous ovarian tumor (SOT). The correlation between the mean values of PBPs and the clinicopathological features of serous ovarian cancer was analyzed. The accuracies of PFPs obtained from three types of SOT for identifying dichotomous groups (SCA versus SAC, SCA versus SBT, and SBT versus SAC) were 0.91, 0.92, and 0.8, respectively. The accuracy of PFP for identifying triadic groups (SCA versus SBT versus SAC) was 0.75. Correlation analysis between PBPs and the clinicopathological features of SOC was performed. There were correlations between some PBPs ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], rqcross, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]) and clinicopathological features, including the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, pathological grading, preoperative ascites, malignant ascites, and peritoneal implantation. The research showed that PFPs extracted from polarization images have potential applications in quantitatively differentiating the SOTs. These polarimetry basis parameters related to the clinicopathological features of SOC can be used as prognostic factors.

Abstract Background Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a common complication with poor outcomes following coronary angiography (CAG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, no study has explored the population attributable risks (PARs) of the CI-AKI risk factors. Therefore, we aimed to identify the independent risk factors of CI-AKI and estimate their PARs. Methods We analyzed 3450 consecutive patients undergoing CAG/PCI from a prospective cohort in Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital. CI-AKI was defined as a serum creatinine elevation ≥50% or 0.3 mg/dL from baseline within the first 48 to 72 h after the procedure. Independent risk factors for CI-AKI were evaluated through stepwise approach and multivariable logistic regression analysis, and those that are potentially modifiable were of interest. PARs of independent risk factors were calculated with their odds ratios and prevalence among our cohort. Results The overall incidence of CI-AKI was 7.19% (n = 248), which was associated with increased long-term mortality. Independent risk factors for CI-AKI included heart failure (HF) symptoms, hypoalbuminemia, high contrast volume, hypotension, hypertension, chronic kidney disease stages, acute myocardial infarction and age > 75 years. Among the four risk factors of interest, the PAR of HF symptoms was the highest (38.06%), followed by hypoalbuminemia (17.69%), high contrast volume (12.91%) and hypotension (4.21%). Conclusions These modifiable risk factors (e.g., HF symptoms, hypoalbuminemia) could be important and cost-effective targets for prevention and treatment strategies to reduce the risk of CI-AKI. Intervention studies targeting these risk factors are needed.

The antiviral innate immunity is the first line of host defense against viral infection. Mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS, also named Cardif/IPS-1/VISA) is a critical protein in RNA virus-induced antiviral signaling pathways. Our previous research suggested that E3 ubiquitin-protein ligases RING-finger protein (RNF90) negatively regulate cellular antiviral responses by targeting STING for degradation, though its role in RNA virus infection remains unknown. This study demonstrated that RNF90 negatively regulated RNA virus-triggered antiviral innate immune responses in RNF90-silenced PMA-THP1 cells, RNF90-deficient cells (including HaCaTs, MEFs, and BMDMs), and RNF90-deficient mice. However, RNF90 regulated RNA virus-triggered antiviral innate immune responses independent of STING. RNF90 promoted K48-linked ubiquitination of MAVS and its proteasome-dependent degradation, leading to the inhibition of innate immune responses. Altogether, our findings suggested a novel function and mechanism of RNF90 in antiviral innate immunity.

We report a design work of a continuous-wave (cw) radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) for the injector linac of the High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility project. The rf design and multiphysics analysis were conducted to enhance the long-term stability and reliability of the cavity. To minimize the peak modified Poynting vector and peak surface electric field associated with the rf breakdown rate, the cross section and the vanes segmentation of the RFQ cavity were optimized. Pi-mode stabilizing loops (PISLs) were adopted for the cavity to increase the mode separation between the quadrupole and the neighboring dipole modes, intending to reduce the emittance growth and beam loss caused by the field asymmetry of the quadrupole mode. Due to the lack of a universal criterion of acceptable mode separation, the field asymmetry of the quadrupole mode was directly used as the design criterion for the PISL. Tuners were designed to tune the cavity frequency and longitudinal field flatness. Thermal distributions on tuners with and without rf sealing were investigated, and we found that rf sealing was indispensable in decreasing the tuner’s temperature. A multiphysics analysis was carried out to maintain the cavity frequency while running with different rf power, in an attempt to avoid frequently adjusting the cooling water temperature when accelerating different ions. The analysis also verified that a large wall thickness could make the cavity possess a low stress and a minor deformation.

Superconducting multi-spoke cavities are outstanding alternative choice for acceleration of heavy ions in medium velocity regimes. Based on the scheme of China ADS, several researches on the superconducting double-spoke cavities were done and two prototype cavities have been developed. In this paper, the RF design, the mechanical design and fabrication considerations of the bare cavity will be described in detail. After Buffered Chemical Polishing and High Pressure Rinsing, one of the prototype cavities was installed into the Vertical Test Stand for high gradient RF testing at 4.2 K. The measurement results of the quality factor as a function of the accelerating field and the maximum surface field will be presented. An accelerating gradient of more than 15 MV/m is achieved during the test, with maximum surface electric field of 58 MV/m, and maximum surface magnetic field of 117 mT. The pathological hallmarks of Parkinson's disease (PD) are the progressive loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and the presence of overactivated glial cells and neuroinflammation. Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) c-Rel subunit is closely related in the pathological progress of PD, however the roles and mechanisms of c-Rel in PD development remain unclear. Here, in neurotoxins-induced PD models, the dynamic changes of NF-κB c-Rel and its functions were evaluated. We found that c-Rel was rapidly activated in the nigrostriatal pathway, which mainly occurred in dopaminergic neurons and microglia. c-Rel could maintain neuronal survival by initiating the anti-apoptotic gene expression in MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells and it could inhibit microglial overactivation by suppressing the inflammatory gene expression in LPS-challenged BV2 cells. c-Rel inhibitor IT901 aggravated the damage of MPTP on dopaminergic neurons and promoted the activation of microglia in the nigrostriatal pathway of mice. Moreover, the expression of c-Rel in blood samples of PD patients decreased dramatically. Our results indicate that the NF-κB/c-Rel subunit plays an important role in neuroprotection and neuroinflammation inhibition during PD progression. Off-line high-power tests of the fundamental power couplers prior to their on-line operations are of importance for ensuring their operating reliability and stability. To test the couplers using a limited power supply effectively, a movable standing wave (SW) resonant test system with an extraordinary power gain has been developed at Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP, CAS). The system consists of a movable resonator having two movable shorts for the enhancement and movement of the SW field, and a tunable secondary coupler for feeding power into the resonator without reflection. The proof-of-principle structure of the system has been built and tested both at the low-power and at the high-power levels. The low-power test demonstrates that the moving range of the SW resonant field is over half a wavelength which ensures that the fundamental couplers can be tested by SW field at all reflected phases, and the system can provide a power gain ranging from 50 to 94, corresponding to 200–376 (4×50–4×94) of power gain in the case of traveling wave resonant ring system. Two types of multipacting inside the couplers were observed during the high-power tests and the mechanism of their influences on the power gain was analyzed. This movable and high-power-gain solution can be beneficial for the promotion of SW resonant test systems for fundamental couplers.

To simulate the beam and wave interaction (BWI) of various types of traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs), a digitized nonlinear theory has been developed with two features. First, the digitized RF field profiles obtained from electromagnetic simulation software are applied to replace the analytical RF field profiles in TWTAs. Second, the relationship of energy conservation between the beam and RF fields is used to derive the RF field equations. Based on this nonlinear theory, one-dimensional (1-D) code has been constructed to predict the performances of TWTAs. Comparisons between the simulations and the experimental results for three types of TWTAs, i.e., a K-band helix TWTA, a V-band coupled cavity (CC) TWTA and a W-band folded waveguide (FWG) TWTA, are discussed to prove this nonlinear theory. A novel radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) resonant structure with bent vanes is proposed at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP, CAS). Compared with the traditional four-vane type RFQs, the bent-vane type structure is more compact at low frequency with significant reduction in the cross section size, and is capable of using a simple cooling system due to its rotationally symmetric structure. An 81.25 MHz proof-of-principle cavity is now under development at IMP. The beam dynamics design, electromagnetic optimizations with multipacting simulations, multiphysics analyses, and mechanical design of this novel bent-vane type RFQ (BV-RFQ) will be presented in this paper.

The characteristic brain pathology and motor and nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) are well established. However, the details regarding the causes of the disease and its course are much less clear. Animal models have significantly enriched our current understanding of the progression of this disease. Among various neurotoxin-based models of PD, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) mouse model is the most commonly studied model. Here, we provide an overview of the dynamic changes in the nigrostriatal pathway in the MPTP mouse model of PD. Pathophysiological events, such as reductions in the striatal dopamine (DA) concentrations and levels of the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) protein, depletion of TH-positive nerve fibers, a decrease in the number of TH-positive neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), and glial activation, are addressed. This article will assist with the development of interventions or therapeutic strategies for PD.
